Divided over divorce punishment

Abduction bid fuels fears Nurin Jazlin killers are back By THASHA JAYAMANOGARAN thasha@mmail.com.my HAVE the kidnappers-cummurderers of eight-year-old Nurin Jazlin Jazimin (pic) resurfaced, four years after the tragedy shocked the nation? This was one possibility Ampang Jaya police were looking into, following the attempted kidnapping of a nine-yearold boy at an Islamic religious school in Kampung Melayu Ampang last Friday. In both cases, the targets were children below the age of 10, and the perpetrators used a white van. Ampang Jaya police chief ACP Amiruddin Jamaluddin confirmed the incident and said police had recorded statements from the boy and his family. He declined to elaborate, citing ongoing investigations. Amiruddin advised parents and teachers to be on the lookout for a white van with a blue stripe around it. The Malay Mail learnt that in the latest incident, the boy, who was loitering outside the school at about 5pm, was lured by men in a white van who offered him cash of RM100 and RM200. As the boy approached the van, the men grabbed him and tried to drag him into the van. But he fought back and struggled until he was able to break free and run.

Leaders split on ‘whipping or jail’ proposal

Four years ago, in August, Nurin Jazlin was also abducted by kidnappers using a white van while on her way to a wet market near her house in Section 1, Wangsa Maju. Her parents filed a missing persons report with the police and a search was launched, assisted by several organisations, including the mainstream media and NGOs. Her body was found a month later, stuffed inside a gym bag left in front of a shop in PJS 1/48, Petaling Jaya. A cucumber and a brinjal were found stuffed inside her genitals and had caused her rectum to rupture. It was later determined that bacterial infection had contributed to her death. To this day, her assailants remain unknown.

THE Kelantan government’s proposal to whip or jail married couples who divorce without valid grounds has drawn contrasting views from political leaders. While Pas vice-president Salahuddin Ayub defended the idea and called it a noble move that would protect the institution of marriage, his Selangor counterpart, Khalid Abdul Samad, did not share his sentiments. Pasir Mas MP Datuk Ibrahim Ali blamed the State government’s failure to provide economic assistance to married couples as part of the problem leading to the escalating divorce rate. Salahuddin, who is also the MP for Kubang Kerian, said he welcomed the suggestion to impose heavy penalties such as whipping and a jail sentence on married couples who divorce without valid grounds as it would defend women’s dignity and prevent unwarranted divorces. “All this is still at an early stage and the implementation can be discussed

By T.K. LETCHUMY TAMBOO t.k.letchumy@mmail.com.my later. This way, the husbands will be more responsible and not use women for pleasure and dump them whenever they don’t need them,” he said. “The penalties should only be used as a last resort bacause there are many other ways to preserve a marriage such as educating the couples on the concept of marriage and its importance in society.” However, Khalid, the Selangor Pas deputy commissioner and Shah Alam MP, said whipping or jailing married couples who divorce without giving valid reasons would not solve the problem of escalating divorce rate. “Of course, the main objective of such a proposal is to reduce the high divorce rate. After all, divorce should not be taken lightly because it disrupts the lives of many people such as the in-laws, children and the entire family institution,” he said. “My main concern is that it will be

national

difficult to identify people who divorce without valid grounds because these are subjective matters. “I don’t think it can solve the problem if couples stay married because they are afraid of getting whipped. Instead, they should stay married because they want to be together and because they want to bring up their families together.” Nonetheless, Khalid said, the question was raised and answered in an indecisive manner. “So, it is up to the person who made the proposal to prove whipping and jail term will reduce the divorce rate. “From the Islamic standpoint, you can’t make it illegal to divorce but you can’t deny the fact that it is a serious problem.” Khalid said there were other solutions to the problem such as counselling, which was a better option than forcing people to stay together for fear of whipping or jail. • Continued on pg2

He said the most worrying part of the agreement was the EU’s demand for investor protection which it wanted the government to adopt. Alleged molest victim never studied in Penang, says DAP

THE DAP said yesterday a woman allegedly molested by the 16-year-old son of Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng had never studied in Penang and had never been a classmate of Lim's son. The party's national publicity secretary, Tony Pua, said the woman depicted on several blogs was 21-year-old British citizen Anya Corke, a former world chess champion. He said the woman, who was of Scottish-Chinese parentage, was born in the United States and grew up in Hong Kong. "She never studied in Penang and she's not even a Malaysian citizen," he told

reporters at the Parliament lobby. "She might never have been in Malaysia before but might not want to step into the country after such disgusting rumours about her." Pua said Corke was currently studying in Wellesley College, a leading women's liberal arts college in the United States, and had won many national and international chess championship titles. He said that following the allegations on the blogs that Corke was Lim's schoolmate, "we (party representatives) went to the school with the

images that were published on the blogs and asked around who she was". "We went to the school to look for her but the headmaster and the teachers told us they did not know who she was. We then got the DAP headquarters’ IT manager, Goh Kheng Teong, to trace the original picture of Corke." Pua said the images of Corke that appeared on such "proUmno" blogs as "Papagomo” were taken and cropped while she was playing chess. He said the images were most likely taken from the website www.chessbase.com.

Kula Segaran said major examinations held around this time of the year should be rescheduled. Last week, several Pakatan Rakyat MPs had requested that Parliament be adjourned on Oct 25 to allow Indian MPs to be home for their prayers. Kula Segaran, who is also the DAP national vicechairman, had said the traffic on that particular day would be heavy and thus it would be a hassle for those celebrating the festival. Prof Dr P. Ramasamy (DAP-Batu Kawan) had also questioned why the government had to be reminded about the Deepavali celebration every year.

DAP veteran and Ipoh Timur MP Lim Kit Siang, who was present at the Press conference, described the allegations on the blogs as "dastardly and heinous lies" which had brought shame to Malaysia. “She (Corke) is one of the youngest among the 300 chess grandmasters in the world and I hope the 30-odd blogs will be forthcoming enough to admit the lies they have been spreading,” he said. Kit Siang said "Malaysia has plummeted into the lowest of gutter politics by spreading such lies" and added that he left it to Guan Eng to decide if he wanted to take legal action against the blogs.

Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mu l i a , w h o m a d e t h e announcement yesterday, said the request was made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak. “The Prime Minister, as leader of the House, has requested that the Dewan Rakyat does not meet on Oct 25 as it is the eve of Deepavali,” he said at the start of yesterday's sitting. Pandikar Amin said all the questions prepared for Oct 25 would be answered in writing. M. Pua also called on Umno Youth leader Khairy Jamaluddin to withdraw his tweet on Tuesday which said “Mungkin dia roboh Kampung Buah Pala sebab nak ganti dengan Kampung Buah Dada". He said the tweet was a lie to his 64,000 followers on Twitter and called on Khairy to take responsibility and apologise. "As a role model for young people, Khairy must show that he is a responsible person and must apologise," he said. Pua also called on the Umno disciplinary board to take action against the bloggers responsbile for spreading

Meanwhile, Ibrahim said domestic violence as well as husbands committing adultery were the most common causes of divorce but there might also be other reasons, such as economic and financial contraints. "The people in Kelantan are currently facing serious financial constrain because of no development. There are no job and business activities," he said. "That is why most Kelantan people work in KL and Selangor. This might partly contribute to the escalating divorce rate." He said Pas or the State government should ensure Kelantan people were provided with basic economic and financial assistance. "For example, if the husbands commit adultery, it is not the State government's responsibility. However, if they divorced because of financial constraint, then the State government should be responsible

and assist them." Yesterday, a local daily reported that State Women Development, Family and Health Committee chairman Wan Ubaidah Omar (pic) said stringent enforcement and heavier penalties would help keep the divorce rate down and suggested whipping and jailing those who divorced with “no probable reasons”. Wan Ubaidah had also said Kelantan had the fourth highest number of divorce cases among the States, with the rate going at an average of 14.67 per cent between 2005 and 2010.

