The wait’s over as Energy Commission finds contractor ‘at fault’ for Tmn Batu Tiga playground lamp post that electrocuted boy on March 19 and will present probe report to A-G’s Chambers

AFTER six months, the Energy Commission finally wrapped up investigations into the accidental electrocution of 11-year-old Muhammad Naquiddin Mohd Marzuki by a faulty playground lamp post in Taman Batu Tiga, Shah Alam, on March 19. Energy Commission chief executive officer Ahmad Fauzi Hasan, who confirmed this with The Malay Mail yesterday, said the findings would be handed over to the Attorney-General’s Chambers soon for further action. It was reported on the day of the incident, the victim was playing football with friends when he slipped and fell on the wet ground and touched the lamp post which led him to being electrocuted. The tragedy created a public uproar following discoveries shoddy work on the lamp post by a contrac-

The victim’s father, Mohd Marzuki Muda, 47, has been relentlessly trying to seek answers to find closure to his son’s death from the commission, Subang Jaya Municipal Council and Tenaga Nasional Berhad. Last July, he expressed disappointment and questioned the delay of the commission’s probe, describing it “inexcusable and not to mention unforgivable”. The Malay Mail had also been extensively highlighting the issue since day one but there had been

no solid stand from the authorities, until yesterday, when Ahmad Fauzi, who was in Brunei when contacted, said investigations had finally been completed last week. “The contractor responsible for the shoddy maintenance work at Taman Batu Tiga playground in Shah Alam that resulted in Muhammad Naquiddin’s death has been suspended. “Our probe team found evidence to show the contractor, hired by MPSJ, was at fault for the installation of the faulty lamp post. “The findings of the probe will be handed over to the AttorneyGeneral’s Chambers as soon as possible.”

Ahmad Fauzi, however, declined to provide further details on the contractor or type of suspension, except to say a copy of the findings would be sent to MPSJ soon. “I cannot reveal the details of the report as it is not for public consumption.” When asked if the boy’s father would also receive a copy of the findings, he said the former could request it from MPSJ after the commission had presented it to the A-G Chambers. Mohd Marzuki, when told about the latest development yesterday, was not excited by the news, saying he had given up hope waiting for the commission’s report but would discuss with lawyers on the next course of action. • Reports on pg2

Probe taken too long

Investigation into boy's electrocution should have been completed in a month, says father THE family of 11-year-old Muhammad Naquiddin Mohd Marzuki are disappointed investigation into his accidental electrocution at the Taman Batu Tiga playground in Shah Alam has taken this long to be completed. The father, Mohd Marzuki Muda, said he believed if it was not for The Malay Mail's constant highlighting on the issue, the probe would not have been lengthy. "I feel the authorities involved were just passing the buck around from the beginning. How can they not know who the responsible contractor was? "Don't they keep any records of such things? They can't be simply be paying contractor for jobs done in the area without having any documentations on them. "If it is not for The Malay Mail, the death of my son would not been taken up to this level." Mohd Marzuki said he was also fed up with being given the runaround, and was impatient by the long wait he and his family had to endure for the past six

months since the tragedy. The former technician said he would discuss with his lawyers to see what would be the next best course of action to take. "In my view, Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) is responsible for whatever that has transpired. I am still surprised they were unable to identify the contractor who carried the works in the first place. "It needed a probe by the Energy Commission to find out who was responsible and that too had to take six months." He said ideally, a month would have been enough to identify the culprit. When asked if he would like to view the probe's findings, he said he would request it from MPSJ soon. "Of course, I would like to have a look at it, but it is not going to change what had happened to my son."

had been completed but felt suspension was not enough for the contractor. "Those responsible should be dragged to court to seek justice for the death of Mohammad Naquiddin." She said not only the contractor should be punished but the person who hired the former should also take the heat. "We have waited too long for the outcome. The tragic incident could have been avoided in the first place if everyone involved had done their work properly. A life was lost due to their incompetence and justice must be served." Subang Jaya Zone 5 councillor Kesminder Singh, who echoed the sentiment, said the commission must reveal the contractor to the public. He also expressed displeasure over the lengthy investigation process."Finally, the contractor responsible has been identified and I hope action will be taken. The Energy Commission must also come out in the open and make known who the contractor is to serve as a serious reminder to others and ensure similar tragedies will not recur. "This is about justice, and the guilty

March 19: Muhammad Naquiddin plays football with friends at a playground near his Taman Batu Tiga, Shah Alam, home and dies from an electric shock after falling against a lamp post. His father, Mohd Marzuki, used a piece of plywood to his right leg that is stuck to the pole due to the heavy voltage. The boy is pronounced dead upon arrival at a private medical centre in Section 20, Shah Alam. March 20: The Malay Mail observes five Energy Commission officers investigating the scene and recording statements from residents.

April 25: Commission enforcement and regional coordination department director Othman Omar clarifies the source of power leakage is from a faulty underground cable joint. Besides seeking to identify the contractor responsible for the lamp post installation, the body asks the council to appoint a registered electrical contractor to repair the fault.

Welcome news, says MPSJ DESPITE being in the dark over the outcome of the probe into the incident, Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) says it welcomes the news. Council president Datuk Asmawi Kasbi said they had yet to receive a report on the Energy Commission findings into the tragedy. "We have been checking with them constantly since the start of the probe, but have yet to receive any feedback from them. "If the probe has been completed, then it is a most welcomed news. We, too, want to know what actually transpired." When asked if MPSJ had any involvement in the suspension of the contractor, Asmawi said the council had no knowledge on the matter as the probe was solely done by the commission. "Like everyone else, we have no choice but to wait for the commission's copy. The suspension of the contractor is done by the Energy Commission themselves as they are the ones investigating the case." Meanwhile, Batu Tiga assemblyman Rodziah Ismail was relieved the probe

May 5: Council deputy president Abdullah Marjunid says they do not know which contractor was appointed, adding he may have been hired by a previous Zone 5 councillor, despite the playground being under Zone 6. The victim's father lambasts the council for its carelessness. May 6: Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Chor Chee Heung says the council will be hauled up explain to why it is unable to trace the contractor. Residents' associations express shock over the revelation. May 9: Former councillor Miswati Dimyati refutes claims she is responsible for the contractor's appointment as she has never been involved in recommending or commissioning any, including for the lamp post installation, during her tenure from 2004 to March 2008. May 13: The deceased's parents are uncertain if they should submit documents for insurance payout or sue the authorities for alleged negligence after receiving a letter from the council, dated May 10, which states the latter received a report from PNSB Insurance Brokers on the incident and asked the family to provide documents to facilitate possible claims under the council's public liability insurance policy. May 19: Council asset management and valuation department director Raja Amir Iskandar Raja Azlan says offering insurance compensation to the victim's family is not an attempt

to stop them from acting against the former, as it is a standard operating procedure. May 25: Chor says he is still waiting for the council to submit their report on the incident. June 2: In a twist, an assistant to Subang Jaya Zone 5 councillor Keshminder Singh claims to have complained to the council on the defective lamp post on May 25 last year, when the council previously denied any had been made. June 6: In yet another twist, council engineering department director Ismail Shafie clarifies receiving complaints on Feb 24, May 25 and May 26 last year on the vandalism of a ground-level switch box and short-circuit inside the switch box at a lamp post at the playground. The victim's family receive a postmortem report from University of Malaya Medical Centre confirming the cause of death being due to electrocution. July 21: Four months after the tragedy, the victim's parents are frustrated over not knowing who is responsible for it. Commission enforcement and regional coordination department director Othman Omar says they are still waiting for a report to wrap up the probe, adding investigations "are at the final stage". July 22: Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Peter Chin Fah Kui says the victim's family can come to his office so that he can get the commission to clarify its findings with them. UMNO Youth also pledged to advise the family if they decide to take legal action. July 26: The father says he has sought a lawyer's advice for possible legal action against the council, adding a letter will be sent asking the council to reveal the contractor's identity within 14 days. Aug 2: The council calls for the commission to reveal the latter's findings as the former is also eager to know what is going on. Aug 9: The victim's father turns down an invitation to meet with council president Datuk Asmawi Kasbi and Batu Tiga assemblyman Rodziah Ismail, saying finding out the contractor's identity is the council's and commission's responsibility. Aug 11: The Malay Mail, together with the boy's father, confront the commission at the Putrajaya headquarters and meet up with chief executive officer Ahmad Fauzi Hasan, who says their probe report will be released in a month. Aug 18: The boy's father accepts legal assistance from Umno Youth which would enable the family to commence action against the commission, council and Tenaga Nasional Berhad.

PM's graft warning Ministers to be advised against getting involved

THE quarterly four-eyed meetings between the Prime Minister and his Cabinet colleagues will be taking on a different twist as Datuk Seri Najib Razak reminds them individually to ensure their respective ministries are not encumbered with corruption and excesses. Highly-placed sources tell The Malay Mail Najib will be issuing “final warnings” to some ministers to ensure they weed out corrupt practices in their ministries and are not

involved in it themselves. “They are also going to be reminded to ensure the success of the Government Transformation Programme (GTP) and that their ministries are not lagging behind,” said a source. When contacted, Najib's press secretary, Datuk Tengku Sharifuddin Tengku Ahmad, played down the meetings, saying they were regular and procedural. “He's just meeting them over the midterm perfor-

However, it is understood these meetings have taken a form of urgency following briefings from the top two lawmen – Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail and Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Datuk Seri Abu Kassim Mohamed – as well as the Special Committee

Against Corruption. Najib was updated on several cases involving highprofile political personalities. "The definition of corruption is such where although one cannot prove corruption, as the law places evidential burdens, that does not mean corruption or abuse of power did not take place," said a source, adding that where the law had failed, it was

" T h e Wo r l d He a l t h Organisation (WHO) advises a country to allocate at least 4.5 per cent of its Budget for healthcare." He said public transportation was another area which needed much funding to notch up its efficiency a step higher. "We need at least RM1 billion allocation a year to increase the efficiency of our public transport. If you take a look at the public transport network in countries like Japan and Korea, it is extensive compared to ours whereby many

Malaysians are still unable to travel to certain areas because of limited access to public transport." She said Malaysia was overly reliant on imported food and too much emphasis was placed on one commodity — palm oil. 'Tunku not mere receiver of independence'

ACADEMICIANS have rejected national laureate Datuk A. Samad Said’s claim the country’s first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, was a mere “receiver of independence”. At a public forum last week, Samad (pic) said the Tunku could not be considered the father of independence but only a receiver because he was handpicked by the British to safeguard their interest in Malaya. THE soon-to-be tabled Budget should address the healthcare and public transportation needs of the people, if the government is serious in providing incentives to ease the rising cost of living. This was the collective opinion of several nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) who were encouraged by the statement by Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah yesterday that Budget 2012, to be tabled in Parliament on Oct 7, would include several initiatives to overcome the rising cost of living. Federation of Malaysian Consumers Association (Fomca) president Datuk N. Marimuthu said healthcare

hoped the respective political parties would do the needful to quell the negative public perception. “This includes getting some of them to resign quietly,” said another high-ranking source. Several ministers contacted had yet to be called but said they are ready to answer any hard questions posed by Najib as he tries to clean up the government machinery and delivery processes in time for the next general election. “I have not been called yet,”

politics and international relations at the College of Law, Government and International Studies. Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) School of Social Science’s Deputy Dean, Dr P. Sivamurugan, said Samad had a right to have his own perspective but warned the country’s history should not be politicised. “As much as we respect Samad's view, the consensus have been long decided that Tunku is the father of independence," he said.

