BALIK KAMPUNG: Arjunaidi (right) talking to Zainal at the latter's home
Police chief goes on door-to-door visit RESIDENTS of Section 14 received a pleasant surprise when PJ police chief ACP Arjunaidi Mohamad came knocking on their doors yesterday. Arjunaidi handed out Raya cards and balik kampung'forms to residents intending to go outstation during the festive holidays to fill up so police could take note of their vacated houses. Long-time Section 14 resident Zainal Ali said it was nice of PJ police to lend a personal touch to their anti-crime campaign for the Raya. "I have been residing here since 1963 and am happy to see the police taking such a personal approach," said

Zainal, 80, who was once a reporter with RTM. Arjunaidi said just like similar campaigns in previous years, police want to encourage residents who are holidaying outstation to inform the nearest police station. "Residents can submit the forms or send an SMS to our RakanCop hotline, with details of their house address and the period they will be away," he said. "When our police patrols make their rounds during the Raya holidays, they will fill up a report card with the dates and times they checked on each empty household."

HARI RAYA means a happy homecoming for many families heading back to their hometowns to celebrate the festivities. However, as families prepare for the balik kampung rush, one 'family member' is often abandoned to a sad fate. So says the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), as it receives loads of abandoned pets during the festive season. SPCA veterinarian Dr. V. Puspharani said despite doubling the fee for any animal surrendered to them, the society has been receiving up to four cats a day. Some who dump their cats there claim they are strays that had been picked up, but Puspharani said volunteers

find this hard to swallow as many of the cats left with them appeared to be well-kept pedigrees. "Year in and year out, especially during the festive season, many people find it difficult to look after their cats as most return to their hometowns, thus the animals are surrendered to us,'' she said. Every year, Puspharani, who has been working with SPCA for the past 17 years, said she was overwhelmed by the irresponsible attitudes of pet owners, who show no remorse in abandoning their pets. "Despite SPCA raising the
surrender fees of an animal from RM50 to RM100 in June, these cat owners to not seem to mind paying the charge and think nothing of leaving the animals behind.'' Worst still, there are times when some owners have expressed outrage when SPCA refused their pets, due to limited space in its pound. According to Puspharani, some owners promise to return after Hari Raya to claim their pets, but sadly, only 10 per cent do. She urged pet owners to be more responsible and not take their pets for granted, saying: "anyone with the right sense of mind, or have bonded with
a pet, would not decide to do such a thing.” SPCA office manager M. Chelvy told The Malay Mail there had been cases where those who have actually abandoned their cats at SPCA before, returned to adopt a new pet. Such adoptions are refused. "Once you leave an animal here, you can't walk in and try to get another. The centre has records of owners and because of that we manage to say no.” Tragic still, a caretaker that The Malay Mail spoke to said not all surrendered cats survive. "Many end up dying as they fail to adapt to a new environment, especially those that have been spoiled by their owners."
Boom time for vets WHILE animal shelters, such as that of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), face an influx of abandoned pets in the lead up to Hari Raya, the business for vets is also booming. Veterinarians The Malay Mail spoke to said they make a roaring time during the festive season as caring families drop off their pets for boarding before joining the balik kampung’ exodus. Business is so good that one veterinary clinic in Taman

Seri Gombak had to stop taking in pets. "We stopped taking in pets from Wednesday but people are still calling in. There are about 30 cats currently being boarded here and we can only take in more if some of them leave," said a caretaker who did not wish to be named. ''Owners will pay up to RM50 to RM80 a night for each cat, depending on the breed,'' she said, adding the boarding cost for pedigrees was higher due to the pref-

erence for special shampoos and food. "We have cats that won't touch wet food and only eat dried cat biscuits, while some only eat fish.” VK Veterinary Animal Clinic in Selayang concurred festive seasons were the busiest periods. "During Hari Raya, we get more cats, but during Christmas, however, more dogs would be boarded here," an employee, K. Purani, said. Even so, Purani advised
owners not to leave their pets at the centre for too long to prevent pets from experiencing the fear of rejection. "Some pets are not used to other people and can become aggressive. It is always best to understand the temperament of your pet before sending them to us.'' She said while business was good, it was better last year as perhaps owners now realised not all pets could cope with separation and had decided to bring their pets with them to their hometowns.

Three years and still counting
Mother yearning for return of son taken by foreign ex-husband THIS will be the third Hari Raya Elis Syuhaila Mokhtar would be forced to spend without her only son, Ferris Mokhtar. "I can't even say it's going to be a Raya celebration, ever since Ferris was taken away. A huge part of my life is missing. Everything I do feels incomplete without him," said the 36-yearold. When The Malay Mail visited her Selayang home recently, she proudly showed the baju melayu she had bought for her son this Raya. "I still buy him gifts and clothes for his birthday and Raya, hoping he will return. Despite each disappointment, I continue doing this as I know I'll get him back." her estranged Dutch ex-husband, Frank Theodorus Van de Ven @ Firdaus, after the couple had a fallout. Her ordeal started when she and Van de Ven filed for divorce in January 2008. They took weekly turns looking after Ferris until March 5 that year, when the father failed to return the boy. Later that month, the Shah Alam Syariah Court issued an arrest warrant for the computer programmer and even requested Interpol's cooperation to arrest and stop him from leaving Malaysia. Elis had known the Dutchman since she was 16 and their friendship blossomed into love. They
were married in 2001 in Malaysia and Ferris was born three years later. For Elis, not having heard anything about her son, his whereabouts, and not having even seen a photograph of him, has been an excruciating and harsh reality. "All I have is Frank's email address I write to almost every day, asking him to at least let me speak to Ferris over the phone, or send me a picture. But he has never replied," she said. "I want to know how my son looks like now. It has been three years. He turns eight on Dec 7." Although convinced Ferris is in Belgium, Elis does not believe he is being cared for by her ex. "Probably Frank's parents are," she said. Recalling her depression, Elis
said at one point, she could only stay home and weep. "When I was fighting to get my son back, I was busy meeting people, from ministers to police and non-governmental organisations, hoping they could help. "When all my efforts failed, I didn't know what else to do." She said even with the support of friends, cousins and her sister, especially, she still could not pull herself together. But things changed last year when she dreamt of her boy. "In my dream, Ferris told me he wanted to come home. I was confused, thinking which home he was referring to. I remember crying in the dream when Ferris said to me 'I am fine, Umi (mother)'," she said, holding back tears.

Waiting for Nini to come home
By CECILIA VICTOR cecilia@mmail.com.my
TODAY will be three years, seven months and 17 days since Sharlinie Mohd Nashar went missing. And every year, her parents do the same thing before Raya comes. "Each year, we buy her a new baju raya and lay it out neatly on her bed, so she can wear them immediately after she returns," said Mohd Nashar Mat Hussein, who strongly believes his youngest daughter will return to the arms of her family. Speaking to The Malay Mail recently, he said he had been living in frustration since Sharlinie, or Nini, as she was fondly called by her family, went missing on Jan 9, 2008. "About six months ago, I called the police to find out the status of my daughter's case, but all I managed to get from them was the matter was still being investigated and they had no leads yet," said the the 33-year-old technician. "What disappoints me most is the cops have not kept in contact with me. I am the one who always has to pester them for information."
HOPEFUL: (From left) Suraya, Sharliena and Nashar with a picture of Nini
This anguished father asked: "Are they honestly still working on the case? Or have they lost hope? Why is it taking so long? How long do I have to wait for some news, any news?" Mohd Nashar said he would settle even for "a gleam of hope". "We will never lose hope in finding you, Nini. We know you are alive out there and we will do whatever possible to see you return to us." When asked how the family had been coping, he said he and wife Suraya Ahmad had been residing at his father's
home in Kampung Padang Pulut, Terengganu, together with their two other daughters, Nurul Amirah, 14, and Sharliena, 11, for the last two years. They decided to move as the haunting memory of Sharlinie's alleged abduction at a playground in Taman Medan, PJS2, Petaling Jaya, was too much to bear. "Earlier on, my wife was too depressed to do anything but she has since surrendered her fate entirely to God. She began working again in a factory and now helps with the family's finances. This keeps her
occupied and helps her move on," said Mohd Nashar. "But I know she will never give up hope on Nini's return." O n t h at f at e f u l d ay, Sharlinie, then five years old, had followed Sharliena to a playground about 200 metres from their home. Half an hour later, Sharliena decided to return home. She called out to Sharlinie but did not get a response. Sharliena rushed home and told her mother who frantically searched the playground. Two hours later, Suraya lodged a report at the district police headquarters. Sharlinie was last seen wearing a light blue dress with white stripes and her favourite pink slippers. A massive nationwide search was mounted and even Interpol was notified. Her parents' plight was splashed in the print and electronic media, with individuals and organisations offering monetary rewards for her safe return. Two men were arrested by police but later released due to lack of evidence. To date, there has been no news of her whereabouts.
NEEDS FUNDS: Elis showing one of the paintings she needs to sell to fund her trip to Belgium to trace her son
Elis said that dream started her working again so she could save money and go to Belgium to locate her son. "I was a fine arts student, I started painting again, hoping to sell my artwork. I also started lecturing on the subject in a private college here since February." She said she would need a lawyer when going to Belgium as there was a chance she could be detained upon enter-
ing the country. "I don't know what Frank has told the authorities there. He had earlier claimed I kidnapped Ferris and fled to Manila in 2007. There's also the ongoing custody battle so I will need legal advice when I go there." Speaking more to herself than to this reporter at this point, Elis said: "I need to save money and go to Belgium to find my son, that's my motivation every day."

Selangor Narcotics Crime Investigation Department chief ACP Nordin Kadir said the couple tried to flee but were stopped. “Their male accomplice outside the car, was arrested, too. arrested a woman there. "There, we discovered three plastic bags containing 1.1kg of heroin. Altogether, the 3.3kg heroin haul was worth RM74,000 and could feed 12,000 drug fixes." The four suspects, aged between 20 and 47, have been remanded until Monday. "We believe the suspects had intended to distribute the drugs in the Klang Valley," said Nordin. The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries a mandatory death penalty upon conviction.