Maids may get one-stop centre

Association backs proposal

It will improve hiring and iron out problems, says minister THE government is mulling over the establishment of a one-stop centre on issues relating to foreign maids and will be inviting related agencies and organisations to discuss the matter. Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam said the centre would handle matters such as hiring of maids at agency level, keeping tabs on employers and discussing problems faced by the maids. for everyone. The one-stop centre is one of the measures in the planning stages," he said after launching the Smart Sourcing Summit 2011 at the Palace of the Golden Horses in Seri Kembangan yesterday. "We will be inviting relevant agencies and bodies to discuss the matter within a month." Dr Subramaniam said such a move required cooperation from government agencies such as the Home Ministry and

Immigration Department and organisations like the Malaysian Association of Foreign Maid Agencies (Papa). He was responding to questions on steps taken by the government to curb maid abuse in light of the Cambodian government's decision to ban its nationals from being employed as maids in Malaysia. In addition, Indonesia has yet to lift its ban on maids coming to Malaysia despite having recently signed an agreement to do so. On Monday, Bukit Aman

Foreign arrivals to clear Immigration within 15 minutes

FLEXI COUNTERS: The upgrade at LCCT's Immigration will not jeopardise security — Pic: Ashraf Shamsul Azlan

FOREIGNERS entering the country can expect to wait no longer than 15 minutes when passing through Immigration at the Low-Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) effective immediately. KL International Airport (KLIA)Immigration head Mohd Zulfikar Ahmad said the Immigration Department is upgrading its system after passengers complained they were forced to wait for up to an hour for clearance. "Although the system is being upgraded, security will not be sacrificed. It will remain the top priority while dealing with the increased number of passengers," he said. Mohd Zulfikar said among the short-term measures taken were the setting up of 14 additional counters and the implementation of "Flexi" counters, whereby foreigners could use the counters meant for Malaysian citizens. A fast lane would also be implemented to give priority to passengers with connecting

flights, late check-in passengers, senior citizens, the disabled, and families with young children. "Immigration staff will be increased by 50 officers, of whom 39 are already on active duty," he said. He also said during peak hours, People's Volunteer Corps (Rela) officers would assist as front-liners or ushers, directing passengers to free lanes and helping passengers eligible for the fast lane. The airport deals with about 20,000 passengers daily, with peak hours at 8am and during weekends. During this years's first nine months, passengers totalled 2,625,587 Malaysians, 3,353,184 foreigners and 63,420 foreign workers. In 2010, 112 fake passports were detected at KLIA and LCCT. This decreased to 43 so far this year, due to countries

adopting the use of E-Passports which are more difficult to falsify. "The decrease of arrests, from 1,234 in 2010 to 583 so far this year, is because of the amnesty offered by the Immigration Department as part of the 6P programme whereby those denied entry at both terminals would be sent home to their countries of origin," Zulfikar said. He also said 7,641 passengers were denied entry at LCCT this year compared with 4,576 in 2010. Meanwhile, passengers The Malay Mail spoke to yesterday said getting through Immigration was faster now. Haida Yusof, 21, who left for Mumbai from the LCCT on Tuesday, said she did not experience any hassle getting through Immigration. A European passenger, who declined to be named, said she made it through Immigration yesterday within five minutes after her flight landed at 1pm.

C r i m i n a l I nv e s t i g at i o n Department (CID) director Datuk Mohd Bakri Zinin said media reports of a recent rapemurder of a Cambodian maid in Malaysia were not true. Local newspaper reports claimed three murders had occurred in the span of a week that resulted in the Cambodian government’s decision to stop sending its nationals to work here as maids. Mohd Bakri also said the last murder of a Cambodian was reported on Sept 2 last year in Seberang Perai, Penang, and

the crime was committed by a fellow countryman. Dr Subramaniam said 99 per cent of Malaysian employers of foreign maids were responsible people. "Although less than one per cent of employers here have mistreated their maids, we are concerned their actions have tarnished the image of Malaysia," he said. "We are committed to strengthening the mechanisms to provide protection and support to maids, whether foreign or local."

THE proposal to have a onestop centre to handle maid issues has received the backing of the Malaysian Association of Foreign Maid Agencies (Papa). Its acting president, Jeffrey Foo, told The Malay Mail: "We look forward to the implementation of the proposal and we will wait for an invitation from the Human Resources Ministry to discuss the matter." He said such a one-stop centre would benefit all the parties concerned.

Settlers won't be sidelined in Kg Baru THE Malay Agricultural Settlement Administrative Board (MAS) will not become redundant despite the establishment of Kampung Baru Development Corporation (KBDC) that will be tasked to oversee the development plans. “It (MAS) will not be made redundant because all its members will be absorbed as advisory council members including village chiefs and three office bearers. “MAS will not be abolished. It will function within the corporation while also functioning in a more supporting role to City Hall in Kampung Baru area. So there is no conflict,” he told reporters after attending a briefing session with Kampung Baru residents at the Ministry’s headquarters yesterday. Corporation Bill 2011 after making three major changes to the previous 2010 Bill. Pakatan Rakyat which has been against the formation of KBDC, failed to prevent the Bill when only 28 of its lawmakers were present during the voting. Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim then appointed the state’s representative in City Hall’s advisory board as chairman to its Kampung Baru development action committee. Raja Nong Chik, however, dismissed the appointment and said the action committee was irrelevant. “They don’t have any status in terms of law. They don’t have the rights and power to interfere because land issues are under our Ministry and development is under City

Hall which also comes under our Ministry,” he said. Raja Nong Chik said that an interim team would be formed next month to help kickstart Kampung Baru’s redevelopment programme with a Federal grant of RM15 million. He added the interim team will be responsible in appointing members of the corporation and its advisory council. “This body will be responsible to provide explanation on issues relating the development of Kampung Baru. It will also deal with the redevelopment and act as a coordinator between the government-linked companies and land-owners. “The KBDC is a body that is more transparent because it was established under a parliamentary act."

Over 50 per cent voted in referendum OVER 50 per cent of Kampung Baru residents voted and 90 per cent are in favour of their lands being developed, a recent referendum concluded. This was the Malay A g r i c u l t u r a l S e t t l e m e nt Administrative Board's (MAS) response yesterday, refuting a recent report by an online portal which claimed only 30 per cent of the referendum forms were returned. The government had called for the referendum last June after mounting pressure by residents in the Malay settlements over plans to redevelop

their land. The referendum was to decide whether residents agreed with establishing the Kampung Baru Development Board. MAS honorary secretary Shamsuri Suradi said in contrast to the report, the response to the referendum was overwhelming. “We must understand, there are about 800 lots in Kampung Baru — 205 of them belong to MAS, government, hospital, etc., so you have about 600 lots left. "So far, we have received responses from over 300 lots and the referendum ballots are still coming in," he said.

Shamsuri said this showed the people are supporting the redevelopment plan. Meanwhile, Raja Nong Chik who was also present, explained the referendum could not be measured based on the amount of ballots cast. “It doesn't mean those who did not vote do not support the government or the Opposition,” he said. On Oct 3, the Dewan Rakyat passed the Kampung Baru Development Corporation Bill 2011 after making three major changes from the previous 2010 Bill.

Woman: I was hurt in raid Chinese national questions unprofessional arrest

POLICE standard operating procedure (SOP) has come into the spotlight again, following claims by a Chinese national she was unjustly arrested during a raid last Saturday. Ming Daimei alleged her husband had to pay "middlemen" to secure her release. Dang Wangi police could not be reached for comment. At Press time, Dang Wangi OCPD ACP Zulkarnain Abdul Rahman had not responded to phone calls from The Malay Mail. Relating her experience at a Press conference yesterday, Ming, 34, said she was having dinner with her Malaysian husband, Loh Thean Soo, 37, at a restaurant in Jalan Loke Yew close to a karaoke pub. "At 11pm, my husband asked me to get a pack of cigarettes from our car parked beside the restaurant," she said. She claimed plainclothes policemen were arresting people on the road. "People were running about and screaming." Afraid, Ming tried to run into an alley to hide but a man pushed her to the ground,

injuring her right leg. She said the man told her he was a police officer and dragged her into a white van. She and three other Chinese women were taken to the Dang Wangi police station. Loh said that when Ming did not return, he was told where she had been taken by someone on the streets. At the station, he found Ming bleeding profusely from cuts on her leg but police officers did not help clean her wounds or explain her arrest. "I kept asking them to take my wife to the hospital but no one cared," he said. After two hours at the police station, Loh called a friend who was well-acquainted with the police for help. Based on the friend's help, a police officer, identified as Sim, brought Ming to a hospital at 2am on Sunday, only to be told she had to wait three hours for treatment. "We could not wait that long so we took her to a 24-hour private clinic in Jalan Pudu," said Loh.

