Acid attack victim unaware of real extent of horrific injuries, says brother

EMPTY SHELL: The attack has not only robbed Mohd Rafie of his future but also taken away his spirit and looks. (Inset) Mohd Jeffry — Pix: SAMSUL SAID

THE victim had a face of undeniable good looks. The attacker represents the face of unspeakable evil. These contrasting features emerged yesterday as the family of acid attack victim Mohd Rafie Abd Latiff, 28, hoped the lunatic would be quickly found just as the police released a photofit of a suspect. The victim’s brother, Army Major Mohd Jeffry Abd Latiff, said the family had accepted Mohd Rafie had lost his future, career, spirit and looks. “He is left with an empty shell. A part of him has died and that will never return,” he said, flanking a heavilybandaged Mohd Rafie, who is recovering in the intensive care unit of Kuala Lumpur Hospital. “We’re going to get through this…we are not going to allow this to stop our lives. I hope the faith and support from family and friends will keep Rafie steady and bring him through this.” Surgeons are trying to save the sight in the left eye of Mohd Rafie, who also suffered horrific injuries on his face and right hand, after a stranger thrust a container of

By G. PRAKASH prakash@mmail.com.my acid at him from point-blank range. The acid was said to be so corrosive it burned through his clothes. Doctors and authorities are trying to determine what kind of substance caused the burns. Yesterday was Mohd Rafie’s eighth day in hospital since the attack took place on Aug 8 about 1.30am. Mohd Jeffry, 35, said his brother had no idea of the extent of his injuries. “I tell him everyday that his injuries are bad and that he has to make himself strong enough to face his injuries.” He described the sight of seeing his brother for the first time at the hospital as “unbearable”. “When I saw my brother lying there, in that condition, I started crying.” Recalling the incident related to him by his brother, Mohd Jeffry said the attack could be related to an earlier incident involving a car driven by his brother’s friend, Mohd Zaid Haris, 23, that grazed another vehicle in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman

where they had gone for Hari Raya shopping. He said soon after the mishap, the other car apparently trailed the friends. Mohd Zaid then stopped the car at a public toilet area next to Wisma Bumi to use the restroom while Mohd Rafie remained in the front passenger seat. “Suddenly, a man appeared from nowhere and opened the car door. Before my brother could react, the man splashed corrosive substance on him.” Mohd Zaid heard his friend’s screams and rushed to his aid, only to see him slumped on the seat. Bystanders who went to his aid told Mohd Zaid what had happened and that two others were in a black Proton Wira when the incident occurred. Police traced the suspect through street video surveillance cameras and matched it with a man involved in a robbery at a petrol station toilet in Sungai Besi last month. In that hold-up, a dispatch rider, who had just cashed out company funds totaling RM18,000, was splashed with acid before being robbed. •Also on pg2

In-flight film on mysteries of lady pleasures THE in-flight entertainment on some planes run by Australian airline Qantas currently contains a somewhat unusual offering — a movie that purports to elucidate the mysteries of female sexual pleasure. The 50-minute French film The Female Orgasm Explained, which includes naked scenes, is carried on long-haul "Video on Demand" aircraft in the airline's The Edge channel — complete with a warning that it is for mature audiences only. "Programmes are selected according to quality of content, box office/ratings, topicality and Qantas customer demographics," Qantas said in a statement. Airline crews are able to block content at the requests of parents, it added. Catriona Eider, an associate professor at the Department of Sociology and Social Policy, Sydney University, said: "I think sociologically it's interesting they are showing something that has the potential in that quite confined space to have people say 'Oh, what are you watching?' or shows that might be understood as titillating as porn," she said. — Reuters

Amendments insufficient Charge the perpetrators to fully protect land owners, says lawyer

THE proposed changes to the National Land Code (NLC) 1965 are insufficient to battle fraudsters, says lawyer Derek Fernandez (pic). "A biometric system and other measures are welcome but insufficient as the NLC needs to provide insurance for land fraud. An additional fee can be added to each transaction to cover this as an effective compensation for victims," he told The Malay Mail. Derek said land fraud continued to flourish as the authorities failed to prosecute those involved. "Criminal prosecutions must take place and people must go to jail for land fraud but this has not really happened," he said, adding criminal syndicates were able to circumvent current checks and balances by working with corrupt civil servants.

By MARHALIM ABAS mabas@mmail.com.my

"These people seem to be immune from the law. It's the defrauded property owners who have to fight to get back what was theirs in the first place." Derek said prosecuting fraudsters and their cohorts at the land offices would deter such scams. "High-definition closedcircuit television cameras should be installed at land offices, especially at transaction counters as well as other parts of the office to monitor employees." Derek also claimed the land office's current computer system was inadequate and does not show sufficient history of transactions. He was commenting on The Malay Mail's front-page report yesterday that the

Land and Mines Department was tightening up loose ends to better protect genuine land owners from fraud. In an exclusive interview recently, the department's senior officials said the changes were part of their proposal to amend the NLC. "When the victim stopped at a petrol station in Jalan Sungai Besi and went to the restroom, the suspect trailed him and splashed a corrosive liquid before taking the money away." Khairy said the victim blocked the liquid with a bag he was holding and suffered only burn marks, mostly on the hand. THE Bar Council is unaware of the proposed amendments to the National Land Code (NLC) 1965. Secretary Tony Woon said he would ask the council's Conveyancing Committee to clarify the matter with the Land and Mines Department before making an official stand on the matter. Woon was asked to comment on The Malay Mail's front-page report yesterday on proposed amendments to better protect land owners from fraudsters.

and Environment Ministry was eager for a new set of rules to better protect property owners from unscrupulous syndicates. "We are aware of land scams in the country. We are now trying to minimise such scams and this can be done with an amended NLC," he had said, adding the department was in the midst of consulting with relevant parties before drawing up the final paperwork by year-end. Upon the Cabinet's green light, the department hopes the proposal will be tabled in Parliament by the middle of next year. Azemi had said about 75 per cent of the NLC needed to be amended. Among the proposed changes are the introduction of a Certificate of Correctness as an additional document when transferring land to another person and

to implement the biometric system to ensure authenticity of a seller's identity. The Malay Mail had reported on syndicates obtaining original land titles by forging documents, such as identity cards, letters of undertaking and signatures, and selling the land without the property owners' knowledge. National C onsumer Complaints Centre (NCCC) senior manager M. Matheevani said the centre had received various complaints from the public that the NLC did not provide enough protection. "It is imperative for the authorities to amend the NLC as it does not correspond with the current situation of higher property prices. While the country aspires to be a developed nation, its laws are archaic and inadequate with its present needs."

Drug pushers throw ganja at pursuing cops WHEN three men suspected of being drug pushers were fleeing from pursuing cops at Jalan Pudu on Monday night, one of them threw a packet of ganja to distract them. That failed to stop the cops in their chase of the three suspects who were soon arrested. Police later found 500gm of ganja and 12gm of syabu, worth a total of RM4,000, in the car they were in. In the 11pm incident, police spotted three men in a car behaving suspiciously at the Sungai Besi toll. "When approached by our patrol unit, the suspects sped off and would not stop despite the firing of several warning shots," said Dang Wangi district police chief ACP Zulkarnain Abdul Rahman. What followed was a 15-minute 12.4km highspeed chase that ended when the suspects' car skidded and hit a divider at Jalan Pudu near the KL police headquarters. "The suspects survived the crash and fled on foot. It was then that one of them threw a packet of ganja at the pursuing cops," said Zulkarnain. "Judging by the suspects' car number plate, we believe all three of them are from another State." The suspects, aged 21 to 31, are now in custody at the Dang Wangi lock-up to facilitate investigations.

The two cops were soon joined by four other policemen, all from the Sungai Buloh station. They arrested six suspects and also prevented any loss of life and the workshop from being burnt although four of the men in the

fight had their hands chopped off. In recognition of their prompt intervention, the six policemen received certificates of appreciation from Selangor deputy police chief, Datuk A. Thaiveegan at the PJ police headquarters here yesterday. "The brave and quick action by these six policemen serves as a good example for all of us," said Thaiveegan.

"In diffusing the gang fight, they prevented any loss of life and also saved the workshop from being burnt." Thaiveegan said the six suspects, aged 20 to 30, have been remanded until Saturday to facilitate investigations. "The fight could be due to business rivalry. We have set up a special team to track down 14 others involved in the fight," he said.

In the evening incident on Aug 10, constables Salehin Mohd Mohamed Nor, 29, and Mohd Zulkhaimi Abdul Rahman, 31, noticed a small fire at the workshop where a gang fight broke out. The two cops radioed their station for back-up and turned on their patrol car's beacon lights on the gang members, some armed with parangs, causing them to scatter. The other four cops — Azrol Arshad, Azlisham Md Jam, Hafiz Mohd Salleh and Mohd

Snatch thieves nabbed POLICE nabbed two suspected snatch thieves at Jalan Kapar here after a 2km chase yesterday. A police source said the two suspects on a motorcycle were behaving suspiciously in a residential area and this led to a public tip-off. "When our patrol car approached the two suspects, they fled but were trapped in an alley in Jalan Kapar after a 2km chase," said the source. "The suspects were scouting for victims. They are now remanded at the North Klang district police headquarters." It is believed the suspects, in their 20s and 30s, were responsible for at least three snatch theft cases in Klang since earlier this year. Farid Jamaludin — arrived six minutes later and the six of them managed to apprehend six of the suspects. Apparently, four of the men in the gang fight had their hands chopped off. When approached by The Malay Mail, Salehin said: "Zulkhaimi and I were on patrol duty at the time and we did our best to keep the peace." Zulkhaimi said: "This recognition from our superiors encourages us to be even better cops."

AMPANG: Taman Kosas double murders

Three more arrested, including victim's husband

THE Sabahan husband of an Indonesian woman whose dismembered body and that of her infant son were found at an abandoned unit on the fifth floor of the Chryssa Block at Astaria Apartments in Taman Kosas on Aug 3 has been re-arrested. Selangor CID chief SAC Mohd Adnan Abdullah said the victim's husband was rearrested last week, along with two Bangladeshi nationals, bringing the total of those arrested in connection with the double murders to 11. "The victim's 29-year-old husband was picked up at his

Bandar Baru Ampang home last week and the Bangladeshi men were detained on Monday at separate locations in Segambut and Sri Petaling," said Mohd Adnan, adding that the remand order for these three has been extended to Saturday. “We are currently pursuing one more person who can help us with the investigation." The victim's husband was originally arrested on Aug 7, also at his Bandar Baru Ampang home. He was released

after his statement was recorded and he "confirmed" the identity of the murdered woman to be his Indonesian wife, Suramlah Nidin, after a reconstruction of her face at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre (UKMMC) mortuary in Cheras. The Sabahan claimed he had been searching for his wife and child after their recent disappearance although he did not lodge a police report that they were missing.

He also could not provide documentary evidence that the murder victims were his wife and son. On Aug 6, police arrested eight Bangladeshis and recovered a "tool" believed to be the murder weapon. Seven of them were picked up from a rented apartment at Chryssa Block, several units from where the two bodies were found, while another suspect was apprehended at a hotel nearby. These suspects have been staying here from two weeks to a year and employed as cleaners and restaurant workers.

On Aug 3, 15 dismembered body parts of a woman and the intact remains of an infant boy were found stuffed in a total of five plastic bags at the fifth floor apartment. Police made the horrifying find after they were alerted by residents due to the stench emanating from the unit. The woman was decapitated and her head was not among the body parts in four plastic bags hanging from sharp plaster ceiling splinters. Also missing were her torso and right leg. The child's intact body was found in a plastic bag forced

into a gaping hole in the plaster ceiling of the bathroom. Based on the high state of decomposition, police believe the bodies had been there for about a week. So far, more than 100 people have been interviewed by police. Selangor police are tightlipped on the identities of the two victims although the Indonesian embassy here confirmed that the murdered woman was Suramlah Nidin who first came here in 2005 and the same year secretly married the Sabahan without her family's knowledge.

Releasing the gag or… Censorship policy review gets guarded reception

Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ) Malaysia executive offi cer Masjaliza Hamzah

media interest groups and practitioners have expressed cautious support for the government's proposed censorship policy review, following the announcement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak that the move was in line with the country's changing socio-political landscape. His statement on Monday follows the government's method of censoring an article published in The Economist, which the premier criticised as ineffective. According to reports in the online media, he mentioned using other means of control such as legal proceedings. Below are the reactions of some of the industry players.

By Marhalim Abas mabas@mmail.com.my

"We congratulate the Prime Minister on his realisation that these policies are no longer 'effective' in this day and age. "We hope the 'review' of 'ineffective' policies would result first and foremost, in the repeal of the Printing Presses and Publications Act (PPPA) 1984, which among others, gives the Home Minister the power to grant/renew licences to print media and states that the minister's decision is final and not subject to judicial review. "In our view, it is not enough to amend PPPA. This outdated law must be repealed first before other steps can be put in place to encourage the practice of ethical standards and the growth of media plurality in Malaysia. "The government's call to 'review' media censorship policies must be done in tandem with efforts to regain public trust in the media, especially print and Statefunded media. "We urge the government to relinquish control of Statefunded media — Bernama and RTM radio and TV — and make these publiclyfunded media accountable to the public to serve public interest, rather than serve the government in power. "We also urge the government to cease attempts to set up State-run media councils and instead, provide an environment that enables media and civil society organisations to set up independent selfregulatory media councils which will promote media freedom and hold media accountable to journalistic ethics.