THE de velop er of B and ar Malaysia, 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), could end up paying the Royal Selangor Flying Club up to RM60 million in compensation for taking over its land at the Sungai Besi Airport. The Malay Mail was informed club officials were still negotiating with 1MDB on the quantum of compensation with the intention of finalising the deal before Nov 30, the day aircraft operations at the airport were supposed to cease. Negotiations were now focused on the quantum as club officials had agreed to a site in Subang to build its new clubhouse and facilities. Officials told The Malay Mail 1MDB had proposed RM25 million as compensation — in cash and in kind — but club officials have yet to agree on the amount. A source said the club officials were demanding a higher compensation as the land in Subang was to be alienated on a leasehold basis, unlike the land in Sungai Besi which it had owned since 1933. "Club officials fear Malaysia Airports Bhd may increase the lease in the future so they are holding back on the quantum. A higher compensation is also an insurance against future increase of charges the airport operator may demand from the club," said the source. No deadline has been set for the conclusion of the negotiation. On Aug 15, The Malay Mail reported the club will continue to fly from Sungai Besi even after the control tower stops operating

from Dec 1. The club was to operate from Sungai Besi until its new premises at Subang were completed. On April 7 last year, The Malay Mail front-paged a report on plans to redevelop Sungai Besi into a commercial business hub, complete with a heliport. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had initially denied the report, although he later said the air base would be closed to make way for the “Greater KL” development project as laid out under the 10th Malaysia Plan. Sungai Besi was the country's first international airport. The 162-hectare airport, also known as Simpang, served as the main air link from 1952 to 1965, before Subang was opened. Sungai Besi was originally used as an airstrip in the 1930s but was turned into an airport after World War II. The Royal Malaysian Air Force, which took over the airport, designated it as the Kuala Lumpur Air Base and it hosted two operational command headquarters — the No. 1 Air Division and the Air Logistics headquarters. The 10th Squadron, which flies Nuri and Blackhawk helicopters for utility and VVIP purposes, and the Aerospace Medical Institute are also located at the base, along with the air force museum. The air force will also start relocating some of its units from the air base to other facilities from December but most would remain in place until the replacement air base to be built in Sendayan, Negri Sembilan, is completed.

Dicing with death WORKERS constructing the Jalan Putra pedestrian bridge linking the KTM station with Hentian Putra, PWTC and the Mall risk life and limb as they go about their jobs. The bridge also poses a hazard to motorists and pedestrians plying the area with no safety nets in place to prevent anything from falling from the unfinished sections, located some 10 metres above the road. The Malay Mail, on two visits to the site, saw workers walking nonchalantly along the metal structure of the uncompleted bridge without safety gear. know anything that falls from the uncompleted bridge might land on or in front a moving vehicle or an unsuspecting pedestrian. The pedestrian bridge is a joint project between Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad and Kuala Lumpur City Hall. It is designed to allow thousands of commuters to move along the commuter station, Hentian Putra, PWTC and the Mall, away from the sun and rain. Work on the bridge, which started last year, is expected to be completed by yearend. A Prasarana spokesman declined comment on breaches to safety requirements.

THE whereabouts of the two owners of the now infamous 'cat hotel' at Damansara Damai here are now a mystery even to the police. Petaling Jaya deputy police chief Supt Meor Hamdan Meor Mohammad told The Malay Mail since the suspects were released by police on Sept 4 after their statements were recorded, police are unable to trace them. “We are now in the midst or tracking them down,” he said. Police called several people close to the suspects but even they claim to have no idea on the whereabouts of the two men. Based on police reports lodged so far, a total of 169 cats have been found alive while another six are still missing. Police have classified the case under Section 428 of the Penal Code for “mischief by killing or maiming any animals of the value of five ringgit”, an offence punishable by law with imprisonment of up to two years, a fine or both. A special task force has also been formed by the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) to investigate the case. The task force was meant to speed up investigations as there are a big number of complainants. So far, 40 affected pet owners have come forward with specific details, including medical condition of their cats, the duration the felines were under the care of the cat hotel and the fees they paid. A HARI RAYA open house outing for a family of four ended in tragedy after one of them was killed in an accident along the North-South Expressway Central Link (Elite) highway yesterday. The incident occurred at KM13.7 near the Putra Heights inter-change heading to Shah Alam. The victim, Siti Nadrah

Mohd Asri, 16, died on the spot with a broken neck and other grievous injuries. Selangor Traffic operation officer, DSP Azmi Mansor said Siti Nadrah was travelling from Seremban in the same car, a Honda Civic, driven by her father when

the accident took place. Also in the car were her aunt and a cousin. “They were heading to Siti Nadrah’s aunt's house in Shah Alam. The car was on the fast lane of the expressway approaching Putra Heights when the car skidded striking the road divider before swerving into the opposite direction,” said Azmi.

A Proton Exora which was on the same lane rammed into the Honda Civic. “The impact caused Siti Nadrah, who was seated at the backseat, to be thrown out of the car through the rear windscreen,” said Azmi. Another Proton Exora, on the second lane rammed into her killing her instantly.

Her father, aunt and cousin sustained light injuries while the two Proton Exora drivers were unhurt. Police did not rule out the accident could have been caused by wet road conditions as it was raining when the accident occurred. Nadrah's remains were taken to Serdang Hospital for post-mortem.

PAINTING GALLERY: Abdul Hadi surrounded by his paintings in his studio at Central Market

Master strokes

Abdul Hadi brings to life ordinary people and politicians in life-sized paintings HIS life-size colour paintings of Malaysian political leaders adorn government offices in Putrajaya and Shah Alam and corporate headquarters all over the Klang Valley. In doing so, Kelantan-born Abdul Hadi Ahmad has carved a niche as a much-sought-after portrait artist who can command as much as RM1,000 and assignment. And it all began in 1986 when, at 17, he moved to KL to set up a booth at the then newly-renovated KL Central Market. "That was a quarter century ago, two years after I completed my Sijil Rendah Pelajaran (SRP) Form Three exams, to pursue my dream of being a full-time artist," said Abdul Hadi, 42, who was putting the finishing touches to a portrait of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his wife Datin Paduka Seri Rosmah Mansor, when interviewed by The Malay Mail. "I started out as a sketch portrait artist of ordinary people who wanted inexpensive line drawings of their faces. Whatever I do is self-taught and by observing works of fellow artists. I know I keep improving all the time." Abdul Hadi's fortunes took an upturn when he was asked to do portraits of Malaysian political leaders. "There are individuals and companies wanting colour portraits of particular political leaders to present it as gifts

By IKRAM ISMAIL ikram.ismail@mmail.com.my

to individuals concerned," he said, adding that such clients would hand him specific colour photographs of persons to work on. "When word of my specialty spread, some political leaders sent representatives or approached me personally to paint their portraits." Realising there is a demand for his work, Abdul Hadi began operating a booth at the annual Umno General Assembly a decade ago and has been doing so ever since. "More and more politicians want their portraits done by me. It also led to greater exposure of my works, including taking part in group exhibitions," he said. "In late 1990s, I took part in the Dunia Mahathir art exhibition when three of my paintings on former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad were sold. They can now be seen at the Celcom headquarters." Of art exhibitions he took part in, Abdul Hadi is most fond of a 1996 charity solo exhibition at Menara Maybank in Jalan Tun Perak, at the invitation of Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia (AIM), Malaysia's largest microcredit organisation. "More than 50 of my paintings were exhibited there and almost all were bought by the public," he said, adding that he now averages 20 political

portraits a month. "I estimate over 500 of my portraits of politicians can now be seen in government and corporate offices. It takes me about 20 minutes to do a rough sketch, followed by the painstaking process of fleshing out the portrait to look life-like as possible. This process can take up to five layers of painting. Depending on the size, each portrait takes eight to 10 days to complete." These include those specially commissioned by former Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (now Opposition leader), former Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abu Hassan Omar and current Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Mansor. "My most nerve-wracking assignment came from a prominent individual who wanted an 'action portrait' of one of our Sultans swinging a golf club as a gift. I was pleased when my client later told me that the Sultan was 'elated' with my painting," said Abdul Hadi, adding that it boosted his confidence. "My dream is to stage a solo exhibition on portraits on our nation's founding fathers in relation to Merdeka." Abdul Hadi can be visited at the Central Market Annexe or via www.hadiportrait.blogspot. com.

Payment woes

Customers have to wait in heat or rain to settle parking charges JOSEPH FERNANDEZ, of Petaling Jaya, is unhappy with the parking arrangements at Amcorp Mall, Petaling Jaya. He says customers who want to settle their parking fees "are forced to wait in the hot sun or even possibly put up with the rain". He called Hotline just after leaving Amcorp Mall on Sept 9 as he was unhappy with the service. According to FERNANDEZ, the new payment system requires patrons to walk to the middle of the parking lot to pay the fee. “It is bad enough when it is a hot day but when it rains, people can’t even go to pay their parking fees. Sometimes the machines break down and cannot provide change," he says. “Then we have to go back to the shops and get change — if the cashiers are willing to give us change. Sometimes, they don’t want to since they need change themselves. "During peak hours, the queue can get very long because of this. "It was better previously, so they should probably go back to the way it was." FERNANDEZ hopes the management will look into this. "They should make it easier for people so they can just pay and go."

PAY HERE: Customers queueing up to use the ticket machines at Amcorp Mall — Pix: ARIF KARTONO

● A SPOKESMAN for Secure Parking Corporation Sdn Bhd, Lim Boon Hwee, says the purpose of automating the car park is to speed up transactions for their convenience of the customers. “Before the automation, the customers would have to wait inside their ve-

hicles at the exit boot to make payment, often causing congestion at the exit during peak hours. "Now, they can pay before collecting their vehicles, which allows them to exit the car park smoothly. “We did face challenges during the initial set-up due to some technical

glitches. However, this has since been rectified and the machines have been functioning well. “We have also assigned additional standby staff during peak hours should customers need assistance." Lim says a canopy has been set up for customers

to make payment. However, it is not feasible to provide a covered walkway connected to Amcorp Mall because of the layout of the open-air car park. He says customers who require cover may park at alternative car parks in and around Amcorp Mall.

“We appreciate feedback from customers as it will help us to improve and serve them better." When contacted, FERNANDEZ says he needs to speak up on behalf of the people parking at Amcorp Mall and still hopes customers will not have to wait in the rain.

Mix-up over complimentary pizza OOI LAY IM did not think she would have to wait two hours for her pizza to be delivered to her house but that is exactly what happened when she ordered Domino’s pizza last month. "I made my online purchase on Aug 29 at 5.30pm. Both their website and company motto promised delivery within 30 minutes," she says. The nearest Domino's branch is in Jalan Ipoh,

which is 10 to 15 minutes' ride to her house in Bandar Baru Sentul. After waiting for almost almost two hours, OOI decided to buy hawker food outside her apartment building. As she was leaving, she saw a pizza delivery motorcycle parked at the security guard house. "I ask the security guard and he told me the delivery boy had gone for his dinner at a stall nearby.”

OOI says the pizza was only delivered after the breaking of fast at about 7.45pm and she refused to accept it. She called Domino’s the same night and received an email from the management saying she can redeem the same order as a complimentary meal. "I was advised to call their hotline number to redeem the complimentary order, by providing my mobile num-

ber when placing the order". However, when she tried placing the order for her complimentary meal on Aug 31, none of the customer service agents was aware of it and she was asked to pay RM5 for the double cheesy pizza. “I was disappointed as double cheesy was part of my order. The meal was supposed to be complimentary." ● A SPOKESMAN for Dom-

mal Food Services Sdn Bhd says as a gesture of goodwill to OOI for highlighting the surcharge issue, the company has credited her account with free complimentary pizza vouchers. “This enables her to redeem her cancelled order of two regular pizzas (Double Decker TunaTemptation and New York Crust BBQ Chicken) and two additional regular pizzas of her choice at no extra cost.

“We would like to clarify that Domino’s 30 minute guarantee is our promise to deliver the pizza within 30 minutes after the order is placed." The guarantee comes with a voucher for a free regular pizza, worth RM23.80, redeemable on the next order if it is unable to fulfill its promise. When contacted, OOI hopes Domino’s will improve its service quality.