"She had lost so much blood she was semi-conscious." Loh said that after Ming was treated, she was taken back to a cell at Dang Wangi station and transported to the Bukit Jalil prison at 10.30am on Sunday. She called her husband on the way to inform him of her whereabouts. Loh immediately went to

the Bukit Jalil police station where he negotiated with his friend to get his wife released. "The same friend that helped to get my wife to the hospital paid the police RM2,000 for her release," he alleged. Ming was released at the same place she was arrested at 5pm on Sunday. The couple

lodged a police report on Tuesday asking for an investigation into Ming's arrest. Loh also said the police had taken Ming's passport and refused to give it back. DAP Klang Legal Bureau chairman Eric Tan, who was at the Press conference, said he would forward the police report to Inspector-General of

Police Tan Sri Omar Ismail. Tan said the police did not follow procedures as stipulated under the criminal procedure code. "It was a violent and unprofessional arrest," he said. "The police were not in uniform, did not inform the suspect of the offence and ignored her injury."

Fugitive finally caught to face murder charge

Ah Kow gang use jungle to strip cars

CAR theft syndicates which strip vehicles for their parts, usually do the job in workshops or warehouses, but the Ah Kow Gang eluded detection for two months by using the jungle at Rasa in Hulu Selangor. But Hulu Selangor police put the brakes on the gang's activities following the arrest of four members in a raid at their apartment in Seri Kembangan at 3am last Sunday. Selangor Crime Investigation Department chief SAC Mohd Adnan Abdullah said the four suspects, including the 41-year-old mastermind nicknamed Ah Kow, led police to a clearing in the jungle, about 15km from their apartment, where three cars — two Proton Saga Aerobacks and a Proton Satria — had been cannibalised. At the apartment, police seized several car-lock chains,

a parang, wire cutter, immobiliser, walkie-talkie, four false car number plates, fake road tax documents, several identity cards and driving licences, Malaysian and Singapore passports, and counterfeit RM50 and RM100 currency notes totalling RM7,000, and a packet of syabu and ganja. They also recovered four other stolen vehicles — a Proton Waja, Naza Citra, Isuzu lorry and a Yamaha 125Z motorcycle. The vehicles had been reported missing since

August last year at Damansara, Serendah in Hulu Selangor, Setapak and Rawang. Mohd Adnan said the gang would target cars based on the demand for spare parts such as engines, headlights, tail-lights and sport rims. “They scouted for cars at open parking lots and housing estates in Hulu Selangor and Kuala Lumpur and after stealing them, they would bring the vehicles to the jungle where the parts were stripped," he said at a Press conference

at the Bukit Sentosa police station in Bukit Beruntung, Rawang yesterday. He said the gang could strip a car of all its components within three hours. “We believe they have been active since August this year and they used the Isuzu onetonne lorry to deliver the cannibalised parts to car spare parts shops in Hulu Selangor and Bukit Beruntung. There are over 70 car spare parts shops in these areas and we are investigating those involved." Police believe the several identity cards, driving licences and passports seized belong to the owners of the stolen vehicles. The four suspects have been remanded until today and are being investigated under Section 379A of the Penal Code for motor vehicle theft. Two of the suspects tested positive for syabu and both also have previous criminal records for car theft and robbery.

A FUGUTIVE wanted for the alleged murder of an 18-yearold girl seven years ago, is expected to be charged in court today. Selangor Crime Investigation Department chief SAC Mohd Adnan Abdullah said the remand order on the suspect, who was arested in Johor two weeks ago, would end today. “The investigation papers have been sent to the DPP (deputy public prosecutors) and we are confident the suspect will be charged as scheduled,” said Mohd Adnan. The 37-year-old man had been on the run from police after the murder of See Sheau Fang, whose body was found buried in a hole in front of a house in Taman Perwira, Sijangkang here in February 2004. On Oct 5, the suspect and a friend, also a fugitive, who

were high on the police wanted list in connection with rape and murder cases committed seven and 12 years ago, were caught after failing to return a car belonging to a friend. The pair had borrowed the woman’s car under the pretext of using it to send a friend to a clinic on Oct 5. The woman, a 69-year-old managing director of a hotel, lodged a police report when her calls to the mobile phone of one of the men went unanswered. Police traced the whereabouts of the vehicle through the global positioning system (GPS) tracking device installed in the car. The men, aged 37 and 33, were detained in Masai, Johor, about 11am the same day. Both men had fake identity cards and a fingerprint check later revealed their true identity.

Don't 'fish' in troubled waters Spa treatment may lead to infection, says ministry

SOAKING your aching feet after a hard day’s work with therapy at a fish spa may be a relaxing treat but recent news reports in London show that such activities might expose a person to infection. Commenting on the issue, Health Ministry directorgeneral Datuk Dr Hasan Abdul Rahman told reporters the risk of a person being infected by skin, blood or water borne diseases at such spas was “definitely there”. “The reports say Hepatitis B and other skin bacteria could be transmitted at fish spas if they don't regularly change the water," he said after launching an anti-

dengue awareness campaign yesterday. “The problem is the water is filled with fish. Therefore, they cannot add chemicals to kill bacteria as it would kill the fish. "It is unhygienic, at least for public use. Personal use on the other hand is a different matter." Dr Hasan confirmed the ministr y would conduct regular inspections on spas providing such treatment, at least every six months. The issue was highlighted in London newspapers recently when the United

Kingdom Health Protection Agency discovered the treatment could put people with weak immune systems or underlying medical conditions at risk. Fish spa therapy is a popular tourist attraction in Malaysia found in many shopping centres especially in the Bukit Bintang Golden Triangle area. During treatment, customers place their feet in tanks of warm, fresh water containing dozens of tiny scavenger fish which clean and exfoliate the skin. Meanw hile, Dr Hasan named four dengue hotspots in the country — Pandan Perdana Flats, Hulu Langat,

with 10 cases in the last 33 days, Taman Bukit Mewah Apartments, Kajang, with four cases in the last 32 days, Cheras Bintang Mas Condo, Kuala Lumpur, with 11 cases in the last 27 days and Corinthian Condo with nine cases in the last 24 days. However, for the period Jan 1 to Oct 15, there has been a significant 61 per cent decrease of reported dengue cases — 15,524 cases reported this year compared with 39,264 cases last year. Dr Hasan also pointed out there has been a 78 per cent decrease in dengue related deaths with only 26 this year compared with 117 for the same period last year.

Police believe the items arrived from China a week ago, and the suspect acted as the wholesaler and supplier to certain parties which the police are tracing. “If not for the tip-off, these firecrackers may now be in the market as Deepavali and Christmas are just around the corner,” said Mohan. When police raided the apartment, two unfurnished

rooms were found stacked with boxes of pyrotechnics. “It took police officers almost two hours to bring out almost 50 boxes of the firecrackers from the apartment,” said Mohan. Checks on the suspect's background showed no criminal record. He had been staying in the apartment alone for the last six months. Mohan said the suspect’s job in the public sector had nothing to do with his smuggling activities. The case is being investigated under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957 for possession which provides a maximum jail term of seven years or a fine of up to RM10,000, or both. Mohan advised the public not to buy firecrackers as they could also be charged for possession.

