Australian banknote printers paid, or conspired to pay, foreign officials, including Malaysians

TWO subsidiaries of the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) have pleaded guilty to bribing foreign officials, including Malaysians. Banknote firms Note Printing Australia (NPA) and Securency are expected to receive multi-million dollar fines after lawyers for both entered guilty pleas at the Melbourne Magistrate’s Court yesterday to three charges each of bribing or conspiring to bribe foreign officials to obtain a business advantage, reports Australian newspaper The Age. The guilty pleas come after a two-and-a-half year investigation by the Australian Federal Police, Britain’s Serious Fraud Office and other international law enforcement agencies, including the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). In July, Australian police charged these companies and several former senior executives with bribery offences in Malaysia, Vietnam and Indonesia. RBA fully owns banknote printer NPA and half of Securency, which manufactures plastic banknotes. These companies printed the RM5 polymer note, as well as the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games RM50 commemorative notes. The Age and this writer had collaborated since 2009 to expose corruption concerns in the awarding of note-printing contracts, including allegations of RM130 million in commissions paid to middlemen, to bribe politicians and government officials. On July 1, former Bank Negara assistant governor Datuk Mohamad Daud Dol Moin was charged with receiving RM100,000 to secure a contract for Securency for the printing of polymer notes in 2004 and 2005. The man who allegedly tried to bribe him, arms dealer Abdul Kayum Syed Ahmad, has also been charged under the Anti-Corruption Act.

By TERENCE FERNANDEZ terence@mmail.com.my Former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi had issued a denial on July 5 that there were attempts to bribe him when he was premier and Finance Minister in 2003 to secure a RM95 million contract for Securency to print the RM5 polymer note. In Melbourne, eight former senior NPA and Securency executives face committal hearings in December after being charged with multiple foreign bribery offences in July. Prosecutors there claim Abdul Kayum was paid A$4 million (RM12 million) in commissions. In Britain, Securency’s former deputy chairman, Bill Lowther, was charged with conspir-

ing to bribe a Vietnamese central bank governor. In August, a Melbourne magistrate had imposed a gag order on reporting any guilty pleas by NPA or Securency, following a request by the firms’ lawyers who claim any guilty plea by the companies could prejudice potential jurors should their clients face trial. The gag order, however, only applies to the State of Victoria. Sentencing is on Nov 8. Contacted by The Malay Mail, MACC deputy chief commissioner Datuk Shukri Abdull indicated that there would be no fresh charges. “We have completed our investigations and have charged the former senior central bank officer and a businessmen,” he said in a text message, adding that their trials will begin in January.

Groups against swap deal

CM issues ultimatum to Umno Online

It will undermine international standards on protection of refugees CIVIL society groups criticised a possible revival of the AustraliaMalaysia refugee swap deal, saying it would undermine international standards that guaranteed the protection of refugees and asylum-seekers. Health Equity Initiatives (HEI) director Sharuna Verghis said the Australian government were obliged under the 1951 Convention and 1967 Protocol relating to the Status of Refugees to protect them. "The Australian government cannot outsource its problems to other countries, especially to countries that have not ratified the United Nations (UN) human rights convention," she told The Malay Mail. "This alarming trend of trying to outsource their obligation is of concern."

By Meena Lakshana meena@mmail.com.my

Sharuna was commenting on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's statement yesterday that the Australian administration was still keen and committed to implementing the agreement but would have to wait until its present administration gained enough support to bring it to Parliament. Najib reportedly said in Australian newspapers that international cooperation was needed to curtail human trafficking in the Asia-Pacific region. Sharuna said Malaysia should focus on developing a comprehensive legislative and administrative framework for protection of refugees and asylum-seekers. "Without recognition or a for-

mal right to work, the exploitation in the form of forced labour and human trafficking will continue. The government should seriously look at forced labour as an integral part to human trafficking," she said. Another matter the government should also focus on was providing adequate health care to the marginalised groups. Sharuna said according to survey findings announced by HEI in July, refugees and asylumseekers who experienced forced labour were prone to suffer from depression, anxiety and stress but had limited access to proper health care. Human rights group Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram) refugee coordinator Andika Wahab said: "If we develop a protection framework, at least they

(refugees and asylum-seekers) are protected from arrest, they can work, their children can go to school. They can earn (a living) here." He said this would limit factors that compelled refugees to sail to Australia from Malaysia. "Many refugees and asylum seekers are keen to take the boat to Australia desperately." Although the Australian High Court ruled the refugee swap agreement was invalid on the grounds that Malaysia was not a signotory of the UN refugee convention, Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard believed it could still be implemented if opposition lawmakers agreed to migration law amendments. Her government was short of one vote for majority support for the amendments to take place.

that they, too, should also be answerable for what happened in their States. "States under the Opposition’s rule are not exonerated from reprimands. They, too, have something to answer," he told reporters after launching The School Times mini-newspaper at SMK Batu Sepuluh in Lekir, near here. He said Opposition Leader

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was also part of the government once and as deputy prime minister at that time, he would have known the report would invariably contain reprimands to ensure improvement. "This report shows something, that is the responsibility of the Auditor-General to take into account all aspects and ask

PENANG Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has given Umno Online 48 hours to withdraw articles attacking his son or a police report will be lodged over the matter. Lim, in his blog yesterday, said both he and his wife were outraged by the continued accusation by bloggers against his 15-year-old son despite having issued recently a denial that none of the incidents took place. He said the accusation was his son had outraged the modesty of his female classmate, causing him to be transferred to another school and that Lim paid RM200,000 to the girl’s family to keep things under wraps. "I wanted to put the matter to rest after my son, who is not even 16, was proven innocent. He had even skipped school for two days since the attacks came about," he wrote. Lim claimed his son was the victim of ‘morally despicable and barbaric lies’ and had not wanted to involve the police in the matter initially. “We have decided with reluctance that we have no choice but to act. Not to act will allow these bullies to continue to stain my young son’s image,” said Lim, describing the politicians who attacked his son as cowards. "We will give Umno Online 48 hours to withdraw and apologise for their dirty politics against my son or else a police report will be lodged and other action taken," he said. Meanwhile when contacted, Umno Online media head Kamal Zailani declined to comment on the matter. Last week, several blogs accused Lim’s son of outrag-

ing the modesty of a female classmate which resulted in him being transferred to another school. Lim’s son was a student at SMK Heng Ee but was moved to St Xavier Institution in January. A photo of a young woman, said to be the victim, was also used by the blogs amidst the attacks. DAP national publicity secretary Tony Pual later reported the woman had never studied in Penang and had never been a classmate of Lim's son. He said the woman depicted on several blogs was 21-year-old British citizen Anya Corke, a former world chess champion. A news portal then quoted the chess grandmaster denying the accusation and that she was “shocked, dismayed and baffled” as to how her photo was used without her knowledge or consent. She said she had not visited Malaysia in the past seven years, nor has she been a classmate of Lim’s son and is currently enrolled at Wellesley College in the US. Anya said she never met Lim or his son and did not know who they were prior to finding out about the allegations. SMK Heng Ee principal Goon Boon Poh was also reported to have stated the alleged act never took place and all claims made were untrue. Umno Online in its reports last week, called on Lim to address the allegations, claiming the Penang CM to be inconsistent in his statements regarding the issue.

"Members of Konsensus Bebas are free to join any association or political party and we will still stand together to highlight issues for the sake of our citizens," he said. Tan said he also joined Kita without consulting his Konsesus Bebas partners. "If Zulkifli now adopts a more right-wing approach,

I would not be surprised," he said. Mohsin said Zulkifli joining Perkasa was nothing new. "I feel it would be good for Zulkifli as he would have another platform to raise matters concerning Islam, Malays and the Malay rulers," he said. "There are issues which Konsensus Bebas members can raise in Parliament for public interest."