Hit by 'cheap' greens Illegal traders eating into income of Selayang market stallholders

ILLEGAL foreign traders are still selling vegetables and fruits outside the Selayang wet market — and the stallholders are upset this is affecting their income. In 2008, The Malay Mail reported that vegetables picked up from bins were being sold to the public at cheaper prices. The situation does not appear to have changed. SHARIFAH MAT HASSAN, 41, who has been trading at the market for several years, says the foreigners are allowed to sell "awful greens" for RM1.50 a kilo while she sells hers from prices starting at RM2 a kilo. "At first, they started selling rotten produce at the back of the NSK supermarket until the authorities raided the place and chased them away,'' she says. "Now, they are selling at a spot right behind us. Some of our customers have actually left us to buy from them." KALAIVANI ARASU says she has to explain to her boss why her sales have been dropping. "A customer told me my vegetables were too expensive and it was much cheaper to buy from the illegal traders. "However, I have been selling my vegetables at standard prices, similar to those of the other stallholders." The Hotline roving team, posing as customers, learn that the illegal traders are paying a fee to shop owners so they can operate in front of their premises. According to the stall-

office workers. The popular items sold by them include green vegetables, eggplants, okra, cauliflowers, ginger, lemongrass and local fruits. ● A SPOKESMAN for the Selayang Municipal Council says an operation was conducted against the illegal traders "and they disap-

Holidays delay water and power supply EDWARD NG, of Kuala Lumpur, had been looking forward to moving into his new home at PV 13 Platinum Lake in Setapak, but found his hopes dashed instead. NG says he received a letter from the developer, Platinum Victory Development Sdn Bhd, on Aug 20, asking him to collect his keys. When he and other house buyers went to the developer's office on Aug 27, they were asked to pay three months' maintenance fees in advance.

Online comments www.mmail.com.my

"On the same day, we proceeded to inspect the property and, to my dismay, I noticed the basic utilities such as power and water supply were not available. According to the agreement, the developer must hand over the property ready for occupancy," he says. "The developer says they are waiting for the water and electricity authorities to revert to them." NG says he has made numerous calls since then to

inquire when the water and electricity supply will be installed but the developer has not been able to confirm the dates. In the meantime, he and the other buyers have started to pay their monthly bank instalments. ● PLATINUM Victory Development Sdn Bhd marketing manager Gary Gan says: "The property is complete and has obtained the Certificate of Completion and

Compliance (CCC)." He says the keys were handed to the owners too near the recent long public holidays, which resulted in the authorities not being able to complete the water and electrical utilities installation. Gan says the water and electricity supplies should be available by mid-October. When contacted, NG is happy to note his family will soon be able to move into their new home.

PJ: Civil liberties

Rights and responsibilities

MUCH is being said or done these days in the name of granting or reinstating civil liberties, ensuring people’s freedoms and enabling free and fair elections so people can choose the form and leadership to govern them. We need to understand, however, and especially enlighten the younger generation — the citizens and leaders of tomorrow — how much these wonderful principles of freedom and democracy are equally dependent on our mutual responsibility to safeguard and not intrude on the rights and freedoms of others, their lives and property and pursuit of their wellbeing and prosperity. Physical, civil and economic freedoms are important, but much more than all that is the freedom of the spirit. As the Indian poet and philosopher

Rabindranath Tagore wrote, "Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high ... where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls ... into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.” These freedoms, more often than not, overlap. From the beginning of time, humanity has been yearning to breathe free. People down the ages have been inspired to stand up for their freedom and have, in turn, inspired others to seek their own freedom as well. Human beings are born free because we have been created with amazing minds with which to think, learn, speak, imagine, choose, make decisions, set goals, develop tools, invent, be entrepreneurs, be creative and artistic, develop personality, love and worship.

this Act but calls it under different names. So, since Malaysia is not the only country with this Act, why the hue and cry to abolish it? I feel we still need ISA as a deterrent, to safeguard the peace and stability of this country. As long as one does not go overboard and break the law, there should be no worry about ISA. Just be law-abiding citizens and learn to live peacefully. Anandh

Being Frank: Mr White, did you lie? (Sept 12)

British protectorate or otherwise THIS was a well-written and well-argued piece by the writer. I like the way he interpreted colonialism as aiming at exploiting the wealth and potential of a nation by another. This essentially means the conquering nation holds sway over the subservient nation in all matters of power and authority. Malaya was severely exploited by the British when it came

ity to bear the consequences of our choice — rewards and punishments. Rules, regulations and law are formulated and defined in the greater interest of the common good. These tenets provide the environment and framework within which we are able to express ourselves without undue limitation and enjoy the right to build our lives amid the widest possible freedoms. These legally defined precepts are equally for “securing due recognition and respect for the rights and freedoms of others and of meeting the just requirements of morality, public order and the general welfare in a democratic society” (UDHR: Article 29). However, when man-made laws are overly complex, restrictive, numerous and designed to manipulate every aspect of

human behaviour and conduct, they mostly deprive people of their very right to precious freedom. When democracy is shammed in this way, people might be led to act in ways that are counter-productive rather than conducive to the spirit of freedom. Civil government is established and functions to safeguard and promote people’s freedoms and rights while also preventing and punishing “evil” in whatever form it might be, especially when such actions violate others’ fundamental human rights. The power of the national, state and local authorities is largely to protect the three great natural rights — life, liberty and property — from threats from within (crime) and from outside (invasion). In addition, it should ensure

protection, justice and equality for all people. Nelson Mandela, one of the greatest freedom fighters of all time, has given us in his autobiography Long Walk to Freedom, one of the most sublime characterisations of the nature of freedom: “A man who takes away another man’s freedom is a prisoner of hatred, he is locked behind the bars of prejudice and narrow-mindedness. I am not truly free if I am taking away someone else’s freedom, just as surely as I am not free when my freedom is taken from me. The oppressed and the oppressor alike are robbed of their humanity ... For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” Rueben Dudley

KL: Hero Ong recognised (Sept 14)

Act needed as deterrent THE Prime Minister has announced the repeal of the Internal Security Act (ISA) and the introduction of two new laws in its place. Why not just make the necessary amendments to the ISA and have a new name — Malaysia Security Act (MSA)? I cannot understand the celebration when it was announced the ISA will be scrapped. Have these people no love for Malaysia? Why were they afraid of this Act in the first place? Practically every country has

Other physical creatures, on the contrary, do not possess these faculties and so are not free but are rather ruled by their instincts. In the strict sense, therefore, whatever authority there is can restrict our freedom but cannot “give” us our freedom because we are already born free. Article 1 of the United Nat ions (UN) Univers a l Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) states: “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.” Freedom allows us the right of choice of what we want, how we wish to pursue that and the freedom to choose between options, including the right and the wrong. At the same time, we also have the responsibil-

to natural resources and the Malayan administrators had no say in its finances. Malaya then was akin to a state of impotency at the mercy of the white rule. So, if a nation is exploited, doesn't it mean the nation’s sovereignty was violated. If Malaya was merely a British protectorate, why then were the British also exploiting the State it was protecting? Dr Rosli Shah

Republicans cry 'class warfare' over millionaire tax L E A DI NG R e pu bl i c ans yesterday spurned as "class warfare" an administration proposal dubbed "the Buffett rule" that would ensure millionaires are taxed at the same rate as the middle class. President Barack Obama (pic) was expected to make the proposal today, picking up on a repeated complaint by billionaire investor Warren Buffett that he pays taxes at a lower rate than his secretary, White House officials said. "If he's feeling guilty about it, I think he should send in a cheque," Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told NBC's Meet the Press of Buffett. "But we don't want to stagnate this economy by raising taxes. Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, dismissed the Buffett rule as "just a political move by the president". Increasing taxes on millionaires would add "a de minimis amount of money to the Treasury to pay off the debt," he said on CNN's State

of the Union talkshow. "The tax code should be reformed for one purpose — generate jobs. When you say we'll tax one per cent of the economy, that's class warfare," said Graham. Echoing Graham, Representative Paul Ryan said the administration's proposal was "going in the wrong direction". "Class warfare may make for really good politics but it makes a rotten economics," the Wisconsin Republican s aid on Fox Ne ws Sunday. "We don't need a system that seeks to divide people. We don't need a system that seeks to prey on people's fear, envy and anxiety." Buffett, one of the world's richest men, has questioned the fairness of the system and suggested the rich should be willing to pay more. The millionaires' rate would affect just 0.3 per cent of taxpayers, or fewer than 450,000 of the some 144 million returns filed last year. — AFP

Yemen security forces kill 26 Yemeni security forces opened fire on anti-regime demonstrators in Sanaa yesterday, killing at least 26 and wounding hundreds more after lobbing mortar rounds at the home of a powerful dissident tribal chief. Medics reported 26 dead and 500 wounded by live rounds, batons or after inhaling tear gas. "Twenty six people were killed tonight," Tarek Nooman, a doctor in a field hospital in Sanaa's Change Square, epicentre of the anti-regime protests, said. Mohammed al-Abani, a doctor running another field hospital, said 500 people were hurt. Witnesses said security forces and armed civilians opened fire on thousands of protesters who left Change Square, where they have camped since February demanding regime change, and marched towards the city centre. — AFP

Push to relaunch Palestine talks on A last-ditch international push began in New York yesterday to try to relaunch Israeli-Palestinian peace talks and avert a crisis over Palestinian Statehood at the United Nations. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (pic) held talks with EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton. Asked before the meeting if either could report any progress, Clinton replied, "We are meeting to talk about the way forward." Asked if that meant no progress, she said, "I didn't say that." — AFP

Tremblor sparks panic in India and Nepal

A STRONG 6.9-magnitude earthquake hit northeastern India yesterday, killing at least 19 people, including three caught in a wall collapse at the British embassy in neighbouring Nepal. The quake was felt across a wide region after it struck the small, landlocked Himalayan state of Sikkim — which borders Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet — about 6.10pm, according to the US Geological Survey. Its epicentre was just over 60km northwest of the Sikkim State capital Gangtok, at a relatively shallow depth of 19.7km. At least 60 people were injured in and around Gangtok by mudslides, falling debris and collapsing buildings, Sikkim Chief Secretary Karma Gyatso said, while the town was plunged into darkness by a power cut. "There is no electricity. Everybody is out on the road," Gangtok resident C.K. Dahal told the CNN-IBN television news channel. "We all ran out our houses, some even jumped out of their windows. You can see some buildings that have developed cracks," he added. Tremors were felt in Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and the Indian cities of Guwahati and Kolkata, as well as 1,000km

away in the Indian capital, New Delhi. In Nepal, police said three people were killed, including a motorcyclist and his eightyear-old daughter, when a wall collapsed at the British Embassy compound in the capital Kathmandu, 270km west of the epicentre. "Another two died in a separate incident in eastern Nepal," national police spokesman Binod Singh said. A budget debate in Nepal's parliament was stalled for 15 minutes while lawmakers leapt to their feet and fled the chamber as the entire building shook. Telephone landlines to Sikkim, India's least populous State, were knocked out and mobile networks were swamped, making communication with the affected area difficult. The quake was followed by two strong aftershocks, one with a magnitude of 6.1, and the death toll may rise as reports arrive from remote communities. Sikkim Chief Secretary Gyatso said five people had been killed and 60 hurt in and around Gangtok. "We have reports of dozens of collapsed houses, and roads to many towns have been blocked

residents in Bihar State and four who were buried when a house fell down near Darjeeling. As many as 1,000 prisoners at Jalpaiguri prison in West Bengal State were escorted from their cells under guard after the building was damaged by the quake, officials reported.

