Zulkifli: I only learnt of Perkasa post from media reports

“I have no knowledge of the election and I only found out about it after reading newspaper reports,” he told The Malay Mail yesterday.

The independent MP also revealed that no prior discussion had taken place before the election and no one had informed him about his new position.

He also said he had yet to accept the post.

“How can I accept it when I have not even received an official letter from Perkasa informing me about the election?” he asked.

The Malay Mail learnt that Perkasa is preparing an official letter to inform Zulkifli about his appointment.

A source familiar with the matter said an official letter would be sent to Zulkifli soon.

Perkasa had elected Zulkifli as its vice-president during the group’s second general assembly last Wednesday. The election

was made after its supreme council member Muhammad Zahid Mohd Arip tabled an emergency motion, which was passed with unanimous consent.

However, while Zulkifli claimed ignorance over his appointment, it is learnt that he was present at the general assembly held at Kompleks Centrum in Taman Setiawangsa.

He had apparently told report-

ers that morning he was at the function at Perkasa’s invitation.

It is not known if he is a member of the NGO. It was earlier reported that Zulkifli will be replacing Datuk Mokhtar Samad, who vacated the seat earlier this year to concentrate on his duties as Malay Contractors Association of Malaysia (PKMM) president.

The four other vice-presidents are Dr Ashraf Wajidi Dasuki, Dr Zubir Harun, Abang Naseer Abang Hadari and Musli Oli. Perkasa last overhauled its leadership in March, following the resignation of Perkasa Youth chief Arman Azha Abu Hanifah.

Zulkifli, now an independent MP, made headlines in March last year after he was sacked by Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR).

He was sacked after he lodged a police report against Pas’ Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad and also for speaking against the party and coalition members in a television interview.

MTUC protest to go on 17 venues picked to show discontent over amendments to Employment Act

THE Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) will carry out its nationwide protest tomorrow to ensure its discontent with amendments made to the Employment Act is heard.

MTUC secretary-general Abdul Halim Mansor told The Malay Mail yesterday the protest would be held at various locations nationwide and that police had been informed.

"Our dispute is not with our employers but in taking away our rights as workers through the amendments.

“We have informed the police, including the IGP and State police chiefs, on the locations and time of our protest.

It will be peaceful and we will deploye our officers to ensure the discipline."

Earlier this week, Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam said the

protest was illegal as it did not fall into the context of dispute between employers and employees.

To this, Abdul Halim said: “The question of whether this protest is halal or haram should not even be made."

MTUC expects a turnup of 500 of its members at each of the 17 locations throughout the country to protest against the amendments to the Act. Abdul Halim said he did not think there would be any problem with the police as "they have always been supportive” of MTUC.

On whether the protest would affect rush-hour traffic, he said the MTUC officers at each location would maintain discipline. He also hoped police would help with the traffic flow and ensure safety of protesters.

The MTUC's main complaint against the amendments is its belief it is "a return to slavery" and that investors will only hire Malaysians as contract workers instead of permanent staff.

A TOTAL of RM10 billion from the RM15 billion allocated for the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) has been utilised, with 70 of the 131 Entry Point Projects (EPPs) implemented within a year from its launch.

Performance Management and Delivery Unit (Pemandu) chief executive officer Datuk Seri Idris Jala said the amount used constituted 64 per cent of the total investments committed for 2011.

"The EPPs are progressing well. The 70 EPPs are equivalent to 53 per cent from the

The amendments to the Act were approved by Parliament on Oct 6.

BATU MP Tian Chua has filed a motion to deduct Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's salary by a month.

He said the motion was filed because of Najib's failure to overcome issues since he took office in April 2009.

"The Prime Minister's monthly salary is RM22,826.65. This should be deducted because of his unsatisfactory performance," he said in a Press conference at the Parliament lobby yesterday.

Tian Chua said Najib had failed to resolve problems such as economic administrative issues, money wastage and fitnah (defamation) politics.

Tian Chua said he submitted the motion on Oct 27 under Standing Order 66(9).

"This is like a motion of no-confidence in the Prime Minister’s leadership and administration. This is the first time such a motion has been filed," he said.

The motion is expected to be discussed after the questionand-answer session at 11.30am tomorrow before the Supply Bill 2012 committee stage debate.

HUMAN Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam remained defiant in the face of the Malaysian Trades Union Congress' (MTUC) threat of a general election backlash if the ministry presses ahead with its plan to amend the Employment Act. He said the ministry was in contact with grassroots leaders and was adamant there would be no such backlash in the coming elections.

MTUC general-secretary Abdul Halim Mansor warned recently the issue would be brought up during the elections if the deadlock over labour law changes remained unresolved.

Dr Subramaniam said the government was not at fault and that the amendments were requested by the National Plantation Workers Union because of alleged exploitation of their members.

"No, there will be no backlash during the general election. We didn't do anything wrong. What we've done is for the welfare of workers. A lot of trade unions understand this," he told a Press conference yesterday.

their workers."

He said the ministry met more than 900 union leaders and employers over the matter.

"The intention is to protect workers from atrocities committed on them by contractors and how we want to protect them. That is the reason behind it although this has been interpreted differently and twisted differently

by MTUC," he said.

Dr Subramanian also blamed Pakatan Rakyat (PR) for politicising the issue.

"It is sad to say that to some extent, the issue has been politicised and gone beyond the realms of union politics to the realms of politics. That is unfortunate but that is their right," he said.

PR leaders pledged their support for MTUC's protest against the labour law changes and promised to revoke the amendments if voted into power.

