Gaddafi is dead

Former dictator’s last words: Don’t shoot, don’t shoot

MUAMMAR GADDAFI is dead. The former Libyan strongman was killed by fighters who overran his home town and final bastion in Sirte yesterday, the country’s new leaders said. His bloodied body was stripped and displayed around the world from images taken from a cellphone video. A formal declaration of liberation will be made today, Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril said in Tripoli. Accounts of Gaddafi’s final hours were hazy but top officials of the National Transitional Council (NTC) said he had died of wounds sustained in clashes. One account said NTC fighters found him hiding in a drainage culvert (below) when his convoy of vehicles fleeing Sirte was stopped by a Nato air strike. Another said he told his captors “Don’t shoot, don’t shoot”. One of Gaddafi’s sons, Saif al-Islam, was at large but was surrounded after also trying to flee Sirte. Another son, Mo’tassim, had been killed earlier in the day. World leaders greeted the death of Gaddafi, describing it as the end of despotism, tyranny, dictatorship and war in Libya.

Thriving black market for workers T H E bi g d e m an d for maids, caused partly by Indonesia's two-year moratorium, has given rise to a black market providing illegal maids. A spokesman for ASK Maid Agency Sdn Bhd said their business had been badly affected by the freeze because Indonesian maids were the mostsought after. "Households which cannot wait for the ban to be lifted have resorted to sourcing the maids from the black market," he said. Reena Raj, speaking for Azam Daya Maid Agency Sdn Bhd, confirmed some former customers had sourced Indonesian and Filipina maids through the black market. "Many of our customers who want legal Indonesian maids have been sending their children to day-care centres although it costs more," she said. Freelance maid agent A s m i d a r y a t i Aw a n g said many households had been hiring illegal Indonesian maids because it costs less. "We hope such employers will seek legal Indonesian maids once the freeze is over," she said.

Maid ban to end Indonesia will lift two-year moratorium on Dec 1

INDONESIA will resume sending maids to Malaysia from Dec 1, marking an end to the more than two years of moratorium first imposed in June 2009. The decision was announced at a joint news conference by Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak at the end of annual consultations here yesterday. "We know that we have many Indonesian nationals working in Malaysia," Susilo said. "We have therefore agreed to give protection and assistance to these workers. We also agreed the amendment

to the 2006 memorandum of understanding on recruitment and placement of Indonesian domestic workers will bring a positive impact to Indonesia. "God willing, on Dec 1 we shall normalise this." Indonesia imposed the moratorium on maids to Malaysia following reports of abuse of Indonesian maids at the hands of Malaysian employers. A series of negotiations were later held that led to the signing of amendments to the 2006 protocol in Bandung on May 30 this year. However, issues concerning the mechanisms to implement the protocol, particularly on

the protection of maids and employers, delayed the lifting of the moratorium. Najib welcomed the decision, saying the agreement was reached as both countries had managed to resolve issues concerning the processof bringing in the Indonesian maids. He said the joint special task force set up to handle the matter had been required to submit a full report to him and Susilo next month. "All problems and constraints have now been resolved. The report by the task force will be submitted to me and President Susilo during the Asean Summit in Bali

on Nov 17-18," he said. "God willing, the moratorium will be lifted on Dec 1." Najib also reminded wouldbe employers in Malaysia not to betray the trust given by Indonesia. He hoped Malaysians would reciprocate with kindness the sincerity of the Indonesian president in lifting the ban, and not abuse their maids. "The important thing is to not commit any form of abuse either physical or psychological because this will hurt their feelings. Don't let one or two incidents sour the whole thing," he said. "I ask that all would-be employers understand this."

Employers urged to be patient By IKRAM ISMAIL ikram.ismail@mmail.com.my

EMPLOYERS cannot expect to hire a maid from Indonesia as early as Dec 1 although Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono announced the lift on the maid ban yesterday. Malaysian Association of Foreign Maid Agencies (Papa) president Jeffrey Foo said it could be early next year when Indonesian maids become available here. " T h e m a i d s h av e t o undergo several procedures, including training sessions, medical check-ups and obtaining work permits and this could take at least two to three months," he told The Malay Mail. "However, those who want to hire Indonesian maids can now apply through our member agents but will have to be patient when it comes to getting the maids." Foo said members of the association expected 3,000 to 5,000 applications for Indonesian maids each month. "There is a preference here for Indonesian maids because of language and cultural similarities, so demand for maids from other countries may drop," he said. "Our government must also come up with a mechanism to ensure Indonesian maids are not banned from coming here again and, towards this, Papa wants to help the government as much as we can." Indonesia had imposed a ban on their maids coming to Malaysia in June 2009 following complaints of the maids being ill-treated, overworked, cheated, abused and beaten to death by Malaysian employers. On May 30 this year, Indonesia and Malaysia signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU), that included the lifting of the freeze, after ironing out several issues on the matter.

Academicians defend Aziz Bari 'Suspension of constitutional expert a dangerous precedent'

ACADEMICIANS have come out in defence of Prof Abdul Aziz Bari, who was suspended over his comments on the Sultan of Selangor's decree regarding the Aug 3 Selangor Religious Department (Jais) raid on the Damansara Utama Methodist Church (DUMC). They believe the suspension, by the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) against Aziz on Wednesday, would have negative implications on the reputation of local universities and could set a dangerous precedent where universities can censor academicians. Universiti Teknologi Mara Policy Studies lecturer Prof Dr Shaharuddin Baharuddin said the suspension was against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's message of political transformation. Shaharuddin likened the move to censor academicians to "taking away the keris from a Malay warrior". “We need to have some

By Asrul Hadi Abdullah Sani asrul@mmail.com.my

freedom of debate and speech. The action by IIUM does not coincide with the politics of transformation by the PM. Why abolish the Internal Security Act when you cannot have freedom of speech?" he said. “Aziz Bari is one of the most prominent experts on the Malaysian constitution so he definitely knows what he is talking about. I don’t think he was insulting the Sultan but he was dissatisfied with the statement made by him." Abdul Aziz is being investigated under Article 15 (1) of IIUM's staff disciplinary rules for tarnishing the university’s image. The police are also investigating Abdul Aziz for his comments reported in a Malaysiakini article titled Aziz Bari: Tidak salah kritik Rajaraja (Aziz Bari: Not wrong to criticise the Rulers)” on

Oct 12. Shaharuddin said the university should examine Aziz's original statement to the media and not the subsequent media firestorm. He said Abdul Aziz was a constitutional expert and his statement was within his field of expertise. “The university should not be pressured by politicians, they are not professors,” he said. UCSI University's Faculty of Economics and Policy Science Dr Ong Kian Ming said he had always viewed Abdul Aziz as a public intellectual who was willing to contribute, shape and influence discourse on important constitutional issues. Ong said Abdul Aziz’s comments on the Sultan's statement was one such important contribution. “In a context of increasing

political competition at the State and national levels, we should be having more, not less, academic discussion on the role of the Sultans on different matters, including as the head of Islam at the State level,” he said. Universiti Sains Malaysia Social Sciences Deputy Dean Dr P. Sivamurugan stressed that Abdul Aziz should have been given the opportunity to defend himself before IIUM suspended him. “The university’s actions will not help but further deteriorate public perception of local varsities,” he said. However, Universiti Utara Malaysia political science lecturer Dr Mohd Azizudin Sani begged to differ and said there were provisions in law where a person cannot insult the Sultan or Ruler. “To be fair, there is also an issue of academic freedom but we have laws that protect the Rulers and we must respect them,” he said.

