Man runs amok and chases father A MACHETE-WIELDING man ran amok and attacked his father after the army pensioner reprimanded his son for causing a disturbance at their home in Kampung Bari Air Merah, Kulim, on Sunday night. Earlier, during a scuffle between them, the son lost his balance and fell on the floor, slightly injuring his head. Enraged, he grabbed a machete and chased his 60-year-old father, who sought refuge at a neighbour's house and contacted the police. A police team arrived and persuaded the man to surrender.

Mandatory safety audits under study Wee: Schools' duty to ensure facilities safe

THE Education Ministry will look into making it mandatory for schools to conduct official audits on their facilities to ensure the safety of students. Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong said this yesterday while commenting on the status of the investigations into the death of Year Five pupil Muhammad Fakhrul Amin Abdul Rahman, who was hit by a falling goalpost at SRK Kampung Jawa, Klang, on Sept 17. Wee confirmed the report into the incident had been completed but declined to elaborate on the contents. He told The Malay Mail

schools were duty-bound to ensure their facilities were safe for use although there were no regulations making it mandatory for official audits to be conducted on the facilities as yet. "It is already mentioned in our standard operating procedures. It is their (schools') duty. They must ensure the facilities are safe," he said. In an earlier news report, Wee said the ministry had instructed its officers to take the necessary steps to prevent such an incident from recurring.

THE withdrawal of the Kampung Baru Development Bill yesterday was a "people first" move by the government. "Despite claims of a victory by the Opposition following the withdrawal of the Bill, they didn't win anything," said Federal Territories and Urban Well-being Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin. "If anything, it was a win for the government's 'people first' policy and came about after talks with the community and its leaders." Raja Nong Chik said the Opposition wanted to create a trust fund for the Kampung Baru land owners but that was not feasible. “It might work while the funds are small but as the funds become larger it will become more complicated and it is better to let the government to handle it,” he said. He also said the Bill was submitted earlier to gather feedback. "The Bill was withdrawn in

Asked if the ministry would make it a must for schools to conduct audits on the condition of their facilities and submit them to his ministry, he said the matter would be looked into. "We need to see how this can be done." On Sept 21, The Malay Mail reported that following the death of Muhammad Fakhrul Amin, 11, who sustained severe bleeding and a cracked skull, several non-governmental organisations called for the introduction of such an audit system. At the time, Wee told The Malay Mail there were no immediate plans to introduce

"Although some of those who voiced their opinion might be members of the Opposition, the Bill was not withdrawn because of them." Raja Nong Chik said the requests raised during the meetings with the Kampung Baru villagers and associations, such as the Kampung Baru Malay Agricultural Settlement (MAS), were reasonable. “MAS are concerned about the sentimental and historical value of Kampung Baru, which I think should be accommodated,” he said. "It was technically better to withdraw the Bill and resubmit as the process would be faster compared to adding amendments while it was still under submission. The real victory will come about when Kampung Baru is finally developed."

Motion on polls reform panel passed THE Dewan Rakyat unanimously approved a motion yesterday to set up a Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) to look into electoral reform. The motion, tabled by Minister in the Prime Minister's D e p a r t m e nt D at u k S e r i Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz, received resounding support although there were calls from the Opposition for the government to hold off the next general election until the committee completes its task in six months. "We do not deny it is the Prime Minister's prerogative

when to call an election. But is this a right that cannot be changed?" asked Salahuddin Ayub (PAS-Kubang Kerian) when debating the motion. Winding up the debate, Mohamed Nazri said: "PRU-13 (the 3th general election) will not be the last GE for Malaysia and after that the world ends. If a snap election is called, the PSC's recommendations can be implemented in the 14th, 15th, 16th and GEs thereafter." To a question by Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (PKR-Permatang Pauh) on the use of indelible ink, he

said the PSC would deliberate on whether it should be introduced for the next general election. This was because it was the constitutional right of a voter to vote and some may not agree to being marked. He also said six months was enough time for the PSC to come up with its recommendations, and that its setting up showed the government's commitment in the matter. The committee will be made up of nine MPs — five from the BN (including its chairman), three from the Opposition, and an Independent.