AMPANG: Hotel room murder
Japanese businessman's remains flown back to homeland
THE body of Hirokazu Miyashita, 50, who was robbed and murdered in a four-star hotel room at Jalan Ampang on Monday was flown back to Japan yesterday morning. Selangor CID chief, SAC Mohd Adnan Abdullah said the victim's fellow countryman and jewellery business partner, who sustained injuries in the incident, also took the same flight home.
“We have already recorded statements from the surviving businessman,” said Mohd Adnan. Both jewellery traders came to Malaysia on Sunday, with the hotel room registered in the name of the surviving businessman. Both were bound and gagged by the assailants. Meanwhile, Mohd Adnan said three suspects who were arrested in

the wee hours of Wednesday have been remanded for a week. "We also seized a Proton Saga believed to have been rented by the suspects," he said. "The suspects stole RM110,000 cash from the victims but we did not recover the money, jewellery and documents as reported. We believe the suspects have hidden the money."
It is learnt the suspects are male Africans aged 20 to 25 and involved in a jewellery deal with the victims in the hotel room that was not successfully concluded. The motive of the suspects has been determined as robbery but the case is been investigated under Section 302 of Penal Code for murder. Hirokazu and his partner were believed to have been attacked
about 1am on Monday by the suspects. An autopsy by Hospital Kuala Lumpur found Hirokazu, who had a heart condition, died due to head trauma caused by a blunt object. His partner regained consciousness about 12 hours later and managed to untie himself and then alert the hotel management. Police found no sign of forced entry into the room or weapons.

Nigerian caught smuggling drugs in laptop bag IN what was surely a new but foolish tactic in drug smuggling, a Nigerian was arrested for hiding methamphetamine (syabu) worth RM260,000 in his laptop bag. The suspect, 28, was arrested on Monday soon after his arrival at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport on a flight from Doha, Qatar. Selangor Narcotics Crime Investigation Department chief ACP Nordin Kadir said the Nigerian attracted suspicion as he arrived only with a laptop bag. "He claimed to be a motorcycle spare parts dealer in
Nigeria and came to Malaysia for the first time on vacation but also planned to scout for motorcycle components here for export to his country," he said. "Upon checking his laptop bag, we found 1.3kg of syabu in an altered section of the bag. The drugs were worth RM260,000 and can accommodate 4,500 syabu addicts." The suspect has been remanded until Monday. The case is investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which, upon conviction, carries the mandatory death sentence.
Correction IN Tuesday's (Aug 23) edition of The Malay Mail, the headline for the article on Pg 6 should have read "UOB's 'Smurfs' treats". The error is regretted.
THREE weeks after the dismembered body of a woman and intact remains of a toddler, were found in an abandoned unit on the fifth floor of the Chryssa Block, Astaria Apartments, Taman Kosas, on Aug 3, the motive for the double murders remains a mystery. Police initially believed it could be due to jealousy but are now also looking into the possibility that the victim — whom the Indonesian Embassy identified as Suramlah Nidin — was gang-raped and then murdered. Selangor CID chief SAC Mohd Adnan Abdullah (pic) said although the motive of the murders was still unclear, the investigation papers had been sent to the deputy public prosecutor (DPP) .
By AIZAT SHARIF aizat@mmail.com.my
“We received a DNA report which confirmed that the woman and the infant were mother and son." Meanwhile, the 11 suspects arrested, including an Indonesian who claimed to be
Suramlah's husband, are still under remand order for Immigration offences. "They have been remanded for 14 days for not possessing travel or personal documents," said Mohd Adnan. On Aug 3, acting on a public tip-off of a stench at the Astaria Apartments, police made the gruesome discovery of a woman's body parts and an infant boy stuffed in five plastic bags in a fifth floor unit. The woman was decapitated and her head was not among the body parts in four plastic bags hanging from sharp plaster ceiling splinters. Also missing were her torso and right leg. The child's intact body was
in a plastic bag forced into a gaping hole in the plaster ceiling of the bathroom. Based on the high state of decomposition, police believed the bodies were there for about a week. Police arrested 10 Bangladeshis and the Indonesian man from Aug 6 to 15. The Bangladeshis were mainly cleaners and workers at restaurants and a hotel. The Indonesian was initially detained on Aug 7 and he 'confirmed' that the woman was his wife Suramlah, but did not report her missing nor could he produce documents to prove they married in 2005, apparently without the knowledge of Suramlah's parents in east Java. He was released after his statement was recorded but was re-arrested on Aug 15.
KUAlA LUMPUR: Royal' curry puff scam
Accomplice's wife hiding in Sarawak POLICE believe the accomplice wife of a man, who posing as a lawyer from Istana Negara and cheating at least 44 people of cash and jewellery totalling about RM200,000, has gone into hiding in Sarawak. The 25-year-old woman has been missing since Aug 18, the same day her unemployed husband, 28, who identified himself as 'Tengku Razali', was arrested in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman. The couple are from Batu Pahat, Johor, and police investigations indicate the woman helped her husband cheat victims of cash and valuables in at least three of his scams. "She's an active accomplice

of her husband as her presence would allay the suspicions of their mainly 'mak cik' victims and put them at ease. We believe she's now in hiding in Sarawak," said Brickfields police chief ACP Wan Bari Wan Abdul Khalid, adding they are working with Sarawak police to track her down. Always smartly attired, suave in manner and driving a Proton Perdana bearing government and Bar Council insignas, the self-styled 'warung lawyer' mainly targeted small-time food stall operators in his latest scam, convincing them they have
opportunities to supply their delicacies to the palace. Once he 'hooked' a victim, whom he asked to dress smartly and wear jewellery, as he would drive them to the palace on an appointed day and time. Upon arriving at the palace gates, he would fake a phone call to a palace official and then request the victim to remove their jewellery as advised by the palace official. Once the victim handed over the jewellery to him for safekeeping, he would ask the victim to wait outside the palace gate while he parked his car but he never returned and some victims waited for hours before realising they had been conned.
Police believe the suspect, with seven criminal records to his name, operated under several aliases, employing this 'royal curry puff ' scam since May and got away with about RM200,000 in cash, jewellery and other belongings of victims. Besides this scam, the suspect is also being investigated for five other cheating cases dating back to 2006. The suspect's car was seized, along with the government and Bar Council insignas on the vehicle. In connection with the scam, police also arrested a handphone seller, secondhand goods buyer and a pawn shop owner, all from Batu Pahat and aged 40 to 55.

Vigilance on the high seas Coast guards on maritime duty during Raya
AS we celebrate Aidilfitri next week with our loved ones, we will have peace of mind knowing that thousands of servicemen and women will be on duty, patrolling our borders and seas to protect the country. The crew of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency's (MMEA) patrol craft, KM Kukup, for example, will be plying the Straits of Malacca, one of the busiest trade routes in the world, during Raya. From container ships to oil tankers, hundreds of smaller vessels, such as ferries and fishing trawlers, ply the Straits on a daily basis. It is for this reason the Kukup and other MMEA boats will be on patrol around the country. Kukup had been serving the Royal Malaysian Navy for 42 years before she and

15 sister ships were handed over to the MMEA in stages in November 2005. Kukup and the other ships, that normally carry a crew of 23, were named after the small islands around Malaysia. They are armed with single 40mm Bofors guns and an assortment of other small arms.
The commanding officer of Kukup, Lieutenant (Maritime) Mohd Khairol Saad told The Malay Mail although the ship had seen better times, it was still capable of carrying out tasks assigned to it. For Kukup's second-incommand, Lieutenant (Maritime) Nik Mohd Rizam Nik
Mohd Fauzi (pic), the six-day patrol, which started yesterday will be much harder for him as this was supposed to be the first time he was to celebrate Aidilfitri with his wife. The couple were married only recently. "We had not decided whether to celebrate at my hometown in Kelantan or my wife's hometown in Johor, but then I found out I was
working during Raya," he said. Aidilfitri is expected to be celebrated on Aug 30. Nik Mohd Rizam, however, was optimistic the men of Kukup would be able to concentrate on their duties. And he is grateful he will still be able to see his wife on the second day of Aidilfitri as the ship is scheduled to return to port on Aug 30. Meanwhile, Kukup's cook,
Zaidi Ghazali said he would be too busy in his small kitchen to worry about not being able to celebrate Raya with his loved ones. The 23-yearold had not celebrated Raya with his family in Besut, Terengganu, for the past two years. Last year, he spent Hari Raya on board KM Sempadi, which was also assigned to the Marine District 4, Selangor, just like the Kukup. Zaidi said he would prepare traditional Aidilfitri dishes, such as nasi himpit and rendang, for his crew members. "Hopefully, with the food, it will lessen the longing for home, especially for those pining for their loved ones," he said, adding he was not sure he would get leave when Kukup returned to port on the second day of Raya. "Perhaps if I get several days leave, I will go back to my kampung.

