Najib’s pledge on Penang KUALA LUMPUR
Umno won’t lead if BN recaptures State in coming polls
UMNO will not assume leadership in Penang if Barisan Nasional wrests back the State from the Opposition in the upcoming general election. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak gave his word to Gerakan that Umno would not claim the leadership role should the scenario arise, and pledged to work with other BN component parties to reclaim the State. “Umno will never claim the State leadership in Penang. We are prepared to work together with component parties in Penang,” the BN chairman and Umno president told delegates at Gerakan’s 40th National Delegates Conference at Menara PGRM yesterday. “Gerakan, MCA, MIC and Umno must work together as one family. We must be part of the solution, not part of the problem. We must do that. If we work together, I am not going to give up on Penang.” He said BN had their work cut out for them in recapturing Penang but it was not an impossible task. “Some say there is no hope (for the BN) in Penang. No. We must work hard, prove to them that we are the better choice compared to the Opposition. This is about democracy; this is about choice. “We must give the people a choice. We
Umno will never claim the State leadership in Penang. We are prepared to work together with component parties in Penang — Datuk Seri Najib Razak must show them we are the better choice for them in Penang and for the people of Malaysia.” Najib said the matter had already been discussed with Penang Umno Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Zainal Abidin Osman. However, he did not confirm as to whether Gerakan would lead the State should BN win, reasoning that he had to discuss the matter first with other BN component parties. “BN will come up with our position later
on. But it will not be an Umno candidate,” he said. Penang is now administered by the DAPPKR-PAS pact which won the State in the general election in 2008. Najib’s fighting words came even as the Gerakan leadership was facing a stiff test of its leadership. Party president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, following criticism of his leadership by Wanita Gerakan chief Datuk Tan Lian Hoe, yesterday offered to sacrifice himself for the good of the party (see page 2). This isn’t the first time that Koh’s leadership had come into question. Last year, his predecessor, Tun Dr Lim Keng Yaik, quit his post as party adviser citing dissatisfaction with Koh’s performance. Asked about Wanita Gerakan’s call for Koh not to contest in the next general election, Najib said he would leave it to Koh to decide. “We have been discussing what needs to be done. I leave it in his good hands. He knows what needs to be done,” he said. Gerakan had controlled Penang for 39 years and lost the State to the Opposition in the 2008 general election. The party did not secure any seats in the polls while Umno won 11 out of the 40 State assembly seats.

Dr M: Lecturer disrespectful in disputing Sultan's stand
FORMER prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said Prof Dr Abdul Aziz Bari was being disrespectful when he declined to apologise and withdraw his statement disputing the Sultan of Selangor's stand on the check
conducted by the State Islamic Religious Department (Jais) on premises belonging to the Damansara Utama Methodist Church on Aug 3. The statement by the law lecturer of the International Islamic University of Malaysia
(IIUM) was contrar y to Eastern moral values, he said when commenting on the remarks by Abdul Aziz carried by a news portal that the Sultan's action of intervening in the Jais-church issue was unusual and inconsistent.
Dr Mahathir, who is the chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP), spoke to reporters after the 11th convocation of UTP here yesterday. He said he would not know whether the statement went
contrary to the law but, in terms of moral values, it was disrespectful. Earlier, Dr Mahathir presented the Chancellor's Gold Award to Lai Chin Leong, 23, who graduated with a bachelor's degree in civil
engineering with honours by garnering a cumulative grade point average of 3.89. Muhammad Aiman Ja m a lu d i n , 2 2 , a n d T. Kuhanesapathy, 23, won the silver and bronze awards, respectively.

Free legal aid on hold 1,300 lawyers ready, waiting for green light from A-G and police
THE move to provide free legal aid for Malaysians in criminal cases is on hold as the National Legal Aid Foundation is unable to meet the previously intended Oct 1 launch date because of complications with the Attorney-General's Chambers and the police. Foundation president Ragunath Kesavan (pic) told The Malay Mail the A-G's Chambers and the police had been pre-occupied with the restructuring of the Internal Security Act 1960 (ISA) and Emergency Ordinance 1969 (EO) that was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak on the eve of Malaysia Day.

"On our part, we have laid the groundwork and 1,300 lawyers throughout the country have already undergone training and briefings on the protocol in providing free legal service to the public," said Ragunath. "We are waiting for the green light from the two agencies in order to proceed, if possible by November." Asked if 1,300 lawyers were sufficient, he said: "What we have now is more than enough. We will rope in more lawyers depend-
ing on the number of cases we receive." On Aug 15, the foundation announced that those earning less than RM25,000 a year will receive free legal aid. However, those earning between RM25,000 and RM36,000 will need to make a token payment of RM300. Ragunath, who represented Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail at a Press conference at the time, had said the free legal aid was expected to start nationwide on Oct 1. He had also said every Malaysian arrested and remanded would be given immediate legal representa-

GERAKAN president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon is willing to sacrifice himself for the good of the party in facing the next general election. However, he said, details of the announcement would be made at an appropriate time. Dropping the remarks in his winding-up speech at Gerakan's 40th national delegates conference here yesterday, Koh said he would not disclose more about what he would do as there were a few things that needed to be resolved before the announcement could be made. Do your part, councils told
Local authorities can help curb gambling in cybercafes, say cops ALMOST half the cybercafes in the country have illegal gambling activities and local authorities must do their part to curb the menace, say police. Federal Criminal Investigation Department principal assistant director (anti-vice, gambling and prostitution) SAC Abdul Jalil Hassan said the problem could be tackled more effectively if local councils conduct

follow-up action on premises that have been raided before. “We estimate 40 to 45 per cent of cybercafes have illegal gambling. The problem is after these outlets are raided, they re-apply for licences using different names. Most of the time, they don't bother changing the location of their premises,” said Abdul Jalil.
"It therefore makes sense for local councils to run checks on the "new" applicant to see if the person has any relation or dealings with the previous operator. If there is a connection, then approval should not be given. If this simple process is practised, we would see less repeat offenders.” He also said some cybercafe operators tend to take advantage once their business licence has been approved.
“For example, out of 15 computer terminals at an outlet, from two to five computers will be used for illegal gambling by their customers. "That's why, despite constant raids by police, the illegal gambling activities at cybercafes recur." He also said co-operation from Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) is vital to disconnecting electricity supply to such premises.
EQUIPMENT SEIZED: Computers taken away from a cybercafe after being raided for illegal gambling activities
Police and State support vital for combating illegal activities WHILE the police feel the local authorities can do more to combat illegal gambling activities at cybercafes, local councils say the backing of police and the State government is vital. This is what The Malay Mail gathered from five local authorities in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur, in the wake of news reports Langkawi police have urged the island's local council to shut down all cybercafes found to have allowed gambling activities at their premises. The councils admitted gambling at cybercafes is rampant, with weekly raids turning up at least one errant outlet each time. Here are their views:
By Ikram Ismail and Cecilia Victor mmnews@mmail.com.my
● Petaling Jaya City Council deputy president Puasa Md Taib said illegal cybercafes and such activities at outlets is a perennial problem. "Up to Sept 30, the council conducted 320 raids on cybercafes, of which 134 were unlicensed and of those, 79 were closed down due to operators violating conditions such as conducting illegal gambling and operating past designated business hours," he said. Puasa said 32 raids were jointly carried out with the police and the National AntiDrug Agency.
"Our enforcement officers conduct spot-checks every day, and up to September we have seized computers and other goods from 179 premises and issued 215 compound notices. "We are taking serious action to destroy such illegal activities at cybercafes and the support of the police is vital." ● Kajang Municipal Council president Datuk Hasan Nawawi Abdul Rahman said their approach is similar to Langkawi. "We get cybercafe operators to pledge they promise not to allow illegal gambling within their