Striking a balance Repeal of ISA to take into account individual rights and safeguarding public order, says Najib

THE two new Acts to replace the Internal Security Act (ISA) will provide a balance between promoting individual rights and civil liberties and safeguarding public order, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said. He told the Dewan Rakyat yesterday the move would allow Malaysia to move towards a mature democracy. "The government's machinery firmly supports the government's move to repeal the ISA and replace it with two new Acts that will take into account

the need to provide a balance between individual rights and civil liberties, and safeguarding public order," he said in reply to a supplementary question from Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi (BN-Kapit) during question time. Nanta Linggi had asked whether the government had any specific instrument or legislation to deal with problems previously dealt with under the ISA, and whether the civil service was supportive of the move to repeal the Act.

Earlier, Najib tabled in Parliament the repeal of the Restricted Residence Act and the Banishment Act, as announced in his Malaysia Day address to kick off his reform package. The repeal of the two laws is scheduled for debate tomorrow. To a supplementary question from Nurul Izzah Anwar (PKRLembah Pantai) on whether the government was prepared to use the Emergency Revocation Bill prepared by the opposition

pact, Najib said the Opposition should not try to take credit. "I hope the Opposition will not try to take credit from this move. We've announced this since 2009. This (repeal of ISA) is not due to any demand by Pakatan Rakyat; it's the BN's own initiative." On the time-frame for the act, the PM said: "There are matters to be addressed first, including formulating the two acts as well as consulting the parties representing the interest of the people." — Bernama

MTUC: We'll strike if Employment Act revised By ASRUL HADI ABDULLAH SANI asrul@mmail.com.my

THE Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) will call a strike if the government goes ahead with its revision of the Employment Act 1955. This is the hardline stance adopted by MTUC following a protest by 200 representatives of various trade unions outside Parliament yesterday. The union members gathered from 10.50am and carried banners demanding the government not table the Bill to amend the Act for a second reading. The amended Bill was first tabled on July 8 last year but the second reading was postponed twice before it was withdrawn last October. MTUC president Mohd Khalid Atan said if the government refused to back down on tabling the revised Act, the union would have no choice but to organise a strike among its 280 unions and 500,000 members. ”Yes, we will hold a strike as a last resort, but it will depend on how things go. This is not my decision but the MTUC’s general

council,” he told reporters after attending the National Labour Advisory Council (NLAC) meeting earlier yesterday. The NLAC meeting was attended by Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam, his deputy Datuk Maznah Mazlan and Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) executive director Shamsuddin Bardan. Mohd Khalid, however, walked out of the meeting and headed to Parliament building after handing over a letter to Subramaniam requesting the ministry to withdraw the Bill completely. The Bill is expected to be tabled in Parliament at the end of this month. "Subramaniam however did not say when the ministry would respond to the letter," Mohd Khalid said. “Within that period, we hope to meet them to further discuss the matter. We have not decided what we will do if the Bill is tabled at the end of the month but we will go step by step," he said.

Hishammuddin: We want to get it right THE Internal Security Act (ISA) can only be repealed in March because the government needs to consult and engage with stakeholders to ensure it is done correctly. Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said this to reporters in Parliament yesterday in response to opposition lawmakers calling the delay in repealing the law a "cop out" as Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is likely to call for a snap election soon. “No, it is a question of engagement and consultation. We want to get it right,” explained Hishammuddin. Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz echoed Hishammuddin's sentiment and said the new laws were now in the hands of the Attorney-General and the government would need to be cautious when repealing

the ISA. He said the two proposed new laws for national security would have to come into force first before ISA can be repealed. Nazri said the government wanted to ensure the two new Acts were "ready" before the ISA was abolished. “If we have no new law, then we must immediately release terrorists currently detained under the ISA,” the de facto law minister told reporters in Parliament. When questioned on the Bar Council's view that no new laws were needed as Malaysia had other legislation to deal with terrorism matters, Nazri said: “That is the Bar’s view and it is one which we will look at.” He stressed there should not be any gap between installation of the new laws and abolition of the ISA so that no complications would arise.