The MTUC believes the amendments to the Employment Act 1955 will erode the rights of workers, including those holding permanent jobs.

It says employees will not have job security.

THE Malaysian National Association of Employment (Pikap) has received numerous requests from the public following Indonesia's decision to resume sending domestic maids to Malaysia from Dec 1.

Its president, Datuk Raja Zulkepley Dahalan (pic), said many people had tried to make bookings for maids through the association's 75 registered agencies.

"But without biodata to choose from, we can't simply allow people to make bookings, accept their p ay ments and process applications," he said.

"Only after Dec 1, when the supply of maids from Indonesia resumes, will our agencies be able to help."

Raja Zulkepley said the filtering process on applications would be strict to ensure only eligible employers would be entertained.

"Our agencies will go through employers' financial and socioeconomic backgrounds, their history with previous maids, their responsibilities and the like," he said.

"With this, we can avoid incidences of sexual abuse, maids not receiving monthly salaries, and other problems.

"It is also compulsory for

employers to consult us if they are terminating or sending their maids back. We will investigate the causes."

He said the association was expecting to supply 6,000 to 7,000 maids a month next year.

"The process of hiring a maid would take at least three months. Employees will have to undergo several procedures, including training sessions, medical check-ups and obtaining work permits," he said.

"We advise the public to apply through registered agencies to avoid being cheated."

The association also welcomed the idea of stopping direct recruitment.

"Of course, the public prefers direct hiring because it is cheaper than hiring from agencies.

But if incidents happen, such as maids being abused, no one can be fully responsible.

"If hiring is made through agencies, at least Pikap can be held responsible for the maids' safety and security."

Malaysian Maid Employers' Association (Mama) president Engku Ahmad Fauzi Engku Muhsein also agreed direct recruitment was "dangerous".

"Potential employers should respect the law and the memorandum signed between the two countries. I advise the public to go through registered agencies for maid applications," he said.

Cooperation meeting held in Kuala Lumpur last month, Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa raised his concern over the direct hiring of domestic workers as it contravened Indonesian law on placement and protection of its workers overseas.

In June 2009, Indonesia imposed a freeze on the supply of maids to Malaysia following cases of abuse by employers and the lack of benefits, including a minimum monthly wage and a weekly

rest day.

L ast month, L abour Department director-general Datuk Sheikh Yahya Sheikh Mohamed said the Indonesian government must first lift its moratorium on sending maids to Malaysia before Malaysia would drop direct recruitment.

The moratorium, imposed in 2009, came to an end last month when Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono agreed to lift it when he met Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak during the annual consultations in Mataram, Indonesia.

Censuring Selangor executive council member Teresa Kok for commenting on the issue, Dr Ng told her to "do your homework first before you open your mouth".

She was responding to the statement by Kok, who is also Seputeh MP, that open tenders could minimise the cost of advertising for the ministry.

"Teresa Kok does not understand the term 'direct booking'. She better go and do her homework on what is direct booking," Dr Ng told reporters after launching the Accor's

Destination Malaysia website here yesterday.

"In direct booking, the advertisers are firmly set. They don't negotiate prices.

"So, my advice to Teresa Kok is, do your homework before you open your mouth."

Kok had claimed the ministry mismanaged the government process and public funds by choosing to engage in direct bookings, instead of using the open tender process, for its paid advertisement contacts.

She was referring to the 2010 Auditor-General's Report which stated that 72 per cent of the advertisement contracts secured by the ministry were through direct negotiations with various providers, rather than by open tender.

Dr Ng said it was typical of Kok to try and find issues where there were none.

"But this time, she has shown her lack of knowledge and ignorance."

City Hall gets ready for possible floods CITY HALL has set up a Disaster Relief Committee to prepare for possible floods.

Its deputy director-general, Datuk Mohd Amin Nordin Abdul Aziz, said the committee is made up of members from the Royal Ma laysian Police, Civi l Defence Department, Social Welfare Department, Tenaga Nasional Berhad, Malaysian Red Crescent Society and Alam Flora Sdn Bhd. "The committee's operations room, which will be operating this month, is supervised by our Enforcement Department in Jalan Tun Razak. They will also conduct operations to

help flood victims," he told Bernama yesterday.

Mohd Amin expressed confidence the city would not be inundated by major floods such as those in Thailand, Myanmar and Cambodia and said the council had made thorough preparations, including lining-up a 40-member rescue squad, 40-member traffic squad and 48-member emergency squad.

"Our rescue squad has gone for training courses in Singapore and the Netherlands and for paramedical courses in Canada," he said.

fic squad would monitor the situation from time to time while the emergency squad would be responsible for clearing fallen trees and cleaning work.

Eighty motor-vehicles, including boats and lorries, 14 council halls and 21 schools which could accommodate about 12,000 people, have been prepared for emergencies.

He said the council would also put up flood warning signboards in several locations, including Kampung Baru, Jalan Tun Razak, Jalan Masjid India, Jalan Dang Wangi and Dataran Merdeka.

Miti visit to companies hit by floods INTERNATIONAL Trade and Industry Ministry officials will visit flood-hit Malaysian companies in Thailand within the next month, the minister, Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed, said yesterday. He said while the government sympathised with Malaysian investors who had incurred huge losses in the floods, it urged companies in Malaysia to assist their Malaysian counterparts to continue doing business there.

"We have huge investments in Thailand, particularly in the auto component and banking sectors. PayPal opens centre in Malaysia PAYPAL, the US-based e-commerce business, officially opened its new global operations centre in Malaysia — its first in Southeast Asia — yesterday. The facility provides service and support in English to customers across Asia and provides an additional risk and financial services operations for PayPal's global business.

