By Marhalim Abas mabas@mmail.com.my THE mega 809ha Selangor Fruits Valley initiative, which promised to be the largest starfruit farm in the world, has become a huge disgrace instead. Yet, the “Fruit Basket for the World”, as how it was initially celebrated, is still being actively promoted over the Internet to tourists. Another shocker: Despite it being reported in 2005 that the val-

ley in Batang Berjuntai was striving to make Selangor the biggest starfruit exporter in the world by that year end, it was learnt the park had apparently shut its doors to the public in 2008. Despite denials by the Se-

langor government, The Malay Mail can reveal the land now is almost barren of fruit trees, apart from a plot overgrown with tall coarse weeds. During our visit there recently, we could only make out coconut trees from the tangled mess of vegetation at the said plot. As for the Hollywoodlookalike Selangor Fruits Valley signage, which sits on top of the hill overlooking the valley, it looked as if it could collapse any moment. Besides that one plot, the

rest of the valley looked desolated, with slopes cut as in the manner of oil palm plantations. We further observed that the tropical showcase located along the road leading to Batang Berjuntai via Rawang, was nowhere near the “Golden Valley” it was once dubbed as. Our team tried to enter the valley via one entrance, but was stopped by one of the security guards stationed there. The guard claimed we first needed permission from the administration office located

near the main entrance. The boom gate into the site was padlocked and a sign stating “Trespassers will be prosecuted” is featured prominently next to the guard house. When we asked what had happened to all the fruit trees, the security guard answered: “Dah mati (it all died).” “How do you expect them to grow when only 20 workers are employed to work 2,000 acres of land?” said the guard who declined to be identified. • Continued on pg2

'You went to the wrong park'

• From pg1 The Malay Mail team then headed to the main entrance but a boom gate blocked our way. The lone security guard on duty there too said visitors were not allowed. When asked if the administration personnel were working, he said office hours were from 9am to 5pm on weekdays. The security guard also said there were no more fruit trees in the valley. When asked why oil palm seedlings were being planted instead of fruit trees, he said the seedlings were to be sold to other plantations. The Selangor Fruits Valley was an initiative undertaken by the previous State government under former menteri besar Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo. The valley is managed by the Selangor Agricultural Development Corporation through its subsidiary, Selangor Oil Palm Industries Corporation Sdn Bhd. Faded signboards at the site stated this as well. The Paper That Cares tried contacting the management for clarification but was unsuccessful. This issue was raised by a concerned reader who had posted a comment on The Malay Mail website, following our July 11 expose of the failed Taman Dusun Bandar in Kuala Lumpur, a RM17 million "fruitless" project undertaken by the government.

Committee chairman brushes aside claims of Selangor Fruits Valley's sorry condition By MARHALIM ABAS mabas@mmail.com.my

THE wrong park. That was what Selangor Agriculture Modernisation, Natura l Res ources and Entrepreneurial Development Committee chairman Yaakob Sapari (pic) told The Malay Mail when asked about the status of the Selangor Fruits Valley in Batang Berjuntai, Rawang. In a telephone conversation, Yaakob rebutted claims the 809ha valley was barren, except for one plot of mixed vegetation. "What do you mean there were no trees? What trees do you expect to see?" Yaakob asked when told there were no fruit trees sighted apart from some coconut trees on the said plot. "You went to the wrong park. Go back there and find the real Selangor Fruits Valley. Take pictures and you will see." Yaakob was asked to comment on the condition of the valley, which is publicised as a must-see destination in the state on the Tourism Malaysia and also Selayang Municipal Council websites. Its general manager Ali Ahmad declined to comment despite us emailing him a synop-

sis of the story on the valley. He had told his secretary he would not comment until he had read the story. When contacted again, the secretary said Ali had instructed either his deputy general manager or plantation manager respond to our queries today. Meanwhile, a council spokesman said they were aware the park had been closed to the public as early as 2008. When asked why the council's website is still promoting the park, he said it was an error that would be rectified soon.

DESPITE it being allegedly closed to the public since 2008, the Selangor Fruits Valley in Batang Berjuntai near Rawang is still being promoted as a must-see tourist destination in Selangor on the Tourism Malaysia website. Details provided on the page include background information on the park and what it supposedly cultivates, how to get there, who to contact and other nearby attractions. The Tourism Malaysia website also showcases 13 photographs of the fruits valley, including landscape shots, and highlights activities tourists can enjoy during their visit there such as tram rides and tours of various orchards. The photos were taken in July 2008. On the Selayang Municipal Council website under its "Places of Interest" tab, Selangor Fruits Valley is also featured. T h e we b s i t e d e s c r i b e s the fruits valley as "one of the biggest fruit orchards

in Selangor" and has "an expectation of 100,000 visitors each year". It states visitors can take part in activities such as Pesta Durian, Ole-ole Carambola, agricultural seminars and Family Day. Besides the website claiming more than 20 types of fruits planted there, including

mangosteen, rambutan, guava and pineapple, it also states the Selangor Fruits Valley is famous for being the world's biggest starfruit exporter and a highquality starfruit producer for more than three decades. The page also showcases a gallery of eight photographs comprising the valley's various attractions and facilities.

Abused siblings find love in temporary welfare home By Ee Ann Nee ean@mmail.com.my

THE four sisters who turned to The Malay Mail following allegations of abuse by their mother and her alleged lesbian lover, have settled into a home chosen by the Social Welfare Department yesterday. Their stay at the home, managed by a non-governmental organisation, is temporary until an amicable solution is found. “What’s more important now is that we first provide shelter and support for the four sisters,” said the administrator of the home, which caters to orphans, the poor and neglected girls. The siblings, aged between 15 and six, sought refuge in another shelter home for children last Friday in their desperation for safety. The shelter home accepted the girls on humanitarian grounds, even though they did not have approval from the Social Welfare Department.

Over the weekend, the girls fostered good relations with the other children at the shelter home. “The sisters have become close with all of us here. We will miss them when they leave us,” a caregiver said. “Even though we’re sad to see them go, we’re glad to have helped them in their time of need. Our home would always welcome the four of them." The eldest of the siblings told The Paper That Cares she enjoyed her time at the shelter home and their new-found friends. “They were nice and kind. I like them very much. It’s sad to leave that place but I hope we can meet them again,” said the 15-year-old, a Form Two student who lodged three police reports on July 11 at the Bukit Puchong station.

Academicians: Probe cause for fewer male students By ANDREW SAGAYAM andrew@mmail.com.my

WHERE have the all boys gone? Academicians are calling for a nationwide survey to discover where male students end up after they have completed secondary education. This came following a recent revelation by Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin that only 35 per cent of male students are getting into local universities. Academicians also urged the government to rectify the situation, as they believed that should the trend continue, professional jobs may soon be dominated by women. Historian Tan Sri Dr Khoo Kay Kim told The Paper That Cares that one of the main reasons for the dismal number of male students entering local universities is that boys are lazier and not as responsible as girls when it came to studies. He said most boys prefer to make money early and on their own while taking for granted their sisters would support the family when the time comes. "However, some, if not most, are not able to hold on to a job due to their lack of academic qualifications," Khoo said. Meanwhile Masterskill Education Group Berhad Student Affairs and Development deputy vice-chancellor Associate

Professor Datuk Dr Ahmad Aman said there is a need for the government to act soon and rectify the situation as the trend is not new. He related his experience when he was teaching at the International Islamic University Malaysia (UIA) where candidates who sat examinations were female. While there was no written law on the percentage of students entering local universities, Lincoln College chief executive officer Professor Datuk Dr Ir Badaruddin Nordin said a study should be carried out nonetheless as to why there was a drop in male students’ entering local universities. Badaruddin said: "Boys now can go to private colleges or universities where they offer a wider range of technical courses as compared to local universities. Mohamed Khaled said the trend of more girls getting places in local universities than boys was worrying the ministry. He said the problem needed to be addressed immediately but pointed out there was a “healthy balance” of male and female students for technical-based courses.

Yesterday, The Malay Mail front-paged a report on the four sisters who fled the hellish lives of being exploited as child labourers, also ill-treated and neglected by their mother, 35, and her lover partner. The mother’s lover, recently nabbed for drug abuse, had also forced them to work to pay for her addiction. The four siblings have another sister, 14, who is with their mother. In 2005, the mother was imprisoned for 36 months and fined RM300,000 for illegal deposit-taking totalling RM1.7 million in Sabah. Their father, 46, also served the same sentence for taking deposits without a license. It's learnt the mother met her alleged lover while serving time in Kota Kinabalu prison, where the latter was convicted for an unrelated crime.

All three were released in 2008. While the girl’s father stayed put in Kota Kinabalu, the two women moved to Kuala Lumpur and subsequently took the five sisters from the care of their grandmother. After more than three years of alleged torture, four of them, aged 15, 12, eight and six, fled their home two weeks ago when their mother and the other 14-year-old sibling went PARTING HUG: An aunt (right) hugging her 12-year-old niece before shopping. she left for a social welfare home

Community policing at Taman Desa Phase 1 lauded By Siti Nursuraya Ali suraya@mmail.com.my

DESPITE having zero crime in their neighbourhood, residents of Taman Desa Phase 1 work hand-in-hand with police to ensure even better security and a safer environment prevails. In last Friday's community policing event, organised by the Brickfields police headquarters, 15 police officers were briefed by representatives of the Taman Desa Phase 1 Residents Association

(TDP1RA) and Kawasan Rukun Tetangga Taman Desa (KRTTD). The police officers, ranked inspector and above, came from the Brickfields and the Taman Desa stations. months after TDP1RA was formed on March 23. However, TDP1RA representatives expressed concern over the recent spate of house breakins at neighbouring Taman Desa Phase 2 and hope it does not spread into Phase 1. Phase 2 also is a guarded neighbourhood managed by the Taman Desa Residents Association (TDRA). TDP1RA president Jack Lew Sau Kuan told The Malay Mail: "We are happy our area has zero crime and together with the cooperation of police, we want to ensure our neighbourhood continues to be crime-free where children can have fun in the playground and adults go about their chores free of worries." Lew said they are grateful Brickfields police, despite their busy schedule, organised the community event to hear the concerns of Phase 1 residents. "Taman Desa was opened in 1977 and we feel honoured to have this session with police responsible for our area," he said. "TDP1RA and KRTTD have been working on security in our neighbourhood and we also feel we must work closely with the police too."

