Yet, the “Fruit Basket for the World”, as how it was initially celebrated, is still being actively promoted over the Internet to tourists. Another shocker: Despite it being reported in 2005 that the val-

ley in Batang Berjuntai was striving to make Selangor the biggest starfruit exporter in the world by that year end, it was learnt the park had apparently shut its doors to the public in 2008. Despite denials by the Se-

langor government, The Malay Mail can reveal the land now is almost barren of fruit trees, apart from a plot overgrown with tall coarse weeds. During our visit there recently, we could only make out coconut trees from the tangled mess of vegetation at the said plot. As for the Hollywoodlookalike Selangor Fruits Valley signage, which sits on top of the hill overlooking the valley, it looked as if it could collapse any moment. Besides that one plot, the

rest of the valley looked desolated, with slopes cut as in the manner of oil palm plantations. We further observed that the tropical showcase located along the road leading to Batang Berjuntai via Rawang, was nowhere near the “Golden Valley” it was once dubbed as. Our team tried to enter the valley via one entrance, but was stopped by one of the security guards stationed there. The guard claimed we first needed permission from the administration office located

near the main entrance. The boom gate into the site was padlocked and a sign stating “Trespassers will be prosecuted” is featured prominently next to the guard house. When we asked what had happened to all the fruit trees, the security guard answered: “Dah mati (it all died).” “How do you expect them to grow when only 20 workers are employed to work 2,000 acres of land?” said the guard who declined to be identified. • Continued on pg2

When asked if the administration personnel were working, he said office hours were from 9am to 5pm on weekdays. The security guard also said there were no more fruit trees in the valley. When asked why oil palm seedlings were being planted instead of fruit trees, he said the seedlings were to be sold to other plantations. The Selangor Fruits Valley was an initiative undertaken by the previous State government under former menteri besar Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo. The valley is managed by the Selangor Agricultural Development Corporation through its subsidiary, Selangor Oil Palm Industries Corporation Sdn Bhd. Faded signboards at the site stated this as well. The Paper That Cares tried contacting the management for clarification but was unsuccessful. This issue was raised by a concerned reader who had posted a comment on The Malay Mail website, following our July 11 expose of the failed Taman Dusun Bandar in Kuala Lumpur, a RM17 million "fruitless" project undertaken by the government.

THE wrong park. That was what Selangor Agriculture Modernisation, Natura l Res ources and Entrepreneurial Development Committee chairman Yaakob Sapari (pic) told The Malay Mail when asked about the status of the Selangor Fruits Valley in Batang Berjuntai, Rawang. In a telephone conversation, Yaakob rebutted claims the 809ha valley was barren, except for one plot of mixed vegetation. "What do you mean there were no trees? What trees do you expect to see?" Yaakob asked when told there were no fruit trees sighted apart from some coconut trees on the said plot. "You went to the wrong park. Go back there and find the real Selangor Fruits Valley. Take pictures and you will see." Yaakob was asked to comment on the condition of the valley, which is publicised as a must-see destination in the state on the Tourism Malaysia and also Selayang Municipal Council websites. Its general manager Ali Ahmad declined to comment despite us emailing him a synop-

sis of the story on the valley. He had told his secretary he would not comment until he had read the story. When contacted again, the secretary said Ali had instructed either his deputy general manager or plantation manager respond to our queries today. Meanwhile, a council spokesman said they were aware the park had been closed to the public as early as 2008. When asked why the council's website is still promoting the park, he said it was an error that would be rectified soon.

DESPITE it being allegedly closed to the public since 2008, the Selangor Fruits Valley in Batang Berjuntai near Rawang is still being promoted as a must-see tourist destination in Selangor on the Tourism Malaysia website. Details provided on the page include background information on the park and what it supposedly cultivates, how to get there, who to contact and other nearby attractions. The Tourism Malaysia website also showcases 13 photographs of the fruits valley, including landscape shots, and highlights activities tourists can enjoy during their visit there such as tram rides and tours of various orchards. The photos were taken in July 2008. On the Selayang Municipal Council website under its "Places of Interest" tab, Selangor Fruits Valley is also featured. T h e we b s i t e d e s c r i b e s the fruits valley as "one of the biggest fruit orchards

in Selangor" and has "an expectation of 100,000 visitors each year". It states visitors can take part in activities such as Pesta Durian, Ole-ole Carambola, agricultural seminars and Family Day. Besides the website claiming more than 20 types of fruits planted there, including

mangosteen, rambutan, guava and pineapple, it also states the Selangor Fruits Valley is famous for being the world's biggest starfruit exporter and a highquality starfruit producer for more than three decades. The page also showcases a gallery of eight photographs comprising the valley's various attractions and facilities.