Don't buy fake pistols while overseas, warn police THE next time you travel overseas, do not buy a fake pistol to show off to friends or as a toy for your children. In g iving t his advice, police revealed that so far this year, fake handguns have been confiscated from seven Malaysians arriving at the KL International Airport after trips to Thailand and other neighbouring countries. Sepang district police chief Supt Imran Abd Rahman said although the intention to buy fake pistols may seem harmless, offenders risk being fined up to RM5,000 and jailed up to a year, or both, under Section 36 of the Arms

wanted to use it as a toy or as part of their wall decoration," he said. "But these fake firearms can

be used to scare people and for committing crimes and is a dangerous and serious matter." Imran said there were two ways to bring in the fake pistols. "First, the offender tries to pass it off as a toy during luggage check at the airport. Second, the offender mails it from overseas to his own address in Malaysia via parcel package," he said. "When it comes to mailing it, we have come across cases where after receiving the parcel, the offender redirects it to another local destination, including Kuching and Kota Kinabalu, for profit."

Teen hides dead baby in pile of clothes

A 14-YEAR-OLD former student put the body of her newborn baby boy in a plastic bag and hid it in a pile of clothes in her bedroom. Police found the body after they received a report from Serdang Hospital informing them the school dropout had sought medical attention for excessive bleeding from her private parts. Medical checks showed the bleeding was the result of childbirth, which prompted the hospital to alert the police. Sepang district police chief Supt Imran Abd Rahman said the girl was brought to the hospital by her family on Monday night after they found her bleeding badly. "Her family was concerned about the bleeding so they brought her to the hospital,"

said Imran, adding the family was shocked to learn the cause of the bleeding. "After being informed, we went the next day to a double-storey shoplot at Pulau Meranti in Puchong where the girl lives with her family. In one of the rooms, we found the dead infant wrapped in a plastic bag, hidden in a pile of clothes." It is feared the baby boy died after delivery and may have died because of negligence. "The baby's condition indicated he may have purposely been left to die." The body was brought to Serdang Hospital for postmortem and the girl will be arrested after she recuperates. "We are also tracing the person who impregnated her to assist the investigation."

KAJANG

Hijacker arrested, lorry driver rescued POLICE arrested one of three hijackers of a lorry whose driver was found tied inside the vehicle which was transporting stolen plywood to a factory in Kajang. In the 6am incident on Sunday, three policemen on patrol in Sungai Chua became suspicious of a lorry which had just pulled into a petrol station. Kajang district police chief Ab Rashid Ab Wahab said that when the cops flagged down the lorry, three men jumped out and fled. "We managed to arrest one of the men and upon checking the lorry, found the driver bound and gagged," he said.

The lorry was laden with RM200,000 worth of stolen plywood and the police also found a parang in the vehicle. "The lorry was hijacked by the three suspects at Simpang Ampat, about 10km from Alor Gajah in Malacca where the vehicle had departed from." It is learnt the lorry driver, in his 30s, is also being investigated for his involvement in the stolen plywood meant for the black market, including the wood factory in Kajang. Ab Rashid said they are still searching for the other two suspects who are believed to be in the Kajang area.

KAJANG THEY may be "oldies" but that did not stop them from leading a life of crime. Three men — two Peruvians and a Spaniard — were arrested recently for being involved in no less than 12 cases of luggage theft at the KL International Airport (KLIA). Believed to have been active for over a year, the men, in their 50s, used well-choreographed tactics to steal luggage from under the noses of their victims. Their method involved one of them, neatly-dressed in office attire, approaching a victim and engaging the person in a conversation, while

By AIZAT SHARIF aizat@mmail.com.my

his accomplice would steal the trolley and bring the luggage to a getaway car parked outside the airport. The trio's downfall happened when they stole luggage belonging to a Malaysian senator last week. Sepang police chief Supt Imran Abd Rahman said the breakthrough came on Oct 22 after the 76-year-old Senator from Selangor lodged a police report after he had lost his luggage just as he was about to check in at the departure counter, on his way to Kota

Kinabalu, Sabah. "He was busy checking in at the counter when he realised his trolley missing," said Imran. Police later viewed a CCTV recording and spotted three foreigners stealing the luggage. An Ipad device, a pair of spectacles, clothes and several important documents were inside the luggage. Based on a tip-off, police raided their condominium in Ampang last Tuesday and found loads of the stolen goods. Police recovered 16 stolen luggages, several laptops and

iPad devices during the raid. “We believe the trio have been active since early this year and have been targetting victims at the KLIA, KLCC, KL Sentral, and several restaurants and hotels in the city,” he said. The suspects used social visit passes to enter the country. Once these expired, they would fly out before returning to Malaysia several months later. “This was another ploy to avoid our detection,” said Imran who urged those who had lost belongings at the airport to contact the Sepang police headquarters.

Alert neighbour and cops foil two burglars A NEIGHBOUR’S watchful eye and quick response from police averted a burglary at Taman Sri Jenaris on Wednesday. In the 4.30am incident, a woman shouted for help when she spotted two men breaking into her neighbour's house. Two policemen on motorcycle patrol heard her shouts and arrived in time to see the two men fleeing. After a brief scuffle, the policemen managed to arrest the men, both 24.

Kajang district police chief Ab Rashid Ab Wahab said the policemen sustained minor injuries on their hands and legs. "The burglars wrapped a dark plastic cover on their motorcycle number plate. We seized house-breaking tools, a screw-driver, chopping knife, gloves and a laptop bag." Checks revealed one suspect had a criminal record involving house break-in and theft and both suspects tested positive for methamphetamine (syabu).

Nepalese workers due to start work killed in van accident THREE Nepalese women were killed in an accident on the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE) near here yesterday barely two hours after arriving to work in Malaysia. The y were among 10 Nepalese workers who had arrived at KL International Airport and were travelling in a van towards Klang when it was involved in a collision with a car at 3pm. Four other workers and the van driver, identified as Shahibul, 40, were seriously injured. The remaining three workers escaped unharmed. Police identified the dead women as Kamala Devi Guragai, 31, Dil Kumari Shrestha, 32, and Dil Maya Gurung, 27.

The group was supposed to begin work at the Top Glove Sdn Bhd factory in Meru, Klang, today. The incident occurred under a bridge at Km4.4 of the expressway near Section 8 in Bukit Bandaraya, Shah Alam. The van crashed into a road divider after a collision with a car, a Perodua Myvi, which was believed to be trying to overtake it. Shahibul and the three injured persons — three men and a woman — were taken to the Klang Hospital. The driver of the car, a man in his early 20s, was also taken for treatment at the hospital. A lorry and another van

Boosting gold sales Campaign offers RM400,000 in prizes to lucky buyers

By Siti Nursuraya Ali suraya@mmail.com.my

TO boost its Gold-Nanza 2011 sales campaign, the Federation of Goldsmiths and Jewellers Associations of Malaysia (FGJAM) is offering 379 prizes worth RM400,000, including a 1kg gold bar worth RM200,000. At the launch of GoldNanza 2011 here last Friday by Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Deputy Minister Datuk Tan Lian Hoe, the federation's president, Ng Yih Pyng, said the campaign would run from Oct 15 to Dec 31. "All that a member of the public needs to do is spend a minimum of RM699 on gold or jewellery products from any of the more than 300 participating gold retail outlets in Malaysia during this period," he said.

BIG GOLD BAR: (From left) FGJAM advisors Yap Eng Kee and Tan Sri Ng Teck Fong, Tan, Ng and deputy president of FGJAM Ermin Siow Der Ming, with the 1kg gold bar

"There is no limit to the number of prizes a person can win, so the more you purchase the better your chances of winning the grand prize of a 1kg gold bar worth RM200,000 or one of the other 378 prizes."

Ng said gold made a good long-term investment and prices had been rising in the past decade. "This is the first time we have organised the Gold-Nanza and we hope it will help boost the

Google where your child is

WORKING parents will now be able to find out — on Google maps and at any time — the location of their children or loved ones in seconds and as accurately as merely five metres away. The service, the first of its kind in Malaysia was announced here yesterday and is available through a partnership between Maxis Berhad and KiddyTrack Sdn Bhd. Maxis general manager and head of corporate business Sekar Shanmugam said: “We hope this innovative solution will bring peace of mind to Malaysian parents." KiddyTrack co-founder Simon Lim said: “While exploring existing Global Positioning System (GPS) devices, we came up with a perfect child locator device that people could access and interact with, either on their handphone, or via personal computers by logging into the KiddyTrack web portal.” Lim said that after sending a simple SMS, users will be pro-

vided with a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) link to the Google maps that would show the location of their children or loved ones. The KiddyTrack device, which is small enough to fit into the palm of the hand, can also be used to track the elderly and employees, and can be attached to pets and vehicles. With just a press of a button, it can also alert up to five preinstalled numbers. The accuracy of the location shown will be determined by the availability of a signal from GPS. If a GPS signal is unavailable, cellbased information from Maxis will provide the location, accurate within a 50-metre radius. The GPS) and Global System for Mobile (GSM) locator solution will also use the Maxis 3G network and is powered by Maxis’ Managed Machine-to-Machine (M2M) technology.