a high plot ratio of 4.9 but under the Kuala Lumpur Draft Plan 2020, the area's plot ratio is pegged at 2. "Most of us chose to live here because it is a relatively quiet and peaceful area with public amenities," he said. "We fear the high-rise project will exacerbate traffic congestion and affect our privacy." Abdul Aziz said the association had sent protest letters to KL Mayor Tan Sri Ahmad Fuad Ismail, Federal Territories and Urban Wellb e i ng D e put y Mi n i ste r Datuk M. Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in August. "In April this year, KL City Hall issued a directive to the developer to scale down their development to 12-storeys for the two blocks, with a reduced plot radio of 3, but this still contravenes the KL Draft Plan 2020." Association treasurer Ravi Markandu said the existing commercial outlet sufficiently served the needs of the neighbourhood without imposing problems on residents. "There's a supermarket, hairdressing salon, florist, pub and mamak restaurant," he said. "We are not against development but this project's scale is too much to bear."
business premises," he said. "If an operator fails, we immediately revoke the licence and shut down their operations." Hasan also said that in conducting their raids, they get verification from the police on the outlet's illegal activities. "The verification is necessary under the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953," he said, adding that under 2007 by-laws enacted under the Local Government Act 1976, an offending operator can be fined up to a maximum of only RM1,000. "We have frozen licences since 2008 and have since revoked licences of over 50 operators. We conduct joint operations with the police from time to time."
● Subang Jaya Municipal C ouncil president Datuk Asmawi Kasbi said they cannot stamp out illegal cybercafes without police and State government support. "Like most local councils in Selangor, we are governed by State policy and can act only in accordance with the council by-laws," he said. "We also act on tip-offs and practically every week our enforcement officers uncover illegal cybercafes or illegal gambling at such outlets." Asmawi also said gambling cases come under the jurisdiction of the police. "We are unable to close down an illegal outlet without police
involvement," he said. ● Ampang Jaya Municipal C ouncil president Datuk Mohammad Yaakob said there are 53 licensed cybercafes in the municipality. "So far this year, we have not received any verification from the police that any of these 53 outlets allow illegal gambling at their premises," he said. "We welcome tip-offs on illegal cybercafes and illegal activities at licensed cybercafes and will take action against such offenders." ● KL Mayor Tan Sri Ahmad Fuad Ismail assured they take action against any cybercafe involved in any wrongdoing, including gambling activities.

'Council manipulating Act' THE Ampang Jaya Municipal Council "manipulated" the Town and Country Planning Act 1976 by its refusal to hold a public hearing on the Ken City development project at Taman Nirwana in Ampang, say residents. Taman Nirwana Phase Two Residents' Association chairman Mohamad Suhaimi Ismail said yesterday the council should not take into account the width of the 12m road reserve which had been the basis for the council's stand for not holding a public hearing on the high-rise project. "The road reserve is part of the development that would be surrendered to the council that is only supposed to take into account the width of the existing road which is 20m," he said after 100 residents staged a protest at
Jalan Nirwana 2, near Kompleks Muhibah Ampang Jaya. "The council is trying to manipulate the law for its own benefit." Last Friday, The Malay Mail reported that while the Act stipulated a public hearing must be called for a development to occur within 20m from houses, the council had said the 1ha site was located 32m away from homes. The council's measurement included the 20m width of Jalan Nirwana 38, as well as the 12m road reserve between Jalan Nirwana 38 and the development site. Residents from five surrounding housing areas have objected to the project, developed by Sri Seltra Sdn Bhd, as they fear the project would lead to flooding and exacerbation of
traffic congestion. Suhaimi said: "The commercial and residential project should not be constructed on the land, because according to the terms in the original land grant, the land should be used for a shopping complex. "But the council informed us the Hulu Langat Land Office agreed with the development." "Also, the development would utilise Jalan Nirwana 38 as an entry and exit point which is already congested by daily traffic heading to the Middle Ring Road II, the Duke highway and Ampang Point." He said the association would be delivering a memorandum against the development to Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.

Reach out and help them Call the cops if you know of violence and abuse victims, public told
By CECILIA VICTOR cecilia@mmail.com.my
IF you know someone who is being abused in your community, be it a family member, neighbour or friend, you should step in and help. Women's Aid Organisation (WAO) chairman Ivy Josiah said the non-profit organisation handled about 1,500 distress calls from violence and abuse victims nationwide last year. But the number could be a lot more. "The victims can't always help themselves and most of them choose to keep quiet about it. Thus, we are unable to hear their pleas and offer help," she said. Josiah said it was crucial to educate the public on this matter. "Public education is important. When one encounters another being abused, one can make a difference by picking up the phone and calling the police." She said a victim must first lodge a police report before WAO could intervene. "Without a police report, it would be difficult for us to come and provide the necessary assistance."

'Some feel it's all right to be beaten'
FOR A GOOD CAUSE: TV hosts and radio personalities lend their hand in a car wash to help raise funds for WAO to carry out its activities
Josiah said WAO provided shelter, counselling and support to victims through their refuge centre, child care centre (CCC) and the WAO Centre. Since last year, 125 women and 100 children had been taking shelter at the refuge centre, and 18 children had been permanent residents of the CCC. The CCC is a centre for the children of WAO's ex-residents who have decided to live independently. The children are given a home, education
at local schools and a support system to meet their physical, mental and emotional needs. To create public awareness on supporting abuse victims to come forward and lodge reports or attend counselling, the organisation yesterday launched a "You Can Make A Difference Now!" campaign. The campaign aims to generate awareness through public service announcements on radio and television. Also through the campaign, WAO hopes to raise another
RM300,000 by the end of the year to add to the RM700,000 it has raised so far this year. "The campaign's ultimate goal is to 'convert' the public into advocates, followed by a call of action to donate," said WAO president Mok Chuang Lian at the event. "Violence against women has been going on for many years and it can happen to anyone, anywhere. The public needs to know how they can help and make a difference," she said.
SOME women feel it is all right to be abused by men. This was the astonishing comment made by Tamil radio THR Raaga's DJ Anantha. He said he has received calls from women on his show saying it is perfectly normal to be "slightly abused" by their husbands or boyfriends "as females are supposed to submit to them". Anantha, a Women's Aid Organisation (WAO) ambassador who has broadcast talks and announcements on violence against women, said it was time to change this perception. "I was shocked upon receiving such calls. Tamil movies might have an influence on the matter," he opined. "We often see how Tamil movies depict women's roles. Too many times we encounter scenes where women are beaten or treated as inferiors." Anantha said talks on women's aid saw the station getting some 10 calls daily from women affected by violence.
WAO ambassador Marina Mahathir said awareness of women's rights in the country was still lacking. She hoped Parliament would soon pass the long-awaited Sexual Harassment Act to provide better protection to women. "WAO, along with the All Women's Action Society Malaysia, is demanding and lobbying for the Act to be passed in Parliament,'' she said. Another WAO ambassador, writer and TV personality Asha Gill, said parents played a vital role to prevent future abuse cases. "Fathers, in particular, must be actively involved to ensure their young sons are instilled with good values on the treatment of women," she said. Along with Mix FM radio host Serena C, the radio and TV personalities joined WAO supporters in washing two cars belonging to Malakoff Corporation Berhad. The company donated RM2,000 to help fund WAO's activities.
Women better shooters, says instructor
WHEN it comes to pistolshooting as a recreational sport, women are apparently more accurate than men. "Women are more disciplined in following instructions while men tend to pay less attention," said Kevin Lee (pic), 36, the manager and handgun-shooting instructor at the City Square Shooting Gallery in Jalan Segambut here. "And when the time comes for target practice, we have found that women are mu c h m ore accurate at shooting semi-automatic handguns than men." While being interviewed by The Malay Mail at the gallery on the ninth floor of Menara TKSS, Lee and three of his staff coached a batch of 34 employees of a Shah Alam-based company which

wanted them to enjoy this as a recreational sport. The group, who were mostly novices to the sport, were taught on the proper handling and use of a handgun, including loading and unloading, grip, positioning and applying "gunsight". Among the women, who formed a third of the group, was Irdawati Mohd Nor, 37, who was not a first-timer in the sport, unlike most of her colleagues. "I tried handgun shooting last year at the Cheras police station when it was open to the public," she said. "I liked doing that but this time, I am getting lessons and I hope to shoot more accu-

rately than my colleagues as there's a prize to be won." One of Irdawati's colleagues, Paul Yeo, 36, admitted that he was a little apprehensive at first when told by their company about the pistol-shooting session. "Having been briefed on how to handle a hangun, I am eager to be a sharpshooter," he said.
Lee said the "students" were coached for two to three hours before they got the opportunity to pull the trigger. "We assist them all the way, including during the shooting process," he said. "However, if we judge a 'student' as not conducive to this sport, we do not allow him or her to shoot."
The students have to wear hearing and eye aid for protection. Lee said each student is charged RM150 to RM200 and this includes rental of a semi-automatic handgun and 50 rounds of ammunition. "The basic safety rules are to treat an unloaded gun as a loaded gun and never point the muzzle of a gun at
anything except the target," he said. Cit y S qu are Sho ot ing Gallery was established in 2004 by Securigold CMS Sdn Bhd as the first indoor shooting gallery in Kuala Lumpur (originally at Plaza Yow Chuan before moving to Menara TKSS last year). It has about 120 members. "Those who want to join must submit photostat copies of their MyKad and will have to wait two weeks for verification with the police department," said Lee. Those with criminal records are banned. "Some of our members are licensed to carry firearms and they bring their own handguns for their shooting sessions here." We also seized their motorcycles,” said City traffic police enforcement unit chief ASP Azmi Wahid. He said the boys, who are schoolmates, told police they were buying food, claiming their parents had allowed them to ride the motorcycles.