Weighing the options
EC may use either or both indelible ink and biometric system for next election THE Election Commission (EC) is considering using both the biometric system and indelible ink for casting votes in the next general election. In stating that this is possible, EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof (pic) said they will study the legal implications if both methods are made compulsory for voters. He said this during a mass media question-and-answer session organised by Bernama's Centre of Excellence, at Wisma Bernama yesterday. The session, themed 'Latest trend in Malaysia's electoral system and Bersih 2.0 demands', was aimed at responding to the eight demands of the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih) which held a rally in KL on July 9. Bersih's demands are the use of indelible ink, cleaning up the electoral roll, reforming postal voting, minimum campaign period of 21 days, free and fair access to the media, strengthening public institutions, and eradicating corruption and dirty politics. On postal voting, Abdul Aziz said Malaysian voters abroad may also be able to cast their ballots through postal voting as the EC is studying amendments to the Elections (Postal Voting) Regulations 2003. countries they live in. All other citizens living abroad must return to Malaysia if they want to vote whenever an election is held. The following is an excerpt of the question-and-answer session.
Q
Is there a possibility of EC using both biometric and indelible ink systems? is a possibility but A There it will be very tiring and we will have to spend more. However, if we implement both then hopefully it will satisfy everybody. Those who want biometric and indelible ink will be happy when they cast their votes on polling day.
Q
Is the government serious in implementing a new system following the March 8, 2008, general election where bottles of indelible ink worth RM2 million was bought from India but the plan was scrapped just before the polls? then, I wasn’t the A Back chairman but I understand why it didn’t happen because it is against the Federal Constitution to force someone to use indelible ink. Nobody can stop a registered voter from voting if you bring your identity card. Nobody can stop you from exercising your duty unless records from the Ministry of Health show you are of unsound mind. We are very serious about this. You see my face? We are very serious.
We will announce which one (biometric or indelible ink) after we decide.
Q
Is there a possibility of voters bringing their own ink on polling day if the government does decide to use indelible ink? we won’t tell the colour A But of the ink beforehand. It is hard to say if the ink’s colour will not be leaked but there are so many colours and maybe there could be patterns in the ink. But if you want to lie, there are so many things that could be done. However, biometric also has its own problems because anything can happen with the biometric machines. The system is really dependant on the machines, even more so when we will have 25,000 computers all over Malaysia. The computers will have to be flown to Sabah and Sarawak, they will have to go up the river, over the hills, on the helicopter and endure the rain. With indelible ink, rain would not pose a problem.
Q A
What are the weaknesses of a biometric system? Firstly, there are those whose thumbprints cannot be read because the friction ridges on their thumbs may have disappeared. We have to understand that the purpose of this system is to avoid allegations that someone can vote more than once even though it has never been
MAIL Q&A proven. Never in our polling history has anybody been caught voting twice. Our plan is to have a standalone system with no network. That means each polling station can only have access to data in their own stream or channel. Each channel can only have a maximum number of 700 voters and only the top electoral officers can have access to the names. If a person has voted once then he cannot come and vote again but it can be manipulated if the person has two ICs. He can vote using one IC at one polling station and use his other IC at a different polling station but that is a very small possibility.
Q
What is the time period needed to implement the biometric system? on our implementaA Based tion plan for the biometric system, we need at least seven months.
Q
When will EC send its proposals on using the indelible ink or biometric system or both to Parliament? can only propose which A We system can be used but it needs to be ratified by the lawmakers.
Q A
When will the study be ready? Very soon. I don’t know if it will be two weeks from now but definitely this year. What is
“very soon” is up to your interpretation.
colour. You cannot bring your own ink to ink anybody.
Q
Q
Will it be mandatory, compulsory or optional for voters to use the new system? legal team is still studyA Our ing the legal implications. In Malaysia, we have freedom. If a person does not want his finger to touch the ink because he or she is allergic, should we force him or her?
Q
What is the point of implementing a new system if it is not made mandatory? is why we want to make A That sure that everybody will use the system and if they don’t want to use, then they will have to fill up a form for the records. This means that we have to be very careful of all possibilities.
Q
How long will it take to vote using a biometric system? our tests and if everyA From thing goes well, it should not take more than 10 seconds. We have tried, although with only 50 people, but out of the 50, there were IC chips that could not be read. We have not conducted any dry-runs with indelible ink. What is there to test? It is a question of whether they want to be inked or not. That is all. There is nothing technical, the only thing they do not know is the
Will the biometric system be ready before the 13th general election? (God willing). A Insya’Allah We will try our best to use either biometric or indelible ink or both. We have already begun our dry-run for the biometric machines, so six months from now, we will be ready, but we still need to get the bill approved during the coming October sitting in Parliament. However, if Parliament is not able to pass the bill then the current system will stay.

Water supply restored
City Hall fixes low pressure problem at Sri Pahang Flats' Block C2 THREE months after Hotline highlighted the water woes of residents at Sri Pahang flats in Bangsar, the disruption to their supply continues. The residents of Block C2 tell the Hotline roving team they have been without water since last Friday. The disruption affects more than 100 residents who have to make do with temporary water supply from tanks placed by City Hall on the ground floor. M. RAMASHEKAR, 37, says he had complained to City Hall the water pressure has been low since pipe upgrading works were completed on June 9. However, he says, the water supply stopped altogether last Friday.

LETCHUMI: Has to make several trips from third floor to ground floor for water
“A City Hall officer and a contractor visited the flats last Saturday and they promised everything will return to normal on Monday," he says. "However, the taps are still dry and the residents must
continue to collect water from the ground floor.” RAMASHEKAR also says he was informed by the contractor the water disruption was because of a clogged pipe. "He claimed a plastic bot-
tle was found in the water tank while maintenance was carried out but this was never shown to us." P. LETCHUMI, 51, who lives on the third floor, says she has to make several trips to the ground floor to obtain
water for her family-of-six. Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar, who visited the residents on Tuesday, promised to bring the matter to the attention of Kuala Lumpur mayor Tan Sri Ahmad Fuad Ismail.
● CITY Hall director-general Datuk Salleh Yusop says the problem has been fixed and the residents are receiving water supply as usual. He says low water pressure is the reason for the disruption at Block C2. The contractor, who visited the flats last Saturday, says the residents are experiencing low water pressure because Blocks C2 and C1 are sharing a water pump with Block C3. "Block C3’s water tank will be filled up first, and only then will the water tanks at C1 and C2 be filled." Contacted yesterday, RAMASHEKAR confirms water supply has been restored at Block C2.

Then, when I wanted to apply for a loan, I found out they had blacklisted me because there wasn't any money left in the account for them to debit. For a mere RM15, I was blacklisted by Bank Negara for an account that had been inactive for 20 years. Luckily, I found out sooner or, who knows, some 10

PJ: Hawkers fail badly on hygiene at food bazaars (Aug 23)
Sell only quality food
DURING Ramadan each year, we will hear, without fail, of cases of food poisoning and injuries sustained from playing homemade firecrackers. This year, the Health Ministry said 13 food poisoning cases have been reported since the start of the fasting month. More than half of the cases reported in the past three weeks were linked to food bought from Ramadan bazaars. I am disturbed to also learn the cause was stale food sold to customers. All this seems to point towards overzealous traders whose priority is profit and are willing to compromise food safety and quality. To them, as long as they can make money, hygiene and quality come later. Every year, hundreds, if not thousands, flock to the local councils nationwide to apply for permits to sell food during Ramadan. It is, no doubt, a lucrative venture. Having spoken to some of these traders, many claim to make profits at least three times more than what they make at other times. It is this lure of quick profits that sends other "newbies" to try their luck during the month of Ramadan. In the end, consumers are
stuck with food products that are low in quality, undercooked and poorly kept. In the not so distant past, traders mostly sold quality food at the bazaars. The varieties of kuih and delicacies may be less than what we are seeing now but the food was not only edible but retained that original homemade taste and feel. Nowadays, sadly, a stroll at the numerous Ramadan bazaars around the city and its outskirts will show a different picture altogether. Much of the food sold, despite looking nice, does not have that original taste and feel we used to enjoy. A pulut udang tastes more like spicy plastic. A tepung talam, somehow, feels too starchy. The best one probably is the cucur udang, which does not have any udang in it. Recently, I even spotted an Indonesian woman selling nasi kerabu, a Kelantanese delicacy. Maybe she was just a helper at the food stall but, well, how times have changed. I am not saying that is all bad these days. There are still some genuine and honest traders but they are a rare breed. My advice to these "newbie" traders is to search deep into their hearts whether they truly and seriously want to do the
ramadan delights: Traders must ensure the food they sell is safe to eat and of good quality
business. If they do, please do it properly and ensure the products sold are up to the mark. Cleanliness is also important. They must ensure food handlers are clean, healthy and have undergone training. The food must also be safe for consumption. We don't want a repeat of the incident where a girl died of suspected food poisoning after eating food bought at a Ramadan bazaar in Meru, Klang. Rafiuddin Mohd Ali
Malaysians don't mind dirty eateries POOR hygiene at food outlets and Ramadan bazaars are old stories. What do you expect when the authorities approve their licences, and the public apathy about sanitary, cleanliness and food safety? There is no need to look at the restaurants by the roadside or the ones near cockroach-
and rat-infested drains. Just pay a visit to a five-star hotel's kitchen. The situation is no different. The fact is, Malaysians do not really mind or care about all these things. Some even love the ambience of such outlets. Goundamani
KL: Three States may face water shortage (Aug 23)
Lessons from Down Under
AS we debate whether Selangor will face a water shortage, the authorities should take a look at the experiences of SouthEast Queensland (SEQ). In a 2006 report, Queensland’s Premier and Minister of Natural Resources, Mines and Water forecast water shortages, and strongly recommended new supply infrastructure costing A$9 billion to bring in water from outside the region. The report warned that without more water the economy would suffer substantial losses.
South-East Queenslanders did not have to wait to experience water shortages. By then, the region was already hit by the Millennium Drought. The Queensland Water Commission was hurriedly established and given the mandate to manage water on a sustainable and integrated basis to ensure secure supplies for all users. The commission embraced the principles of: 1. Maximising efficient and cost-effective service delivery; 2. Considering environ-
mental, social and economic factors and applying "least cost planning" to compare all supply-side and demand-side options; and 3. Applying water restrictions to achieve long-term water demand management (WDM) objectives as well as to address threats to sustainable and secure water supply. A suite of WDM measures were introduced. They included water tariff increases that raised the price of water by about 250 per cent, a rebate programme to retrofit homes with water-saving devices, a
mandatory excessive users compliance programme for homes using more than 1,200 litres a day, a mandatory water efficiency plan for major nondomestic customers, and mandatory water restrictions for all users when dam levels fell. Me anw h i l e, t he Wate r Efficienc y and L abelling S che me w a s i nt ro du c e d nationally, making it mandatory for all water fixtures, washing machines and dishwashers to show their water usage on a label. SEQ’s residents transformed from water wasters into cham-
pion water savers. Lessons for Malaysia: 1. A water shortage offers an ideal opportunity for the authorities to introduce nononsense water demand management measures, and for domestic and non-domestic users to cut wasteful usage; and 2. When water usage is excessive, putting off costly water supply infrastructure is the best way to ensure longterm sustainability of our water supply. JC Tansen
Stop bickering and act now IT was reported Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya will face an expected water deficit in 2014. The National Water Source Report 2000-2050, conducted by the Economic Planning Unit,
states the demand for treated water would grow between two per cent and 3.5 per cent annually. The expected deficit would start this year when demand for treated water for the three
areas, totalling 4,391 million litres daily, would exceed supply by 65 million litres. So much has been said about the issue to a point where the Selangor government denied the matter, saying the supplies
are enough until 2019. Instead of pointless bickering, those in power should do something about these matters: a) Non-Revenue water; b) Water wastage and theft by illegal car wash;
c) Educate the public to save water and go Green; and d) Plant more trees in water catchment areas such as the Save the River campaign. Stephen Ng
KL: Bad English (April 28)
Promote English without sacrificing BM MALAYSIA's new generation is eloquent in Bahasa Malaysia (BM), which means they will have no problem reading, writing and speaking the language. This is because children learned the national language from their first day of school. It’s a compulsory subject to pass exams. Nowadays, almost all students are doing well when it comes to BM. Thus, t his is t he time for the Education Ministry to start doing something concrete for the development of the English language. We need to make English a compulsory subject, too, if we really want the students to master the language. Like it or not, English is still the preferred language used internationally. I was lucky to have learnt English at a time when the language was the medium for teaching. That was way back in 1958. It helped me a great deal during my worklife and also during my retirement. Sadly, our current school-going students are placing English in the backseat. The time has come for the minister to reopen all the old English schools in the country but without sacrificing BM as a compulsory subject. By doing so, there is no need to worry or fear because students will then be able to master, read, speak and write in two languages — BM and English. In conclusion, English is still and will continue to be an important language of the world. Instead of neglecting it, we should capitalise the language to help foster harmony and unity. Lau Bing