Downside of highrise living Selangor MB orders PJ City Council to alleviate conditions at PPR flats

permanently parked: Vandalism a major issue

A HARD LOOK: Abdul Khalid making his rounds at the flats on Sunday

RESIDENTS of Putra Damai People's Housing Project (PPR) flats in Lembah Subang, Petaling Jaya, are irked by the poor upkeep there. "Our water supply is disrupted up to three times a week," says RAMANATHAN LETCHEMANAN, a 41-year-old unemployed disabled man who has been living there with his mother for 23 years, adding residents are often experienced dry taps for up to five hours at a time. He claims they have given up hope complaining to the Petaling Jaya City Council, claiming it has not done anything and only comes to inspect the place twice a year. "The lifts always broke down. Some have been this way for years. It is very hard on physically-disabled people as the building is 18 stories high." Another resident, GANE-

SAN NADARAJAN, who is 45 and jobless, says security is a major issue, especially without guards."Vandalism on the building and vehicles are often committed by local teenagers and drug addicts, who also break into parked cars, even in the day." He says the place is also poorly maintained. "The councils don't come here to clean up, so we have to do it ourselves." ● PETALING JAYA CITY COUNCIL (MBPJ) public relations officer Zainun Zakaria says a report on the matter will be forwarded to Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim within a fortnight. The MB visited low-cost apartments in Lembah Subang and Section 8, Kota Damansara, last Sunday, meeting residents and the Joint

Management Committees following a dialogue with residents two weeks earlier. Says Zainun: "We will then work out solutions to tackle these issues about a month after the report's submission." She says the council's main concerns are the faulty elevators and poor water supply. "We also urge residents to be more responsible, as some of the vandalism cases stem from locals themselves." When contacted, Abdul Khalid tells Hotline he has ordered the council to solve the problems within three months and he will make a return visit to ensure they are resolved. The MB also ordered them to review all contracts with maintenance companies to ensure all lifts function well.

IRRESPONSIBLE: The garbage filled awning is one example of poor maintenance

"MBPJ will also increase the number of security guards, and repair the lights and water pumps," says Abdul Khalid.

CLOSED FOR BUSINESS: Lifts like this one on the right has been out of service for the longest time

"They will also provide motorcycle parking space for the Lembah Subang units to avoid them from being brought onto the lifts,

which contributes significantly to the damage on the elevators." He says there are sufficient funds for the exercise.

Slow high-speed broadband fix SHAZLINDA HASHIM is in despair over getting her faulty UniFi broadband service up and running after not being able to use it for nearly a month. She says it did not help that a Telekom Malaysia technician promised to her did not show up to reconnect the high-speed Internet link. "My connection has not been working since Sept

30. A technician was supposed to come on Oct 3 but had not turned up." SHAZLINDA says she tried getting another technician but no appointment had been made for her. "I can't be waiting this long. "I am paying the bills and yet they are not responding." ● A SPOKESMAN for Telekom Malaysia Berhad assures the matter has

been investigated and resolved. "We discovered the absence of a connection was due to a faulty cable outside the premises. We have sent our technicians to fix the problem the following day." When contacted, SHAZLINDA, confirms her cable has been replaced and she is using the UniFi again.

Online comments www.mmail.com.my Silent treatment (Oct 27) ● HOW long has KTMB been in ser vice? It has been years and years, and it has never changed. How many times have we heard KTMB is striving to improve? The public has no choice but to take the KTM Komuter. Never punctual. Always delayed and, most of the time, service is cancelled. When trains are late, they

just keep quiet. And there seems to be more trains from Seremban than Port Klang which is always cancelled. KTMB should no longer delay looking into these problems. — butterfly Pestered over payment (Oct 27) ● USED the bank's services a few times. Never had a

'Killers will be tried' Investigation into Gaddafi's death launched as Nato mulls new mission

LIBYA'S new leaders vowed yesterday to bring the killers of Muammar Gaddafi to justice as Nato mulled a possible new role in the north African nation. "With regards to Gaddafi, we do not wait for anybody to tell us," said Abdel Hafiz Ghoga, vice-chairman of the ruling National Transitional Council at a news conference in Benghazi. "We had already launched an investigation. We have issued a code of ethics in handling of prisoners of war. I am sure that was an individual act and not an act of revolutionaries or the national army," Ghoga said. "Whoever is responsible for that (Gaddafi's killing) will be judged and given a fair trial." Until now, the NTC had claimed Gaddafi was killed in crossfire after he was captured in Sirte.

The statement came as Nato weighed a possible new role in Libya following Gaddafi's controversial death, as France said the UN would vote to end the alliance's mandate for an air war on Oct 31. The NTC has pleaded for an extension to the alliance's mandate but French foreign ministry spokesman Bernard Valero said the request was unlikely to be granted. "The fall of Sirte led the Libyan authorities to declare the liberation of Libyan territory as of Oct 23," Valero said in Paris. A UN envoy said international inspectors urgently need to visit hundreds of suspected weapons stockpiles in the north African country amid growing fears that huge numbers of shoulder-fired missiles have been looted. — AFP

Pakistan political capital simmers

TENS of thousands of people are expected to rally in Pakistan's political capital Lahore over the next few days calling for President Asif Ali Zardari to quit and for elections next year. Appetite is growing for polls in the city of eight million, Pakistan's second biggest and the capital of the most populous province Punjab, which commands the most number of seats in the national parliament. That makes it bitterly contested political territory where opposition leaders are holding major rallies targeting the unpopular Zardari and trying to whip up votes for the future. Chief among them is former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, whose Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) party controls Punjab and is the main opposition party at a national level. He is expected to draw

large crowds at a rally today. "Join the protest rally on Oct 28 against costly electricity, power cuts and the worst corruption," read banners strung up by PML-N throughout the city. Disillusionment is high with the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) that swept to power on a five-year ticket in February 2008. An irritant for Sharif and Zardari is cricket hero turned politician, Imran Khan, holding his own rally on Sunday at the Minar-e-Pakistan ground where the resolution for the creation of Pakistan was adopted on March 23, 1940. "Throw out this government and save the country," is his campaign slogan. His Tehreeke-Insaf (Movement for Justice) party boycotted the 2008 election but seems confident about its prospects. — AFP

Super Sic no more His apparent invincibility made his passing even more difficult to accept By Shamsul Yunos lifestyle@mmail.com.my Marco Simoncelli lived life large. He was born with big talent, made his fans smile with his big hairdo and infectious grin and even wore a helmet one size too big so that his afro could go racing with him. Simoncelli was the future face of MotoGP. In a year or two, Valentino Rossi’s oversized shoes would have been a good fit for him and the seventimes world champion treated Super Sic, as he was fondly known, like an apprentice. The master adored his talented ward on track and loved his big heart off of it. It must have been completely horrible for Rossi to be involved in the accident, the events were probably replayed countless times in his head as he wondered if he could have moved just a bit more to the right and avoided hitting Sic as he slid across the track. Of course, not everyone was happy with Super Sic’s aggressive riding style which pinched, shoved and pushed anyone he thought was slower to the side. But that was what racers did, that was what the best racers did. He had fallen off his machine numerous times, each time shrugging it off like a child falling off a favourite rocking horse. These top-flight racing machines were like toys to him and he

had fun on them every time. Everyone could see it. Simoncelli’s compatriot Andrea Dovizioso said it best: "He seemed invincible. What happened seemed impossible." Dovizioso and Simoncelli had ridden together in 125cc and 250cc as well as at MotoGP level. And Dovizioso added: "We raced together since we were kids. I saw him always pushing to the maximum. "He crashed many times but without major injuries.” Honda racer Dani Pedrosa had a run-in with Simoncelli earlier this season after the Italian broke the Spaniard's collarbone in a dangerous manoeuvre. He said: "Many times we ourselves forget how dangerous this sport can be and when you lose people on the way, nothing has any meaning.” Meanwhile, closer to home, Sepang International Circuit chairman, Datuk Mokhzani Mahathir extended his sympathies to Simoncelli’s family. “Marco will be remembered as a talented rider and a flamboyant character who never failed to put a smile on the faces of the racing fraternity and his fans with his cheerful demeanour. “Above all, he was a great man and a competitor who was destined for even greater things both on and off the track. MotoGP and the racing world is now a lesser place without him.”