"If the objective is to make media accountable, self-regulation is better than defamation which can have a chilling effect on freedom of expression. "In an environment like Malaysia which doesn't have specific laws to guarantee media freedom — unlike neighbouring Indonesia and Philippines — and where the judiciary often takes a narrow and conservative interpretation of what constitutes freedom of expression under Article 10 of the Federal Constitution, resorting to defamation can result in another way —'legal' of course — of controlling media and curbing it from playing its role in matters of public interest. "Defamation, the purpose of which is to protect reputation, can be and has been used to prevent open public debate and legitimate criticism of wrongdoing by officials. "CIJ would like to point out that international best practices on defamation states that public bodies, including the legislative, executive or judicial branches of government or bodies which otherwise perform public functions, should be prohibited from bringing defamation actions. "This principle was adopted to ensure open criticism of government and public authorities, recognising the limited and public nature of any reputation these bodies may have, and the vast means and resources available to them to defend themselves from criticism." N a t i o n a l Un i o n o f Journalists (NUJ) general secretary V. Anbalagan "The NUJ welcomes the statement from the nation's top political executive, the Prime Minister. "His view is a step in the right direction as he understands the role of media in nation-building.

including the practice of ethical journalism. "On the same note, NUJ takes the stand that print media owners must also be held accountable if their newspapers and staff violate public and private laws. The individuals concerned shall be held responsible, not the newspapers, in a court of law."

"We have always believed that the media censorship policy can no longer work in an era where people have the ability to compare and access news outbreaks and issues of public importance in the Internet and through SMS. "People are also attracted to news portals (such as Malaysiakini, The Malaysian Insider, and Malaysia Today), blogs, Facebook and Twitter to get the latest and wholesome information. "If the traditional media like newspapers continue to practise the censorship policy, they are actually doing a great disservice as the elected government of the day will be denied effective feedback. "The NUJ believes editors are also 'overly cautious' because they do not want to lose their jobs or do not want to be hauled up by the licensing authority, the Home Ministry. "This has resulted, slowly but surely, in newspaper readers shifting to the alternative media when their confidence in newspapers has been shattered. "And the effect, for the moment, is declining circulation. We reiterate our stand that the government abolishes the PPPA as the legislation stifles the existence of print publications. "We will not be able to compete with the alternative media under the present circumstances. "Let us have a self-regulated media council to manage the affairs of the Fourth Estate,

Tr an sp aren c y Inter national Malaysia presi dent Datuk Paul Low

"There are no censorship laws in the country, policies yes. The last time there was censorship on the media was during the May 13, 1969, incident. "There has never been direct censorship and publishers had to bear the consequences of what they did. "What is more important and worrisome is the pervasiveness of laws that had the effect of curbing the freedom and publication of news depending on what the powers want them to be. "If they want to review the policies or laws, then the PPPA, the Official Secrets Act, Sedition Act and Internal Security Act, that curb the publication of news and information, must also be reviewed."

Minister take note. As for the Opposition leaders, don't just claim to be champions of freedom of expression and the media. "Walk the talk please and stop using it as a tool to win votes if, once in power, you are going to ban the mainstream media from your sight as soon as you don't like what is being reported. "At the same time, I hope the Prime Minister's openness is not abused by the foreign media, some of which have been known to be unfairly critical of Malaysia due to vested interests. "Also, I hope it does not lead to too many legal suits as these can be construed as a means to censor the media." Lecturer and political analyst Ong Kian Ming

Blogger Datuk Ahirudin Attan

"I welcome the move. It is the right step in the right direction. I would, however, call on the Prime Minister to repeal the PPPA if he really wants to make changes to the media." Mag azine publisher and former New Straits Times group editor-inchief Datuk A. Kadir Jasin

"I applaud the move. At a time when the British Prime Minister is seeking a ban on social media for allegedly creating unrest and the Selangor Menteri Besar is executing a gag order on the Press over the church raid issue, the Prime Minister's vow of no more The Economist-style censorship on the international media juts out as a progressive voice in support of media freedom. "I hope the Home Minister and the Information Communication and Culture

"I do not rate the censorship policy review as more important than the Prime Minister's announcement of the setting up of a parliamentary select committee on electoral reforms. "There is not much information on how the censorship policy review will be conducted. "Moreover, I believe the implementation of the laws on the media are selective. "For example, the issue with The Star for publishing pork items while other newspapers like Utusan Malaysia continue to harp on racial issues and no action has been taken against them. "As for the censorship policy review, we have seen the kind of review that has been done, especially on the Internal Security Act (ISA), which has been in the works for the last two years. "The ISA has remained essentially the same."

THE four runaway sisters who fled their hellish home are hoping the coming Hari Raya celebration would be a good "getaway" respite from the nightmare they underwent the past three years. The sisters, who left home to get away from their 34-yearold mother and her alleged lesbian lover, are looking forward to reuniting with their father's side of the family, especially their grandmother, in Sandakan, Sabah. As this year would be the first time in six years the sisters are celebrating Raya with their father, they plan to make it a happy and unforgettable one, including being attired in different colours. "We haven't yet decided what colours but just planning this is exciting us already," the eldest of the siblings told The Malay Mail yesterday. The sisters, aged six, eight, 12 and 15, are scheduled to return to their 46-yearold father's hometown this Thursday as he was awarded custody by the civil courts last week, and has come to KL to

On July 18, The Malay Mail front-paged the girls' claims of exploitation including being forced to work as cleaners at Taman Langat Utama in Kuala Langat by their mother's alleged lover who has a cleaning contract with a local council. The siblings said they were paid RM1 to RM5 each for 12 hours of sweeping and collecting garbage. The sisters fled the house with the help of their aunt when their mother was out shopping with a fifth sibling, also a girl, aged 14. The eldest sibling, accompanied by her uncle and aunt, made three police reports alleging ill-treatment and approached The Malay Mail to help secure them a safe environment. The aunt, however, felt it was unsafe for the girls to be in KL as their mother could trace them. HARD AT WORK: Rozlina monitoring an MRI scan, does not mind working during the festive season

WHILE most Muslims spend the first day of Raya with their family and friends, there are many like radiographer Rozlina Zakariah of Assunta Hospital in Jalan Templer, who will not be able to go on leave and will continue working on the festive occasion. "In the six years I have been with Assunta, this will be the third consecutive year I will be on duty during the first day of Raya," said the 29-year-old who resides in PJ. "I conduct magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and

X-rays on the sick and injured when on duty, and I am usually on call round-the-clock though my normal working hours are 8.30am to 5pm." Rozlina said she does not mind working during Raya and her parents in Kelana Jaya have become used to it. "On normal working days, there are up to 10 of us in the radiology department, including two radiographers on duty and a third on standby in case

of heavy workload," she said. "Each day, we conduct hundreds of X-rays and those on duty during public holidays know what we do is important as some cases such as accident victims, are life-and-death situations." Rozlina said unlike colleagues from other States, she being a PJ resident makes things easier to be on duty during Raya. "I can visit my parents, relatives and friends during my off-duty hours as they live within the Klang Valley."

System upgrading work will cause water disruption in Hulu Selangor on Aug 22 and 25. The affected areas are Taman Kancing Jaya, Taman Tun Perak Rawang, Taman Tun Teja, Taman Jati/PKNS Batu 17, Rawang Batu 16, Taman Rawang Perdana, Taman Amansiara in Gombak, Kampung Dato Lee Kim Sai, Taman Bersatu Rawang, Belmas Johan/R&R/Indah Rawang Industries, Kri Industries and NSK. Jalan Bandar 3 up to Jalan Bandar 18 in Pusat Bandar Puchong, would face supply disruption on Aug 22.

Cheap and tasty Food at Restoran Ukhwah 1Malaysia start from RM1

WHERE there's a will, there's a way. This was the motivation that drove Islamic Education Co-operative Malaysia (Ukhwah) president Datuk Rahim Baba (pic) to set up Restoran Ukhwah 1Malaysia in Lorong Medan Tuanku 1. The low prices of food is the main attraction here where customers get a roti canai and teh tarik for RM1. Rahim was initially skeptical of the feedback the restaurant would receive when it first opened in 2008. He was then unsure of whether he would be able to sustain his business. "Previously, the affordable food programme was meant for Ukhwah's staff, but we decided to extend it to the public,'' he told The Malay Mail when we visited the restaurant yesterday. "The motivation for setting

up the restaurant was to provide basic and reasonable food for the lower income group." But slowly business picked up and the restaurant received critical acclaim since, as people from all walks of life visited the outlet due to the attractive low prices. Rahim said the famous 1Malaysia restaurant invites monetary sponsorship from corporations as this is part of its survival programme. He said half of the day's earnings as well as food is channelled to various charitable organisations. "Even though the price of sugar is up, sponsors come in. We also have a vegetable farm and wholesalers offer fresh vegetables to us.' "I also feel many restaurants

out there are taking advantage of the rise in food prices by hiking up prices as and when they like." He said neighbouring restaurant owners do complain about the low food prices he offers. Rahim said people who apply for jobs at the restaurant can also be demanding. "But being a cooperative, we can't always cater to their

demands. At best, we give them a basic salary with food and lodging." Restaurant manager Idris Sani Mukhtar said he had a good control of the restaurant since it opened three years ago. "All our meals are cooked in the restaurant. Out peak hours are usually during lunch time, but it becomes quiet during the fasting month. "We now have outlets in Petaling Jaya and Taiping." Customers are happy with the affordability and service offered. Roshidah Rosli, a secretary from Rawang, has been a regular to the restaurant. "Every year I come with my family and break fast here. The RM12 Ramadan Buffet is a big attraction for my family," said the 30-year-old motherof-three.

Affordable menu ● RM1 — For a slice of roti canai and teh tarik ● RM2.90 — For a plate of rice with a choice of meat/ chicken/fish and vegetables with water for RM2.90 or with a sweet beverage is RM3. ● Operations are from MonSun (from 7am to 9pm) ● Menu includes — Roti

Canai, Teh Tarik, Nescafe, Sambal Terung, Tempoyak, Asam Ikan Pedas, Chicken Curry, Thai Chicken Curry, Spiced Beef, Long Beans cooked with chillies and local kuih. ● For more information, contact Restoran Ukhwah at 03-2691 4221/016-2377652

She applauds the restaurant for making home-cooked food, as she hardly has time to cook for her family on weekdays being a working mother. School teacher Normashitah Rosli said she is happy with the Ramadan Buffet spread. "I come from Seremban to

try this special fish dish.'' Tarmizi Abdul Manaf, 28, who dropped in from Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman after Hari Raya shopping said he decided to stop by after reading about the meals offered at the restaurant. "I've had a meal and I am satisfied."

Justice seen, justice done

FLIPPING through a particular news report yesterday brought me back to a day at the Kuala Lumpur courthouse many years ago. I was, at the time, on the court reporting beat and was on my lunch break in the Press room when an elderly pakcik’s head popped through the door. After giving his salam, he asked if any of us (there were a couple of reporters in the room) were lawyers, to which we replied in the negative. Pakcik was asked why he wanted to see one. In a low, hushed tone, he asked, after being told that we were journalists, if we knew any lawyer who would represent his son, caught for, if my memory serves me correctly, a drug offence, for a nominal sum, or even for free. It must have been hard for him to enquire, and share with a bunch of strangers the fact that his own flesh and blood was in trouble with the law. He must have also known that it was a risk, considering we were

on Wednesday newshounds who could very well end up reporting his son’s case that very day after he had unwittingly alerted us to it. One of the reporters suggested trying the Legal Aid Bureau. Pakcik’s face lit up. There was hope. He muttered his thanks and left. Later, I bumped into him and he told me he couldn’t get the bureau’s help. “Mana pakcik nak cari duit bayar lawyer?” was more or less the question the dejected man asked before he walked away. You see, the bureau, despite the fact that it was a government-run set-up to assist the needy, didn’t handle criminal cases — unless you were pleading guilty to an offence, ironically enough.