'A moral failing' Strauss-Kahn expresses regrets in sexual encounter with maid

FORMER IMF director Dominique Strauss-Kahn admitted yesterday his encounter with a New York hotel maid had been a "moral failing" but insisted he had not tried to rape her. Strauss-Kahn said he had let down both his loyal wife and the French people and admitted he had abandoned his hopes of running from president but denied he had been violent in his relations with two women who brought charges. The 62-year-old Socialist politician and economist was speaking in public for the first time since he returned to France after the New York case and since being questioned by French detectives over the

Sunflowers useless in clearing waste FARM ministry research has dashed hopes that sunflower seeds planted in areas around the Fukushima nuclear power plant would help clean up radioactive contamination. The seeds were sown within the evacuation areas in the belief they would soak up radioactive materials, but the Agriculture, Forestr y and Fisheries Ministry reported sunflowers only absorbed about 0.05 per cent of the radioactive cesium in contaminated ground. The laborious process of scraping off surface soil was far more effective, reports the Asahi Shimbun. Since late May, the ministry has been studying farmland decontamination methods at six locations in Iitate village and Kawamata town.

second case. Interviewed on the TF1 network news by Claire Chazal, a friend of his wife, Strauss-Kahn adopted a combative tone but

regretful words, trying to rescue his reputation while writing off his immediate political prospects. "What happened involved neither violence nor constraint: no criminal act," he told Chazal when asked what had happened in his Manhattan hotel suite on May 14, shortly before his arrest on sexual assault charges. Strauss-Kahn described his seven-minute encounter with maid Nafissatou Diallo as a "moral failing of which I am not proud" but insisted investigators found "no scratches, no wounds, no sign of violence" on her body. He also denied attacking Tristane Banon, a young French

author who is the daughter of a family friend and 30 years his junior — and who has lodged a complaint alleging he tried to rape her in an empty Paris flat in 2003. Again, Strauss-Kahn did not deny there had been an encounter but said: "I was interviewed as a witness. I told the truth that in this meeting, there had been no aggression, no violence. I will say no more. "The version that has been reported is imaginary, slanderous," he added. Despite his denials, however, he admitted he could "obviously" no longer be a candidate for next year's presidential elections and said he would play no

role in the debate surrounding upcoming Socialist primary. Instead, he said he would "take time to reflect" before deciding on whether to resume his political career. Feminists protested in front of the studio as Strauss-Kahn arrived and a poll showed more than half of voters hoped he would abandon his presidential ambitions — or what he called "his appointment with the French." In what was clearly a measured and well-prepared response, Strauss-Kahn accepted he would have to spend time on the sidelines and miss next year's race but hinted at a future political comeback. — AFP

Boy, 11, shot dead in Syria protest AT least one child has been shot dead and another arrested as Syrian pupils protested against the government on the first day of the new school year. Eleven-year-old Ibrahim Mohammed al-Farouj from Sanamein was killed by a bullet to the head, activists said, exactly six months after a group of schoolchildren in the southern city of Deraa sparked the first protests of the uprising against president Bashar al-Assad, reports The Guardian. Some schools remained closed because they had been used as holding centres for detained protesters or because teachers had been arrested, according to sources across the country. In other areas, troops used live ammunition to disperse students who had boycotted classes, chanting "No studying, no teaching until the president is toppled".

Gamers crack AIDS puzzle in three weeks

ONLINE gamers have achieved a feat beyond the realm of Second Life or Dungeons and Dragons: they have deciphered the structure of an enzyme of an AIDS-like virus that had thwarted scientists for a decade. The exploit was published yesterday in the journal Nature Structural & Molecular Biology, where — exceptional

in scientific publishing — both gamers and researchers are honoured as co-authors. Their target was a monomeric protease enzyme, a cutting agent in the complex molecular tailoring of retroviruses, a family that includes HIV. Figuring out the structure of proteins is vital for understanding the causes of many

diseases and developing drugs to block them. But a microscope gives only a flat image of what to the outsider looks like a plate of one-dimensional scrunchedup spaghetti. Pharmacologists, though, need a 3-D picture that "unfolds" the molecule and rotates it in order to reveal potential targets for drugs.

This is where Foldit comes in. Developed in 2008 by the University of Washington, it is a fun-for-purpose video game in which gamers, divided into competing groups, compete to unfold chains of amino acids using a set of online tools. Over-65s too broke to retire OLDER workers are being forced to stay in their jobs past 65 because they don't have enough money saved for their retirement. With super funds taking a battering due to share market fluctuations, longer life expectancies and incentives to keep working longer, an extra 92,000 Australians have opted to remain in the workforce past 65 since August 2007, bringing the total to 334,000, according to the Bureau of Statistics, The Daily Telegraph reports.

Plath given stamp of approval

Mayer suffers throat condition JOHN MAYER has stopped singing — but only for the time being. The Grammy-winning musician, 33, has been diagnosed with granuloma, an inflamed nodule near his vocal chords, he wrote on his Tumblr blog recently. Mayer said he has endured "several months of going week to week monitoring and hoping to correct the condition," but he's now been advised to cancel several concert engagements, Us Magazine reports. His next album, Born and Raised, has also been delayed as he recuperates, he said.

War effort comes undone Hi-tech military uniform stitching fails test

NEW US-made camouflage pants are literally falling to pieces in Afghanistan. The hi-tech MultiCam pants were tried by special forces soldiers before the government spent AU$2 million (RM6.4mil) for 5,000 sets of the combat clothing. But infantry troops in Afghanistan are apparently much tougher on the clothing, reports the Herald Sun. "Special forces do a different job to us," one soldier said. "We are out for days on end living in the dirt." The men are generally

happy with the MultiCam clothing, which is more comfortable and better suited to mixed terrain. But in many cases, the pants, which include special stretch sections and built-in knee pads, are tearing along seams where stretch fabric meets non-stretch fabric. Some soldiers can no longer wear them, others have patched them up and some are happy to wear shredded pants. "The problem is along the stitching where the fabrics meet," one said. "It seems the distance between waist

and crotch is too small, especially for taller guys." Defence Materiel Minister Jason Clare, who fast-tracked the MultiCam clothing and lighter body armour, said the tearing problem must be fixed. He said replacement uniforms and patching kits h a d b e e n d el ive re d to Afghanistan. "The advice from special forces soldiers is that this is the best combat uniform for Afghanistan," his spokesman said. Victorian RSL president David McLachlan said the

MultiCam uniforms should be made in Australia. "The capability to manufacture these items is in Australia and it will be a much more satisfactor y arrangement," he said. "(Then) adjustments can be made in light of experience by those that are wearing them on operations." He said it was unfair to say the men had been let down. "This MultiCam is a magnificent outfit but there wasn't the capability to make it in Australia in the first instance."

SYLVIA PLATH (pic), the poet and novelist who took her own life in 1963, is to be commemorated in the US on a stamp. British admirers of the writer, the first wife of the late poet laureate Ted Hughes, have been calling for a memorial to her here for several years, reports The Guardian. "It is a wonderful thing to see her being properly remembered in America," said Plath's friend Elizabeth Sigmund, 83. She befriended the poet when they were both young mothers living in Devon in the early 1960s and Plath dedicated her highly acclaimed novel The Bell Jar to her friend. The US post office will be commemorating the lives of nine other leading American poets alongside Plath. The photograph of Plath used on the stamp was taken by Rollie McKenna. Plath gassed herself at the age of 30 after her husband left to live with their friend, Assia Wevill. Hughes was vilified by Plath's followers and her grave became a contested site. The name "Hughes" was repeatedly hacked away from her headstone.

EYES ON TOP PRIZE: (From left) 'Mad Men', 'Game of Thrones' and 'Boardwalk Empire' vie for television industry's top honours

LOS ANGELES

Of men, empires and armies Tough contenders battle in three-legged Emmy drama series race

TELEVISION'S Mad Men will bid for a fourth straight Emmy today, hoping to fend off the Prohibition-era gangsters of Boardwalk Empire and the warring kings and knights of Game of Thrones for the industry's top honours. After months of anticipation, the stars and creators of dozens of comedies and dramas gather in Los Angeles for the annual Prime-time Emmy Awards ceremony that celebrates the

best of television. More than 20 Emmys will be handed out in a live telecast on the Fox network hosted by Glee star Jane Lynch, who could find herself accepting an acting award for her role as a sarcastic cheerleading coach on the hit musical comedy. But all eyes will be on the top prizes for best comedy and drama series and some major upsets could be in store, especially in the acting categories.

ABC mockumentary and 2010 Emmy comedy series winner Modern Family goes into the awards with 17 nominations, including acting mentions for all six of its stars. The contest for best drama is much closer. HBO's lavish new show Boardwalk Empire, with 18 nominations, has already taken Golden Globe and Screen Actor's Guild trophies and is regarded as a major contender, despite the 19 nods to Mad Men, the

1960s advertising drama on AMC. Medieval fantasy series Game of Thrones, which proved a surprise success for HBO, has an army of fans, while CBS lawyer show The Good Wife, starring Julianna Margulies, topped an Xfinity TV poll on Facebook as favourite drama. Margulies also is the frontrunner for best dramatic actress, along with Elisabeth Moss, who plays the quiet but

feisty young Peggy Olson of Mad Men. Jon Hamm, who plays suave but enigmatic Don Draper in Mad Men, also is hoping to clinch his first Emmy this year. ACTRESS Lindsay Lohan has sparked fresh controversy after allegedly hurling a drink over a photographer at a New York Fashion Week event recently. The Mean Girls star was said to have become infuriated after Jasper Rischen took her photo at the fashion party hosted by magazine bosses, reports a website, reports the Times of India. Rischen said: "Lohan is as trashy as they always say. She threw drinks and glasses to me as we tried to take a shot for the magazine." Lindsay took her tantrum-throwing a step further and punched a brunette woman in the face.

People are doing injections and Botox now, which I'm not really interested in. Everyone is telling me I should but I don't care. I want to see what I look like when I get old," Anderson, 44, told new! magazine. "I've never really felt pretty, though. I always felt like a tomboy. A lot of it comes with insecurity when you try and be pretty, you're trying to get approval," she said.

Foreign voices drown out ’Suara Kami’ Hear, Say

RANIA: The Korean group got to sing three songs

By JOE LEE joelee@mmail.com.my

twitter @klubbkiddkl SUARA KAMI, the grand celebrations in conjunction with the Malaysia Day celebrations ended on mixed note on Saturday night. While many were in a self-congratulatory mood, that Malaysian talents took a backseat to the “real stars” of the show — foreign acts. Apart from Faizal Tahir who performed two songs, all local talents were relegated to merely making cameos with one song each while Naresh Iyer and Chinmayi from India and Hins Cheung from Hong Kong performed two each, Koreans Rania three, and Nelly practically having his own mini showcase with four. There would have been nothing wrong with the rundown if the

concert hadn’t been marketed to be in conjunction with the celebrations for Malaysia Day. Also, the moniker of the show indicated the voice of the new generation, though in reality, it came out more like a resounding cry for help as local talents played second fiddle. To add insult to injury, Nelly tweeted on his official Twitter account, “Thank u Malaysia all 30k of yall! Amazing wen u do a show n 50% of the crowd can't even speak english but they can sing NELLY: Thinks Malaysians every word! can't speak English WINNING.”

Throwing brickbats at one another ACTRESS Zarina Ann-Julie (pic) stirred up a fuss last week when she took a swipe at actor and host Awal Ashaari (pic right) over Twitter. The colourful character who is best known for some rather racy photos in circulation in the past, hit out at Awal and questioned him over his own skeletons in the closet, saying that he was fair game as well considering that he was an artiste himself, instead of just delivering bits on embarrassing others. Awal retaliated by saying he did not know who she was or what she was on about. Zarina apparently is having none of it, and was not apolo-

getic over her statements, and stood by what she said. Looks like this is going to continue on for a bit more.

The long and short of it, implant-wise COLLAGEN implants may have been all the vogue before, but what’s in season now is disavowing their use. The latest to join the fray is actor Pian of Cecupak, who uploaded photos on Facebook the process of removing what used to “enhance” his pride and joy. Pian may be the first to do so, following loud proclamations of its use but in reality, more than a few artistes have secretly had removal procedures done too. So what’s the next ‘in’ thing?