Keep children out of politics, says Shahrizat KEEP children out of politics. "All parties, be it the government of the day or the Opposition, should not drag children into politics," she told reporters after launching a seminar on working parents. "Just leave them out of politics." Shahrizat was commenting on allegations on several blogs that Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng's 16-year-old son had molested a female classmate. "This is not about Lim's son or whatever but, in principle, we do not bring children into politics," she said. At the same time, Shahrizat said, bloggers should not be labelled as being supportive of

Hotspots raided Port Klang's hub of gambling outlets thrown into chaos

PORT KLANG’s entertainment district, comprising Lorong Cempening and Jalan Beringin, was thrown into chaos on Wednesday night when punters fled following a raid on the gambling outlets there. The joint 8pm raid, was led by Anti-Vice, Gambling and Secret Society Division from South Klang police headquarters and assisted by enforcement officers of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commision (MACC), Klang Municipal Council (MPK) and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB). The area, notorious for its rows of unmarked shops with gambling activities within, had been raided numerous times but the activities resumed weeks after. South Klang deputy police chief Supt Azman Abd Razak said because of this, police

decided to take drastic action by seeking the cooperation of MACC, MPK and TNB. "We are serious in combating illegal gambling activities in Klang," said Azman. In the first raid in Jalan Cempening, the raiding party arrested two gambling operators in their 20s at the outlet. More than 20 gamblers were seen running helter-skelter into the streets to get away from the dragnet. Azman said the team raided 12 premises, the first in Lorong Cempening. The remaining 11 were in Jalan Beringin which were abandoned when the team arrived. Police believe the operators and gamblers had been alerted by their counterparts from Lorong Cempening.

Some of the premises were also locked, forcing the municipal council's officers to use crowbars and electric cutters to gain entry. “We seized 286 computers with online gambling software from all the premises,” said Azman. I n i t i a l i nv e s t i g at i o n s revealed gambling operators allowed only regular or trusted customers into their premises and most were equipped with CCTV for

Azman said all items seized and the two suspects had been taken to South Klang police headquarters for further investigations.

Parents in denial over children's crimes By THASHA JAYAMANOGARAN thasha@mmail.com.my

A common reply from welloff parents when informed their child had committed a crime is: "My kid didn't do it. His friend did!" Selangor police chief Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah described the case of parents being in denial for wrongs committed by their children as a major concern. "This mindset has to change as there is an increase of crimes committed by students, mostly involving theft of motorcycles," he said. "Up to September, 461 students had been arrested for 257 criminal cases. This compares with 448 students and 295 cases last year." He said parents often shift the blame to other students when informed by schools or police their children had done something wrong. "They are in denial as such acts by their children could

disgrace them. They have preconceived notions their children are innocent." Tun Hisan said this could have a reverse effect on the children. "Such students are led to believe they can get away with anything. They know their parents would back them regardless of the consequences." Tun Hisan told reporters this after launching a seminar organised by the Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation at the Selangor police headquarters yesterday, which was attended by over 260 teachers from secondary schools in the State. The seminar was to guide teachers on how to tackle crime at schools. Tun Hisan also urged teachers to change the mindset that crime prevention activities in schools require money and should not use this excuse to avoid such programmes.

African students are easy mules THE sudden rise of drug mules involving Africans could be because Malaysia is a popular destination for young Africans to further their studies. Many fall prey believing they would make a lot of money," he said. Forty-three Nigerians have been arrested at Malaysian airports todate for smuggling drugs, compared with seven last year. This month alone, three Nigerians were detained at the KL International Airport. The first case occurred on Oct 8 when a Nigerian man was caught for smuggling 0.39kg

Either find a spot to

park or navigate through roads narrowed by other parked vehicles. There are more and more vehicles on the road, and parking spaces are limited. In KL Sentral, for example, there are so many office blocks and other facilities, yet, it is so difficult for visitors to find a parking place as most of them are for tenants. It is the same problem in housing areas, such as Pandan Perdana and Pandan Indah. There are so many shops but so few parking lots. Half of them are 'booked' by car service and accessories outlets, restaurants and car-

wash centres. The long-term solution should be to make it mandatory for future shops, LRT stations and offices, among others, to have multistorey car parks with ample bays. In Tanjung Tokong, Penang, for example, shop-lots in the Fettes Park residential area have a multi-storey basement car park. It is good for the tenants as their customers will not have a parking problem and it ensures a smoother traffic flow. — Dan ● TAKE a good look at Taman Mayang Jaya, near the former

Limkokwing University main campus building. It is worst. You have a problem getting in and out of your own house because of roadside parking. — Anonymous ● IT'S the law, no two ways about it. The PJ City Council and other local authorities tow away cars daily. Within a month, everybody will learn the right way and place to park. Building a five-storey car park will not help. These motorists will still prefer to park for free and anywhere most convenient to them. — Sad Faces

It is a historic moment. It is the end of tyranny and dictatorship. Gaddafi has met his fate — National Transitional Council (NTC) spokesman Abdel Hafez Ghoga

Shoes thrown at him as he lay dying MUAMMAR GADDAFI had shoes thrown at him as he lay dying in a final insult, it was claimed today, the Mirror reports. A Libyan told how he watched Gaddafi get gunned down as rebels backed by Nato attacked a convoy fleeing the coastal town. The man, speaking on the streets of Sirte, said he then took off his shoes and threw them at the blood-soaked leader. In the Middle East, throwing a shoe is a significant mark of disrespect and one that the Iraqi people engaged in when the capital fell and a statue of Saddam Hussein was pulled down in 2003. The Libyan leader was badly wounded in both legs and shot in the head and a rebel fighter also claimed that he shot Gaddafi in the stomach with a 9mm gun. Libyan National Transitional Council official Abdel Majid Mlegta said Gaddafi was captured and wounded in both legs at dawn today as he tried to flee in a convoy which Nato warplanes attacked. “He was also hit in his head.” the official said. “There was a lot of firing against his group and he died.”