It was certainly a strange animal. The bureau was restricted by the Legal Aid Act 1971 that prohibited assigned lawyers to provide representation to an arrested person. The same Act also confined representation to those wanting to plead guilty to a criminal charge or those charged under the Minor Offences Act 1995. Its lawyers could not touch a case where the accused wanted to claim trial. Some quarters had lambasted the bureau’s existence as “lame” as it was not seen as a serious effort to provide legal representation to the needy. Questions had also been asked on why this was the case since it was receiving government grants

Also present were Redberry chief executive officer Datuk Siew Ka Wei, Redberry group business development director Siew Yuen Tuck, Redberry chief operating officer David Ho,

"On behalf of the Redberry group, I'd like to offer my heartiest welcome to all our guests this evening," said Mohamed Al-Amin in his opening speech. This was followed by a video montage created by Redberry staff featuring the various departments within the group wishing Selamat Berbuka Puasa and Selamat Hari Raya through personal speeches as well as improvised individual and group song performances. Ka Wei and other senior executives acted as judges to select the best performances from the montage. The winner was Redberry's Contact Center, while second and third were Redberry's graphics department and The Malaysian Reserve's Unreserved magazine. After the breaking of fast, the evening was rounded off with a lucky draw. The grand prize, a 23-inch LCD plasma television set and gift hamper, was won by Contact Center intern Tan Kok King, 24, who joined the company only three months ago. Yuen Tuck said the event was meant to bring all Redberry staff closer as all the 10 companies had only recently been integrated this year. that ran into millions of ringgit annually, one report said — and yet, would only offer services for mainly minor offences. Its lawyers, unlike the lawyers of the Bar Council, were also given fee waivers for filing documents in court. All the perks, and not the clout. Nor, suspiciously, the commitment. Come October, however, anyone arrested for criminal offences and earning less than RM25,000 a year can get free legal aid from the National Legal Aid Foundation (NLAF). Those who earn between RM25,000 and RM36,000 a year need to pay only a token sum of RM300. I am glad, and wish the NLAF all the best. We definitely need initiatives like this to work. For eons now, those familiar with the operations of courtrooms will be able to tell you there were problems getting pro bono (free) legal representation from the bureau. During my days covering courts, I cannot recall a time when there were actually people in the bureau offices. That was

years ago, of course, but I remember filing stories from the bureau’s office at the KL courthouse since it was vacant most of the time. Personally, I agree that the bureau deserves the criticisms it has been getting. It seems that for a long time before the formation of NLAF, the onus to provide free legal representation and advice for criminal cases was exclusively that of the Bar Council via its Legal Aid Centres. The Bar Council lawyers did it pro bono, and yet there were issues like the absence of funding and waiver of filing fees unlike the perks enjoyed by their fairly dormant colleagues attached to the Legal Aid Bureau. At a Press conference two days ago, NLAF alternate director Ragunath Kesavan promised immediate legal representation from lawyers with the foundation — which received a RM5 million grant from the offices of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak — to any Malaysian arrested and remanded. It currently has 1,000

lawyers and hopes to have 3,000 signing up as members. It also hopes to get 500 syariah lawyers to assist in syariah criminal cases. Ragunath said the foundation hoped to get young lawyers to join. The exposure would be good, and they would be paid RM250 a day handling remand cases. He also shared the fact that 80 per cent of Malaysians go unrepresented when arrested. I hope lawyers take up the cause and right this anomaly. Kudos must also go to the government, especially Najib, for listening and acting on the grouses of the rakyat. I wish Ragunath and company all the best, and at the same time, caution that this venture must not be allowed to falter. The nation owes that much to that pakcik, and the likes of him... She wants to be 'Chong' again NRD says second surname change only allowed after divorce

AFTER meeting the man of her dreams and deciding to get married to him last year, IRENE CHONG, a Malaysian residing in Melbourne, Australia, changed her surname to that of her spouse. "I made the application to the National Registration Department (NRD) for the change of surname last year while we were back in Kuala Lumpur for a holiday. The application was approved after almost a year." A complication arose

when the marriage did not work out. "We had a child together and my daughter is now 10 months old," says CHONG, who works in a construction union. She says she decided to leave him after he allegedly turned abusive. When CHONG filed another application with the NRD to revert to her original surname, it was rejected. "The reason they gave

is that a person is only allowed to change their surname once." CHONG is not able to provide proof of splitting up with her husband as he has

refused to sign the divorce papers. "My husband says I will not see our child again if I were to get a divorce from him," she claims. CHONG, who has submitted an appeal to the NRD, is not able to meet the NRD staff to explain her problem. "Since I am living in Melbourne, my dad is handling the appeal process for me here." She says even if there is no divorce, she still wants

to revert to her original surname. "I'm still a citizen. Don't I have the right to change my surname? If this is not allowed, I'm worried about claiming properties in the future with a different surname." ● A SPOKESMAN for the National Registration Department says the application to revert to the maiden surname is allowed after a divorce.

"All CHONG has to do is to provide us with the relevant documents so that we can go ahead and process the application. "The documents needed include her identity card and her marriage divorce letter." When contacted, CHONG says she will be return to Kuala Lumpur in January to sort out the problem with NRD. "Hopefully, everything will go smoothly."

Only RAs can request speed bumps

DANGEROUS: Speeding cars are one reason why residents in Jalan 17/2 want bumps placed on the road — Pic: Ashraf Shamsul Azlan

RESIDENTS in Jalan 17/2 want the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) to place speed bumps on the road to prevent accidents. They say they have submitted individual applications to the council. NORMAH BAHIRI says she has sent two letters to the council since last year "but they have not sent any officer to look at the place". She says the residents want speed bumps to be placed because more vehicles are using the road as a shortcut to Jalan 17/21 and 17/1, which head to the Sprint Highway and Jalan Universiti. NORMAH says there have been several near-accidents. "Just last month, an elderly resident was nearly knocked down by a car." Staff nurse LATIFAH AWANG KECHIK, 22, feels there is no reason for the council to delay placing speed bumps on the road. "It is common to see cars speeding down the road," she says. "This is dangerous for those

residents, especially school children, who want to cross the road to get to one of the bus stops." TAN KIM GUAN, 42, who have been staying in the area for 10 years, agrees with LATIFAH and says it will be a good idea to place the speed bumps near the bus stops.

● PETALING JAYA City Council public relations officer Zainun Zakaria says application for speed bumps can only be made by the Residents' Association (RA). "Once we receive the official request from them, our officer will check the site and verify whether it is suitable to built speed bumps there. "Residents have to apply through their RAs to avoid conflicting requests based on individuals needs." Zainun advises the RA in Jalan 17/2 to submit its application to the council's public relations department.

MOTORISTS and motorcyclists are wary of stones and pebbles everytime they use Jalan Enggang Keramat in front of the Hulu Kelang Industrial Zone. They are afraid the stones or pebbles might shatter their windscreens or, worse, cause an accident. PUSPHA KALIAPPAN says the problem started in July when a contractor appointed by the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council carried out upgrading work along the stretch. "The upgrading work was carried out in front of the Customs office, leaving stones scattered along Jalan

GETS THE ACTION Enggang," she says. Heavy traffic, coupled by rain, caused more stones to be dislodged and making holes in the road. "Motorists have to slow down to avoid the stones or pebbles hitting their cars or shattering their windscreens. The problem becomes serious at night when you can't see the road well. "Motorcyclists also have to be cautious that they do

not run over the stones and skid." PUSPHA, who works at the industrial zone, filed a complaint with the municipal council. "I hope the council acts quickly before an accident takes place." ● The Ampang Jaya Municipal Council, which was alerted by Hotline to PUSPHA's complaint, sent its officers to look at the road on Aug 8. They were accompanied by officers from Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas). "The problem was caused by damage to an

underground pipe and it will be repaired by Syabas immediately," says the council's public relations officer, Norhayati Ahmad. "The council will monitor the situation from time to time." She says enquiries on such issues may be directed to the MPAJ Public Relations Division or the Planning Department at 03-4297 8271. When contacted, PUSPHA confirms the stretch of Jalan Enggang Keramat was repaired last week. "I'm satisfied with the road condition."

Card dormant if unused for one year GAN JIN LEE, of Petaling Jaya, has a problem with his Touch 'n Go card — he is able to use it for public transport but not for paying toll. Admitting that he has not used the card to pay toll for about three years, he says it was rejected when he passed through the ELITE highway toll plaza near USJ, Subang, on Aug 4. Upon getting his card checked at the Touch 'n Go Sdn Bhd branch in Subang Jaya, he was shocked to learn the card has become inactive. "The counter staff told me I’ll be charged RM5 for each year the card has been inactive and I would need

to pay RM15 to reactivate my card." GAN says no one had informed him the card will become inactive if not used for a certain period. And he finds it strange to be told the card is inactive when he is able to use it to pay for fares on the LRT and RapidKL buses. "It does not make sense. I asked the counter staff why and she didn't know." Annoyed that he has pay RM5 for each year the card has been inactive, GAN says: "I want them to reactivate my card or replace it with a new one." ● TOUCH 'N GO SDN BHD's customer service department says a card will

become inactive or dormant if it has not been used or reloaded for 12 months. "A dormant card requires exceptional handling and an administrative fee of RM5 is charged, in accordance with the terms and conditions of the card usage," a spokesman for the department says. "If a dormant card continues to remain inactive, a maintenance fee of RM5 will be charged and deducted from the remaining card balance once every six months. "Therefore, we advise cardholders to use or reload the card at least once a year to enjoy continuous usage of the card. "Alternatively, users can transfer the card to another

user and update us on the new user's details. "In GAN's case, his Touch 'n Go card had become dormant since June 2009. We have contacted him and addressed the matter accordingly. "We would like to advise Touch 'n Go users facing a similar problem to submit their feedback online via e-Customer Service at www.touchngo.com.my. "Alternatively, customers can contact our Careline at 03-2714 8888 or email careline@touchngo. com.my." When contacted, GAN says he received a new Touch 'n Go card on Aug 9 and has been using it since.

PJ: Teaching profession

Making of a true teacher THE best educators are teachers who teach from the heart, not from the book. It d o e s n’t m e an t h at books are worthless or that they are not important. Without an inspiring teacher, indeed a tireless mentor, e ven t he most exquisite or the greatest book would not suffice. Nay, it will be useless. A true teacher is one who has the gift to instill naturally a sense of awe and wonder to his students. He is the one who can inculcate in a harmonious manner the virtue of diligence and the incontestable need for discipline both mental and physical; he who has the inherent moral ascendancy to guide his students to the ladders

of values without a sense of arbitrary authority; who has the necessary skills and reasonable method to pass and transmit raw knowledge to his children. A good teacher is one who has the unquestionable devotion to implant virtue and hammer a sense of character and moral worth towards his students. I am conceding that not all teachers are true teachers, not all educators are genuine educators and not all mentors are real mentors! There is a need to distinguish between a teacher who merely teaches for the sake of teaching, and a teacher who educates, cultivates and touches lives. The first is a mere occupation, the latter a profes-

sion. To the former it is but a mere job, but to the latter it is a pure devotion, a sacrifice, a struggle, a life! Hence, the determinative question pertinent for our analysis is: do we merely teach just for the sake of saying we are teaching? Or, are we teaching for the primordial reason of educating our young, inculcating values and virtues in them and touching our pupils' lives? Our retort and reply to the said examination would unmistakably reveal what kind of teachers we are! Wo l f g a n g A m a d e u s Mozar t ass er ted t hat “Neither a lofty degree of intelligence nor imagination nor both together go to the making of genius. Love, love, love, that is the

soul of a genius”. Un d o u b t e d l y, i f t h e teacher has no concern or love for the welfare and the general well-being of his/her students, then the teacher is not a true teacher but simply a worker in the school, or worst, a mere employee of the said educational institution. The primordial obligation of a teacher is to inspire and guide his pupils to think unlimitedly, to wonder unceasingly, to dare to ask beyond imagination, to question without hesitation, to ask unafraid, to speak their minds, to express themselves boldly and courageously, to open up both their hearts and souls. It is my fervent belief that the ultimate duty of

the teacher is to teach his students not what to think but how to think. A true teacher is the one who could gear his students to think for themselves, independently of the teaching and rearing and training of the teacher himself. He/she must teach them to craft their own paradigm, to constr uct their own truths, to create their own foundations, to answer their own queries and questions. That’s the true value of a real teacher; not simply teaching in order for his students to conquer the provinces of facts and information but, most importantly, he/she is helping them laboriously to grasp the inner insights which are undeniably the key

towards them attaining/ arriving at the mountains of knowledge and reaching ultimately the kingdom of wisdom. As S ocrates himself expressed it so eloquently, “The unexamined life is not worth living”. Henceforth, to teach, to inspire and to guide is to offer our soul for the sole benefit of our young. Most of the people are ignorant and innocent and they need the likes of The Malay Mail to warn them of the dangers ahead in the form of cheating

I agree with the Home Ministry's secretary-general who insisted it was "impossible" for security features embedded in both the MyKad and the Malaysian passport to be copied. What he failed to realise is that these documents can be faked without the security features. All it needs for a fake MyKad is to just look like the genuine MyKad. With fraudsters, this is possible. My suggestion is that in

order to know the difference between a genuine and a fake MyKad, the police and the relevant authorities must carry with them scanners and make random checks on suspicious characters. The scanner will immediately reveal whether the document is genuine or fake. With security features it will be genuine and without them, it is a fake. The secret is to be equipped with scanne rs , and c atch t he fraudsters. Anandh

British police foil riots at Olympic sites BRITISH police foiled a planned attack by rioters on the site of the 2012 Olympics in London after they intercepted BlackBerry and Twitter messages about the plot, a top officer said yesterday. Metropolitan Police assistant commissioner Lynne Owens told lawmakers that police and site security guards were deployed to protect the Games venues after officers monitoring social networking found evidence they were targets. Owens said Oxford Street, a popular shopping destination for tourists, and Westfield, one of the biggest shopping centres in Europe which is situated in west London, were also targets, according to the intercepted messages. "On that night through Twitter and BBM there was intelligence that the Olympic site, both Westfield and Oxford Street were indeed going to be targeted," Owens told a special parliamentary hearing on the riots. — AFP

The rock-festival style celebration of World Youth Day has drawn faithful from 193 nations, according to organisers, but also criticism in the midst of Spain's economic hardship. From a vast white stage adorned with an image of Mary and Jesus before City Hall in the emblematic Plaza Cibeles square, Madrid's archbishop, Cardinal Antonio Maria Rouco Varela, celebrated the inaugural mass in the evening. Some 800 bishops, archbishops and cardinals from around the world joined him, many shielding themselves from the sun with white umbrellas.

