Man runs amok and chases father A MACHETE-WIELDING man ran amok and attacked his father after the army pensioner reprimanded his son for causing a disturbance at their home in Kampung Bari Air Merah, Kulim, on Sunday night. Earlier, during a scuffle between them, the son lost his balance and fell on the floor, slightly injuring his head. Enraged, he grabbed a machete and chased his 60-year-old father, who sought refuge at a neighbour's house and contacted the police. A police team arrived and persuaded the man to surrender.
Exec fined RM5,000 for bribing cop A COMPANY executive was fined RM5,000, in default two months' jail, by the Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur yesterday for bribing a policeman. Judge Asmadi Hussin passed the sentence after R. Segarananthan, 27, pleaded guilty to an alternative charge under Section 214 of the Penal Code, which carried a jail sentence of up to three years and a fine. Segarananthan was charged with giving RM50 to Sgt Mohd Amir Mohd Yassin, of the South Klang police, as an inducement not to issue a summons notice to him for driving his car without valid road tax in Jalan Batu Ujur, Klang, at 10pm last July 23.

THE Education Ministry will look into making it mandatory for schools to conduct official audits on their facilities to ensure the safety of students. Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong said this yesterday while commenting on the status of the investigations into the death of Year Five pupil Muhammad Fakhrul Amin Abdul Rahman, who was hit by a falling goalpost at SRK Kampung Jawa, Klang, on Sept 17. THE withdrawal of the Kampung Baru Development Bill yesterday was a "people first" move by the government. "Despite claims of a victory by the Opposition following the withdrawal of the Bill, they didn't win anything," said Federal Territories and Urban Well-being Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin. "If anything, it was a win for the government's 'people first' policy and came about after talks with the community and its leaders." Raja Nong Chik said the Opposition wanted to create a trust fund for the Kampung Baru land owners but that was not feasible. “It might work while the funds are small but as the funds become larger it will become more complicated and it is better to let the government to handle it,” he said. Motion on polls reform panel passed THE Dewan Rakyat unanimously approved a motion yesterday to set up a Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) to look into electoral reform. The motion, tabled by Minister in the Prime Minister's D e p a r t m e nt D at u k S e r i Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz, received resounding support although there were calls from the Opposition for the government to hold off the next general election until the committee completes its task in six months. "We do not deny it is the Prime Minister's prerogative
when to call an election. But is this a right that cannot be changed?" asked Salahuddin Ayub (PAS-Kubang Kerian) when debating the motion. Winding up the debate, Mohamed Nazri said: "PRU-13 (the 3th general election) will not be the last GE for Malaysia and after that the world ends. If a snap election is called, the PSC's recommendations can be implemented in the 14th, 15th, 16th and GEs thereafter." To a question by Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (PKR-Permatang Pauh) on the use of indelible ink, he
said the PSC would deliberate on whether it should be introduced for the next general election. This was because it was the constitutional right of a voter to vote and some may not agree to being marked. He also said six months was enough time for the PSC to come up with its recommendations, and that its setting up showed the government's commitment in the matter. The committee will be made up of nine MPs — five from the BN (including its chairman), three from the Opposition, and an Independent.