World greets Gaddafi death as end of despotism, war WORLD leaders greeted the death of former Libyan strongman Muammar Gaddafi yesterday as the end of despotism, tyranny, dictatorship and ultimately war in the north African country. As Libyans on the streets of Tripoli and Sirte fired automatic weapons into the air and danced for joy, the death of the man who had ruled the oil-rich north African nation for 42 years was widely welcomed. UN chief Ban Ki-moon said Gaddafi's death ushered in a "historic transition" for Libya. "The road ahead for Libya and its people will be difficult and full of challenges. Now is the time for all Libyans to come together," he said at the UN headquarters. "Combatants on all sides must lay down their arms and come together in peace. This is a time for rebuilding

Combatants on all sides must lay down their arms and come together in peace. This is a time for rebuilding and healing — UN chief Ban Ki-moon and healing." In Rome, Libya's former colonial ruler, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said after the death of his onetime ally: "Now, the war is over." "Sic transit gloria mundi (Thus passes the glory of the world)," Berlusconi said, quoting a Latin tag. In Brussels, the European Union

said Gaddafi's death "marks the end of an era of despotism". The current holder of the EU's rotating presidencyw, Poland, warned Gaddafi's fate "should be a warning to other dictators in the region and in the world". The Polish foreign ministry said Warsaw would have liked to have Gaddafi "tried for his crimes before a court in Libya or in The Hague". "We hope that his collaborators, wanted for crimes, will soon be brought before the courts," it added. In Washington, senior US Senator John McCain said the death marked the end of the first phase of the Libyan revolution. "While some final fighting continues, the Libyan people have liberated their country," the Republican lawmaker said in a statement. — AFP

Death avoids awkward trial MUAMMAR GADDAFI'S apparent death from wounds received during the fall of Sirte means a long and complex trial that could have divided Libya and embarrassed Western governments and oil firms will be avoided. A senior National Transitional Council military official said the former Libyan leader died after capture having earlier been injured in a Nato airstrike on a convoy fleeing the town. Earlier reports and rumours of his capture had sparked celebrations across Libya and

helped oil prices lower. Had he been taken alive, there would have been potentially acrimonious debate over whether he should be tried in Libya or extradited to the International Criminal Court, which issued a warrant for his arrest along with his oldest son and spy chief earlier this year. Any trial might have given the flamboyant, often idiosyncratic Gaddafi a podium from which to harang both Libya's new rulers and Western powers,

as well as potentially try to embarrass them on issues they would rather forget. As Libya was nudged back from international isolation in the last decade, international oil companies signed deals worth billions. Middle East analyst Alan Fraser said: "It helps the NTC move on. If Gaddafi has been killed instead of captured, that means they will also avoid a long drawn out trial that could have been very divisive and revealed awkward secrets." — Reuters

Bruni gives birth to baby girl

FRANCE'S President Nicolas Sarkozy yesterday described his "profound but private joy" at the birth of his daughter after visiting his wife Carla Bruni-Sarkozy and the newborn at a Paris clinic. The baby girl was born late on Wednesday, and the president, who missed the birth to attend talks in Germany on the eurozone crisis,

dropped in before midnight and then again for 50 minutes yesterday morning. "We have been lucky enough to find great happiness. All the parents here understand our very profound joy, a joy all the deeper because it is private," Sarkozy said later on a factory visit in the western Mayenne region. — AFP

Superb in name and nature

TestDrive: Skoda Superb 1.8TSI The Skoda brand enjoyed one of the best revivals in the last decade or so, thanks, in no small part to its new German parents, Volkswagen which took control of the Czech carmaker in the early 1990s and turned it from a joke into a serious contender for quality motoring Malaysians are By Shamsul Yunos not yet exlifestyle@mmail.com.my posed to the Skoda brand and they will need some time to get to grips with what Skoda means and represents but when they

do, the brand will start picking up fans the way Audi is doing right now. Underpinning every Skoda is the mighty engineering resources of the Volkswagen-Audi Group and VAG is known for producing some of the best engineered vehicles in the mass and premium segment. This is the second-generation Superb, the flagship model for Skoda and this time we see that they have gone for maximum space and refinement. The car is big, the long wheelbase allows all passengers to be Shaquille O’Neal without being cramped. Given the size and 1.8-litre TSI engine, we were quite skeptical that the combination could be anything other than struggling, if not outright asthmatic. Within a kilometre of driving, the engine proved us wrong by being energetic, refined and willing to lug around nearly two tonnes of Eastern European metal at a pace that would make smaller cars with bigger engines blush with embarrassment. With the Superb engine, size clearly does not matter, a light dab on the throttle and the combination of supercharger and turbocharger is summoned to bulk up the displacement through force-feeding. The engine cranks out 158 healthy horses and they can twist 250Nm of torque from as low as 1,500rpm, giving the Superb genuine big-car performance and refinement. Throughout our week with the Superb, the most impressive characteristic of the car is its low level of Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH). The engine size and hand-me-down platform were our biggest concern and we thought that it would contribute to making the car feel cheap. We were wrong. Obviously the Superb cannot match whatever that Audi can dish out with the current A4 and may not be able to stay in the same league as the all-new Volkwagen Passat but Skoda has taken the platform and made it into a believable executive transport. At a pinch, it may even work as a limousine. The suspension set-up is particularly noteworthy for its ability to soak up imperfections and isolating the cabin from surface irregularities and excessive vibrations. What is also impressive is the way the softlysprung Superb still manages to avoid being wal-

lowy at high speeds, giving it impressively Teutonic driving manners. Clearly the car has a lot of potential, the Malaysian specifications is quite impressive, with leather seats, touch-screen central display, dual-zone climate control, active headlamps and 7-speed DSG gearbox. It is also quite packed with electronic driver aids and they include the usual roster of antilock brakes and stability control that is joined by Hill-Hold Control which is a nice feature on the DSG tansmission that can slip backwards on slopes. Another interesting feature of the car is the Twindoor rear opening that can be opened wide like a hatchback or a bootlid. Skoda must have put quite a lot of engineering effort into this feature because it does not rattle or make

any noise despite being a rather complicated mechanism with two hinge-points. Being part of the VAG empire means having to abide to certain standards and rummaging through the vast corporate parts bin for common components, the result is a car that is wellbuilt using high-grade components. The delicate detailing that is found on VW and Audi has successfully migrated to Skoda and this helps to give owners confidence in their new purchase. The sight and touch of familiar VAG stalks, buttons, sliders, knobs and switches gives the car a generally solid feel. Let’s put it like this, the Superb 1.8TSI is almost as good as a Volkswagen Passat. Actually the real competitor for the Superb is the Passat and that is coming soon to Malaysia. According to VW Malaysia, the price of the Passat will hover around the RM186,000 mark and that makes it cheaper than the Superb which is priced at RM188,000. Although the Superb is a longwheelbase vehicle and more spacious than the Passat, there is no arguing with the VW badge.