The boys need to realise what they have done is dangerous and they not only risk their lives, but those of other road users as well.” In the three-hour operation between 5pm and 7pm, five motorcycles were seized and 40 summonses issued to 35 motorcyclists for riding without licences, not renewing their road tax and making illegal modifications to their machines. finish line. The event brought Putrajaya’s night scene to life in front of the Palace of Justice, which served as the starting point. Education Deputy Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah flagged off the race at 8pm. Along the way, marathoners were also entertained and cheered on by DJs playing upbeat songs, cheerleaders, a 84-piece band stationed along the route and a group of people clad in superhero costumes. “It has always been about the runners. the finish line means so much to me,” Twenty First Century Sports director director Nithiaseelan Vegayathunam told The Malay Mail. Apart from the usual marathoners, the event also saw
runners taking part in the race for a cause. They were participants of Make That Change, a web-based online reality show where runners run for their friends or relatives in need of financial aid.
The marathon had four distances and 16 different categories for participants aged 18 and above, with the mainstay being the full 42km marathon run, followed by a half-marathon of 21km, and
lighter marathons covering distances of 10km and 5km. The winners of the main category were awarded RM6,000 each, while the half-marathon winners were awarded RM1,000. The event was supported by the Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Ministry, Youth and Sports Ministry, Putrajaya Corporation, Federal Territory Amateur Athletic Association and Malaysian Amateur Athletics Union. This year’s Putrajaya Night Marathon was also supported by BSN (title sponsor), Putrajaya Corporation (venue host), NTV7, The Malay Mail (official media), and other partners.

FUN RUNNERS: Freeman (back row, second from right) with fellow Australian Royal Navy personnel taking part in the marathon
THE Putrajaya Night Marathon 2011 witnessed plenty of runners from all walks of life, yet one profound runner was Oliver Ker. The 70-year-old Sabahan, sporting a white beard and a smile, caught everyone’s attention for taking part in the event’s mainstay 42km marathon and determinedly completed it after six hours. He was one of countless runners who did not participate for the prize money nor to win but for the experience of running Malaysia’s one and only night marathon. For them, completing the run itself is satisfying enough but for Ker, it was all about
making friends. “When you complete the race, it is an achievement in itself. It is not about winning but the satisfaction I get out of running. At the same time, I can make a lot of friends when I run. In this world, you need friends,” he said. The appeal of the night run was also enough to persuade a group of Australian Royal Navy personnel to join the 5km fun run. “We wanted to do the full marathon but time ran out by
the time we found out about the event, so we did the fun run instead,” said Candice Freeman (pic), 28, the leading seaman physical trainer for the group of eight sailors from HMAS Sirius, who had docked at Port Klang on Wednesday. Asked about the run itself, Candice said t h e hu m i d it y meant that it was tougher than she had expected but found it an experience worth revisiting in the future. “If we have a chance, we will
definitely do it again. It was a very well-organised race and the track was good as well,” she said. For 21km marathon winner Shaharudin Hashim, he represented the typical hardcore marathoner. Competing in his 50th marathon, the 36-year-old finished in one hour and sixteen minutes. “I could have gone for the full marathon but since I am running in the Penang Bridge Marathon next month, I decided to take part in the half marathon instead. This would allow my body to recover in time to stay fit for both marathons,” he said.

'Early' retirement surprise
Department refutes claim pensions counter closes for the weekend at lunch on Friday SANDRA ONG is outraged by what she claims to be the 'premature' closure of the Public Service Department's post-service division counter for pensioners at its Maju Junction Mall office in Kuala Lumpur on a Friday. "I took my 72-year-old mother there to process a claim about 11.45am on Oct 7," says the 28-year-old. ONG claims they were hurriedly served while a woman behind them was turned away despite joining the queue before noon, adding the staff told them the counter was closed for the day. "I found this highly irregular as I know they only close temporarily from 12.15pm to 2.45pm for Friday prayers. After that, they are supposed to resume their services until 5pm."
WHEN DARREN CHEE bought a unit at Abadi Indah Apartments in Taman Abadi Indah, Jalan Klang Lama, three years ago, he did not realise the previous owner did not terminate the telephony and Internet broadband services with Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM). The 38-year-old IT consultant wants to apply for UniFi but is having problems doing so as the former resident has moved overseas.
ONG says the operating hours are also stated in the department's website. "This is inconsiderate because there are many elderly people coming here regularly. "On top of that, there are no LRT services available here. What if a pensioner makes the effort to visit by himself, only to be refused by the staff? "They should be more responsible than this." SANDRA wants the department to clarify. ● THE Public Service Department's pensions division deputy director, Sadiah Abu Samah, refutes ONG's claims the Maju Junction Mall counter is not operational during normal working hours. "We understand she may have been frustrated by a
worker who may have misinformed her. "We have conducted an internal investigation and found services to all visitors have been friendly and in accordance with their needs." She says the counter was fully operational from 2.45pm to 5pm on Oct 7. "We also found the office did not close at exactly 12.15pm and service was still being rendered to customers even beyond that time. "Operations commenced after Friday prayers at 2.45pm to 5pm as usual." Sadiah says the staff 's activities are always monitored by their headquarters. Meanwhile, checks by the Hotline Roving Team at the Maju Junction Mall counter last Friday reveal
it reopened after 2.45pm, as normal, with customers claiming they are happy with its services. Says 19-year-old student Muhd Aiman Abdul Rashid of Putrajaya: "I came here on behalf of my 58-year-old mother to request a pensioner's statement in order to process a loan." He claims service is efficient and they are warmly received by the staff. Jennifer Yap, a 53-year-old human resource manager from Wangsa Melawati, who was there to submit a claim for her 81-year-old aunt, says she only waited five minutes before being served. "The process was also done quickly." She says she visits the BACK TO BUSINESS: The department reopens its door after the counter every month to sub- Friday prayers last week— Pic: Shahir Omar mit her aunt's claim.
Trapped by former owner's telco bills "Worse still, for two months, I was slapped with TM bills amounting to about RM400, which are not even mine." Hands tied, CHEE could only upgrade the account to UniFi but the telephone number remained the same. He says he requested TM to waive the July and August charges, which do belong to him, but claims he was given a blunt reply. "When I asked customer service to check on my apart-

ment unit's account, the representative said to me, 'The line is not even under your name, why do you bother?' "Although I have UniFi now, it still does not solve my problem." CHEE believes by raising the matter with TM, he can save himself a possible misunderstanding with the previous onwer if the latter returns to the country one day. "What if he suddenly comes back and realise I have been
using his account to enjoy my services?" He wants TM to clarify.
● A SPOKESMAN for Telekom Malaysia Berhad clarifies it did not terminate the account as it was under the name of the previous owner who did not apply to terminate or transfer the account when he sold off the property. "Our Terms of Service clearly indicate any applica-
tion for service termination must be submitted by the account owner." The spokesman says because the complainant has since upgraded the service to UniFi, TM has terminated both the initial telephony and broadband services as a gesture of goodwill. He says TM has also credited a rebate for the terminated account from the date the complainant started enjoying UniFi and the amount will
be reflected in the following month's bill. "We advise customers to apply for relocation or termination of their TM services when they move to avoid any future credit implications for any outstanding amount in the account or complications to new residents." When contacted, CHEE says TM has terminated the unused services and refunded him the two months' charges.