Danger crossing

City Hall says faulty Jln P. Ramlee traffic signals to be fixed by Monday R. JAYADEVAN has had enough of risking his life crossing busy Jalan P. Ramlee to work due to a faulty set of traffic-cum-pedestrian crossing lights. He claims the signals malfunctioned in August and they had not been rectified since. JAYADEVAN says since the faulty signals are also located near the KLCC LRT station, the lives of hundreds of office workers crossing the road daily are at stake. JAYADEVAN claims repeated complaints to City Hall have not resulted in getting the lights back up again.

“I was initially told they were out at the request of traffic police but I had never seen any of their personnel stationed there." He says he was later told the problem was due to a faulty underground cable. “I was told to contact a City Hall engineer but he never answered my calls." JAYADEVAN wants the local authority to shed some light on the matter. ● CITY HALL Public Relations officer Zurida Hashim explains this is not a normal traffic signal malfunction. "It is a little more com-

plicated as there is a faulty cable leading up to the traffic lights. "Our engineers are aware of it but repairs will take some time as we need to replace and reset the whole system." She says City Hall has to repair the road after it has replaced the cables, adding the traffic signals are expected to be operational from Oct 24. When contacted, JAYADEVAN hopes they are up and running as soon as possible as the problem has inconvenienced both pedestrians and motorists.

'Missing' premium payment R. ANAND has been an AIA Insurance policyholder for more than a decade. "I have arranged with my bank to forward payments for both my policies, via standing instructions, on the 18th of each month,” he says, adding he has had no problem meeting them, that is, until September. "Last month, I received a

letter from AIA Insurance stating I had not met my August payment. My bank statement for August, however, showed the premium was paid." ANAND says he immediately contacted the insurance firm's customer service to inform it of this and later faxed over the relevant documents requested of him.

Department's pensions division counters are open from Mondays to Fridays, 7.30am-12.15pm and 2.45pm-5pm. 3. The Subang Jaya Municipal Council health department's cleanup crews are now checking back alleys and drains. The public are advised not to dump into drains while restaurant owners are warned to keep their premises clean to avoid compounds of up to RM2,000.

Despite this, he says he received another letter from AIA Insurance insisting he had not paid the August premium. ANAND points out the letter had no signature and was issued by the company’s policy owner service department. “What type of customer service is this? They sent me a letter with no signature or no

name undersigned to assume responsibility for the letter.” An irate ANAND cannot understand why customer service insists he has yet to pay the premium despite facts presented to them. ● THE American International Assurance Bhd explains there has been a technical glitch which did

not capture ANAND’s premiums. Its corporate communications department vice president, P. Mala, says the problem has since been resolved. "Our customer service personnel has contacted ANAND and updated him regarding his payment records. His premiums have now been captured accordingly."

On the unsigned letter, Mala says it is system-generated to notify customers on non-receipt of premiums to avoid “lapsation of policies". Meanwhile, ANAND confirms AIA Insurance has called and emailed him the explanation and apology for the technical glitch.

Some media reports had suggested the 43-year-old first lady was to give birth later in the day. Violence mars huge austerity demonstrations

BRAZIL'S National Advertising Council denied a request to ban a television ad featuring lingerie-clad supermodel Gisele Bundchen (pic) after a government agency called it sexist. "The stereotypes in this ad campaign are common in society, easily identifiable and do not denigrate women," the Council's members said. Brazil's Ministry for Women submitted a request last month to suspend the ad, saying it reinforces the stereotype of women as sex objects, reports the Times of India. In the commercial for a Brazilian intimates brand, Bundchen is clad in panties, a bra and high heels, in an effort to distract her husband when she delivers bad news — about damaging the car, exceeding her credit limit and her mother coming to live with them. Some men had called for the ad to be put down because it took them for "idiots".

VIOLENCE marred huge demonstrations in Greece yesterday as unions launched a two-day general strike ahead of a vote on a new Bill tightening the financial screws in a bid to stave off bankruptcy. Police in Athens clashed with protesters outside parliament as more than 70,000 people according to authorities, and 200,000 according to unions, converged on central Syntagma Square. Four people including two policemen were hurt, according to the ambulance service. Police said four youths were detained a t the start of the demonstration, with reports

saying firebombs were found in their possession. Tear gas blanketed central Athens as police fought to keep control, while thousands of peaceful protesters braved the clashes and remained on the square in front of the Greek parliament. The violence began when some 200 youths hurled themselves at a steel barricade outside the parliament building. A battle later broke out outside a row of luxury hotels on the square and a department store was vandalised as small groups of hooded and masked protesters broke away from the main demonstration.

WOMEN who are stressed out while trying for a baby could be more likely to have girls, research suggests. In the study, experts found high levels of the stress hormone cortisol were associated with the birth of more girls than boys. Dr Cecilia Pyper, who worked on the study, said: "Women who are trying to conceive are already told how important it is for their future baby to take folic acid tablets, to stop smoking and to check they are immune to rubella. If the findings of this study are confirmed by larger studies, women may also be advised about reducing stress." — AFP

Officers were also attacked in the second city of Thessaloniki where the government's regional headquarters was assaulted by a group of 100 protesters throwing firebombs. State statistics this week showed unemployment climbing to 16.5 per cent in Greece during a deepening recession. Unions say the real figure is much higher, and will hit 26 per cent next year. The new austerity Bill introduces collective wage amendments, major tax break cuts, a new civil service salary system and temporary layoffs for thousands of public sector staff. — AFP

Lions, tigers, bears on the loose AN Ohio town was on lockdown yesterday after dozens of dangerous wild animals, including lions, tigers and other large carnivores, escaped from an exotic farm and were on the prowl. Police with a shoot-to-kill order overnight hunted down about two dozen of the animals in and around the town of Zanesville. Authorities ordered local residents to stay indoors and cordoned off the area around the farm, where the owner was found dead near several open cages. — AFP

'Like' this: Facebook users a brainy bunch

THE number of Facebook friends you have is linked to the size of the parts of your brain that process social perception, a study has found. UK researchers found people had bigger, denser structures in three areas of the brain if they had a big list of Facebook friends compared with those who had few online friends, The Advertiser reports. The study, published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, showed this reliably predicted grey matter density in the right superior temporal sulcus, left middle temporal gyrus and entorhinal cortex. University College London researcher Ryota Kanai said the first two areas were associated with social perception such as perceiving other people's gaze or social cues from facial expressions.

A GROUP of audacious pickpockets has managed to nab the smartphone of Paris's chief of police while he was preparing to board a train, police sources said yesterday. The thieves at the Gare de Lyon train station distracted Paris police prefect Michel Gaudin by asking him to sign a petition and swiped the handphone from his pocket. The embarrassing episode comes as the French interior ministry is in the midst of a campaign to raise public awareness of the growing risk of handphone thefts. — AFP

A presidential guard sentry box was set on fire near the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Greece's foremost military monument next to parliament, before police moved in to clear the area. The attackers also pelted police with broken masonry and refuse littering the city's streets from a two-week strike by municipal garbage collectors, and smashed a police sentry near the finance ministry. Striking taxi owners in another part of the protest who set fire to garbage bins were also sprayed with tear gas and retaliated by throwing bottles at police.

Man with giant scrotum seeks surgery

DESPERATE FOR SURGERY: Warren wants a normal life

A LAS VEGAS man with a medical condition that has caused his scrotum to swell to more than 45kg is trying to raise US$1 million (RM 3.1mil) for surgery to correct it. Wesley Warren Jr went public about his condition, called scrotal elephantiasis, because he is desperate to try and raise the cash for the costly operation, reports NewsCore. Warren's scrotum is so large that he has trouble walking and using the bathroom. "It's not easy to get around," he told the Las Vegas ReviewJournal. The 47-year-old, who developed

the rare condition three years ago, said he has regular bouts of depression. "I want to have real friends and a relationship with a woman," he said. His condition is rarely seen outside of the tropical areas of Africa and Asia and is usually caused by a mosquito-spread parasitic infection. But Warren said he had never travelled to tropical areas and believes the condition is down to an accident in 2008, when he caught his testicles with his leg while twisting in bed. The next day, Warren said his scrotum had grown to "the size of a soccer ball" and continued growing.

