ALL local councils in Selangor may apply for enforcement powers akin to the traffic police soon.

Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) president Datuk Asmawi Kasbi said they were keeping a close watch on Petaling Jaya City Council's (MBPJ) application for its officers to be given similar powers to traffic police in enforcing traffic regulations.

"There were discussions at state levels last year for all councils in Selangor to have the same enforcement powers but it all hinges on the outcome of MBPJ's application," he told The Malay Mail.

He said if the application by the Petaling Jaya City Council is approved, then local councils under Selangor will follow suit.

Asmawi said the Subang Jaya Municipal Council is governed by the same scope of powers as the Petaling Jaya City Council, albeit on a smaller scale.

"Although we are governed by the same Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333), our enforcement powers are limited to the Road Transport Order (Parking Provision) 2007 because we are not a city council.

"We don't have traffic wardens but 100 enforcement officers and six tow trucks. Our enforcement can only issue a compound for motorists who make wrongful parking and fail to pay parking tickets."

“What right has he got to ask me to resign? He is showing disrespect and disdain to the people's choice – a disrespect to Pandan folks!” said Ong in a tirade against Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek. To be fair to Chua, he had only asked Ong to resign from the party, as the Pandan MP had been making “disparaging remarks” against the party's leaders.

Ong is surely going to be dropped as the Pandan candidate for MCA but the former Transport Minister had said he would defend his seat at

any cost.

Ong said the poor turnout by the Youth delegates at the Youth Annual General Assembly (AGM) was also a reflection of the waning support for the party (see accompanying story).

He had gone on Twitter yesterday to needle Youth chief Datuk Wee Ka Siong: “Wow! MCA registered 27,000 new members, but only 30 per cent delegates attended Ka Siong’s Youth AGM. Time for him to cry genuinely.”

“The turnout for MCA Youth AGM is normally around 50 per cent and sometimes it is below.

I am a man who does not want to criticise other people,” said Wee, adding that as the Youth chief and secretary-general then in 2001, Ong should know the figures better.

Wee relented that while attendance could have been better, he was “happy” with the turnout.

“I don’t want to comment but since he has shown his concern for the Youth, I say a big thank you to him."

Wee, however, refused to give the percentage of the attendance during Ong’s tenure.

He also said the turnout at the Youth’s AGM was 49 per cent and not 30 per cent, as claimed

by Ong.

Last year, the Youth AGM was cancelled when only 87 of 1,742 delegates turned up.

Its deputy president, Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, admitted the problems faced by MCA and denied the party was experiencing denial syndrome.

“We are not the one with denial syndrome and we do not try to say that MCA is supported by the young," he told The Malay Mail.

"We know in that in certain areas, the young have a wrong perception of us, so we have to work harder.

We know that we have to change."

Liow explained that MCA is not a party of individuals and stressed the public are waiting for what the party can do in the future.

“This party does not only belong to MCA members but to the Chinese community.

The Chinese community has

been fighting and supporting this MCA since day one.

"It is a really big asset to the Chinese. Thick and thin, it is with Chinese community. Party leaders can come and go.

"So please protect the party and not because of certain individuals you are willing to destroy the party."

Party vice-president and Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen echoed Liow's remarks when asked about the alleged practices of corruption plaguing the party leaders. “(Prime Minister) Datuk Seri Najib Razak has asked us to go forward and must not lag behind. Ong Tee Keat is behind, so we must look forward,” she said.

MCA vice-president Donald Lim said the current party leadership was united and ready to face the coming general election, speculated to be as early as January.

“We know we lost so many seats in 2008, partly because of leadership problems. They select who they wanted as candidates and that was part of our downfall in 2008,” he said.

THE controversial Undilah video can be aired by television stations if the offensive sentiments in the 4.38-minute clip are removed.

Deputy Information, Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Maglin Dennis D'Cruz said the video was done by a private company and it should be allowed to go on air if parts deemed offensive were taken out.

"We do not stop individuals or companies from coming out with such videos.

Although the Undilah video is controversial, it is possible for the video to be aired if the required changes are made to it," D'Cruz told The Malay Mail after launching the Volkswagen Bug-O-Rama 2011 carnival in Subang Jaya yesterday.