World's most powerful gay man Activists find hope in new Apple CEO Tim Cook
NON-inclusive workplaces and a lack of role models are two of the biggest challenges for gay people looking to get ahead in the corporate world. Not for too much longer, hope diversity activists, following the appointment of Tim Cook as CEO of Apple. Cook's rise to the top of the most valuable company in the world could well mean he has become the world's most powerful gay man, reports news.com.au. Cook, who had been notoriously silent on his sexuality before being outed as gay earlier this year by tech media, was ranked number one in Out
magazine’s Power 50 index in May, taking over the top spot from US talk show host Ellen Degeneres. The 50-year-old engineer was noted as a "leader-inwaiting" after taking the CEO reins on numerous occasions while Jobs was on sick leave. He joined Apple in 1998 and served as Chief Operating Officer responsible for the company's worldwide sales and operations. He has been described in the past as the genius behind Jobs and a key to the success of Apple's operations. He will now be hailed as a role model for gay people in the
corporate world. "I think that it's a fantastic development," said Nareen Young, CEO of Diversity Council of Australia. "What it reinforces is that gay and lesbian people are everywhere and the fact they have are reaching the senior echelons of business is an achievement." She added: "While there are a lot of role models out there, having a gay person at the helm of one of the world’s biggest companies might encourage people to come out who haven’t felt comfortable doing so in the past.” Rodney Croome, spokes-
man of Australian Marriage Equality, said: “There are still many gay and lesbian people at high levels of the corporate world who are afraid to come out. Cook's appointment will help open the corporate closet." When Cook arrived at Apple he was instructed with the task of cleaning up the manufacturing, distribution and global supply system. B efore Apple, he was vice-president of Corporate Materials for Compaq, and also spend 12 years with IBM which was named as Australia’s most gay-friendly employer at an awards ceremony in May.

The measure is an administrative move to ease coordination between government departments and open the way to Federal-level help. "In this emergency, I am activating all levels of State government to prepare for any situation that may be caused by Hurricane Irene," Cuomo said.
The hurricane was expected to barrel up the US east coast, reaching New York City over the weekend before continuing north. Lovestruck dictator Loot recovered from Gaddafi compound includes Condoleeza Rice album
LIBYAN rebels are still hunting for the elusive Muammar Gaddafi, and international authorities have expressed concern about securing Libya's suspected stockpiles of dangerous weapons. In the meantime, rebels have made a curious find at Gadhafi's Tripoli compound which they seized earlier this week: a photo album devoted to images of former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice (pic). Apparently, Gaddafi was quite admiring of Rice, who met with him in September 2008 in Tripoli, where they shared a post-Ramadan dinner, reports The Envoy.
"It was only three short years ago that Rice shared a late-night dinner with Gaddafi to break the Ramadan fast," the Washington Post's Jason Ukman wrote yesterday. "In a 2007 interview with al-Jazeera television, Gaddafi spoke of Rice in glowing terms," MSNBC's David Arnott wrote yesterday. "I support my darling black African woman," Gaddafi told al-Jazeera. "I admire and am very proud of
the way she leans back and gives orders to the Arab leaders... Leezza, Leezza, Leezza... I love her very much. I admire her and I'm proud of her because she's a black woman of African origin." Gaddafi has also spoken fondly of President B arack Obama, calling him "our dear son," as in this April letter he wrote to Obama in which he complained about Nato air strikes on his North African country.

FOR those who love watching action films, you’re in luck. Don’t thank anyone just yet but Colombiana’s director Olivier Megaton. Megaton, who is best known for his Transporter series, is back again for another round of action, involving pretty star, Zoe Saldana (Avatar, Pirates of the Caribbean). “I’ve always wanted to do a Jason Bourne type of action film with a female hero. I want to make a more serious movie, and less cartoony like Transporter 3, thus Colombiana,” Megaton said. “It’s a kind of homage to Nikita and Leon: The Professional. For Colombiana, I want to have the ground to explore the main character’s psychology and push it to its limits,” the French director said.
“Saldana instantly became my first choice for the lead role because not only she is beautiful, she’s also intelligent. The first time she read the script, she’s already full of bursting ideas.” The year 1992 is the backdrop of the film. Nine-yearold Cataleya witnesses her parents’ murder in Colombia. Barely surviving from the massacre herself, she takes refuge in the United States with her gangster uncle, Emilio. Fifteen years later, she works for her uncle as a trained hit woman. For Cateleya, she is determined to see her vengeance through the bitter end, even if it means losing something she loves the most. The movie was realised when producer Luc Besson approached Megaton in late 2009 with a script he had co-
written with Robert Mark Kamen (The Fifth Element). As for the movie’s villain, both Besson and his partner-in-crime, Kamen decided to come up with not one but several villains — three at most. “I wanted to do an imitation to the bad guy image that you will normally find in 1970’s action films. While Salanda admitted recognising some of the key personalities in her character Cataleya, she confessed that grasping some of her other facets are more difficult, like her more femme fatale part. “The violence in Cataleya
and her constant pain are inconceivable to me,” Saldana said. “I double the effort to comprehend and feel them in order to construct and play Cataleya. It’s complicated — she’s all tough on the outside but inside she’s also fragile, alone and exhausted from all the vengeance.”

New US Camry and Camry Hyb By SHAMSUL YUNOS lifestyle@mmail.com.my
THESE are the first pictures of the Camry in nature. It is a conventional looking car that will appeal to its traditional buyers but how would it fare with younger buyers? Will the Camry retain its image as a car for older and more mature buyers? While the design is conventional and conservative, there
Naza Kia records over 150 bookings at Penang roadshow NAZA Kia Malaysia Sdn Bhd, the official distributor of Kia Motors vehicles in Malaysia, recorded over 150 bookings at its recent Test Drive Kia on Tour 2011 roadshow in Penang. The majority of the bookings received during the five-day roadshow was for the popular Forte followed by the all-new Sportage launched in June. Over 13,000 visitors thronged the Test Drive Kia on Tour 2011 roadshow, held at Queensbay Mall from Aug 17 to 21. Customers who attended the roadshow were given a chance to test drive the Sportage, Forte and Sorento SUV. A total of 855 test drives were conducted during the roadshow. The roadshow in Penang was the second leg of Naza Kia Malaysia’s Test Drive Kia on Tour 2011 which began in May at the One Utama Shopping Centre in Kuala Lumpur. Following Penang, Naza Kia Malaysia will take the test drive campaign to Johor Baru before ending with another roadshow in the Klang Valley in October. Customers who test drive any of the vehicles at any of the road-
shows
will be in the running to win a Forte 1.6EX. The lucky winner of the Forte 1.6EX will be announced following the completion of the Test Drive Kia on Tour 2011 in October. The Test Drive Kia on Tour 2011 leg at Queensbay Mall also included mystery gifts for customers who participated in the test drive or signed up to be a Kia Malaysia fan on Facebook at the venue.
is no doubt that it is a pleasing shape that has well balanced proportions. The face is now slightly younger, thanks to the deletion of the chrome grille. The lower lip design is reminiscent of a Formula 1 nose and spoiler package and this contributes to the youthful look. The rear continues to be bulky and tall — this is concession to
luggage-carrying ability but at least Toyota is now a bit more adventurous with their surface treatment, sculpting the bumper to give the lower half more character, a bit more. The rear lamp cluster is a major design feature of the new Camry. It is a fairly interesting shape and does give the rear a bit more tension and character than usual.
The cabin continues with simple lines and surfaces with a large centre screen dominating the dashboard. This screen probably displays a simplified i-drive type of central command system for the car, or maybe just as a way of accessing the entertainment folder system. We will leave out the US specifications but suffice to say have a far wider range of options and even a 200+ horsepower hybrid version. Expect the Malaysian Camry to be based on this vehicle and be prepared for an announcement in the near future.
Captiva-ting makeover THE Chevrolet Captiva, a popular Sports Utility Vehicle, has undergone a facelift, and the changes made to the vehicle were numerous. Let’s start with the new corporate look which features a large prominent grille separated by a bold bar that is also home to the golden bowtie. This new face is distinctive and should help give the Captiva the strong character that every SUV needs to succeed. Changes in the cabin are also extensive with a major rework of the dashboard, which is most easily seen in the redesign of the centre console. The air-conditioner vents are now separated by a control panel that works the air conditioning and houses an analog clock. The main instrument cluster has also been redesigned to help bring it up to date with current trends for a simplified and clean look. The Captiva also benefits greatly from the lighter coloured trim as it makes the cabin feel more spacious and airy while lifting the ambience from drab to elegant. While the tweaks in the looks and cabin space are significant, the biggest change sits in the bonnet; a new 2.4litre petrol engine replacing an older 2.4-litre unit. The new engine displaces 2,384cc as opposed to 2,405cc of the motor it replaces. The new engine is also
E85-capable, which means that when biofuel is available at the pumps, owners can simply choose which petrol they want. The ECOTEC gasoline engine features double overhead camshafts (DOHC) with Double Continuously Variable CamPhasing (Double CVC) and it now generates more power compared to the previous engine — 100kW to 123kW and from 220Nm to 225Nm. Engine power is transferred to the driving wheels via a sixspeed automatic transmission featuring Driver Shift Control (DSC) – a function which allows the driver to have manual control over gear changes. It also comes with an ‘ECO’ mode which is programmed to help reduce fuel consumption in all driving conditions. The ‘ECO’
mode can be switched off via a selector button next to the gear lever. The Captiva gets independent Macpherson struts at the front and independent multilink at the rear, and it works together with the electronically controlled all-wheel drive system to ensure optimum traction and balance at all times. Safety is also a priority in the new Captiva — it features active and passive safety systems, including dual front airbags as standard supplemented by curtain airbags, disc brakes on all four wheels (ventilated at the front) with anti-lock braking system, electronic
brake-force distribution, traction control, Electronic Stability Program with anti-rollover protection and self-levelling suspension system. The new Captiva also features Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control which maintain a constant speed when descending steep slopes to maximise traction and control. The new Captiva is available in six body colours — Auburn Brown, Alpine White, Black Sapphire, Royal Gray, Tornado Red and Sterling Silver. The new Chevrolet Captiva is prices at RM153,888 and is available at all Chevrolet showrooms nationwide.