Further Asian language support would be added in the near future. PayPal plans to hire up to 500 local employees by the end of 2013, with 200 staff already on-site. Its minister, Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, said the department now has 6,381 staff, mostly handling 200 cases each.

"Compared to the ratio of 1:35 in developed countries like Australia, our welfare staff are indeed shouldering a heavy workload. The situation becomes even more critical when natural disasters like floods, landslides and fire incidents occur," she said in reply to a question from Fong Po Kuan (DAP-Batu Gajah) when winding up the debate on the Supply Bill 2012 for her ministry in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.

Final push by traders Committee asks PM to intervene over proposed line for Golden Triangle

“The PM is of course a busy man. We will give him some time but we hope in the interim,

MRT Corp suspends their idea of maintaining whatever they want to do at the moment, especially over the acquiring of shops as well as land between these two areas,” he said after handing over the memorandum to a representative from the PM’s office.

Yong said no deadline was set in the memorandum as it was

not too late to reconsider the current MRT’s Sungai BulohKajang line.

"We don’t think it is too late for the PM to instruct (the MRT Corp) to go back to the drawing board,” he said.

However, if the memorandum was rejected, Yong said the traders would keep pressuring the government through Parliament.

“If the government refuses

accepting the memo, we will meet each of the MPs. After all, they are elected by the people and should be working for the people."

“We will also hold continous protests and functions to show our solidarity,” he said.

MRT Corp previously reiterated it would not realign its route despite objections by traders in Jalan Sultan and Jalan Bukit Bintang.

Baggage handling system 90 per cent complete

THE baggage handling system project from KL International Airport (KLIA) to KL Sentral in Kuala Lumpur is 90 per cent completed but has yet to be operational because of problems over insurance and

additional costs.

Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairman Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid said Express Rail Link (ERL), International Air Transport Association (IATA), Malaysia Airport Berhad (MAB)

and Malaysia Airlines (MAS) would meet soon to find solutions to the problems.

The decision on the project, which would enable international passengers arriving in KLIA to collect their baggage at

KL Sentral, was expected to be finalised by the first quarter of next year, he said after leading PAC members to the project site at KLIA yesterday.

"Right now, the system is only usable if baggages were to be

sent from KL Sentral to KLIA, London or any other country.

However, baggages arriving at KLIA from overseas cannot be sent directly to KL Sentral yet because it will involve additional costs for passengers," he said.

Immediate exit for illegals

THE government has decided the amnesty and legalisation process under the "6P Programme" for illegal immigrant workers wishing to return to their countries of origin will be carried out simultaneously so they can leave immediately.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said the amnesty process involved two categories — those who took part in the registration process and wished to leave the country immediately, and illegal immigrants who surrendered voluntarily.

"Under this process, illegal immigrants could directly deal with the Immigration Department to obtain the E xit Insp e c t ion Memo without action being taken against them," he said in a statement yesterday.

As of Monday, 25,561 illegal immigrants were given amnesty and left this country under the programme, which comprised registration, legalisation, amnesty, supervision, enforcement and deportation.

Hishammuddin said the five countries that registered the most number of illegal immigrants who gained

amnesty and left the country were Indonesia with 15,901 immigrants, followed

by India (2,501), Nepal (1,048), Myanmar (1,040) and Vietnam (930).

"The illegal immigrants who were given amnesty were screened and found free of criminal activities and allowed to return home with all expenses borne by the immigrants themselves," he said.

"So far, the government has not come out with any allocation to finance the cost including food and temporary lodging."

He said under the 6P Programme, the government succeeded in saving almost RM3.3 billion in terms of gross expenditure to register 1,303,126 illegal immigrants which ended on Aug 31.

At the same time, the government managed to increase collection from fees charged for the levy, pass and visa imposed on foreign workers who were given amnesty.

As of Oct 30, 27,514 illegal immigrants were given amnesty under the programme involving 2,208 employers throughout the country.

NINE Myanmar factor y workers alleged to have been wrongfully detained by the Immigration Department last month were found possessing expired working permits.

Immigration Department director-general Datuk Alias Ahmad said the nine detained in Section 6, Kota Damansara on Oct 4 overstayed in the country since July 22. Their employer did not renew their work permits.

"The workers are expected to be charged in court on Nov 14 for unlawful entry or presence in the country," he said.

The nine are being held at the Sungai Buloh Immigration detention centre.

Asked if enforcement action will be taken against their employer, Alias said the department was trying to identify them.

He said as the workers were detained at their residence, the department would have to check for details of the employer and the outsourcing company that recruited them.

"We can take action against the employer and the outsourcing company if they committed an offence," he said.

Alias said if the employer committed an offence, the department could propose to the Home Ministry to terminate the licence or postpone the license renewal of the outsourcing company.

O n M o n d a y, B u r m a Campaign Malaysia claimed the workers' passports were held by their employer and the outsourcing company cheated the workers by failing to prepare their working permits and visa documents since their arrival in June.

The NGO's director,Tun Tun, said the workers paid US850 (RM2,604) each to come to Malaysia to work and they were made to believe their documents would be ready on their arrival.

He claimed the outsourcing company shortchanged the workers as their documents were still not prepared when they arrived and had later evaded the NGO group when they tried to ask about the status of the documents.

Guard gets 14 months for threatening court interpreters FOR threatening two court interpreters, a security guard was sentenced to 14 months jail by the magistrate's court yesterday.