‘Trespass’ at your own

IF there is one thing that can be said about Trespass, starring Nicolas Cage and Nicole Kidman, director Joel Schumacher has LIBERATO: Plays Cage and Kidman's daughter

succeeded in firing a love-hate relationship between the audience and the film. Schumacher basically cruises his story by without involving his audience much, except maybe when he tries to grab attention through the jumpy action scenes. Behind the pristine walls of the heavily-secured mansion, Kyle (Cage) is just like any other fast-talking businessman who lives with his wife, Sarah (Kidman) and teenage daughter Avery, played by Liana Liberato. Life seems fine for the family until a group of masked men led by Elias (Ben Mendelsohn) holds the family hostage

Story and pix by LOONG WAI TING waiting@mmail.com.my in their own home. In between the confusion, betrayal and greed, the family makes the sacrifice to pull everyone together or die trying. The premise starts off wob-

bly as Schumacher tries to gain firmer footing through his plot, and of course, being a thriller, the movie does not take long diving into its action-suspense clichés. As always, Cage's performance is top notch and convincing as a distraught man, who tries to protect his family. Working under pressure, Cage excels in bringing out the other side of his character. There is plenty to expect from the acting, but that's about it. If anything, it is both Cage and Kidman's performances that help save the movie from falling apart. Not much can be said about the plot

SUSPENSE: A scene from the movie

COUPLE IN JEOPARDY: Kidman and Cage

To’s gangster film shows how money rules everything LIFE Without Principle, starring Richie Ren, Sean Lau and Denise Ho, is one of the most complex films ever made by director Johnnie To. To usually uses the inner workings of the triad society as the background for his stories, and for this film, it is set against the backdrop of the Greek financial crisis. If this movie was published as a book, the movie would have become an instant pageturner but on the large screen, you need a little more time to digest the complex plots and subplots. From one small incident, a domino effect is triggered until the final landslide, To is good at fishing for the audience’s attention. For those not familiar with his style of directing, it is normal that you would start to fidget about midway, but for trueblue To fans, this would be what they would expect.

playing both the good and bad guy role. Like most Hong Kong stars of

LAU: Great acting Beyond the often-confusing storyline lies a meaningful event, which will make you think of consequences and how life is affected if the world economy comes tumbling down tomorrow. There is an urgency that To

wants his audiences to see and reflect upon, but sadly, it only happens when everything is laid down in the end. In Life Without Principle, the gangsters are all there while several A-listers like Sean Lau get squashed in-between,

today, Lau has set to challenge himself by breaking out of the "cliche roles" and trying on different roles. While his role as a loyal gang member is not as convincing, his appearance in the film confirms his status as a top-rated actor. He can basically mould into any role that he is given. To also uses a lot of psychological warfare to heighten suspense and instead of plunging into his usual style of gunfights aplenty, smashing bottles and spilling blood, he takes his time to establish

his story first before injecting mayhem. To sticks to consistency in style and coupled with steady acting from Lau and several other of To's regular cast, Life

Without Principle works from the beginning till the end. The movie is good. In fact, it is also one of To's better-made films. Slightly slow-paced in the beginning, the movie moves along on its own without the audience craning too much for what comes next. To enjoy this film, it is best to stay for the entire ride and leave things to To as he brings you into a world where money rules everything.

ACTION: Lau venting his anger w

with a bottle

which appears to be draggy and the more the filmmaker tries to milk his script, the more boring it gets. Trespass isn't always a great movie, even from the start. As the situation becomes dire, the pacing also becomes a major impediment. Slightly unpredictable towards the end, the movie is still a contender despite its misgivings, and especially when you compare it to Schumacher’s earlier thrillers like Phone Booth, Bad Company and of course, Batman Forever. So, is it worth making the trip to the theatre? Well, unless you're a crazy fan of Cage, you might be better off waiting for the DVD release. But if you don't mind the inane thrill of hearing the actors repeat more or less the same dialogues over and over again, well, why not? Trespass is the sort of film where you’ve already seen all the best bits on the trailer. At 90 minutes, the movie feels like it has been tied to a long chain is trying its very best to drag itself to the finish line.

along the way I got to meet a lot of people, who, in one way or another, has helped me with the album. Music is my life. I want to share the same passion with everyone else." Taking his music to a new level, the "curious" singer hopes that people would feel the same love and emotion through his songs. "There is a clear story flow in this new album, Do You Love Me. Through all the six tracks, I've been asking a lot of questions about love and relationship," he said. The mini album Do You Love Me is currently available at all major music stores in Malaysia and Singapore.

KUALA LUMPUR: BOWLING

Win it for Beng Khai, says Aris NATIONAL youth bowler Aris Ardila wants a good showing at next week's KL International Open Championship. This time however, he wants to do it for departed teammate Khoo Beng Khai. The 20-yearold died after suffering a heart attack last Thursday.

"He (Beng Khai) wanted to win this. I told the other youth bowlers to tr y and win the youth title for him," said Aris. "It's the best we can do now in his memory. It'll be even better if we (youth bowlers) can win the men's category." The tournament makes its

return to the bowling calendar after an absence of six years due to the hectic national and Asian calendar. There will be an international field comprising bowlers from Singap ore, the Philippines, Kazakhstan and Egypt. Malaysia will be sending their elite squad

bowlers as preparation for next month's SEA Games. The final squad for the Games will be finalised after the tournament. The KL International Open Championship will take place at KL Megalanes, Endah Parade in Sri Petaling from Oct 22-29.

Kuhan admits Sapura to blame for defeat

By VIJHAY VICK vijhayvick@mmail.com.my

SAPURA captain S. Kuhan believes his side had only themselves to blame for the 5-3 loss against Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) yesterday. Kuhan, who missed the match due to suspension, admitted Sapura had got their tactics wrong in the first 15 minutes of the match. "We were torn apart by TNB. The goals we conceded were very soft goals. It should not have happened," said Kuhan. "That was the deciding factor of the match." Sapura were shell shocked when TNB raced to a 4-0 lead in the first 15 minutes of the match. Muhammad Firhan Ashaari scored a quick brace in the first and eighth minutes while Amir Farid Ahmad Fuzi (12th) and Faiz Helmi Jalil (14th) scored the other two. The 35-year-old is glad his side managed to tighten their defence after the 15 minutes of madness and Joel Samuel Van Huizen scored in the 20th and 45th minutes. The match ended 5-3 with Faiz Helmi scoring his second goal of

the match before Megat Azrafiq Megat Termizi pulled a goal back via a penalty stroke in the 65th minute. "The return-leg will not be easy but it's not impossible to turn around a two-goal deficit. We will have to get our tactics right from the start. "We have the capability to score but we need to be tight at the back," added Kuhan. Sapura will have to dig deep in their reserves to turn around the tie tomorrow. Surely Sapura coach I. Vikneswaran will be glad to have Kuhan back and will hope to have less players on the injury list.