CCTV cameras should be installed by the airport authorities and for the airline's employees protection. It is a shame KLIA seems to hold the award for 'security' officials opening the suitcases and removing items
belonging to passengers, which amounts to a theft. The airline should be held accountable, irrespective of who handles the luggage, as the passenger's contract is with it. It is also recognised some amount of damage may take place in the course of travel, but excessive and unreasonable damage is not expected nor should be accepted by passengers. — EthnicMalaysian ● I AM surprised people would put their cameras in their check-in luggage. EUROPE SCUFFLES broke out after a few thousand people gathered in the financial district near St Paul's Cathedral in LONDON, raising banners saying: "Strike back!" "No cuts!" and "Goldman Sachs is the work of the devil!" Wikileaks founder Julian Assange joined the rally, telling protesters from the steps of St Paul's that he supported them "because the banking system in London is the recipient of corrupt money". Major protests also took place at European Union institutions in BRUSSELS and FRANKFURT, as well as in ATHENS, where painful budget cuts imposed by international lenders in return for a bailout have sparked widespread anger. In ROME, the march quickly degenerated into street battles between groups of hooded protesters and riot police that sent peaceful demonstrators fleeing with their hands in the air.

Students who carried banners stating "You have nothing to teach us!" and "Kremlin and pornography, out!" tried to prevent her entering the building and then heckled her speech. Match made in'wonderland'
By CHE'AZ cheaz@mmail.com.my who are fortunate enough to have sponsors rushing to do their bit as soon as wedding plans are announced although there
are some of us who are wondering why on earth these people even deserve it. Anyway, the wedding of Nabil, the winner of a reality programme called Raja Lawak season 2, and his newly wedded wife, Nazirah Ayub or Zira, as she is fondly known, was a perfect example of a beautiful and sweet reception that was moderately done. Nabil shared the cost of the event and according to him, it was about RM177,000. He also said that he held the wedding, not to bad the wedding of the year award or anything like that. To him, the most crucial thing was, to be married to his wife. The event was held at the peak of the glittering hill of Icity Shah Alam on Oct 2 and it was celebrated by thousands of fans, families anf friends who attended the soire that night. It was expected that a total of attendies would only reach 2,000 but since the reception was held in an open space, and there was no stopping people rushing in, the hill was swarmed with about 6,000 people filling up every nook and cranny of the open land. Nabil and Zira entered the reception area on a yellow Vespa, accompanied by an entourage of about 60 motorbikes. The theme of the wedding was "wonderland" and it sure felt like one since the event was hosted by Didie Alias, Amyza Adnan and Jep Sepah (one of the comedian groups in Raja Lawak season 3). All of them, except for Amyza, dressed up according to the theme and it was those two wearing their colourful patched eccentric costumes who helped complete the imagination of the "wonderland". The effort shored up by the three comic hosts also hyped the crowd in the family-oriented wed-

There were, however, certain times when they tended to forget where they were and held mock quarrels among themselves on stage. They also, on occassion, made unnecessary "underwear" jokes followed by some harsh language which contributed to some awkwardness. But considering the rest of their routine were perfect, the rough spots were easily overlooked. To complete the event, Black and Jaclyn Victor or Jac, were invited to perform some of their best songs for the bride and groom. Jac, did not only entertain the audience, she was also the bridesmaid that night. Meanwhile, Nabil who was found after the cake-cutting ceremony said he was overwhelmed to see the massive turn-out and the efforts they took just to make the wedding a "happening" event. Actually, Nabil was a bit shocked seeing the huge crowd and worried about the comfort of his guests. Later, he was relieved and thankful when those who did not have a chance to sit or eat, waited until the event was over before coming over to congratulate while telling him not worry. "I am so grateful to such understanding friends and guests who did not make any fuss about their comfort level. Instead of just leaving, they waited until the end just to

give their best wishes to me and my wife personally. Honestly, although there might be flaws in my wedding tonight, I could not be thankful enough to those who came and made this a night to cherish." The reception also brought VIP guests from Serembang, most of whom were orphans and disabled children. About 40 of them were personally invited by Nabil to celebrate the most important night of his life. Zira, who said she never dreamed of such a wedding, looked stunning in her white
richly-embellished wedding gown created by Wazira. "This is going to be the most memorable highlight in my life. For a bride to be celebrated in such warmness and together ness with such genuine people who were really happy for me, the moment was amazing and truly priceless," she said. It was a double celebration of sorts for Nabil as it was his 28th birthday bash too. The evening ended with a "bang" as colourful fireworks shot from the bottom of the hill completed Nabil and Zira's perfect "wonderland" wedding.

WEDDINGS have evolved and trends have changed. Couples who get married these days tend to think they need to meet people's expectations by throwing lavish affairs. But there are those who think weddings should be fun, simple, honest events that should not be pretentious just because of a desire to attract attention. Of course, there is no harm being exorbitant on a so-called once-in-a-lifetime occasion but do we really need to go over board to achieve happiness? Well, let's not argue about those

Up-in-arms over screen screamers
Hear, Say

WHAT’S the fuss surrounding local horror flicks? The scare factor is what pulls audiences to fill seats in cinemas. Unfortunately, many, including former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, have been vocal about how it encourages belief in superstition and that it doesn’t contribute to community productivity. Seriously? And we thought
people were free to be scared out of their wits if they liked. The local horror take hardly keeps anyone up at night anyway, what with the stringent enforcement of the National Censorship Board. What really turns the stomach was talk that there was consideration to stop production of local horror flicks altogether. Films, apparently, have to be deemed to contain intellectual content suitable for
as horror are really thrillers, comedy or other mixed genres and this leads to an inflated figure when one wants to count the number of screen screamers released. Perhaps the authorities should point out the need to up production quality instead of fussing over trends that keep the business alive.

Tittle-tattle Gambit THE baton has been passed. Comedienne Didie Alias was caught in a spat with TV personality Azwan Ali, before sharpening her claws with actess Julia Ziegler. And now it seems fresh off that, Julia has begun a catfight with TV host Sharifah Sakinah. Except this time, she pulled it off by confronting the latter’s sister Sharifah Shahirah, an actress and radio presenter. The word is, the whole situation revolves around controversial Gambit Saifullah who apparently, had repeatedly asked Sakinah about Julia and when Sakinah shared her views, Gambit supposedly

Julia in turn, was said to have taken offence and confronted Shahirah, after Sakinah refused to entertain her calls — though why, we’ll never figure out as none of the names above claim to be in any sort of relationship despite an air of jealousy hanging over all of this. The two ladies have apparently “made up”, but we’re just amused at how this resembles the worst plot in a bad made-for-TV drama.

nation-building to justify their existence. After all, many films of various other genres hardly make the grade in terms of quality. If horror movies have to be scrutinized, then so should mindless slapstick since they encourage moronic behaviour. The classification of horror too, is loosely-based. Some films categorised
REMEMBER Uncle Seekers? The TV soothsaying “expert”? The man behind the name, Syed Abdullah Syed Hussein Al-Attas has crossed paths with too many people including royalty and politicians. In his latest “outing”, Syed Abdullah embarked on a series of ”revelations” based on various “dreams” he has had on political and entertainment figures. According to his blog,
the self-proclaimed “seer” predicted two major disasters and a big issue to take place before Nov15. Local entertainment celebrities have responded with little nice to say about the man who is best known for his antics. Suffice to say that they view his prophecies as just another name-dropping attention-seeking exercise. We think he craves the spotlight. Give the man a TV show already.
WE know RTM is extremely strict when it comes to songs aired. The national broadcaster vets the contents, the choice of language used and also all those minute technical aspects. Still, if what we hear is true, then it’s seriously bordering on the ridiculous. Rock group Bunkface, who were enjoying hearing their latest hit Panik?! on radio is said to have fallen victim to overzealous regulations — simply for including the word
reformasi. While there are political connotations with the usage of the word, perhaps the song should be viewed more positively as it is about change. Heaven knows the music industry needs a change and not everything has to be related with politics. What’s next? Banning songs for having the word bersih?