Asked which parts of the video were deemed offensive, he said: "I haven't watched the video yet. I only heard about it."

On Friday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the video, by Pete Teo, had not been banned and that it was up to television stations to air the clip.

“There is no ban on the video. I haven't seen it but we don't ban things like that,” Najib said, adding it was important for those involved in the video to continue supporting the government's efforts to develop the nation.

(MCMC) stated the public service announcement clip calling on the public to register as voters could not be aired on television as the Film Censorship Board (LPF) had not approved of it.

The decision drew criticisms from many quarters who described the move as undemocratic.

Information, Communications and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Utama Rais Yatim said the video, featuring local artistes and politicians, was offensive and unsuitable for broadcast as it contained subliminal messages aimed at influencing the audience and may offend certain groups.

He said MCMC pulled the clip off the air as it did not receive LPF approval.

LPF comes under the Home Ministry which will make the final decision on whether to allow the clip to be aired on television.

The video, which stars Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, also features Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong, Deputy Health Minister Datuk Rosnah Abd Rashid Shirlin and Deputy Foreign Minister A. Kohilan Pillay.

It also features Pakatan Rakyat MPs such as Nurul Izzah Anwar, Tony Pua, Khalid Samad and Nik Nazmi

Nik Ahmad and celebrities such as Reshmonu, Namewee, Daphne Iking and Afdlin Shauki as well as badminton ace Datuk Lee Chong Wei and rally driver Karamjit Singh, and corporate figures like former MAS managing director Datuk Tengku Azmil Zahruddin and AirAsia boss Tan Sri Tony Fernandes.

Undilah producer Teo said he was baffled by the MCMC action.

Najib to table motions to repeal two Acts DATUK Seri Najib Razak said the motions to repeal the Restricted Residence Act 1993 and Banishment Act 1959 will be tabled for first reading at the Dewan Rakyat's sitting today, he said yesterday.

The Prime Minister said the move to repeal the acts showed seriousness of the government to bring about a transformation in the interest of the nation's progress.

"Tomorrow, I myself will table for first reading of the motions to repeal the Restricted Residence Act 1993 and Banishment Act 1959, and the second reading will be on Wednesday the following week.

"So with this, the first week of the Dewan's sitting, we will show we are serious about political reforms we promised for the country," he said when opening MCA's 58th annual general assembly here today.

"The principle the government holds to is that we have the right balance between human rights, civil liberties, public order, harmony and security," said Najib.

However, he stressed those who try to upset peace and harmony would be dealt with according to the law.

In his Malaysia Day message on Sept 15, Najib announced the Internal Security Act (ISA) would be abolished after two new acts dealing with national security and terrorism were enacted.

In the same message, he also announced the Banishment Act would be repealed and there would be comprehensive review of the Restricted Residence Act, Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984 and Section 27 of the Police Act 1967.

DAP rejects hudud law DAP will not agree with the implementation of hudud law even if the opposition obtains two-thirds majority in the 13th general election.

Party national chairman Karpal Singh said the constitution was the highest law and as such, state legislations should be aligned with the constitution and any law inconsistent with it would be declared as void.

"DAP would not agree to any amendment to the constitution for the enactment of hudud law, including the proposal by PAS in the

Kelantan and Terengganu state assemblies in 1993 as it was not in line with the constitution," he said.

Karpal was asked to comment on the statement by Kelantan Menteri B esar D atu k Ni k Ab du l A z i z Nik Mat yesterday that the hudud law would only be implemented should the opposition win the coming general election.

He said implementation of hudud would cause people to lose confidence and support for Pakatan Rakyat as not every citizen agreed with PAS's idea. — Bernama

MTUC to proceed with picket against labour laws

THE Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) will proceed with plan to protest the impasse over Putrajaya's revision of new labour laws, despite negotiations with the Human Resources Ministry officials in a last-minute meeting on Saturday.

According to them, changes to the Employment Act 1955, Industrial Relations Act 1967 and the Trade Union Act 1959 will enable employers to indefinitely keep workers on fixed-term contracts.

MTUC deputy president Mohd Jafar Abdul Majid, said the decision was made at a

meeting between trade unions, also last Saturday.

"We will only consider withdrawing if the ministry decides to further discuss the matter with us and make new commitments," he told The Malay Mail.