Striking a balance Repeal of ISA to take into account individual rights and safeguarding public order, says Najib
THE two new Acts to replace the Internal Security Act (ISA) will provide a balance between promoting individual rights and civil liberties and safeguarding public order, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said. He told the Dewan Rakyat yesterday the move would allow Malaysia to move towards a mature democracy. "The government's machinery firmly supports the government's move to repeal the ISA and replace it with two new Acts that will take into account
the need to provide a balance between individual rights and civil liberties, and safeguarding public order," he said in reply to a supplementary question from Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi (BN-Kapit) during question time. Nanta Linggi had asked whether the government had any specific instrument or legislation to deal with problems previously dealt with under the ISA, and whether the civil service was supportive of the move to repeal the Act.
Earlier, Najib tabled in Parliament the repeal of the Restricted Residence Act and the Banishment Act, as announced in his Malaysia Day address to kick off his reform package. The repeal of the two laws is scheduled for debate tomorrow. THE Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) will call a strike if the government goes ahead with its revision of the Employment Act 1955. This is the hardline stance adopted by MTUC following a protest by 200 representatives of various trade unions outside Parliament yesterday. The union members gathered from 10.50am and carried banners demanding the government not table the Bill to amend the Act for a second reading. The amended Bill was first tabled on July 8 last year but the second reading was postponed twice before it was withdrawn last October. MTUC president Mohd Khalid Atan said if the government refused to back down on tabling the revised Act, the union would have no choice but to organise a strike among its 280 unions and 500,000 members. ”Yes, we will hold a strike as a last resort, but it will depend on how things go. This is not my decision but the MTUC’s general
council,” he told reporters after attending the National Labour Advisory Council (NLAC) meeting earlier yesterday. The NLAC meeting was attended by Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam, his deputy Datuk Maznah Mazlan and Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) executive director Shamsuddin Bardan. Mohd Khalid, however, walked out of the meeting and headed to Parliament building after handing over a letter to Subramaniam requesting the ministry to withdraw the Bill completely. The Bill is expected to be tabled in Parliament at the end of this month. "Subramaniam however did not say when the ministry would respond to the letter," Mohd Khalid said. “Within that period, we hope to meet them to further discuss the matter. We have not decided what we will do if the Bill is tabled at the end of the month but we will go step by step," he said.

Hishammuddin: We want to get it right THE Internal Security Act (ISA) can only be repealed in March because the government needs to consult and engage with stakeholders to ensure it is done correctly. Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said this to reporters in Parliament yesterday in response to opposition lawmakers calling the delay in repealing the law a "cop out" as Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is likely to call for a snap election soon. “No, it is a question of engagement and consultation. We want to get it right,” explained Hishammuddin. Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz echoed Hishammuddin's sentiment and said the new laws were now in the hands of the Attorney-General and the government would need to be cautious when repealing
the ISA. He said the two proposed new laws for national security would have to come into force first before ISA can be repealed. Nazri said the government wanted to ensure the two new Acts were "ready" before the ISA was abolished. “If we have no new law, then we must immediately release terrorists currently detained under the ISA,” the de facto law minister told reporters in Parliament. When questioned on the Bar Council's view that no new laws were needed as Malaysia had other legislation to deal with terrorism matters, Nazri said: “That is the Bar’s view and it is one which we will look at.” He stressed there should not be any gap between installation of the new laws and abolition of the ISA so that no complications would arise.

Dr Subramaniam had previously said the amendments to the Act were meant to protect workers and proposed after requests made by the National Plantation Workers Union due to alleged exploitation of their members. The Ministry also said it had consulted with 14 organisations and trade unions about 18 times since last year.

HUMAN rights groups are not impressed with the move to repeal of the Restricted Residence Act 1933 and Banishment Act 1956. In a random survey by The Malay Mail yesterday, the activists said both Acts were outdated and had little relevance in recent decades. Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suar am), a human rights group created in 1987 after Operation Lalang in which the government detained 106 people under the Internal Security Act (ISA) 1960, said the two Acts had been redundant for years. "Repealing them would not make any difference if detainees under those Acts before the repeal are not released," said Suaram programme manager E. Nalini (pic). Human Rights Commission of Ma l aysi a (Su ha kam) commissioner Muhammad Shaani Abdullah said both acts have become irrelevant over time. "There has been no regulating authority for those acts for years, with nobody monitoring whether those placed under restricted residence are adhering to that," he said.
At Parliament yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak announced both Acts, two of the oldest security laws in the country, were being repealed as the first in a series of political reforms he had promised on Sept 15. Under Clause 2 in both bills, which would not have a retrospective effect, it is stated that they were “outdated and had since outlived their purpose”. For the Restricted Residence (Repeal) Bill, which seeks to abolish the Act dating back almost eight decades, it was stated that it would not affect any order, action or proceedings taken before the date of its enforcement.