IT seems that the flood situation in Thailand is hurting Honda operations in Southeast Asia very badly. The typical Japanese "Just In Time" production system requires that suppliers be stationed near the main factory and when the area north of Bangkok was submerged, everyone was hit. Honda Malaysia announced it will halt production in Pagoh Plant, Melaka from Tuesday onwards due to parts shortage caused by the floods in Thailand. “The floods have caused a huge number of factories in the supply chain to shut down, which include Honda Automobile (Thailand) Co Ltd and other major suppliers who supply parts to Honda Malaysia,” said their Press release. “The company has been actively accessing the situation and its parts suppliers’ recovery. Honda Malaysia is also studying the feasibility of sourcing parts from other countries until its suppliers’ production in Thailand

returns to normal,” the release added. “We announce with regret that we have to temporarily halt production in Pagoh Plant, Melaka due to parts shortage,” said Yoichiro Ueno, managing director and chief executive officer of Honda Malaysia. “We apologise for the delay of delivery and we appreciate the understanding of our customers. We are doing all we that can within our capacity to recover the production here in Malaysia as soon as possible,” he said. “The good news is that all our CBU models such as Insight, Stream and Freed are not affected, except for Jazz that is imported from Thailand, which we have sufficient stock to fulfill the current market demand.” Asian Honda Motor Co Ltd has recently donated 100 million baht (RM10 million) to Thai Red Cross Society to help flood victims in Thailand. Honda Malaysia will keep its customers informed of the plant’s progress and it looks forward to bringing good news to the customers.

A7 Sportback completes Audi line-up • Engine is 3.0 TFSI with 300hp and 400Nm • 7-speed S-Tronic twin-clutch, quattro • Price RM599,000 doesn’t include extras • Pearl paint = RM5,000, Heads-up display = RM6,500. LED headlamps = RM8,500. Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System = RM28,000. S-Line package = RM30,000. THE Audi A7 Sportback is a topflight coupé in the German tradition, solid, conservative and an excellent long-distance grand tourer that is based on a four-door floorpan, in this case it is the Audi A6. The A7 carries an RM85,000 premium over a similarly specified A6, to reflect its premium niche position.

Although it looks like a coupé, the A7 is actually a hatchback, thus the Sportback in the name. This configuration allows Audi to engineer a lot more versatility into the vehicle compared to the typical large coupé. Standard features for the A7 includes eight airbags, ABS, ESP, electric seats, six-CD head unit, xenon headlamps, Bluetooth connectivity, 7-inch multi function central display, power assist doors and cruise control.

Similar but different

Based on the sedan, the Sportback is a far cry from the four-door car TestDrive: Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback 2.4 By SHAMSUL YUNOS lifestyle@mmail.com.my THE biggest visual difference between the Mitsubishi Lancer sedan and the hatchback is, of course, the basic profile and the addition of an extra door or hatch while the most significant unseen change is the additional 400 cubic cm under the bonnet and on the face of it, but these two things should not really affect the general characteristics of a car. After all there are many family sedans, especially in Europe and Japan, that have hatchback cousins and many of them retain very similar characteristics and are virtually inseperable if the driver do not know whether they are driving a hatchback or sedan. After driving the Lancer Sportback for a day or two, we had a tough time trying to figure out why the hatchback feels significantly different from the sedan. If we consider practicality, then of course the hatchback wins because the additional door makes it much more versatile as a load carrier. Where a saloon would choke on a flatpacked bookshelf, a hatchback would swallow it whole and ask for more. But a hatchback alone should not make that much of a difference. Can a significantly larger engine change the character of a car beyond recognition? The Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and Nissan

Teana all offer variants powered by a 2.0-litre and 2.4-litre or 2.5 litre engine but in all these cases the changes are limited to the car's willingness to accelerate and it's attraction to

petrol stations. The Lancer Sportback 2.4 actually feels bigger, more luxurious and actually make people think of a crossover rather than just a hatchback. After a few days with the car, we felt brave enough to explain why it felt bigger and more luxurious but we could not figure out why some observers immediately thought that the car was a crossover. The Lancer Sportback feels more luxurious because the bigger engine feels more relaxed and this is matched to a suspension that is more in tune with middleaged, middle income posteriors, which is to say that it is softer than the sedan. Suspension setting can make or break a car and it can also change the characteristics of any vehicle, the same car can be made to feel luxurious and sporty by tweaking the suspension and Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia clearly needed the Sportback to feel luxurious because they need to differentiate the car from the sedan which has since migrated to a different brand. Although some people may not like the softer suspension, I think it was the right decision because buyers need to feel that their extra cash will give them added comfort. Although the suspension is more supple, the driving experience is still very pleasant, those who want to drive a little harder than usual would be able to push the car quite hard without suffering from too much tyre squeal from understeer.

After all, the buyers who are willing to cough up the premium do have choices, if they wanted something sporty they would just buy a more exciting car and Mitsubishi decided that the sedan, with the Evo variant has cornered the sporty image in Malaysia. So that takes care of why the Sportback feel more luxurious than the sedan but why does it feel bigger than the sedan? We believe that the large rear glass area of the hatchback contributes significantly to this perception of space and airiness. The extra glass area allows additional amount of light to enter the vehicle and this makes the car feel more airy. This is particularly important in a car like the Lancer Sportback, which has a cabin that is dominated by black leather upholstery. Priced at RM130,000, the Lancer Sportback is the best value-for-money 2.4-litre car on sale right now. If you are one of those who believe that there is no substitute for cubic capacity, this is the car for you. In the end, the Lancer feels very different because it is quieter, rides softer and generally feels more matured and refined. Sure it still looks like every school boy’s dream car, the Lancer Evo, from the front but this time it is wearing a smart pressed white cotton shirt, tailored pants and never threatens to attract adolescent attention.

Mitsubishi brin first electric car to M THE future is electric and it has been registered here, in the form of the Mitsubishi i-Miev. Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM), the official importer and distributor of Mitsubishi vehicles in Malaysia, registered i-Miev, a fully electric car recently. The company plans to run a series of activities to promote public awareness on the value of electric cars in terms of environmental impact. “Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia is pleased to be the first to bring in a mass-produced full-electric car to Malaysia to promote the awareness of zero-emission electric vehicles among the Malaysian public,” said Tetsuya Oda, chief executive officer of Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia. “Soon, Malaysians will get to know more about the innovative technology behind the i-MiEV, and

experience for themselves the benefits of an electric vehicle, as test drives will be available for the first i-MiEV in Malaysia,” he added. Producing 49 kW of power and 180 Nm of instant torque, the i-MiEV (Mitsubishi innovative Electric Vehicle) is powered solely by electricity, and can be recharged from a regular home socket. With a top speed of 130 km/h, the four-seater vehicle can run up to 160 kilometres (100 miles) after charging eight hours at 230 volts. The i-Miev accelerates 31 per cent faster than a gasoline-powered car in the 40 to 60 km/h range. “In the long run, we are happy to offer Malaysians the opportunity to purchase their own EV and make the choice towards a greener future. global direction to reduce the rate of global warming and to decrease dependence on fossil fuels,” said Oda. Since its debut, the i-MiEV has attracted a lot of attention worldwide. When Mitsubishi Motors started delivery of the i-MiEV to corporate, governmental and local authority users in July 2009 in Japan, it was the first auto manufacturer to offer a car that addressed the issues of environmental pollution, global warming and exhaustion of petroleum-based energy supplies. Sales to private customers in Japan started in April last year. Since then, Mitsubishi Motors has sold around 4,000 units of the electric car in Japan and has exported over 10,000 units to 19 countries throughout Europe, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand and Chile. The Mitsubishi i-MiEV is based on the gasoline-powered i minicar, but instead of an internal combustion engine, its sole power source is a lithium-ion battery pack powering a permanent magnet electric motor. The 330V battery is located under the floor deck, while the electric motor is housed under the luggage compartment.