Hot and cold over ‘All Your Love’ A LYRICIST for Datuk Siti Nurhaliza’s debut English album has hit out at What’s Up Entertainment, run by Adib Khalid, the pop diva’s stepson. Christian Alexander who penned the words to All Your Love had claimed he was still waiting for his contract with the outfit, as well as payment with regards to the making of the album.

Christian, was reported to have claimed that the album’s producer, Bryan Bouro was also in the same situation — and initially debunked claims of the album’s upcoming release. However in a 180-degree turnaround, Christian had sent out a calmer message on Twitter, promoting the upcoming release.

What actually transpired is unknown, or whether any sort of settlement has been decided, but Christian has said it was about handling “his business”. Perhaps an amicable solution is on the way, or the matter has been resolved. Either way, perhaps tweeting about it in the first place wasn’t the best idea.

It was unclear what or who gave Nelly the impression (perhaps through dealing with the organisers) of that, but it reflected enough to show he wasn’t made aware of the significance of the event he was involved in, as it also had our Prime Minister in attendance. To pull a story from the past, Simon Webb from Blue was once asked through a phone interview what he knew about Malaysia prior to the boyband’s stopover for a promo tour. He said to The Malay Mail, he believed Malaysians were still living in trees. Needless to say, once the group got to KL, he profusely apologised as he marvelled at the nation’s developments. So what was the point of glorifying foreign acts like Nelly when the spotlight should have been on the real voice of our generation, the local talents. Perhaps Astro, as organisers, should have had more faith in artistes closer to home, or they could have made the effort to enlighten foreigners that English is a wellused language here. Suara Kami indeed.

Hackers plays KRU-el prank

KRU executive president Norman Abdul Halim (pic) had his Twitter account hacked last week by an active local hacker crew called RileksCrew. If that was nasty, the cyber mischief-makers also hit the Facebook fanpages of the trio of KRU brothers along with many others in KRU Studios. While the intention of the hackers is unknown, this was not the group’s first hit on local celebrities, and it appears that it won’t be the last.

Putting her foot in her mouth THIS happened a couple of weeks ago, but we wanted to run the full account of what was heard. It all began with this newcomer actress who had been at loggerheads with a senior. She raised endless issues such as encroaching into the latter’s love life by claiming to have stolen her man, and how she had been attacked for no reason despite being responsible for stirring the tensions between the two. Anyway, more recently, the newcomer had secured an endorsement deal, claiming to

have replaced her “nemesis”. Well, we have word from the cosmetics and skin care outfit that the newbie had been told off for blabbering her mouth to the media about her yet-to-be announced endorsement. The reason? The newcomer was not replacing her intended target, but a TV personality who was unaware that her contract would not be extended. Oh well. Looks like this new actress will have more to learn — including how to get your facts straight if you want fodder to belittle someone.

WHAT makes YOU Malaysian? Just fresh from celebrating our 54th anniversary of independence, and Malaysia Day, this is the question that everyone should bear in mind. If you are a part of the Malaysian music industry, the answer would depend solely on the whims of the Recording Industry of Malaysia (RIM). Why? Because RIM's revised eligibility rules has determined what makes someone "Malaysian" enough to compete in the prestigious Anugerah Industri Muzik (AIM), the distant cousin (several times removed) of the States-side Grammys. This rather archaic approach has ruffled more than a few feathers when the nominations were announced last week, especially when the regulations did more harm than good when it blocked real homegrown talents from competing, while allowing outsiders to maneuver their way in. RIM claimed they were safeguarding the interests of Malaysian talents. The first snub was to Hujan in major categories. Despite four nominations, they did little to soothe the feelings of one of the leading rock outfits today. Hujan is among those who have spearheaded the country's new music movement. And the reason for the cold shoulder? The keyboardist, and what some claim to be the real maestro of the group is Hang Di-

Teeth gnash over ‘Nasi Lemak 2.0’ WHILE Nasi Lemak 2.0 is having a good run on local cinema screens, nay-sayers have begun to come out of the woodwork. An objection was reported, claiming that the Perak People First Organisation had voiced its fears that the film would have a negative impact on the young generation. They stated they were surprised why the film was allowed to be shown at all given that the director and actor Namewee had ruffled feathers before through disparaging songs and reworking the national anthem. While most have moved on

after hearing from an apologetic Namewee, it appears the hatemongering has led to a call for a ban on the film. And the reason for that? Oh, they just don’t like him. Home Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said parties who were unhappy with Nasi Lemak 2.0 could submit their objection to the ministry and he promised action if indeed there was anything inappropriate in the film. Did someone forget the Censorship Board already let it through?

AIM misses the mark

AND THE NOMINEES ARE... IT’S a clear shift to fresher sounds with Aizat leading with six nominations, followed by a tie of Ning Baizura (five — through her own effort and the collaboration

HOPPED AWAY: Flizzow decided not to enter his labels's efforts for the hip hop nomination Wasn't he signed to a local label too? Or is there a sub-clause on that as well? One of the biggest blows must have been the exclusion of 26year-old Izyan Alirahman, whom we all know by the name of Zee Avi. The United States-based Zee who recently released her second album, Ghost Bird, may be garnering the attention of the world with her music, but RIM said she was ineligible to compete because she was signed to a foreign outfit. Nevermind that Zee Avi is one of the few Malaysian names to penetrate the Billboard charts or that her debut album was listed on the Asscociated Press Top 10 album of 2009. She may have been making waves around the world singing in the national language but she’s apparently not Malaysian enough to compete for AIM Whose fault is that? Zee was never picked up by a local label, and just because she has done well on her own, and her talent iss recognised by a States-side label, how can that render her any less of a Malaysian in her craft? Blame the labels for the rules, and blame them for the brain drain. Even Yuna, despite

her many nominations, was shut out of several categories as her album production was partially recorded abroad. So, just what is it that makes us Malaysian, again? The recording labels? Sign on to one of the powers that be in RIM and you would automatically qualify as a Malaysian candidate. The labels may still be in control of the industry but it would serve them well to remember that their contributions are being marginalised by the talents dominating the scene right now — the large and growing group of small, indedendent, self-funded efforts. And these outfits have a certain amount of clout. Should they wield it collectively, they could deal a severe blow to the powers that be. As it is, the Best Hip Hop Song category had to be pulled out because of "insufficient entries" as Kartel Records, headed by Joe Flizzow, decided not to nominate any of their products (note that Kartel is the largest producer of hip hop efforts in the country). With 18 categories (originally 19), thanks to the sudden demise of 11 categories from the original 29 contested last year, RIM may put the blame on the number fall of

mas Santoso, an Indonesian. Never mind the fact that he has been residing here, has his own retail business and was the person who groomed his own protégé in newcomer Awi Rafael, Dimas was viewed as ineligible, according to RIM. But what was one to make of the nomination for fellow Indonesian DJ Cza? He was nominated for serving as director for Best Music Video in Kotarayaku. During the tense Press conference, where artistes were generally upset over the inconclusive answers given by RIM, it was said that Cza’s exception to the rule was “perhaps he has PR status, and it’s not binding for the technical categories”. Well, if truth be told — he doesn’t have PR status. Does this mean that double standards are being applied? Besides, the specifications of the categories including technical ones were vague at best, a reflection of the scenario where many were nonplussed about the nonsensical changes. Explain that to Greg Henderson, the Australian sound engineer who married a Malaysian and has been living here for 15 years. Despite being a household name and having had his works put up for AIM before, Greg was barred from entering because he doesn’t have a PR. But, wait a minute! What's Anita Sarawak’s name doing in the list for Best Vocal Performance In A Song (Female)? We’re not sure but since when did the Singaporean secure a PR here? According to RIM, it was alright, because she was signed to a local label. Which brings us back full circle to Dimas.

YUNA: Shut out of several categories nominations — from 927 last year to 811 this year. RIM pulled a fast one by announcing a whole new list of rules, regulations and workings for the AIM, but they really should note that they have stepped on more toes than they realise. Even at the announcement of the final five line-up, artistes were incensed and vexed by the lack of clarity in RIM's explanations. What was laughable was that someone like foreigner Maher Zain may eventually walk away with an AIM while Zee Avi who has done so much will go home empty-handed. And dare we mention the cheek of sponsors Celcom in offering a "special award" for Best Mobile Artiste? At the end of the day, we're left with this question. Is there hope looming in the horizon for the local music industry? The answer is simple. Only, and only if the powers that be that serve as the authorities of the music industry start recognising that Malaysian music has changed direction in the last few years. And until they do, AIM will become nothing more than a variety show that uses awards as a reason to get popular artistes to attend, perhaps to boost ratings and as a publicity stunt to peddle their products. THE 18th Anugerah Industri Muzik will be held at the Stadium Putra Bukit Jalil on Nov 12 at 8.30pm.

Two-in-one monster ball

By CHE'AZ cheaz@mmail.com.my THEY did it before in 1984 and now they are going to do it again. The two most memorable old school bands in Malaysia, Sweet Charity and Blues Gang, will rock on one stage in the Konsert 2 Raksasa 2011' on Oct 1 at Stadium Merdeka. The show was initially slated on July 9, but was delayed for two months due to security issues that might have been sparked by the Bersih demonstration. But the bands are still positive as the members looked at the postponment in a positive light. After all, there's always a silver lining somewhere. Members of Sweet Charity and Blues Gang agreed that it was a blessing in disguise. In fact, they were benefitting from the delay. "The two months delay actually gave us more time to mentally and physically prepare ourselves. It has been 27 years since we reunited after the concert in 1984.

So, whatever happened, there must have been a reason for it but that reason has brought us positive results. Hopefully, with the time given, we could really rouse the crowd with the energy we had those days," Sweet Charity vocalist Ramli Sarip said. The band is still pretty much intact with all its original members. Backing Ramli are guitarist

Rosli Mohalim, keyboardist Ahmad Jaafar Jawahir (AJ to fans) and drummer Rahman Sarbani. There will be additional guest musicians and they will perform the band's hits along with songs rarely played on radio. Like Sweet Charity, Blues Gang also features the original family. They are Ito Moh (vocal), Shaik Abdul Karim Shaik Ahmad

(drum and vocal), Jim Madasamy (guitar bass), Abdul Ghani Talip (keyboard and guitar) and Julian Mokhtar (guitar). The band is expected to present all their hits and Ito promised it would be a night to remember, harmonica and all! The concert, which is organised by Netzah Productions Sdn Bhd, is expected to be inti-

mate as die-hard fans would get to walk down memory lane during the two-hour show. "We believe the crowd that will attend the concert this time would be different from the last time. Many who were single back then would surely be married now with families. We really hope our loyal fans would come and be together with us on that day."

Ramli said the theme of the concert that night would be about bringing fans back to the the old good days. "Most of our fans grew up with our music and some of them have even grow older with us. It is like having our old family members back in one place, sharing the same passion for the music that we love." The show will also be recorded since the two bands did not have the opportunity to record their first concert. Stadium Merdeka is also expected to be busy during the day as the organiser will be putting together a free showcase called Monster Of Metal that will present a few local acts like Sofea, Sil Khannaz, Brain Dead, Humiliation, Nuclear Strikes and Al-Farabi Band. Tickets prices are from RM73 to RM500 for VIP seats. Those interested should visit: www. airasiaredtix.com, or go to the ticket counters at Rock Corner and Victoria Music or call 0387754 666.