BMW 3-Series Sedan grows up By Shamsul Yunos lifestyle@mmail.com.my The iconic BMW 3-series is now in its sixth incarnation and from the looks of it, the baby beemer has grown up and looks similar to the midsize executive transport, the F10 5-series. The new BMW face, with elongated headlights reaching along as far as the BMW kidney grille, emphasises the new BMW 3 Series’ sense of width and strengthens its athletic overall profile. The sixth generation of the 3-Series has grown moderately in size compared to its predecessor and inside, rear passengers will appreciate the noticeable increase in space made possible by the larger dimensions. BMW is offering the 3-Se-

ries in a trio of trim and equipment variants — the Sport Line, Luxury Line and Modern Line. Each presents its own individual take on the character of the sports sedan, with exclusive, high-quality material

combinations and unbeatable build quality underlining the premium ambience of the new range. The innovative 8-speed automatic gearbox — which is a first in the segment — opens up a whole new level of driving

experience. As components of the BMW EfficientDynamics technology line-up, the Auto Start-Stop function, Brake Energy Regen-

eration, and need-based operation of ancillary components (including an on-demand air conditioning compressor) also play their part in reducing fuel

consumption. Added to which, the new Driving Dynamics Control switch, which allows the driver to choose between Comfort, Sport, Sport + and ECO PRO mode, gives both models the potential to further improve these figures. This ECOPRO mode helps drivers maximise fuel economy through their driving style, thereby enabling them to increase the distance they can travel between visits to the pumps. BMW will add another cutting-edge engine to the lineup in 2012, when the BMW ActiveHybrid 3 will premiere. Enjoy the pictures first, we will carry details of the car soon.

Some 9,000 entries were received for the Test Drive Kia On Tour 2011 grand prize. All participants who made a booking or test drove a Kia at the roadshow were eligible for the grand prize. Mohd Ismail, 38, test drove the Forte at the last leg of the Test Drive Kia On Tour roadshows at The Curve which ended on Oct 16. “I test drove the Forte on

the first day of the roadshow at the Curve as I had been planning to buy one. I didn’t think I would be winning the grand prize,” he said. The Test Drive Kia On Tour 2011 roadshow began in May at the One Utama Shopping Centre in Petaling Jaya before moving to Penang in August and Johor Bahru in September. The final leg of the roadshow was held at The Curve, Petaling Jaya from Oct 12 to Oct 16. Naza Kia Malaysia recorded a total of 600 bookings from the roadshows. The Forte was the most popular model followed by the Sportage, the Sorento and the Rondo. Infiniti makes its way here Nissan’s Luxury brand set to challenge the establishment with youthful design and strong performance By SHAMSUL YUNOS lifestyle@mmail.com.my LUXURY is sometimes difficult to explain. What is outrageous to some may be just right for others, what is understated to certain people strikes just the perfect note for those who want luxury as their little secret. With such a wide range of taste in the luxury market, Infinity is hoping to capture those who want something different, a brand that challenges conventions and offer youthful, unique designs that are combined with the latest technology. Edaran Tan Chong Motor and Auto Dunia has joined forces to form Inspired Motor, the distributor of the Infiniti brand. The launch of their showroom at the swanky Chulan Square

showed that they mean business and that Infiniti is here to take a sizeable chunk of the Malaysian luxury automobile market. The aim is to have five per cent of the luxury segment pie in five years time. Malaysia is the second country in Asean to open its doors to Infiniti, Indonesia beat us to it by a few months and the region forms a key market for Infiniti’s global expansion plans, which were seriously halted after the brand’s global introduction in 1989, due to financial problems within Nissan. With their books back in the black and healthy encouragement from Renault Nissan Alliance Carlos Ghosn, who is keen for Infiniti to match the likes of Lexus and European luxury brands, they are now embark-

ing on an aggressive expansion plan. The models that will be offered in Malaysia are the EX and FX crossover, M-Saloon and GCoupe. The entry point for the Infiniti range is the EX at RM380,000, followed by the curvaceous G Coupe at RM415,000 and if you want four doors, add RM10,000 M-Sedan. Top of the range is the FX crossover which clocks in at RM435,000. Interestingly, all the models are offered in 37 forms, which

means that under their bonnet is a 3.7-litre V6 with 320 hp and 360 Nm at 5,200 rpm. Interesting features of this motor are dual continuously variable timing on both the intake and exhaust side. The exhaust also gets variable lift and duration, which helps to spread the torque curve over a wider rev range and generally improve on power delivery. On the business end of the V6 is a seven-speed auto-shifter with Adaptive Shift Control and Sport mode. It has the option for manual shift and this invokes the Downshift Rev Matching or DRM that blips the throttle to match engine speed to vehicle speed. All variants get a very long equipment list that includes leather, electric seat adjust-

ments, moonroof on some models, keyless go, 2Gb music memory, Bose speakers, rear view camera, 7-inch centre console display, tyre pressure monitor and magnesium shift paddles.

THE Peugeot 508 has been winning various awards since its launch, thanks to a combination of style, space, performance and refinement. Earlier this week, it landed in Malaysia courtesy of exclusive distributor, Nasim Sdn Bhd. The 508 is a unique car in that straddles the C and D-segment, replacing both the 407 and 607 at the same time. The need to replace two models at the same time meant Peugeot had to make the 508 bigger than the 407 in order to keep the 607’s customers happy and the result is a car that is arguable a class leader in terms of interior space. “This premium luxury sedan encompasses everything Peugeot is famous for — class, character and panache. It is truly a remarkable sedan with emotion at the heart of it all,” said Datuk Samson Anand George, COO of Nasim. The all-new 508, with an onthe-road price of RM169,888, has been billed as one of the most highly-anticipated

The 508 can count a highfidelity stereo system as one of its unique features; A 10-speaker JBL hi-fi system with a 500W surround sound amplifier with Arkamys audio processing. In fact, the overall ambience of the 508 is embellished by the extensive work carried out on acoustic and vibration damping in the car. Like all Peugeots, the new 508 offers an exhilarating driving experience powered by an award-winning efficient and eco-friendly high-precision twin-scroll turbo engine which produces 156 hp and 240 Nm of torque. The 508 has a fuel consumption of 7.1-litres per 100 km (on a mixed cycle) and CO2 emissions of 164g per km. The impressive fuel consumption of the 508 is also contributed by its optimised aerodynamics with a coefficient drag of 0.26. The 508’s front suspension is fitted with MacPherson type struts while the rear features a multi-link set up to ensure excellent efficiency, accuracy and vibration damping. As a result, the 508 offers a new, high-level

synthesis of road holding and ride comfort that is synonymous with the Peugeot brand. The all-new 508 features a Hill Assist system, front and rear parking assists that are displayed on the multifunction colour screen and an Available Space Measurement (ASM) system which aids the driver in parallel parking. Like all Peugeots, the 508 is equipped with the highest of

safety features such as six airbags, ESP, ABS, EBD, Emergency Brake Assist, Anti-Skid Regulation and Dynamic Stability Control which results in a 5-star EURO NCAP rating for the premium sedan. The all-new 508 has picked up several awards such as the 2010 Auto Trophy in Germany where it was voted for the top award in the Import category ahead of 18 other models.