Community under siege Mat Rempit attack guards, steal handphone and demand protection money

THESE startling pictures captured the rage of these hooligans, armed with rocks and hell bent on reclaiming their Rempit playground lost to a fortified neighbourhood. The images, captured on CCTV at the guardhouse, spooked residents of Taman Gasing Indah, who all this while only heard tales of midnight raiders at the gated community. Residents wanted The Malay Mail to publish these photographs to highlight the plight of terror-stricken residents who feared the thugs may unleash more violence. For the past month, the usually placid community came under siege by a gang of Mat Rempit hell riders, threatening to terrorise the neighbourhood. The residents' sole line of defence is a boom gate, manned by two hired guards. The guards were usually subjected to verbal abuse by the gang, who would rev their machines and issue

threats. However, those threats escalated into violence last week when the gang, comprising eight to 10 teens, stormed the guardhouse and hurled rocks at the guards. Apart from stealing one of the guards' cellphone, they also demanded the guards pay them 'protection money', promising retribution if their demand was not met. Footages from the closed-circuit television (CCTV) system at 1.24am on Sept 26 showed eight to 10 teenagers arrived by motor-
cycles along the main road. Three of them then ran towards the guardhouse throwing rocks at the two security guards by the boom-gate fronting the guardhouse, damaging the door of the guardpost. Clearly outnumbered, the guards fled. The incident took less than a minute. One of the guards, Balwinder Singh, 21, said his mobile phone was stolen. He said based on feedback from those on his contact list, the
hooligans called numbers on his phone at random. “They used my phone to call my colleagues demanding RM100 in protection money,” Balwinder said. Taman Gasing Indah Rukun Tetangga chairman Lfred Chuah said the problem stemmed from 2008, when Mat Rempit entered neighbourhoods in the wee hours of the morning and smashed car windscreens for loose change. "The repeated incidents left us with little choice but to engage a security company and erect a
boom gate to protect the neighbourhood." He said security guards in Jalan 5/69 bore the brunt of harassment from the teens, following an incident where a guard ticked them off for being noisy and revving their machines. The hooligans, he said, came on most weekend nights, hanging outside the entrance to Taman Gasing Indah, which is protected by a boom-gate. Two police reports were lodged by private security company Bertam Security Services which
supplies the guards — on Sept 19 and Sept 29 — but there was no action. They then sought the aid of PJ city councillor Derek Fernandez, who text-messaged Selangor police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah, alerting him for action "before residents take the law into their hands". Police set up a roadblock at 2am on Sunday outside Section 5 neighbourhood to deter troublemakers from entering the neighbourhood. However, many residents felt the two-and-a-half hour road block was a lost opportunity to nab the culprits red-handed. “The police should have come incognito and caught them in the act,” said Chuah. Rukun Tetangga Safety Committee chairman Eric Chew said the committee was worried equipment at the guardhouse would be damaged if these teenagers continued their harassment. “We have floodlights and a CCTV system worth thousands of ringgit in place,” he said.

"The teenager admitted she gave birth to the baby girl in the toilet three hours before the gruesome discovery," said Abdul Rahim. "She said she panicked when
her baby was breathless and dumped the remains in the drain," said Abdul Rahim. The unmarried teenager from Sabak Bernam, Selangor worked nearby as a trainee restaurant hand. She shared the unit for the past three months with seven other women working as restaurant helpers. Apparently, the teenager's colleagues did not know she was pregnant. The teenager was taken to the Gombak district police headquarters for questioning. The infant's body was taken to Hospital Selayang for postmortem.

Remand order extended POLICE have extended the remand order of four suspects held over the murder grandmother S. Thanaletchumy, 64, at her house in Kampong Pasir Baru here last Tuesday. Kajang police chief ACP Abdul Rashid Wahab said the suspects will now be remanded until Saturday. "Our investigations are almost complete, including a statement from the victim's family who were initially too distraught to talk to us," said Rashid. THE long-standing dispute over the lack of a Kajang Municipal Council service centre in Zone 4 will soon be over, says embattled councillor Lee Kee Hiong. She said her centre, currently located in the same area as the Zone 6 one in Bandar Mahkota Cheras, will move to Bandar Sungai Long by January, as the rental there is now cheaper. "Back in 2008, it was populated by Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) students, hence the pricier rental," she told The Malay Mail, adding that service centres can be set up only in commercial lots. "Since the UTAR campus moved, rental has lessened considerably." Her claim was backed by the municipal council's corporate planning and public affairs director Shariman Mohd Nor. "We provide RM1,750 for rental to our councillors but all other expenses have to be settled themselves," he said. This, however, was in stark contrast to allegations by sacked DAP members Tan Chew Wah, 53, Yap Kon Min, 63, and sacked PKR member Chow Loy Fook, 50, that the DAP senior member and ex-political secretary to Lim