A celebration of culture

THE PJ Civic centre came alive with all things cultural on Onam Cultural Nite 2011. Organised by the Selangor and Federal Territory Malayalee Association (SFTMA), the event was held in conjunction with the Onam festival, celebrated by the community on Sept 9. Held in honour of King Mahabali, the festival was celebrated on a grand scale by Malayalees across the world regardless of religion. According to legend, the gods awarded the kind and fair ruler by granting him a chance to visit his subjects every year during this time. Onam is a celebration of his return to his kingdom. At the event on Sept 11, members of the community got into the festive spirit by partaking in the Malayalee-style tea affair before the show. Many guests arrived in traditional Kerala attire in celebration of one of the most important dates in their cultural calendar. Sponsored by Poh Kong

ing culture and heritage in the country. He also donated RM10,000 to the society for future events and promised more assistance for upcoming shows. Among the noteworthy performances were Kaikotti Kali, a popular folk dance traditionally performed by the maidens of Kerala and Ottan Thulla, a satirical folklore combining dance, recitation and humourous acting. Also under the spotlight was Vallam Kali which featured a 16.15m boat that was manually rowed on the stage by the SFTMA members. In between the dances, local artistes including Sanjeev Nair, Pranave Prasad, Vineetha Kumar, Preetha Prasad, Shobana Manivanan and Anantha from THR Raaga, sang a variety of Malayalam songs. With Onam celebrated by Hindus as well as Christians and Muslims, the FOLKLORE RE-ENACTED: evening’s programme included items by the The 'Ottan Thulla' was Martoma Church group one of the outstanding and a Muslim represenperformances tative who presented the

Also in the audience was guest-of-honour Deputy Information, Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Maglin Dennis D’Cruz, who, in his speech, said the ministry was appreciative of the efforts of organisations in promot-

well-known folk song Mappila Paatu. Later, four individuals from the Malayalee community were presented with awards in recognition of their work in various fields. The Tan Sri B.C. Shekar award was given to Datuk Dr Nirmala Menon, president and chief executive officer of ING Insurance while the Dr P.P. Narayanan award was bestowed to one of SFTMA’s pioneer members, A.C. Pereira. Professor Dr Aruna Gopinath from the Centre for International Defence and Strategic Defence, National Defence University of Malaysia, was the recipient of the Datuk K. Padmanabhan award while the Bosco D’Cruz award was presented to local thespian Rajan Nair. Rajan Nair later showed off his acting skills in the comedy sketch called Veendum Thilothamma, which got many from the audience in stitches. Headed by chairman of the event, G. Suresh, the event was to help ensure that the Malayalam language would be preserved as an appreciation of the Malayalee culture.

MALAYSIAN Hockey League overall runners-up Sapura handed Armed Forces a 4-0 trashing but their performance was nothing to shout about. Sapura coach I. Vikneswaran said his side were bad in some patches of the game but applauded his boys for the spirit they showed. "We have started the season with three points in the bag. It's always good to start on a positive note," said Vikneswaran. "This is also the first time I've

had 22 players. I did not even have these numbers in training." It was Armed Forces' lack of the final touch that ensured Sapura goalkeeper Khairulnizam Ibrahim a clean sheet. "There were times my players looked all over the place but we rectified it during the game." Even penalty corner specialist S. Kuhan failed to come close to scoring in any of the five penalty corners Sapura had. "He (Kuhan) had one training

session with us due to his work commitment. I'm not trying to give excuses. We have to improve. It's good that Kuhan and Jiwa Mohan will be with us on a full time basis until the league is over. They players can blend better,"

KELANTAN are back in business but coach Datuk M. Karathu is not getting carried away. The east coast side annihilated bottom placed Sarawak 4-0 en route in the Malaysia Cup. But it wasn't enough to dominate the pack in Group C after Felda United managed to keep their unbeaten run in check by managing a 1-1 draw against Johor FC in another match yesterday. The Felda lads top the table with 10 points while Kelantan trail closely with a point shy. However, Karathu admitted his lads missed many opportunities in front of goal. The Red Warriors only obtained their goals in the

final 10 minutes of the match. Badhri Radzi scored a brace in the 80th minute and during extra time while the other goals were through Norshahrul Idlan Talaha (88th minute) and Danial Fadly (89th). "We were struggling in the penalty box. We got the first goal and Sarawak's morale dropped. Only then we managed to get more goals," said Karathu. "We were clearly the better team but the strikers were too eager to score and they fumbled in front of goal. It shouldn't happen. In football, silly mistakes can be costly and we need to learn from this match." The Kelantan side have

LAS VEGAS: Boxing

Pacquiao showdown still no closer for Mayweather

THE prospect of a long awaited mega-fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr (pic) and Filipino Manny Pacquiao seemed as distant as ever after the flamboyant American's fourth-round knockout of Victor Ortiz. Though Mayweather improved his perfect professional record to 42-0 by claiming the WBC welterweight title from Ortiz, he was reluctant to commit to the showdown most desired by the boxing world. "I don't need Pacquiao," Mayweather, 34, said after beating Ortiz at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. "With or without Pacquiao, every time Floyd Mayweather goes out there, he's going to make over US$70 million (RM 216.3m). "I don't need him. Where was Pacquiao in 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 when I was dominating the game? He never asked me (for a fight) when I was in my twenties or when I was in my teens." A duel between the defenceminded Mayweather and the aggressive Pacquiao, the two biggest drawcards of their generation, would decide the mythical title of the world's best pound-for-pound fighter. Five-division world champion Mayweather had been expected to meet Pacquiao last year until negotiations collapsed over the American's demand for random drug testing. Shane Mosley then stepped in to take the Filipino's place but he was outclassed by Mayweather in a non-title welterweight bout in May. Pacquiao is scheduled to fight Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez in November and, should he win that bout, there is speculation the Filipino southpaw could finally meet Mayweather next May. — Reuters

Vital try

Welsh hero Williams thankful for his contribution in win over fighting Samoans WA L E S w i n g e r S h a n e Williams said his decisive score in the 17-10 hard earned victory over Samoa in a Pool D clash yesterday was "one of the most important tries I've ever scored". The Welsh were given a stern test by a talented Samoa team, who went into halftime 10-6 up. But Williams' second-half try proved the difference between the two sides, and puts Wales in pole position to secure a quarterfinal spot. "It was an important time to score the try. It was probably not the most spectacu-

lar try I've ever scored, but it was one of the most important tries I've ever scored," Williams told ITV. Williams also paid tribute to the Samoans. "They are a class outfit and we struggled with them at the breakdown. We made far too many mistakes and it kept Samoa in the game. They played some good rugby and kept the ball far better than we did, went through the phases better and camped on our line several times. "In fairness, they'll be disappointed to have lost."

Wales scrum-half Mike Phillips dedicated the result and performance to the victims of the recent mining tragedy at Gleision Colliery in south Wales. "We're a proud nation and we wanted to give our regards to those families. Hopefully our win today can help in some little way." The Samoans threw everything at the Welsh defence in the first 40 minutes and twice came desperately close to scoring. On the first occasion, they lost possession on the Wales goal-line. The second

time, the try was disallowed because of a double movement. "I asked the referee to go to the TMO (television match official). That was

harsh. It might have been the turning point of the game," said Samoan captain and hooker Mahonri Schwalger. "You lose some, you win some."

SUBANG: GOLF/ 100PLUS Malaysian Junior Open

Azry steals the thunder

IT was Muhammad Azry Asyraf Noor Azam who stole the show at the 100PLUS Malaysian Junior Open. The 16-year-old from Kulim, Kedah shot a four-over 220 at the Saujana Golf and Country Club last Thursday to take home the top prize as well as the Under-16 title. Azry, who first shot to prominence when he lifted the Perak Amateur Open in June, showed no fear despite being under pressure from Jeremiah Kim and Low Khai Jei who were fighting hard to prove their worth to the national selectors who will name their squad to the Jakarta Sea Games in November. Despite his victory, Azry may not be in contention to be selected as he lacks the experience of both Jeremiah and Khai Jei. Then, there are also the likes of Gavin Kyle Green, Kenneth de Silva and Abel Tam in the running to be part of the Malaysian team.

''I"m delighted to have won the 100PLUS Malaysian Junior Open and I hope it will be the start of better things to come. "I have not thought about the Sea Games. I"m still young and will get more chances in future." As for the women, Loy Hee Ying finished as the top Malaysian when she carded an 11-over 227 for fourth place. The 14-year-old, who attended a coaching clinic by American superstars

Paula Creamer and Natalie Gulbis last month, is a regular in the 100PLUS Malaysian Junior Open, having won the Under-14 title last year. This year, however, Indian prodigy Aditi Ashok edged her to that title. The next highest Malaysian was Sea Games hopeful Nur Durriyah Damian, who was fifth, two strokes behind Hee Ying. Isza Fariza Ismail, who was expected to challenge for the title, was disqualified when she signed a wrong score card. As such, it is understandable that the Malaysian Golf Association are trying their hardest to ensure Kelly Tan, who won a bronze medal at the Laos Games two years ago, will be able to represent the country in Indonesia. Kelly is currently studying and playing golf in the United States and will have to make some sacrifices in order to be free for the tournament.

NAPIER

France's Clerc too hot for Canada

England have to improve to go far, says skipper ENGLAND captain Lewis Moody called for a marked improvement despite his side running in six tries in their 41-10 win over Georgia in a Pool B match at Otago Stadium yesterday. Shontayne Hape and Chris Ashton each crossed twice as England finished winners but spirited resistance had kept the Georgians in the hunt at half-time. "We have a lot to improve but you can only win each game in front of you and that's what we've done today (yesterday)," said Moody. Georgia were only 17-10 down at the break, but second-half tries from the three-quarter trio of Delon Armitage, Manu Tuilagi and Ashton (two) gave England breathing space. Armitage put England two scores ahead and as the match entered the final quarter, Georgia’s stretched defence barely laid a hand on Tuilagi as he chose a perfect attacking line. With Georgia flagging, Ashton then celebrated a try with his signature swallow dive, before completing the scoring right on full-time. The match was less than four minutes old when Hape sprinted clear after a bullocking run by second row

Simon Shaw. When the centre scored his second try in the 21st minute, England appeared to be cruising but indiscretion at the breakdown — the former champions conceded 10 penalties before the break — cost them. "We made it hard for ourselves by giving away a lot of penalties and making mistakes at the breakdown, but we came away with six tries," said Moody. Dylan Hartley was sinb i n n e d f o r p e r s i s t e nt infringement just before half-time and Georgia elected to take the scrum from

the ensuing penalty. Georgian number eight Dimitri Basilaia crashed over and the conversion by flyhalf Merab Kvirikashvili brought his side back to 17-10. The Georgians deserved their try, having gone close earlier when wing Irakli Machkhaneli was knocked into touch as he dived for the corner. Flyhalf Toby Flood converted four of England’s tries and added a penalty. But his opposite number Kvirikashvili had a wayward day, missing five of his seven kicks.

E ng l an d h e a d c o a ch Martin Johnson insisted some of his players may have been "a little rusty" after not playing for several weeks. "There is a frustration that we don't seem as composed when we have the ball. Georgia put a lot of pressure on the English. We looked like we are being coached by people who are coaching by numbers. England aren't expressing themselves," Johnson said. England are now top of the pool — above Scotland on points difference. They play Romania on Saturday, before facing Scotland on Oct 1.

AUCKLAND

Wallabies can survive tricky route, says Cooper

AUSTRALIA flyhalf Quade Cooper admitted the Wallabies have made life very difficult for themselves after slumping to a shock 15-6 defeat by Ireland in a gripping Pool C encounter in Auckland on Saturday. Ireland's stunning success at Eden Park, which was founded on an awesome display by their pack and a supreme defensive effort from all concerned, means that with games against Russia and Italy to come, they are now favourites to top the pool. The Australians are still near certainty to qualify for the knockout stages given that their two outstanding games are against the United States and the Russians. However, they are now

heading towards the ''wrong'' side of the draw given that their likely quarter-final opponents are champions South Africa. Should they defeat the Springboks, they will then, in all likelihood, have to go through hosts New Zealand to get to the final. "The road that we have from here on is a tough road but we are all up for it," Cooper told AAP. "This sort of game makes you realise this tournament only comes around every four years and losing one game can be detrimental to the rest of the tournament. "But we're in a good position that this one game isn't the end of the road for us. It just makes the road a little bit more tougher."