Have a coffee break as you go PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad launched the 'PETRONAS Coffee Break Campaign 2011' last week, which was in line with the Ministry of Transport’s effort to curb road accidents, especially during the festive season. The campaign allows drivers to rest and refresh themselves at 32 participating PETRONAS stations located along the highways and major trunk roads across Malaysia. All drivers and holidaymakers will be treated to beverages, snacks and road safety tips at these stations with the first phase kick-starting today until Sunday, while the second phase resumes between Sept 2 and 4. At the launch, Amir Hamzah Azizan, managing director and chief executive officer of PDB, said: “As an ardent advocate of road safety, PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad (PDB) first introduced the PETRONAS Coffee Break campaign 12 years ago to offer motorists throughout Malaysia a place to stop, rest and refresh during their long balik kampung drive. “The campaign has since been our flagship road safety programme to help prevent untoward incidents during festive

Apart from refreshments, the campaign will also offer additional activities, including free 5-point vehicle inspections by its partner, Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) at two of its participating stations, namely PSS Bentong and PSS Rawang. In addition, PETROSAINS will also be deploying its PETRONAS StreetSmart team to share road safety tips through a series of fun-filled, interactive games that will involve motorists and their families as well. Earlier this year, PDB also rolled out the Coffee Break Campaign during the Chinese New Year between Jan 29 and Feb 1, and subsequently from Feb 4 to 6. Over the years, the campaign has successfully reached out to over eight million motorists. Saga makeover NATIONAL carmaker Proton has come up with an interesting way of rewarding their loyal customers, by giving their ride a complete makeover so they can continue to enjoy the car they have known to love. Fadly Hisham Roplay’s 1992 Proton Saga will be the first car to go through this transformation process and the work will be done by none other than Proton’s own illustrious R3 unit of the Motorsports Division. “Fadly’s story about how his Proton Saga has impacted his life was quite an inspiration to us all,” said Group managing director, Datuk Seri Syed Zainal Abidin Mohamed Tahir. The ‘My Proton Makeover’ contest is part of the company’s ‘Committed to be Better’ programme in July. The contest is part of Proton’s programme to acknowledge and reward faithful customers who have fervently supported the national carmaker over the last 26 years. My Proton Makeover requires entrants to submit their story involving themselves and their Proton car. Proton will then identify the best stories or most heart-
warming and reward five other winners with a complete car makeover. Entries for the contest will close on Dec 28. “When we kicked off this initiative, Fadly’s name came up as a model example. The story of him and his Proton Saga was lighthearted and entertaining. But more importantly, it was really heartwarming to hear about much he loves his car and the memories that his family shares with the car. “For this, we truly felt that he and his car deserved a big ‘thank you’,” Syed Zainal said. Purchasing his Proton Saga in 1999 from an original owner in Kuala Lumpur, Fadly, a technician with an international electronics manufacturer, drove it back immediately to his hometown, where upon arriving at the Sultan Azlan Shah bridge in Perak, shouted out “Welcome to Kuala Kangsar!” to the car, as described by his mother who was travelling with him. “He has such an attachment to the car that only he can describe best,” said his mother, Hamiah Abdullah. “He once brought us down to shop in KL, and had his car towed by the traffic police as it was

parked illegally. After frantically rushing to the impound and paying the fine, he ran over and hugged the car! We couldn’t help but watch and laugh!” she said. When asked, Fadly expressed great sentiments of the car. “This car and I have shared many stories together. We have been the brunt of jokes by my family and friends. My father-in-law has even offered to pay the down payment for a new car, but I politely declined,” said Fadly. “It is a bit of a relationship, where my car keeps me going and I also keep her going,” he laughed after revealing that thousands of ringgits have been well spent over the years to keep the car as road-worthy as pos-
sible and for the regular service maintenance. Fadly’s 19-year-old Proton Saga will now be in the R3 workshop for four weeks, for a full re-work, from top to bottom, front to back and inside out. Speaking on behalf of the R3 unit, head of engineering, Tengku Djan Ley Mahaleel, said the department is excited about the project. “It’s not often that we are given a free rein to do up a car like this. Considering the background of the situation, we’re really looking forward to giving the car an outstanding makeover as a gift for Fadly.” The fully reworked Proton Saga will be unveiled in September.

Classic Jazz is still tops The 'refreshed' Honda offers all the characteristics that make it popular and a bit more, especially in this lovely candy burnt orange paintwork TestDrive: Honda Jazz
By SHAMSUL YUNOS lifestyle@mmail.com.my THE previous generation of Honda Jazz grabbed the attention of Malaysian motorists using its good looks and the badge, offering style, practicality, fuel economy and even some driving excitement. It sold in droves. The current model is also a strong performer in the market as it remains the only premium family hatchback near the RM100,000 mark. It continues to sell well because Honda stuck to a tried-and-tested formula. The orange car pictured here is a mild facelift of the current Jazz and changes to the car are purely cosmetic.
HONDA JAZZ ▪ Engine Type: 4 Cylinder 16 Valve SOHC i-VTEC ▪ Fuel Supply System: PGM-FI (Programmed Fuel Injection) ▪ Displacement (cc): 1,497 ▪ Maximum Horsepower [PS (kW)@rpm]: 120 (88)/6,600 ▪ Maximum Torque [Nm (kg-m)@rpm]: 146 (14.8)/4,800 ▪ Transmission Type: 5-speed Automatic Transmission with Shift Hold Control ▪ Front suspension: MacPherson Strut with Stabiliser Bar ▪ Rear suspension: Torsion Beam Axle ▪ Tyre Size: 185 / 55 R16 ▪ Price: RM106,808.50 (OTR without insurance)
To refresh the beat of the Jazz, Honda gave it a new grille, bumper front and rear; changed the interior fabric a bit and gave it a small button on the right side of the driver’s dashboard. That button controls the vehicle stability programme or VSC. With the driving dynamics unchanged, the Jazz continues to provide the driver with an accurate and responsive chassis that has been tuned to be safe and predictable but not boring. This means that if you push the Jazz hard on your favourite Sunday morning tarmac, the nose will stay tucked in for a while longer than in most family hatchbacks and the steering will dutifully keep the car where the driver wants it. But, if the driver tries too hard, understeer will creep in and spoil the day. However, given
the relatively soft springing on a tall car like the Jazz, body roll would have stopped most drivers from approaching the handling limit. Thanks to the VSC function in the Jazz, drivers can now push it a little harder, safe in the knowledge that there is an electronic safety net to help them get out of trouble. In a sense, the VSC made the Jazz a bit more fun to drive. We think that the styling update is as much a reason as the VSC for buying the Jazz. The new front- and rear-bumper has been designed with just the right amount of aggression to lift the Jazz from being a plain-Jane family hatchback into a reassuringly masculine and sporty car. Of course it is still a tall, MPV-like car but the square-jawed front bumper has given it more visual stability and this helps to plant it to the road in the mind’s eye. The element that achieved this trick is the vertical slats on the sides of the front bumper which allow the sides to reach down vertically instead of slanting inwards. This is the aggressive look that we see in most racing cars and a style that is much in use among European carmakers. The look is completed by the wire-mesh look
that fills in all the black bits and air passages. The rear bumper mirrors the aggression of the front and lowers the rear to, again, make the car look planted to the ground. With the side skirts completing the sporty look, the refreshed Jazz is now a noticeably more attractive car and should continue to be popular. We particularly liked the funky orange paintwork that reflects light in a way that accentuates the curves and creases of the bodywork. Since there are not many orange cars on the road, it would also make your Jazz easier to find in a huge shopping centre car park.