KUALA LUMPUR: SQUASH

Nicol advances to semis in Qatar MALAYSIA'S world No 1 women's squash player Nicol Ann David (pic) advanced to the semifinals of the 2011 Qatar Classic after outclassing Egypt's Raneem El Weleily. According to a squash website, the 27-year-old Nicol took only 27 minutes to win the quarterfinal match 11-6, 11-4 and 11-8. "I played a bit defensive to start with, because I was trying to get used to the court and you can't just go out at the front if you are not confident. "You need to get your timing right first. Then, when I got a bit more confident, I attacked

more. Raneem can hit shots from everywhere but fortunately for me, she made a few errors as well," said Nicol as quoted on the website. She will be meeting Australia's Rachael Grinham in today's semifinals. Grinham had earlier defeated England's Emma Beddoes, also in straight sets, 14-12, 11-4 and 11-7 in a 30-minute encounter. Another Malaysian, Low Wee Wern, is scheduled to start her campaign against fourth seed Madeline Perry of Ireland at 5.30pm local time (about midnight in Malaysia). — Bernama

Spoiler Rougerie

France centre prepared to rattle All Blacks' Nonu and Smith

SINCE making his debut for France 10 years ago in a 20-10 win over South Africa, 31-year-old Aurelien Rougerie has grown from a fresh-faced flyer on the wing to one of the side's senior Statesmen in midfield. It is an important role in a team which has blooded several young players on the road to Les Bleus' third Rugby World Cup final against New Zealand at Eden Park on Sunday. On Sunday, Rougerie will line up in the centre alongside 25-year-old Maxime Mermoz, with his 22-year-old Clermont Auvergne teammate Morgan Parra pulling the strings at flyhalf, while 24-year-old Alexis Palisson will start on the left wing. "The young players have found their place in the team and they have brought their enthusiasm and freshness," said Rougerie. "The chemistry with the older players has resulted in the performances that we have enjoyed here in New Zealand." When Rougerie broke into the Clermont team shortly into the new millennium, the 1.94m, 104kg wing made such an impact he was nicknamed "the blonde Lomu". He is now one of the wise old heads of Les Blues, along with wing Vincent Clerc, scrumhalf Dimitri Yachvili, second row Lionel Nallet and hooker William Servat.

FIXTURES FRIDAY THIRD PLACING Wales v Australia (3.30pm) SUNDAY FINAL France v New Zealand (4pm) (Live on Astro's CH 816 and CH 831)

In the absence of Thierry Dusautoir, he captained the team to a 46-19 win over Canada. The only thing missing from him so far in New Zealand is a try, but with Conrad Smith and Ma'a Nonu likely to be the pair lining up opposite him on Sunday, he knows he must be at his best to add to his 22 international tries. "They have great speed and agility and it is something we will have to keep an eye on," he said. "I think it will take everything in my power if we are going to rattle them in any way." Rougerie has strong sporting genes and a deep link to the club that he now captains. His father Jacques was a prop for the side, while his mother Christine Dulac was a star for the French basketball team. His time in senior rugby has been laden with trophies. He has won three Six Nations grand slams and the 2007 European Challenge Cup. However, Rougerie is well aware that he and his teammates must improve significantly from their semifinal showing against Wales if he

wants to cap those achievements with a RWC winner's medal. "Up to now we have not been able to do that (play a full 80 minutes) and will we be able to do it on Sunday, that is the question," he said. Rougerie had earlier stormed out of a Press conference yesterday in another clash between the finalists and the media. He claimed he was tired of the "bland" questioning levelled at him during the media opportunity and walked out leaving teammate Nallet to fend the questions. And after head coach Marc Lievremont had labelled his side "spoilt brats" after they took to the town following their semifinal win over Wales despite him telling them otherwise, Nallet admitted he did not appreciate Lievremont's words. "I did not appreciate it at all but that is just my opinion," said Nallet. "We already knew that the week was going to be complicated enough so there was no reason to add to that pressure. Quite truthfully, I did not like what he said. I do not want to go on about it. "We have a final to play and we are not going to be focusing on things like this." Lievremont admitted yesterday that it would have perhaps been in his best interests to have kept his "big fat mouth shut" after he lambasted his players.

SMK KULIM are in the final of the 100Plus Super Cup U-18 Champions School tournament and they just cannot believe their luck. They will play SMK Kampong Chengal of Kelantan in the final at the UiTM ground here tomorrow and must surely be confident of winning the trophy which they have never won before. The team from Kelantan edged SMK Kajang 5-4 on penalties after both teams drew 1-1 at the end of extra-time. More so after they had beaten over whelming favourites SMK Victoria I n s t i t u t i o n o f Ku a l a Lumpur 1-0 in their semifinal clash at the SMK Syed Hassan ground. The referee blew for a goal and the SMK Kulim players could not believe their luck as they made the final against all odds. "That's football. I acknowledge VI were the better side and had we tried to match them in open play my team would have been overwhelmed. So we defended stoutly and adopted a counter attacking tactic," said SMK Kulim coach Fakrul Rozi. All Blacks' Weepu, Kaino and Nonu nominated for 2011 Player-of-the-Year Award

THE International Rugby Board (IRB) have announced the shortlist of nominees for the IRB 2011 Player-of-theYear Award. Four of the nominees are set to appear in the World Cup final at Eden Park on Sunday with France captain Thierry Dusautoir joined by the New Zealand trio of scrumhalf Piri Weepu, flanker Jerome Kaino and centre Ma'a Nonu. The other two nominees are Australia's flanker David

Pocock and scrumhalf Will Genia, who will both play against Wales in the third placing playoff tomorrow. Pocock has been nominated for the second year in a row, having missed out to New Zealand captain Richie McCaw last year. The winner of the prestigious individual accolade will be announced at the IRB Awards ceremony at Vector Arena in Auckland on Monday. "The IRB Player of the Year

Award is the ultimate accolade for a player to receive in his career. It takes on added significance in a World Cup year and takes into account player performances in all major internationals, including matches in the RBS Six Nations and Tri Nations," said IRB chairman Bernard Lapasset. The IRB Player-of-the-Year nominees were selected by the IRB Awards' independent panel of judges, who are

chaired by Australia's World Cup 1999 winning captain John Eales and is made up of former internationals with more than 500 caps and four World Cup winners' medals between them. The IRB Awards panel comprise some of the biggest names in the game with Will Greenwood, Gavin Hastings, Raphael Ibanez, Francois Pienaar, Agustin Pichot, Scott Quinnell, Tana Umaga and Paul Wallace having deliber-

ated on every major Test played this year, starting with the opening RBS Six Nations match and culminating with the World Cup Final. The IRB Player-of-the-Year is one of 12 Awards that will be presented at the star-studded ceremony on Monday. The others include the IRB Coach of the Year, IRB Team-of-theYear, IRB Sevens Player-ofthe-Year, IRB Junior Playerof-the-Year and IRB Women's Personality-of-the-Year.

SOUTHAMPTON: Golf

Roaring Rory McIlroy, Bradley share Grand Slam lead

US OPEN champion Rory McIlroy birdied three of the last five holes to grab a share of the lead with American Keegan Bradley yesterday after the first round of the PGA Grand Slam of Golf. The 22-year-old f rom Northern Ireland matched Bradley, this year's PGA Championship winner, on four-under par 67 after the opening 18 holes in the two-day, US$1.35 million (RM4.2m) showdown of the year's four Major golf champions. "To birdie three of the last five holes was great," McIlroy said. "I hit the ball well. I gave myself so many chances on the front nine and didn't really make anything. I started to hole a few putts on the back nine." South African Charl Schwartzel, the reigning Masters champion, was a distant third on 74 with Northern

Ireland's Darren Clarke, the British Open winner, last after struggling to a 77. The winner after today's final round will take home US$600,000, twice as much as the r unner-up, with US$250,000 for third place and US$200,000 for last over 36 holes at the 6,845-yard Port Royal Golf Course. McIlroy, who like all his rivals captured his first Major golf crown this year, showed no signs of jet lag after a whirlwind tour of China for an exhibition and a long flight that saw him arrive in Bermuda on Tuesday. McIlroy birdied the parfour fifth and par-five seventh holes. He took bogeys at the par-four 11th and par-three 13th holes but each time answered with a birdie on the following hole. "I was hitting the putt on the line I wanted to, but it was just going nowhere near the hole,"

McIlroy said of his early going, noting that the grains of the greens were unlike what he has played in Asia in recent weeks. The prodigy caught fire after his birdie at 14 with another at 15, then battled heavy rain for a foursome-best par at the parthree 16th and a birdie at the par-five 17th to match Bradley for the lead. "It was a bonus to par 16 and birdie 17 in that bad weather," McIlroy said. "I made up a few shots there. I'm very happy, in a good position." Winds played havoc with shots at times and rain became a factor at the finish. Bradley sizzled after opening with a 20-foot bogey putt, answering it with an eagle at the par-five second and a birdie on the par-three third. He birdied the sixth, eagled the par-five seventh and closed the front nine with another birdie.