THREE tries by wing Vincent Clerc steered France to a 46-19 victory over Canada in a Pool A clash at McLean Park yesterday. Damian Traille also went over and France's cause was further served by a peerless kicking performance from scrumhalf Morgan Parra who racked up 23 points. Fullback James Pritchard kicked Canada into the lead after two minutes with a 35-metre penalty after Pascal Pape strayed offside at a ruck. Pritchard fumbled an up and under from Francois Trinh Duc three minutes later and Clerc gathered to touch down. Parra converted to send the French 7-3 ahead. Ryan Smith went over to put the Canucks back in front after the French defence was found wanting under a high ball from Ander Monro. Pritchard added the conversion to extend the advantage to 10-7. A Parra penalty levelled the score at 10-10 in the 17th minute. The Clermont Auvergne player put France ahead in the 37th minute and extended their lead to nine points with two further quick penalties as the interval approached. Munro kept Canada in contention after the restart, sending over two superb drop goals either side of another Parra penalty for the French. Trinh Duc got in on the drop goal act at the other end in the 56th minute when he planted another terrific effort between the posts to restore the nine-point deficit. But Pritchard gave the Canucks renewed hope when he kicked his second penalty of the match three minutes later. Fullback Traille gave the French breathing space when he collected after a line-out in his own half and raced more than 60 metres through the Canadian defence for a

stunning try. The ever-reliable boots of Parra added the extras to send Marc Lièvremont's team 32-19 ahead. Clerc ran over twice in the last four minutes to wrap up the victory.

Sweet 16 Thompson becomes youngest LPGA winner AMERICAN Lexi Thompson (pic) became the youngest champion in the LPGA's 61-year history, the 16-yearold prodigy firing a twounder 70 this morning to capture the Navistar Classic by five strokes. Thompson, who is seven months and eight days beyond her 16th birthday, finished 72 holes on 17-under 271 at the US$1.3 million (RM4.01m) event to defeat compatriot Tiffany Joh by five shots and American Angela Stanford by six. American Marlene Hagge won the 18-hole Sarasota Open in 1952 just two weeks past her 18th birthday to

extended his lead over second-placed Lorenzo to 44 points, climbing to 284. "We had a difficult race in San Marino (when Stoner came third two weeks ago) but we knew the problem, that I was tired and that the bike was good enough," Stoner told Spanish television.

become what had been the youngest LPGA champion. Paula Creamer, another American, was nine months and 17 days past her 18th birthday when she won the 2005 Sybase Classic to become the youngest winner of a typical multi-round event until Thompson's triumph. Thompson, who turned pro in June of last year, birdied the par-3 second and suddenly only playing partner Meena Lee of South Korea was within eight strokes of the lead, and Lee was six adrift. A birdie at the par-5 eighth gave Thompson a personalrecord 20th birdie of the week. Lee birdied the ninth to stay within six but began the back nine with a bogey to leave Thompson seven clear of the field at 17-under. Thompson, who made only three bogeys in the first three rounds, stumbled with back-toback bogeys at 11 and 12, missing six-foot par putts on both holes as her lead shrank to five shots with six holes to play. Lee birdied the par-3 13th to move within four shots but faded as Joh charged into contention with a run of four birdies in a row through the 15th hole to pull within three of Thompson. She had led after 54 holes earlier this year at Mobile, Alabama, and squandered the lead with a last-round nightmare to finish in a share of 19th. But Thompson made it clear that such bad memories were well in the past. After Joh had a short birdie miss at the par-3 16th, Thompson tapped-in for a birdie and sank another at 17 to seal the historic victory. — AFP

Nadal heaps more criticism on ITF

SPANISH superstar Rafael Nadal again blasted the International Tennis Federation (ITF) this morning, claiming they were shirking their responsibility to players by failing to lighten a packed tennis calendar. Nadal led Spain to a 4-1 Davis Cup win over France, and a final date with Argentina, but there were tears for his US Open final slayer Novak Djokovic whose injury-forced retirement saw defending champions Serbia slump 3-2 to the South Americans. The Spaniard, who earlier in the week refused to rule out a strike over a schedule which forced him to play the Davis Cup just four days after losing the US Open final, said he regretted none of his comments. ITF chief Francesco Ricci had hit back at Nadal's criticisms yesterday, stating that they should be directed

IT'S TOO PACKED: Nadal only had four days of rest — AFP photo

towards the ATP who control 90 per cent of the calendar. But the world No 2 insisted: "The ATP have done a lot of things for players. "They noteably helped players increase their benefits and not just financially, while the international federation (ITF) are in the handy position of not want-

ing to change anything. "Of course they look after the youth categories by giving them money but they make no effort concerning the calendar. "The ATP's problem is that their good will is not enough. As they represent not only the players but also the tournaments there is a lot of

inertia to change things." Ricci had stated: "I have the deepest respect for Nadal. He is a great champion and a sporting role model, but to accuse the Davis Cup of putting players' physical well-being at stake is incomprehensible. "Why do esn't Nadal address his complaints to the ATP which controls 90 per cent of the calendar when we control just a few weeks? "And to say that the ITF turns a deaf ear, this really doesn't hold water. We have always listened to the players. For example, I have always said that a September date for the Davis Cup wasn't fair and that we wanted to change it. "We are always open to dialogue. I have talked to the president of the ATP who has asked me to address the ATP player council. We are in the process of finding solutions." — AFP

Tired Murray hits out after Davis Cup rout WORLD No 4 Andy Murray insists the current schedule for top players must be changed to ease their workload after his tired victory in the Davis Cup against Hungary this morning. Murray was forced to travel to Scotland to meet his Great Britain teammates just one day after returning home from the US Open. Next week he will be back on court in Asia at the Thailand Open in Bangkok. It is the final part of a gruelling year-long schedule that has started to take its' toll. Britain had wrapped up victory over Hungary and promotion back to Europe/ Africa Zone Group I of the

Davis Cup yesterday when doubles pair Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins established an unassailable 3-0 lead. But, with a near full house expected at Braehead Arena and fans eager to see their hero, Murray decided to play this morning's first dead rubber against unranked Gyorgy Balazs. It looked an easy task for the British No 1 on paper but he struggled to get going while Balazs proved a useful opponent. In the end Murray was happy to come through 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 after going a break down early in the second set. Murray then turned his

attention to the demands placed on top stars and admitted the main problem is the number of mandatory tournaments the players must compete in. As well as the four Grand Slams and eight Masters 1000 events, players must also enter four other tournaments, while the ranking points are made up of results from 18 tournaments, so players will lose out if they play less. Murray said: "The mandatory events is the worst thing. All you had to do originally was play in nine Masters Series and four slams, that was 13 events. "I'm being quite open about it, some of the smaller events,

because the ATP's messed up the smaller tournaments by giving them 250 points, it doesn't really make much sense to play in, because 250 points isn't going to make hardly any difference. "When we play the Masters Series and the Slams, we're playing against the best players in the world every time. The schedule's messed up and we need to change it." The issue of the schedule and a feeling of a lack of power among the players came to the fore at the US Open, and a meeting is scheduled at the Masters in Shanghai next month, where Davis Cup dates are likely to be discussed. — AFP

Falcao treble sinks Racing Santander NEW signing Radamel Falcao (pic) lit up the Calderon with a splendid hattrick to set Atletico Madrid on the way to a 4-0 win at home to Racing Santander this morning. The Colombian striker, top scorer in last season's Europa

League with 17 goals as he led Porto to the title, netted the opener in the 23rd minute at a sun-bathed stadium after good work by former Arsenal winger Jose Antonio Reyes. His second came from the penalty spot in the 36th after Brazilian Diego, anoth-

er close-season addition to Gregorio Manzano's squad, had been felled in the box. Atletico's third high-profile new signing, Turkey midfielder Arda Turan, then played Falcao through to complete his treble with a deft chip over goalkeeper

Tono 10 minutes after the break. Brought in to help fill the gap left by the departures of Diego Forlan and Sergio Aguero, the Colombian was given a rousing ovation by the home fans when he was substituted midway through

the second-half. Turan claimed his second assist with just over 10 minutes left when he crossed for substitute Adrian to glance a header past Tono for the home side's fourth — to round off their first win of the campaign. — Reuters

Barca's thrashing of Osasuna massive boost for Catalans and striker Villa BARCELONA striker David Villa expressed joy at seeing his team hammer Osasuna 8-0 at Nou Camp on Saturday and claims the scoreline will give them a boost in confidence. The Spain international scored a brace with Lionel Messi bagging a hattrick. Midfielder Xavi also found the target while Osasuna defender Roversio scored an own goal. The 29-year-old went on to comment on squad matters and praised teammate Cesc Fabregas for slotting into first-team so seamlessly. "Cesc has been raised here. Meanwhile, Mendilibar claims Osasuna paid the price for the so-called Barca's recent ''mini-crisis'' for the sensational thrashing. "They were angry because of their so-called mini-crisis and we paid the price for that."

Don't blame Gasperini, says Sneijder SECONDS FROM DISASTER: Lucio (left) about to clash with Stekelenburg in their match — AFP photo

INTER MILAN star midf ielder Wesle y Sneij der admitted they are underperforming but called on detractors not to blame manager Gian Piero Gasperini for their recent poor results. Inter were held to a 0-0 draw by Roma at San Siro on Saturday. Sneijder said it was "easy to p oi nt t he f i nge r " at Gasperini as the cause of the problems but it is the team's responsibility to turn around Inter's fortunes. "It's all too easy to point the finger at the manager as everyone seems to be doing," Sneijder told Sport 1. " Un for tu n ately t h i ng s aren't going for us at the moment.

"We're not able to put away the many chances we're creating." Gasperini received criticism for the Nerazzurri's poor start to the season which has seen them lose all three competitive matches played prior to this draw. Inter, who lost 2-1 to arch-rivals AC Milan in the Italian Super Cup, were defeated by Palermo 4-3 in the league, then shocked 1-0 by minnows Trabzonspor in the Champions League. He also said several key players were not up to their standards. "The f irst par t of the match saw Yuto Nagatomo get into great spaces for us but then we had to raise our defensive game and stifle Daniele De Rossi," he said.

"Diego Forlan did a lot but Diego Milito did not offer much. I introduced Su l le y Munt ar i b e caus e I felt we needed another midfielder as Sneijder was bright but he struggled in the middle. "After I made those changes, we had the best opportunities, and even though we didn't score, let's treat this match as a positive.” Meanwhile, Roma goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg has regained consciousness after clashing with Inter defender Lucio during the match. The former Ajax custodian's neck was the recipient of a fully-committed sliding tackle by Lucio after they both collided while going for a 50-50 ball.

I would say Harry Redknapp is similar to Jose Mourinho because of the way he treats players and gives you confidence — Emmanuel Adebayor

DAILY MAIL

Devil boss wants 'Special One' MANCHESTER UNITED manager Sir Alex Ferguson will recommend Jose Mourinho as his successor when he eventually leaves Old Trafford. Ferguson’s decision to back his former rival for the biggest job in football will be critical for the 'Special One', who has made plenty of enemies during a colourful career with Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan and now Real Madrid. Senior figures at Old Trafford are concerned Mourinho will tarnish the club’s reputation, and his cause was not helped earlier this month when he allegedly poked Barcelona’s assistant manager Tito Vilanova in the eye following a recent Real Madrid defeat at Nou Camp. But Ferguson, who has grown increasingly close to Mourinho since the Portuguese left England in 2007, still believes he is the right man for the job with the required experience, work ethic and personality — and will tell the United board when he is consulted.

EMMANUEL ADEBAYOR believes he has won over the Tottenham supporters after scoring twice in his home debut in the 4-0 win over Liverpool. The former Arsenal striker joined the Gunners' north London rivals last month, after an unhappy spell at Manchester City, and netted away at Wolves to open his account. Two more at White Hart Lane confirmed his threat to opposition defences, and any fears the Tottenham faithful would not take to a former Arsenal favourite have been dispelled. "I'm happy, very delighted," Adebayor told Sky Sports.