The sleek Coupé slinks in t It is the MINI that Issigonis would not have designed but should have t MINI Coupé priced at RM249,888, MINI Connected package retails at RM14, 988 THE MINI Coupé is a unique development of the classic MINI shape and identity. It embodies a fresh approach to the idea of what a MINI can be while, somehow, maintaining the classic look and feel of the Alex Issigonis original. It is the MINI that Issigonis would not have designed but should have. “The New MINI Coupé represents a continued evolution of

the brand’s design language, bridging the gap between the classic MINI idea and a modern interpretation of its core values. “Even with its two-seater configuration, bespoke lowered suspension and the active rear spoiler, the MINI Coupe is still unmistakably a MINI.” said Farid Sulaiman, MINI manager at BMW Group Malaysia. Launching the model, Geoffrey Briscoe, managing director of BMW Group Malaysia said: “Whilst the new Coupé certainly represents new territory for this exciting marque, being the first ever two-seater MINI, it also comes replete with all the things that are synonymous with the brand; excitement, cheekiness

and performance coupled with an intensified go-kart driving experience for two!” “Last year, BMW Group Malaysia sold a total of 222 MINIs the entire year, but as of September this year, we’ve already surpassed that figure with 225 units sold. The Coupé will certainly contribute to what will truly be a record year for both brands in Malaysia.” The unveiling of the new Coupé also coincides with the official launch of the brand new MINI showroom in Glenmarie. As the third showroom in Malaysia, this dedicated 4S (Sales, Service, Systems and Spare-parts) showroom

will be the largest MINI outlet in the country at 3,300sq ft. Available in the Malaysian market from Oct 22, the new MINI Coupé will be introduced in the single engine format — the 1.6 litre MINI Cooper S Coupé. The twin-scroll turbocharged and petrol direct injection engine develops 135kW/184 hp at 5,500 rpm, making it the world’s most efficient engine in its displacement class, but more importantly, it allows the new MINI Cooper S Coupé to hit the 0 to 100 km/h mark in just 7.1 seconds, while giving it a top speed of 224 km/h. The latest addition to the MINI family comes with a six-speed automatic gearbox to maximise en-

gine performance and driver fun. The Coupé also gets a unique suspension setup to match its sporty personality and specific weight balance. The set-up is the familiar MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension. An active rear spoiler, fitted for the first time on a MINI is also integrated in the boot lid. This spoiler pops up automatically when the new MINI Coupé reaches a speed of 80 km/h, with the four-part control mechanism returning the spoiler to its rest position at speeds of under 60 km/h. This visually striking mechanism serves to reduce lift at the rear axle, optimising both aerodynamic balance and grip levels of the new MINI Coupé.

Tiguan to challenge compact SUV market VOLKSWAGEN is on the offensive and the latest addition to their growing list of Malaysian model line-up is the compact SUV, the Tiguan, a smaller copy of the Touareg. The Tiguan comes with Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel drive system and offers various design features such as fuel efficient 2.0-litre TSI engine and 7-speed DSG transmission. Volkswagen Group Malaysia managing director Ricky Tay described the Tiguan as a very special SUV, which is equipped with all the right qualities of a larger-sized vehicle. “The innovation and technology built into the vehicle is also outstanding, boasting class-leading qualities. This new Tiguan is further enhanced with Volkswagen’s innovation, design and technology,” he said. The TSI engine churns out 210PS and sends power to the 4motion all-wheel drive system through a 7-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG). With so much power, the Tiguan has rather impressive performance figures. The 280Nm of torque boasts 0-100kph sprint that takes only 7.3 seconds while the power gives it a top speed of 213kph. Like all TSI engines, fuel consumption is the strong point and the Tiguan consumes 8.6

litres/100km on the combined cycle. The styling of the Tiguan is unmistakably Volkswagen, with its distinctive shape, sculpted bodylines and refined design. Other notable features on the Tiguan include Bi-Xenon headlights with Daytime Running Lights (DRL), headlight washer system, foldable side mirrors that are separately-heated and electrically adjustable, silver anodised roof rails and 17-inch “New Orleans” alloy wheels. Occupants get the luxury treatment with “Vienna” leather upholstery wither in Titanium Black or Furioso, a leather-trimmed 3-spoke multi-function steering wheel and gear-knob and carpet mats. Ambience illumination and indirect dashboard lighting offers a warm and soothing feel. For added convenience, the Tiguan comes with the Climatronic air-conditioning system, cruise control, MEDIA-IN multimedia interface for iPod and USB, Park

Distance Control (PDC) with ‘Rear Assist’ rear view camera, RCD510 audio with MP3 replay function, a 6-disc CD changer including 8 front and rear loudspeakers. Safety is at the forefront of every Volkswagen vehicle. The Tiguan has a host of safety features to ensure the true Volkswagen experience. Besides the ABS, EBD and Electronic Stability Programme, the Tiguan comes equipped with the Anti-Slip Regulator, Comfort Brake Assistant, Electronic Parking Brake with Auto Hold Function, the Electronic Vehicle Immobilisation Device, Engine Drag Torque Control, flat tyre indicator and rain sensors. Priced at RM236,888, the Tiguan is available in nine colours: One solid colour of Candy White, seven metallic shades of Reflex Silver, Wild Cherry Red, Silver Leaf, Toffee Brown, Night Blue, Pepper Grey and Titanium Beige. Another shade is the Deep Black pearl effect.

HOW TO PLAY Sudoku X is a simple variation of Sudoku with the only difference being the squares in white (which make up the numeral X) need to tally from 1 to 9 along with the remaining coloured squares.

Cup final marred by 'overpriced' tickets

By HARESH DEOL haresh@mmail.com.my

IT has been an interesting buildup to the Malaysia Cup final at Shah Alam Stadium tomorrow. Reports on the preparation of Terengganu and Negri Sembilan seem to be overshadowed by the pricing of tickets. At RM50 each, it has not only riled up the fans but also politicians. Negri fans have pleaded to their fellow supporters not to buy the tickets but support the team from outside the stadium instead. The Terengganu State government, meanwhile, subsidised RM25 for each ticket. All this drama has somehow left Negri coach Azraai Khor Abdullah smiling. The pressure is off the team as he can now concentrate on building the morale of the players as they plan to outplay the Turtles. Prior to the ticket issue, many had hyped up Terengganu to be the clear favourites. The east coast team will also be banking on striker Abdul Manaf Mamat who has been in fine

AZRAAI: Taking advantage of the 'drama'

form of late. "It's good as we are playing as the underdogs, so there will be less pressure," said Azraai. "The boys are fit. Everything is in place. It's now all about translating what we have practiced on the field for 90 minutes." Azraai, who has seen success with Kedah having won the treble twice (2007, 2008),

is afraid some of the players could suffer from stage fright. "I've seen a final atmosphere before. There are many seasoned players, such as Shukor (Adan), who are able to soak in the pressure. I'm just worried about the younger players who lack the experience of playing in big events."

Terengganu seem to be a well-balanced side and have shown their maturity on the pitch when tackling the likes of Kelantan in the quarterfinal and Selangor in the semifinal. However, Negri topped Group B prior to trooping into the next round while Terengganu were second due to goal difference. Negri and Terengganu settled for a goalless draw in the group stage but Azraai's men managed a 1-0 win over the east coast side in their following clash. "We've edged them before so let's see what happens tomorrow," said Azraai. Meanwhile, Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) will carry a live telecast of the Malaysia Cup final between Negri Sembilan and Terengganu tomorrow. The live telecast from Stadium Shah Alam will begin at 8.40pm, RTM said in a statement.