THE four sisters who turned to The Malay Mail following allegations of abuse by their mother and her alleged lesbian lover, have settled into a home chosen by the Social Welfare Department yesterday. Their stay at the home, managed by a non-governmental organisation, is temporary until an amicable solution is found. “What’s more important now is that we first provide shelter and support for the four sisters,” said the administrator of the home, which caters to orphans, the poor and neglected girls. The siblings, aged between 15 and six, sought refuge in another shelter home for children last Friday in their desperation for safety. The shelter home accepted the girls on humanitarian grounds, even though they did not have approval from the Social Welfare Department.

Over the weekend, the girls fostered good relations with the other children at the shelter home. “The sisters have become close with all of us here. We will miss them when they leave us,” a caregiver said. “Even though we’re sad to see them go, we’re glad to have helped them in their time of need. Our home would always welcome the four of them." The eldest of the siblings told The Paper That Cares she enjoyed her time at the shelter home and their new-found friends. “They were nice and kind. I like them very much. It’s sad to leave that place but I hope we can meet them again,” said the 15-year-old, a Form Two student who lodged three police reports on July 11 at the Bukit Puchong station.

WHERE have the all boys gone? Academicians are calling for a nationwide survey to discover where male students end up after they have completed secondary education. This came following a recent revelation by Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin that only 35 per cent of male students are getting into local universities. Academicians also urged the government to rectify the situation, as they believed that should the trend continue, professional jobs may soon be dominated by women. Historian Tan Sri Dr Khoo Kay Kim told The Paper That Cares that one of the main reasons for the dismal number of male students entering local universities is that boys are lazier and not as responsible as girls when it came to studies. He said most boys prefer to make money early and on their own while taking for granted their sisters would support the family when the time comes. "However, some, if not most, are not able to hold on to a job due to their lack of academic qualifications," Khoo said. Professor Datuk Dr Ahmad Aman said there is a need for the government to act soon and rectify the situation as the trend is not new. He related his experience when he was teaching at the International Islamic University Malaysia (UIA) where candidates who sat examinations were female. While there was no written law on the percentage of students entering local universities, Lincoln College chief executive officer Professor Datuk Dr Ir Badaruddin Nordin said a study should be carried out nonetheless as to why there was a drop in male students’ entering local universities. Badaruddin said: "Boys now can go to private colleges or universities where they offer a wider range of technical courses as compared to local universities. Mohamed Khaled said the trend of more girls getting places in local universities than boys was worrying the ministry. He said the problem needed to be addressed immediately but pointed out there was a “healthy balance” of male and female students for technical-based courses.

Yesterday, The Malay Mail front-paged a report on the four sisters who fled the hellish lives of being exploited as child labourers, also ill-treated and neglected by their mother, 35, and her lover partner. The mother’s lover, recently nabbed for drug abuse, had also forced them to work to pay for her addiction. The four siblings have another sister, 14, who is with their mother. In 2005, the mother was imprisoned for 36 months and fined RM300,000 for illegal deposit-taking totalling RM1.7 million in Sabah. Their father, 46, also served the same sentence for taking deposits without a license. It's learnt the mother met her alleged lover while serving time in Kota Kinabalu prison, where the latter was convicted for an unrelated crime.

All three were released in 2008. While the girl’s father stayed put in Kota Kinabalu, the two women moved to Kuala Lumpur and subsequently took the five sisters from the care of their grandmother. (TDP1RA) and Kawasan Rukun Tetangga Taman Desa (KRTTD). The police officers, ranked inspector and above, came from the Brickfields and the Taman Desa stations. Love letter arrives 50 years late THE long-lost love letter to a US college student is on its way to him after a delay of more than 50 years, the Irish Independent reports. California University of Pennsylvania is forwarding the letter to Muhammad Siddeeq at his Indianapolis home after his friends and family members heard news reports about the letter sent to a student with his former name. The letter addressed to Clark Moore and postmarked February 1958 arrived at the campus mail room last week. The note ends: "I still miss you as much as ever and love you a thousand times more. Please write me real soon. Vonnie." Siddeeq, 74, said he has mixed emotions about it. It turns out he and Vonnie are divorced. She declined to speak to the newspaper. Still, 74year-old Siddeeq said the letter is "a testament of the sincerity, interest and innocence of that time."