Magistrate Zaki Asyraf Zubir ordered R. Muniandy, 33, to

Muniandy pleaded guilty to both charges.

Possibility not ruled out as cops probe fatal shooting and robbery POLICE have not ruled out the possibility of an inside job in the fatal shooting and robbery outside the University Malaya Medical Centre on Monday.

5 minutes to grab RM25k from bank IN a matter of just five minutes, a gunman managed to escape with RM25,000 from a bank in Taman Connaught here yesterday.

Wearing a full-faced helmet, the robber walked calmly into the CIMB Bank branch in Jalan Sarjana, jumped over the counter and forced the clerk to fill up a bag with cash while pointing a gun to her head.

This happened at 3.45pm, in the presence of customers, a security guard and the bank staff.

Ex-student denies counterfeit charge A GUINEAN pleaded not guilty in the Selayang magistrate's court yesterday to a charge of possessing 700 pieces of counterfeit money three weeks ago.

Nabe Salou, 25, a former International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) student, was alleged to have in his possession the counterfeit notes with a face value of €100 (RM427) each in a room at the university at 3.40pm on Oct 13.

He can be jailed up to 10 years if convicted under Section 489 of the Penal Code.

Insight into sightless tech TalksPE software gives the blind ability to use phones through voice command

AS he skillfully scrolls down the blank screen of his iPhone, it could be heard listing applications.

"I'm now checking my emailâ&#x20AC;Ś and I have three messages," said Yam Tong Woo. "Oh! Is the screen black? Can you not see anything?" asked the 57-year-old blind man from Sungai Buloh.

"Sorry, I normally leave it blank for privacy," he apologised with a laugh. He then brought the screen to life with a tap of his fingers and continued his demo.

Yam, blind since January 2008 because of a bacterial infection, is an avid blogger and golfer.

He was the organising chairman at the ICT Day & Job Fair 2011 held at the Malaysian Association for the Blind (MAB) in Jalan Tebing yesterday.

One of the most popular booths at the fair was run by Smartphone Mobility Enterprise executive director Allan Wong.

The 34-year-old blind man from Kuala Lumpur demonstrated how he could use a Nokia N8 phone with a touchscreen to check his calendar or dial a number.

The phone had been installed with TalksPE, a software that would read out the text on his

During the opening ceremony officiated by Higher Education Minister's political secretary Mohammad Khairi A. Malik, 10 employers were honoured with plaques for their efforts in providing employment opportunities for the blind.

'Mystery' men at work

Unannounced roadworks in a Bkt Bandaraya locality turn out to be cabling, water pipe repairs RESIDENTS are in the dark over recent works along Jalan Medang Serai, Bukit Bandaraya, Bangsar, as there is no information on them in the first place.

They are alarmed by the length of the work as the unknown contractors have even placed mobile living quarters for the workers, replete with water tanks.

Stray golf ball claim snag SHEIK MOHD AMIZUL is getting impatient with Kuala Lumpur Golf Country Club for taking more than four months to prepare an insurance claim for a freak accident on his car.

"On June 3, I attended a Telekom Malaysia's (TM) corporate golf tournament at the club for customers and staff," said the 41-year-old sales manager from Rawang.

After the event, the employee of a TM subsidiary company went up to the open parking lot to get his car and was shocked to find three golf balls had apparently smashed his Hyundai Starex's back windows.

Meanwhile, I had to fix the car using my credit account,

Plane carrying 230 lands on belly A BOEING 767 with 220 passengers on board yesterday made an emergency landing on its belly at Warsaw international airport after its landing gear failed, an airline spokesman said.

Construction worker Ricky Pempengco, 39, was stabbed repeatedly late on Monday after an altercation with another drinker in a street in an agricultural town south of Manila, police said.

"They bumped into each other and from there, they got into a fight," said local police chief Senior Superintendent Gilbert Cruz.

Police are still searching for the suspect in the killing, he added.

Yoga aids chronic back pain Workout programme derived from ancient India helps the body become more flexible PEOPLE who took yoga classes for chronic lower back pain experienced more lifestyle improvements and better overall health than those who sought a doctor's advice, said a study published on Monday.

The research in the journal the Annals of Internal Medicine which was led by scientists at the University of York, included more than 300 people and was described as the largest of its kind to date in the United Kingdom.

Researchers derived their study samples from a group of people who were already seeing a doctor for chronic or recurrent back pain. They assigned 156 of them to yoga classes and left 157 to the care of their physicians.

After three months, the yoga group reported they "were able to undertake 30 per cent more activities compared with those in the usual care group," said the study.

The main advantage appeared to be having more confidence to perform daily tasks such as "walking more quickly, getting dressed without help or standing up

for longer periods of time", and not necessarily pain relief, it said.

Those taking yoga reported slightly less pain compared to the usual care group, but the difference was of "marginal statistical significance".

The data added to a series of studies on how yoga may improve health.

A study published earlier this month in the US journal Archives of Internal Medicine found yoga and stretching alleviated back pain more than reading a self-help manual.

Other studies out this year have suggested yoga can lower stress and improve quality of life among breast cancer patients, as well as cut irregular heartbeat episodes in half among cardiac patients.

The study authors said the findings are important because 80 per cent of people in the UK suffer from back pain at some point in their lives, with few effective treatments.

"Back pain is an extremely common and costly condition.

The demand for the blood protein is about 500 tons per year worldwide, and China has faced worrying shortages in the past.

The rice method was devised by scientists at Wuhan University in China and colleagues from the National Research Council of

Canada and the Center for Functional Genomics at the University of Albany, New York.