Move fails to impress NGOs By THASHA JAYAMANOGARAN thasha@mmail.com.my

The MTUC chief also said the union was of the opinion that if the amendments are passed, it will erode workers' rights including those holding permanent jobs. Among one of the rights which Mohd Khalid said would be infringed is that employees will not have job security. Agencies supplying workers to a third party under the contractor for labour would become employers of the workers hence workers would lack job security

as they would be under the contractor’s payroll and not under the main employer. Dr Subramaniam had previously said the amendments to the Act were meant to protect workers and proposed after requests made by the National Plantation Workers Union due to alleged exploitation of their members. The Ministry also said it had consulted with 14 organisations and trade unions about 18 times since last year.

Rights of contract workers not clearly defined MTUC is against amending the term “sub-contractor for labour” to “contractor for labour” under Section 2 of the Employment Act 1955 because it would not protect the rights of contract labourers. It is also against the following proposed revisions:

news

become employers of the workers; ● Workers will not have job security as they would be under the contractor’s payroll and not be under the main employer; ● Discrimination in the workplace as not all workers will enjoy the same wages,

benefits and rights despite doing the same work; ● Removes the obligations and duties of employers to their workers; and ● Against Prime Minister’s platform for a high-income nation as labour suppliers are allowed to gain commission from the wages of workers.

HUMAN rights groups are not impressed with the move to repeal of the Restricted Residence Act 1933 and Banishment Act 1956. In a random survey by The Malay Mail yesterday, the activists said both Acts were outdated and had little relevance in recent decades. Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suar am), a human rights group created in 1987 after Operation Lalang in which the government detained 106 people under the Internal Security Act (ISA) 1960, said the two Acts had been redundant for years. "Repealing them would not make any difference if detainees under those Acts before the repeal are not released," said Suaram programme manager E. Nalini (pic). Human Rights Commission of Ma l aysi a (Su ha kam) commissioner Muhammad Shaani Abdullah said both acts have become irrelevant over time. "There has been no regulating authority for those acts for years, with nobody monitoring whether those placed under restricted residence are adhering to that," he said.

At Parliament yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak announced both Acts, two of the oldest security laws in the country, were being repealed as the first in a series of political reforms he had promised on Sept 15. Under Clause 2 in both bills, which would not have a retrospective effect, it is stated that they were “outdated and had since outlived their purpose”. For the Restricted Residence (Repeal) Bill, which seeks to abolish the Act dating back almost eight decades, it was stated that it would not affect any order, action or proceedings taken before the date of its enforcement.

Community under siege Mat Rempit attack guards, steal handphone and demand protection money

By MEENA LAKSHANA mmnews@mmail.com

THESE startling pictures captured the rage of these hooligans, armed with rocks and hell bent on reclaiming their Rempit playground lost to a fortified neighbourhood. The images, captured on CCTV at the guardhouse, spooked residents of Taman Gasing Indah, who all this while only heard tales of midnight raiders at the gated community. Residents wanted The Malay Mail to publish these photographs to highlight the plight of terror-stricken residents who feared the thugs may unleash more violence. For the past month, the usually placid community came under siege by a gang of Mat Rempit hell riders, threatening to terrorise the neighbourhood. The residents' sole line of defence is a boom gate, manned by two hired guards. The guards were usually subjected to verbal abuse by the gang, who would rev their machines and issue

CAUGHT IN THE ACT: CCTV footage of the Mat Rempit throwing stones at the security guards

threats. However, those threats escalated into violence last week when the gang, comprising eight to 10 teens, stormed the guardhouse and hurled rocks at the guards. Apart from stealing one of the guards' cellphone, they also demanded the guards pay them 'protection money', promising retribution if their demand was not met. Footages from the closed-circuit television (CCTV) system at 1.24am on Sept 26 showed eight to 10 teenagers arrived by motor-

cycles along the main road. Three of them then ran towards the guardhouse throwing rocks at the two security guards by the boom-gate fronting the guardhouse, damaging the door of the guardpost. Clearly outnumbered, the guards fled. The incident took less than a minute. One of the guards, Balwinder Singh, 21, said his mobile phone was stolen. He said based on feedback from those on his contact list, the