Boy, five, drowns in hotel pool A FIVE-YEAR-OLD boy drowned in the swimming pool of the Gleneagle Hotel in Killarney, Ireland, the reports. Police confirmed that the boy was pronounced dead at Tralee General Hospital at around 11am on Sunday following the incident. A spokesperson for the hotel said "the pool was supervised at the time of the accident with two qualified lifequards and all appropriate steps taken.

Ireland to raise tolls on roads THE National Roads Authority of Ireland is seeking advice on the potential to raise additional revenue from new tolls on existing roads, the Irish Times reports. THE teenager caught redhanded raping a bridal boutique owner at her shop in Bandar Rinching, Semenyih, on Sunday has been remanded until July 23.

Kajang district police chief, ACP Ab Rashid Ab Wahab said the 19-year-old suspect did not have a previous criminal record. It is believed the knife-wield-

ing suspect raped the 29-yearold woman after watching pornographic videos. In the 11am incident on Sunday, the teenager pretended to be a customer and after closing

the shop door, ordered the victim to strip and then raped her. Fortunately for the woman, her husband came by the shop and he overpowered the suspect and handed him to the police.

Youth recruits three teens to form robbery gang TWO suspected robbers in a Toyota Estima sped up to 180km per hour along the SILK Highway and flashed their lights at other motorists to move aside when chased by police but their 30km getaway from Bandar Puchong Jaya to Sungai Ramal, Kajang ended when they crashed into a road divider, with one of them getting caught. The incident on Sunday night began when police received a tip-off at 9.30pm that the two suspects were behaving suspiciously at Taman Tempua, Puchong. "Once the suspects realised they were spotted by our two police patrol units, they sped to 180km per hour but we did not want to force them to stop as that would endanger other road users," said Serdang police chief, Supt Abd Razak Elias (pic). When the suspects ignored the police bullhorn warning to stop, the two police patrol units were joined by another two police MPV units. "The suspects beat two tolls before crashing into a road divider after the Sungai Ramal toll. One of them fell into a drain and was caught but his accomplice managed to escape," said Abd Razak. Upon inspecting their vehicle, police found several breakin tools and initial checks revealed the vehicle was reported stolen at Sungai Petani, Kedah two months ago. Yesterday, police raided a house in Jalan Kelang Lama, Kuala Lumpur which was believed to be occupied by the two suspects and found more break-in tools, two packets of drugs believed to be methamphetamine (syabu) and another stolen car, a Mitsubishi Triton, parked at the house. "We found many other car keys in the house and we believe the suspects were involved in other car thefts," said Abd Razak, adding that the Mitsubishi Triton was reported stolen in Kuantan, Pahang.

THE police constable awaiting punishment for "rejecting" an emergency call from a journalist on June 13, will not be interacting with the public even though he has been transferred to the bilik gerakan (operations room) at the Ampang district police headquarters. Ampang district police chief ACP Amiruddin Jamaluddin (pic) told The Malay Mail that he wants to clarify the present placement of the constable. "Before any further inquiries or misunderstandings arrive from the public, I want to explain that the

constable is only doing paperwork and house-keeping at our bilik gerakan," he said. "Yes, the bilik gerakan personnel takes calls from the public but the constable does not deal with the public in any way. He is waiting for the verdict on his disciplinary inquiry." On why the constable was not placed in other departments, Amiruddin said: "This way, I would be able to monitor him better as my office is nearby." He said the fate of the constable would be known this week and details of the inquiry would be handed over to the Selangor police chief DCP Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah. More 'thinking' students needed

RCI required for education system THE government has been urged to set up a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to study the country's education system from pre-school to tertiary levels. In making this call, National Parent-Teacher Associations Consultative Council president, Associate Prof Datuk Mohamad Ali Hasan (pic) said: "For the Malaysian education system to be on par with developed countries, there needs to be a holistic and social revamp of the whole education system. We also need to take cognisance of the 1956 Razak Report and the 1979 Mahathir Report." Mohamad Ali said the current education system is too examination-centric. "Education should also be about life, with a more realistic and reliable approach along with more emphasis on content rather than form. "There is also a need to increase proficiency in written and spoken English and encouragement of multilingualism." He said there is an urgent need to reduce polarisation in schools by fostering more racial integration. "Teachers play a vital role in getting students of various backgrounds to mingle and understand each other better. "We should also not neglect the physical, spiritual, social and emotional needs of students."