The letter addressed to Clark Moore and postmarked February 1958 arrived at the campus mail room last week. The note ends: "I still miss you as much as ever and love you a thousand times more. Please write me real soon. Vonnie." Siddeeq, 74, said he has mixed emotions about it. It turns out he and Vonnie are divorced. She declined to speak to the newspaper. Still, 74year-old Siddeeq said the letter is "a testament of the sincerity, interest and innocence of that time."

Police remand knife-wielding teen rapist

THE teenager caught redhanded raping a bridal boutique owner at her shop in Bandar Rinching, Semenyih, on Sunday has been remanded until July 23.

Kajang district police chief, ACP Ab Rashid Ab Wahab said the 19-year-old suspect did not have a previous criminal record. It is believed the knife-wield-

ing suspect raped the 29-yearold woman after watching pornographic videos. In the 11am incident on Sunday, the teenager pretended to be a customer and after closing

the shop door, ordered the victim to strip and then raped her. Fortunately for the woman, her husband came by the shop and he overpowered the suspect and handed him to the police.

Youth recruits three teens to form robbery gang TWO suspected robbers in a Toyota Estima sped up to 180km per hour along the SILK Highway and flashed their lights at other motorists to move aside when chased by police but their 30km getaway from Bandar Puchong Jaya to Sungai Ramal, Kajang ended when they crashed into a road divider, with one of them getting caught. The incident on Sunday night began when police received a tip-off at 9.30pm that the two suspects were behaving suspiciously at Taman Tempua, Puchong. "Once the suspects realised they were spotted by our two police patrol units, they sped to 180km per hour but we did not want to force them to stop as that would endanger other road users," said Serdang police chief, Supt Abd Razak Elias (pic). When the suspects ignored the police bullhorn warning to stop, the two police patrol units were joined by another two police MPV units. "The suspects beat two tolls before crashing into a road divider after the Sungai Ramal toll. One of them fell into a drain and was caught but his accomplice managed to escape," said Abd Razak. Upon inspecting their vehicle, police found several breakin tools and initial checks revealed the vehicle was reported stolen at Sungai Petani, Kedah two months ago. Yesterday, police raided a house in Jalan Kelang Lama, Kuala Lumpur which was believed to be occupied by the two suspects and found more break-in tools, two packets of drugs believed to be methamphetamine (syabu) and another stolen car, a Mitsubishi Triton, parked at the house. "We found many other car keys in the house and we believe the suspects were involved in other car thefts," said Abd Razak, adding that the Mitsubishi Triton was reported stolen in Kuantan, Pahang.

But all four were nabbed within eight hours after their maiden heist of a cabinet minister's political secretary’s home in Bandar Tun Hussein Onn, last Saturday night. It is learnt the 20-year-old had split up with his earlier gang and formed a new one by 'recruiting' two students aged 17 and another student aged 19. Parents should be more vigilant of their children's activities as they could be mixing with the wrong company

— ACP Ab Rashid Ab Wahab the gang leader was armed with a samurai sword while his three accomplices were tasked with carrying break-in tools and tying up the house owner's Indonesian maid. In the 7.30pm incident on Saturday, the gang fled with RM150, a gold watch, cell-

phones, two laptops and a Playstation 3 game console worth about RM16,000 in total. When the maid freed herself, she alerted her employer who then called the police. From descriptions given by the maid, police tracked

down the four suspects and made the first arrest at 10pm the same night and the other three by 2.30am on Sunday. All four were arrested at their parents' homes in Kajang. “Parents should be more vigilant of their children's activities as they could be mixing with the wrong company," said Ab Rashid. Recently, the Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) stated that teenage students' involvement in crimes have increased by 38 per cent, from 1,409 cases in 2009 to 1,947 cases in 2010.

Ampang district police chief ACP Amiruddin Jamaluddin (pic) told The Malay Mail that he wants to clarify the present placement of the constable. "Before any further inquiries or misunderstandings arrive from the public, I want to explain that the

"Yes, the bilik gerakan personnel takes calls from the public but the constable does not deal with the public in any way. He is waiting for the verdict on his disciplinary inquiry." On why the constable was not placed in other departments, Amiruddin said: "This way, I would be able to monitor him better as my office is nearby." He said the fate of the constable would be known this week and details of the inquiry would be handed over to the Selangor police chief DCP Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah. "The inquiry and recording of statements have been completed. The disciplinary com-

More 'thinking' students needed

Revamped education system should be less exam-centric and more innovation-oriented By T.K. Letchumy Tamboo and Cecilia Victor mmnews@mmail.com.my

RCI required for education system THE government has been urged to set up a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to study the country's education system from pre-school to tertiary levels. In making this call, National Parent-Teacher Associations Consultative Council president, Associate Prof Datuk Mohamad Ali Hasan (pic) said: "For the Malaysian education system to be on par with developed countries, there needs to be a holistic and social revamp of the whole education system. We also need to take cognisance of the 1956 Razak Report and the 1979 Mahathir Report." Mohamad Ali said the current education system is too examination-centric. "Education should also be about life, with a more realistic and reliable approach along with more emphasis on content rather than form. "There is also a need to increase proficiency in written and spoken English and encouragement of multilingualism." He said there is an urgent need to reduce polarisation in schools by fostering more racial integration. "Teachers play a vital role in getting students of various backgrounds to mingle and understand each other better. "We should also not neglect the physical, spiritual, social and emotional needs of students."

OUR education system should produce more thinking students who are critical and analytical, says National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) secretary-general Loke Yim Pheng, relative to the revamp planned by the Education Ministry to promote a global mindset. "While the revamp is welcomed, the government should seek the opinions of all education-based associations in order to develop a better education system," she said. Loke said the current education system is too examorientated with insufficient space for creative and innovative thinking. "Students nowadays are exposed to multiple subjects that take up too much time. Ultimately, the current focus is on finishing the syllabus and siting for examinations instead of encouraging students to think. "This suppresses their inner ability to develop their full potential. "They need to be independent-minded and examinations should perhaps be held once a year." Loke said the planned revamp should have deeper engagement with information communication technology (ICT).

There is a need to have properlytrained teachers in order to produce thinking students

— Khoo Kay Kim "In today's rapidly progressing world, everything is ICT-based. "The new system should be carried out gradually so that students do not experience 'culture shock'." Historian and educationist Tan Sri Khoo Kay Kim opined education should not be all about examinations. "School children today do not have much knowledge about the world as they are only taught to sit for exams and later make money when they ought to be taught about good values," he said. Khoo said he once asked his research assistants to obtain more details about a topic but they came back emptyhanded because they did not know where to look for the information. "Some students don't know how to fully use the library

and the wealth of information such a place offers. "I have lectured local and American students and when I invite questions, it is the Americans who fire off many while most Malaysians remain silent." Khoo said there are lessons to be learnt from the pre-Merdeka 1956 Razak Report, prepared by Tun Abdul Razak who was then the Education Minister, as part of the National Education Policy for the soon-to-be independent Federation of Malaya. "His report stressed on national unity through the education system for there is more to education than memorising facts and figures," he said. "Students needed to be taught to respect one another, be law-abiding citizens and

"Students who can converse and write fluently in English have an advantage in acquiring greater knowledge and generally get better jobs and other opportunities," said Norhashimah, 42, a mother of two children. "The sooner the education system is revamped, the sooner our future generations and country will benefit." Khoo Heng Ching, a secondary school teacher with two children, commended the government's revamp move. "We must groom students to have a critical mindset and provide them a solid educational foundation for their future," he said. "There needs to be a varied balance between academic and outdoor activities, and

it should be compulsory for students to join a sports club, uniformed brigade or artistic society." Parent Action Group for Education (PAGE) president Datin Azimah Rahim said revamp is crucial for the country to move forward. "The current system is outdated in the sense that many graduates are not fit for employment and a lot of that has to do with not being proficient in English," she said. "Our education system was once on par with Singapore but it has since dropped to the level of Thailand. We should emulate the good education system found in Finland and South Korea." Azimah also said the examination grading has become

such good values needed to be instilled while they w e r e s cho oling." Khoo said there is a need to have properlytrained teachers in order to produce thinking students. "There's no point in revamping the whole system if the teachers involved in the implementation are not trained well." Last week, Deputy Prime Minister and Education M i n i s t e r Ta n Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said a team led by the director-general of education, Datuk Abdul Ghafar Mahmud, had been tasked with preparing a report on the complete revamping of the education system which will be tabled for cabinet approval by end of this year.

Emphasis on English important

PARENTS feel revamp of the education system should emphasise the importance of proficiency in English, The Malay Mail found in a random survey. "English is a universal language and unless we stress its importance, it will affect the future employability of our children," says Saroja Francis, 50, who has three children. "The reading habit among students is lacking and teachers should spend more time instilling knowledge that make students think." Saroja said there is also a need to stamp out racist attitudes among students and teachers. Another parent, Norhashimah Karim, agreed proficiency in English is vital.

too lenient too. "There was a time when grade 'A' meant 90 per cent correct answers but now grade 'A' means about 70 per cent thus producing lower qu a lity g radu ates. That has to change."

AMERICAN author Cleveland Amory (1917-1998) said: "What this world needs is a new kind of army — the army of the kind." That surely applies to The Malay Mail's Opinion of the Week winner Monija Nair who donated her prize of a Dutch Lady hamper to The Pure Life Society at Jalan Puchong yesterday. The hamper was received by the society's administration head

P. Subramaniam. In her winning letter, Monija, 18, upset by the death of seven-year-old Saiful Syazani Sopfidee on April 3 after being assaulted by his teacher, wrote: "Caning is not the way to discipline children." Monija, who's pursuing studies at Taylor's College where she is also student president, said children can be disciplined through non-aggressive ways.

"I choose to donate the hamper to The Pure Life Society as my father was once taken under the wing of this organisation and treasures the knowledge he gained there," said Monija as she mingled with children at the society's premises. "It makes me smile to see children being taken care so well at this long-established home well-known for the dedication of its teachers and staff."

The Pure Life Society was founded by the late Swami Satyananda in 1949 as a spiritual foundation and its activities are governed by the Pure Life Society (Shuddha Samajam). The organisation works with orphans, the abandoned, abused, neglected and children from broken homes. Datin Paduka Mother A. Mangalam is the society's president.