First, they genetically engineered rice seeds to produce high levels of HSA. Then, they worked out a way to purify the protein from the seeds, gathering about 2.75 grammes of the protein per kilogramme of rice.

When they tested the ricemade protein in rats with liver cirrhosis, a common condition for which the human equivalent is often used, they found it produced similar outcomes to treatment with HSA. "Our results suggest that a rice seed bioreactor produces cost-effective recombinant HSA that is safe and can help to satisfy an increasing worldwide demand for human serum albumin," said the study.

Much has been written about how to prevent a heart attack, also called myocardial infarction or MI, but for its survivors and more so for those who come off a sudden heart failure, cardiac arrest, or severe heart damage, how do they cope after that with cardiovascular (CV) disease, the world’s number one killer?

Medication and treatment apart, taking that first step to recognise and accept that what you have just gone through was a life-changing event, will help if not speed up your road to recovery.

To ensure that you continue to enjoy a healthy and meaningful life with your family and friends, you need to take certain steps — sacrifices included — to change your lifestyle.

Dealing with the fears of losing your job to another with fewer perceived health risks, and recognising the impact that MI has on your spousal relationship and sex life are some things that you cannot ignore – these won’t go away.

Indeed, how soon you can resume your active lifestyle and get back to work will depend on the measures you take to maintain this new lifestyle, which entails more than just adopting a new diet programme and increasing physical activity.

On the other extreme are those who immediately return to their old lifestyles and stressful work habits after being discharged from the hospital for their heart condition. Sadly, these people are either unaware of, or choose to ignore, that fact that they need to adjust their lifestyle.

Survivors of ACS needs to be mindful that this is a chronic and progressive disease, but can be managed. It is a matter of taking steps to prevent another heart attack and how to reduce immediate and long-term risks.

To grasp all these newfound realities and face the true assessment of your health condition is one thing. Steeling yourself to apply a preventive therapy and follow it through is another.

It’s a natural reaction to feel isolated and alone, facing all these new situations and harsh realities. It’s important that the chain of caregivers understand the proper care, assessment and treatment that a heart attack survivor needs to reduce the risk of a subsequent cardiac event.

Once the patient acknowledges and understands that it is a long-term collaborative effort across the chain, these shared responsibilities of managing life after a heart attack will seem less burdensome.

Most important of all, heart attack patients need to realise that the key to successfully navigate their way to a productive life after a heart attack lies very much with themselves.

Not an ideal situation Survey results have shown that an increasing number of lives have been lost over time after patients leave the hospital without realising that the management of this acute coronary syndrome (ACS) — an umbrella term for those having heart attacks in progress or the threat of a heart attack that results from reduced blood flow to the heart muscle — needs more attention.*,**

The cycle of treatment While doctors will offer professional advice on the appropriate tests and medications, the patient must be aware of warning signs and symptoms of a subsequent heart attack and the actions to take if it happens.

Understandably, this might be too overwhelming an experience for some once they leave the security of a hospital environment after a heart attack.

CORRECTIVE SURGERY: Surgeons from the French NGO Chaine de l'Espoir (Chain of Hope) and the Abidjan Institute of Cardiology perform heart surgery on one of the 20 children suffering from cardiac problems This is where family support is crucial in assisting the patient with lifestyle changes and cardiac rehabilitation programmes, as proposed or advised by the therapist and doctor.

The patient’s family members can learn basic techniques of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or CPR. Helping someone suffering from a heart attack in the first precious minutes can be a matter of life and death.

Patients and caregivers givers alike need to know about certain important numbers to monitor when it concerns heart health; for example, cholesterol levels (HDL and LDL); blood glucose and blood pressure. Managing these risk factors go a long way to help reduce the recurrence of CV events caused by blood clots.

In treating ACS patients, depending on the severity of their condition, doctors can prescribe medicines or recommend i n v a s i v e procedure. One such invasive procedure is percutaneous c o r o n a r y intervention (PCI), in which blocked arteries are opened with a stent. PCI is also known as angioplasty.

Another invasive procedure is coronary a r t e r y bypass graft, or CABG, in

which the affected (usually blocked) artery in the heart is bypassed with a vein to allow blood to flow to the heart.

Besides cardiothoracic surgeons, a cardiologist’s interventional role and attentive help to assist the patient in dealing with long post-operative recovery, scars and pain are also key in contributing to the patient’s management of heart disease.

In terms of medication, there are antiplatelet agents that can prevent platelets in the blood from sticking together to form blood clots. These have been prescribed in addition to, or in place of, other drugs (such as aspirin), which have been used at low doses to help prevent heart attacks, strokes and blood clot formation, or given immediately after a heart attack to reduce the risk of another heart attack or the death of cardiac tissue.

Taken with the doctor’s advice, and coupled with adjustments to lifestyle habits, some antiplatelets can effectively improve survival rates for ACS patients. The holistic care extended by the doctors, prescribers, therapists as well as strong support from the patient’s family, friends, colleagues and communitybased caregivers, have also helped to contribute to greater efficiency in the treatment approach and better quality of the patient’s life.

Currently busy preparing for her upcoming live music performance, which will be held in Hong Kong in November, Koon hopes that one day she will have the opportunity to perform at the prestigious Hong Kong Coliseum, an indoor multipurpose arena. Shrinking talent pool WET DREAMS: SRJK (C) Chan Wa's pool has been deemed closed to schoolchildren

School frustrated as facility underused IMAGINE having a swimming pool complete with a licensed instructor in your backyard.