OUR education system should produce more thinking students who are critical and analytical, says National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) secretary-general Loke Yim Pheng, relative to the revamp planned by the Education Ministry to promote a global mindset. "While the revamp is welcomed, the government should seek the opinions of all education-based associations in order to develop a better education system," she said. Loke said the current education system is too examorientated with insufficient space for creative and innovative thinking. "Students nowadays are exposed to multiple subjects that take up too much time. Ultimately, the current focus is on finishing the syllabus and siting for examinations instead of encouraging students to think. "This suppresses their inner ability to develop their full potential. "They need to be independent-minded and examinations should perhaps be held once a year." Loke said the planned revamp should have deeper engagement with information communication technology (ICT).

Historian and educationist Tan Sri Khoo Kay Kim opined education should not be all about examinations. "School children today do not have much knowledge about the world as they are only taught to sit for exams and later make money when they ought to be taught about good values," he said. Khoo said he once asked his research assistants to obtain more details about a topic but they came back emptyhanded because they did not know where to look for the information. "Some students don't know how to fully use the library

and the wealth of information such a place offers. "I have lectured local and American students and when I invite questions, it is the Americans who fire off many while most Malaysians remain silent." Khoo said there are lessons to be learnt from the pre-Merdeka 1956 Razak Report, prepared by Tun Abdul Razak who was then the Education Minister, as part of the National Education Policy for the soon-to-be independent Federation of Malaya. "His report stressed on national unity through the education system for there is more to education than memorising facts and figures," he said. "Students needed to be taught to respect one another, be law-abiding citizens and

Only two of six entrances to Taman Desa Phase One open, say residents TAMAN Desa Phase One residents are facing a problem because only two of the six entrances to their neighbourhood are open. This follows a split among the residents of Taman Desa, which led to the formation of a separate residents association (RA) for Phase One. LINA KOH, a 45-year-old accountant, says that previously, all the entrances to Taman Desa were open and security guards patrolled the entire housing area around the clock. However, problems arose in March when several members of the RA started to question the fees for the security guards and decided to form a separate RA. The new RA took over control of Taman Desa Phase One, which forms half the neighbourhood, and closed four of the entrances to cut costs. Now, residents fear for their safety in case of an emergency. Says KOH: "We are concerned about what would happen, such as in the case

of a fire or when there is a need for an ambulance, with only two entrances open. "Our children are also late for school because some

Jalan Desa Damai, Jalan Desa Ria and Jalan Desa Permai. Guardhouses for the roads leading into Jalan Desa Aman, Jalan Desa Setia and Jalan Desa Murni have yet to be approved. In the meantime, Anwar says, conditions set for the approvals do not allow any obstacles to remain at these entrances until guards have been allocated for them. "As a result, action will be taken against any such obstacles," he says.

Anwar says the Neighbourhood Coordination and Control Committee (JPKK), established on June 14 this year and chaired by the City Hall director-general, is carrying out a screening programme for all areas that are yet to be approved. Refunded after being charged twice SAW JIANZHOU is upset that his trip to Banding, Indonesia, had to end on a sour note after he was charged twice for duty-free cigarettes after arriving back at the Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) in Sepang. He tells Hotline he arrived at the LCCT after his holiday on June 8 and decided to buy some duty-free cigarettes at the Eraman LCCT Emporium at the arrival hall, before his flight back to Penang.

When card members swipe a minimum of RM200 in a single receipt on their HSBC/HSBC Amanah credit card, they stand a chance to get a cash rebate equivalent to the value of the last two digits on their sales slip approval code by sending an SMS to HSBC. "I started sending SMSes

to the number provided and a notification will be sent back to me acknowledging that I qualify for the cash rebate amount. Sometimes, they also notify you that the quota for the day is full. All in all, I sent in quite a number of SMSes." YIP, 54, says the last SMS she received notified her that she has reached her maximum cash rebate of RM400 as at Feb 16. "I waited patiently and finally I sent a message to the bank from my Internet account. To my disappoint-