TWITTER YOUR S@Y Confidence a key factor By JOE LEE joelee@mmail.com.my twitter.com/klubbkiddkl THE trend is for popular Malay novels to be adapted, be it for the big, or small screen. Of course, there’s full length feature films like the upcoming Ombak Rindu and Lagenda Budak Setan which did well at the box office, with the latter even made into a TV series. Our simple question for Twitterdom this time around is – does that show a lack of creativity when it comes to offerings of local scriptwriters, a way to sell a production or just the strong following of local fiction. Here are the responses to the writer at @klubbkiddkl. Some portions of the tweets have been modified, without alterations to the intent of the message. @zarasufian: I was thinking the same thing. No one dares to come up with fresh ideas it seems.

@Qarl_Haiqal: There’s probably less need for a heavier budget or so to promote the effort, if it’s based on a novel that is already established.

@FauzanaIzwah: All of the above. It’s an easier way to get an audience based on novel sales.

@atreyustrange: Maybe it’s just the confidence in ability of a director to deliver the emotions behind the story. @ZaAzman: Signs of wanting to produce something fast, with not enough ideas to work on.

@benzhiraz: It’s OK. I would watch for the stories I like to be adapted on screen.

Only two of six entrances to Taman Desa Phase One open, say residents TAMAN Desa Phase One residents are facing a problem because only two of the six entrances to their neighbourhood are open. This follows a split among the residents of Taman Desa, which led to the formation of a separate residents association (RA) for Phase One. LINA KOH, a 45-year-old accountant, says that previously, all the entrances to Taman Desa were open and security guards patrolled the entire housing area around the clock. However, problems arose in March when several members of the RA started to question the fees for the security guards and decided to form a separate RA. The new RA took over control of Taman Desa Phase One, which forms half the neighbourhood, and closed four of the entrances to cut costs. Now, residents fear for their safety in case of an emergency. Says KOH: "We are concerned about what would happen, such as in the case

of a fire or when there is a need for an ambulance, with only two entrances open. "Our children are also late for school because some

residents have to travel a greater distance around the neighbourhood in order to exit." KOH says there there are only 11 guards patrolling Phase One — seven from 6am to 10pm and four from 10pm to 6am. She says that according to the law, RAs are not allowed to close the entrances and exits at any housing area. "What makes the new RA think they have the right to close four of the entrances?" She also says the RA gives

a one-month discount for residents who pay up their annual fees in one go. "RAs should not be handling financial matters this way," says KOH.

● CITY HALL Corporate

Communications Unit head Anwar Mohammad Zain says the request for neighbourhood guards in Taman Desa was approved on April 1, 2010. However, approval for guardhouses was only given for three of Taman Desa's access roads —

Jalan Desa Damai, Jalan Desa Ria and Jalan Desa Permai. Guardhouses for the roads leading into Jalan Desa Aman, Jalan Desa Setia and Jalan Desa Murni have yet to be approved. In the meantime, Anwar says, conditions set for the approvals do not allow any obstacles to remain at these entrances until guards have been allocated for them. "As a result, action will be taken against any such obstacles," he says.

Anwar says the Neighbourhood Coordination and Control Committee (JPKK), established on June 14 this year and chaired by the City Hall director-general, is carrying out a screening programme for all areas that are yet to be approved. "Any remaining structural barriers and booths will not be allowed," he tells Hotline. When reached for comments, KOH expresses satisfaction with City Hall's response.

Refunded after being charged twice SAW JIANZHOU is upset that his trip to Banding, Indonesia, had to end on a sour note after he was charged twice for duty-free cigarettes after arriving back at the Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) in Sepang. He tells Hotline he arrived at the LCCT after his holiday on June 8 and decided to buy some duty-free cigarettes at the Eraman LCCT Emporium at the arrival hall, before his flight back to Penang.

"I paid for the item using my debit card. However, the cashier informed me the first transaction did not go through and so she swiped my card again." After signing the receipt, SAW proceeded to catch his transit flight to Penang. Later, when he checked his bank transaction online, he found that he had been charged twice for the purchase. Finally, she gets her cash back YIP LEE WAH of Kajang, Selangor, is unhappy with the treatment she received from the HSBC CNY Cashback Programme, launched during Chinese New Year this year. When card members swipe a minimum of RM200 in a single receipt on their HSBC/HSBC Amanah credit card, they stand a chance to get a cash rebate equivalent to the value of the last two digits on their sales slip approval code by sending an SMS to HSBC. "I started sending SMSes

to the number provided and a notification will be sent back to me acknowledging that I qualify for the cash rebate amount. Sometimes, they also notify you that the quota for the day is full. All in all, I sent in quite a number of SMSes." YIP, 54, says the last SMS she received notified her that she has reached her maximum cash rebate of RM400 as at Feb 16. "I waited patiently and finally I sent a message to the bank from my Internet account. To my disappoint-

ment, the bank told me I lost all the money because I did not respond to two SMSes sent to my mobile phone." YIP claims she did not receive the SMSes. She says if a card member has qualified, the amount should be credited directly into the credit card account. "Some friends told me they did not receive any SMS but the amount was credited into their credit card." YIP says she also called

the bank's toll-free number and was informed that a bank staff will contact her. However, she says she did not receive any call. ● A HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad spokesman says the bank has looked into YIP's case when alerted by Hotline. "We have contacted YIP to address her concerns and the matter has been amicably resolved." When contacted, YIP says the RM400 has been credited into her account.

What a load of rubbish! Give us more bins, say residents of Impian Baiduri flats RESIDENTS at the Impian Baiduri flats claim the lack of rubbish bins has resulted in their compound being deluged with garbage. Clerk MALA KUMARI, 28, tells Hotline: "There is rubbish all over, in the back lanes, in front of the flats as well as at the construction site opposite. "People are dumping indiscriminately because they don't have a choice ... we do not have enough bins." She says numerous appeals to the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) for additional bins have gone unanswered. Another resident, K. ANNAKODI, 68, puts the blame on people rummaging for scrap metal in the rubbish bins. These collectors scatter the trash all over and fail to put the rubbish back into the bins. The Hotline Roving Team, which visited the flats, was shocked to find heaps of rubbish strewn in the compound. Meanwhile, the stench is attracting pests and rats. S. NATHAN says residents have to also put up with the foul smell. "Look at the condition of our flats. Are we living in a dumpster? Can’t the council provide us with more bins?” asks the 60-year-old retiree. ROHEZAD OTSMAN, 44, tells Hotline there are only 10 bins for the entire four blocks. He says the unhygienic conditions are posing a health hazard to the residents.

Online Hotline comments www.mmail.com.my Terror in the park (July 18) ● City Hall must place enforcement officers at these parks to stop the nonsense before someone gets hurt. The public has no power to stop these hooligans. Maybe City Hall can arrange with the Road Transport Department to impound those motorbikes which are a nuisance. However, I have the feeling the council won't act until someone dies and they will be the first to point fingers. — Nawawi ● What, three months? Why so long (to put up barriers)? What if any snatch theft happens before that time, can we sue City Hall? — Anonymous ● Just look at those motorcyclists riding through the park without helmets and among the visitors. These Mat Rempit are a problem to the Malaysian people wherever they go. They behave as though they own the roads meant for recreational purposes and have the cheek to ride without wearing helmets, too. City Hall and the police should patrol such parks and arrest these motorcyclists who flout the law. — shaktiman Car broken down, stranded on highway (July 18) ● AAM, please get a helicopter to assist your members next time. What a lame excuse about traffic and congestion. If you had the motorbikes, why wasn’t one sent out to assist the stranded man? Special lane for buses, taxis in Jalan Tun Sambanthan beginning Aug 20 (July 12)

Make them pay for it

IT is timely to highlight the inconsiderate behaviour of bus and taxi drivers who allow their passengers to alight in the middle of the road. Apart from risking the lives of their passengers, they pose a danger to motorists who may be caught unawares by the sudden stops these buses and taxis occasionally make. Even if it is at the request of their passengers to stop, the blame has got to be placed squarely upon the bus and taxi drivers for agreeing to make the unauthorised and dangerous stops. These bus and taxi drivers are in full control and must be made to abide by our traffic rules. As always, enforcement is almost non-existent. There we re m any c ompl ai nt s about the ineffectiveness of the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) and much hope that the situation will be improved with the takeover by the L and P ubl i c Tr ansp or t Commission (SPAD). Yet, to date, there has been not an iota of improvement. The only effective way is to penalise the bus and taxi drivers by perhaps suspending their licences for a period of one week for the first offence and an

DANGEROUS: Buses and taxis stopping in the middle of the road pose a danger not only to their passengers but to other motorists as well

additional week for each repeat offence. Only by hitting their pockets hard would any enforcement be effective and long-lasting. In line with the whistleblower concept, SPAD must suspend the operating licences of any offender if the public can show

photographic evidence of such vehicles stopping in the middle of the road or any unauthorised stops with passengers alighting or boarding. To satisfy those who have the civic-mindedness to submit their photographic evidence and yet remain protected, all licences sus-

pended should be published in the newspapers on a weekly basis. This public participation and this 'name and shame method' will be most effective to rid this inconsiderate behaviour on a sustainable basis. Frustrated roaduser

Bus lanes not fully utilised THERE is no need to create a special lane for buses in Brickfields because the ones that are already in place in various parts of the city still do not serve their intended purpose. I have seen many buses and taxis being driven on

the extreme right lane of the roads along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman and along Jalan Syed Putra, despite having designated lanes provided for them. These taxis and buses only keep to the left lane when picking up and dropping

off their passengers. Other than that they never fully utilise the lanes provided for them. I hope the authorities — the Road Transport Department and traffic police — can come down hard on these drivers and prevent them

from monopolising all the lanes on the road. These drivers are the cause of unnecessary congestion and inconvenience to other road users, thinking they are kings of the roads. Shaktiman

KL Biometric registration exercise on foreign workers

Improve on enforcement first WHILE it is for good reasons that we need to utilise new innovations like biometric registration to better control legal foreign workers, the underlying true cost of this exercise is tremendous. It will take a least a day off to ferry workers to have their biometric data registered. Based on a conservative salary of, say, RM30 a day and with two million legal

foreign workers, the loss of productive work is already RM60 million merely based on lost salary. If these workers were to, for instance, produce goods of value worth 10 times their salary (i.e their salary represent merely 10 per cent of cost input), the total value of production lost will balloon to RM600 million. This biometric registration

exercise does not address the core problems of illegal workers. Diligent and strict enforcement is still the paramount requirement to bring order to the whole issue of foreign workers. In fact, this biometric registration will give legitimacy to these legal workers to be foot loose and wily-nilly leave their employer and

work for another employer without fear. B efore this biometric registration exercise, the police/ immigration personnel are not bothered to take any action even when the legitimate employer were to report their legal workers unilaterally leaving their employ and even when the employer have information about where they are work-