Pitbull will be performing at Sunway Lagoon on Dec 1, his second visit here after last May. Meanwhile, Singapore gets Madonna — as rumours on the Internet have it over the past week, though we have indicated that there were promoters in the republic who were chasing a date. Tentatively, the Singapore date has been set for April 29, next year while Bangkok has been lined up for May 1. The only other country in this region listed for possible stopovers as part of the tour is the Philippines. What? No Kuala Lumpur date? Oh well… at least we get superstar DJ Paul Van Dyk later this week.

THERE have been complaints about the blandness of local dramas and at times, this is true as the stories follow predictable patterns. Producers sometimes seem to forget that apart from the obvious pull of star power, strong plots play a very big role in driving the stories. This can be said for Hong Kong dramas, Taiwanese idol serials or any of Singapore's grand productions. The stories are always basic and simplistic. If there are genres that have become successful, it would be one of those modern dramas comprising themes and issues that are relatable to the community. That is exactly what a new series, Justice In The City, is trying to achieve.

Principal Tam to conquer the world again
SET TO MAKE WAVES: (Top from left) Aaron, Erra and Fizz and Umi (bottom left)
Storms of yesterday’ urge on stage Shaarani said Singapore has extended its interest through Ace Planet Singapore for a staging there. He said this was only the second local effort to be invited to the republic, after its performance here between Nov 11 and 20. Badai Semalam boasts some of the biggest stage and film names and they include Erra Fazira, Aaron Aziz, Umi Aida, Ziela Jalil, Fizz Fairuz, Emelda Rosmila and Iqbal Taufik. Some productions may win on hype, but it appears Badai Semalam might be one of the few that may be acknowledged for its content.
AS one of the movers and shakers in developing the Hong Kong cantopop scene, Alan Tam Wing-lun has earned himself the nickname, "Principal Tam." And he has come a long way. When he first broke into the music scene, he was a young student who made waves in the 70s with his cantopop band, The Wynners. It was a simple group comprising close friends. Then Kenny Bee joined in 1973. Five years later, the group parted ways. Tam and Bee,

being the two who were more successful in the transition, became successful singers and actors in their own right. "These days, I have been focusing on music on and off as I would be into acting as well," Tam said at his pre-concert Press conference in Kuala Lumpur. "It has been 20 years since I appeared on the silverscreen. It wasn't until recently that I started to turn to acting again. To me, finding a really good script that I could relate to is what I look for before saying 'yes'," he said. Tam said his philosophy is, either he ignores something or gives it 100 per cent of his effort when it comes to work. Tam's attempt at acting has not been easy. He only began to be taken seriously as an actor in 1981, when he won the Best Actor award at the prestigious Golden Horse Awards for his role in If I Were For Real. On whether he would be interested to have an autobiography about himself, Tam exclaimed: "That should be interesting! But then, as I said, I have to consider the script first before plunging myself into the project." To promote his show in in Malaysia next month, Tam took a trip to Kuantan and had a meetthe-fans session at Berjaya Megamall. It was a way to get in touch with
his loyal fans, some of whom have been following his career since they were teens. "I'd never been to Kuantan, though I've heard so much about the place. The locals there were great people and the seafood was great too." In July last year, Tam's concert at the Hong Kong Coliseum recorded a massive success and chalked recordbreaking ticket sales. All eight shows were sold-out and received rave reviews from the Hong Kong media who touted it as "one of the most worth-watched concerts of the year." The same is expected for his upcoming concert in Malaysia. "I want to give the fans what they want. I will be singing favourite hits from the yesteryears of 80s to the 90s. Of course there will be other songs as well from different eras which I plan to include," Among Tam's timeless hits are Love in Autumn, Illusion, Flower in Water and Don't Say Goodbye. Tam will be thrilling local fans during Alan Tam Concert Live in Malaysia 2011, which will be held at the Putra Indoor Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Nov 19 at 8pm. — By

TICKETS to the concert are priced at RM600 (VVIP), RM450 (VIP), RM350 (PS1), RM290 (PS2), RM230 (PS3), RM170 (PS4) and RM120 (PS5). For further information, call Star Planet at 03-9223 3667 or visit www. starplanet.com.my
SPREADING THE WORD: 'Soloist' Lee (left) and Joo
A growing tidal wave WHEN it comes to "religious" music, Christian Contemporary Music (CCM) may not be a popular genre. But in South Korea, contemporary Christian music groups are all-out to make themselves heard. Among this group is 3rd Wave, which has been making quite a ripple, gathering popularity across the market. While their real fans are mainly devout and religious individuals, the group also has a following from secular music lovers fans as well. This bodes well for 3rd Wave as their vision is simple: to take their music seriously and share their passion. "One of our goals is to inspire people and to do something important that gives back to the society through our work. We want to get our message across and share the same passion with all of our fans," the group's founder, Pastor Johnny Lee said. Fronting the band is 30-yearold, Brian Joo, who was previously one of the original members of the South Korean R&B duo, Fly to the Sky. Joo was here in Malaysia recently on tour with the group. This is his second visit. "The first time I came, I wanted to send out a message to people to come and get to know me. And now, I just want people to know what I'm doing and be able to share my music," he said. Also accompanying him is
former U-Kiss band member, Alexander Lee who is now flying solo. While Joo is currently working on a new album, Lee is still strategising his plans for his next move as an active solo star by the end of the year. The 23-year-old singer nervously said that doing things on his own is something he had never prepared for. "It is God's plan that I become a solo artist. This is a really good opportunity to serve God and be able to do this with Brian. I am happy to be in Malaysia and I'm also extremely elated to be given the opportunity to do CCM," Lee said. On their future collaborations, Joo hopes to work with the talents and spread their love for music together. Joo had previously worked with many top artists including Kelly Clarkson and Jason Derulo. Meanwhile, Lee said he doesn't mind who his collaborator is as long as it is in Cantonese or Mandarin. "I think it is easier to pronounce than Korean," he mused, before breaking into a Cantonese song. Last weekend, 3rd Wave performed as the I WIll Be There Music Rally at the Wisma FGA, Full Gospel Assembly, Kuala Lumpur. The event, which was divided into two sessions was organised by Star Park. — Pix and story by

ew local drama finds justice

The drama is about two young civil suit lawyers, Qiu Jianzhi (Shaun Chen) and Zhuo Huiqi (Chris Tong), who are trying their best to serve the people with their judicial knowledge. While they strive to meet their common aim, Huiqi seems to be more ambitious and has set a rather high standard of living. Though they are both from different backgrounds, the two lawyers often have to deal with one another, especially in between court cases. As this is a local Chinese drama, it is naturally shot in Mandarin. All cases and arguments are also therefore in that language. The lead actress Chris Tong said Justice in the City is one the
most hectic jobs she has ever been involved in. "Filming has been going on non-stop since Oct 5. I have not had that much time to myself to rest or sleep earlier than 5am every day," Tong said. Still, the 29-year-old actress has high hopes for the project. "I've worked with the director before so I'm happy to be back again. I hope to spark a different chemistry altogether," she added. Another from the cast, beauty queen turned singer Soo Wincci has her bit to share too. "My first scene was an emotional roller-coaster. In Justice in the City, my character is always abused by my "husband," played by Zheng Wen Wei.To make the abuse scenes more
realistic, I told Zheng to hit me for real. As a result, I got all these blue black marks all over my arms now," she said, proudly showing off her "trophies." While the "injuries" are certain to garner the viewers' attention, procucer Yeo Saik Pin said safety was very important for his team. "It does not show that one is a better actor than the other, even if you have all kinds of injuries resulting from your acting. I want everyone to come together as a team to make this drama a success." Lead actor Chen said that he is more excited now that he gets the chance to come back to Malaysia to act in this locally-made production. "All I can say for now, is that, expect the unexpected. Expect
SERVING JUSTICE: The cast of the local production including Soo (second from left) exciting developments from the beginning of the drama till the end. This also marks my transition from handling bad guy roles to a good guy role," he said. Justice in the City, will be shown on ntv7. It promises to make an impact on those who watch it. While hardcore fans
will have no problem linking the local production to those from Hong Kong like Ghetto Justice and The Other Truth, Justice in the City's Yeo insisted that his version would do a better job in capturing fans' heart. "Well, being compared is nothing new anymore. It's some-
thing that is expected all along. My point is, as long as everyone (cast and crew) comes together as a team to make the drama work, that would be more important. Besides, we have different audiences here with different objectives," Yeo said. — By