He said they planned to bring at least 20 members each from 120 of its councils for the hour-long protest.

"We're not expecting any clash with the authorities as we plan to protest peacefully,"

he said.

On Saturday, an online news portal reported the MTUC would write to the ministry, asking for the Bill to be withdrawn completely.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) executive director Shamsuddin Bardan said it was too early for such a protest. He said MTUC should wait to discuss the matter via the National Labour Advisory Council (NLAC).

"However, NLAC has been

inactive for the past couple of years and they have only just re-appointed members in the past two weeks to help address the issue. So in the meantime, MTUC should wait," he said, adding that NLAC's role should be respected.

He said the picket will also place unnecessary pressure on the ministry. "But if MTUC remains unhappy with the issue, they can always go ahead with their next course of action."

Police find gun on man in nightclub

A RAID yesterday morning at a nightclub in Brem Mall Kepong in Taman Batu here yielded an unexpected find for police when one of the patrons was caught with a gun.

the nightclub about 11pm with two women in their 20s, including his girlfriend.

Police are checking on their backgrounds.

During the four-hour raid, 188 patrons were searched and also underwent urine tests.

Caught in the closet Boy, 14, nabbed after girl, also 14, alleges rape on first date

THEY had known each other for two months and their romance blossomed via telephone calls.

However, the day she met her secret lover for the first time, she was raped.

This was the claim made by a 14-year-old girl, who was allegedly molested and raped by her lover, also 14, at a fruit orchard in Kampung Sungai Kamin in Ulu Yam Baharu, Selangor.

The incident occurred on Friday when her lover, a school dropout, contacted her and expressed his desire for them to meet for a date at the fruit orchard.

Excited, the girl snuck out of her house in Ulu Yam and went to the orchard about 9.30pm.

What started out as an innocent conversation later turned ugly when the boy allegedly began molesting the girl, then forced himself on her.

After she was raped, the girl, in tears, ran home and informed her parents about the incident.

They immediately lodged a report at the Ulu Yam Baharu police station.

Supt Norel Azmi Yahya Affendi, who confirmed the report, said police have arrested the teenage suspect to facilitate investigations.

He said the police team who went to the boy's house in Ulu Yam Baharu, were unable to find him when they searced the house.

It was after the team conducted a second sweep that they

found the boy squatting inside a closet in his room.

Norel Azmi said the victim has been warded at Selayang Hospital for further checks.

“Initial investigations and hospital examination revealed the victim was molested and raped."

The case is being investigated under Section 376 of the Penal Code for rape.

Gunshot victim still in critical condition

FIVE days after after being shot at 12 times, a car repossessor is still battling for his life.

P. Subramaniam, 43, who was shot at last Wednesday while having a drink at a roadside stall in Jalan Metro Prima 2, Kepong, is warded at the intensive care unit in Hospital Selayang, and is still in crital condition.

Sentul police chief ACP Zakaria Pagan said yesterday no statement had been recorded from the victim.

"We are unable to record his statement as he is still fighting for his life. We believe it was a revenge attack from a rival gang," he said.

Zakaria said the victim is the owner of a car repossession agency and his office is located near the food stall where he was shot.

Police have so far failed to retrieve any CCTV images of the suspects on a blue Yamaha RXZ. “So far, we have not found any CCTV images from nearby

lots but we are still inspecting several premises in the area," Zakaria said.

Of the 12 shots fired, only two had hit the victim in his waist and right hand. Two other customers, a woman in her 20s who was passing by, and a man in his 40s sitting near Subramaniam's table, also sustained minor injuries when some of the bullets grazed their legs. Both were advised to seek treatment at the nearest clinic.

According to witnesses, a motorcycle had stopped at the food stall where Subramaniam was sitting alone. The pillion rider then fired 12 shots at him during the 5.40pm incident.

Both, the gunman and his accomplice were wearing fullface helmets.

A passer-by took Subramaniam to the hospital.

Police also believe the gunman used a semi-automatic pistol. So far, there are no witnesses who had seen the motorcycle’s registration number.

Earlier, Kuala Lumpur deputy CID chief had said the gunman and his accomplice could be hired killers with revenge a possible motive.

The case is being investigated under the Firearms Act 1960 and Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.