KL Bersih 2.0 Rally: Gains and losses (July 11)

Suhakam inquiry welcomed AS a citizen, I welcome the announcement that Su ha kam, t he nat iona l human rights commission, will be conducting a public inquiry next month into allegations of police brutality during the Bersih 2.0 street demonstration on July 9. I am glad the police, as required by law, will be extending their full cooperation to the body. One hopes the police and the government will pay serious attention to the findings of the inquiry. If the police and the government have to take firm action against the wrongdoers, I hope they will do so without fear or favour. There have been occasions in the past when Suhakam’s findings on violations of human rights by State authorities have been largely ignored. As far as the forthcoming inquiry is concerned, I am looking forward to definitive answers on a couple of allegations in particular. Though the police are conducting their own investigations into the allegation by 11 doctors that they fired tear gas and chemicallaced water into the compounds of the Tung Shin and

Chinese Maternity hospitals, it is quite conceivable it will also be brought before Suhakam. Any breach of the sanctity of a hospital during a riot or a demonstration is a grave matter. Suhakam could also look into the contradictory claims by different parties on the death of one of the protesters. While investigating various claims and allegations, Suhakam will, I am sure, remain cognisant of the larger role and responsibility of the police in managing street demonstrations in any society. By the same token, the Malaysian public and the domestic media should not view Suhakam’s findings in isolation from the larger episode, including the undisguised partisan political motives behind July 9, and what they mean for the nation’s sovereignty and independence. Foreign NGOs and the foreign media cannot continue to ignore these legitimate concerns which are important for the majority of Malaysians. Dr Chandra Muzaffar

ing illegally. This phenomenon is the main reason why employers prefer to engage illegal workers instead of complying and paying all the levies, employment agency fees and application fees to simply losing all these fees when the workers are free to just leave and disappear. There is no use spending all these costly efforts to

register when there is no improvement in enforcement. It is just another exercise in futility, and a costly one to boot. Emotional farewell in space THE crew of the Atlantis bade a bittersweet farewell to astronauts on the International Space Station yesterday, wrapping up the final visit by a space shuttle to the orbiting outpost. As the shuttle age draws to a close after 37 dramatic rendezvous, their crews held a moving ceremony, exchanging embraces and kisses before shutting the hatches separating them for a final time at 1428 GMT. Astronauts then placed an American flag seal over the passageway separating the shuttle and the space station, in a poignant gesture to symbolise the end of one era of US spaceflight and the dawn of a new one. — AFP

Police interview Strauss-Kahn's ex-wife in Banon case POLICE have questioned the ex-wife of Dominique Strauss-Kahn, Brigitte Guillemette, as part of an investigation into a French writer's claims he tried to rape her in 2003, a legal source said yesterday. Guillemette is the godmother of journalist Tristane Banon, 32, who has lodged a formal complaint against the former International Monetary Fund chief currently awaiting his next court appearance in New York on a sex assault case there. Detectives from the violent crimes squad interviewed his ex-wife on Friday, a source said, confirming a report on the Le Point news magazine website. Banon's mother, Anne

Mansouret, has said recently in several press interviews that she had contacted Strauss-Kahn's ex-wife shortly after the alleged sexual assault on her daughter. Banon accuses StraussKahn of attacking her during an interview in February 2003 in a central Paris flat. She was herself questioned by police on July 11. Prosecutors will later decide whether to charge the 62-year-old Socialist politician, who was at one time expected to challenge Nicolas Sarkozy in next year's presidential election. Strauss-Kahn currently faces criminal charges in New York for allegedly trying to rape a 32-year-old hotel maid back in May, which he denies. — Reuters

Africa's HIV lifeline

Antiretroviral drugs provide new lease on life PATIENTS taking HIV drugs in Africa can expect to have a near-normal lifespan, although men are likelier to die far sooner than women, according to the biggest study of its kind, issued yesterday at the world conference on AIDS medicine. Researchers at the University of British Columbia and the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS in western Canada trawled through data for 22,315 people in Uganda aged at least 14 who had initiated antiretroviral therapy between 2000 and 2009. They were measured against life expectancy in Uganda which is around 55 years, a figure that increases with age after the individual has cleared key milestones such as death in infancy or risk behaviour in adolescence. Individuals in the study who were at the age of 20 when they began therapy

were statistically likely to live an additional 26.7 years, and at the age of 35 another 27.9 years. But this was the overall figure, and there were big differences between the sexes. Twenty-year-old males on HIV drugs could look to an additional 19.1 years of life, but female counterparts another 30.6 years. The gap was maintained at the age of 35, when an infected male under treatment could expect to live another 22 years but a woman could live 32.5 years more. The suspected reason for this is that men tend to access care at a later stage of disease than women, when they are already badly infected by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Previous research has already established that earlier treatment leads to stronger health as the immune system,

compromised by the AIDS pathogen, recovers. The study, which was also published in the US journal Annals of Internal Medicine, is the biggest analysis of life expectancy south of the Sahara. Although the probe only looked at data for Uganda, the authors say its basket of settings, rural, semi-rural and urban, and scant medical resources make it a snapshot for Africa as a whole. "The substantial life expectancy afforded by widespread access to (antiretroviral drugs) underscores the fact that HIV diagnosis and treatment in resource-limited setting should no longer be considered a death sentence," said lead investigator Edward Mills in a press release. "Instead, HIV-infected people should plan and prepare for a long and fulfilling life." — AFP

BANJUL (Gambia)

Gambia leader's vow GAMBIA'S President Yahya Jammeh said yesterday neither an election nor a coup could remove him from power, adding that it would take divine intervention for him to leave the post he has held for 17 years. The small West African nation will hold presidential elections on Nov 24, and Jammeh's comments will do little to ease charges from rights advocates who call him an erratic strongman with little regard for democracy or human rights. "Elections will not make me lose power nor will military coups make me lose grip of

power," Jammeh said at a rally at Brikamaba, east of Banjul. "It is only the Almighty Allah who made it possible for me to come to power in 1994, who can make this possible. So if anybody thinks that the opposition are going to win the forthcoming elections, it is a daydream," he added. Opposition parties complain that the election commission has not set aside enough time or media space for them to campaign across the country, which Jammeh has ruled harshly since he came to power in a 1994 coup. — Reuters

LONDON: Hacking Scandal

victims and families of soldiers killed in action have led to the paper's closure and the resignation of some of Murdoch's top lieutenants, as well as Britain's police chief. Cameron's judgment has been questioned after he hired the paper's former editor, Andy Coulson, as his Press chief and his relationship with Rebekah Brooks, who quit as chief executive of Murdoch's British newspaper arm, is now widely seen as too cosy. With a second senior police officer quitting yesterday and new developments in the story breaking by the hour, predicting where it may go next has become all but impossible. If Cameron is

unlucky, analysts say, it may define his premiership. Cameron, 44, has shortened a visit to Africa to deal with the crisis and said parliament would delay its summer recess to enable him to address lawmakers on the scandal. "There will be some pressure on Cameron but this goes well beyond him," said David Lea, western Europe analyst at London-based consultancy Control Risks. "This wraps in the whole establishment, the most serious allegations are probably those involving the police. It isn't going to bring the government down but it isn't going to be forgotten either." — Reuters

Kindle Textbook Rentals lets students pay based on how long they want to use textbooks, with periods ranging from 30 days to 360 days. Renting a digital version of textbooks on a Kindle for a month can save students as much as 80 per cent of the price of buying the works, according to

Amazon Kindle vice-president Dave Limp. "Students tell us that they enjoy the low prices we offer on new and used print textbooks. Cool Kuching Kuching Waterfront

By anu venugopal anu@mmail.com.my AMONG the many cities in Malaysia, many believe that Kuching is one of the coziest. While Kuching may be the largest city in the state of Sarawak, it is also one of the few cities that is best discovered on foot. Reserve a few days for the city and wander around the streets of the “Cat City”, as it is fondly known. Although many believe that the city got its name from the word ‘kuching’ (cat), it is more likely that it was derived from the Chinese word for port (cochin). Whatever the case may be, these days the name Kuching is often synonymous with the feline creatures. One of the best ways to enjoy what Kuching has to offer is by browsing through the classic shops and cosy restaurants and taking time to find out what the city has to offer. There are, however, many spots to visit to get to know Kuching and the surrounding areas better. Some of the must-see places to include on your itinerary is the one-stop Sarawak Cultural Village. Known as a living museum, the Sarawak Chinese Temple Cultural Village is the epitome spot of heritage of the major ethnic groups in Sarawak. Located 40 minutes driving time from Kuching, it showcases and celebrates the various lifestyles amidst 14 acres of

The west wing compromising of the Shell exhibition is where visitors can find out the history of petroleum in Sarawak, while the first floor offers a display of ethnographic artifacts including models of longhouses of the many ethnic groups in the state, musical instruments, various kinds of fish and animal traps as well as handicrafts. At the end of the cultural-centric visit, visitors will have the opportunity to witness Sarawak Museum cultural performance of songs, dances and entertainment in a 45-minute time-frame. For those who like to know the historical aspects of the state, head down to The Sarawak Museum. not miss going to the Cat Museum. Initially displayed for show for the first time at the National Museum, Kuala Lumpur in 1987, the cat artifacts were brought over to Kuching under the care of Sarawak Museum. It was displayed for the first time in August 1988, fitting after the city was proclaimed the Cat City. Today, the materials exhibited at the museum comes from all over the world and the cat friendly spot is known as a “Cat Information Centre.” No visit to Kuching would be complete without a walk

through the Kuching Waterfront. Vital in the founding on Kuching, its location on the Sarawak River was not only chosen for its strategic and commercial importance but also for its natural beauty. Now transformed into a charming landscaped esplanade, the Waterfront is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike who will get to sit, relax and experience the true beauty of a Sarawakian sunset. For another dose of culture, a visit to Tua Pek Kong Temple is essential. Located in Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, the century-old Chinese temple is the oldest temple in Kuching. The temple is particularly famous for its Wang Kang celebration to commemorate the spirit of the dead. While it is difficult to pinpoint the exact date it was built, it is supposed to have been built as early as 1843. Today, the temple is also a place for the Buddhists to offer prayers during the many festivals. Another prominent building in Kuching is The Astana. The variant of the usual spelling istana or palace, the beautiful historical structure lies regally across the river. Steeped with romantic romantic history, it is now the official residence of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri, the Governor of Sarawak. Built in 1870 by Rajah Charles Brooke the Astana is not open to the public. However, visitors can still stroll along its beautifully landscaped gardens, open to the public only during Hari Raya Aidilfitri and see the many ethnic artifacts on display. Perfect for a weekend gateway, away from the hustle and bustle of urban life, Kuching is one destination everyone needs to visit.