Honda Civic Hybrid consumer tribunal update The case of novelist Latifah Emir claiming against Kah Motors over a battery defect in her Honda Civic Hybrid entered a new phase on Tuesday when the president of the tribunal deemed their rebuttal insufficient to win them the case. According to Latifah, the judge told Kah Motors and Honda the Consumer Act 1999 deems a warranty for a product as an assurance to customers and not a contract as it is usually onesided and rejected the argument the car’s defect surfaced after the warranty period. Latifah said defects began appearing in month 22 of ownership as the high voltage hybrid drive batteries failed to recharge properly but Honda insisted there was nothing wrong with the car. The battery failed completely about two months after the two-year warranty period lapsed. The tribunal president then queried Honda about their claims over 10 to 12 years' battery lifespan and was told the life of the battery would depend on the way it is driven. The president then asked Honda to furnish any documentary evidence that accompanied the sales brochure to support this claim but Honda failed to do so. Honda told the court they had offered to replace the battery of the Civic Hybrid but Latifah
rejected the offer. The claimant then told the tribunal Honda had refused to entertain her request for battery replacement until the matter is brought to the tribunal and she felt the offer was not good enough and the tribunal president agreed claimant had a right to refuse offers that are deemed not good enough. In the end, the president gave Kah Motors and Honda Malaysia until Sept 9 to provide a written submission to prove what they did is within the laws of Malaysia, and to challenge the Consumer Act 1999 Law if they deem it wrong. Otherwise, the judge will rule permission for Latifah to claim a sum of RM21,521.19 from Kah Motors. The hearing for the verdict will be held on Sept 13.
Continental to ramp up India operations After acquiring Indian tyre brand, Modi Tyres Company Limited, German rubber and automotive component giant Continental plans to expand its position in the sub-continent. After the acquisition, Modi is now known as Continental India Ltd and they are ramping their operations in both the replacement market and the OEM space in India. Continental India will be increasing the production of the Modipuram plant beyond half a million bias truck and bus tyres (TBX) already this year.
From there, TBX production is planned to continuously grow to more than one million units in 2013. In addition, Continental India announced further investments of more than 50 million Euros to start production of radial tyres for passenger cars and commercial vehicles in the second half of 2013. Nikolai Setzer, executive board member, Continental AG and head of the Tyre Division said, in India, there is a rising demand for vehicles with high quality tyres as well as
premium technology. “We are convinced that radialisation will be the driving force in the Indian truck tyre market, and therefore our further investments of more than 50 million Euros in radial truck tyre production will prepare a solid base in order to meet that demand.” To accommodate the expansions, Continental India plans to increase its headcount by more than a third from the current 1,600 employees up to 2,200, to 2,400 within the next few years.

PETRONAS REIMAGINING ENERGY™ THROUGH MOTORSPORTS Mohammad Medan Abdullah Senior General Manager, Group Corporate Affairs Division, PETRONAS
At the end of August, we are going to celebrate a unique double celebration of Aidilfitri and Merdeka Day. The Merdeka celebration is a day of joy just like Aidilfitri. As we contemplate on the event of Merdeka some 54 years ago, we should think beyond the commemoration of our nation’s independence. In a wider context, it is about the liberation of our minds, getting over the mental hurdle, and having the unshakable belief that we can achieve whatever we set out to do. If we go about our business with this mental fortitude and purpose, then the sky is the limit. In many ways, PETRONAS’ involvement in motorsports epitomises the same same spirit of Merdeka. When we first started out, everything was unfamiliar but we held on to our belief that this is something that will benefit PETRONAS as a business entity and Malaysia as a nation. I’ve explained at some length in my previous column how our involvement in motorsports has paid handsome dividends in raising our profile in the global market, particularly Formula 1™. Today, the sport attracts in excess of 600 million global TV viewers per race, so it is a massive brand exposure for PETRONAS. Our product development has also directly benefited from our collaboration with some of the leading manufacturers. For instance, we get to develop our fuel and
lubricants using Formula 1™ technology, and these cars provide the most demanding test environment. It’s like having a mobile test lab going around some of the fastest and toughest race circuits all over the world, which is pretty cool, if you think about it. Our involvement in Formula 1™ started in Monaco 1995, and when the race came to town in 1999 – making Malaysia only the second host nation in the Far East — we became a proud sponsor of the PETRONAS Malaysia Grand Prix. In terms of exposure per advertising dollar, the returns on investment have been tremendous. Typically, we would have to spend a whole lot more in other advertising medium to get the same level of global exposure. In that sense, our involvement in Formula 1™ has put Malaysia firmly on the world map. Of course, having our very own ‘home’ race further raised the profile of our country. But perhaps the greatest benefit of our involvement in the pinnacle of motorsports to the nation lies in the powerful mindset shift that it can bring about. As far as possible, we have tried to make Formula 1™ more accessible to everyone in the country through our programmes every year. We hope this will fire the imagination of young Malaysians, and cultivate their interest in science and technology. The benefit to our nation may not immediately apparent, but it can have a massive long-term impact in
terms of inspiring the young minds and unleashing their potential. Our involvement in global motorsports over the years has also allowed Malaysians to work with some of the brightest minds in the industry, and this has been quite an eye-opener. We have certainly learnt a lot from working alongside our global partners. No doubt, the skills and technological know-how that we have gained have been fantastic. More importantly, we hope it will inspire a robust leap of mindset and thinking among Malaysians as a nation which does not accept mediocrity, able to compete with the best, and punch above our weight. That is the kind of shift in the nation’s psyche and consciousness that we would like to encourage. We are also investing in the development of local talents, and we are proud to work with promising young athletes such as Jazeman Jaafar and Hafizh Syahrin Abdullah. We hope the success of these emerging talents will spur greater interest among the youth in motor racing. Our achievements so far reflect our commitment towards taking PETRONAS to greater heights, and we are both delighted and humbled to have been able to contribute in our own small way to make the nation proud. Salam Aidilfitri and Selamat Hari Merdeka.

I have a lot of respect for him and he is very special to me, he was the hero of my childhood — Sebastian Vettel on Michael Schumacher SPA: MOTORSPORT/ FORMULA 1

Vettel unfazed about Red Bull's poor Spa-rring record
Hot Spa challenge Crucial race for Ferrari, McLaren in their bid to stop Red Bull
FromThe Driver'sSeat with Alex Yoong
SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS is the circuit all the drivers love to come to. Along with Suzuka in Japan, this circuit challenges and thrills the drivers like no other, due to the fast sweeping nature of it. The most famous corner at Spa is Eau Rouge, and there is no other corner like it anywhere in the world. It dips down, before elevating up at such a degree, that normal heavier road cars have to change down to first to motor up to the top. While all the elevation change happens, the corner goes left, then right before finally going left again at the top of the crest and with full throttle. Fantastic. We are just past the midpoint of the season, and if Ferrari and McLaren are going to make any inroads to snatching either one of the championships, they need to do it this weekend at the Belgian GP. Red Bull continue to lead, and others will be hoping that they will make mistakes along the way. And the best way to do so is to apply pressure on
the front-runners. Unfortunately, Red Bull were very fast here last year, where Mark Webber secured pole position comfortably. The middle section of the track — where you have the insanely fast Pouhon followed by the zippy right-left chicanes, or 'biff baffs' — plays to the Red Bull's strengths. So we know that Red Bull will easily be the quickest through qualifying, although there are signs that they won't have it all their own way. Ferrari's pace in Silverstone showed that they may have got a true handle on the medium to high speed stuff. If that's the case, then Ferrari should be right there here at Spa. Most importantly, Spa is a circuit you can overtake on. Add the DRS, and the new Pirelli's into the mix, and we should have a fascinating race. With all the long, highspeed corners, it is also a track with high tyre degradation — that is assuming the roads stay dry. Because it’s never fully dry at Spa. It is only an hour away

CHAMPION and leader Sebastian Vettel (pic) says Spa-Francorchamps is not Red Bull's "favourite circuit", but that he still thinks their RB7 will be strong. Vettel has yet to finish higher than third in Belgium in his career, but teammate Mark Webber qualified on pole last season and finished the race second to McLaren's Lewis Hamilton. Vettel admitted that at Spa, the long straights did not play to Red Bull's strengths, but he was confident it would still be competitive. "It's not our favourite circuit because there are a lot of straights here, more than on most of the other tracks," said the German. "There are some corners but they're all in sector two so sector one and sector three are quite difficult — we've seen that in the past. But I think generally we've had a very good car around here, the last two years especially, so I'm looking forward.
"It's a very nice track all in all, and I'm looking forward to the weekend. Surely the last couple of races we know that we might not have been on top of our game but I think we've understood and learnt quite a lot, so we'll see where we are this weekend." Vettel has won none of the last three races as McLaren and Ferrari show improved pace, and he said the main reason was the Red Bull's

from the Nurburgring, which means we will see frequent changing weather. And due to the trees overlooking the track, it is normal for some parts to stay wet long after the rest of the track has become dry. inability to get heat in to their tyres quickly, an area the team have been addressing. "There are no secrets to reveal. Obviously the last three races were pretty different in terms of conditions, especially the Nurburgring I think was a bit of a surprise with very cold temperatures. Whereas in the past, I think we have always been very competitive when it was cold it seemed that we were struggling more than others this season. "So it's basic homework. It's nothing wrong with the car itself, it's just trying to get everything up to temperature quick enough where we seem to struggle a little bit. "I think already for Hungary we made a step forward and now we go from there. Obviously we had no time to test in between so we can only analyse and think about those things that make more sense, but we need to confirm them on the track."