Robber might not have been injured

ONE of the six men who tried to rob a senior police officer at Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI) here last Tuesday may not have sustained a gunshot wound after all.

Brickfields district police chief ACP Wan Abd Bari Wan Abd Khalid said since the incident, police have been monitor-

ing hospitals and clinics for any person with gunshot wounds but none have surfaced so far.

“Initially, we believed during the shootout, two of the robbers were wounded by the police officer. One died on the spot while the other five fled,” said Wan Abd Bari.

"There was a trail of blood

spots that led us to surmise one of the five was injured but that may not be the case."

Police have ascertained the 19-year-old who died was from Batu Caves and did not have any previous criminal record.

In the 9.45pm incident, the police superintendent with the commercial crimes division at

Bukit Aman was confronted by six armed men in front of his house in Medan Burhanuddin Helmi, TTDI. The officer, who had just returned home, had stepped out of his car when the men, armed with machetes, surrounded him and ordered him to hand over his valuables.

Instead, the officer fled and threw his personal belongings, making the robbers pick up the items.

After running about 50m from his house, he turned around and fired three shots at the robbers. With one of their members killed, the other five fled.

"Thirty men aged 18 to 35 and six women all in their 20s tested positive for drugs," said Zakaria.

"It was the first time we had raided this nightclub although there were previous reports of fights."

HULU SELANGOR

Family row possible motive in murder of couple REVENGE could be the motive for the murder of a couple at their rubber smallholding in Hulu Yam last Wednesday.

Hulu Selangor district C r i m i n a l I nv e s t i g at i o n Department chief ASP Mohd Yatim Osman said yesterday police were investigating several possible reasons, including family dispute, which could have resulted in the murder of L. Ramasandram, 57, and his wife, A. Bakiam, 51.

“We believe a family dispute may be one reason why they were killed. We want to know if the dispute was over land, jewellery or something else,” Mohd Yatim said, adding two of the five suspects arrested were a 16-year-old boy and his 44-year-old father.

All five have been remanded until Friday to facilitate investigations.

Mohd Yatim said the suspects, arrested on Friday in Hulu Yam, Kerling, Hulu Selangor and Kuala Kubu Bharu, were working as farmers, a bus company manager, a construction worker and a rubber tapper.

From police records, three of the suspects were found to have previous records involving robberies.

The case is being investigated under Section 302 of Penal Code for murder.

On Sept 28, Ramasandram and Bakiam were found dead at their rubber smallholding in Hulu Yam. Their mutilated bodies were discovered by a rubber tapper at 5.40am. Several fingers on Ramasandram’s left hand were severed and his right hand cut off, while his wife’s nose was also cut off. Both sustained slash wounds on their heads, hands and faces.

'Danger' stalls to move Minister to give order if safety of blind in Brickfields is at risk

IF the Deepavali stalls in Brickfields pose a danger to pedestrians, they will have to move, says Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin.

He said a win-win solution must be sought for everybody involved, such as the festive stall traders and the blind community and others who use the walkways on which the stalls are built.

"The stalls here are a yearly affair and cannot be stopped.

However, if they pose a danger to the public, I will tell them to move," he said.

Last Friday, The Paper That Cares highlighted the issue of the row of stalls lining one side of Jalan Tun Sambathan covering the tactile walkways. The stalls sell items for Deepavali, which falls on Oct 26.

Blind pedestrians are forced to circle around the stalls with some ending up on the edge of the busy road.

Cars parked by the roadside further endanger the blind by forcing them to step onto the road to get past the stalls which also restrict traffic to shops lining the road.

Shop owners, pedestrians and the blind community have voiced concerns over the danger.

"A blind man injured himself when he inadvertently hit his head against a stall crossbeam the first day the stalls were allowed," said Dr R. Narkunam (pic), who runs a private clinic in Jalan Tun Sambanthan.

"I saw the incident and brought the man to my clinic to treat the gash on his forehead."

Dr Narkunam said the stalls also made access to his clinic difficult, to the point where a stretcher could not squeeze past easily.

"Some of my patients told me they had to walk down the street, around the last stall and then back up just to get to my clinic.

“The KL mayor and his officers should come down to Brickfields and see for themselves what happens.”