Journey through Selang

A SMALL enterprise in a suburban housing area in Banting, it is home to Esiah Kaimun, 59, who takes great pride in her dried flower craft, or specifically bunga tekap (pressed flower). Esiah claims few can match her skills in the craft she has practised since 1998. Being surrounded by greenery and the smell of fresh air, it is fitting to find a practitioner of bunga tekap here. The handicraft, which essentially is about gluing dried,

THE early morning congregation at the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque on a particular Saturday afternoon marked the prelude of plumbing Selangor’s rich crafting heritage. Under the programme Kembara Kraf Selangor 2011, some 40 people embarked on a threeday journey to learn about the varied handicrafts boasted by, but not necessarily exclusive to, this State. From the hand-woven, famous traditional batik that attracts tourist consumerism all

the way to the hand-sculpted ceramic pottery a family has practised for three generations, the programme highlighted certain parties that practise their distinct crafts skilfully in Selangor. Through the visitation to the realm of these handicraft practitioners, we’ve been introduced to their history, and for some crafts, the art of making them. Here’s a summary of what transpired during the programme, and of the places, as well as small businesses, visited.

Buluh Bentong Resort shrivelled parts of various flowers onto a base and then framing it up, apparently earns Esiah a decent income. The prices range from a few ringgit for small, non-framed items to thousands for huge wooden framed ones. These colourful fine arts can

potentially be appreciated for their vibrant aesthetics, but Esiah’s version has somewhat of a dull, lacklustre feel to it. There again, some enthusiasts like their bunga tekap in this form. For more information, visit the Laman Kraftani Facebook page at http://www.facebook. com/pages/LAMAN-KRAFTANI/334618956733 or call Esiah at 019 2534620.

Lyanne Batik DISCOVERING Selangor’s crafts would never be complete without setting eyes on batik, and the trip to Lyanne Batik in Pulau Meranti, Puchong, sated that aspect of the trip. A true believer in preserving Mother Nature, Lyanne Batik embodies this notion by adopting the use of natural dyes in colouring their batik handicrafts. Founded by Kamaliah Ismail, Lyanne Batik (which is a workshop, gallery, and factory rolled into one) is the manifestation of her aim of producing and supplying tasteful contemporary, ethnic and tribal Malaysian batik. Their modus operandi for

making the patterns for these quality works utilises one of two techniques: using a tjanting tool, a rod-like tool in which wax continuously flows out from, or copper block stamp, in which you literally dip and stamp wax onto the cloth for quick production. Calling these alluring works

of art the aptly named Art to Wear, Lyanne Batik caters to a market both local and abroad, and the geometrical patterns distinctive to batik have implemented on accessories, men and women’s wear, and paintings. To immerse yourself in Selangor’s unique batik both traditional and contemporary, make your way down to Jalan Puchong in Pulau Meranti. For more information, visit www.lyannebatik.com.my.

JALAN LOJI AIR is hardly a beautiful name for a place, but the exquisite bamboo house hidden within starkly contradicts the implications of its name. The Buluh Bentong Resort, as it’s called, is a wellmaintained estate that boasts a cosy bamboo home as its centrepiece. Owned by Mohd Ramadhan Abdul Hamid, he intended the abode to

serve as a private home for his family but seeing as they were uninterested, he transformed the place into the resort it currently is. Built back in 2008, this sturdy construct took a mere four people about 12 months to complete. The result is a stunning abode that any nature lover would relish in its confines. The interior has been tastefully decorated with a myriad of rattan furniture that exudes a contemporary vibe. The makers of the furniture, conveniently

enough, are located right next to the house. Design Principles (DP), a local furniture maker that specialises in quality rattan furniture, is a good example of utilising rattan, a material that’s typically attributed to traditional crafts, to create contemporary pieces. Basing their workshop right in the heart of Buluh Bentong Resort, Rahim Ismail, who owns the business, provided a live illustration of the makings of his company’s furniture. Using only the highestgrade rattan, these products of uncompromising quality have made their way into international markets. A particular range of furniture, that bases its concept on a whale, is a quaint, but ultimately beautiful set of functional art that would surely catch many eyes. If the interior decorations of the bamboo house were any indication, the contemporary bamboo furniture would harmonize perfectly with a nature/ modern hybrid home. To visit both Buluh Bentong Resort and DP workshop, head on over to Jalan Loji Air, Sungai Serai Batu 11, Hulu Langat.

A TWO-DAY event on June 25 and 26, the bazaar, which was in the spirit of Hari Kraf Selangor, or Selangor Crafts Day, became an avenue for an array of miscellaneous crafts to be displayed. From Esiah’s pressed flower crafts to Islamic calligraphy, there was enough variation to draw interest towards this event about promoting Selangor crafts. Exco member Elizabeth Wong was present to officially unveil the Kraf Selangor logo and to provide her thoughts

Ramadas ALONG Jalan Teluk Piah Kanan is this small enterprise, owned by V.N. Ramadas, hence the business’s name. Dealing in the fine art of ceramic craftsmanship, the Ramadas business is one that has persevered through three generations since his granddad arrived from India. V.N. Ramadas himself has been getting his hands dirty making earthenware for the past 42 years, ever since he became an alumna from high school. The family-owned business started due to

the abundance of relevant materials, and 50 other families followed suit in working with clay. As of now, however, that number has dwindled to a tenth of that. The clay used is known as ball clay, is relatively rare form of clay that is sourced from Bestari Jaya. With it, they

fashion ceramic cups, cooking pots, even fountains and tandors. According to one of the workers, she makes about 2,000 cups daily from 8am to 6pm. Want to get your hands dirty too? Perhaps, if you ask nicely, Ramadas might just let you have a go with the pottery wheel. Be warned though: it’s not as easy as it looks.

Ferrovase Enterprise WHILE Japan popularly uses jute rope in the art of bondage, over in Selangor the same rope is utilised in a more ... humanitarian manner. on the local craft industry, specifically Selangor. So, just a footnote, do take your time to absorb some of our cultural heritage by exploring the Selangor’s craftsmanship.

Kampung Sungai Bumbun AS opposed to Lyanne Batik and Design Principles incorporation of modern philosophy in traditional designs, the aboriginal people of Kampung Sungai Bumbun has a steep incline towards true traditional craftsmanship. The orang asli residents of Pulau Carey, collectively known as the Mah Meri, are known for their wooden cravings of otherworldly entities. These sculptures, which are made from type of hardwood called Nyerih Batu, possess an eerie, forbidding vibe no thanks to the carved fangs and evil looking eyes. Though some collectors may find these curios worth the expense of thousands of ringgit. The sculptures have a deep heritage to them, and are carved just not for aesthetic purposes but to “enlist” the aid of the entity depicted

to solve problems or provide protection. For instance, for fishermen venturing out to sea, they would bring along them the

carving of a Moyang Sauh, or Anchor Spirit, with the idea that it’ll protect them. So if the Mah Meri’s tribal carvings sound enticing to you, give the village a brief venture, specifically Pusat Kraf Orang Asli, at Pulau Carey, Kuala Langat.

THE Kembara Kraf 2011 programme culminated with a trip to Mahkota Songket on day three, a subsidiary of Atur Sdn Bhd that weaves songket, type of intricate and painstakingly made brocade native to Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei. Leena Hassan, 27, the manager of Mahkota Songket , welcomed the group into the songket-making facility, where the first floor used mechanised sowing machines, while the second floor used a more traditional wooden construct, known as the kek machine. The floral and

other geometrical patterns require such skill and patience it takes around a month or more to complete one songket, depending on the complexity of the embellishments. Starting this business since around 2001, Leena making this beautiful, and costly, fabric is extremely tedious to say the least. One can argue, however, that the end result justifies the hardship of making it.

isn’t much of a secret besides the twisted of the rope before gluing it together with the other bits and pieces. Frankly, out of all the other crafts, this hardly feels traditional, or even special. However, if you beg to differ, then feel free to head over to Kampung Permatang, Kuala Selangor to see what’s so special.

Funny ugly man

Title: Bete de Jour — The Intimate Adventures of An Ugly Man Author: Stan Cattermole Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Rating: 8/10

sudoku

sudoku

FIRSTLY, don’t let the title fool you. It’s not just about the sexual exploits of an ugly man. It is much more than that. Stan Cattermole is a funny, loving man who is looking for love. Unfortunately, his obese physique and “face like a bag of elbows” makes it difficult for him to have conversations with a woman, what more going out on a date. After years of beating himself up over this less than grand looks, he finally is determined to find himself someone to love, even if this means he has to go on a diet and lose 30 pounds. Hilarious, shocking and tender all at the same time, Stan’s tale is one that manages to pull on the heartstrings of anyone who has ever had issues with weight, self-image and love (meaning everyone). A real page-turner, this book is one that you can read over and over without getting bored. Just as Stan says in his introduction of the book, “be warned, this book has a happy ending.”

Time for change Title: Make Every Second Count Author: Robert W. Bly Publisher: Advantage Quest Publications Rating: 5/10 MAKE Every Second Count is a good book for busy professionals looking for an avenue for success with less stress. It does not only give tips on how to maximise time by setting priorities, creating useful schedules and overcoming the age old problem of procrasti-

nation — it also gives insights to boost energy levels and productivity with proper diet, exercise and sleep.

While technology may be the cause of the need for finishing deadlines and achieving a successful day at the office, Bly also gives pointers as to how to use the ever-changing technology to enable you to manage information and communication more effectively and efficiently. There is a lot of information that one can get from the book, depending on each person’s interests and goals. The good thing about the book is that one can skip chapters if necessary and go on to the important aspects that are more effective and appealing.