Faeez's faith
Captain counting on youth to help team bounce back By VIJHAY VICK vijhayvick@mmail.com.my
UNIKL captain Muhammad Noor Faeez Ibrahim believes the university side can only grow stronger after the team were eliminated from the TNB Cup. UniKL were knocked out of the quarterfinals by Maybank despite winning the second-leg 4-3. Damage had already been done when Maybank won the first-leg 5-0. "We are young and have come through the ranks together. We will take lessons from this year and concentrate on future challenges," said Faeez. He is one of the 10 Project 2013 players under K. Dharmaraj plying their trade with the university side. Starting his career at UniKL in 2009, he was snapped up by KL Hockey Club (KLHC) last year, only to return after failing to establish himself there. However, Faeez is not downhearted by the move back to UniKL and believes it is a blessing in disguise. "It was my decision to come back. I wanted more playing time. There are more opportunities for me to play here and get more exposure. "I was not ready to fight for a place at KLHC as I had much more to learn," he added. Faeez feels right at home at UniKL, not only from his previous stint with them but also because it allows him to develop his game among peers his age. The 20-year-old also skippers the Project 2013 squad and is looking for-

ward to the Junior World Cup qualifiers next year in Malacca. "We are being groomed for this (Junior World Cup) and having the qualifiers on home turf will be an advantage to us," said Faeez. The Project 2013 squad will compete in the Sultan of Johor Cup next month. The defender is targeting the final but admits it will not be easy with an international field comprising the likes of Australia, New Zealand and South Korea.

Chong Wei stamps support for campaign
WORLD and national No 1 Lee Chong Wei is happy to do his part in promoting the sport to the less fortunate children under the "Hope for Change" campaign. Under the programme, Michael's Badminton Academy (MBA) took 20 children to watch the National Grand Prix Finals at Juara Stadium in Bukit Jalil. While they have done similar activities before, this time there was something different. MBA, after talks with the BA of Malaysia, had set up a session for the kids with Chong Wei. The Penangite took pictures with the children as well as signing autographs. "It's a good idea to bring the children here. They can see the top players in the country play badminton live instead of only watching on television," said Chong Wei. "I'm sure they are happy to be here and have the chance to meet the players. Hopefully, this will give them encouragement and motivation to continue training hard to achieve success."

The charity programme, initiated by MBA and IOI Properties, is a 10-month badminton training workshop. It is customised to provide deprived children a platform to pick up the sport in the hope future stars will emerge. "Hope for Change" has around 50 children from orphanages House of Joy, Rumah Attaqwa and Rumah Shalom
under the programme. MBA also took the children to a carnival organised in conjunction with the International Hope for Children Day in May and sent them for a leadership seminar by Leaderonomics. Redberry and The Malay Mail are among the media partners for the campaign.

Ruthless All Blacks
KLFA to 'adopt' school fields
Wallabies choked by high-spirited hosts NEW ZEALAND captain Richie McCaw called for a repeat of his side's performance after they teed up with France next Sunday in impressive fashion. The All Blacks will return to Eden Park to take on Les Blues after a comprehensive 20-6 win over Australia yesterday. "It was awesome, we had to front up and be on the job for 80 minutes. Every single man did their bit, and that's what you've got to do in knockout rugby," said McCaw. "We've got the job to do next week, but I'm pleased with how the guys fronted up. The intensity of the ball carriers and at the breakdown was the key." New Zealand also dominated the scrum. "One to five have been around a long time, that's been building and it was a pretty good performance tonight (yesterday), but we need it next week," said McCaw. The star flanker has been nursing a foot injury throughout the tournament. "I'll rest up again and be good to go next week, I'm sure." Wing Cory Jane was named ''Man-of-the-Match'' after facing up to an aerial buffeting which left him bloodied after a blow to the nose. On the barrage of high kicks, he told ITV1: "It's my job to catch them, I would have been in trouble if I had dropped them.

watch us go: McCaw (centre) vies with Wallabies scrumhalf Will Genia (left) during the 2011 Rugby World Cup semifinal match yesterday — AFP photo
"My beak took a bit of a battering, it was a hell of a Test match but it's good to get past the semifinal and look forward to a good week and the final." Jane was joined by Israel Dagg — whose strong run created the only try for centre Ma'a Nonu — and Richard Kahui in a fine display from the All Blacks' backline. Australia captain James
Horwill was gracious in defeat. "Credit to the All Blacks. They outplayed us and deserved to win. The All Blacks are a great side. When you miss tackles like we did, we hung in there very well but they ticked the scoreboard over in the second-half," said Horwill. New Zealand dominated vast tracts of the match and
continued to chip away and increase the lead, but only scored the one first-half try. They increased the lead by just six points in the secondhalf in which they were sternly tested by the Wallabies. After Piri Weepu put the All Blacks ahead 17-6 in the 42nd minute, Australia produced a prolonged period of attack, recycling the ball and trying to find a chink in the New Zealand defence, before finally coughing the ball up. The play was fast and furious with the Wallabies enjoying plenty of territorial advantage, but making too many mistakes. Weepu, the hero of New Zealand's quarterfinal win over Argentina last week, was replaced by Andy Ellis in the 57th minute and looked ill on the sideline. His time there lasted just 12 minutes because Ellis had his face bloodied by a front-on tackle and had to leave the field. And it was Weepu who had the final say, kicking a 35 metre penalty in the 72nd minute.
THE Kuala Lumpur Football Association (KLFA) are in talks with the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Sports Ministry to ''adopt'' and manage school pitches to tackle the lack of playing fields in the city. KLFA president Datuk Astaman Abdul Aziz said the association would like to see school fields laid with artificial turf that require minimal maintenance. “I’ve conveyed this to MoE’s director general Datuk Abdul Ghafar Mahmud and he said as long as there is no change of land title, no cost passed to the ministry, the school security remains in check, and the priority of usage is given to the schools, then the ministry is willing to be part of the project,” said Astaman. He said this was in line with the 2012 Budget announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak recently over a RM50 million allocation to build football fields with artificial turf at 30 selected locations nationwide. Schools are within residential areas and this would allow the masses to use the fields after school hours and during weekends. KLFA have earmarked three schools within Kampung Pandan — SMK Cochrane Perkasa,
By Haresh Deol haresh@mmail.com
SMK St Gabriel and SMK Aminuddin Baki — to kickstart the project. Astaman said companies could chip in as part of their corporate social responsibility. "If we manage to get enough funds, we could also build basic floodlights and schools can rent out the fields and earn a certain percentage from the rent. “An artificial field including drainage works will cost about RM1.5 million and will last for 10 years. This will benefit companies as a branding and advertising exercise for a long time. However, Astaman was quick to caution such work must only be done by reliable contractors ''at the right price and with the right intentions''. KL has been robbed of playing spaces in the name of development. Among the notable fields which were once graced by some of our legends, including the late Mokhtar Dahari, Datuk Santokh Singh and Datuk Soh Chin Aun, were in Brickfields, Jalan Ipoh, Bandar Baru Sentul and the KL Sports Excellence Centre along Jalan Cochrane. Some schools like SMK Maxwell, SMK Bandar Baru Sentul, SRK Jalan Kuantan (1) do not even have football fields.