Society of the Blind in Malaysia's (SBM) chairman of communication and accessibility, Loh Kong Ken, said it was all right for the stalls to be placed there, but not on the tactile line used by the blind to navigate their way.

A local community leader, who wanted to be known only as Muralidharan, said there were just too many Deepavali stalls. "The stalls should be moved off the tactile line and their numbers reduced.

"Not only the blind, but ordinary people also have problems navigating the pathways safely."

Mohd Mazlan, a visuallyimpaired Monorail commuter, said he was disappointed the blind had been "overlooked' on the matter.

"Those making decisions should be more sensitive about the convenience and safety of pedestrians here."

Firm to fully refund on alarm-CCTV system that was installed but never activated WITH his family's safety high on the list, CALVIN CHEAH installed a security system at his Bukit Jalil home last November.

He says the package, comprising an alarm system and CCTVs, has yet to be activated to this day!

CHEAH says the security firm, Cam Power Technology Sdn Bhd, has yet to get the system operational despite full payment being made.

“The company owner keeps telling me my alarm system cannot be activated because my cable is not online. I now have a Streamyx broadband connection as well as a land line connec-

tion, yet he still maintains the same excuse.”

CHEAH says since the system was installed last year, the firm’s personnel never visited his house to make checks.

“Instead, the company owner insists there is a separate cable for alarm and that is not working.

"I had got a second opinion from another prominent company and they had said there was no such thing.

"If the phone cable works, it works.”

With recent news of a break-in near his area, CHEAH is even more anxious to get the home security system operational.

Leong says he will give CHEAH a full refund on the installation fees if the latter provides a solution.

Leong advises CHEAH to then seek the services of another company to get his security system installed.

CHEAH, when contacted, says a wireman had already confirmed all cables at his home were up and running.

“I have already done that.

I don't know what Leong is talking about. But I agree to terminate the service and hope he keeps his word this time.”

He says he will accept Leong's offer of a refund.

Only a "minimal amount" of protesters remained behind bars yesterday, a New York Police Department spokesman said.

Steamy sex causing men harm EXTRAMARITAL affairs run the risk of breaking more than just hearts, a US study has found.

A review of cases at one hospital has shown men who received a painful injury to their nether regions did so almost exclusively during the course of extramarital affairs or out-of-the-ordinary sexual encounters.

After noticing an unusually high number of men with penile fractures had obtained them in such circumstances, urologic surgeon Andrew Kramer decided to audit the records of patients from University of Maryland Hospital.

He found 16 cases between 2007 and 2011 of men who required surgery after breaking their penis, an injury that occurs when the organ is bent sharply, rupturing the chambers needed to sustain an erection.

About half of the men admitted they had received their injury in the course of extramarital affairs.

Nearly 70 per cent of the men said the encounter had occurred in an unusual venue, with the most common places being at work or in public bathrooms. ''It is unlikely to happen during normal, boring bedroom sex with your wife,'' Dr Kramer told the Herald.

Still, Azwan’s not alone. Didie and actress Julia Ziegler are at each other’s throats too at the moment.

The past week has been about the two of them trading statements in the media.

Julia claims Didie was responsible for the rumour that the former had a scandalous affair with an on-set cameraman two years ago, and the latter obviously is denying it.

No shortchanging at rock fest THERE’S no missing change here, as One Buck Short (now shortened and known by their acronym, OBS), has everything in check and set to a T for Rockaway 2011 on Oct 8, touted to be the biggest rock festival in the region.

“We’re organising it together with our friends at Livescape and we hope and pray that everything goes well that day,” says Rahul, the band’s frontman and guitarist (the rest of OBS are Mooky on vocals and Imran on drums).

Yes, he and the team are taking on the magnanimous task of putting together the massive event that’ll see 19 international and local bands perform and thousands of fans turning up to be part of the 12-hour event.

“I’ve always wanted to do this and it’s a self chosen task because there’s so much potential for our own local acts to perform in front of a huge crowd as well as to share the stage with international bands,” he said. OBS will also rock on stage playing their “greatest hits” from their albums Halal and Loving it, Cari Lah Duit, and Kerana Tiada Pilihan Lain.

“It’ll be a really good mix of our English and Malay songs,” said Rahul.