Perfect your sales techniques Title: Hired — How to Use Sales Techniques to Sell Yourself on Interviews Author: Elinor Stutz Publisher: Advantage Quest Publications Rating: 6/10 EVER thought of equating getting a job to the likes of making a sale? According to Stutz, both these activities are pretty similar. Making a sale of any type is about being familiar with and understanding the needs of another person. Likewise, securing a job shows that one understands what

the company and potential employers need. If you approach getting a job like you are about to make a sale, Stutz believes you will have a better chance of getting the job you are eyeing for and that the entire process of securing it is actually a sales cycle. Even if you're a sceptic about this "sales approach" at first, everything would begin to make sense after reading a few chapters into the book. It gives one tips about handling interviews and how to change your mindset, attitude and relationship towards selling

the brand (you). It also gives a questionnaire at the end to help one ascertain career goals and needs, a valuable insight to the career process.

BANDAR UTAMA: FOOTBALL/ MALAYSIA V CHELSEA

I have seen them in training and they all have the potential to do more than what they have been doing — Villas-Boas

A clean slate Villas-Boas says Chelsea have the potential to excel By VIJHAY VICK vijhayvick@mmail.com.my

CHELSEA manager Andre Villas-Boas has put his foot down and told his players what he expects of them — and that is to step up a level. The former Porto manager insists while he is happy with the players, he has his own ideas and will look to implement them. "I have seen them in training and they all have the potential to do more than what they have been doing," he said. Villas-Boas, 33, also said it is for the players to show him what they can offer to him and not the other way around. "It is good that we are

spending time together on this tour. For me I've seen how they played last season but the players can start on a new slate." He refused to comment on the possibility of Tottenham's midfield ace Luka Modric moving to Stamford Bridge. He feels there is no urgency on the matter but hopes he can sort out his team before the start of the season as he wants to have his squad ready by them. Meanwhile, midfielder Frank Lampard only had praises for his new boss. Lampard believes there won't be any problem having a younger manager.

"His age is irrelevant. Looking at his achievements at Porto, we know he is of quality," said the England international. Lampard believes VillaBoas' method will have similarity to Jose Mourinho's era at Chelsea, where the Blues were dominant in the English Premier League. Villas-Boas has worked under the "Special One" at Porto, Chelsea, and Inter Milan before taking the hot seat at Porto. "We know what he expects but we have been told there are basic principles which players must already have," said Lampard.

against Chelsea but will only use 20 or 21 players for the match. Kim Swee will rotate his players and is looking to give each of his player 30 minutes of play, just like Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas.

"When selecting the senior players, I only chose the ones with the right attitude and those I feel can have a chance playing for the senior team," he said. The Harimau Muda A coach is hoping his players will be able to make the most out of the senior players who have joined them. He wants them to learn and gain experience. "I have few players who are captain material but I chose Norhafiz Zamani Misbah to lead the team as the young ones can learn from the defender's experience," said Kim Swee. After playing the Blues, the national Olympic squad will travel to Slovakia on Friday. Kim Swee is hoping to play four to six matches there.

Kim Swee: Chelsea match will give exposure to players

03-7495 1273

MANY may see the Malaysian selection's comprising a bulk of national Olympic squad and several seniors against Chelsea on Thursday at National Stadium in Bukit Jalil as preparation for the Olympics qualifiers but not national Under-23 coach Ong Kim Swee (pic). "If it was a preparation match then I should be playing another Under-23 team," said Kim Swee. "This match is to give exposure to the players." Furthermore Kim Swee has lost seven players to the national team, who are preparing for the World Cup qualifiers against Singapore in the republic on Saturday. He stressed he will not favour his Under-23 players when naming his team

PETALING JAYA: FREESTYLE FOOTBALL

Express yourself Niche pastime slowly gaining popularity By HARESH DEOL haresh@mmail.com.my

EASY DOES IT: Nam the Man in action — Pic: RAZAK GHAZALI

FREESTYLE football is set to make an impression in the region. While this form of art has been around for decades, it is only recently that freestyle football is slowly, but surely getting the due recognition it deserves. Yet, there are those who believe freestyle football is more of a sideshow. "Those who are part of it will know it's not just a fancy trick. Football is a game while freestyle football is a form of art. Give it some time and people will realise what it is all about," said Freestyle Football Federation ( F F F ) president and chief executive officer Dan Wood. "There are about 200 freestyl e rs ma k i ng a decent living while there's a huge following, especially in the South E ast Asi an region." The

sport has a following in 51 countries across the globe. Several household names such as Brazilians Ronaldo and R ona l d i n ho have used freestyle moves in their games. W o o d

SHANGHAI: DIVING

China gold rush as sweep bid gathers pace CHINA doubled their gold medal haul at the world championships' diving events yesterday as their bid for a historic clean sweep quickly gathered pace. Chen Ruolin and Wang Hao dominated the women's 10m platform synchro, shortly after Li Shixin and He Min's brave one-two in the men's 1m springboard, giving China all four diving titles so far. Chen won her third straight world title in the event after amassing 362.58 p oints with Wang, with Australian Olympic silver-medallist Melissa Wu and Alexandra Croak second and Germans

Christin Steuer and Nora Subschinski third. "I think the top three teams all could have won, it just depends on who performs the best," said Chen. "I never think too much during the competition, or my performance will be affected." After three days of competition China have won not only every title, but also every heat at Shanghai's openair Crescent Lagoon venue, putting them on course to become the first country to win all 10 diving gold medals. In the men's event, Li Shixin stormed back from a ragged

dive three to clinch first place, while compatriot He Min clawed his way from fourth to second spot, leap-frogging Germany's Pavlo Rozenberg with his very last plunge. Li's messy entry on the third of his six dives, a reverse 2.5 somersault in the pike position, looked to open the door to Rozenberg. But the 23-year-old nailed his last three dives to finish with 463.90 points. Meanwhile He saved his best for last as he pulled off a precision inward 2.5 somersault in the pike for 81.60 points, pushing Rozenberg into the bronze medal posi-

tion. The climax of the competition was briefly interrupted when Mexico's Daniel Islas crashed his right foot painfully against the board during his final dive, and left the pool deck in a wheelchair. — AFP GOLDEN DIVE: China's Wang Hao and Chen Ruolin compete in the final of the women's 10m synchronised platform diving event — AFPpic

explained the art of freestyle originated from this region through sepak takraw. "You'd be surprised that a huge bulk of those on our forums and websites originate from this region." Wo o d , t o g e t h e r w i t h two prominent freestylers, Nguyen Hoai-Nam, better known as "Nam the Man", and Abbas Farid, visited The Malay Mail yesterday ahead of the World Freestyle Fo ot b a l l C h ampi ons h ip launch today. Nguyen and Abbas are professional freestylers — having worked on several projects and music videos in the past — and will be playing judges for the world championship. The inaugural event will be held at Sunway Pyramid from September 16-18 with some 16 freestyle artists from all over the world set to compete. "This is our way of showing how serious freestyle is. More people should pick up a ball and get involved. They should come ov e r a n d w at c h the championship which promises to be exciting and spectacular," he added.

BARCELONA: BOWLING By VIJHAY VICK vijhayvick@mmail.com.my

Mission accomplished KNOWN to the rest of the field as world-beaters, Team Malaysia ended their European tour with much success. This was evident when Zulmazran Zulkif li and Zandra Aziela (pic) did the country proud by emerging fourth and fifth respectively in the Barcelona Open yesterday. Despite missing the cut of making into the top three step-ladder finals, Zulmazran's performance spoke volumes of his fighting qualities as he totalled 2514 pin falls. However, it was Zandra who stole the limelight with 2497 pin falls. The petite bowler walked tall after being acclaimed the b est-ranked woman bowler in the championship when she finished fifth overall, blazing the lanes with a series of high scoring games. "I feel great and, as always, it has been an honour to bowl among the best European and other world class men bowlers,” said Zandra. "This achievement gives me the confidence to strive for more in the up coming tournaments. I hope to be chosen for the World Women's Championships in Hong Kong.." Mika Koivuniemi of Finland was the runaway leader with 2694 pin falls, with Robert Andersson of Sweden finishing second with 2573 pin falls. Martin Larsen of Sweden was third with 2570 pin falls. This success for Team Malaysia follows top three finishes achieved at the San Marino Open last week.

McIlroy splits with long-time girlfriend

US OPEN champion Rory Mc I l r o y ' s r e l a t i o n s h i p with his girlfriend Holly Sweeney (pic) is over, the Northern Irishman's management team said this morning. "Rory McIlroy's longterm relationship with Holly Sweeney came to an amicable end before the British

Open," an International Sports Management spokesman (ISM) said. The 22-year-old McIlroy, who won the US Open last month, finished down the field at the British Open yesterday in a share of 25th place. The tournament was won by his ISM stablemate and fellow countryman Darren Clarke.

The pair had a period apart earlier in the year, but 20-year-old student Sweeney, a cheerleader for the Ulster rugby team, was at Augusta to greet him after his hopes of winning The Masters were crushed by a closing 80. Sweeney met the world No. 4 when she was 15 and while playing with friends

Bleary-eyed Clarke happy to party on

DARREN CLARKE promised to celebrate his British Open triumph long and h ard, an d t h e p opu l ar Northern Irishman proved as good as his word yesterday. Speaking to journalists for the traditional morningafter photo opportunity, a bleary-eyed Clarke admitted he had spent the night partying and had not had an opportunity to get any sleep. "I've looked at the trophy all night and sort of semi figured out it's mine," said Clarke, who slurred some of his words as he clutched the famous Auld Claret jug. "I probably won't get any sleep until tomorrow at some stage. Have to enjoy it when you can. "I had quite a few pints

and quite a few glasses of red wine and it all continued until about 30 minutes ago. "It's been a very good night." Clarke stopped short of his threat to fill the Claret jug with Guinness. "I'm a little bit of a traditionalist. I feel a bit funny about putting stuff in the Claret Jug that shouldn't be in there," he said. "There's nothing in it as yet. That may not be the case as the week goes by!" "I have 294 (text) messages and the writing is far too small for me to look at them in this state, so I may look at them tomorrow at some stage and figure them out." Clarke also revealed he had finally had the opportunity to speak to his two

young sons, Tyrone and Conor, who lost their mother Heather to breast cancer in 2006. Clarke, who said yesterday that he believed his late wife had been watching over him, dedicated his first Major title to his children. "Tyrone was very pleased, very proud — he said he was going to tell everybody his dad was Open Champion. "Conor wanted to know what he could spend all the money on. "So it was a huge difference between the two, but they were both very happy." Clarke meanwhile said he hoped Sunday's win would elevate him into the running for the Ryder Cup captaincy at some point in the next few years.