The 31-year-old, who had targeted a top 20 finish, finished Day One tied at 41, on one-above 70, alongside Vijay Singh, Stuart Appleby and Chan Yih-shin. "There is no reason for me to go for the kill by taking risks. Yes, I trail the leaders by nine shots but its best I play my normal game, without any pressure," said Shaaban. "I know where I struggled and all I need to do is to correct that." Shaaban was disappointed with his performance in the first nine holes. He had been three-above-par and was then left to chase the game. He picked up his

game then on. "When I started to get used to the greens, I played better," said Shaaban, citing he had two-under from holes nine to 18. "There is still time for me to finish within the top 20. I hope I can end the day with either two or threeunder par." Meanwhile, Malaysia's other representative Danny Chia managed to even par to finish tied at 33 alongside seven other golfers. Just a day after Danny had expressed disappointment over the lack of national representation at the tournament, Shaaban joined ranks in asking for there to be more Malaysians competing. "There are not many world class tournament held here. It would be good if more sponsor's exemptions were given to local golfers.

"Playing with some of the best will improve our golfers," said Shaaban. ARIs: Lane conditions are tough

Elite feat for youth bowler Aris NATIONAL youth bowler Aris Ardila is showing that competing with the national elite bowlers is improving his game. T h e S a r aw a k i a n s u rpr is e d e ver yone wit h a second place standing in the KL International Open Championship Men's Open category yesterday. "B owling in this category made me double my efforts. I was constantly tr ying to match Adrian Ang, Zulmazran Zulkifli and other elite squad bowlers," said Aris. "The next thing I knew, I fired 742 total pinfalls which placed me in second spot. "I'm glad with today's showing considering the lane conditions are tough for power bowlers like me." Aris is behind national b owler, Mohd Syaf iq Ridhwan, who has a total of 765. In third place is Penangite Adrian Ang, with a total of 737, while Zulmazran Zulkfli is in fourth spot with 702. Ironically, Aris, who is actually supposed to bowl in the Youth Open category, has made five attempts in the youth category and is only placed 14th with his total of 616. "I am glad that I did well in the Men's Open and my

next aim in the finals is to finish among the top six to make the stepladders," he added. Aris has only won one Open categor y event in the Penang Open in 2008 when he was 17. But he has competed in several Open categories, including the Malaysian Open last year where he finished second to the late Khoo Beng Khai and finished tenth in the Philippines Open. Besides Syafiq, Adrian and Zukmazran, all the other Sea Games-bound bowlers also made the cut to be among the top 15. Aaron Kong is in tenth spot (668), Muhd Nur Aiman in 11th spot (662) and Alex Liew in 13th spot (654). Meanwhile, in the Women's Open, Siti Safiyah Amirah and Hee Kar Yen continued to maintain their top two spots with their overnight scores of 713 and 710 respectively, while Esther Cheah, is in third spot with 690. Fellow elilte bowler Sin Li Jane improved from third to fourth spot with 656 pinfalls. The Men and Women's Open final will be held on Saturday at Endah Parade Megalanes in Sri Petaling. The stepladder finals will follow thereafter.

No stopping her grunting

... but thrills are still expected at inaugural Indian GP

IT'S a big weekend for Formula 1 as we head to the Buddh International Circuit for the first Indian Grand Prix. Both championships — drivers and constructors — may have already been taken by Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull, but with the inaugural race taking place in the world's second largest populated country, the win is bound to be highly coveted. It's hard to know what to expect from a circuit no one has driven on, but the signs are there that it will be a good one. Drivers walking the circuit have all commented on the fast corners with long sweeps. Overtaking should be good too, with a track that is 20 metres wide. Most importantly, there is quite a bit of gradient which is different from the usual flat modern track. Up and down,

FromThe Driver'sSeat

With Alex Yoong with quick corners blending into one another, is what gets drivers going, and the simulations show that is what we should expect this weekend. The track seems smooth from preliminar y walks around the track, so tyre wear should not be too bad. Pirelli have brought the hard and soft tyres (instead of hard and medium) for this weekend, which means we should see a big time difference between the two compounds. This, coupled with the fact that tyre wear should be low, should see most drivers starting on the soft, then stop two or three times before a short

stint at the end of the race on the hard tyres. Teams must run their drivers in the race on both compounds, and the time loss per lap on the hard tyres will negate any advantage by doing a stop less and using the hard tyres at the beginning of the race. Red Bull may have won the last race, but we have seen an upturn from McLaren. Their updates certainly have worked, and if Lewis Hamilton had not lost 10 points of front down force, I feel he would have won at Korea. He will start as my slight favourite over the Red Bull

this weekend. As for the rest of the field, we will see them experimenting with different settings and updates with an eye on next year's cars. All, except for Sauber and Force India, who are in a close fight for sixth place in the championship. Also, expect there to be a lot of focus on Force India as it will be their home Grand Prix. It also will be a good weekend for Narain Karthikeyan as he races for the first time in his HRT in front of his countrymen. With all this local interest, Formula 1 could not have hoped for a better entry into the Indian market.  Catch former Formula 1 driver Alex Yoong on STAR Sports' coverage of this weekend's inaugural India GP on Race Day and Chequered Flag. SERDANG: MALAYSIAN SPORTS TRADE & GOLF EXPO 2011

Largest sports expo launched Event hopes to ride wave of ongoing PGA Tour

By RAM ANAND ramanand@mmail.com.my

IN an attempt to bolster the business of sports in Malaysia, the country’s largest sports expo was launched today under the purview of Sports and Youth Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek. The Malaysia Sports Trade and Golf Expo (MSTGE) 2011, which features over 200 exhibitors, was launched in a packed exhibition hall at the Mines International Exhibition and Convention Centre (MIECC). This is the second edition of the event that drew over 150 exhibitors last year, and this time was made bigger by an additional golf expo. The expo was held in conjunction with the CIMB Asia Pacific Classic Malaysia, a PGA Tour championship that also starts today at the Mines Resort and Golf Club. The event is being coorganised by the Ministry of

Sports and Youth, MS3 Golf Sdn Bhd, and Mines Event Management Sdn Bhd respectively. "This event underlines the growing importance of the sports industry to our economy. We are moving forward and I am sure this industry will continue to expand in the future with more people making sports as their business," said Shabery

during his speech. He also asked business entities and sports event organisers to embark on a different business model that includes an attractive sponsorship packaging. "These will unlock multiple revenue streams required to make the sports events economically sustainable which will reduce the financial burden on the

government," he added. Though the event was held to promote sports as a form of potential business for the public, the Malaysian Sports Industry Division Under Secretary Ibrahim Mohd Yusof admitted that the organisers are not expecting to see revenue anytime soon. "This event is about raising awareness, to tell people that sports can be adopted as a business model as well. If we talk about profits, it will probably be years before we can finally see the results (for profits in sports industry)," Ibrahim said. Asked about the target market for the expo, he revealed that the Golf Expo is expected to draw in visitors attending the PGA Tour that is being held near the exhibition centre. "There are tourists who will be coming in to attend the golf event, so we are hoping to lure them in here for the expo," he said.

"This is also a good opportunity for our local people to display their sports or golf products that they have to offer," he added. The MSTGE 2011 will be held till Sunday at the MIECC between 10am till 6pm today and 10am till 8pm tomorrow and Sunday. Admission is free to members of the public.