Another 8,000 priests concelebrated the mass. The service, accompanied by hundreds of choristers, was dedicated to the late Pope John Paul II, who launched the first festival in 1986 as a way to revitalise the faith among young Catholics. Railing against "rampant moral and spiritual relativism," the Madrid archbishop urged young people in the 21st century to follow the path of the "humble, simple pilgrim". "Globalisation, new technologies of communication, the economic crisis, and so on, have determined how you are, for the better and, often, for the worse," he said in his homily. "Not finding a solid foundation for your lives in today's society and culture, nor often in the family, it is powerfully tempting for you to go to the limit and lose direction on the

path of life," he warned. Before the mass, pop music blared out for hours from massive speakers in the city centre as young pilgrims, many wearing yellow World Youth Day T-shirts and floppy hats, gathered in temperatures of 35°C. "Basically John Paul is my idol, he is the patron of World Youth Day," said Desmond Jansen, a 23-year-old IT technician from Malaysia. "I was transformed into a better person after the previous World Youth Day in Australia." Hiroshi Niwuya, a 22-yearold student from Osaka, Japan, said: "I really wanted to come here for the pope because there are few Christians in Japan and I wanted to be surrounded by others who share my faith." The 84-year-old pontiff lands tomorrow to join the final four days of the party. — AFP

Tea Party affecting recovery, says Obama PRESIDENT Barack Obama accused Republican Tea Party activists of holding back the economic recovery yesterday, hiking pressure on Congress to pass his yetto-be unveiled jobs plan. On the second day of a three-day bus tour of midwestern States, Obama expanded on his theme that political brinksmanship in Washington was harming America's capacity to speed up the slowed recovery. "The only question is if, as a nation, we're going to do what it takes to grow this economy and put people back to work right now," Obama said as he opened a Rural Economic Forum in northeastern Iowa. "Can we get our politics to match up with the decency of our people?" he asked, renewing his push to extend a payroll tax cut, secure jobs help for returning war veterans and develop new generation fuels. "The only thing that's preventing us from passing the bills I just mentioned is the refusal of a faction in Congress to put country ahead of party. "And that has to stop. Our economy cannot afford it. Our economy can't afford it." Obama was referring to conser vative Republicans in the House of Representatives, who drove the United States to the brink of economic default in a dispute over raising the government's debt ceiling. — AFP

Perry roundly rebuked

Republican under fire over 'treasonous' Bernanke remarks PRESIDENTIAL hopeful and Texas Governor Rick Perry drew rebukes from fellow Republicans and the White House yesterday for remarks seen as threats of violence against Federal Reserve chief Ben Bernanke. Campaigning in the heartland State of Iowa, Perry warned on Monday that he would view attempts by Bernanke to boost the US economy before next year's November elections as "almost treasonous" and invoked the specter of mob justice. "If this guy prints more money between now and the election, I don't know what y'all would do to him in Iowa, but we would treat him pretty ugly down in Texas," Perry told supporters at a backyard get-together. "I mean, printing more money to play politics at this particular time in American history is almost treacherous, or treasonous, in my opinion," Perry said. The White House fired back yesterday, with spokesman Jay Carney telling reporters:"When you're running for president you have to think about what you're saying, because your words have greater impact." "We take the independence of the Federal Reserve quite seriously," he stressed. Perry also took fire from fellow Republicans, includ-

ing several former aides to Republican former president George W. Bush, who first named Bernanke to the post, who warned he was damaging his White House bid. Bush political guru Karl Rove warned on Fox News Business television that the comments sounded like Perry was going to "take him (Bernanke) out behind the barn and whup him" and warned the candidate "did not help his cause." "To accuse Bernanke of being a traitor to his country, treason is a crime punishable by death, to say you are going to treat him pretty ugly if he was down in Texas, this was unpresidential and unnecessary," said Rove. Fo r m e r Wh it e Ho u s e spokesman Tony Fratto took to Twitter to call the comments "inappropriate and unpresidential." Another former Bush aide, Peter Wehner, said in a blog post: "People shouldn't throw around the words 'almost treasonous' loosely; and certainly a person running for president shouldn't do such a thing." "To say someone is treasonous means he is a traitor to his country. In the long catalogue of crimes an individual can commit, there are not many that are worse than treason," Wehner said on the web site of Commentary Magazine.

Anti-graft activist stays in jail AN Indian anti-corruption activist refused to leave jail yesterday after being held in custody for several hours to prevent him starting a highprofile hunger strike in New Delhi. Veteran campaigner Anna Hazare, 74, was released by authorities but said he would only walk out of prison if his demands to be allowed to hold a public "fast unto death" in a city park were met, officials told media. About 1,400 Hazare supporters were set free after being held during the day inside a sports stadium in a police operation that was widely criticised as an attempt to quell dissent. Corruption has become a key issue of public discontent in India, and Hazare has emerged as a prominent national figure for his campaign to demand that a new anti-graft law currently before parliament is strengthened. -- AFP

But the assault on Bernanke came amid deep skepticism among core Republican voters about the role the US Federal Reserve plays in steadying the US economy and broader worries about stubbornly high US unemployment. Demo cratic National Committee spokeswoman Melanie Rousell dismissed

Perry's unusual broadside at Bernanke as "inflammatory schoolboy taunts" that left other Republican candidates looking positively thoughtful. She also invoked Perry's past controversial remarks suggesting Texas might secede, saying he "would have needed a passport to visit Iowa if he had his way." — AFP

SEVEN civilians were killed and eight others wounded yesterday in a motorcycle bomb blast at a market in southern Afghanistan, officials said. The attack happened at a market in Uruzgan province at about 6.30pm local time as people were shopping in preparation for breaking their Ramadan fast. Khan Aqa Myahkhel, health director for Uruzgan, said: "In this incident, eight people were brought to the hospital. We got information that seven civilians are dead."

The blast happened in Dihrawud district, close to the border with Helmand province. Details were also confirmed by the director of the provincial council, Amanullah Hotaki. The Taliban were not immediately contactable for comment on whether they were behind the latest blast. Southern Afghanistan is one of the most dangerous parts of the war-torn country and is frequently wracked by serious violence in the near 10-year long insurgency.

Civilians are the biggest casualties in the war in Afghanistan, where around 140,000 foreign forces are stationed. Last year was the bloodiest yet for civilians, with the United Nations recording 2,777 fatalities. A total of 1,462 civilians were also killed in the first half of this year, according to UN figures, an increase of 15 per cent over the same period last year, with insurgent attacks blamed for 80 per cent of fatalities overall. — AFP

SWEDISH air operator SAS yesterday cancelled a flight from Stockholm to Chicago because of an unruly passenger — a mouse. The rodent was spotted ahead of boarding on the 0815 GMT flight but evaded the many mousetraps laid to catch it, SAS said. Company spokesman Anders Lindstroem said: "For safety reasons, you don't board when there's a mouse on board. We hope to find it overnight," he said, adding that the 250 passengers on the Airbus A330 flight had been understanding. Apart from disturbing passengers, a mouse on board a flight is a potential danger as it could creep in amongst cables, Lindstroem said, adding that a complete inspection would be carried out once the mouse was caught. The spokesman said it was the first time a mouse had been discovered on an SAS plane. — AFP

Hacking issue 'widely discussed' BRITISH lawmakers released yesterday a letter from a former News of the World journalist claiming phone hacking was "widely discussed" at the tabloid and warned they could recall James Murdoch to give evidence. Clive Goodman, the paper's former royal editor who was jailed for hacking in 2007, also alleged that ex-editor Andy Coulson, who went on to become Prime Minister David Cameron's media chief, tried to cover up the scandal. The letter released by parliament's media committee directly contradicts claims by media tycoon Rupert Murdoch's top lieutenants that they were unaware of the phone hacking and that Goodman was a rogue reporter. — AFP

Harry splits from lingerie model girlfriend IT'S over — for now at least! Prince Harry has split up with lingerie model Florence Brudenell-Bruce (pic), The Sun reports. The pair reportedly hooked up in June, but 26-year-old Harry told friends that he does not want to be "tied down" and is "concentrating on his Apache helicopter training," sources said. He considered joining the model, nicknamed "Flee," for a vacation on Spain's party island of Ibiza this month, but the romantic getaway never happened. Instead, Harry and pals were recently seen surrounded by bikini-clad girls on the nearby island of Majorca, while the blonde remained in the UK. Last month, she reportedly told friends, "I think I'm in love". Brudenell-Bruce knew the young royal for more than six years before romance blossomed. They are even distant cousins. A Clarence House spokesman said that the rumored breakup was a private affair, adding that "we never provide a running commentary on these sorts of things".

Taylor Momsen chooses music over acting Taylor Momsen's acting days are over. The 18-year-old Pretty Reckless singer told Elle magazine that she's "quit acting" and wants to focus solely on her music career. "I quit Gossip Girl and now tour and am in a band," she told the site. "That's pretty much all I want to do. Hopefully, I'll be able to only do that for the rest of my life." In May, Us Weekly confirmed she would not be reprising her role as Jenny Humphrey on the CW hit. "[Music] is all I ever wanted to do with my life," she told Us in April. "I wanted to make records and tour, so it's very exciting that our first record is coming out and people can actually hear it."

Madonna's move shot down Court dismisses pop star's attempt to stop former employees' suits

A MALAWI court yesterday dismissed a legal action by US pop diva Madonna to prevent her charity project from being sued by former employees for unfair dismissal and nonpayment of benefits. "It would be premature to remove (Raising Malawi Inc) RMI from the case because several issues of employee-employer relationship, economic realities and group liability have been raised," according to a ruling by Jack Nriva, deputy chairperson of the industrial relations court. Nriva said it would be "premature and hasty to bar the applicants from suing RMI. In all fairness, I believe the application to remove RMI as party herein ought to be, and is hereby dismissed". He said it would be less prejudicial to RMI if it remains as party to the proceedings. Eight staff members of Raising Malawi Academy for Girls (RMAG) lodged the

Levine shoots down gay rumours, outs 'Idol'

What's one big difference between The Voice and American Idol? If you ask Adam Levine, it's how the shows treat their gay contestants. "What's always pissed me off about Idol is wanting to mask that, for that to go unspoken. C'mon," he tells Out magazine (pic). "You can't be publicly gay? At this point? On a singing competition? Give me a break. You can't hide basic components of these people's lives." While The Voice featured four openly gay singers last season, Idol has come under fire over the years for allegedly keeping its gay contestants in the closet while they're on the show — most notably with Adam Lambert two years ago. "The fact The Voice didn't have any qualms about being completely open about it is a great thing," Levine adds. Despite his criticism, the

Maroon 5 frontman — who revealed his younger brother is gay to Out — recognises that Idol is still the big man on campus. "It's a cultural institution. On The Voice, we just care about a different list of things. It's for a different type of person, I guess." He also tells Us Magazine he doesn't mind the gay rumours.

"I'm extremely comfortable in my sexuality, so I can think, 'Oh, that's a good-looking dude'. "There's no way to hide my straightness," Levine adds, "but if people didn't think there was a small chance I was gay, then I wouldn't be doing my job well. Look at the best ones, guys whose sexuality was always questioned. Bowie. Jagger. Freddie Mercury. I wouldn't be the front man of a band if that question hadn't come up at some point." Needless to say, the 32-yearold Voice mentor, who's currently dating Victoria's Secret model Anne Vyalitsyna, grew up in a very tolerant household. "I can single-handedly dispel any ideas that sexuality is acquired," Levine laughs. "Trust me, you're born with it. My brother is gay, and we knew when he was two. We all knew."

Book: Chanel spied for Nazis LEGENDARY French designer Coco Chanel (pic) spied for the Nazis during the German occupation of France in World War II, according to a new book. Sleeping with the Enemy: Coco Chanel's Secret War, by Hal Vaughan, expands on long-standing evidence that the iconic designer had a double l i fe and w a s the lover of a spy, Baron Hans Gunther von Dincklage. "Sleeping with the Enemy pieces together how Coco Chanel became a German Intelligence operative; how and why she was enlisted in a number of spy missions; how she escaped arrest in France after the war," New York publishers Knopf said. Vaughan's book reveals not only was Chanel recruited to the Abwehr military intelligence organisation but that

von Dincklage was himself a "Nazi master spy". He "ran a spy ring in the Mediterranean and in Paris and reported directly to Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels, right hand of Hitler". Chanel was also "fiercely" ant i-S emit ic, the book says, although at the time she would not have stood out among numerous other high-profile compatriots later seen as having collaborated during the 1940-44 occupation. Chanel, an orphan who became a revolutionar y fashion designer, moved to Switzerland after the war before returning to Paris to take up her career in fashion. She was never charged with any wrongdoing and died in 1971.