"It is definitely still an ambition at some stage," he said. "I think at if I get the opportunity to be Ryder Cup captain, possibly I may have a little bit more respect from players having been a Major champion." Although Clarke's ranking points from his Open victor y won't count towards qualification for next year's Ryder Cup in Chicago, he believed Sunday's win will have put him on captain Jose Maria Olazabal's radar. " Un f o r t u n at e l y t h e s e points don't qualify for the team next year, but in saying that, I am a Major champion, so Jose Maria will be paying attention, as he always does, so we'll see where that brings me," he said. — AFP

Ambitious Baku joins WTA host cities club AZERBAIJAN, flush with gas dollars and keen to boost its image, yesterday joined the club of former Soviet republics holding top tennis tournaments as the first ever WTA Baku Cup started in the capital. The tennis tournament in Baku, organised under the patronage of the late president Heidar Aliyev's foundation, became the third WTA event after Moscow's Kremlin Cup and the Tashkent Open in Uzbekistan. The Azerbaijan tennis federation's initiative to hold the elite women's tennis event was also backed by some of the country's biggest banks and the State-run oil company Socar (State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic). The idea of hosting the tennis tournament also received

the full backing of the country's current President Ilham Aliyev, who said he was expecting serious development of sports in Azerbaijan in the near future. "There were some sports traditions in Azerbaijan in the Soviet era but our athletes failed to achieve any serious success at that time," Aliyev said at the opening ceremony of Baku tennis academy's

newly built 3,000-seat court, which will host the WTA event. "Now we're changing the situation to better create opportunities for bringing on our young sports stars throughout the country," he added. "I believe our tennis players will now be able to receive the precious experience of playing against the world's top tennis players to improve the level of their own playing in the near future. "The hosting of the international WTA competition in Baku is a very important fact," the president added. "It should seriously increase the popularity of tennis in Azerbaijan."

Brazil on right track despite Copa exit

BRAZIL coach Mano Menezes insisted this morning there was no need to panic after his side lost their Copa America quarterfinal shoot-out to Paraguay yesterday. The media were scathing after a poor match ended goalless following extra-time and lambasted the auriverde for contriving to miss all four of their penalties. "I know you live and die by results," said Menezes. "But these will come if we continue on the path we are on." The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) will allow him to stay at the helm through to 2014, president Ricardo Teixeira said in an overnight statement from Rio.

"There is not much time to cry over the Copa America elimination," said Teixeira, adding that Brazil had been unlucky to crash out. Teixeira said he had phoned Menezes to underline that the "project to renew the Brazilian team with the principal objective — the 2014 World Cup — remains in place". Menezes said the Paraguay game had to be forgotten. "Of course if we keep raking over the four missed penalties that saw us go out then we will not talk about the game we played, which marked an evolution in the team and the squad," Menezes told a news conference. The team had struggled

to draws against Venezuela and Paraguay in the first phase before an improved performance saw them beat Ecuador 4-2 and allowed them to qualify for the last eight as Group B winners. However, hope among fans that that improvement would continue into the knockout stages was quickly crushed and overall the impression left was of a patchy side with some fine approach play but a lack of end product. Menezes did insist, however, that they were on the right track to shine where he wants them to — at the 2014 World Cup they will host. "The players are preparing to create the Brazil side which we all want.

"They are valued, respected and require respect at a most difficult moment. "There can be criticism but it must be accompanied by respect and when that is lacking then we cannot reach the place where we need to be." He admitted that the modern game had seen smaller fry such as Venezuela catch up the big fish. "Football today is evolving very much. When people talked about (Brazil not beating) Venezuela there was much criticism. But now Venezuela are through to the semifinals. That is no accident." And he said that Brazil we re v i c t i ms of w ant ing to stay true to their

attacking philosophy. "It is different to defend for 90 minutes than to attack for 90 minutes. Uruguay will never play like Brazil — and Brazil will never play like Uruguay," who adopted a more cautious approach to see off Argentina, also on penalties. Menezes had previously blamed the pitch for the spotkick fiasco but admitted there was really no excuse for a top side to miss four penalties out of four. He concluded, however, that the Copa experience would serve as just another section on the learning curve leading to the World Cup, when failure really will not be tolerated. — AFP

Japan had 'something bigger' on their side, says Solo GOALKEEPER Hope Solo (pic) had kept the United States alive in the World Cup tournament with one scintillating performance after another but she knew she was up against more than just 11 women from Japan yesterday. The never-say-die team f rom Japan played their hearts out and stunne d the dominating Americans in the final, winning 3-1 on penalties after twice rallying with late equalisers first in regulation time and then

in extra-time. "We lost to a great team, we really did," Solo was quoted saying on the USA team website (www.ussoccer.com). "I truly believe that something bigger was pulling for this team," Solo added, referring to an outpouring of support around the world for the team in the wake of the tsunami disaster. Japan played with aweinspiring energy throughout the tournament and upset one giant after another — including defending champions and hosts Germany in the quarterfinals and perennial powerhouse Sweden in the semifinals.

The Malay Mail Tuesday 19 JuLY, 2011

Tw i c e y e s t e r d a y t h e Japanese women — all of whom were at least a head shorter than the Americans — found ways to get the ball post Solo with dramatic late efforts. Aya Miyama equalised in the 81st minute to send the match into extra-time and captain Homara Sawa equalised again at 2-2 in the 117th minute. "As much as I've always wanted this, if there were any other team I could give this to it would have to be Japan," Solo added. "I'm happy for them and they do deserve it." Meanwhile striker Abby

Wambach said it's no use for them to drown in their sorrows. "This has been an emotional roller coaster," Wambach said. "We'll go back, play on our respective teams in our league. And the Olympics are around the corner. We'll move on." Wambach, who won the Silver Ball as the tournament’s second-best player and the bronze boot for finishing third in scoring, is already prepared to move on and focus on winning her second Olympic gold medal in 2012 should the team qualify for the tournament. — Agencies

JAPAN captain Homare Sawa (pic) not only went home with the World Cup and Golden Boot as the tournament's top scorer, but she was also named the Player-of-theTournament as well. Sawa scored five goals and assisted on another to lead Japan to their first Women's World Cup title, including a goal in the 117th minute that sent yesterday's final into penalty kicks. A pair of Americans, forward Abby Wambach and goalkeeper Hope Solo, finished second and third respectively in the voting for the award. Wambach scored a goal in each of the USA's last four games, while Solo was also named the best goalkeeper at the tournament after allowing just two goals during the group stage and making a key save in the quarterfinal win over Brazil during the shootout. Australia's Caitlin Foord was named the best young player at the tournament, while Japan also received the Fifa Fair Play Award. Sawa had the night of her life in Frankfurt after Japan defeated the United States on penalties in the final. With her country still recovering from the destructive earthquake that killed over 15,000 people and left many more homeless four months ago, the Tokyo-native realises the likely positive boost to morale from the country's first women's World Cup win. She says the fans have been steadfast in their support. "I also want to thank all of our fans, for their great support," Sawa told goal.com. "I have now played with the national team for 18 years, and this is the biggest success for us. I can't believe it. This team is very united. That is the reason why I could get my awards." — Agencies

Viva Venezuela Giant killers now aim for Copa after stunning Chile

VENEZUELA goalkeeper Renny Vega says their aim has always been to win the Copa America. The Venezuelans, not given much hope of even surviving the first round, stunned Chile 2-1 at Estadio del Bicentenario yesterday to book a place in the semifinals for the first time in their history. "We are in the top four and now we hope to reach the final. For many it is a surprise, but I say Venezuela have entered with great humility and deserve respect. Our dream is always to win the Copa," said Vega, who made several superb saves to frustrate the formidable Chileans. He also dedicated the win to all Venezuelans. "Our fans know we are improving by the day and now there are only two hurdles to be champions. We deserve this, we worked hard for it, we are making a huge sacrifice by being locked up and away from our families, we are proud and we want people in our country to feel proud to be Venezuelans." Elano blames terrible pitch for Brazil's exit BRAZIL midfielder Elano (pic) criticised the pitch at Estadio Ciudad de La Plata, and believes it had a major role to play in their shock penalty shoot-out defeat by Paraguay yesterday. The champions were the dominant force in the match with Paraguay goalkeeper Justo Villar keeping his side in the match with a string of fine saves as it ended 0-0 after extra-time. In the shoot-out, Brazil amazingly failed to score even once as Paraguay prevailed 2-0. "It is hard to explain these

things. I feel great sorrow. I think I was hampered by a terrible pitch," said Elano, who missed the first spot-kick. Experienced goalkeeper Julio Cesar echoed Elano's sentiments regarding the surface, with the area around the penalty spot proving particularly treacherous. "You can see the referee was there to check it out. The grass gave off a little. Many people will say that I'm using it as an excuse, because the field was also bad for Paraguay," said the Inter Milan star. "I think we now have to move on. Not everyone who

plays the better football come out with victory. We're very sad to be eliminated." Strikers Alexandre Pato and Neymar cited "luck" and the pitch as the reasons for their elimination. "Luck was on Paraguay's side. The pitch was bad, was terrible. But we tried until the end, try to do what we had to do and we fought," said Pato. "This happens and we have to take this defeat as a lesson for the future." Neymar said Brazil created a lot of chances but did not capitalise on them. "Luck was not with us

as well. And unfortunately, Paraguay were better during the shoot-out," said the Santos star. Another attacker, Robinho, said Brazil must now focus on winning the 2014 World Cup, which they are hosting. "Now what we can do is to work harder and win the World Cup in our country," he said. However, Robinho felt they did have a good outing in the Copa. The Brazilians drew with Venezuela (0-0) and Paraguay (2-2) and beat Ecuador 4-2 in the group stages.

delight at their success — a historic occasion in the nation's football history. The coach hailed his fighting players for their achievement and warned he had no plans to finish their giantkilling act.