What a load of rubbish! Give us more bins, say residents of Impian Baiduri flats RESIDENTS at the Impian Baiduri flats claim the lack of rubbish bins has resulted in their compound being deluged with garbage. Clerk MALA KUMARI, 28, tells Hotline: "There is rubbish all over, in the back lanes, in front of the flats as well as at the construction site opposite. "People are dumping indiscriminately because they don't have a choice ... we do not have enough bins." She says numerous appeals to the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) for additional bins have gone unanswered. Another resident, K. ANNAKODI, 68, puts the blame on people rummaging for scrap metal in the rubbish bins. These collectors scatter the trash all over and fail to put the rubbish back into the bins. The Hotline Roving Team, which visited the flats, was shocked to find heaps of rubbish strewn in the compound. Meanwhile, the stench is attracting pests and rats. S. NATHAN says residents have to also put up with the foul smell. "Look at the condition of our flats. Are we living in a dumpster? Special lane for buses, taxis in Jalan Tun Sambanthan beginning Aug 20 (July 12)

Make them pay for it

IT is timely to highlight the inconsiderate behaviour of bus and taxi drivers who allow their passengers to alight in the middle of the road. Apart from risking the lives of their passengers, they pose a danger to motorists who may be caught unawares by the sudden stops these buses and taxis occasionally make. Even if it is at the request of their passengers to stop, the blame has got to be placed squarely upon the bus and taxi drivers for agreeing to make the unauthorised and dangerous stops. These bus and taxi drivers are in full control and must be made to abide by our traffic rules. As always, enforcement is almost non-existent. There we re m any c ompl ai nt s about the ineffectiveness of the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) and much hope that the situation will be improved with the takeover by the L and P ubl i c Tr ansp or t Commission (SPAD). Yet, to date, there has been not an iota of improvement. The only effective way is to penalise the bus and taxi drivers by perhaps suspending their licences for a period of one week for the first offence and an

additional week for each repeat offence. Only by hitting their pockets hard would any enforcement be effective and long-lasting. In line with the whistleblower concept, SPAD must suspend the operating licences of any offender if the public can show

photographic evidence of such vehicles stopping in the middle of the road or any unauthorised stops with passengers alighting or boarding. To satisfy those who have the civic-mindedness to submit their photographic evidence and yet remain protected, all licences sus-

pended should be published in the newspapers on a weekly basis. This public participation and this 'name and shame method' will be most effective to rid this inconsiderate behaviour on a sustainable basis. Frustrated roaduser

Bus lanes not fully utilised THERE is no need to create a special lane for buses in Brickfields because the ones that are already in place in various parts of the city still do not serve their intended purpose. I have seen many buses and taxis being driven on

the extreme right lane of the roads along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman and along Jalan Syed Putra, despite having designated lanes provided for them. These taxis and buses only keep to the left lane when picking up and dropping

off their passengers. Other than that they never fully utilise the lanes provided for them. I hope the authorities — the Road Transport Department and traffic police — can come down hard on these drivers and prevent them

from monopolising all the lanes on the road. These drivers are the cause of unnecessary congestion and inconvenience to other road users, thinking they are kings of the roads. Shaktiman

KL Biometric registration exercise on foreign workers

Improve on enforcement first WHILE it is for good reasons that we need to utilise new innovations like biometric registration to better control legal foreign workers, the underlying true cost of this exercise is tremendous. It will take a least a day off to ferry workers to have their biometric data registered. Based on a conservative salary of, say, RM30 a day and with two million legal

foreign workers, the loss of productive work is already RM60 million merely based on lost salary. If these workers were to, for instance, produce goods of value worth 10 times their salary (i.e their salary represent merely 10 per cent of cost input), the total value of production lost will balloon to RM600 million. This biometric registration

exercise does not address the core problems of illegal workers. Diligent and strict enforcement is still the paramount requirement to bring order to the whole issue of foreign workers. In fact, this biometric registration will give legitimacy to these legal workers to be foot loose and wily-nilly leave their employer and

work for another employer without fear. B efore this biometric registration exercise, the police/ immigration personnel are not bothered to take any action even when the legitimate employer were to report their legal workers unilaterally leaving their employ and even when the employer have information about where they are work-

KL Bersih 2.0 Rally: Gains and losses (July 11)