Strauss-Kahn maid lawyers clash on medical evidence LAWYERS for Dominique StraussKahn and the maid who accuses the French politician of a brutal sex assault clashed yesterday over whether medical reports bolster her allegations. The exchange was the latest skirmish ahead of what could be a crucial court hearing next Tuesday for Strauss-Kahn, who is free on bail. Attor n e y s for t h e m ai d, Nafissatou Diallo, told French newspaper L'Express that the medical report by doctors who examined her after the alleged incident found injuries consistent with assault and rape. But Wi l l i am Tay l or an d Benjamin Brafman, the lawyers for Strauss-Kahn, attacked those assertions, saying the physical condition of Diallo could easily have shown she had recently engaged in consensual sex, even before the alleged attack. The "use of the medical reports

to confirm or bolster the charges against Mr Strauss-Kahn is misleading and deceitful," they said in a statement. "The medical reports confirm that the complainant did not have any injury caused by a forcible encounter. "The physical descriptions of the complainant in the medical reports are not injuries at all, and are a common condition consistent with many possible causes other than a sexual assault, including consensual sexual activity, days before the incident." At next week's hearing, prosecutors are expected to reveal whether they will drop charges or press their case against the former head of the International Monetary Fund and highly touted potential candidate for the French presidency. The prosecution case has unraveled in recent weeks after the District Attorney's office said

there were problems with Diallo's credibility, a key factor in a trial where she would be the main prosecution witness. "There is certainly a chance that prosecutors will drop the criminal charges against DSK because Diallo has considerable credibility baggage," said attorney and former federal prosecutor Marcellus McRae. "However, given the enormous resources devoted to this case, the widespread media attention, and the need to preserve the public’s perception of the DA’s office as a diligent and trusted actor, it would also not be surprising to see the prosecutors seek additional time to investigate the matter before making any final decisions." While doubt wavers over the criminal prosecution, Diallo's lawyers have filed a civil lawsuit against Strauss-Kahn and are seeking unspecified damages. Another reason to breastfeed AFRICAN-American women who do not breastfeed their babies face a higher risk of getting an aggressive form of breast cancer than their counterparts who nurse, said a US study today. The analysis found that women who had two or more children faced a 50 per cent increased risk of hormone receptor-negative breast cancer, one of the toughest kinds to treat. But this higher risk was only present in women who did not breastfeed their children. "African-American women are more likely to have had a greater number of full-term births and less likely to have breast-fed their babies," said Julie Palmer, professor of epidemiology at the Slone Epidemiology Center at Boston University. "This study shows a clear link between that and hormone receptornegative breast cancer." Data for the research, published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research, came from the Black Women's Health Study which has followed 59,000 women since 1995. -- AFP

Fresh-faced with talen

By ANU VENUGOPAL anu@mmail.com.my SINGER, songwriter Yuna has got a lot going on in her life. Currently based in Los Angeles, the US, the 24-year-old has joined the ranks of Malaysians making it big out of the country, after performing for a soldout audience at well-known venue, Mercury Lounge in New York City. In May, she joined seminal recording artiste Raphael Saadiq on the road for a string of dates with performances in Baltimore, Washington DC, and NYC’s Webster Hall. She spends her time writing and recording music, working on her photography skills and managing her Malaysian-based clothing shop, I Am Jet Fuel. With her US debut EP Decorate out digitally, a full album now out and a performance at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas (DFP) next

month, Yuna is one busy young woman. Still, Malaysia’s fresh-faced acoustic, alternative princess takes time off every day to take care of her skin. “I make sure that every day before I leave the house for work, and when I come back before I sleep, I'll remove my make up,

then I cleanse and tone, and then moisturise. It's so important to keep my skin mois-

turised using Olay Total Effects,” said Yuna, whose real name is Yunalis Zarai.

I feel like your skin needs protection because it protects your body. Plus, healthy skin shows that you are healthy and that is important if you want to appear as a positive, healthy person. — Yuna

Of course, she was never always so dedicated to her beauty regime. When she was younger she didn’t care much about her skin (she didn’t have problematic skin like many Malaysians). “As I reached my 20s, I realised that my skin has started to react to the environment. Now I really see it as an important thing to have a proper skincare regime,” she said. Growing up as the only child, Yuna was taught the dos and don’ts of taking care of her skin by her mother as a teenager. When she went to college to pursue law, it was her room-

mates that gave her tips and advice — something she still treasures until now. Like many women around her age, Yuna to has blackheads and whiteheads. The singer who is signed to Fader Label, goes for facials to get them treated, whenever possible. More often, she makes sure she tones and moisturises her skin so it doesn’t become worse. “Sometimes I get so busy I don't really get the chance to have a balanced diet, or enough sleep, so it does affect my skin. Still, to counter that, I drink lots of water,” Yuna said. An icon of moderate and

Are your beliefs ageing WE all know the importance of skin care. However, there is more to it than applying doses of whitening cream — a beauty regime that many Asian women succumb to these days. Every woman should have a basic beauty regimen that covers three important aspects: cleansing, moisturising and sun protection. Skin whitening products typically only cover a subset of these skin ageing concerns and has nothing much else to offer the skin. According to a survey done by facial skin care brand Olay, while a majority of Asian women (65 per cent) believe that youthful-looking skin is an important component of beautiful skin, onethird of women in their 20s who have seen signs of skin ageing are only using whitening skincare and not giving their skin the proper treatment it deserves. With the

aim of challenging women’s understanding of skin-ageing concerns and perceptions of what can be achieved for their skin, Olay recently launched an Asia-wide survey to uncover the type of skin Asian women consider as ideal, find out insights of when women start seeing signs of ageing and learn what they do about it. Co-created by Olay and Dr Joyce Lim, an established Singapore-based dermatologist, the survey was conducted by Taylor Nelson Sofres (TNS), an independent research agency, on 1,800 women between the ages of 20 and 39 in Thailand, India, Indonesia, Korea and the Philippines. While Malaysian women were not directly involved in the survey, the Olay team has routinely conducted consumer research with Malaysian women through group interviews and home visits to help them understand Malaysian women’s skincare practices and needs. While Malaysian women are unique in their own right, they do have much in common with many of the countries surveyed in terms of climate, skin type, lifestyle and skin concerns. “The Olay Beauty Report survey is unique in its scope, and the countries were carefully selected to be broadly representative of women across the region, so we believe its findings are relevant to Malaysian women,” said David Khoo, Olay’s scientist. Among the interesting findings of the survey is that there is a disparity of in what women desire and what they actually

do for their skin. Research suggests this could possibly be because Asian women think it is only possible to achieve either fair skin or youthful skin and not both and thus prioritise one type of skincare over the other. It could also be that many women may not recognise changes in their skin condition. “The survey revealed that there were gaps in their understanding of skin ageing. For example, it showed that a majority of women (65 per cent) already start to experience skin changes such as skin dryness, dark spots and prominent pores in their 20s, but most Asian women (85 per cent) did not know these skin concerns are signs of skin ageing,” added Khoo. These gaps in knowledge are perfectly understandable, since skin ageing is a complex issue, and the signs of skin age-

nt to boot experimental attire, Yuna’s fresh and unique sense of fashion has caught the eye of many fashionistas in Malaysia and beyond. Her fresh and flawless skin adds to her distinctive look — clearly Yuna has taken time and effort to take care of her skin, which is one of the priorities in life despite her busy schedule. “I feel like your skin needs protection because it protects your body. Plus, healthy skin shows that you are healthy and that is important if you want to appear as a positive, healthy person,” she said. Yuna is also doing her part in having healthy skin, and keeps

tabs on the latest development on caring for her skin. “It is important to educate yourself about skincare because at the age of 25, your skin starts to age, that’s when it is most prone to wrinkles and acne. It is also important to know what kind of diet you

need, types of vitamins, the best skincare products that would help you take care of your skin,” said Yuna. With the firm belief that healthy skin provides confidence, Yuna is a shining example of achieving success by feeling good about oneself.

you? ing are often gradual. “We are committed to understanding skin in all its complexity, and we want to empower women with our expertise and insights into beauty so that they can always look their best. This is why we are unveiling the Olay Beauty Report,” said Khoo. A majority of Asian women (61 per cent) actually believe that women’s skin in general begins ageing after 30. However, the average age at which Asian women actually begun noticing signs of ageing such as dark spots and uneven skin tone was 25.7 years. These findings are consistent with scientific studies that show that skin ageing becomes evident in the 20’s. In light of this, Dr Joyce Lim, the consultant dermatologist who co-designed the survey, recommends that women should start using anti-ageing skincare in their 20s rather than delay till the 30s. For those wondering about when to start taking care of

your skin, research indicates that the earlier you care for your skin, the better off your skin will be. For example, in an eight-year study Olay conducted on women who started off with dry skin develop fine lines and wrinkles up to two times faster than women who started off with well-hydrated skin. So even an intervention as fundamental as ensuring your skin is well-hydrated can make a huge difference early on. “Anti-ageing skincare is designed to address the skin changes that occur with age. A well-designed anti-ageing

skincare product like Olay Total Effects addresses skin needs from many different aspects, including not just skin dryness but seven signs of skin ageing, which are skin dryness, fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin tone, rough texture, skin dullness, prominent pores and dark spots,” added Khoo. The Olay Total Effects range encompasses all these aspects while targeting seven signs of ageing. Cost effective, time efficient solution, it is an ideal solution for the modern Malaysian woman on the go.

Ultimate pageant guide By CHE'AZ cheaz@mmail.com.my ONCE upon a time, there was a beautiful girl named Andrea Veronica Fonseka. While girls her age were mainly dreaming of a grand life and adventure, or were still clueless about many things, Andrea knew exactly what she wanted. At 19, after being crowned Miss Malaysia Universe, she travelled all the way to Ecuador to compete with other beautiful girls from all over the world for the coveted Miss Universe title. The year was 2004, and interestingly, Andrea was walking in her mother's footstep. Let it be known that her mother is Datin Josephine Fonseka, former Miss Universe Malaysia 1970. Josephine also made the country proud when she became the first Malaysian to move into the Miss Universe semi-final that year. Obviously, it is in the genes. The Fonsekas are a unique mix of lineages — Sinhalese (Sri Lankan), Portuguese, Spanish, Filipino and Chinese. Anyway, seven years after her teen adventure in Ecuador, Andrea is now the national director for Miss Universe Malaysia Organisation (MUMO). In her capacity, she trains, grooms and preps the most promising talents who have the potential to make Malaysia proud at the Miss Universe series. Apart from that, who is Andrea? "I am a daughter, a wife, a sister... not a mother yet. I started out with big dreams and I'd always wanted to be Miss Malaysia, ever since I was like, three years old. "I remember playing outside the house and I fell down and scratched myself. I cried and cried and said that I could not be Miss Malaysia anymore! My mother would come and comfort me. So, I guess this is what I really want to be and I followed that dream that I built," Andrea said. Andrea's upbringing is pretty normal. She went to Taman Petaling Girl School, and was pretty well-adjusted. She said that she was fortunate to go to a government school to have a

pretty normal life. "My father wanted me to be a doctor but I could not do it. Then he insisted me to do law, so I completed my A level and did pre-law. Well, I tried to deviate from doing law but my dad insisted me to finish it. So I completed my studies at the National University of Singapore," she said. Andrea graduated in 2008 and managed to negotiate with her dad that if she completed her studies, she did not have to practise law, and could just follow her dreams. "And here I am today, doing what I love most!," Andrea said. She added that her mother has been her inspiration. However, Josephine did not really encourage her daughter to join the pageant at a young age. "In fact my mum told me not to join yet. But I was already enthusiastic and ready for pageant when I was 19. She said that I would do much better if I were 24 or 25. Yes, I have to agree with that now. However, I went on with my plans and I think if I did not enter Miss Malaysia Universe then, I might not be where

done quite a bit. She hosted the first season of Xfresh.TV, a teen programme produced by Astro's TVIQ. Shortly after moving to Singapore, Andrea became an ambassador for Marie France Bodyline and appeared on numerous magazine covers, including FHM Singapore. This exposure led her to becoming a host on ESPN's Score Today and then suitcase girl number 10 in Deal or No Deal (Singapore) on Mediacorp's Channel 5. Following the success of Deal or No Deal, Channel 5 invited Andrea to co-host the live TV singing contest Live The Dream with Utt and Michelle Chia. Andrea was voted the world's sexiest woman in FHM Singapore’s 100 Sexiest Women in the World for 2007. She also won No.1 ranking for the second time in 2008, making her the first ever repeat winner for FHM's Top 100 Sexiest. Andrea was inducted into the Miss Malaysia Universe Hall of Fame in 2009, and has been recognised for her success and contribution in the regional entertainment industry. In 2010, Andrea became the face of the Malaysia International

I think there's nothing wrong with being vain, as long as you know what you want and you're street smart and know what direction you want to take. I also believe it is important for a woman to be independent. — Andrea Fonseka