After swimming for more than a decade, you are suddenly told that you cannot use the pool by the powers that be.

That is the predicament faced by SRJK (C) Chan Wa of Seremban, who will have to ditch their almost twodecade tradition of moulding swimmers for the State, no thanks to a directive by the Negri Sembilan Education Department.

A swimming pool in a primary school is a rare commodity in this country. The pool was built in 1988 through donations from well-wishers. With the guidance of a licensed swimming instructor, Chan Wa has been Negri Sembilan's overall primary school champion for the past 16 years and even produced Olympic swimmer Siow Yi Ting.

The school introduced swimming to all of its students — from Standard 1 to Standard 6 — as part of its comprehensive physical and health education (PHE). Children are taught the basics — backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle.

Chan Wa informed the State education department verbally of its activity since the pool was completed and it has never been an issue.

Recently, the new headmaster decided to obtain a written approval from the department only to be told that such an activity is not part of the edu-

cation syllabus. As such, the school will have to halt their swimming activities.

The letter by the State education department, stated: "The use of the swimming pool is only allowed during the Physical Education lesson for Standard 1 students which involves movement skills in basic aquatics. However, the teacher teaching has to have a basic swimming license."

Swimming classes have stopped since and this has irked many parties. This has also resulted in the cancellation of the annual swimming championship.

Former headmaster Ong Eng Hang, who served the school from 1980 to 1992, and oversaw the construction of the pool, is disappointed by the decision of the State education department.

"Our Education Minister (Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin) launched the 1Student 1Sport programme early this year. I feel the school is not responding to this programme as the swimming pool is not being fully utilised," said Eng Hang.

"I hope the State education department will allow the school to conduct swimming

lessons for all classes, from Standard 1 to 6."

Perhaps the education department has the safety of the students in mind. However, haven't we heard of students dying on the field? Should that be a reason to stop football or other field related activities?

The school has played a big role in developing swimming in Negri Sembilan — why spoil a working formula?

It is also quite common to see Swimming Clubs or Societies in schools, so why can't the students swim during school hours?

And just because swimming is not part of the ministry's syllabus, we should just do away with the activity altogether?

Plan for the future Indian GP to 'break even in four years'

INDIAN Grand Prix organisers say they hope to break even within four years and are talking to MotoGP and other race series in a bid to make up for their limited profits from Formula 1.

The private Jaypee infrastructure group revealed the plans as other Grand Prix organisers struggle, including South Korea which is trying to renegotiate its F1 contract just a year after its debut.

Jaypee spent US$200 million (RM624.1m) building the Buddh International Circuit and another US$200 million on their F1 licence fee, spokesman Askari Zaidi said.

He said the F1 profits were confined largely to ticket sales as revenues from sponsorship and broadcast rights were controlled by the sport.

But the company will also profit from building and selling houses and commercial space on a large new development around the track, known as Jaypee Greens Sports City.

"In F1 there's not much

scope to make money barring the sale of tickets but there are other races which we're planning to hold, like MotoGP, and some other race organisations have contacted us," Zaidi said.

"So whatever we spend we hope to recover in four years."

Zaidi said Jaypee's agreement with the government was to fill 35 per cent of the 2,500-acre site near New Delhi with sports facilities including a 100,000-seat cricket stadium, a golf course and a shooting range.

"The rest we can develop and sell as commercial space or houses. That's how we intend to recover the money," he said.

Several Grand Prix organisers have wrestled with the dilemma of F1, which is known to boost prestige but at a high cost.

China and Australia are among those who have baulked at the outlay while Singapore is yet to sign a new contract, and

France and Turkey have both dropped off the F1 calendar.

Last week, F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone rejected South Korea's request for a cheaper contract, saying there were "lots of things in life you can't afford and you don't have to have them".

But Vicky Chandhok, president of the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs in India (FMSCI), said Jaypee would not have the same problem.

"The organisers and promoters have taken it as an investment, they're using it as their ground to globalise their image," Chandhok said.

"They're a very large infrastructure company, they build apartments, they build hydropower, they build golf courses.

"They will now look on the back of this to be able to sell their apartments and golf club memberships better. They're using it as a marketing tool.

So the event loss is of no consequence.

Chandhok, who was a key figure behind the project, said other Grands Prix had run into trouble because they were publicly funded.

ROGER FEDERER (pic) gave his hometown fans exactly what they were seeking as the four-time champion moved into the second round of the ATP Swiss Indoors yesterday with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 defeat of Potito Starace.

by Euro giants VINCENT KOMPANY (pic) has emerged as a target for European powerhouses Real Madrid and AC Milan. Real boss Jose Mourinho is hoping to prise the Manchester City skipper away from Etihad Stadium with a £20 million bid next summer as he seeks to shore up his backline.

Madrid scouts have been watching the Belgian defender, sent-off against Wolves on Saturday, in recent weeks as they look for a long term replacement for Ricardo Carvalho, who is 33.

Serie A giants Milan are also keen on Kompany, 25, but might struggle to raise the transfer fee.

Fan attacks player on pitch A DRUG-FUELLED football hooligan has been charged after running onto the pitch and attacking Steaua Bucharest defender George Galamaz, breaking his right cheekbone.

The attack sparked violent clashes and the Romanian league match between Steaua and Petrolul Ploiesti at the Ilie Oana Stadium was abandoned.

Prosecutors said that the fan, Dragos Petrut Enache, used a hard object to hit Galamaz and that he was high on drugs when he committed the attack on Sunday. Enache has been charged with disturbing public order and committing violence.