The primary school children from SJK (T) Ladang Sg Choh and SJK (T) Bukit Beruntung were given RM200 to shop for clothing and RM50 angpau for them to celebrate the Festival of Lights.

HOW TO PLAY Sudoku X is a simple variation of Sudoku with the only difference being the squares in white (which make up the numeral X) need to tally from 1 to 9 along with the remaining coloured squares.

PERODUA donated RM3,000 each to three schools and three charity homes for them to carry out their activities in conjunction with the Festival of Lights, Deepavali. Hulu Selangor MP P. Kamalanathan who was present at the ceremony held at the Perodua Headquarters presented the cheques to the respective representatives of the schools and charity homes. The three selected schools were SJK (T) Changkat Asa, SJK (T) Ladang Escot and SJK (T) Ladang Kerling while the charity homes were Divine Life Society Kuala Kubu Bahru, Persatuan Penganut Satguru Sri Raghavendra and Pusat Penjagaan KanakKanak Cacat Taman Megah. At the same event, Kamalanathan also presented prizes to the winners of the Perodua Drawing Contest held recently. The contest was opened to children of Perodua staff based at the company’s headquarters.

The Penang FA are looking for three coaches for their President Cup campaign — Bernama

Gigantic dream

PETALING JAYA: FOOTBALL/ MALAYSIA CUP

Sabah keeper Syed Adney wants to play for Selangor next season SABAH goalkeeper Syed Adney Syed Hussein (pic) revealed he would consider his options and targets donning the Merah Kuning colours next season. "I am unhappy being sidelined for most of the season at Sabah. I feel I need to be playing a lot more to further my career," said Syed Adney. "I want to be playing top level football week in and week out, so I'm keeping my options open." Selangor are currently lacking a solid character in between the posts as seen throughout the league, forcing the FA of Selangor to snap up USM's G. Jeevananthan on loan for the Malaysia Cup. Syed Adney, who turns 25 next month, started his career with the Selangor U-19 team in 2004 before earning a spot in the President Cup team a year

later. He graduated to the senior team in 2007 and even played for the national team at the Korat Sea Games the same year. He left for Kelantan last year and featured for the Rhinos this year. He would also consider playing for Sarawak if the terms are right. Sabah earned promotion to the Super League this season and settled for 10th spot in the league. Selangor, meanwhile, finished third. Sarawak are set to feature in the Super League next year after finishing second in the Premier League this season. They are in the midst of beefing up their squad and have even roped in two Cameroon players — Alexis Ngambi and Kalle Sone. Meanwhile, Selangor are bent on ending their fairy tale run in the Malaysia Cup with a bang.

PETALING JAYA: HOCKEY/ MALAYSIA LEAGUE

Don't take Sapura for granted, says TNB coach By VIJHAY VICK vijhayvick@mmail.com.my

TENAGA NASIONAL BHD (TNB) may have one foot in the final but they will not take Sapura lightly in the returnleg. TNB coach Lailin Abu Hassan (pic) believes Sapura, in the first-leg, showed that they have the capability to overturn the deficit. TNB raced to a 4-0 lead as Sapura lost concentration in the first 15 minutes of the match. When they tightened their game, Sapura scored three and conceded one. "There is no way we can afford to sit back and think of the final. We have to take this match seriously," said Lailin. "We did open them up in the first-leg but they recovered and dominated the rest of the match. Fortunately, we had a big lead by then." Lailin believes he cannot use the same tactics as in the first match as Sapura will be prepared for it. TNB will be relying on Faiz Helmi Jalil, Man-of-theMatch in the first-leg, to expose Sapura again. Meanwhile, Sapura coach I. Vikneswaran is glad to welcome back skipper S. Kuhan. The 35-year-old has served his suspension for hurling abusive

language to a match official in the quarterfinals. "Kuhan's presence will offer the team stability at the back. He is experienced and I hope his presence will be a moral lift for the boys," said Vikneswaran. In the other semifinal tie, KL Hockey Club (KLHC) are virtually through to the final after winning the first-leg 6-1.

FIXTURES TODAY Semifinals Sapura (3) TNB (5) – 6pm Maybank (1) KLHC (6) – 8pm (first-leg scores in parenthesis) Sunday Third/Fourth placing – 6pm Final – 8pm (all matches at National Hockey Stadium, Pitch 2)

tomorrow night. Terengganu coach Irfan Bakti, however, is not taking the returnleg match lightly despite having one foot in the final. "There's another 90 minutes and anything can happen," said Irfan. "We played fast in the firstleg and we need to maintain the same tempo to extend our lead." Negri Sembilan, with a 4-2 aggregate in their favour, will host T-Team in the other semifinal clash.

FIXTURES With a 2-0 deficit, the Red Giants are eager to turn the tables against Terengganu in the return-leg semifinal at the Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah Stadium

TOMORROW Terengganu v Selangor (Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah Stadium, 8.45pm) Negri Sembilan v T-Team (Paroi Stadium, 8.45pm)

TANJUNG BIDARA: MOTORSPORT/ MRC

Rafiq ready to rev it up MUHAMMAD RAFIQ UDHAYA is ready to consolidate his grip on the Malaysian Rally Championship crown as he prepares for the thirdleg of the championship in Tanjung Bidara, Malacca over the weekend. After all, he is the overall leader after two rounds of the championship — in Kangar and Johor Baru — with a total of 18 points and another encouraging round in Malacca would give him a serious shot at the overall title by the time the fourth and final round comes in Seremban next month. In any case, Muhammad Rafiq and his co-driver Sean Gregory in their Subaru Impreza are the defending overall champions, and in his own words, is ready to defend his title again. But he admits he has got a fight on his hands. Karamjit Singh, the nine-time overall champion is still very much in the hunt even though he is on 12 points and lying third overall. Karamjit's reputation and his experience will make him a handful for any aspiring challenger. He will be behind the wheels of a Mitsubishi Lancer together with Indian co-driver Vivek Ponnusamy. And given their sterling performance in the second round in Kangar four months ago where they finished second, will make them a serious contender in Malacca. "I am still in the race for the overall title and I intend to keep pushing hard," said Karamjit, who will b e driving under

the GSR Pennzoil banner. For Muhammad Rafiq of the MRU Motorsports Team, the challenge to keep the crown will be a hard fought one with plenty of twists and turns yet to come. "Rallying is a tough sport. There are so many things to worry about. Your car, the road conditions and your performance on the day. But I have always maintained the philosophy that as long as you prepare your car well, half your battle is won," said Muhammad Rafiq, who had just returned from the Rally of Japan in Hokaido where he finished fifth in the Asia Cup category. The third round of the Malaysian Rally Championship will see a total of 29 entries. For the first time, two environment-friendly fuel cars — a Daihatsu Charade De Tomaso and a Perodua Kelisa — will be entered for the championship. The two cars are the entrants provided by the Greensports Rally Team. But some big names will be missing in Malacca. Cody Crocker of Australia, who won the secondleg in Kangar, and Japan's former World Rally Championship participant Katsu Taguchi, are not in the line-up. "They have pulled out due to sponsorship issues but looking at the field gathered for Malacca, there is enough big names to give the championship the boost and the recognition it deserves," said a Malaysian Rally Championship spokesman.