He also said only locals were given licences to operate stalls but were prohibited from selling or renting them out. Anyone caught doing so would have their licences revoked and deposits forfeited. Raja Nong Chik also urged stall owners to maintain the stalls area as complaints regarding cleanliness and congestion had been made in the past.

The trio were sacked by DAP following a hearing by their disciplinary committee on Aug 5, following complaints they had tarnished the party's name by openly criticising leaders via the media. The trio yesterday forwarded a letter to council president Datuk Hasan Nawawi Abdul Rahman to highlight the issue. "This has been going on since July 2008," said Tan. ALLEGATIONS of misappropriation of funds by Kajang municipal councillor Lee Kee Hiong are baseless. So said Selangor executive councillor for local government, study and research Ronnie Liu, who told The Malay Mail investigations conducted by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) last week found no evidence of corruption by Lee. "Following complaints made by (former Balakong New Village DAP branch secretary) Tan Chew Wah, the MACC investigated and found no wrongdoing," said Liu. Tan had reported Lee to the MACC for allegedly using her council allowance and annual allocations for nonState related matters. Those included accusations Lee had used her monthly allowance of RM1,750 to maintain a DAP branch located in the same premises as her service centre. Tan also claimed Lee had used her annual allocation of RM15,000 designated for

PJ medical centre says critical patients get attention first at emergency unit KENNADY SOOSAY of Taman Tasik Prima always dreads taking his children to Assunta Hospital in Petaling Jaya due to the long wait for treatment to come their way. "We have been going there since 1996. All my three kids were born there." On Aug 3, KENNADY brought his 18-monthold daughter to the hospital's emergency unit about 10.30pm as she was ill. After waiting for 45 minutes, he enquired at the counter and was told the medical officers (MOs) were busy. KENNADY was told there were only two MOs on shift
that night — one for emergency cases and the other for giving treatment at the ward. "All patients who go to hospitals at night obviously need immediate treatment. Otherwise, we would have gone to the nearest clinic! "I go there because all my children's health records are at the hospital." He says there were five other patients waiting for treatment that night and his daughter only received attention after he made a fuss at the counter personnel. KENNADY claims this is not the first time his family has to endure a lengthy wait at the hospital.
"In July, when I was away overseas, my wife took our daughter there. They were made to wait for two whole hours from 9.30am." He says his wife claimed the delay was due to the MOs being too busy attending to emergency cases. "My daughter is not even two years old but no priority has been given despite her being sick!" KENNADY recounts another ordeal was when he wanted to drop off his daughter at the emergency unit. "It was raining that night and my daughter's condition was bad. I wanted to rush her to the emergency unit before
paying the parking fees. "But suddenly, a car park attendant came running to me, demanding RM2. I told him my daughter was in an emergency and I would pay later, but he said his shift would end soon at 11pm and I had to pay him now. "Seriously? Is that what the hospital tells its staff to do when patients need emergency care?" KENNADY wants the hospital to explain. ● A SPOKESMAN for Assunta Hospital says the management apologises to KENNADY and his family for the inconveniences caused during his last visit.
"Our emergency department saw unforeseen circumstances that night. "Our record showed that on Aug 3, the complainant's daughter was registered at 10.30pm and was attended by our staff nurse at 10.52pm. "The nurse had done triage (a process to sort out critical from non-critical patients) and his daughter had been classified as a non-critical (Criteria Three) patient which does not require immediate attention at that time. "However, the patient would be continuously monitored by the nursing team. If the patient's condi-
tion deteriorates, our nurse will then inform the MO who will attend to the patient immediately." On the parking incident, the spokesman says the matter has been referred to the car park operator for further action. "Assunta Hospital will also endeavor to take steps to improve our services to meet customers' expectations." When contacted, KENNADY says he is not satisfied as the hospital has never contacted him to clarify the issues personally. "However, I really hope they make their service quality better."