Suhakam inquiry welcomed AS a citizen, I welcome the announcement that Su ha kam, t he nat iona l human rights commission, will be conducting a public inquiry next month into allegations of police brutality during the Bersih 2.0 street demonstration on July 9. I am glad the police, as required by law, will be extending their full cooperation to the body. One hopes the police and the government will pay serious attention to the findings of the inquiry. If the police and the government have to take firm action against the wrongdoers, I hope they will do so without fear or favour. There have been occasions in the past when Suhakam’s findings on violations of human rights by State authorities have been largely ignored. As far as the forthcoming inquiry is concerned, I am looking forward to definitive answers on a couple of allegations in particular. Though the police are conducting their own investigations into the allegation by 11 doctors that they fired tear gas and chemicallaced water into the compounds of the Tung Shin and

Chinese Maternity hospitals, it is quite conceivable it will also be brought before Suhakam. Any breach of the sanctity of a hospital during a riot or a demonstration is a grave matter. Suhakam could also look into the contradictory claims by different parties on the death of one of the protesters. While investigating various claims and allegations, Suhakam will, I am sure, remain cognisant of the larger role and responsibility of the police in managing street demonstrations in any society. By the same token, the Malaysian public and the domestic media should not view Suhakam’s findings in isolation from the larger episode, including the undisguised partisan political motives behind July 9, and what they mean for the nation’s sovereignty and independence. Foreign NGOs and the foreign media cannot continue to ignore these legitimate concerns which are important for the majority of Malaysians. Dr Chandra Muzaffar

Antiretroviral drugs provide new lease on life PATIENTS taking HIV drugs in Africa can expect to have a near-normal lifespan, although men are likelier to die far sooner than women, according to the biggest study of its kind, issued yesterday at the world conference on AIDS medicine. Researchers at the University of British Columbia and the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS in western Canada trawled through data for 22,315 people in Uganda aged at least 14 who had initiated antiretroviral therapy between 2000 and 2009. They were measured against life expectancy in Uganda which is around 55 years, a figure that increases with age after the individual has cleared key milestones such as death in infancy or risk behaviour in adolescence. Individuals in the study who were at the age of 20 when they began therapy

were statistically likely to live an additional 26.7 years, and at the age of 35 another 27.9 years. But this was the overall figure, and there were big differences between the sexes. Twenty-year-old males on HIV drugs could look to an additional 19.1 years of life, but female counterparts another 30.6 years. The gap was maintained at the age of 35, when an infected male under treatment could expect to live another 22 years but a woman could live 32.5 years more. The suspected reason for this is that men tend to access care at a later stage of disease than women, when they are already badly infected by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Previous research has already established that earlier treatment leads to stronger health as the immune system,

compromised by the AIDS pathogen, recovers. The study, which was also published in the US journal Annals of Internal Medicine, is the biggest analysis of life expectancy south of the Sahara. Although the probe only looked at data for Uganda, the authors say its basket of settings, rural, semi-rural and urban, and scant medical resources make it a snapshot for Africa as a whole. "The substantial life expectancy afforded by widespread access to (antiretroviral drugs) underscores the fact that HIV diagnosis and treatment in resource-limited setting should no longer be considered a death sentence," said lead investigator Edward Mills in a press release. JALAN LOJI AIR is hardly a beautiful name for a place, but the exquisite bamboo house hidden within starkly contradicts the implications of its name. The Buluh Bentong Resort, as it’s called, is a wellmaintained estate that boasts a cosy bamboo home as its centrepiece. Owned by Mohd Ramadhan Abdul Hamid, he intended the abode to

serve as a private home for his family but seeing as they were uninterested, he transformed the place into the resort it currently is. Built back in 2008, this sturdy construct took a mere four people about 12 months to complete. The result is a stunning abode that any nature lover would relish in its confines. The interior has been tastefully decorated with a myriad of rattan furniture that exudes a contemporary vibe. The makers of the furniture, conveniently