Brutal battle It's going to be a ferocious encounter between All Blacks and Les Bleus packs, says Read

NEW ZEALAND forward Kieran Read is braced for a ferocious and potentially attritional encounter with the French pack in the final at Eden Park on Sunday. France arrived at the showdown despite suffering defeats against pool stage opponents New Zealand and Tonga, before struggling to subdue semifinal rivals Wales, whose captain Sam Warburton was sent-off after 18 minutes. The All Blacks are now red-hot favourites to be crowned world champions — ending a 24-year wait for global glory — but number eight Read expects France to contest fiercely. "It is going to be a big battle for us. I think the French back row have been outstanding. They have been defensively strong, and they've also got a lot of options in their lineout with Julien Bonnaire and Imanol Harinordoquy," said Read. "So it's definitely a big challenge for us that we are excited about coming up against. It is great to be playing in these types of atmospheres and occasions. "I don't think we can really compare too much with a final of this magnitude, to be honest. I think it's exciting and you can't just rely on it being another week. You have got to take it as a grand final and probably the biggest game of your career, so you've got to really enjoy it and get excited by the

week because it is not going to come around too often in your career." Read and his fellow forward Ali Williams, meanwhile, both paid tribute to the colossal support received by the All Blacks heading towards the tournament's culmination. "It has been great to be a part of this as a player, to be able to see just how well the nation has got behind us.

It's just been unbelievable how much support they have shown towards us and the tournament," he said. Williams said he has never seen the country like this in his life. "I was there in 1995 when we had the America's Cup, and that was phenomenal, but this is another world. I haven't had to pay for one breakfast at my local cafe yet, which is brilliant," he said. "When people are roaring like they have been, you don't miss a tackle. You've got that extra half a centimetre in the stride. It's mindblowing the noise that is generated. It does things for you when you're playing that you can't explain."

A star in the making

HE is 1.79m tall, not bad looking and blessed with a pair of feet good enough to attract attention at the ongoing 100PLUS Super Cup Champions’ School U-17 championship. For Muhammad Shahmin Izwan Abdullah, football has been his only indulgence in his sporting life and he is making heads turn. His height alone would have made others notice him but his skills are equally impressive too as SMK Kulim clinched their place in the final of the 14-team championship. H i s te a m m a te s l o o k up to him for leadership qualities and the coaches plan the team's strategy around his versatility and his commitment towards the team's cause. Naturally, Muhammad Shahmin is the first name to be penciled in the line-up. "But I never represented the district or State at the U-12 or U-15 level in football or any other sport. My playing days are only confined to my school field only. "It was in Form Three that I was serious about the game and coach Fakrul Rozi picked me for the school team. From then on, my interest in the game took on a different challenge. But I still don't know whether I am good enough to represent the State. I hope to someday," said Muhammad Shahmin. He is a key player for SMK Kulim. Someone whom coach Fakrul described as strong, talented and versatile. "I can play him in defence, midfield and attack and he will do a good job for me. He has got a matured football mind. If he concentrates on football I am sure he will make it,"

said Fakrul. Muhammad Shahmin is also an above average student with an eye on science subjects. "He scored four As in his Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia trial examinations last month. If he can combine academic and sports and do well in both, I am happy for him," said Fakrul. But football and the 100PLUS Super Cup final is his priority for now. “I want to help my team win the title.” SMK Kulim will face SMK Kampung Chengal of Kelantan in the final which will be played at UiTM

Stadium here tonight. In the semifinals yesterday, SMK Kulim edged SMK Victoria Institution of Kuala Lumpur 1-0 while SM Kampung Chengal defeated SMK Kajang 5-4 on penalties (1-1 at end of extratime).

All Blacks not champions yet, says France wing Clerc FRANCE wing Vincent Clerc (pic) insists the outcome of their clash against New Zealand in the final at Eden Park on Sunday is not a foregone conclusion, and that Les Bleus have it in themselves to upset the All Blacks. The hosts are overwhelming favourites to prevail, having already defeated France on their imperious run to the tournament decider, which has also included impressive wins over Argentina and Australia. France have reached the final in a far less convincing

manner. Marc Lievremont's men, who have seemed on the verge of mutiny at several junctures during the tournament, only barely scraped through their pool stages. Beaten by New Zealand, they were also embarrassed by Tonga and they were awful in edging out 14-man Wales in the semifinals. In spite of all of this, Clerc still believes the French can shock the All Blacks. "Nothing is written yet... they're not world champions," said Clerc. "I don't feel like a future loser or someone who

has no chance of winning. We're still in the final and despite how we've played so far, it's Sunday that counts.

"We're here because we deserve to be here. We've said for a while now that we came here to be world champions.

Maybe it hasn't been a dream run, but we're going there to win." Clerc points to France's stunning quarterfinal success over New Zealand in the 2007 World Cup and their triumph at Dunedin two years ago as proof that they have what it takes to topple the world No 1 side. "We can unsettle them and do some exceptional things," he said. "We did this in 2007 and in Dunedin a few years ago. That's a big source of inspiration for us. I think the French

teams have always been a bit less talented than the All Blacks, but we still managed improbable victories. "You have to play the game of your life to beat the All Blacks. You have to be at 100 per cent in every domain. We're going to need to be totally committed. But we also have to play intelligently. "We're all alone on the other side of the world. In Cardiff, we were all alone with no French fans there. There's the same kind of feeling as 2007. We don't want to miss out on this opportunity."