I am today. So my parents kind of already knew that if I set my mind on something, I will still go on with it," Andrea said. She also got married young, to Australian lawyer Paul Alexander Dewar on July 31 last year. "Okay, that is another funny part of my life. Basically I got married because I want to have a family. You know when you always plan your life, people say it will never happen, right? Well, in my case it's a little bit different because I am the type of girl who always plans everything, and everything would fall into place. I told myself that I'd meet my husband when I'm 23 or 24, would get married when I'm 25 or 26. "That was exactly what happened. I got married when I was 25 and it has been almost two years now." As a public face, Andrea has

Fashion Week, and fronting the Fashion-TV programme. Now that she is involved in the world of beauty pageant, people are bound to further judge her. "I think there's nothing wrong with being vain, as long as you know what you want and you're street smart and know what direction you want to take. I also believe it is important for a woman to be independent," Andrea said. She believes that there are three categories of women. There are girls who are born beautiful, and they always have it easy because they are pretty and adorable. "Teachers love them and they never had to develop social skills beyond their beauty and these girls are in pageants until today because they are still pretty. But then, they might miss some of the abilities to communicate. Girls who are born so beautiful, had to develop their personality to be

able to be more acceptable, and they are in the second category. Then there are those who are the in-betweens. "They can be beautiful if they put on make-up and if they really take care of themselves, but they never put real interest in it and they end up being somewhere in the middle, or the least outstanding personality. They might be very successful in their career though," Andrea said. She said the girls who are not born so pretty — the ugly ducklings that eventually turn into beautiful swans — are the girls who know what they want. "They really want to do this for themselves, to advance in their careers or just to be part of the industry. And God bless them because, these girls would actually made it accordingly to what they plan to have in their life." Andrea said many people think it is easy to become a Miss Universe. "Well they are definitely wrong! There's a lot of hard work to prepare ourselves to be the best among the best. It's a tough job when you're up there on the stage carrying our nation's name and at the same time you still need to be alert about every single thing." With that in mind, Andrea said the Malaysian faction of the Miss universe organisation plans to get people more into the loop by having a TV programme highlighting the search for the right Miss Universe Malaysia. "Everybody will get to see how difficult it is. We think it is the time for Malaysians to realise that what we are doing here is serious to us and it is not only a matter of looking perfect and beautiful on the stage," Andrea said. The reality programme is called Beauty Camp - The Search For The Next Miss Universe Malaysia and it is expected to share the journey of the aspirants that leads to the Miss Universe Malaysia crowning. "We are still in a discussion phase right now. It will meet the audience very soon and I am quite confident that this programme will be an eye-opener to many out there. We will announce all the updates and we just can't wait to share it with the public!" Andrea said.

Missing daddy relationship at the moment, she is having fun playing the dating game, but she is keen to settle down and commit to a relationship at some point. The pop star said: "I'm dating and happy. I definitely want to get married and I definitely want babies." However, Kelly refuses to settle for just anyone and if a man is wrong for her, she has no hesitation in getting rid of him. Kelly — who is one of the new judges on the UK version of The X Factor — said: "When I noticed myself starting to date a-hole guys, and unavailable guys, I changed that real quick."

Choosing health over image MENA SUVARI (pic) doesn't feel under pressure to stay thin. The American Pie beauty — who is married to concert promoter Simone Sestito — admits it is hard as an actress to not fret about how she looks but she has great parents who make her think about her health over her image. She said: "There definitely is pressure to stay slim and I've seen it around but

I grew up with a family who was always into fresh food and cooking and taking care of yourself. "My mum was a nurse and my father was a doctor and our family really centred on the concept that you are what you eat, so for me my interest in fitness and health is something that I have regardless of being in the industry."

As well as eating healthy, balanced meals, the 32year-old American Beauty star stays in shape by exercising, going on bike rides and jogging. In an interview with Britain's OK! magazine, she said: "I go hiking and I'm into biking and working out at the gym, but here I got into running, which was something I never thought I'd be able to do."

ASHTON KUTCHER is splashing out US$9,000a-week (RM26,833) on a brand new mobile home. The 33-year-old actor — who has replaced Charlie Sheen in Two and a Half Men following the troubled star being fired from the lead role as Charlie Harper earlier this year — will be moving in to the plush new trailer during shooting, according to Australian radio station 2Day FM. With Ashton set to run his production company from the mobile home in between filming, the lavish trailer comes complete with a 60-inch plasma TV, a full bedroom, two bathrooms, a working kitchen, conference area and more than 1,000-square feet of space spread across two floors. Ashton — who will portray broken-hearted

internet billionaire Walden Schmidt in the sitcom — is said to have settled in well on the Two and a Half Men set, and he and wife Demi Moore even threw a party for the cast and crew when the first day of filming wrapped earlier this month. An insider said: "Ashton and Demi were both cute together and friendly with everyone. Everybody is loving Ashton on the set. He's really coming off like a cool low maintenance guy, and with everything that went down with Charlie everyone is breathing a sigh of relief. "He jokes with the crew, has no tantrums, he comes in well studied in his lines — it's such a nice change. So far there have been no issues and everyone is really happy with how it's working out. Nobody is missing Charlie right now."

Don't mess with the Beckhams DAVID BECKHAM admits it will be "interesting" for him when his newborn daughter starts dating. The soccer star and his fashion designer wife Victoria welcomed their first girl, Harper Seven, into the world on July 10 and protective dad David has already come up with a plan when she starts to show an interest in boys. The handsome athlete says he will team up with his three sons — Brooklyn, 12, Romeo, eight, and sixyear-old Cruz — to make

sure Harper is protected at all times. He told Access Hollywood: “She’s got three brothers that will take her, three brothers that will eat with her and three brothers that will bring her back home and a dad waiting for her. So yeah, we’ll see. That’ll be interesting.” David also revealed how he and Victoria don't want any outside help when it comes to raising Harper as they want to do everything themselves. He said: “It’s hard for us to go out and socialise, and go out for dinner because Victoria’s nursing. But that’s the way we want it. We look after her ourselves, the boys look after her, of course. “But Victoria’s doing an amazing job. She’s looking after her so well and she really is so gorgeous.” — Bang Showbiz

KELLY ROWLAND (right) has a "desire" to speak to her estranged father. The former Destiny's Child star has not seen her dad Christopher since her parents split up over 20 years ago but she would like to be reunited with him at some point in the future. The 30-year-old singer — who was raised singlehandedly by her mother, Doris, from the age of seven — said: "I do have a desire to speak to him. But I have to be ready when I make that decision, and I don't want to hurry myself. I've been without him for more than 20 years." While Kelly isn't in a serious

BUKIT JALIL: FENCING

TouchĂŠ Jiha

SARAH NAJIHAH

UiTM's Sarah Najihah fencing her way to international events ALL the years of labour in fencing has finally paid dividends for Sarah Najihah Ahmad Ridzuan or Jiha. She was delighted after being selected to represent Malaysia in the ongoing World University Games in China and Jakarta Sea Games in November. Despite vast experience on the home front competing in four Sukma in 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2010, she has never been to international events. "In three previous Sukmas I won bronze in the team event and fifth in the individual category. Last year, I struck gold and bronze in the team and individual event respectively,"

said Sarah Najihah. "It is an honour to represent the country and make my debut in backto-back high profile sports carnivals. To be selected is a huge success for me. I am not expecting to win medals but it will be an invaluable experience. "These are the fruits of my labour in fencing. After years of training and sacrifices, I finally get to compete in the World University Games and Jakarta Sea Games," said the 22-year-old. Sarah Najihah, studying biomolecular science in Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), said she had been

paying for her own attire, fencing apparatus and training. Since she is not a student of any sports school by choice, she only receives token privileges from relevant authorities. Apart from representing the country, she plans to set up a fencing club in UiTM. The idea has received a positive response from the campus' head of sports Mustaza Ahmad. "To my knowledge, fencing has yet to make an impact in higher educational institutions. For that reason, I propose to set up a club in UiTM," she said.

KUALA LUMPUR: CRICKET

Eight in playing tour

EIGHT students of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) are in the Malaysian cricket team on a playing tour of Sri Lanka this month. Led by skipper Ahmad Faiz Mohd Noor, the others are Faris Almas Lee, Nik Azril Nik Ariffin, Mohd Shafiq Sharif, Aminudin Ramly, Mohd Sharulnizam Yusof, Hazrul Zainal and Nazril Abdul Rahman. The team's mission is to prepare for the International Cricket Council (ICC) World League

Division Six Championship to be hosted by Malaysia on Sept 17 to 24. Established in 2009, the league consists of seven divisions and the top two teams of each group will be promoted. Thus far, the Malaysians have played eight matches against Sri Lankan club sides and registered four victories. Malaysian Malays Cricket Association (MMCA) secretary Rosmanizam Abdullah is proud that these eight students are in

the national team. "We embark on a programme and introduce the boys to UKM as part of the latter's initiative to set up a centre of excellence for cricket," he said. "It is proof of our efforts to make cricket popular among the student population. However, we are still at an infant stage. "Another institution of higher learning that MMCA has established ties with is UiTM. The other is APIIT."

Banking on Lady Luck, again

NAT I O NA L at h l e t e K. Ganthimathi is hoping for "Lady Luck" again. A specialist in the 400m, 800m and 1,500m, Ganthimathi has yet to qualify for the Jakarta Sea Games in November. But she is confident that she will compete in Jakarta in the exclusive Category A instead of Category B for borderline cases or highly recommended by the Malaysian Amateur Athletics Union.

"I am sure that I will qualify with about three months left. It happened before the 2009 Laos Sea Games. At that time, I qualified for the 400m and 1,500m at the eleventh hour," she said. "My experience in Laos had a twist which made it memorable. I also ran the 800m to make up the numbers and won the silver medal. The 800m has since been my pet event with a personal best of 2min 07:99 clocked in Laos. That's the time I must equal or

beat to be eligible for Jakarta." Ganthimathi, from Cameron Highlands and a mass communications student at Universiti Putra Malaysia, said her main obstacle towards qualification was the absence of a strong contender in the country who could push her to clock better times. However, she said her one-month stint in Bulgaria last month was a huge success and a morale booster in her bid to qualify.

JAMAICA have left their 200m national champion Steve Mullings out of their 50-member team for the World Championships in Daegu, South Korea, after local media reported the sprinter had failed a doping test. Jamaican officials confirmed Mullings, the year's third fastest sprinter in the 100m, had

been suspended from the team headlined by triple Olympic and world champion Usain Bolt, but declined to elaborate on what grounds. Bolt, winner of the men's 100m and 200m in world record times of 9.58s and 19.19s, in Berlin two years ago, will be joined in Jamaica's strong 50-member delegation

by fellow defending champions Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who took the women's 100m, women's 400m hurdles champion Melaine Walker and Brigitte Foster-Hylton, the women's 100m hurdles winner. Asafa Powell, who is still in search of his first global title in the men's 100m joins Bolt

IF there is one thing lacking in the Professional Footballers' Association of Malaysia (PFAM) — it would be professionalism. Set up with much pomp and fare on Sept 10, 2009, the launch was attended by FA of Malaysia (FAM) general secretary Datuk Azzudin Ahmad and deputy Sports Commissioner Salleh Ramli. PFAM's pro-tem chairman was Dhinesh Celliah — a man better know in the printing circle than on the field. The general secretary then was former FAM official E.R. Subramaniam. The main objective of PFAM is "to pursue and defend the rights of professional players". Sadly, that is something PFAM have not been able to do. P FA M c l a i m t h e Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with FAM, first tabled last July, has yet to be signed therefore they are not able to "exercise their rights". Why wasn't this thought about prior to the launch? Players claim they were unaware of the association's status. Some don't even know who calls the shots. Subramaniam's name is still registered as the general secretary on the world body's (FIFPro) website despite quitting in July last year. Dayalan Jeevan is the new general secretary. PFAM's Facebook account was last updated on Dec 6, 2010. A player who sits in the PFAM council said: "PFAM were active last year and held meetings once or twice a month. Meetings were about players' salaries and players sacked without concrete

reasons. They also wanted to help conduct football clinics to develop young players. "But I've not heard of anything this year." Ousted Sabah player Jeremy Danker Matthew has a tale to tell. Jeremy was asked to leave in May for apparently "not being good enough". He was sidelined despite assurances by former coach Gary Phillips that he will see action on the field. That never happened as Phillips was given the boot weeks before Jeremy was asked to leave. Sabah FA only handed Jeremy two warning letters instead of the required three before sacking him.