Corporate bodies not ready to sponsor major sports events

CORPORATE entities in Malaysia are not yet ready to start organising or sponsoring major Malaysian sports events, said Sports Industry Malaysia CEO Nur Jasni Mohamed. Speaking during the Malaysian Sports Industry Convention 2011 at the Mines International Exhibition and Convention Centre, he said that corporate entities still lack understanding of what sports has got to offer for their business returns. "It's not that they don't want to, but they lack the understanding. What you get today are sports associations who think a sports event is their responsibility, whereas they start doing what is actually a sponsor's responsibility," he elaborated. "Here, when a sports event is held, we see logos all over the place. We need to start thinking beyond these logos and move towards positive

Return of Investments (ROI)," he added. Asked about the impact that the Commonwealth Games had on Malaysia back in 1998, he affirmed his belief

that the event has had a positive impact for sports in Malaysia. "We had eight world No 1's two years ago. I think that is an indirect impact of the

event being held in this country," he said, while claiming a "glass ceiling was broken" when Malaysia successfully organised the games. The Director of

Organisational Development for the National Sports Council Malaysia, Suhardi Alias, shed more light as to why corporate bodies still think twice before committing to sports activities. "The old school of thought is that sponsorship is a form of corporate social responsibility," he said. "But the fact is that sponsorship nowadays can wield returns. There is a return for the investment," he added. Sports and Youth Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek later on told reporters that the ministry is planning to appoint a body or have a one-stop centre that can absorb event ideas. "At the moment, we have the Education Ministry having an event, the Sports Ministry having an event, and so on. What we will try to do is to form an alliance and set up a centre that can evaluate

Credit to tiny club for sensational early season run

HOLA! A FORMER girlfriend of a superstar, reportedly, revealed she was chased by his mum swinging a frying pan! Guess who? More of that episode, which happened a few years ago, later as the talking point now is the performance of surprise leaders in Primera Liga — not Barcelona or Real Madrid but tiny Valencia-based Levante. Yes, Levante continued their extraordinary early-season run when Ruben Suarez (pic) struck a powerful stoppage-time free-kick to snatch a 3-2 comeback win over Real Sociedad at home on Wednesday. Six straight wins lifted the still unbeaten Levante, whose annual budget of around €20 million is one of the smallest in the league, to the top spot again. Levante now have 23 points from nine games — one more than Real and two ahead of Barca. Many are saying Levante will not be able to sustain their run, which included a 1-0 win over Real. But still, their results thus far are remarkable to say the least and there are always this chance of them finishing at least a place in the Europa League if they maintain their form. After all, they have this cushion point to work their way towards finishing in a grand and memorable manner. The man behind Levante's feat is manager Juan Ignacio Martinez, who revealed he

used to be a bodyguard for a Spanish singer. "This run we are on is almost impossible. Having to talk so much about being top of the table is quite difficult psychologically so coming back to win against Sociedad is even more impressive," said the 47-yearold Martinez, who is in his debut top-flight campaign. Levante do not boast many stars as their players are unknown, especially outside Spain. But one of them must be veteran midfielder Juanlu, who is their current top scorer with five goals — two in last Sunday's 3-0 win over Villarreal. "It's a miracle that a team like Levante are the leaders with such a low budget," Juanlu told Marca.

Vialli hails City star Mancini FORMER Chelsea star Gianluca Vialli believes Roberto Mancini will lead Manchester City to the Premier League title sooner than later. City are at the top of the table, having humiliated bitter rivals Manchester United 6-1 last weekend, and Vialli believes it will be a matter of time before the competition trophy ends up at Eastlands under Mancini's leadership. "He is one of the best managers. He's likely to win the championship if not this year, next year, with City," Vialli told talkSPORT. "He's a bit underestimated, especially when he first came to England. I remember people asking why City didn't go for someone with more experience and a proven track record and the guy had just

won three Italian championships, with Inter Milan winning 17 games in a row. "When you win 17 games in a row, that means as a manager you have got something. Roberto is very good at managing big-name players. "He doesn't care about what they do, or what they think, he just picks whatever team he thinks is the best. And he is good at identifying the right players for the side when he has got to go and sign them, which is a great gift." But it won't just be the Premier League that Mancini will seek, as Vialli also believes that his compatriot has the Champions League in his sights. "You become truly great only when you win in Europe — the Champions League," said the Italian.

"With what a Barca or Real player earns, you could pay 25 players in this squad. This is very nice, but we all know that we will be fighting until death for survival," said the 31-year-old. Another player who is playing a key role for Levante is 27-year-old striker, Arouna Kone, from Ivory Coast. He is on loan from Sevilla. Then there is another striker in 25-year-old France-born Moroccan, Nabil El Zhar, who used to play for English club Liverpool. Levante's next match is away to unpredictable Osasuna on Sunday (11pm) and it won't be a surprise if they maintain their unbeaten streak. Now to the swinging frying pan incident. It's Lionel Messi's former girlfriend. Macarena Lemos, a 20-yearold model from Rosario who briefly dated Messi, cliams she was out shopping with her mother and her aunt when she noticed the player's parent was following her and taking photographs. "She was following me and taking photos until I turned around and asked her what was going on," Lemos told Telenoche. "That's when she started insulting me. What was she

doing there in the electronics section, with a frying pan in her hand? She was following me with a telephone and a frying pan." Lemos was bemused by the actions of Mrs Messi, claiming she has never gone on record with any details of their relationship. "I was 14 and he was 18, and I didn't reveal anything about our relationship," she said. "She treated me like I was nothing, as if I were hanging from her son's ribs. She seems to think I said something to a magazine, but I never did. They are confused. "It shocked me because I wasn't expecting something like that to happen on a Sunday afternoon, especially with my mother and my aunt present. He has bodyguards, but I don't. I go out on the street and meet my friends like a normal person." Well, maybe, Mrs Messi was overprotective of her son. In another development, Barca have reportedly signed up Bollywood star Ranbir Kapoor as their Indian brand ambassador. According to the Economic Times, Kapoor will be involved in growing the popularity of football and Barca in India with the deal set to be confirmed next month. "It is a huge fan moment for me. To be associated with a team that boasts of names like (Messi and Xavi) is just awesome. My role is to do my bit as a Barca fan," said Kapoor. Good for Barca. Adios!

Angel loving his touches for Real REAL MADRID winger Angel di Maria was delighted to score in their 3-0 win over Villarreal at Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday. The Argentina international scored his first goal of the season, and Real's third in the game, in the 30th minute after previously providing assists for his side's first two goals. And di Maria stressed that he is full of confidence again following his recent impressive showings. "I'm happy with the victory and also with my goal because I hadn't scored for a long time. I had a chance to score against Villarreal and it

was a beautiful thing for me," he told Real's website. "I'm happy because things are going well for me. I'm confident again, which is important to me. I hope things continue to go well for me." Di Maria has already set up seven league goals this season and tops the assist chart after nine games. Meanwhile, striker Karim Benzema is also delighted with the win over Villarreal and feels Real are the best team in Spain right now. Benzema scored after just six minutes before Kaka and di Maria put the match to bed before half-time.

But Benzema said football is about winning rather than scoring. "I like Real to play touch football and also to counterattack. We gave a great performance, especially in the first-half. I believe Real are the strongest team in Primera Liga," said Benzema. "This victory is important to the team. It doesn't matter if Gonzalo Higuain or I score. Our mission is to score and help the team. The important thing in football is to win." Real are now second in the table with 22 points from nine matches. They trail Levante, who are top, by one point.

QUEENS PARK RANGERS confirmed Paddy Kenny, Shaun Derry and Clint Hill will not be giving any evidence to the Football Association regarding the investigation into John Terry's alleged racist remarks. The FA are currently looking into allegations that Chelsea captain Terry racially abused QPR defender

Anton Ferdinand during last Sunday's derby at Loftus Road. A member of the public complained to the police regarding the alleged incident, while QPR also registered a complaint with the FA. Terry categorically denied the allegations and welcomed the inquiry as an opportunity

to clear his name. Reports claimed that QPR trio Kenny, Derry and Hill were all prepared to provide evidence to support the allegations as part of the investigation. However, QPR stated that the players "have not and will not be giving evidence to the FA's investigation". "There is no truth in these

stories whatsoever," said a QPR spokesman. "None of the three players have been called to give evidence or will be called to give evidence." Experienced midfielder Derry was not even on the pitch at the time when the alleged remarks were made during QPR's 1-0 win over the Blues.

The darkest of days

Can dazed United bounce back, as always, after City bashing? "THERE WILL BE RESPONSE." Those were the words of Alex Ferguson, following Manchester United's 6-1 thrashing last Sunday by arch city rivals Manchester City. Ferguson described it as "our worst ever day — the worst result in my history, ever." Twenty two years ago, with Ferguson three years into his tenure at United, his side lost 5-1 at Maine Road. He went home and buried his head under a pillow. One can only imagine how he spent last Sunday evening, although I do hope the family cat was watching the game and decided to go out for dinner. The humiliation at Old Trafford was compounded by the identity of the opponents, as well as the manner of the defeat. Many will point to the sending-off of Jonny Evans as a turning point in the game, and one can only speculate on what might have been had numerical parity remained throughout the match. It's worth noting, however, that City were already a goal to the good, and having weathered the first 20 minutes of United domination, were looking the better side. No one though would have anticipated the subsequent capitulation, based as it was on United's near "suicidal" approach to the remainder of the game — assistant manager Mike Phelan's word, not mine. Ferguson bemoaned the role of his senior players, singling out Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra for particular censure, after the apparently indiscriminate way his team tried to attack when outnumbered.