'El Illusionista' returns Barca's Iniesta back on show and poised to be a menace to Sevilla

HOLA! Barcelona face this tricky task of entertaining unbeaten Sevilla in what could turn into a thriller at Nou Camp on Sunday (4am). Argentine magician Lionel Messi, as always, is set to play another big role up front for the Catalans in their bid to get three points to maintain top spot in the table. Ne ver theless, there is another player who can be relied upon heavily by manager Josep "Pep" Guardiola and he is none other than Spain's international attacking midfielder Andres Iniesta, who had just returned from a hamstring tear. Iniesta, also known as E l Illu si oni sta or " T he Illusionist", played a key role in Barca's 2-0 win over Viktoria Plzen in a Group H Champions League match at Nou Camp on Wednesday. And in the process, also scored in the 10th minute via a superb piece of skill. The other goal was scored by striker David Villa. Iniesta, 27, can certainly do wonders if he is on song. And after that frustrating injury break, he would love to shine and assist Barca to another glorious season again. Guardiola hailed Iniesta as "unique" after the win over Viktoria Plzen. "Andres, when he's in good shape, is unique, a star player. He works hard and scores more goals than you think, and he has this ability to break down defences which

is so important for us," said the tactician. "He's come back really well from his injury. Last season he was vital for us, and now we hope he will be just as important. For our part, we'll try to take care of him and make sure he's okay." Iniesta is poised to create openings for the front three of Messi, Villa and Pedro against Sevilla. These four, together with Xavi, can inflict Sevilla's first defeat of the season. Sevilla can consider themselves rather fortunate as another attacker in gifted Chile international Alexis Sanchez is still injured. Guardiola would surely have another good option there. Talking about Sanchez, Udinese's Spanish representative and Granada president, Quique Pina, revealed that Barca paid the Serie A side €43 million for his services in July. The Catalans stated on their official website at the time that Sanchez cost them an initial €26 million plus €11.5 million in bonuses. But Pina insists that Barca did not get their man for the transfer fee they publicly announced. "Alexis cost them €43 million (RM104m). This figure does not match the fee that Barca announced on their official website. They claimed that he cost them a set fee of €26 million plus €11.5 million in bonuses," he told Deportes Cope.

The 22-year-old attacker signed a five-year contract which will run until the summer of 2016. Which is which now? Anyway, Sevilla will not have the services of chief striker Alvaro Negredo on Sunday as the Spain international suffered a hamstring problem earlier in the month in a league match against Atletico Madrid, and a scan undergone on Wednesday

confirmed he will not be able to train with the rest of the squad. His absence comes as a heavy blow to Sevilla, who are now fourth in the league on 15 points. A Barca win. Real Madrid, this weekend, may also face a trying mission when they play big spenders Malaga away on Sunday (2am). Oh yes... Malaga have a former Real

striker with them in former Holland international Ruud van Nistelrooy and he naturally would love to see his team stun the visitors. However, Jose Mourinho's team have been scoring like there is no tomorrow nowadays especially via Gonzalo Higuain and Karim Benzema. So it will not be a surprise if van Nistelrooy gets a rude shock. it would come in at the back post. I had a bit of time to think about it but luckily it went in." Ramsey is hopeful the result will reignite Arsenal's season following a poor start to their Premier League campaign and he is also confident they can keep up their form in Europe as they now lie first in their Champions League group. "It's always a great achievement to come away from home and get the win so I'm

delighted for the team and the performance that we've shown tonight. Hopefully, we can carry on, with our two wins now, and keep that going," said the Wales captain. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, meanwhile, hit back at critics who questioned their defensive capabilities after the victory. "For qualification it was a very important goal, for the confidence as well. The game was a bit scrappy and we

needed to be patient but after the first-half we controlled the game," he said. "Marseille defended in a very disciplined way and it was difficult to create chances but you could see in the last 15 minutes we started to create opportunities and it was a question of intelligence, discipline and patience. "They showed patience and discipline. Everyone questioned how we would cope defensively tonight but I think overall we did well."

Wilder celebrations at Old Trafford on Sunday if City beat United ON Tuesday at Etihad Stadium, with seconds of the match against Villarreal remaining, Manchester City's Champions League future was hanging by a thread. Had Sergio "Kun" Aguero not steered the ball in at the far post, City would have been looking at a return of two points from their opening three group stage games, and their chances of making the knockout rounds would have all but disappeared. That goal from Aguero though, in the fourth minute of stoppage time, has given City renewed hope of extending their first ever excursion in Europe's top club competition. ers and fans of the club, while the reaction from manager Roberto Mancini was, quite simply, unprecedented. Sophisticated, urbane, somewhat phlegmatic at times, Mancini has what some would refer to as a typical Italian shoulder shrug in his arsenal of mannerisms — the 'thesethings-happen-what-are-yougoing-to-do?' type of gesture that seems to cut through any suggestion of existential angst. On Tuesday in Manchester, Mancini celebrated like a whirling dervish — punching the air, hugging anything that moved, in a genuine outpouring of passion and emotion that was as endearing as anything we've seen from him since he arrived on England's shores. An element of relief may well have been one of the ingredients in the recipe for euphoria, but there can be little doubt that Mancini really let himself go, and in so doing, demonstrated to City supporters what his job means to him and the extent to which he is committed to the success of the club. In these cynical times, whatever your allegiances may be, it was a refreshing sight. Mancini's delight must also have been partly due to his in-game decisions being vindicated. City didn't play well at all in the match, and even Mancini admitted afterwards that they had been "lucky" to get the win, but his decision to take off Adam Johnson before half-time (the England winger was not happy), and introduce Aguero after the hour mark, proved to be insightful and effective.

GameOn with Andrew Leci Let's also bear in mind that Mancini's substitutions in recent history haven't met with unqualified success — Edin Dzeko throwing "a right strop" when withdrawn against Bayern Munich, and Carlos Tevez refusing to play in the very same game. Mancini could perhaps have been forgiven for being tentative about making changes on Tuesday, but he wasn't, and City are still in with a great shout of emerging from the Champions League group stage at the first time of asking. They're also not too badly placed in terms of the Premier League title, ahead of their biggest test of the season to date. Sunday sees what it undoubtedly the most eagerly awaited Manchester derby in many a year, coming as it does with the light blue side ahead of the red in the standings, for the first time since... the statisticians are still working on it, and I'm still scratching my head. We may well get to see the extent to which the power balance in Manchester has changed, if indeed it has, as well as whether City are genuine title contenders this season. It will also be an opportunity to gauge Mancini's mindset, bearing in mind the criticism he has come in for in terms of the occasionally negative tactics he has deployed since arriving at the club. City though are top of the

table, and while they won't be the favourites at Old Trafford — no side ever are, surely — they have to be in with as good a chance as at any time in the 37 years since Denis Law's infamous backheel secured the points for City, and condemned United to relegation. Stone Roses bassist Mani was once asked if the band would ever get back together. He remarked that it would happen "the day after Manchester City win the European Cup". This week, the Manchester group that split up more than 15 years ago, but which, at their height, was regarded as among the most influential British artists of all time, announced that they are reforming. While one win against Villarreal doesn't suggest that Champions League glory is just around the corner for Mancini's expensively-assembled outfit, stranger things have been known to happen. Winning the Premier League may also not be quite as unlikely or as far fetched as, say, the Stone Roses getting back together, and on Sunday at the Theatre of Dreams, there'll be thousands of fans in light blue just desperate to see the "mad" put back in "Madchester".  Catch Andrew Leci on Monday Night Verdict every Monday at 8pm on ESPN and send in your feedback to theverdict@espnstar.com

The Bundesliga outfit have had a torrid start to the season and are currently rooted to the bottom of the German table. But manager Thorsten Fink has identified the talented Swiss international as the man to turn their fortunes around. Shaqiri has long been on the radar of several European powerhouses, but his temperament and inconsistent form has put major clubs off making a firm bid for the 20-year-old. But with Hamburg in such a desperate state, reports are claiming the Germans are ready to test Basel's resolve to hang on to their star midfielder with a £7 million offer in January.