best of the best: (From left) Schwartzel, McIlroy, Paul Ray of Bermuda (Silver medalist, 2011 Special Olympics golf national invitational tournament), Clarke and Bradley pictured before the second round of the PGA Grand Slam of Golf — AFP photo

But Bradley stumbled with bogeys at the par-four 14th and par-three 16th as McIlroy charged. Schwartzel stayed in the hunt early with birdies at the par-five second and seventh holes, but stumbled to three bogeys in a row starting at the 12th and took a triple bogey at the 235-yard par-three 16th to fall back. "Disappointing," Schwartzel said. "I thought I actually

played well up until 12. I hardly missed a shot. Didn't make any putts on the greens, and then I three-putted 12 and then another three-putt on 16. That was frustrating." Clarke struggled from the start, opening with a bogey and following with bogeys at the third and fourth holes. He bounced back with birdies at the sixth and seventh but stumbled again with a bogey at the eighth and also tripled 16

before closing with a bogey. "I didn't come all the way here to play that bad. I'm struggling with my ball striking at the moment." Clarke joked that he might seek answers at nightspots rather than practice tees and greens. "After 77, I should probably stay out a little later than planned. Probably couldn't do any worse tomorrow but we'll see." — AFP

MANCHESTER: FOOTBALL/ CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Late 'Kun' show

... and City hero denies mocking a Villarreal player in the process MANCHESTER CITY hero Sergio ''Kun'' Aguero found himself denying suggestions of a bust-up after dramatically scoring the winner in stoppage time to steer them to a 2-1 win over Villarreal in a Group A match at Etihad Stadium on Tuesday. The Argentina international, coming on as a substitute, swept home fellow countryman and rightback Pablo Zabaleta's cross to give City their first ever Champions League win. But after the match he took to his Twitter account to deny clashing with the opposition. "I have no interest in getting involved in controversies, but I have to deny having mocked a Villareal player," he said. "Everyone can attest to my discipline and professionalism, I wouldn't do something like that." City went into the match with one point after drawing with Napoli back in week one and tasting defeat at the Allianz Arena against Bayern Munich in their last fixture. But now Roberto Mancini's men are back in contention.

SNEAKING IT IN: Aguero (centre) scores the winning goal during their match — AFP photo

City found themselves behind inside five minutes thanks to a goal by Cani, but an own goal by Carlos Marchena moments before half-time brought the hosts back into the match. "It was hard but we finally got what we were looking for. Happy to be back, for the victory, and for the goal,"

said Aguero, who joined City from Atletico Madrid in the summer. Zabaleta hailed the importance of the win as it keeps his side in contact with Bayern Munich at the top of the group. "Champions League is difficult. You're always playing against top teams, especially

our group, it's really tight," he told City TV. "It is still open after Bayern and Napoli drew, so we've got chances, but today (Tuesday) we didn't play our best game in the Champions League, so we are still waiting for that, but the main thing is the three points and then we can try to play much better.

" We now have to b e focused on the United game (on Sunday) because the Champions League is gone and up next is the Premier League. "The next Champions League game against Villarreal is away and we have to look to win and get three points to get closer to Bayern." Meanwhile, Mancini believes City are back in contention to win their group after snatching victory over Villarreal. "I hope this goal (by Aguero) will be very important — it was important to win the first game in the Champions League. Anything can happen in this group, for first place. "We know we should go to Villarreal in 15 days, it will be an important game for us. Villarreal are a good team and play football very well. "In the Champions League when you get one chance you must score, otherwise the game can go the other way. "We had a lot of chances and I think we deserved to win the game."

MADRID

Mourinho keeps cool as Real continue fiery run REAL MADRID manager Jose Mourinho refuses to get carried away by his side's impressive form. Since their disappointment of taking just one point from Primera Liga games at Levante and Racing Santander last month, Real have registered five successive victories, scoring 21 goals and conceding just three in the process. Los Blancos thrashed Lyon 4-0 in their Champions League match at Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday — a result which leaves them

five points clear at the top of Group D after just three games and already within touching distance of a place in the knockout stages. Mourinho, whose side are also just one point behind top two Barcelona and Levante in Primera Liga, was pleased with the victory and his team's form, but he is staying grounded. "I don't know if we are in the best moment since I arrived. Not long ago we dropped five points in the league," he told AS. "I like

many things and others can be improved on, but we are in a nice positive moment. "But we have a difficult fixture list. We are facing Malaga, Villarreal and Real Sociedad (in the league) without barely a break. We need to see how these games go before talking about a good run of form." Real took the lead against Lyon when France international Karim Benzema struck against his former club in the 18th minute. Sami Khedira made it 2-0

just after half-time before a Hugo Lloris own goal and a late Sergio Ramos strike completed the scoring for Real, who have yet to concede in Europe this season. Mourinho, back on the touchline after serving his Uefa ban, said: "We played well. From the first minute, I had the feeling we were going to win this game. And it was important because we have nine points, with Lyon and Ajax on four. "We have almost qualified and now what we need is to

finish first. In principle, that gives you an advantage." The former Inter Milan and Chelsea boss also dismissed any suggestion that his side were drawn in a favourable pool. "In our group, we have a great French team, a great Dutch team and the champions of Croatia (Dinamo Zagreb)," he said. "In others, the big teams are more fortunate because I've had to look on the Internet to know where some of their opponents are from.

LILLE

Troubled Inter set to bounce back, says Motta

INTER MILAN midfielder Thiago Motta stressed they will soon return to winning ways if they perform like they did in Tuesday's 1-0 Champions League Group B match win away over Lille at Stade Lille-Metropole. Inter have been struggling to find their best form in the opening months of the current season but a solitary Giampaolo Pazzini strike

was enough to secure the full three points, much to Motta's satisfaction. "It was a very important win against a team who play good football," he told Mediaset Premium. "However, we mustn't forget the league, we must remember that this isn't a great situation we're in. Playing as we did today ( Tu e s d a y ) , w e ' l l s o o n

straighten the ship. "In the second-half, we did well to keep the game under control. We're a team, and when we play with this character and desire, we are a strong side," said the 29-year-old. Inter have climbed to the top of the group with the win, having collected six points from three games. CSKA Moscow and Trabzonspor

are level on four points behind them, while Lille sit bottom with two points. Meanwhile, Pazzini is delighted with his goal. The Italy international buried a fierce volley past goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama midway through the first-half. It was his second goal in three matches in the Champions League. "We needed to win against

Lille and I am happy to have scored the decisive goal," the former Sampdoria star told Sky Sport Italia. "We know there is still plenty of work to do, but after this win I am sure we will improve. Now we have to look ahead as this was an important result for us." Inte r ' s ne x t m atch is against Chievo in Serie A this weekend.

Real to go in for van Persie ARSENE WENGER may have to fight off a bid in excess of £30 million from Real Madrid for Robin van Persie in January. Jose Mourinho is rumoured to be following the Dutch striker closely and it is well known that he will only have 18 months left on his deal once the transfer window opens, which could force Arsenal to accept an offer. The Gunners are desperately trying to negotiate a new deal with the in-form striker, who Arsene Wenger said showed his commitment to the club through his matchwinning performance against Sunderland on Sunday. However, the 28-year-old is stalling on a new deal until the end of the season when he can review the ambition of the club.

FOOTBALL chiefs were left shocked after more than 100 players at this summer's U-17 World Cup in Mexico failed drugs tests — because of contaminated meat. Fifa's medical chief Jiri Dvorak (pic) revealed results showed kids from 19 of the 24 squads tested positive for banned drug clenbuterol, which was found in food samples from hotels used at the tournament.