Jeremy has a two-year contract with Sabah and feels shortchanged. However, he is willing to settle for full payment till the end of the year. Naturally, he approached PFAM. "I first requested for PFAM's help in May. I told them I was willing to sign up and be a member but Dayalan said it was not necessary," said Jeremy. "I've handed Dayalan all my original documents but it has been three months now." Jeremy claimed Dayalan, had last week, requested the former to contact FAM assistant secretary Kelly Sathiraj to sort out the matter. Upon learning of Jeremy's

situation, I set up a meeting between Jeremy and Kelly at Wisma FAM on Thursday. After a two-minute ''lecture'' on the importance of reading a contract and knowing one's rights, Kelly contacted Sabah FA to help Jeremy's cause. Jeremy sent Sabah FA his ''wish-list'' the next day and is now looking forward to a promising outcome. Dayalan, however, stressed PFAM can only ''advise'' victimised players at the moment until their MoU with FAM is signed. "I'm working pro bono for PFAM. I'm only able to work half of my capacity at the moment but once the MoU is signed, we can play a bigger role," said Dayalan. "I'm leaving for Holland (FifPro headquarters) on Sunday and with FiFPro's help, we can get FAM to sign the MoU quickly." Dayalan added there are "internal issues that need to be addressed" and PFAM are working towards "free membership for all players till 2013". PFAM were formed to safeguard the welfare of our footballers. But they have yet to do so. Players need to fend for themselves. Read the contents of the contract before signing the dotted line. Know your rights. Otherwise, players will be left at the mercy of their employers.  HARESH DEOL i s a senior journalist with The Malay Mail. He encourages players to fight for their rights. NAT I O NA L s t r i k e r Norshahrul Idlan Talaha believes defending champions Kelantan, Selangor, Te r e n g g a nu a n d Ne g r i Sembilan have an equal shot of claiming the Malaysia Cup this year. Norshahrul, better known as "Mat Yo" on the field, added he and his teammates in Kelantan are feeling the heat as the tournament draws near. The East Coast side ended their 89-year wait after edging Negri Sembilan 2-1 in the Malaysia Cup final last year. "The pressure is on us naturally. Many would want to see us win again this year," said Norshahrul. "The team look good for now but there are other teams capable of winning the title… Selangor, Terengganu and Negri Sembilan look solid." Norshahrul has recovered from his hamstring injury and was fielded in the friendly match against Kuala Lumpur last Sunday. He could renew his partnership with Azamuddin Akil upfront. Azamuddin and R. beef up the squad. "I've played alongside Azamuddin before during our days with MyTeam (in 2008). It's not an issue and I guess we'll get along pretty well." He admitted his stamina and endurance had taken a dip due to the injury and the fasting month. "The fasting month has affected my performance a little. But it's no excuse. I'm recovering well from my injury too and I should be fully fit before the tournament begins." Kelantan are still in the Klang Valley for two more friendly matches. They play Selangor at the Shah Alam Stadium tonight followed by a match against Police at Selayang Stadium tomorrow before heading back to Kota Baru.

Li needs more matches to prepare for US Open

FRENCH OPEN champion Li Na moved smoothly into the third round of the ATP and WTA hardcourt US Open tune-up this morning with a straight-set victory over Lucie Safarova. Li, whose triumph at Roland Garros made her China's first Grand Slam tennis champion, defeated the Czech 6-3, 6-4 to become the first woman to reach the third round. It was Li's first match win since her second-round exit at Wimbledon, and followed her opening match defeat in Toronto last week. "I needed some matches for the hard-court," said Li, who reached the Australian Open final in January. "It's always tough, but I was happy I could win the match today," added Li, the fifth seed. "Because I missed a lot, I think I need some matches for me to find the timing on the court." All of the top eight seeds, led on the women's side by Caroline Wozniacki and on the men's by Novak Djokovic, have first-round byes. Men's third-seed Roger Federer was slated for a second-round clash with Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro. Del Potro, who upset Federer in five sets in the 2009 US Open final, is climbing back up the rankings after missing much of last year with a wrist injury that required surgery. After losing six straight to Federer, del Potro has won their last two encounters. "If I have a good day, maybe

I can make a surprise," said del Potro, who advanced when Andreas Seppi retired from their first-round match. "Not many players can beat Federer. I've already beaten him twice, so I know how to play him. But it's Roger. WHAT WENT WRONG? Williams reacts after losing a point but wins first round tie — AFP photo

Williams continues with commanding win FORMER world No 1 Serena Williams continued her impressive return to form with a convincing victory over Czech Lucie Hradecka in the first round of the Cincinnati Open this morning. Wi l l i a m s , f re s h f rom clinching the Toronto Cup on Monday, is looking for her third tournament win since coming back from an 11-month injury lay-off in June. The American will next face the woman she beat in Monday's final — Australian Samantha Stosur — in the second round. Te n t h - s e e d e d S t o s u r brushed aside Eleni Daniilidou of Greece 6-3, 6-1 in her opening match. Williams looked in good form in the first set as she pounded her serve against the

49th-ranked Hradecka, who came into this week on a sixmatch losing streak. However the American, who was 5-2 up in the second, struggled to finish off her opponent and showed some signs of tiredness before sealing victory in the tie-break. Earlier, Jelena Jankovic of Serbia, seeded 13th, advanced to the second round with a 6-0, 6-3 romp over Czech Iveta Benesova, but barely got to the court on time. Her car ran out of gas on the way to the match. "Luckily, the gas station was, like, two minutes walk. Tere were some players passing through and looking at us in the middle of the road like, 'What is she doing up there?' Pretty funny. It's not how you begin the day, but how you end it," said Jankovic — Agencies

LYON: FOOTBALL/ CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

B A Y E R N MUNICH will be taking their first step towards what they hope will be a dream run to a Champions League final next May when they host Swiss side FC Zurich in the playoff round first-leg clash tomorrow (2.45am). Having finished third in last season's Bundesliga, Bayern are in the qualifying rounds for the first time since 2002 and face a Zurich team who have only made the group stages once before.

Bayern will be able to call on Dutch winger Arjen Robben who sat out Saturday's German league win at Wolfsburg because of back problems. "He has been training well for three days," Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes said this morning. It means Heynckes is likely to use French winger Franck Ribery alongside Robben to give Bayern a much-needed boost in attack, but the Bavarian giants are not taking Zurich lightly. "An incredible amount rests on these two games in terms of both finance and image," said Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. "Ever yone here wants to reach the Champions League's group phase." Lyon come from behind to seize initiative A JIMMY BRIAND header 19 minutes from time completed a rousing fightback from Lyon as the French club beat Rubin Kazan 3-1 in the first-leg of their Champions League playoff. Vladimir Dyadyun had stunned the Stade de Gerland as he handed the Russian visitors a third-minute lead, but Bafetimbi Gomis led the Lyon response by scoring one and creating another to give Remi Garde's side the lead before Briand sealed the win in a refreshingly open contest. Lyon are bidding to reach the group stages of Europe's elite club competition for the 12th consecutive season, but Garde's men came into this tie on the back of a frustrating draw against unfancied Ajaccio in Ligue 1 on Saturday. Meanwhile, Rubin made the long trip from Tatarstan with two-thirds of their domestic season already completed. They lie fourth in the Russian Premier League and they looked well-placed to return to the Champions League group stage for a third straight season when Dyadyun turned in Bebras Natcho's right-wing

corner. From Lyon's point of view, the goal might have been avoided had Hugo Lloris deployed a defender on his far post. But they never panicked and were

back level with ten minutes on the clock. Gomis got in between two Rubin defenders to apply an excellent first-time finish to a Michel Bastos cross, and

Briand might then have put the hosts in front with a lob that 'keeper Sergei Ryzhikov did well to save. However, they were not to be denied for long, with Kim Kallstrom and Lisandro Lopez combining to set up Gomis five minutes before half-time, his cross-cum-shot from the left taking a decisive touch off Saba Kvirkvelia on its way into the net. Rubin were set up in a cautious-looking 5-4-1 formation, but the chances continued to flow after the restart, as Ryzhikov almost let a Bastos cross past him before Gokdeniz Karadeniz saw his powerful shot turned over the bar by Lloris. Former Rennes striker Briand then glanced home a Kallstrom corner to give Lyon a vital two-goal cushion, and while Bastos somehow failed to convert a Gomis pass with the goal gaping late on, Garde can be delighted with his side's powers of recovery. With the second-leg to come in Russia next week, the tie is still far from over, but Lyon are firmly in the driving seat. — AFP

Forlan's Inter-esting offer ATLETICO MADRID striker Diego Forlan says he has received an offer from Inter Milan and will be delighted to move to the Italian giants. Inter are in the market for a new hitman because of the expected departure of Samuel Eto'o to big spending Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala and they evidently consider the Uruguay international to be the perfect replacement. "I have received an offer from the Nerazzurri. It would be like a dream come true to move to Milan and play for Inter," Forlan told La Gazzetta dello Sport. Forlan went on to say that Inter face stiff competition though as he is also been in touch with Galatasaray. "The only Turkish team that have contacted me are Galatasaray. They're a great club. There's not much difference between Turkey and the rest of Europe financially. Turkey is a great country and it would be nice to play there some day," he said. Forlan's contract with Atletico is until 2013. Meanwhile, Atletico presi-

dent Enrique Cerezo did not hide his happiness in hearing Porto star striker Radamel Falcao stating his wish to move to Vicente Calderon. The Colombia international said on Sunday that a transfer to Atletico would be "a great opportunity" for him to further his career as he wishes to test himself in a bigger league. Cerezo confirmed last week that Falcao is a strong possibility to reinforce Atletico's attack, a department which is lacking numbers following Sergio "Kun" Aguero's transfer to Manchester City. And though the Atletico supremo confessed he enjoyed listening to Falcao's plea for a move to Vicente Calderon, he stressed that negotiations with Porto have not yet taken place. "We are pleased that the player said he wants to play at Atletico, but the priority now is the Europa League match against Vitoria Guimaraes this week," he told Radio Renascenca. The prolific striker, who is contracted to Porto until 2015, has a €45 million buyout clause.

Arsenal close in on Hazard

ARSENAL are stepping up their quest to find a replacement for Cesc Fabregas by moving in for Lille playmaker Eden Hazard, 20. The Gunners have long been linked with the tricky winger, and now reports from France suggest the Ligue 1 side are bracing themselves for an opening offer from Arsene Wenger. He would command a transfer fee of roughly £27m, and with superb technique, and a footballing brain, the Belgium international fits the mould of an Arsenal signing. With the Gunners armed with a pile of cash from Fabregas' sale, Wenger may well be forced into breaking his transfer record to land one of his long term targets.

De Bruyne's Chelsea link

GENK midfielder Kevin de Bruyne hopes he can secure a move to Chelsea by the end of the month after claiming negotiations have begun over a possible transfer to Stamford Bridge. De Bruyne caught the eye of a number of Europe's top clubs last season by putting in a series of impressive performances to help Genk lift the Belgian title. The 20-year-old is seeking a move from his homeland and would be happy to move to Chelsea although he does admit he would also be open to the idea of returning to Genk on loan for a season as part of the deal. "My manager went to Chelsea on Wednesday and discussions have been good," De Bruyne, who is currently sidelined with a calf injury, told Belgian TV show Extra Time.

FA: Gervinho ban stays

ARSENAL striker Gervinho will serve his three-match ban for violent conduct after the Football Association dismissed his appeal yesterday following his red card in Saturday's Premier League game at Newcastle United. The 24-year-old Ivory Coast forward was sent-off in the second-half of the goalless draw at St James' Park for striking Magpies midfielder Joey Barton following what the home side claimed was a dive in the penalty area. The Gunners lodged a claim that the standard three-game ban was "clearly excessive", but an FA regulatory commission heard the case and ruled that the punishment should stand.

Costa Rica international Ruiz shows pedigree

FC TWENTE star winger Bryan Ruiz hopes his goal in the Eredivisie last weekend was enough to encourage interest from Tottenham. The Costa Rica international claimed earlier this month that Spurs are chasing his signature, while Arsenal and Fulham are also thought to be interested. According to reports in Holland, Spurs manager Harry Redknapp was due to watch the forward in action during last Saturday's encounter with AZ Alkmaar but cancelled his trip to Enschede at the last minute when he learned that Ruiz would start the clash on the bench. It is thought Redknapp instead attended this morning's Champions League play-off match between FC Twente and Benfica to take a look at Ruiz. The 25-year-old came on just after half-time for the Dutch giants on Saturday and scored a superb 66th-minute goal to seal their 2-0 victory over AZ. And Ruiz, who has already

made it clear he is keen on an English move, hopes that goal has boosted his appeal. " I hop e my go a l h a s removed any doubt from the minds of Spurs and any other clubs," he told Voetbal International. "The reluctance of clubs (to sign me) cannot be to do with my technical skills. I showed what I can do last season with Twente. My physical condition is not a concern. I am fit." Meanwhile, Daily Mirror reported Redknapp is under orders to make his next signing a striker. Chairman Daniel Levy wants Redknapp to use the club's available cash on a striker, then do some selling before bringing in other players he is chasing. Levy is running the White Hart Lane side's transfer activity with a tighter rein than ever this summer. He plans to begin their dealings by completing a swoop for Manchester City’s misfit striker Emmanuel Adebayor, who is expected at White Hart Lane once the

clubs agree on how to pay his massive wages. Although it will be a loan deal, the arrangement will probably cost Spurs around £5m (RM24.5m) for a season. Levy is also willing to take Joey Bar ton on a free, however Redknapp’s interest in the controversial Newcastle midfielder has c o ol e d d r a matically. Redknapp prefers Scott Parker, but Levy won’t let him close a £7m deal for the West Ham sk ipper. RUIZ: Keen on English move

Arsenal agree Eboue sale NORTH LONDON club Arsenal announced they have agreed a fee with Galatasaray for Emmanuel Eboue, ending the defender's six-year stint with the Gunners.