BRISBANE: RUGBY UNION/ TRI-NATIONS
All Blacks coach's blunder should inspire Wallabies
NEW ZEALAND coach Graham Henry fired up Australia ahead of the TriNations decider by questioning whether they had ever won the competition. Speaking ahead of tomorrow's decisive encounter between the teams in Brisbane, the 65-year-old
New Zealand tactician said "Have they ever lifted it (the trophy)?" When reminded of Australia's back-to-back titles in 2000 and 2001, Henry made a good fist of appearing genuinely surprised. "I do apologise. Oh, they
have done it!" he said. Defending champions New Zealand have a chance to win their 11th Tri-Nations title at Lang Park tomorrow in what will be both teams' last Test run-out before the World Cup, taking place in New Zealand from Sept 9-Oct 23.
The All Blacks, for the World Cup, are in Pool A, alongside France, Tonga, Japan and Canada, while Australia are in Pool C with Ireland, Italy, Russia and the United States. The Kiwis hammered Australia 30-14 in their opening encounter of this year's
Tri-Nations tournament, and have named a near-full strength side to take on the world's second-ranked side, who find themselves in contention for the title for the first time in years. In response, Wallabies prop Ben Alexander was a model of diplomacy and would
not be goaded into asking whether Henry's memory extended to 1987 — the last and only time the All Blacks won the World Cup. "As far as his knowledge goes — he's been around for a long time — and it's an honest mistake. He's a very respectful guy," he said.

gave them, stabbing home Michael Nelson’s header. And they appeared to have
survived Newcastle’s second-half fightback only for Ryan Taylor to curl a freekick home with 10 minutes remaining to take the contest into extra-time. Scunthorpe could easily have been further ahead, Tim Krul making an excellent save to deny Jimmy Ryan after good work from Andy Barcham. Newcastle, much improved in the second-half, narrowly missed out when Peter Lovenkrands was denied by
an alert Josh Lillis. Leon Best did put the ball in the net, only to be judged offside. They had to wait until the 80th minute to get back on level terms, when Ryan Taylor curled a sumptuous trademark free-kick home to force extra-time. The added period passed by with little incident until Ameobi jinked his way towards the edge of the box and lashed a shot into the back of the net to break plucky Scunthorpe.
LONDON: football/ europa league
English sides through
No such luck for neighbours Scotland as trio crash out ALL three Scottish sides crashed out of the Europa League at the playoff stage on Thursday night while all the English sides involved secured a group-stage spot. Rangers, Celtic and Hearts all crashed out, meaning there will be no Scottish involvement in the group stages of either the Champions League or Europa League. Rangers, trailing Slovenian champions Maribor 2-1 from the first-leg, spurned a host of chances at Ibrox before Dalibor Valas extended the visitors' aggregate lead. Carlos Bocanegra restored Rangers' hopes with an equaliser on 75 minutes, but the hosts couldn't find the goal to force extra-time. Celtic never recovered from falling a man and goal down within three minutes at FC Sion, eventually falling to a 3-1 defeat both on the night and on aggregate. A second-string Tottenham side played out a tame goalless draw with Hearts at White Hart Lane to ease through to the group stage after last week's 5-0 victory at Tynecastle. Striker Harry Kane missed a penalty for the home side, his spot-kick saved by Jamie MacDonald. Championship side Birmingham defeated Nacional 3-0 at St Andrews to seal an aggregate victory by the same scoreline.

Selangor’s Proud sensation
BRITON Benjamin Ross Proud has been living in Malaysia for the last 15 years. He refers to Malaysia as his home as he has only lived a year in his motherland, England. He is an avid swimmer, and a good one too. He dons Selangor’s red and yellow in tournaments across the country. Proud bettered the 50m freestyle national record of 23.45s at the Malaysia Open at the National Aquatic Centre last May. However, Proud's time will not go into the record b o ok s as he is not a Malaysian. The 16-yearold still holds a British passport despite having stayed in Malaysia for most of his life. "Malaysia is more like home to me than England is. My parents moved here for business reasons," said Proud. Things would be easier for Proud if he gained citizenship but Proud also has dreams of being in the England swimming team. "I would love to represent Malaysia but I also dream

Spurs sign ex-Gunner Adebayor
Fulham are safely through despite losing 1-0 at Dnipro, the Cottagers' 3-0 win in last week's home leg securing their passage 3-1 on aggregate. Evgeniy Shakhov scored the only goal of the night from close range in the 22nd minute, but despite making Cottagers keeper Mark Schwarzer work overtime, the
home side could not get back in the tie. Stoke cruised into the group stages as Kenwyne Jones helped them wrap up a comfortable 5-1 aggregate victory over FC Thun with a brace in the play-off second-leg at the Britannia Stadium. Going into the game 1-0 up from last Thursday's initial meeting in Switzerland, the
Potters soon extended their lead, scoring three times in the first-half through headers from Matthew Upson and Jones and a drilled effort by Glenn Whelan. Jones crashed home his second with just under 20 minutes to go before substitute Andreas Wittwer netted a consolation for Thun as Stoke sealed a 5-1 aggregate win.
TOTTENHAM have completed the signing of Emmanuel Adebayor from Manchester City on a season-long loan. The former Arsenal striker's move back to London has been confirmed after City's football administrator Brian Marwood had earlier revealed he had undergone a medical. A statement on Spurs' website this morning confirmed: "We are delighted to announce the signing of Emmanuel Adebayor on a season-long loan from Manchester City." Manager Harry Redknapp has been in the market for a striker all summer after Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe and Roman Pavlyuchenko all failed to score regularly last season. The Togo-born Adebayor moved to the Premier League
in January 2006 from Monaco and scored 81 goals in 186 appearances in all competitions during spells with Arsenal and City. Adebayor fell out with City boss Roberto Mancini last season and the Italian made it clear the £25m signing had no future at the club. The 27-year-old spent the second-half of last season on loan at Real Madrid, where he scored twice against Spurs in the Champions League quarterfinal first-leg clash between the two teams at Santiago Bernabeu. During that match, Spurs fans chanted abusive songs at the former Arsenal marksman, but the player himself said this summer the songs would not put him off signing for Redknapp's team.

Incredible Guardiola
Barca boss poised to win a record 12th title in just four years HOLA! Beat this. Barcelona manager Josep "Pep" Guardiola has this amazing chance of winning his 12th silverware in just four years when the Catalans play Porto in the Uefa Super Cup at Stade Loius 11 in Monaco tomorrow (2.45am). T h is match , e x p e c te d to be entertaining as both sides employ an attacking game, is a clash between the Champions League and Europa League winners. If Barca do beat Porto, then the 40-year-old Guardiola will beat club legend Johan Cruyff 's record of 11 titles. However, Cruyff took a longer period to achieve his fe at, nine GUARDIOLA

years to be precise, from 1988 to 1996. Guardiola, of course, was part of the Dutchman's team from 1990 to the end of Cruyff 's reign in 1996, playing as a defensive midfielder. Barca are favourites tomorrow with the kind of attacking players they have, like Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta, Xavi, Pedro and Cesc Fabregas, around. There is also the possibility of Chilean star Alexis Sanchez seeing action as well, after recovering f rom an injury suffered just before the Sp anish Sup er Cup clash against Real Madrid at Nou Camp last week. How e v e r, t h e ever modest Guardiola praises his players. "I didn't win them alone, and what Johan did for this club cannot be matched however many titles we win in the future," he said. "What we have to do i s m ai nt ai n this competitiveness." He also says Barca are not unbeatable, b ut h o p e s his side can add another trophy to their impressive collection by winning tomorrow. T h e Catalans h ave b e e n described as 'untouchables' for the
way they maintained dominance in Spain and Europe in recent years but Guardiola feels there will be a point when things go wrong. "We are not invincible and someone could beat us," he said. "If we receive praise then it is because we play well and we have won 11 titles (in my time as manager). "In sport, the most important thing is the next game and we have to focus on this." There is more good news for Barca fans. Messi has just won yet another individual accolade after securing the inaugural Uefa Best Player in Europe award this morning. T h e 2 4 - ye ar- o l d b e at Real Madrid ace Cristiano Ronaldo and his Barca teammate Xavi to the award which was held at the Grimaldi forum in Monaco. It caps off a memorable season which saw him score a sublime 53 goals in all competitions to help his side enjoy a flawless campaign in Primera Liga and the Champions League as they won the double. Messi also struck twice in last week's Spain Super Cup as Barcaa added more silverware to their trophy room. "I am honoured to win this award and I want to thank my teammates. We all want to win more and all the time and this is what pushes us to continue. The cohesion of the dressing room is what gives us the strength," he said. Messi's role, as usual, is to create problems for the Porto defence tomorrow. However, there is one man who can spoil the Barca party in Monaco and he is Porto attacker Hulk, who is determined to beat the Catalans. The Portuguese champions, themselves, have already won their domestic Super Cup this season and

are eager to add to their trophy cabinet as well. "My teammates and I couldn't be more motivated for this match against Barca, undoubtedly one of the best teams in the world, and we will do everything in our power to bring the trophy back to Portugal," Hulk told Uefa's website. "Every match is a test for us, a chance for our team to prove just how good we really are. Of course, this clash with Barca will be very important, not only because there's a trophy to win but also because we're facing the reigning European champions. However, the objective remains the same — to win." Hulk will be the main man upfront for Porto as ace Colombian international striker Radamel Falcao has joined Atletico Madrid. The encouraging news for Hulk and Porto is that Barca will not have the services of regular centrebacks Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique because of injuries. It will still be difficult for Porto though. But whoever plays in the heart of defence for Barca must not make Hulk angry. They know the consequences. Adios!

Forlan on verge of joining Inter
ATLETICO MADRID striker Diego Forlan should finalise his move to Inter Milan within the next couple of days. The 32-year-old Uruguay international has been locked in talks with Inter for the past week, and despite late interest from Turkish giants Galatasaray, a fee of €5m has been agreed between the two clubs, while personal terms have also been thrashed out. Forlan's agent, Daniel Bolotnikoff, and brother Pablo Forlan have represented the striker in negotiations with Inter general manager Marco Branca, and it is believed that he will receive a two-year contract, worth an estimated €3m a year. "There has been contact
with Inter and there is an opportunity for Diego to wear the Nerazzurri jersey. We have to review everything by Friday (today) at the latest," said Bolotnikoff. The transfer has gained momentum of late after Atletico admitted on their website that Forlan did not travel for their Europa League clash with Vitoria Guimaraes this morning, due to participating in dialogue with another club. Forlan is expected to form one of two attacking reinforcements in the absence of Samuel Eto'o, who completed his lucrative transfer to Anzhi on Wednesday, with reports in Italy suggesting any one of Ezequiel Lavezzi, Rodrigo Palacio and Carlos Tevez could follow suit.

Me a nw h i l e , Fe r n a n d o Gago could be on his way out of Real Madrid after all as Roma have shown an interest in signing the Argentina international, La Gazzetta dello Sport reports. Roma, at the same time, are looking to bolster their midfield before the summer transfer window closes on Wednesday and manager Luis Enrique sees Real Madrid's Gago as the perfect addition to his squad. Gago has a contract with Real until the summer of 2013, but the Spanish giants appear to be ready to cash in on the Argentina international. A move to Boca Juniors fell through earlier this summer as the club failed to meet Real's asking price, but Gago could now be headed to Serie A instead. Roma have already secured the services of players, such as Maarten Stekelenburg, Jose Angel, Gabriel Heinze, Erik Lamela, Bojan Krkic and Osvaldo, this summer but they seemingly are not done on the transfer market just yet.