France boss Lievremont blasts players as incorrigible bunch FRANCE head coach Marc Lievremont (pic) expressed fears his team could repeat the mistakes that cost them the Rugby World Cup 12 years ago when players over-celebrated a semifinal win. The controversial Lievremont again criticised some of his players yesterday for going out on the town after their semifinal 9-8 win over 14-man Wales on Saturday. Lievremont drew comparisons to his own experience from 1999, although he believes on this occasion
it will not affect France's chances of winning the Webb Ellis Cup. He played in the last four victory over New Zealand 12 years ago and in the subsequent 35-12 defeat by Australia in the final. "We are not world champions yet and we just qualified for the final. This reminds me of 1999 when there were four days of celebration after the semifinal." Lievremont told his players they were "selfish and disobedient" but later added "a cigarette, dessert
or couple of drinks" would not interfere with their performances in the final. He went to bed in a good mood after the semifinal triumph at Eden Park but that changed when he was told about his players' actions. "I asked them not to go out and I learned a little later some of them did. We spoke about it this morning (yesterday) and I told them what I thought of them," he said. "They were selfish, disobedient and that for four years they have been on

my case. But at the end of the day it won't stand in the way of the fact that we are in the final. France will take on New Zealand in the final — a repeat of the final in 1987 when New Zealand won 29-9. Meanwhile, Lievremont admitted he had watched a rerun of the match against Wales and that he was particularly impressed by how his defence stood their ground late in the contest. He was also convinced the decision to sendoff Wales captain Sam
Warburton in the 17th minute by referee Alain Rolland for a dangerous tackle was correct. "I thought the sending-off was totally justified and it is not my fault if other people do not agree," said Lievremont. Warburton received a three-week suspension yesterday after admitting committing a ''dangerous tip tackle'' contrary to Law 10(4) (j). He has 48 hours in which to appeal from the time he was informed of the decision.

McCarthy blasts Scharner after T-shirt row

Moyes watching Genk's Ogunjimi
The Malay Mail Monday 17 OCTOBER, 2011
WOLVES manager Mick McCarthy slammed West Brom midfielder Paul Scharner for taunting his players during the Baggies' 2-0 victory at the Hawthorns yesterday. McCarthy claimed his players were upset because Scharner had lifted his team shirt to show off a T-shirt
emblazoned with the club logo in the closing stages of a fiercely contested Black Country derby. Wolves substitute Stephen Hunt appeared to be angered by Scharner's actions and was involved in an exchange with the Austrian. McCarthy backed his play-
ers and said: "Scharner had something on his T-shirt and showed it to the lads over the other side of the pitch. "There is no need for it and maybe that upset the lads. You can lose but you don't need your nose rubbing in it. "If there were words said between the players, it would
have been because of that. He lifted up his shirt, there is no need for it. "Take the mickey with the ball, that's the game." But Scharner is adamant his actions were not meant to anger the Wolves players. "My kids gave me the T-shirt. They stuck a club
logo on it and I was just showing it to the fans. That's all," he said. Wolves have now lost five games in a row as goals from Chris Brunt and Peter Odemwingie secured Albion's first top-flight win over their hated neighbours since 1982. — AFP

EVERTON boss David Moyes (pic) is looking at Belgium striker Marvin Ogunjimi and is keen on the 24-year-old as he puts together a shortlist of potential attacking targets. Moyes watched the Genk hitman in action for his country against Germany last week. Supremo Bill Kenwright has given Moyes a pledge that there will be cash for a forward — with insiders revealing Moyes had the funds at the end of the last deadline. Ogunjimi, who has scored five times in seven games for Belgium, would cost around £3 million from Racing Genk, who could be forced to sell.
Spurs offer Pav, cash for Doumbia TOTTENHAM are ready to use Roman Pavlyuchenko as bait to snare CSKA Moscow striker Seydou Doumbia. The 23-year-old is wanted by several Premier League clubs but Spurs believe they can tempt CSKA by throwing Russian striker Pavlyuchenko into the deal. Doumbia has been a prolific scorer at Swiss club Young Boys and now CSKA, with his club slapping a £30 million price tag on the Ivory Coast star. But Spurs believe they can get that price down, especially with a swap for Pavlyuchenko, who remains a regular starter for Russia despite his lack of games.

Milan say no to City's bad boys CARLOS TEVEZ and Mario Balotelli will not be leaving Manchester City for AC Milan during the January transfer window, according to the Serie A club's vicepresident Adriano Galliani. The Rossoneri have been linked with Tevez as well as Balotelli, who is said to be keen to join his boyhood heroes. Galliani has now made it clear he is not interested in landing them in the new year. "We could take advantage of the January transfer window to reinforce the midfield. The attack does not need any adjustments, so Carlos Tevez will not arrive," he told Sky Italia.
Suarez storm 'El Pistolero' hits back at Evra's racism allegations
LIVERPOOL striker Luis Su are z has hit b ack at Patrice Evra's allegations that he racially abused the Manchester United star during Saturday's 1-1 draw at Anfield. T h e E ng l i s h Fo ot b a l l Association have pledged to investigate Evra's claims in the French media that Suarez directed racist insults at him throughout the match. Referee Andre Marriner was seen talking to both players after a clash during a second-half corner and France leftback Evra was later booked for dissent. The official has included Evra's allegations in his official match report, but Uruguay international Suarez maintains his innocence. Writing on his Facebook page, Suarez said: "I'm upset by the acusations (sic) of racism. I can only say that I have always respected and respect everybody. We are all the same. "I go to the field with the maximum illusion of a little child who enjoys what he does, not to create conflicts." Evra was determined to draw attention to Suarez's alleged comments and he told French T V channel Canal Plus: "I was very upset. In 2011 you can't say things

I won't make a huge deal out of it, but it's very upsetting and disappointing." Suarez, who joined Liverpool from Dutch club Ajax for £22 million (RM109m) in January, is no
stranger to controversy. He earned global condemnation at last year's World Cup by handling a goalbound effort by Ghana in the final moments of the quarterfinal, then celebrating when the resulting penalty was missed and Uruguay went through on a penalty shootout. He has also been subjected to accusations of diving but Liverpool were keen to defend their player immediately after Evra made his
racism claims. A Liverpool spokesman said: "The first we knew about these allegations was 20 minutes after the final whistle when the manager (Kenny Dalglish) was asked to go into the referee's office and told about them. "The first thing we did, as you would expect, is ask the player and he has categorically denied using any language of that nature." The FA are determined
to get to the bottom of the matter. "The FA has been made aware of an incident that is alleged to have occurred during the Liverpool versus Manchester United fixture at Anfield," said a statement. "Referee Andre Marriner was made aware of the allegation at the end of the fixture and has subsequently reported this to the FA. The FA will now be making enquiries into the matter." — AFP
ROBIN VAN PERSIE (pic) lifted the gloom around Arsenal as the Dutch forward's double clinched a much needed 2-1 win over Sunderland at the Emirates Stadium yesterday. Van Persie insisted in the club's matchday programme that he has no intention of following Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri out of the Emirates and then underlined his commitment with a "Manof-the-Match" display capped by a brilliant winner with just
eight minutes left. Ars ene Wenger's side kicked-off just two points above the relegation zone after their worst start to a season for 58 years. But Arsenal will always be a threat while they have van Persie. And the Gunners captain showed his class with a cool finish after only 29 seconds. Sunderland gave the ball away from the kick-off and when Gervinho crossed low
into the penalty area, van Persie dummied Wes Brown before firing past Simon Mignolet to score the club's fastest ever Premier League goal and the quickest in the top-flight this season. Former Arsenal winger Sebastian Larsson equalised in sublime fashion as the Swede curled a brilliant shot beyond Wojciech Szczesny from 25 yards in the 31st minute. Szczesny then had to make a fine stop from Lee Cattermole's
close-range header to deny Sunderland a second goal. But van Persie saved his best until last as he stepped up to bend a superb free-kick over the Sunderland wall and into the top corner in the 82nd minute. That was enough to give Arsenal only their third win in eight league games and lift Wenger's men into 10th place, while struggling Sunderland are above the relegation zone on goal difference. — AFP

... and now Mancini wants more respect from Ferguson MANCHESTER CITY manager Roberto Mancini hopes his team's rise to the top of the Premier League table will have earned increased respect from Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson ahead of the massive derby at Old Trafford on Sunday. City's 4-1 d emolition of unbeaten Aston Villa at Eastlands on Saturday lifted them two points clear of United, who drew 1-1 at Liverpool earlier in the day. "Sir Alex has more experience than me and has a fantastic team and always respects every other side," said Mancini. "That's why they have won the Champions League and so many other trophies. But I hope we are earning extra respect now. We should be happy to go to Old Trafford at the top, but understand the championship will be long and can change every week. "We have played only eight games — there are another 30 to go."