Halal and Loving it isn’t about being anti-Char Siew, as Rahul explains. Rather, its an expression of being anti-two faced and antihypocrisy.

“It’s just taking the piss out of things that are pretty much screwed up everywhere due to power, corruption and empty promises. When we were working on it back in 2008, my cousin jokingly suggested that our new album should be called Halal, because he’s loving it, and that’s how the name was coined.”

OBS has come a long way since the band formed in late 2002.

They have performed in a number of shows and festivals as well as collaborated with international rock and punk rock bands, Panic at the Disco, Fallout Boy, My Chemical Romance, MXDX and Good Charlotte. Now, they can’t wait to launch and showcase two out of the six tracks from their latest Malay studio album, Kampung Glam during Rockaway 2011.

Rahul explained the meaning of the name: “My band members were hanging out at Arab Street in Singapore where a large part of the demographics were Muslims. There was an area called Kampung Glam. To us, the name seems to tell a story of a regular Kampung guy who goes to the city to Cari Lah Duit.” This was one of the band’s songs, and it means to look for money through work or perhaps, pursue the life of the rich and glamorous in the city.

But Rahul added that Kampung Glam also depicts the reality of the modern day kampung.

“You’d think that they still burn candles and know nothing about the Internet. Dude, they have WiFi connections and are as into Facebook and Twitter as we are — that’s glam!”

Speaking about venturing elsewhere to find fame and fortune, Rahul believes that the local music scene has improved but there’s still a lot of potential for international recognition. “The problem is that a lot of attention is given to mainstream music and it’s popularised locally and internationally. Malaysian culture is so rich and diverse and I don’t think that mainstream music is a real and entire representation of the entirety of our music. So while the quality and standard of music is much better than it was years ago, more attention should be given to other genres of music and talents,” he explains. Meanwhile, OBS is working hard to reach out to the Malay-speaking audience as well as extend the reach for their English-speaking fans by going regional.

Although he expressed frustration with the limited opportunity for more musical diversity, he seemed very satisfied with OBS’ experiences when they performed overseas such as at Singapore’s Singfest in 2007.

“We were the only Malaysian band to play at the festival but were treated like superstars with our own backstage studios and make-up rooms,” said Rahul.

At the moment, OBS’ endless task of organising Rockaway 2011 and rehearsing for their performance has been stressful enough. “Yeah we’re feeling the pressure but we are doing it because we are more passionate about this than anything else. Our local acts will get to learn from the international bands and vise versa and this is a great opportunity for fans of rock music nationwide and overseas to travel to KL to be part of this big show.”

Rockaway tickets have already been purchased by people from Pakistan, Australia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore. —By KARINA FOO

Cooperation of coaches and governing body officials missing in anti-doping efforts, says Ramlan THE National Sports Institute (NSI) believes there is a need for associations and coaches to play a proactive role in the fight against doping.

NSI director-general Datuk Dr Ramlan Aziz (pic) said his institute can only do so much and the parties concerned should play their part to ensure the athletes remain clean.

Ramlan, who is currently in Jeddah, did not discount the possibility of ensuring stricter monitoring of the athletes especially during tournaments.

"The education is ongoing especially at the Malaysia Games level but it will have to be stepped up as a continuing improvement as resources allow," said Ramlan yesterday.

"But what is missing is the solid support and cooperation of coaches and sports governing body officials. They need to be educated too."

Ramlan added officials seem to lack knowledge while others are clueless on the demands of anti-doping efforts in modern sports.

"Some don't care while there are those who are ever willing to sweep things under a musty old carpet that stinks of fish!

If they keep up with their own international governing bodies, they would at least be in synchronicity and have the benefit of their advise and ongoing preventive programmes."

Ramlan said most officials recognise and respect the need for anti-doping but they have to step up their game and work together with NSI in the fight against the misuse of drugs.

Tipsarevic believes former world No 8 Baghdatis could climb back into the top 10 in the near future.

"He played a good match today. I am happy that my first title was won by beating a good player," said Tipsarevic.

FORMER New Zealand star Jonah Lomu admitted his kidney is failing. The 36-year-old was admitted to the renal unit of Auckland City hospital last week, after being taken ill.

He underwent his first transplant in 2004 after being diagnosed with Nephrotic syndrome, but fears are growing he could need a second.