"We trained to play six matches and we did it, despite the fact that nobody took us into consideration," said Farias. "Venezuela have played against three (South Africa World Cup teams) and Ecuador, and haven't lost once. "Today (yesterday) we beat Chile who impressed in South Africa. We proved that we can compete with the rest of South America." The 38-year-old said his dreams would not end in the semifinals and that his Vinotinto heroes are already looking towards the future. "The players are not content with this and they are hoping to continue going forward. This experience also leaves us well-placed thinking about the next World Cup qualifiers, since we aim to play in the Brazil World Cup in 2014," said Farias. Venezuela have yet to play in the World Cup Finals. But with with the success yesterday, they are guaranteed to beat their previous best finishes in a Copa which was fifth in 1967 out of a total of eight contenders, and sixth in 2007 when they were the hosts.

Life goes on for Chile, says Borghi CHILE coach Claudio Borghi (pic) insisted he would look at the 2011 Copa America in a positive fashion — despite the disappointment of going out at the quarterfinal stage yesterday when they went down 2-1 to Venezuela. The Chileans had many chances against Venezuela, but could not take advantage and finished on the wrong end. Os w a l d o Vi z c ar ron d o and Gabriel Cichero scored for the Venezuelans while Humberto Suazo had briefly raised Chilean hopes with an equaliser late in the game. Borghi lamented his team's misfortune in going out but said he left the tournament in a good frame of mind. "I don't believe in luck, I believe in being able to do what you have to or not.

Chile always wanted to win. They always had the conviction that they could win the game. I'm going home sad, but not disappointed," said the Argentine. B orghi also dismissed claims that he had taken Venezuela lightly, saying he never thought Cesar Farias' team would be "easy rivals". He also pointed to his team's disadvantage at set-pieces — putting it down to "the smaller average stature" of his players.

'Old Lady' snubbed Inter to keep 2006 Scudetto, Juventus to take legal action

INTER MILAN were confirmed as 2006 Serie A champions this morning after Italy's football federation (FIGC) said they did not have the authority to revoke the decision which stripped Juventus of the title. Juventus had called for the Scudetto award to be revoked following allegations of involvement by Inter in the Calciopoli corruption scandal. The Turin team won the Scudetto in 2004/05 and 2005/06 but were stripped of the titles for their involvement in the scandal and demoted to Serie B, with the latter championship handed to Inter. "The federal council (executive committee) has turned down Juventus' petition regarding the 2006 Scudetto with a declaration that it is not competent to revoke it," said the FIGC in a statement. The FIGC explained the decision by saying that Juventus had been penalised by a disciplinary board which it did not have the power to overrule. The decision was widely expected, coming after FIGC lawyers decided this month not to pursue Juventus's

Aguero's fate to be decided this week SERGIO "KUN" AGUERO'S agent confirmed the Atletico Madrid striker will sort out his future this week — amid talk of an impending move to Manchester City. City manager Roberto Mancini confirmed his interest in Argentine ace Aguero over the weekend as he seeks a replacement for Carlos Tevez. Tevez is poised for a move away from Eastlands after the club accepted a bid from Brazilian club Corinthians for their skipper and now City are expected to step up their interest in Aguero. Real Madrid and Juventus have also been linked with a move for Aguero, who informed Atletico Madrid of his desire to leave Vicente Calderon this summer. Aguero's agent Hernan Reguera admits the striker's future will be resolved soon, now that Argentina are no longer in the Copa America. "He wanted the Copa

America to end to sit down and talk. During this week everything will be settled," Reguera told Ole. "Aguero has made a lot of important things for Atletico. He renewed his contract when he was one year away from becoming a free agent, he has played over 200 matches, he spent two years without vacations. "He is thankful to the fans and to the club's board. We have been talking about this for two months. "I talk to the club's chiefs on a daily basis, and if it was hard for them to accept at the beginning, they have agreed and there are no problems." Reguera insists Aguero's decision to leave Atletico has nothing to do with money and that he wants a new challenge. "In seven days the subject will be closed, but this has nothing to do with money. He wants his career to grow."

court investigating the case heard evidence of attempts involving Inter to influence the selection of referees. Juventus threatened to take their cause elsewhere, stating the ruling was "a long way from re-establishing fairness". "The club has given the go ahead for their lawyers to explore the best means of proceeding in international

and administrative law," the club said in a statement. "At the same time the management and their lawyers are evaluating the economical damages such behaviour has caused." Abete, who led the FIGC executive committee in voting 20 to one against revoking Inter's title with two abstentions, said Juventus were free

to take their case to other bodies. "I don't believe taking it to the courts would be the best choice but I'd respect the decision," said Abete. "The credibility of the system is tied to respect for the rules." Milan, Fiorentina, Lazio and Reggina were also docked points for influencing the appointment of favoured referees in the scandal. In May, a Napoli court ruled that Luciano Moggi, Juventus' former general manager who had been at the centre of the 2006 scandal, should face five years and eight months in jail if found guilty of corruption. Moggi was banned for life by the FIGC last month. Since Calciopoli broke, Juventus, Italy's best supported club with a record 27 titles have failed to hit their previous heights, finishing outside the European places in seventh position last season. Inter, meanwhile, have entered another golden age, winning four more titles since 2006 along with last year's Champions League and Club World championship. — Reuters

Just days after Arsenal supposedly met with the teenager’s agent, City have now thrown their name in the hat along with Chelsea, who are the only other club believed to have made a concrete offer. With Carlos Tevez and Emmanuel Adebayor set to leave Eastlands this summer, Roberto Mancini is already working on recruiting potential replacements, and Lukaku has been identified as a main target. Inter Milan and newly-rich Paris Saint Germain are also in the hunt, but the 18-year-old’s next destination looks increasingly likely to be the Premier League considering the level of interest.

TIME TO STEP UP: Michael Carrick (left) believes the team must band together to replace the retired Scholes (right) — GETTYpic

MIDFIELDER Michael Carrick believes Manchester United's players need to take a collective responsibility in replacing Paul Scholes. Manager Alex Ferguson has already spoken of the difficulties involved in finding an alternative to a player he regards as one of the best he has ever worked with. Ferguson has played down the potential of signing Inter Milan's Wesley Sneijder as a replacement, w hi le To t t e n h a m ' s L u k a Modric and Arsenal's Samir Nasri appear bound for elsewhere. Carrick accepts even if Ferguson is successful in landing a target, it would be impossible to carry out the playmaking role completely. And the England international feels the best way of overcoming Scholes' departure is for everyone to do their bit. " L o s i ng a pl aye r l i ke S choles is a loss — he brings so much to the team," Carrick told United's official website. "He was a world-class player, so you have to compensate in other ways. We

have done that in the past — we lost Cristiano Ronaldo a few years ago and people didn't think we'd get over it. "But different players step up — maybe it is not one player but we share the responsibility." It has been a summer of change at Old Trafford. Along with Scholes, goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has followed Gary Neville into retirement. Owen Hargreaves has been released while Wes Brown and John O'Shea have gone to Sunderland. All six are in their 30s, triggering a massive regeneration that leaves Carrick one of the seniors, with five years' service under his belt. Still, it has done nothing to shake the 29-year-old's confidence that United can become the first club to win a 20th title next May. "We are always confident, especially after winning the league," he said. "The manager always strengthens when he feels it is right and in positions he feels needs strengthening. "We trust him totally with that and we believe we have a chance this season."

Gervinho adds more firepower to the Gunners ARSENAL have completed the signing of striker Gervinho (pic) from Lille for an undisclosed fee — believed to be in the region of £10.6m (RM51m). The Gunners announced last week a deal had been agreed for the Ivory Coast international and the paperwork has now been approved, with Gervinho penning a long-term contract. "It's a great feeling to be an Arsenal player," Gervinho told Arsenal's website. "I'm very happy. I've always dreamed to play for this club. I've achieved this dream now and I am so happy. It's one of the most beautiful days of my life." Gervinho cited Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger as a key factor in his decision to move to London. "I'm very happy to have the chance to work with Wenger. I came here because I believe he

can improve my game and help me reach another level, but the most important thing for me is that I bring a lot to the team for whom I'm playing." The 24-year-old played a key role in Lille's Ligue 1 and Coupe de France double last season, scoring 18 goals in all competitions. That took his tally to 36 goals in 93 appearances during two seasons with the club, while he has been capped 27 times by the Ivory Coast, scoring six times. Like Premier League stars Kolo Toure, Yaya Toure, S a l om on Ka l ou an d Arsenal's Emmanuel Eboue, Gervinho began his career with ASEC Mimosas in Abidjan. Wenger was attracted by his versatility. "Gervinho is a player that can play in a number of positions up front. He can play on the right, on the

left and through the middle. He has qualities that I find very important, like his movement off the ball. He has the qualities we like technically. "He is good one against one, he

is strong and was the best provider in the French league with assists and he scored 15 goals. I think he is a very good addition to the squad." Gervinho will immediately join up with his new teammates for pre-season training.

If he completes his move to Rennes, Mavinga will miss the beginning of the new Ligue 1 season as he will be with the France squad at the Under-20 World Cup in Colombia. given: Hopes for a fresh start with Villa — GETTYpic

ASTON VILLA have completed the signing of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given from Manchester City on a five-year contract, the Premier League club said this morning. The 35-year-old Given had slipped behind England’s Joe Hart in the pecking order at City and played only a handful of first-team matches last season. “Aston Villa are a huge football club and I’m really excited to be joining,” Given told the club’s web-

site (www.avfc.co.uk). “I’m looking forward to training and playing with the players here. They’re a good bunch of lads, very talented and I know several of them already which will help.” Given made his name during 12 years at Newcastle United in which he made over 400 appearances before joining City in 2009 for around £6 million (RM29.1m). “Obviously, I’m also excited to be working with

Alex McLeish and it’s going to be a fresh start for everybody at the club this season,” he continued. “It’s also a new challenge and one I’m eager to embrace. My aim is to impress the Aston Villa supporters with my performances and I can’t wait really to get started.” Villa, whose first-choice keeper Brad Friedel moved to Tottenham Hotspur at the end of last season, paid around £3.5 million for Given, according to news-

paper reports. Given, Ireland’s most capped player with 113 international appearances, became Villa manager Alex McLeish’s first signing since taking over last month. “Everybody who has watched him perform over many years in the Premier League will know his pedigree, so we believe we have secured the services of one of the best goalkeepers in the business,” McLeish said. — Agencies