Fairytale ending for birthday boy Stoner
CASEY STONER completed a memorable outing at Phillip Island yesterday by winning the Australian Grand Prix and sealing the 2011 MotoGP championship. On his 26th birthday and in front of his home fans, the Australian won for the fifth successive year at the Phillip Island track to earn his second world championship, adding to his title in 2007 for Ducati. With main rival and defending world champion Jorge Lorenzo unable to race after severing the top of his finger in the warm-up, Stoner just needed to finish in the top six to wrap up the crown. And from pole position, the Repsol Honda rider was never headed — opening up a commanding lead to win by 2.21 seconds from Honda Gresini's Marco Simoncelli, who edged out Stoner's teammate Andrea Dovizioso for second place. A delighted Stoner — the first rider to win a MotoGP title for Honda since Nicky Hayden five years ago — stood on top of his bike upon returning to pit lane to lap up the cheers from the parochial home crowd. "I don't think I could fit any

incent Kompany and James V Milner swept aside Villa. Stephen Warnock scored the consolation goal for the visitors. The depth, power and
expenditure of the City squad was highlighted by their substitutes' bench. The likes of Edin Dzeko, D avid Si lva, Alexandre Kolarov, Samir Nari and Kolo
Toure cost over £100 million (RM494m) to recruit. Yet, Mancini could rest them in the countdown to the mustwin clash against Villarreal. Sergio ''Kun'' Aguero, their £37m goal scoring hero, was allowed a few more days to recover from injury so was not even pressed into substitute action. "We had problems for the first 20 minutes because some players found it difficult after the internationals, but then we played well," said Mancini. "Mario scored a fantastic goal and it changed the game. He understands he has to work for the team and has worked and played well. But Mario can change in a moment! "We knew this week would be hard because we play Villa and Villarreal. After that, we have the derby. Our mind is busy. "But we have started the season well and now our focus should be on Villarreal. It is a key match for us."

Horner hails 'special spirit' within Red Bull's set-up RED BULL team principal Christian Horner paid tribute to his team after they secured a second consecutive constructors' world championship at the Korean GP yesterday. Sebastian Vettel's first place and Mark Webber's third means Red Bull now lead rivals McLaren by 140 points with three races remaining. "We have a special spirit unrivalled down the pit lane. The last two years has been a phenomenal period for us and I'm tremendously proud of all them," Horner told BBC Sport. "It never gets easier, that's for sure. It would be foolish to underestimate the likes of Ferrari. They are a phenomenal team with tremendous pedigree, the likes of McLaren, the likes of Mercedes. "We're not foolish or arrogant enough to think this kind of performance is normal. It's abnormal and it takes a superhuman effort to try and achieve. "Our competitors will be pushing hard over the winter

Horner admitted towards the end of the race he had been telling Vettel's race engineer Guillaume ''Rocky'' Rocquelin to slow his driver down to ensure there were no last minute mistakes. "We were trying to give him information that might slow him down, and then on the last lap he got fastest lap by about a second," said Horner.

Real painful decision for Mourinho to make REAL MADRID manager Jose Mourinho insisted having Gonzalo Higuain and Karim Benzema at his disposal is a problem he enjoys having, after seeing his men defeat Real Betis 4-1 at Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday. Higuain produced a ''Manof-the-Match'' performance by scoring three of the goals but with Benzema, now nursing a muscle complaint also in, Mourinho is having a dilemma. "It is difficult to leave a player out for five or six straight games," he told AS. "Benzema started the season well but not so for Higuain because he missed pre-season. But Higuain is back in form and it's lucky for the team to have the two. "Benzema was on the bench in case there were difficulties and had to come on," said Mourinho. "He could have played if the game remained at 0-0, but there was no reason to risk him as we had no problems with the score. I know many people will say from now until Wednesday or Saturday to have two strikers in good shape is a problem, but I think anything but that. The problem is to have only one or none," he said. Real are in second place after the win, and are a point behind champions Barcelona who beat Racing Santander 3-0 at Nou Camp on Saturday. Argentine Higuain was delighted with his display against Betis as this was his second consecutive hattrick for Real after previously scoring three goals against Espanyol on Oct 2. "I'm very happy. I hadn't played in one week, but I feel just like I did before then. The manager will decide if I must be a starter or not. I just play, which is what I must do," Higuain told Real's website. "These hattricks are good memories to cherish after retirement. It will also be nice to remember this because it will recall the injury I suffered beforehand and how rough it was on me. I feel better each time. I'm grateful to my teammates and the club because they always supported me during the time I was injured," he said.

SHOLA AMEOBI came off the bench to rescue Newcastle’s unbeaten record as the Magpies twice came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw against Tottenham at St James’ Park yesterday. Ameobi’s powerful angled drive with four minutes left ensured a share of the spoils for Alan Pardew’s side, who strengthened their grip on fourth place in the Premier League with another gutsy display. Tottenham took the lead through a hotly-disputed first-half penalty from Rafael van der Vaart. But Demba Ba equalised in the second-half and, although Jermain Defoe restored Spurs’ lead, it was Ameobi who had the final word. Newcastle enjoyed the territorial advantage, but had failed to create any meaningful chances when Tottenham took the lead five minutes before the interval. Emmanuel Adebayor tangled with Newcastle defender Steven Taylor in the area after midfielder Yohan Cabaye had lost possession, but the visitors’ penalty appeals

form — thanks to impressive work from Jonas Gutierrez. Newcastle’s Argentina midfielder surged down the left to leave Luka Modric and Kyle Walker trailing, before sending over an inch-perfect cross for Ba to tap in his fifth goal in three games. Adebayor almost immediately restored the visitors’ lead, firing across the face of goal and inches wide after good work from Modric. Gabriel Obertan flashed a low angled drive from 20-yards narrowly off target for the hosts, but it was a rare threat on goal from Pardew’s side. Krul then had to be alert to rush from his goal and hack clear as Defoe bore down on Scott Parker’s astute pass. It was a warning Newcastle failed to heed, as the same pair combined just four minutes after Defoe had entered the fray. Defoe, one of the most instinctive finishers in the Premier League, took a pass from his England colleague to turn and shoot into the bottom corner from the edge of the area in the 68th minute

That looked like earning all three points, but undaunted, Newcastle pressed forward in search of a late equaliser. It took a fine save from Friedel to deny Cheik Tiote’s 30-yard drive but the pressure finally told when Ameobi, 15 minutes after his introduc-
tion, beat the American keeper with a stunning low finish after fine work by Cabaye. There was still time for Krul to save from Defoe, while at the other end Fabricio Coloccini shot wide on the turn from close range in a breathless finish. — AFP

seemed to have been ignored by Lee Probert. However, after consultation with his assistant, the referee, who awarded four penalties against Tottenham last season, all at White Hart Lane, pointed to the spot, to howls of protest from the majority of fans in a 46,000 crowd. Van der Vaart ignored the protests, calmly sending Tim Krul the wrong way with a confident left-foot finish into the corner of the net for his fourth goal of the season. Republic of Ireland forward Leon Best was inches from connecting with an in-swinging Ryan Taylor free-kick with the goal at his mercy from close range, while Ba headed over from Cabaye’s corner as Newcastle’s best openings bookended the first-half. Ledley King, the injuryprone Tottenham skipper making a fifth consecutive league appearance for the first time in three-and-a-half years, limped off before the interval. Their troubles deepened just three minutes into the second-half, when Ba continued his rich run of goalscoring
SOUTH KOREA’S Choi Nayeon (pic) held off a hardcharging world No 1 Yani Tseng to win the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia in an exciting finish at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club yesterday. The world No 4 carded a nervous three-under 68 to finish on 15-under 269 to claim the top prize of US$285,000 (RM890,600). Taiwan’s Tseng, who edged past Choi to win a tournament last week in South Korea, had to settle for second despite equalling the course record with a six-under 65 to end the
competition at 14-under 270. “This week I had a great feeling. So I played very well,” Choi said. “I kept watching the leaderboard. She (Tseng) is so intimidating.” The duo were tied for the lead on 14-under until Choi’s tee shot from the 17th landed less than 10 feet from the hole and she coolly putted in to give her some breathing space. Over at the 18th, the 22-year-old Tseng missed a 20-foot birdie putt and a chance to regain a share of the lead. Her course-record 65 was

The 23-year-old attributed the win to a newfound ability to relax. “When I started to play this year, I think I put too much pressure on myself.