Subotic also comes highly recommended by his countryman Nemanja Vidic, and has previously revealed his desire to ply his trade in England.

No magic involved

I'm not the Wizard of Oz, says Ranieri INTER MILAN coach Claudio Ranieri (pic) has pleaded for patience saying he is not a magician and cannot wave a magic wand to turn around the club's fortunes.

The Milanese giants have had a disastrous start to the Serie A season, losing five of their opening nine matches, winning only two, earning just eight points and sitting one place and one point above the relegation zone.

Any faint hopes they may have had of mounting a title challenge seemed to die on Saturday when they lost 2-1 at home to Juventus to drop to 11 points behind the league leaders.

But Ranieri believes kneejerk reactions won't solve their problems and says it's too early to write off the players who 18 months ago won an unprecedented treble.

"We have to wait until the end of the season but when I see them train they don't look worn out," said Ranieri.

"Give me time and faith and you'll see that I'm right. This team still has a lot to give.

"When things aren't going well you need to know how to

stay calm and evaluate everything.

"There are many great players here, let me analyse them. We have people monitoring the football world.

"When the moment comes they will tell me what they've seen that could improve us.

"I expected difficulties and when I came here I was ready to overcome them with the help of the team.

"I try to solve problems by always training harder and I expect us to get through this negative period.

"Those who used to score goals will score some more.

We need to wait and be strong mentally and physically in this difficult moment.

"I'm not the Wizard of Oz, I expected to face difficulties and I want to overcome them with the team. We're on the right path."

Things have not been so bad in the Champions League despite suffering a shock home defeat to minnows Trabzonspor in their opening game.

Since then they have won away to both CSKA Moscow and Lille, putting the Nerazzurri top of Group B. And ahead of their clash with the French champions at the San Siro tomorrow (2.45am), Ranieri says his team should not forget who they are.

"We're a big team, we're going through a unique moment in our history but we're still a big team," he said.

"We have the maximum respect for Lille who haven't lost away from home in a long time so they're pretty good.

"They beat AC Milan in Milan so we respect them but we'll try to win to secure qualification. — AFP

Mancini will forgive Tevez if he says sorry

MANCHESTER CITY manager Roberto Mancini says he will be "the first to forgive" striker Carlos Tevez if the Argentine apologises for refusing to warm-up during the Champions League clash against Bayern Munich.

Tevez was suspended for two weeks as the club made an inquiry that determined he was guilty of several breaches of contract, incurring a fine worth four weeks' of pay, though this has since been halved.

"Everything depends on Carlos. If he apologises to the squad and to me then everything will be as before. If he doesn't then Tevez has a value that everyone knows and something will happen in January," Mancini told Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.

"He is totally unprepared and being badly advised. I don't

want it to be like this and I would be the first to forgive him."

Reacting to speculation that Tevez might be heading to Serie A outfit Napoli in a straight swap for Ezequiel Lavezzi, he told the newspaper, "No one from City will be given away."

Meanwhile, Kolo Toure will discover his club punishment for failing a drug test within seven days.

The Ivorian faced a disciplinary hearing yesterday after being charged with gross misconduct in the summer over his positive test for a banned substance which was present in one of his wife's water tablets.

Toure received a six-month FA ban for failing the test, which took place in February, and returned to action last month.

Professional Footballers

Association (PFA) chief Gordon Taylor accompanied Toure to the hearing but, unlike the Carlos Tevez case, he would be powerless to prevent City imposing a fine of six weeks' wages, as that is the maximum agreed with the PFA for a gross misconduct charge.

Taylor later criticised City's decision to hold a disciplinary hearing.

"It just seems strange that after being welcomed back to the club, reinstated as captain for Carling Cup matches, that someone has come up with this hearing," he told the Manchester Evening News.

NEWCASTLE'S deadly striker Demba Ba was delighted to silence his Stoke critics with a hattrick as the Magpies won 3-1 at Britannia Stadium yesterday.

Ba would have joined the Potters in January had he not failed a medical, leaving Newcastle to sign him over the summer following a successful spell at West Ham during the second-half of last season.

He has made a superb start to his Newcastle career and continued that fine form with a treble.

With this win, the Magpies are now third in the standings and unbeaten all season, while Ba has scored eight goals in five games.

A section of the Stoke support made their feelings of displeasure known towards Ba, but he shrugged off the negative reaction.

"If they want to boo they should boo their board," Ba told Sky Sports. "I am very happy to score a hattrick here because it is a place you come and struggle.

"It's important when you have strikers who can run and

defend. Today we did our best but the team at the back were strong."

Ba refused to look too far ahead despite Newcastle's position in the table. "We are just in the first 10 games so it's a long way to go," he said.

Meanwhile, Newcastle boss Alan Pardew praised his team for their all around display.

Stoke were expected to

provide a stern test to the Magpies' hopes of maintaining their blistering start to the campaign, a test they passed with flying colours.

Newcastle were in control before half-time thanks to Ba's double. Jon Walters pulled a goal back from the penalty spot in the secondhalf with Ba's hattrick settling the affair.

The likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United have all failed to win at Stoke this season and Pardew says it was quite an achievement for his side to claim all three points.

"We spoke before the game that on a pitch like this you're going to get a lot of balls in your box and you have to defend them and we did as

a team tonight, tremendous spirit," said Pardew.

"I thought both penalties were a bit soft, but when it keeps going in there it's a tough decision for the referee. Everyone is pushing and barging.