Three-way fight for Arteta ARSENAL face Spanish competition for Everton midfielder Mikel Arteta (right). Malaga and Valencia, who have just picked up £27m from Chelsea for Juan Mata, are both willing to pay £10m for attacking midfielder Arteta. But despite losing Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona and Samir Nasri to Manchester City, Wenger still appears reluctant to spend the near £60m the club have racked in. It was revealed earlier this week how skipper Robin van Persie called for a meeting with Wenger on Monday and was shocked to hear his manager state he was not unhappy with his current squad. But that was before Nasri’s departure and 29-yearold Arteta is now understood to be on the Frenchman’s radar.

Bellamy targets Anfield return CRAIG BELLAMY told friends he would jump at the chance to return to Liverpool. Liverpool have made a cheeky bid to resign Bellamy from Manchester City — but only if they can have him for nothing. The Reds do not want to pay a transfer fee and want City to either loan him out or pay him off. City are mulling this over and feel Bellamy still has some value in the transfer market because he has two years left on his £95,000-a-week contract. However, they are under pressure from Roberto Mancini to offload the Welsh striker and he claimed last week that the former Newcastle man would never play for him again. Bellamy, 32, had a previous spell at Anfield but was sold by Rafa Benitez to West Ham after just one season in 2007.

Unhappy citizen ..but it's hard to understand what Tevez's problems are in Manchester TOO much rain; too few restaurants; exhausting training regimens; just some of the reasons why Carlos Tevez is, apparently, unhappy at Manchester City. Lacking the imagination to find ways of spending his £200,000 per week (plus) salary could be another cause for his discontent. People who ‘work’ for a living are having difficulty rustling up sympathy for his plight. The question is though; is Tevez simply a perennially unhappy, pouting, brooding individual, or is he merely a prisoner — nothing more than a pawn in a multi-million dollar game of finance, the machinations of which have reached staggering proportions, involving exiled Russian oligarchs (one of whom is now deceased) and of the ilk that would make John Le Carre salivate. The answer is probably, a bit of both. As a footballer, Tevez is ‘owned’. That is to say that his ‘economic rights’ belong to a company, and the paper trail reveals that through the years, ownership has changed hands on several occasions. The only constant has been that the various companies have been registered in tax havens and finance centres boasting privacy — a euphemism, if ever there was one, for secrecy. Individuals have made millions from the transfer dealings involving Tevez, treating him as a tradable commodity and,
FIXTUREs
GAMEONwith With Andrew Leci I suspect, with an attendant indifference to him as a human being. With the possible exception of Manchester United (whose colours Tevez used to wear, ironically enough) the 27-yearold Argentine would walk into any starting 11 of any team in the country. He is a human dynamo of a player, displaying boundless energy on the field, and a seemingly limitless passion for the game. Opposing defenders and goalkeepers in particular hate him, not only for the fact that he’s likely to notch up a goal against them, but also because he’ll never let them have a moment’s peace in 90 minutes. Tevez chases down everything, defending from the front, as every striker should, and is generally regarded as a pain in the backside for opponents — and that says nothing of his creative potential and his eye for goal. The problem is, he always looks miserable, and from reports about his tawdry life in Manchester, it seems that he probably is. After leading Manchester City to an FA Cup triumph in May, Tevez declared his intention to remain at Eastlands — despite rumours linking him
with a move to Italy. Less than a month later, on a chat show in Argentina, he declared he “would not even return there on vacation.” He doesn’t seem to like Manchester very much, and he should know how he feels — he’s been there for more than four years already. He also doesn’t do himself any favours when it comes to forging good relations with the media. One of the main reasons for his permanent unhappiness seems to be that he gets to see little of his two daughters, who live in Argentina with their mother. We can all sympathise with this, but it begs the question of why, when given a few days off in the middle of last season to go and visit his family, he opted for a holiday in the Canary Islands instead. Eyebrows were also raised when he stated his intention to go and play in either Spain or Italy (better weather, better food, presumably) when neither of those countries are any closer to Argentina than Manchester. For now, Tevez appears to be back in the Manchester City fold, and was used as a substitute in the win against Bolton last weekend.
Roberto Mancini’s men sit proudly atop the current Premier League table, with two wins from two games — both results achieved without a significant input from the grumpy Argentinean — he’s seen 22 minutes of game time so far this season. Mancini has been keen to point out that he does have a future at the club, despite the wealth of resources currently at the disposal of the manager, who will continue to play what some have referred to as ‘fantasy football’. The recent signing of Samir Nasri from Arsenal will add extra pressure on Tevez for a place in the starting line-up, and one doesn’t imagine for a moment that Tevez will be content to sit on the bench and reduce his involvement to a series of cameo performances. Certainly not, especially if he can’t find more than a couple of Manchester’s 300 or so restaurants that are worth eating at. Gunners behind Wenger, says Szczesny
ARSENAL goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny (pic) insists the players never questioned Arsene Wenger, after his superb penalty stop helped ease the pressure on his boss. Szczesny's spot-kick save in Wednesday's Champions League play-off second-leg at Udinese could yet prove the turning point of the Gunners' miserable start to the season. Winless in their opening two Premier League matches, having lost key midfielders Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri to rival clubs, and plagued by a raft of injuries, suspensions and sanctions from the game's governing bodies, it
had been a fortnight to forget for Wenger prior to the Udinese clash. The knives would have been out in force had Arsenal failed to reach the Champions League group stage but Wenger's players belied their brittle reputation by completing an impressive comeback at Stadio Friuli. "I think the only people who actually believed in the team were the team themselves," said Szczesny, who claimed any pressure on Wenger came only from outside the camp. "Inside the team, we don't do that at all. We know how good we are and how good our manager is. We believe in
what he is doing so I believe we answered a lot of questions," he said. It might have been a different story on Wednesday but for Szczesny's second-half penalty save from Antonio Di Natale, which preserved Arsenal's aggregate lead. And the goalkeeper revealed he had indulged in a bout of sledging while Di Natale prepared to take the penalty. "I gave him a little bit of stick and was probably not very nice to him but it worked so I am delighted," said Szczesny. "I told him he wasn't good enough, I was too good for him and he wasn't going to score — but in a nice way.
"I got in his head in the end because he missed the penalty. "I don't take too much credit — I went the right way and when you do that you have a 50 per cent chance of saving the penalty. I don't think it was a great save but still very happy with it," he said. Arsenal's 2-1 win was the ideal pick-me-up ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash Manchester United, which is already looking like a must-not-lose match. "The last couple of games, we had disappointing results but, as I said, there was never a doubt in our heads that we are a very good side,"
said Szczesny. "So we are going to keep going, put in a good performance at Old Trafford on Sunday and see how it goes from there. The team believe we are capable of playing very well and winning games."

Battling City MONACO: Football/ champions league
Big spenders believe they can go far at first try in elite European competition
MANCHESTER CITY football administrator Brian Marwood is excited after they were pitted against four-time champions Bayern Munich, Villarreal and Napoli in the Champions League group phase. City qualified for the competition for the first time after finishing third in the Premier League last season, and will be regarded as dark horses to go all the way after continuing to spend heavily on new players this summer. The draw was held in Monaco this morning. “It’s a fantastic group with four fantastic sides,” Marwood told Sky Sports. “It’s going to be extremely competitive. I genuinely believe there are four teams who can compete for the two places on an even keel.” “It’s a fantastic part of City’s history to be here for the first time in Europe’s premier club competition. We really believe we can go into this competition and do well with the spirit that we have.” Bayern manager Jupp Heynckes highlighted the

quality of the clubs his side will come across in the group stage, which has been described by some as the ‘Group of Death’. Heynckes noted he agrees
with such remarks and stressed his team will need to be fully focused in order to progress. “This is the hardest group. I know Villarreal and Napoli very well, they are great teams,” he said. “City have bought some very good players and they are targeting success in Europe and England. We will be called into action in every game and we have to be concentrated in every minute.” Germany international Philipp Lahm conceded Bayern have a complicated task ahead, but underlined his team have the quality to reach the knockout stages. “The group is amazing, every game will be a great game for the fans. I am very excited — this is the Champions League,” said Lahm. “If we are concentrated and show our quality, we can reach the last-16 stage.” Villarreal goalkeeper Diego Lopez said they are in the “hardest group in the history of the Champions League”. “It’s the hardest group in the history of the Champions

Bring on Barca, says Milan boss Allegri
AC MILAN manager Massimiliano Allegri (pic) insists he is thrilled by the prospect of meeting holders Barcelona in the Champions League group stages, although he admits it would not be easy to overcome who he dubbed the best team in the competition. Milan are drawn alongside Barca in Group H, and will travel to Nou Camp on Sept 13 to meet the Catalans in their very first fixture. Bate Borisov and Viktoria Plzen round off a group from which Milan will feel confident of qualifying, despite their meeting with the champions. “We drew the strongest team, but in our group we
have two other teams within our reach. I think the next round is fully within our grasp,” said Allegri. before expressing his desire that the test would bring the best out of the Italian champions. “With Barca it is a fascinating challenge, I believe we must prepare ourselves to be able to play better. I think the game itself gives great stimulation and motivation. We are definitely in the best conditions to deal with it”. The return match at San Siro is on Nov 23. Meanwhile, Barca sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta believes Milan represent tough rivals for them in
the group. The draw also sees Barca come face to face with their former striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who famously fell out with manager Josep ‘Pep’ Guardiola in his single season at Nou Camp. “It’s a very diverse group,” Zubizarreta told Sport. “The one we know are Milan and they are very, very powerful rivals. And they have a great player in Ibrahimovic.” Zubizarreta admitted he knows little about the other two teams in the group but claims Barca can ‘learn new things’ from the Eastern European sides. Meanwhile, Manchester
United Alex Ferguson has no immediate concerns about their draw. General consensus suggests United have been fortunate to be drawn in Group C alongside Benfica, who they defeated to win their first European Cup in 1968, Basel and Romanian minnows Otelul Galati. “It’s an interesting draw with no real travel difficulties. We’re looking forward to the games,” Ferguson told his club’s website. “Obviously we’ve played Benfica in the past. They’re always great games. Obviously there’s great history between the two clubs.”