'The Lawnmower' out to maintain City's status as Premier League leaders

MANCHESTER CITY defensive midfielder Nigel de Jong says they will go to Manchester United for the massive derby confident they can extend their lead at the Premier League summit with a win. City are now two points clear of their city rivals. "Of course everyone believes we can go there and win. We're going there as No 1 and the aim is to stay No 1," said the Holland international. "We are on top of the league

so going into that game we just have to be confident and play our game as well as we have been doing. The pressure is still the same as it was last year. But what has changed is that we are now No 1 going into this derby. "We don't have any point to prove. We've shown our quality throughout the season. We don't need a game against United to show how good we are. But it's two of the best teams in England going up against each other

and I expect it to be a great game. "Ever yone was talking about that FA Cup semifinal but we proved we can win. Now we have to go into this game believing we can get the three points." De Jong, also known as "The Lawnmower" feels City's last gasp Champions League win over Villarreal on Tuesday night was timely. "It's a big boost for us," he said. "Every game you win gives you something extra

going into the next game. That's especially the case when you've got a game like this one on Sunday. "The belief has always been there for us. We're confident but United will be as well. They're at home and it's a massive game for both of us." De Jong also insists that City are starting to build a history, after ending their trophy drought last season by winning the FA Cup. "You can't build a history

of winning trophies over 25 years like United have done just in one year," he said. "There's more to come but we are building step by step and that takes time. Maybe you don't get a lot of time when you are spending a lot of money on players. But still you need to go step by step — that's how it has to be. "The other side is that everyone is hungry for success and it has to come as quickly as possible for most of us."

OLYMPIAKOS defender Francois Modesto (pic) found a novel way to detract attention from a failed dive attempt — by pulling down his opponent's shorts. Modesto reacted angrily after he was lambasted for appearing to feign injury by AEK Athens centrehalf Cala during a Greek Super League clash on Saturday. Cala looked totally bemused as he stood with his black shorts around his ankles, yanking them up as quickly as he could to avoid further embarrassment. The game, which finished 1-1, left the two sides joint top of their domestic league, and kegged defender Cala a little red-faced.

Old Trafford magic United to rely on amazing home record to frustrate City, says Nani

MANCHESTER UNITED winger Nani is banking on their incredible home record to see them to victory in the big clash with Manchester City on Sunday. The Red Devils, incredibly, have dropped just two points in their last 25 home games, and they came against West Brom last season after enjoying a two-goal lead. It is an amazing statistic, dating back to Chelsea’s triumph at Old Trafford in April last year. It ensures United approach this Sunday’s encounter in confident mood. “City have a fantastic team with fantastic players,” said Nani. “They are playing a lot of good stuff and it will be difficult to play against them. “But we should not forget that we are United. When we play at home it is very hard to beat us. That is why we are so confident. With a record like ours, we should be confident every time we play at home. We have to believe we are going to win most of the games.” Nani admits United will be additionally motivated, purely due to the nature of the opposition. At the same time, he does not believe it is either fair or accurate to bill the game as being crucial to the title race as a whole. Not when there are

face off: Ferguson (left) and City manager Roberto Mancini will be going all out for bragging rights

so many more matches to face and other threats lurking elsewhere. “City are one of the teams who have been doing fantastically well since the season started. But there are a lot of teams who are doing well and we need to be aware of them,” said the Portugal international. “Chelsea have been excellent for a start. I just feel it is too

early to say it is just going to be about Manchester United and Manchester City for the title.” Yet Nani accepts these games do tend to take on a life of their own with so much scope for drama and tension. “These are the games that always get the team motivated. The team has a different attitude and a different hunger when we play these games. Ev-

eryone likes to play in matches like this one. We hope to win as well,” he said. Nani will hope the combination of two goals he scored against City in the Community Shield, including an injurytime winner and manager Alex Ferguson’s praise for his performance in Romania on Tuesday in the Champions League, are enough to earn him

a starting slot. Along with Anderson and penalty hero Wayne Rooney, Nani was identified by Ferguson as one of the men who “changed the game” against Otelul Galati. Their efforts allowed United to emerge from the trip to Bucharest with a 2-0 win that moved them into second spot behind Benfica in Group C.

It’s a police matter now, says ministry

THE Education Ministry have left the bashing of a 14-year-old SMK Seri Titiwangsa student to the police. The ministry’s sports division director Ee Hong, had in an email to Mailsport yesterday, said they were aware of the incident where a Form Two lad was bashed up by several fifth formers at the KL Schools Sports Excellence Centre at Jalan Cochrane on Oct 3. Apparently, the incident took place after the senior school athletes believed the youngster had snitched on them resulting in a teacher raiding their hostel room.

A container believed to be used for drug-taking was found in the room by the teacher as sources revealed the boys were rounded up by the Malaysian Anti-Drugs Agency. Responding to Mailsport’s back page story, Dope Wars, published yesterday, the email read: “We are leaving it to the police for further investigation. The school has taken action according to procedures instituted.” Cheras police chief ACP Mohan

Singh Tara Singh, meanwhile, confirmed police have wrapped up their investigations and submitted its papers to the deputy public prosecutor’s office for further action. Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong could not be reached for comment as he is in Berne, Switzerland for the 125th Inter-Parliamentary Union. He is expected to return to KL on Sunday. The victim, a son of a Malaysian Hockey Federation office bearer, was badly bruised and lost four of his front teeth during the attack. This incident has raised suspi-

cion of school students indulging into drugs. The menace still lingers among sportsmen as two University KL (UniKL) hockey players failed a drugs test on Sept 27. The duo played for UniKL in the Premier Division of the Malaysia Hockey League. Six national sprinters, had in May, skipped an anti-doping test at the National Sports Institute with a handful going “missing” before they were tested on a later date. Sources had then claimed the athletes were given pink coloured pills meant for recovery and relaxation.