"My kidney was failing and my body had become so toxic it started to shut down," Lomu told Woman's Weekly magazine in New Zealand.

"I thought it was just a cold or food poisoning. I couldn't put my finger on it.

All I knew was that I didn't feel well and I couldn't hold any food down for about 10 days. I was basically starving.

"Last Friday, I was just about to leave for a function and I crashed."

FRANK LAMPARD scored a hattrick as Chelsea reminded their Manchester title rivals that they also can score freely with a 5-1 thumping of bottom of the table Bolton Wanderers in the Premier League yesterday.

Doubles apiece for Lampard and Daniel Sturridge, who spent the second-half of last season on loan at Bolton, put the visitors four goals up with less than half an hour gone before Bolton pulled one back through Dedryck Boyata after the break.

Lampard, who scored in the 1-1 Champions League draw at Valencia midweek, completed his treble in the 59th minute with a low, right-footed shot in a performance that will go a long way to silencing the critics who have questioned his future.

Chelsea climbed above Newcastle United to stand three points behind leaders Manchester United and City, with the champions ahead on

goal difference. The top two have 19 points from seven games.

"We have been looking for this victory for quite some time," Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas said. "It fills us with pride.

"It's not that we have not been trying to do this before... (but) for various different reasons we weren't able to find a result with this expression before. We have been creating the same amount of opportunities but we were more prolific (in this game)."

On a mild but gloomy afternoon at the Reebok, last year's league runners-up took less than two minutes to get off the mark when Sturridge rose above Gretar Steinsson to nod in a Lampard corner.

The pair combined for the second goal on 15 minutes when Sturridge found Lampard with a neat pass across the goal that the midfielder swept in with his right foot past keeper Adam Bogdan, who was stand-

ing in for the injured Jussi Jaaskelainen.

Sturridge drove in the third on 25 minutes after cutting in from the right to unleash a bobbling left-footed shot that Bogdan should have held.

Two minutes later Lampard added the fourth, scooping in the rebound after Bogdan, enduring an afternoon as shocking as his pink shirt as he flapped between the posts, could only parry David Luiz's powerful shot.

Sturridge, who was applauded by home fans at the start of the game in recognition of the eight goals he notched in 12 Bolton appearances last season, did not celebrate either of his goals.

Bolton came out from the break pumped up and immediately got on the scoresheet when Boyata jumped high to head in a Martin Petrov freekick. They continued to enjoy a lively spell before spirits were crushed when Chelsea hit their fifth.

After exchanging passes with Didier Drogba, Lampard showed he still has a sharp finishing touch as he completed his hattrick after a few weeks where the future of the 33-year-old midfielder has been under the spotlight.

He was left out of the England starting line-up for last month's Euro 2012 qualifier in Bulgaria, the first time he had been dropped from the start of a competitive match since 2007, while he was also on the bench for last weekend's league game against Swansea City.

Bolton will feel they should have got a second goal after television replays showed Kevin Davies' effort had crossed the line before Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic cleared it with around a quarter of an hour to play.

Boudebouz to beef up Arsenal

SOCHAUX midfielder Ryad Boudebouz (pic) has emerged as a January transfer target for Arsenal, as Arsene Wenger looks to strengthen his squad.

The Gunners boss has been told he will have money to spend in the new year and is keen to bring in another creative player, as Jack Wilshere is likely to be sidelined until March by an ankle injury. Wenger has been linked with Hertha Berlin's Raffael and Werder Bremen's Marko Marin, but is apparently also keen on Boudebouz.

Arsenal officials have already made an initial enquiry about the Algeria international's availability and to find out whether he would be interested in moving to London.

KYLE WALKER’S first goal for Tottenham sealed a 2-1 victory for Harry Redknapp’s side over their north London rivals Arsenal at White Hart Lane yesterday.

Walker caught out Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny with a 30-yard strike in the second-half after Aaron Ramsey had cancelled out Tottenham midfielder Rafael van Der Vaart’s first-half opener.

The result means Tottenham move up to sixth place, five points ahead of their hated neighbours after a derby victory that brought an abrupt end to Arsenal’s recent revival.