GameOn with Andrew Leci It seems slightly unfair, given that United pride themselves on their resilience and never-saydie attitude — aspects of every United side under Ferguson that has managed to achieve so many late comebacks and reversals of fortune. The difference last Sunday though was that City proved they have finally emerged from the shadows of perceived negativity under Roberto Mancini, and were as cold-blooded, efficient and ruthless as many of Ferguson's sides have been in the past. 'You can only beat what's in front of you', as the saying goes, and City did that with an almost frightening relish. Much of the talk before the game revolved around the extent to which the gap between the two Manchester clubs has been narrowed. I think we're going to have to change the nature of the question after last Sunday's game, because City proved in terms of attacking options, midfield creativity and squad strength in depth, they're the ones setting the pace right now, and United are lagging behind. The difference between the two teams was exemplified in central midfield, where Anderson and Darren Fletcher laboured for United, and Yaya Toure and James Milner put in performances of stunning intensity. In David Silva, City have the player of the season so far, and

his skill, vision and the ability to pick out a pass was unmatched. Being at Old Trafford for the game, and being able to look at the bigger picture in terms of every player's movement, it became easy to see why City are so difficult to play against at the moment. Forward of the back five, no one player seemed to have a set position, flitting in and out of certain roles, and making himself almost impossible to pick up or mark. Admittedly City did have plenty of space after Evans' dismissal, but managers often say that it's more difficult to play against 10 men. With the pace and movement that City were able to provide, it was never going to be a problem. Despite Ferguson's disappointment and the damage he's done to his pillow, no one, and I mean no one, is writing off United just yet. Those who have done so previously have, more often than not, received nasty shocks. As Ferguson said: "We usually get the show on the road in the second-half of the season, and that will have to be the case." The defeat against City was a hammer blow for sure, but nothing even remotely resembling a fatal one. It was one game, and the damage to reputation and sense of belief will have been infinitely greater than the loss of three points. One can only wait and see what the "response" will be

EVANS

— although 11 changes to the starting line-up for the League Cup win against Aldershot in midweek may have been a sign. It all starts at Goodison Park tomorrow — a venue in which United haven't won a league game since September 2007 — and there is more than a suggestion that some of the senior players will pay the price of their apparent failings last Sunday with their starting places. Ferguson's "worst ever day" may well turn out to be a watershed moment in this Premier League season, if not in Premier League history, but whether it works to the benefit or the detriment of the most successful club in English football, remains to be seen.  Catch Andrew Leci on Monday Night Verdict every Monday at 8pm on ESPN and send in your feedback to theverdict@espnstar.com

Devils send Scholes to watch striker MANCHESTER UNITED have stepped up their interest in Huddersfield striker Jordan Rhodes, after sending newly appointed scout Paul Scholes to run the rule over the free-scoring 21-year-old. Rhodes' superb form has led to increased speculation about his future, with a host of Premier League clubs now upping their interest in the powerful hitman, who bagged 22 strikes in all competitions last term. Sir Alex Ferguson has since been put on to the player by Scotland U-21 boss Billy Stark, and with United loanee Oliver Norwood also in action last night, he instructed Scholes to take a closer look and report back. The son of an Indonesian father, Nainggolan, 23, has caught the eye of City scouts while playing in Italy and has also interested Serie A clubs AC Milan, Inter Milan and Napoli. City are also interested in 21-year-old Dutch midfielder Strootman, who has been highly recommended to Inter by his compatriot Wesley Sneijder. "It's not the first time that the club have asked me my opinion. Quality is always more than welcome here and Kevin has plenty of that," said Sneijder of Strootman, who is rated as one of Holland's hottest prospects.

FAM website hacked! DISGRUNTLED by the ticket pricing for the Malaysia Cup final, fans have taken matters into their hands by hacking into the FA of Malaysia (FAM) official website. The website sees an altered logo with derogatory words aimed at the national association. This came about after FAM decided to price the tickets at RM50 each. The final between Terengganu and Negri Sembilan will be held tomorrow (kick off 8.45pm) at Shah Alam Stadium.

Ferguson to axe several United flops ahead of Everton clash

MANCHESTER UNITED manager Sir Alex Ferguson is set to axe several of his derby flops for tomorrow’s away match against Everton. Ferguson is still seething over the way his side imploded to lose 6-1 to Manchester City last Sunday and will show his ruthless side to some of his established stars. Defenders Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra, whom Ferguson accused of failing to use their experience to keep the scoreline respectable against City, are set to be his most high-profile victims. Ferguson is said to pair Nemanja Vidic and Phil Jones in central defence against Everton, with Chris Smalling and Fabio Da Silva occupying the fullback roles. In central midfield, Darren Fletcher and Anderson, who were overrun against City, are set to make way for Tom Cleverley and Michael Carrick, with Ferguson determined to send out

a clear message to his underperforming players. Strikers Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen pushed their claims for starting places with their exploits in Tuesday’s 3-0 League Cup win over Aldershot, in which both men scored. But Ferguson has no desire to change his attack, so Wayne Rooney is set to lead the line against his former club with support from Javier Hernandez or Danny Welbeck, as United seek their first league win at Goodison since September 2007. United can close the gap on league leaders City to two points with victory in their noon kick-off. City are not in action until later in the afternoon when they host Wolves. Ferguson’s assistant Mike Phelan was a member of the United side who lost 5-1 to City at Maine Road in 1989 — their worst defeat to their local rivals in recent memory until last Sunday’s Old Trafford mauling. Phelan is still haunted by

that defeat and called on United’s current players to use their own humiliating experience against their neighbours to rediscover their winning mentality. “I’ve never forgotten the hurt of the 5-1,” Phelan told Daily Mirror. “But you react, you pull together. “We knew we were a good group of players, just as this group knows it’s a good group of players. “Something has happened that we didn’t think could happen, as it did in 1989. But now it’s happened, it’s a question of ‘Do you pull together or do you let it affect you?’ “You have to take the hurt on board and deal with it. You find whether you have the success in you to go again. “It’s only three points — we’re not even into double figures in games yet in the league. You can’t afford to let it spiral out of control and be the defining moment of your season. “It’s one game which we have to overcome.”

Thousands turn out for Simoncelli funeral balloons emblazoned with No 58, the number of Simoncelli’s bike when he raced. His father Paolo, mother Rossella, sister Martina, grandfather and girlfriend Kate were joined in the church by the likes of Rossi and fellow racers Jorge Lorenzo, Randy De Puniet and Mattia Pasini as well as renowned MotoGP doctor Claudio Costa. Italian Minister of Youth Giorgia Meloni and Junior Sports Minister Rocco Crimi were also present. The bishop of Rimini Francesco Lambiasi said Simoncelli had now gone to a better place. “The night before his last

THOUSANDS of people lined the streets in the little town of Coriano in the Rimini region of Italy to pay tribute to Marco Simoncelli, who was killed in Sepang on Sunday. Stars from the world of motorcyling such as Simoncelli’s close friend Valentino Rossi, the seven-time world champion, were present at the Italian’s funeral. His coffin was carried by some of Simoncelli’s childhood friends from the town’s theatre, where a remembrance room had been set-up, to the Santa Maria church where the funeral service was held. Crowds clapped as the coffin passed and released red

“And now, dolefully, we cannot see you but there is the pleasure and joy in knowing that you have reached the highest podium there is.”

Rossi helped push Simoncelli’s racing bike behind the coffin as it left the church. Outside the church Simoncelli’s girlfriend echoed the words of Don McLean in his song dedicated to Vincent Van Gogh. “He had only qualities, he was perfect. And those who are too perfect cannot live amongst us mere mortals,” she said. As well as those crammed inside the little town, more than 1,000 people went to the nearby Misano race-track to watch proceedings on giant screens, although that was far fewer than the 10,000 expected. — AFP