EBOUE: Leaving Arsenal after six years

The Turkish club have revealed Eboue will join them for £3.1m (RM15.2m) on a £2.2m (RM10.7m) fouryear contract. "His transfer to Galatasaray is still subject to the completion of formal legal agreements and registration processes," said a statement on Arsenal's official website. " Eve r yon e at A r s e n a l thanks Manu for his contribution towards the club and wishes him the best of luck for the future." The 28-year-old joined Arsenal in 2005 and made 214 appearances in all competitions during his time under Arsene Wenger. Eboue becomes the latest player to depart the Emirates this summer following Cesc Fabregas’ big-money switch to Barcelona. Meanwhile, Blackburn Rovers are keen to sign Raul from Schalke but the

Bundesliga club say they want to keep the former Spain striker. "We do not want to let go of Raul," Schalke manager Horst Heldt told the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung yesterday while confirming Blackburn's interest. Talks are now planned with R aul to determine his future before the team leave for Friday's Europa League qualifying tie at HJK Helsinki. "I want a quick decision before we leave for Finland," said Heldt. ABDUCTORS of Chelsea player John Obi Mikel's father have made contact with the family. Michael Obi has been missing since he left work last Friday afternoon in the Nigerian city of Jos. On Monday, Chelsea midfielder Mikel gave an emotional interview in which he pleaded for his father's safe return after his management team issued a statement confirming the abduction. Former Lyn Oslo player Mikel was clearly upset when he gave an interview to Sky Sports in which he said: "Please just let him go. He's an old man, he hasn't done any harm to anyone as far as I know and I don't know why he has been taken. "This is a time where I need the country to help me. Whoever has got my dad, whoever knows where my dad is, please contact me and hopefully he can be released." But yesterday, the family received two calls from the abductors, who first warned them that Obi Sr had been taken out of Jos. " T h e y c a l l e d mu m my (Mikel’s mother) and told her that we should not bother looking for daddy in Jos because he has been taken to Lagos," a family source informed KickOffNigeria. com. A few hours later a second call came in, giving the family the location of the car which Obi Sr was driving when he went missing. Tony Obi, the eldest of the Obi children, confirmed to KickOffNigeria.com that the car was found in Jos, but declined to say where. "Yes, we have found the car. I can't say anything more for now."

Instant menace ... now Kun wants to thrill fans with more goals for City

Blues sniff out Meireles CHELSEA boss Andre VillasBoas is lining up a £12m (RM58.8m) bid for Raul Meireles (pic) as he seeks to beef up the squad at Stamford Bridge. Villas-Boas, who knows Meireles from his time at Porto, is desperate to add a creative midfielder to his squad and has now put the 28-year-old alongside Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric as his top targets. He has not ruled out bringing both players to Chelsea as he regards the Portuguese international as a perfect foil for Modric's creativity. Meireles was voted the PFA Fans Player-ofthe-Year for his superb debut season but isn’t in Kenny Dalglish’s plans, with an influx of midfielders pushing him down the pecking order at Anfield.

THE TIMES

Eboue moves amidst mix-up EMMANUEL EBOUE has sealed his move from Arsenal to Galatasaray despite an embarrassing mix-up at the airport. The Ivory Coast utility player flew to Turkey to put the finishing touches to the deal, at the same time that officials from Galatasaray were arriving in London to do the same.

CALGARY HERALD

Owen's Canada return ALTHOUGH the Major League Soccer transfer window is closed, the Vancouver Whitecaps are still open to player moves this season. While the first-placed LA Galaxy made the big splash by signing Ireland captain Robbie Keane from Tottenham Hotspur, the lastplaced Whitecaps remain in the hunt for Calgary native Owen Hargreaves. The former Manchester United midfielder is out of contract, so the transfer deadline doesn’t apply. The more important date is Sept 15, when MLS rosters are frozen. "We’re still active, but it will need to be the right player and the right circumstances," said Whitecaps president Bobby Lenarduzzi. "I don’t want to say that nothing is going to happen."

ARGENTINA international striker Sergio "Kun" Aguero captured the hearts of Manchester City fans in his very first outing as they bashed Swansea 4-0 at Etihad Stadium on Monday. City's £38m (RM186.2m) record signing made a dramatic debut, as he came off the bench to score twice and set up another goal to have fans going gaga over the 23-year-old. The second goal by Aguero, wearing the No 16 shirt, was amazing when he fired in from distance. City fans have been enchanted by the exploits of fellow countryman Carlos Tevez all this while. And now there is Aguero, who is set to thrill them as City gun for honours in the new season. Aguero is determined to build on his exploits against Swansea and vowed to "keep doing what I do best". He had been kept waiting for his City bow throughout last week's Community Shield against Manchester United, and a further 60 minutes on Monday, but he quickly made up for lost time. "I am happy. The start was really good and I want to keep like this. It was nice," Aguero told City TV. "I had a chance to play a little bit and I enjoyed it. I helped the team and I want to keep doing the same in the future." Aguero had been held back by manager Roberto Mancini as a precaution due to a lack

of match fitness. The former Atletico Madrid star began pre-season late after representing his country at the Copa America until the middle of last month. "He knows how I am and it was okay for me to play 30-35 minutes," said Aguero. On the good reception from the fans, he said: "The only way for me to thank them is on the pitch and keep doing what I do best." Aguero is set to be a cult figure to the City fans if he continues his goalscoring act as well as provide openings for teammates to find the net. A jubilant Mancini described Aguero as a "photocopy" of Brazilian legend Romario. "He is a photocopy of Romario, they are the same player," said the Italian. Barcelona wizard Lionel Messi had said on Sunday he was convinced Aguero would

be a big success at City. "I have no doubt that he will be successful at City," said Messi. "Aguero will give them a real cutting edge. He's unique — he has immense power, strength and an incredible work ethic. He will certainly stand out in terms of what he will bring to City. "Defenders will find him so difficult to play against. There is no doubt in my mind that City have signed a very exceptional player." Messi also believes his countryman and friend will have no problems adapting to life in the Premier League. "He's flexible and can play in a number of positions. Adapting to the pace of the Premier League won’t be a problem," said Messi, who first played alongside Aguero when Argentina won the Fifa U-20 World Cup in Holland in 2005.

WHY 'KUN'?

AGUERO is popularly known as "Kun". He got the nickname as a boy growing up in Quilmes, Argentina, when his grandparents spotted his resemblance to one of the young Aguero's favourite TV characters, a Japanese anime character called "Kum Kum". "Kum Kum" was the star of an early classic series from the legendary Sunrise Inc. studios and was a "naughty prehistoric boy". He was also known as "Kum Kum The Menace". As Aguero told BBC in an interview in 2008, he was responsible for changing the name to the shorter and snappier "Kun". "Kun actually represents a Japanese cartoon character from my favourite series that I used to watch as a child. I coined the nickname Kun because of my resemblance to the character, who was actually named "Kum Kum". My grandparents were the first ones who gave me the name. I think my nickname is different in comparison to most athletes, and so I have grown to appreciate it because it's unique. It's not everyday an athlete is nicknamed after a cartoon character!"

Ever-ready Smalling to the fore VERSATILE Chris Smalling is well-prepared to solve Manchester United’s defensive crisis. The Red Devils are facing huge problems after just one Premier League game, following injuries to a trio of their first-choice defenders. Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand both hobbled off at West Brom last Sunday, while Rafael is out for 10 weeks with a dislocated shoulder. Leftback Patrice Evra was already battling a knee problem. Vidic damaged his calf and could be sidelined for three weeks, while Ferdinand has torn his hamstring and will be out for six weeks. Manager Alex Ferguson

will now turn to Smalling and newcomer Phil Jones, 19, to plug the gaping holes left in his back four. Fo r m e r Fu l h a m s t a r Smalling, 21, reckons both he and Jones can step up to the plate and take their chances. "It’s unfortunate to see your big players go down injured," Smalling told Daily Star. "But the manager has shown all pre-season he’s willing to give the young players a go and he’s thrown them in to big games. So it’s great to see them step up. Everyone's really gelling and with Jonny Evans and people coming in like Fabio, it’s great to see.

"If you do well, the manager will keep you in the team. It's a big marker to the other players and the rest of the squad that, if you play well, it doesn't matter how old you are. If you’ve got that ability, the manager is going to put you in. "Phil and I have played in pre-season, swapping centreback and rightback as the manager wants us to show we can play in those two different positions when people are injured. "I'd rather play centreback as it’s my main position — it’s where I will aim to play many of my games this season. But the manager feels I can help in there, if and when I'm needed."

Tale of four horses

Walcott winner barely enough to lift Arsenal gloom ARSENAL began life after Cesc Fabregas in unconvincing fashion as Theo Walcott’s goal secured a fortunate 1-0 win over Udinese in the Champions League playoff round first-leg at the Emirates Stadium this morning. Just 24 hours after Fabregas finally completed his longawaited move to Barcelona, Arsene Wenger’s team began their attempt to qualify for the group stages of Europe’s elite club competition with a patchy display that hardly bodes well for their prospects without the Spaniard. Although Walcott’s firsthalf goal at least gave Arsenal a slender advantage to protect in the second-leg in Italy on Aug 24, the Gunners will have to improve to avoid an embarrassing early exit. Fabregas’ ability to retain possession and launch attacks was sorely missed and Arsenal needed a large dose of luck to hold onto their lead as Udinese carved open their shaky defence time and again. With Wenger absent from the post-match Press conference due to his touchline ban, it was left to Aaron Ramsey to discuss Arsenal’s performance. “Cesc was a great player for the club but now he’s gone. We dug in and gave absolutely everything tonight,” Ramsey said. “The most important thing is the clean sheet. We believe we’re capable of going over

there to win.” Udinese coach Francesco Guidolin added: “We didn’t take the chances we had, but it is still an open match and we have a chance of qualifying in the next match.” After six years without a trophy, it is no longer just a restless minority of the club’s supporters who doubt Wenger, as emphasised by the rows of empty seats and gloomy atmosphere. In the circumstances, spending a season in the Europa League is an extremely unpalatable thought for Wenger. Robin van Persie, newly installed as captain, was banned after his red card in Barcelona last season, while Jack Wilshere and Samir Nasri were also missing through injury and suspension. Despite the lengthy list of absentees, Arsenal made a dream start as Walcott opened the scoring in the fourth minute. Bacary Sagna flicked a pass down the right wing to Ramsey and he curled over a cross towards Walcott, who had timed his run perfectly to volley past Samir Handanovic from close range. Walcott got himself in hot water earlier this week with some candid revelations about the hardline reign of England coach Fabio Capello, so his goal was well timed with the Italian watching from the stands. bled Arsenal’s lead moments later, but the Ivory Coast forward got in a tangle with teammate Laurent Koscielny with the goal at his mercy. Inevitably, Arsenal’s back four remains a cause for concern and Udinese, gifted a free-kick by some panicky defending, nearly equalised when Di Natale’s attempt deceived Wojciech Szczesny and struck the crossbar. Udinese are yet to start their Serie A campaign, yet they were still sharp enough to knock Arsenal out of their stride. It took a last ditch tackle

from Thomas Vermaelen to halt another incisive Udinese attack and Wenger’s side lived even more dangerously when Pablo Armero surged through a gaping hole in the Gunners’ defence, only to shoot straight at Szczesny. Walcott and Gervinho continued to offer moments of menace, but Di Natale was a constant threat and the veteran striker looked set to equalise early in the second-half when he ran onto Armero’s pass. He was just about to pull the trigger when substitute Johan Djourou, on in place of

the injured Kieran Gibbs, slid across to block his path. When Djourou limped off soon after, Wenger might have feared it was going to be one of those days. His team were giving the ball away with uncharacteristic regularity and Armero almost took advantage when the midfielder drove just over from 25 yards. Di Natale’s free-kick was well saved by Szczesny in the closing stages and even when Walcott had a clear sight of goal, his shot was brilliantly tipped away by Handanovic. — AFP

Barca, United get financial boost

BARCELONA and Manchester United earned over €50m (RM214.6m) each after reaching the Champions League final last season, European football’s governing body Uefa said this morning. Last season’s 32 Champions League teams received a total

of €754.1m from a combination of performance-related payments and the television pool. United were the biggest earners, with €53.20m comprising more than €27m for their performances and another €25.9m from the televi-

sion pool, Uefa said. Despite winning the final 3-1, Barcelona’s earnings were slightly less at €51m, as their performance-related payments were €30.7m but they collected only €20.3m from television. Uefa said other top earn-

ers were Chelsea (€44.52m), Schalke (€39.75m), Real Madrid (€39.28m), Inter Milan (€37.98m), Bayern Munich (€32.56m) and Tottenham Hotspur (€31.13m). Uefa added that money from the centralised television pool was distributed accord-

ing to the value of the teams in their own national market. All clubs were entitled to a minimum €7.2m from the group stage. Further performance bonuses and participation fees were awarded in each of the knockout stages. — Reuters