'Newspapers to disappear by 2040' NEWSPAPERS will disappear and be replaced by digital versions by 2040, the UN intellectual property agency's chief said in an interview published yesterday. Francis Gurry, who heads the World Intellectual Property Organisation told the daily La Tribune de Geneve that "in a few years, there will no longer be printed newspapers as we know it today". "It's an evolution. There's no good or bad about it. There are studies showing that they will disappear by 2040. In the United States, it will end in 2017," he said. Canadian-born R a l p h St e i n m a n , 68, had been treating himself with a groundbreaking therapy based on his own research into the body's immune system but died on Friday after a fouryear battle with pancreatic cancer. His colleagues at Rockefeller University in New York called it a "bittersweet" honour. The Nobel Committee at Sweden's Karolinska Institute, which does not make posthumous awards, said it was aware of Steinman's death but it appeared it had not known before making its announcement. Abracadabra…Magicians cast their spells SOMETHING unexpected happened at the first show of Superstars of Magic at the Genting International Showroom in Genting Highlands. When Spain’s award-winning illusionist Adrian Soler took centrestage, his final routine with the double-dress change showed up the trick. His assistant’s black dress was caught underneath and it exposed the pink dress she wore previously. But like the true professional that he was, Soler pulled out the dress and continued on as if the “blunder” was part of the show. While such “mistakes” were hard to ignore, Soler did a really great job covering his tracks, while mending and piecing together a wonderful show that still left the audience awestruck. He was not the only act that caught the audience’s attention. Comedian-magician Michael Finney, who was also the night’s host, kept the crowd entertained with his wit and funny tricks. He clearly had fun pulling members of the audience onstage to take part in his impromptu magic acts. He was so good that many thought Finney

Temperatures soared when Dave Salmoni entered the room filled with female-only journalists (no need to wonder why), at a recent Press conference. The women were awestruck upon seeing this real-life Adonis who oozed sex appeal and charm, but Greek God qualities aside, Salmoni is humble, down-to-earth and a very passionate animal trainer, zoologist and television host. Of course, being in a room of hot-blooded females (two or four-legged), didn’t faze him as he’s spent a great deal of his life living with lions, grappling and playing with hippos and tigers — lucky animals! SALMONI was in Kuala Lumpur recently to present his new show, World’s Deadliest Towns that will be aired on Discovery Channel where he visits remote villages in India and Africa that live under the fear and threat of killer animals. We capture him — live! — as he shares his experience and journey so far. Salmoni: “By living with animals, I understand them very well and see their side of the story. In World’s Deadliest Towns, it was an opportunity and a mission to uncover both the human and animal sides of the story. It’s a real problem when you experience for yourself how the villages live in fear of death, such as when a tiger barges into their village and mauls everyone. But the animals are equally under the same threat as their own natural habitat is being destroyed because of urbanisation. ”Even elephants known as gentle creatures have attacked the village in West Bengal of India. Elephants are herbivores but something had caused them to trample on and tear the limbs out of people and