This was the Gunners’ fourth defeat in seven Premier League games and they are 15th in the table, just two points off the relegation zone.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger’s frustration was evident in a fractious exchange with Clive Allen, the Tottenham coach, on his way down the tunnel after the final whistle.

The visitors had appeared capable of claiming at least a point until Walker drilled in a powerful long range shot that found its way through the arms of Szczesny, summing

up the Gunners’ difficult start to the campaign.

Wenger marked the 15th anniversary of his appointment as manager two days before this game by praising his side’s spirit and mental strength after three successive victories over Shrewsbury, Bolton and Olympiakos.

But that run was always under threat against an in-form Spurs side inspired by former Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor.

Spurs had started the game brightly and should have gone ahead in the seventh minute when van der Vaart released Scott Parker into the visiting area only for the midfielder to place his shot too close to keeper Szczesny.

Arsenal responded with a left shot from Theo Walcott that Spurs keeper Brad Friedel tipped wide of the post.

And when van der Vaart failed to convert a good opportunity at the near post midway through the half, Wenger’s side again reacted well, this time through Robin van Persie, who created a clear opportunity with a clever pull back that was wasted when Gervinho connected with a tame shot wide.

in front of goal and when Gareth Bale sent a powerful shot narrowly over at the start of the second-half, Tottenham showed signs of taking control of the game.

Both sides had chances to score but it took the combination of Adebayor and van der Vaart to conjure the opener.

Adebayor’s chipped pass found his teammate in space on the edge of the Arsenal area and the Holland striker brought the ball under control and finished with a leftfoot shot.

Arsenal centreback Per Mertesacker immediately appealed for handball but ref-

eree Mike Dean adjudged that van der Vaart had collected the ball on his chest although television replays suggested the decision was marginal.

The Gunners matched the hosts chance for chance and this time were rewarded for their efforts when Ramsey struck six minutes into the second-half.

The opening came after Younes Kaboul had only half cleared an Arsenal corner and Alex Song was allowed to run to the byline and deliver a low cross that the Wales captain turned home from close range.

Now Arsenal were in the

ascendancy and Redknapp’s growing concern was reflected in his decision to introduce Sandro to shore up his midfield in place of van der Vaart.

The switch helped steady the home side, although Redknapp could hardly claim that Walker’s 73rd minute strike was the result of a tactical masterplan.

The fullback chanced his arm after Luka Modric’s attempted shot had been deflected back towards the halfway line, advancing to within 30 yards of goal before unleashing a powerful drive that Szczesny should have kept out. — AFP

Udinese go top as Bologna stumble UDINESE went top of Serie A after Mehdi Benatia and an Antonio Di Natale (pic) penalty gave them a 2-0 victory over Bologna yesterday.

The win took the northerners a point clear of Napoli, 3-0 winners at Inter Milan on Saturday, ahead of the night’s crunch clash between Juventus, who would go back to the top with a two-goal victory, and champions AC Milan.

Despite selling stars Alexis Sanchez (to Barcelona) and Gokhan Inler (to Napoli) in the summer, Udinese proved they have lost none of the verve that took them to a fourthplaced finish last season and qualification for the Champions League play-offs, where they were beaten

by Arsenal.

Udinese coach Francesco Guidolin admitted he was proud to take his side into the international break at the top of the tree.

“The most that can happen is that Juve join us. Alone or in company from now until the resumption of the league we will enjoy this achievement,” he said.

“It really is a great satisfaction, even though I get angry when I hear people in the stands comparing us with Barcelona.”

Morocco centreback Benatia gave them the lead on 29 minutes when Pablo Armero’s corner was headed goalwards by Damiano Ferronetti only to hit Benatia, who

nonetheless was quick to swivel and shoot home.

Captain Di Natale was inches away from doubling the lead when his shot hit the post, the ball rebounding to Dusan Basta who slotted home but was signalled offside.

Di Natale then wasted a glorious opportunity when he danced around goalkeeper Federico Agliardi but prodded the ball into the side netting with his right foot when he should have used his left instead.

Bologna came close when Alessandro Diamanti curled a free-kick goalwards but Samir Handanovic plunged to his left to beat it away at his near post.

Diego Perez then committed a terrible foul from behind on Armero to give away a penalty, though the incident was possibly just outside area.