CHELSEA target Hulk has hinted a move could be on the horizon even though Porto have slapped a staggering €100 million price tag on his head. "I have no preference in any particular league," he said. "England, Spain and even Italy and Germany have good qualities, but it’s also nice to play in the Portuguese league. "I've been in Porto for three years, and although there is speculation about my future, I am only focused on my club. I have a contract here for five years. If I ever have to go then I will, but I am very confident about my future." New Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas is keen on linking up with the Brazilian striker once more but even Blues bankroller Roman Abramovich would balk at Porto's astonishing valuation.

Bucharest hell Red Devils given tough ride by Galati before winning

MANCHESTER UNITED midfielder Michael Carrick said the Red Devils were not surprised by the tough game Otelul Galati gave them in their Group C clash in Bucharest on Tuesday before winning 2-0. Striker Wayne Rooney scored two second-half penalties but United also had Nemanja Vidic sent-off as both sides ended the game with 10 players. "We expected it to be hard," Carrick told Sky Sports. "We knew it was going to be tough, we had to be patient and in the end we came through. You go into the game expecting a tough game and anything else is a bonus." Carrick also claimed the sending-off of Vidic was not clear-cut. "It was a dubious sending-off at best and we're disappointed with that," he said. United b oss Sir Alex Ferguson said Vidic's red card was harsh but could understand why he was sent-off. On his return from a calf injury which has kept him out for two months, Vidic was shown red by German referee Felix Brych during the secondhalf for a challenge on Gabriel Giurgiu. Vidic was stunned by the decision, which definitely rules him out of the return clash with the Romanian champions at Old Trafford in a fortnight but, as with Rooney recently, Uefa reserve the right to increase the punishment if

they see fit. "I've looked at it and his foot is certainly high," said Ferguson. "I can understand the referee's interpretation of the incident. Maybe it's a bit different in Germany, but I thought it was a little harsh. It was certainly a booking." Thankfully for United, it didn't stop them coming out on top, courtesy of Rooney's two goals. Rooney now becomes the highest English scorer in the Champions League with 26 and at least ensures his recent troubles will not bother him too much heading into Sunday's big Manchester derby in the Premier League after Ferguson left him out of last weekend's draw at Liverpool due to his dejected reaction to the Montenegro dismissal in the Euro 2012 qualifiers while playing for England. Rooney's efforts also allowed United to claim their first win in this season's competition and move into second spot

in the group, behind Benfica after drawing their opening two matches. United were unconvincing at times though, giving away possession far too easily, particularly in the first-half, although Ferguson claims he was never concerned. "I don't think we were lucky. We were the better team. We dominated possession and improved in the second-half, particularly through Nani, Anderson and Rooney," he said. "Those three players changed the game. I wasn't concerned at half-time but I knew what I needed to say to the players. "We had possession but we didn't have any penetration. We needed more of that and in the second-half we played Rooney further up the field. That made a difference. "We are pleased after drawing the first two games. That created a certain pressure but we acquired a victory tonight and we're happy with that."

Hulk may move despite price tag

Gomez apologises for missed penalty as Bayern held BAYERN MUNICH'S prolific striker Mario Gomez expressed his disappointment at missing a penalty in their 1-1 draw with Napoli in a Group A match at Stadio San Paolo on Tuesday. Gomez had an opportunity to give Bayern the lead from the spot in the 49th minute, but his attempt was saved by Napoli goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis. "I have to apologise to the team for missing the penalty. My idea was to aim for the centre of the goal — but somehow I sent it low and to the right. You should always stick with the first thing you think of," he told his clubs's website. "But we still had enough chances to win it. At the final whistle, you walk off the field basically satisfied with a point,

but dissatisfied because you could have won. "We now have consecutive home matches against Napoli and Villarreal. We have to win them both and then we’re through." Bayern top the group with seven points from three matches and hold a two-point lead over Napoli in second spot. Manchester City are third while Villarreal prop up the group. Napoli goalkeeper De Sanctis admits he knew where Gomez would attempt to place his penalty after watching the striker score one last weekend against Hertha Berlin in the Bundesliga where Bayern won 4-0. "I watched his recent tapes and last Sunday he kicked to the left, while this time I threw myself to the right," he told Sky

Sport Italia. Bayern enjoyed an electric start to the match as Toni Kroos scored after just two minutes. However, the Germans gifted Napoli a route back into the game when Holger Badtsuber scored an own goal before half-time as he redirected Christian Maggio's cross into his own net. "We knew that Bayern are one of the strongest teams in Europe," said De Sanctis. "They are really strong, but we started badly as they kept most of the ball for long periods. However, Maggio helped us to get back into the game and from there we played well." Napoli travel to Germany on Nov 2 for the reverse fixture on matchday four.

Dope wars Son of MHF official beaten up by suspected junkies THE bashing of a 14-year-old school athlete recently has led to suspicions that it was connected to drug abuse by his peers at SMK Seri Titiwangsa. The boy, son of a high ranking Malaysian Hockey Federation (MHF) official, was badly bruised and lost four of his front teeth after several fifth formers ganged up on him on Oct 3. The seniors, also school athletes, believed the youngster had snitched about their alleged drug abuse to a school teacher, prompting the teacher to raid their hostel room at the KL Schools Sports Excellence Centre at Jalan Cochrane. The teacher apparently raided the boys’ rooms a day earlier and found a container allegedly used to consume drugs. However, no drugs

were found. The boy lodged a police report over the matter on the same day. Sources claim the alleged perpetrators had their urine samples tested by the Malaysian Anti-Drug Agency (Mada). However, this was denied by school principal Datin Nor Azizah Sulaiman who had said the accusation was “baseless”. “The matter is settled as far as we are concerned. We have spoken to the parents of the boys’ involved,” said Nor Azizah. “I have reported the matter to the Education Ministry adhering to every standard procedure.”

On talks of the fifth formers’ drug abuse, Nor Azizah said: “None of our schoolboys are involved in such a thing. I have nothing more to comment.” Mada public relations officer Amin Khusairi Harun said it was normal for their staff to visit schools as part of the education and prevention campaign. “We do not reveal if tests were done at a particular school or the students,” added Amin. The senior MHF officer confirmed the incident involving his son and has left it to the police to investigate. A copy of the report was made available to Mailsport. The KL Schools Sports Council, based at the excellence centre, are aware of the

episode but opted to keep mum. A staff said: “We were told about it. In such cases, it is the responsibility of the school to take action.” Efforts to get Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee

Ka Siong proved futile as calls and text messages were left unanswered. Emails were sent to the ministry’s director-general Datuk Abdul Ghafar Mahmud and the director of sports division Ee Hong but there was no reply at Press time.

Vettel pledges Webber support

WORLD champion Sebastian Vettel insisted he will dedicate all his energy to help Red Bull teammate Mark Webber secure second place in the championship. “Mark’s not far away from second, the last couple of races were in some ways a bit rough for him,” said Vettel, who wrapped up his second successive title in Japan earlier this month. “We won the constructors’ championship last weekend which was a big thing for the team, but also for the drivers. “Now with three races left, we hope for the best results possible for ourselves and also for the team.” Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has made Webber’s success his priority for the last three races of the 2011 season. “Mark is a crucial player for us,” Horner said. “His performances have helped us win the constructors’ championship. “He’s had a very strong year and

we want to get him second in the drivers’ championship. “That’s our remaining target for

the remainder of the year — to get him a race win and finish the season in style.”

When asked whether he will adhere to this strategy, even if it comes at the expense of him winning more races, Vettel said: “Yeah, definitely. Webber is currently in fourth place in the standings on 209 points, behind Fernando Alonso in third place with 212 and Jenson Button in second spot with 222. Vettel has an insurmountable 349 points. Vettel added that despite becoming the youngest driver to win two championships, he did not have Michael Schumacher’s record of seven titles in his sights just yet. “That’s a long, long way away,” he said. “We’ve had two phenomenal years and sometimes people start to get overexcited. “I don’t think you can set the target and say ‘Okay, I want to win seven titles’, or something like that. “I think what Michael achieved was outstanding.” — AFP