A villager told me that a one-minute stampede can wipe out one year of food supply for the entire village. ”I’ve seen other unexplainable things like black magic at Zambia’s Zambezi River where it is believed that black magic was responsible for driving a hippo to annihilate a cursed family. I took part in the villager’s hippo exorcism where a hippo idol was found in a small hole of a house and it was breathing, like it was real! The villagers believed that it was created by a witch to possess a real hippo in the river to slaughter the family. Being a scientist and typically skeptical of the supernatural, I’m starting to re-think things.” But the REAL magic was still at the Press conference room where reporters were awe-struck at the presence of the 6ft-3in-Herculean sight for sore eyes. I think that by being featured in these magazines, I reach out to a larger audience who aren’t usually interested or aware of endangered animals. So, yes I may pose halfnaked, but in my interviews, I emphasise animal behaviour, their rights and issues to create a greater awareness that these things exist.” Sadly, there is still a long way to go when it comes when it comes to animal (wild and domesticated) justice and rights in Malaysia. What can you do to improve the situation? “Unfortunately, some cultures see animals as things you can bully and kick around and that has to change with education and awareness. You were a lion trainer and were attacked by one of your lions about 13 years ago. But now lions and tigers are your best friends and it has helped you face your fears. Are you afraid that something like that may happen again?
And with such unpredictability with animals, would you rather live with animals or humans?
“There is an underlying fear of the ultimate price paid for living with wild animals. Although I’ve put myself in the most death-defying situations out there, it has to be done to show viewers the reality of the animal world so that they’ll understand them. Lions are as curious about us as much as we’re curious about them but after years of working with these animals and living in the wild with lions for six months, I can read their behaviour and anticipate their next move. But having said that, I’m very careful with what I do to avoid becoming
Animals! I especially love lions and tigers. They are very gregarious and once you earn their trust, they’ll accept you as part of the pack. There’s no betrayal or backstabbing like in the human world because you are genuinely part of their team. What animal(s) would you like to study or showcase next? I’d like to get to know more about sharks. They are very mysterious because they are underwater but also misunderstood, since they’re known to be predators that attack people at sea. But, they could become an endangered species too. Bands to battle at hotel MUSICIANS in bands, here is your chance to shine! The event will be judged by three prominent personalities from the industry. They are Karyawan president Datuk Freddie Fernandez, evergreen singer Datuk David Arumugam and the award-winning songstress Francissca Peter. “To enter the competition, contestants must be above 18. We are not going to narrow down the competition into genres. We accept every type of music as long as it is original. Those who audition will be given eight minutes to wrap their performance,” said Fernandez. The most important rule in the competition is that contestants must be either Malaysian citizens or are permanent residents. Only a group comprising three to eight will be accepted in the competition. Anything less or more than the given numbers will not be considered. To enter the competition, interested bands will have to bring their own hand instruments and keyboards as the organisers will only be providing basic equipment such as drums, bass, lead and keyboard amplifiers. “I will be looking for a band that
can deliver tight and polished performances. I am not going to be soft on the contestants. They will have to earn their title if they are really passionate about music and serious about it,” Francissca said. Each week, two best bands will be selected to go to the grand finale which will be on Jan 22, 2012. The champion will walk away with a cash prize of

THE move to hold the Bahrain Grand Prix next April, after its cancellation following antigovernment protests in March this year, is the Formula 1 of arrogance. Bahrain is out of place in an event that brings the world together. The world disapproves of Bahrain's jailing last week of 20 doctors who dared to treat protesters injured in those prodemocracy riots. Thirteen doctors were jailed for 15 years for crimes against the State while seven other medical professionals received sentences of between five and 10 years. A special tribunal, set up during the emergency rule that followed the protests, imprisoned the medics and it sparked worldwide condemnation. Their crime: treating the victims of the vicious attacks by the Saudi and Al Khalifa forces in March; and "forcibly" occupying a hospital.

Formula 1 relies on the brilliance of medics across the world and race teams should stand shoulder-to-shoulder with these professionals and snub Bahrain. One should be mortified of joining the motoring circus in a State that shows appalling contempt for the medical profession. Sadly, there are no howls of anger among Formula 1 drivers and teams over the imprisonment of the medics. Regrettably, there are no impassioned debates over the grotesque failures of an influential sport to boycott a vicious regime. Rather, the main talking point in the sport now is the worry that Formula 1 teams have to pay tax when they go to India for the first time next year. Truth is, countries need
Formula 1 more than Formula 1 needs them and cancelling the event would be a huge blow to the Bahraini authorities. The Grand Prix matters to this Gulf State as the nation attempts to establish its importance and voice on the international stage. It's part of foreign policy as well. Promoter Bernie Ecclestone (pic) is skilful at persuading people to dance at the click of a finger. Disappointingly, he appears unmoved. But that's to be expected from a man who has been quick to exploit the desire for nations such as Bahrain to use sport to promote their international credentials. This year's season-opener on March 13 in Bahrain was cancelled because the streets were bursting with thousands of pro-democracy protesters,
30 dead bodies, hundreds of wounded and 1,000 troops from Saudi Arabia drafted in to crush the rebellion. For Ecclestone, that was an easy decision to make. Now's the real test. Personally, I feel Formula 1 should not go to Bahrain. The teams need to be audacious, show some courage — and say NO.