The Glaswegian boss and the fiery Welsh dragon have both been at Blackburn, Newcastle and Celtic — but never at the same time. Now ''King Kenny'' has finally captured the player he’s tracked since his days as a kid at Norwich. "I must have looked at him throughout his career. I don’t know why I never bought him before. He’s been at a few places I have been but never when I was there. He’s been at Blackburn, Newcastle and Celtic so you might as well make it a full house."

Torres miss blues

FERNANDO TORRES went from hero to zero as the Spain striker's troubled spell at Chelsea continued with an embarrassing miss in his side's 3-1 defeat at Manchester United. Torres seemed to be having a rare day to remember in a Chelsea shirt as he scored just his second goal for the Blues since his British record £50 million (RM243.9m) transfer from Liverpool in January. His cool, chipped finish over David de Gea just after half-time gave Chelsea a glimmer of hope after United's three-goal salvo in the first-half and gave him a just reward for an enterprising display.

Yet, just as things were looking up for Torres he reverted to the clumsy form that has seen him written off as the biggest transfer flop in Premier League history. When Ramires sent Torres clean through on goal in the closing stages, the Chelsea striker looked certain to score as he skipped round United goalkeeper David de Gea. But faced with an open goal and just six yards out, he somehow contrived to scuff a hurried effort woefully wide of the target and hung his head in shame as the mocking cheers of 75,000 United fans filled the Old Trafford air. There was no way back

for Chelsea after that but Blues boss Andre Villas-Boas refused to condemn Torres for the howler and insisted the mistake was no worse than Wayne Rooney's penalty miss earlier in the match. "You have an example of Rooney missing a penalty too which is basically the same. "The worst things happen to the best strikers in the world and today it happened to both of them," Villas-Boas said. Unite d b oss Sir A lex Ferguson admitted he was convinced Torres would score. "I thought he was bound to score. It was a bad miss, he had so much time." — AFP

Fuming Ferguson United boss angry with Cole foul on Hernandez

DAILY MIRROR

Adebayor happy with Spurs

The Malay Mail Monday 19 SEPTEMBER, 2011

SIR ALEX FERGUSON admitted Ashley Cole's "shocking" tackle on Javier Hernandez had taken the shine off Manchester United's 3-1 win over title rivals Chelsea yesterday. Ferguson saw United storm into a three-goal lead through Chris Smalling, Nani and Wayne Rooney as the champions maintained their perfect start to the Premier League campaign. United are two points clear of second placed Manchester City, but Ferguson was more concerned with drawing attention to Cole's late tackle on Hernandez in the penalty area in the 79th minute. Chelsea left-back Cole was booked for catching Hernandez with a nasty twofooted challenge, although no penalty was awarded as the ball had gone out of play, and the Mexican striker was forced to come off with an injury that could keep him out for at least two weeks. "It's a shocking tackle. The referee booked him (Cole) and I don't know why it wasn't a penalty," Ferguson said. "We're going to have to wait until the morning because at the moment his leg is numb. He could be out for a couple of weeks." Although Ferguson was delighted to see off a title rival, the Scot conceded that United had been slightly flattered by the margin of victory as they allowed Chelsea far too many chances with some

careless passing. "It was a fantastic, open match but we created our own problems for ourselves," he said. "We gave the ball away in attacking areas and they kept counter-attacking us. In the first-half they could have scored two or three. "We created more opportunities, fantastic opportunities, particularly through Nani and Ashley Young, who kept getting in very good areas. That was our strength, they couldn't cope with that." Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas, beaten in a league match for the first time since April last year, insisted his side deserved more for their performance and he took heart from the way they put United under pressure in the second-half. "It was a strange game, open and a lot of opportunities for both teams," he said. "If luck could play a better part for our side today, maybe. We had some good chances to even the score or score first. "The scoreline went crazy in the first-half, but we had good opportunities to do something in this game. "Coming back from 3-0 down is always difficult and we had to take risks without exposing ourselves too much. "The second-half recovery was good and we had a couple of chances to even the score. The scoreline is crazy." — AFP

Cottagers' cheer Fulham fightback frustrates City

BAYERN MUNICH'S 2-0 win at Schalke fired the Bavarian giants back to the top of the German league this morning, while champions Borussia Dortmund suffered a second straight defeat as they lost 2-1 at Hanover. Bayern are two points clear at the top of the table after six games and have now gone eight games without conceding a goal, thanks mainly to ex-Schalke goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. With Germany striker Mario Gomez out with a groin injury, new Bayern signing Nils Petersen (pic) took his chance and put his side ahead on 21 minutes after some good work from France wing Franck Ribery. Bayern made sure of the win when Germany midfielder Thomas Mueller took advantage of some sloppy Schalke defending to score the second on 75 minutes. "That was another strong performance from my team," said Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes. "The second-half was our best 45 minutes of this season." — AFP

MANCHESTER CITY dropped their first Premier League points after squandering a two-goal lead in a 2-2 draw at Fulham yesterday. Roberto Mancini's side appeared on course for victory when Sergio Aguero struck twice inside 46 minutes to take his personal tally to eight goals in his first five Premier League appearances. "It's incredible. We lost two points after we scored two goals and dominated the game, but I think this can be a lesson for us," Mancini said. But Fulham staged a stirring fightback to recover through goals from Bobby Zamora and Danny Murphy. The draw meant City missed the chance to exert maximum pressure on neighbours Manchester United who started the day level on points with Mancini's side at the head of the table. Fulham, meanwhile, claimed their third point of the season thanks to a performance that gave hope to new manager Martin Jol after a difficult start. The Cottagers were spurred by the added incentive of attempting to haul themselves off the foot of the Premier League table following the previous day's results. But after a positive start, Jol's side quickly found themselves pushed back as City shook off the disappointment of their midweek draw against Napoli in the Champions League and took control of the game. Mancini's team has carried

a familiar look during the opening weeks of the season. And the manager once again left Carlos Tevez on the bench and placed his faith in the attacking quartet of Aguero, Samir Nasri, Edin Dzeko and David Silva. Fulham's defenders found themselves continually stretched to near breaking point when the City forwards clicked into gear. They were ahead after 18 minutes when Silva turned provider and Aguero provided the first example of the finishing that has already established

him as one of the league's outstanding strikers. Gareth Barry played the ball into Silva's feet and the former Valencia man picked out Aguero who had moved into space just inside the Fulham area. The home side claimed the Argentine was in an offside position when he received the ball, and television replays suggested they had a case, but Aguero finished easily past Mark Schwarzer to put City in control. From that point Fulham struggled vainly to gain a

foothold. But Mancini's side created little in the way of clear opportunities and when they did, found Schwarzer to be in impressive form. He produced an outstanding reaction save to tip Dzeko's first time shot over the bar after Silva had set up his teammate with a well weighted pull back. Having restricted City to just one goal, Fulham had every right to believe they could force their way back into the game despite having been out-played. Hope of a recovery seemed to disappear, however, when City doubled their lead within 12 seconds of the restart. From the kick-off, Silva rolled the ball back to Clichy whose long ball forward was nodded down by Dzeko into the path of Aguero who finished from 20 yards. Game over, or so City thought. Fulham had other ideas and, with little to lose, finally took the game to City, clawing a goal back through an excellent 55th minute strike from Zamora. Inspired, Jol's side pressed for an equaliser and it took a desperate tackle from Micah Richards to deny Clint Dempsey before City keeper Joe Hart was forced to save from Mousa Dembele and then a Dempsey header. But Jol's side didn't have long to wait before completing a stirring recovery with Murphy's deflected shot finding a way past Hart in the 75th minute. — AFP

Spurs rout nine-man Reds TOTTENHAM secured their first home win of the season in emphatic fashion as nineman Liverpool were routed 4-0 at White Hart Lane yesterday. Harry Redknapp's side, who lost 5-1 to Manchester City in their last home outing, took the lead early in the first-half through Luka Modric's superb strike before Liverpool duo Charlie Adam and Martin Skrtel were sent off either side of half-time. Jermain Defoe made it 2-0 and Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor, on loan from Manchester City, struck twice

to take his tally for the club to three in two games. The defeat was the heaviest suffered by Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish since he began his second spell in charge in January, as well as the biggest Spurs success against the Reds since 1963. Tottenham took the lead in the seventh minute when Croatia midfielder Modric slammed a blistering shot into the top corner of Reina's goal. Scottish midfielder Adam was dismissed in the 28th minute after earning a sec-

ond booking with a foul on Scott Parker. Any thoughts that Liverpool could still avoid a second successive defeat were erased when Skrtel was sent off in the 63rd minute for a second booking after clattering Gareth Bale. Tottenham took full advantage of their numerical superiority. Defoe ran clear to score in the 66th minute and Adebayor tapped in after Reina spilled Defoe's shot two minutes later before blasting home from close-range in stoppage time. -- AFP

Rajagobal mum over stint with Bluebirds

NATIONAL coach K. Rajagobal (pic) could join the likes of national skipper Safiq Rahim and striker Safee Sali for a stint in Cardiff City FC. Mailsport learnt Cardiff City chairman Datuk Chan Tien Ghee “formally” invited Rajagobal to spend some time at the Welsh club during a function recently. It is unclear if Rajagobal accepted the offer as both parties have remained mum over the deal. It is believed Cardiff manager Malky Mackay could make a trip to Kuala Lumpur

soon as the club further reinforce their impression on the Malaysian public. The club have the word Malaysia emblazoned on the front of their jerseys and they have also set up the 1 Malaysia Cardiff City academy in KL. This comes as a pleasant surprise after Rajagobal’s name was also mentioned by Queens Park Rangers’ (QPR) manager Neil Warnock during an online Press conference two weeks ago.

Warnock told members of the Media that “Rajagobbal will probably head over to QPR” to exchange views with the staff there. Apparently, Rajagobal was “surprised” to be linked with QPR as no one from the club had spoken to him about the matter. QPR are now owned by another Malaysian tycoon Tan Sri Tony Fernandes. The former international has caught the attention of many after the national side emerged victorious at the

2009 Laos Sea Games and the Asean Cup last year. Since then, a number of teams — both national and clubs — have zeroed in on Rajagobal. Meanwhile, Mackay is not discounting the possibility of hiring Asian players. The Bluebirds boss was quoted by the Welsh dailies saying, “This club’s Malaysian owners spoke to the recruitment department and I said let’s have a look at him (Safee). “A couple of teams in the Premier League have tapped into that (Asian) market but

work permits and criteria to get them into the country could hamstring us a little bit.” Safee is expected to return from his stint next week.

TEN-MAN Real Madrid slumped to a shock 1-0 defeat at Levante this morning as the tiny Valencia-based club ended the nine-times European champions’ perfect start to the season. Jose Mourinho’s side had midfielder Sami Khedira sent off five minutes before half-time and fell be-

hind when Levante forward Kone, who joined from Sevilla in the close season, smashed the ball into the net with just over 20 minutes left. Real’s Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo, top-scorer in the league last season with a record 40 goals, started on the

bench after he sustained a gashed ankle in the 1-0 Champions League win at Dinamo Zagreb in midweek. Coach Mourinho brought his compatriot on at the break to replace the ineffective Karim Benzema but not even the former World Player-of-the-Year could find

an equaliser. The result leaves Real on six points from three matches, one behind champions Barcelona, who romped to an 8-0 victory at Osasuna yesterday with a devastating performance after a poor week by their high standards. “Pep” Guardiola’s side,

bidding for a fourth straight domestic title, had been accused of complacency after blowing leads against Real Sociedad in La Liga and AC Milan in the Champions League to twice draw 2-2. Valencia, who beat Sporting Gijon 1-0 away yesterday, are top on a perfect nine points. — Reuters