"I was a little bit disappointed in the second-half that we didn't control the game in the way that we should have. But you know the resilience of the team showed another side to us. We don't get 22 points without having different sides to our game.

"No one's won here. All the big teams have come and no one has won. It goes to show how good they are at what they do. Stoke had a strong wind behind them in the second-half which helped them."

Pardew said Ba had nothing to prove as he has been on fire all season.

"Demba played like that all year. He's been brilliant for us. He's a great player, he doesn't miss a day's training.

I knew of him because of my connections at West Ham and we were confident to bring him here," he said.

Tevez willing to stay in England

MANCHESTER CITY striker Carlos Tevez's (pic) representative Kia Joorabchian claims the Argentine would be willing to stay in the Premier League.

Tevez has long said his main reason for previously wanting to leave Manchester City was that his family could not settle in England.

"His family are now living in England, so he's quite happy and settled... he'd be happy to move to another Premier

League club," Joorabchian told Daily Mirror.

However, off the back of his latest row with the club which has seen him exiled to the reserves, Joorabchian insists a move within the Premier League is a valid option.

Tevez was last week charged and fined by City, after an internal investigation, following their Champions league clash with Bayern Munich in September.

City manager Roberto Mancini said Tevez refused to come off the bench, but this was later dropped and he was charged with failing to carry out duties for not warming up.

City tried to fine Tevez four weeks' wages, but the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) backed the Argentine's stance and this was reduced to two weeks.

And Joorabchian feels the

downgrade in the charges has altered the situation with the player.

"This week, the PFA rejected the claim that he had refused to come on as a substitute," said Joorabchian.

"That has changed everything and clarified what actually happened.

"Carlos was desperate to play. He loves to play the game and always wants to play. Having to sit on the sidelines is tough for him.

"It's not easy for him at the moment, but, in the January transfer window, City will want to get him out either on a permanent basis or on loan.

"We'll have to wait and see what happens."

He also said he would not contemplate a move back to Upton Park despite interest from his former club West Ham "He loves West Ham but that's not going to happen."

In the lion’s den Trip to Lyon holds no more fears for Real

REAL MADRID return to familiar territory tomorrow (2.45am) to face Lyon and they will be looking for a win that will seal their place in the Champions League knockout stages with two games left in Group D. Ever since a mid-September slip that saw them take just one point from two league games — a full-blown crisis for a club as big and as closely scrutinised as Madrid — Jose Mourinho’s side have won eight games in a row in all competitions, scoring an impressive 29 goals in that time.

Such form has seen them go top of La Liga for the first time in a year, and it means they will arrive in France confident of beating Lyon on their own ground for the first time.

The arrival of Mourinho at the helm has already helped the nine-time European champions overcome their Lyon hoodoo, with a 4-1 aggregate win in the last 16 last season being followed by an embarrassingly easy 4-0 win at the Santiago Bernabeu two weeks ago.

Now they are looking to maintain their perfect record in the group stages with a win that would allow Mourinho to rest players in their final games against Dinamo Zagreb and Ajax.

There is the small matter

of a league showdown with Barcelona at home in midDecember, so the prospect of being able to rotate his squad in midweek European games is motivation for Mourinho.

In the meantime, the “Special One” has decisions to make.

Does he drop Mesut Oezil, who has appeared subdued in recent games, and hand a start to in-form Kaka? And who gets the nod in attack between Gonzalo Higuain and Karim Benzema?

The Real-obsessed Madrid media have had so little to worry about in recent weeks that endless amounts of column inches have been devoted to which one of the two strikers should lead the line.

Higuain — who scored the only goal in Saturday’s win at Real Sociedad — believes the club’s fans should simply savour being able to call on both players.

“It is great for everyone that the two of us are here. We get on well and we hug every

time one of us replaces the other. I am happy for Karim because he deserves it. He is a great player and the fans should be delighted to have us,” he said.

Mourinho may opt to start Benzema against his former club and at the venue where he scored in the last 16 of their first-leg last season.

Lyon come into this game buoyed by back-to-back wins against local rivals Saint-Etienne in the last week, first in the League Cup and then in

the league, and are now chasing a result that would boost their chances of reaching the tournament’s knockout stage for a ninth season running.

Injuries to Michel Bastos and Lisandro Lopez have seriously weakened Remi Garde’s options in attack, but Yoann Gourcuff is back to fitness, and Lyon have not lost at home in any competition in over a year.

Their top scorer Bafetimbi Gomis sees no reason to fear the Spanish giants.

“I don’t think the gulf is as wide as it seemed over there (in Madrid) so now it’s up to us to show our pride and belief,” he told Uefa.com.

“Their team hasn’t changed that much, they have world class players and a coach who has a strong personality, and who is a good fit for them.

“Madrid have good individual players up front. They are a great team that have been put together to win the competition.

“We are not exactly seeking revenge because I think they fully deserved their win (two weeks ago).

“I don’t think it was a decisive game, it hasn’t jeopardised our chances of qualifying.

“Now we need to be competitive and try and get at least one point to keep moving towards qualification.”

MANCHESTER UNITED will turn to Rio Ferdinand (pic) to marshal the heart of their defence against Otelul Galati in the absence of suspended Nemanja Vidic, manager Alex Ferguson said on the eve of their Champions League match.

Ferdinand, 32, has found his starting place alongside Vidic increasingly under threat due to injuries and the emergence of young-

sters Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling.

“I explained to Rio that we have two young centre halves coming through and I’m glad to have the four of them and I hope I can keep the four of them for a long time,” the manager said.