Klang meet gets global nod
THE Asia Pacific Merdeka Singles, Mixed Pairs and Triples Indoor Bowls Championship has been elevated to a World Invitational tournament. This announcement was made by Malaysia Lawn Bowls Federation (MLBF) president Tun Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid at the opening ceremony of the 6th Asia Pacific championship at the Bayuemas Indoor Bowls Stadium, in Klang yesterday. Ahmad Sarji said it was high time the championship elevated its status. "The support from Asia Pacific has been tremendous
since the inauguration of the championship since 2006 where we have had no less than ten countries competing," said Ahmad Sarji. "But the time has come for the championship to give better competition to countries in this region and becoming a World Championship will elevate the standard of competition." There are 44 member countries affiliated to the World Lawn Bowls Federation (WLBF) but Ahmad Sarji hopes to see at least 32 countries compete next year. Invitations will be sent to get participation
from countries from Asia, Asia Pacific, Europe, Africa and the United States. "We will be writing to the WLBF to seek their sanction and include it into their calendar." Ahmad Sarji said the prize money offered could well be increased but the championship could just be limited to Men and Women Singles and Mixed Pairs. Currently the Asia Pacific Championship also has the Triples. The tournament offers a total of US$50,000 (RM160,450) in prize money — the highest offered in a championship.
The countries competing are Australia, Brunei, Canada, China, Fiji, Hong Kong, India, Macau, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia. Canada, however, pulled out at the eleventh hour due to "unforeseen circumstances". Among the notable bowlers include local stars Safuan Said and Muhammad Hizlee Abdul Rais (Malaysia), Aron Sheriff and Nathan Rice (Australia) and Shanon Mcllroy (New Zealand). The quarterfinal and semifinal stages will be on Friday and the final on Saturday.

Losing Steyn to a shoulder injury means the Springboks will no longer have a specialist long-range goal kicker in their side. De Villiers said it could prompt the opposition to push the limits of the law when competing for the ball at the tackle area. London alliance Arsenal, Spurs unite following ugly chants
ARSENAL and Tottenham Hotspur put their intense onfield rivalry to one side yesterday by taking the unusual step of issuing a joint statement condemning the chants of some of their supporters at Sunday’s north London derby at White Hart Lane. Arsenal fans were offensive towards their former striker Emmanuel Adebayor who now plays for Spurs, mocking the gun attack on his Togo team bus during last year’s African Nations Cup tournament in Angola which left three members of the Togo party dead. The Arsenal fans chanted: “It should have been you, it should have been you, killed in Angola, it should have been you.” Spurs fans targeted Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger with their own offensive insult as they have done for much of the last decade. Spurs manager Harry Redknapp was scathing of the Arsenal fans afterwards, describing the chants at Adebayor as “disgusting” and Spurs confirmed yesterday that several fans from the home and away sections of the crowd were ejected during the game. “How do you chant something like that. You can’t be right mentally. There were
kids up there,” Redknapp said. Wenger said he had heard the chants and added: “We respect everybody and want to be respected too.” The statement, issued on their websites read: “Both clubs were extremely disappointed to hear the chants from supporters at yesterday’s game. “Neither club tolerates foul language, racist chanting, homophobic chanting or any anti-social behaviour from their supporters. “We shall be working closely with each other to identify the individuals involved.” A Tottenham spokesman said Spurs, in line with club policy, would ban for life any fan found guilty of offensive chanting during the match which they won 2-1. Despite yesterday’s united front, it was not all harmonious between the clubs immediately after Spurs’ victory. Tottenham’s assistant coach Clive Allen described Wenger as “two-bob” — a derogatory put down — for refusing to shake his hand after the final whistle. Wenger replied: “Nothing happened.