enough, are located right next to the house. Design Principles (DP), a local furniture maker that specialises in quality rattan furniture, is a good example of utilising rattan, a material that’s typically attributed to traditional crafts, to create contemporary pieces. Basing their workshop right in the heart of Buluh Bentong Resort, Rahim Ismail, who owns the business, provided a live illustration of the makings of his company’s furniture. Using only the highestgrade rattan, these products of uncompromising quality have made their way into international markets. A particular range of furniture, that bases its concept on a whale, is a quaint, but ultimately beautiful set of functional art that would surely catch many eyes. If the interior decorations of the bamboo house were any indication, the contemporary bamboo furniture would harmonize perfectly with a nature/ modern hybrid home. Ramadas ALONG Jalan Teluk Piah Kanan is this small enterprise, owned by V.N. Ramadas, hence the business’s name. Dealing in the fine art of ceramic craftsmanship, the Ramadas business is one that has persevered through three generations since his granddad arrived from India. V.N. Ramadas himself has been getting his hands dirty making earthenware for the past 42 years, ever since he became an alumna from high school. The family-owned business started due to

the abundance of relevant materials, and 50 other families followed suit in working with clay. As of now, however, that number has dwindled to a tenth of that. The clay used is known as ball clay, is relatively rare form of clay that is sourced from Bestari Jaya. With it, they

fashion ceramic cups, cooking pots, even fountains and tandors. According to one of the workers, she makes about 2,000 cups daily from 8am to 6pm. Want to get your hands dirty too? Perhaps, if you ask nicely, Ramadas might just let you have a go with the pottery wheel. Be warned though: it’s not as easy as it looks.

Leena Hassan, 27, the manager of Mahkota Songket , welcomed the group into the songket-making facility, where the first floor used mechanised sowing machines, while the second floor used a more traditional wooden construct, known as the kek machine. The floral and

other geometrical patterns require such skill and patience it takes around a month or more to complete one songket, depending on the complexity of the embellishments. CHELSEA manager Andre Villas-Boas has put his foot down and told his players what he expects of them — and that is to step up a level. The former Porto manager insists while he is happy with the players, he has his own ideas and will look to implement them. "I have seen them in training and they all have the potential to do more than what they have been doing," he said. Villas-Boas, 33, also said it is for the players to show him what they can offer to him and not the other way around. "It is good that we are

Ambitious Baku joins WTA host cities club AZERBAIJAN, flush with gas dollars and keen to boost its image, yesterday joined the club of former Soviet republics holding top tennis tournaments as the first ever WTA Baku Cup started in the capital. The tennis tournament in Baku, organised under the patronage of the late president Heidar Aliyev's foundation, became the third WTA event after Moscow's Kremlin Cup and the Tashkent Open in Uzbekistan. The Azerbaijan tennis federation's initiative to hold the elite women's tennis event was also backed by some of the country's biggest banks and the State-run oil company Socar (State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic). The idea of hosting the tennis tournament also received

BRAZIL coach Mano Menezes insisted this morning there was no need to panic after his side lost their Copa America quarterfinal shoot-out to Paraguay yesterday. The media were scathing after a poor match ended goalless following extra-time and lambasted the auriverde for contriving to miss all four of their penalties. "I know you live and die by results," said Menezes. "But these will come if we continue on the path we are on." The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) will allow him to stay at the helm through to 2014, president Ricardo Teixeira said in an overnight statement from Rio.

"There is not much time to cry over the Copa America elimination," said Teixeira, adding that Brazil had been unlucky to crash out. Teixeira said he had phoned Menezes to underline that the "project to renew the Brazilian team with the principal objective — the 2014 World Cup — remains in place". Menezes said the Paraguay game had to be forgotten. "Of course if we keep raking over the four missed penalties that saw us go out then we will not talk about the game we played, which marked an evolution in the team and the squad," Menezes told a news conference. 'Old Lady' snubbed Inter to keep 2006 Scudetto, Juventus to take legal action

INTER MILAN were confirmed as 2006 Serie A champions this morning after Italy's football federation (FIGC) said they did not have the authority to revoke the decision which stripped Juventus of the title. Juventus had called for the Scudetto award to be revoked following allegations of involvement by Inter in the Calciopoli corruption scandal. The Turin team won the Scudetto in 2004/05 and 2005/06 but were stripped of the titles for their involvement in the scandal and demoted to Serie B, with the latter championship handed to Inter. "The federal council (executive committee) has turned down Juventus' petition regarding the 2006 Scudetto with a declaration that it is not competent to revoke it," said the FIGC in a statement. The FIGC explained the decision by saying that Juventus had been penalised by a disciplinary board which it did not have the power to overrule. The decision was widely expected, coming after FIGC lawyers decided this month not to pursue Juventus's

Manager Alex Ferguson has already spoken of the difficulties involved in finding an alternative to a player he regards as one of the best he has ever worked with.