hooligans called numbers on his phone at random. “They used my phone to call my colleagues demanding RM100 in protection money,” Balwinder said. Taman Gasing Indah Rukun Tetangga chairman Lfred Chuah said the problem stemmed from 2008, when Mat Rempit entered neighbourhoods in the wee hours of the morning and smashed car windscreens for loose change. "The repeated incidents left us with little choice but to engage a security company and erect a

boom gate to protect the neighbourhood." He said security guards in Jalan 5/69 bore the brunt of harassment from the teens, following an incident where a guard ticked them off for being noisy and revving their machines. The hooligans, he said, came on most weekend nights, hanging outside the entrance to Taman Gasing Indah, which is protected by a boom-gate. Two police reports were lodged by private security company Bertam Security Services which

supplies the guards — on Sept 19 and Sept 29 — but there was no action. They then sought the aid of PJ city councillor Derek Fernandez, who text-messaged Selangor police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah, alerting him for action "before residents take the law into their hands". Police set up a roadblock at 2am on Sunday outside Section 5 neighbourhood to deter troublemakers from entering the neighbourhood. However, many residents felt the two-and-a-half hour road block was a lost opportunity to nab the culprits red-handed. “The police should have come incognito and caught them in the act,” said Chuah. Rukun Tetangga Safety Committee chairman Eric Chew said the committee was worried equipment at the guardhouse would be damaged if these teenagers continued their harassment. “We have floodlights and a CCTV system worth thousands of ringgit in place,” he said.

When going undercover is not that easy IT'S not that easy going undercover, says Petaling Jaya OCPD ACP Arjunaidi Mohamed. He was responding to criticism police lost a chance to nab troublemakers at Taman Gasing Indah by having roadblocks which may have alerted the teenagers to their presence.

“We can't go undercover. If we do so, we would be unable to inform anyone, including residents,” Arjunaidi said. He said police officers were deployed to check the area after a report was lodged on Thursday. "But when officers were there, nothing happened,"

he said, admitting the road block inhibited police from taking action as the adolescents kept away from the area. "But if we do not raise a road block, how are we going to nab them?" "We try our best to help residents there," he said, add-

ing he did not construe residents' messages as a threat. "We have good rapport with this community,"Arjunaidi said, adding he did not think they will take the law into their hands Bukit Gasing assemblyman Edward Lee commended police for their effort, but

The macabre find was made by a resident at the flat Zahrizan Sahari whose initial reaction to the pale looking doll was one of growing doubt. "doll" only to realise it was a dead infant. “I immediately called the police. The female infant's umbilical cord was still intact,” said Zahrizan, 27, an ex-army officer who, with his wife, had just arrived home after a trip to his hometown in Jengka, Pahang. “My wife and I have been staying here for just three months. I am shocked such a cruel crime has happened here." Gombak district police chief ACP Abdul Rahim Abdullah

said the mother of the dead infant was a local teenager residing at the same flat. "Our officers searched for clues at the flats, floor by floor and came across traces of blood leading to a unit on the second floor," he said. When police knocked on the door of the unit, a woman in her mid-20s opened the door. Inside they found a 19-year-old woman crying in her room. "The teenager admitted she gave birth to the baby girl in the toilet three hours before the gruesome discovery," said Abdul Rahim. "She said she panicked when

her baby was breathless and dumped the remains in the drain," said Abdul Rahim. The unmarried teenager from Sabak Bernam, Selangor worked nearby as a trainee restaurant hand. She shared the unit for the past three months with seven other women working as restaurant helpers. Apparently, the teenager's colleagues did not know she was pregnant. The teenager was taken to the Gombak district police headquarters for questioning. The infant's body was taken to Hospital Selayang for postmortem.

said more discreet action was needed to arrest trouble makers. "The police must maintain vigilance in the area to ensure residents are left in peace," he said. Lee said residents should hold discussions with teenagers to resolve matters.

"This is a social problem requiring a conciliatory approach by residents," he said. He said organising games and charities for involvement of teenagers in community programmes was a good means of positively channelling their energy.

Stalls ordered to move FT Minister tells Deepavali traders in Brickfields to make way for the blind

By Hamzah Nazari hamzah@mmail.com.my

THE Federal Territories and Well-being Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin has ordered Deepavali st a l ls a long Ja l an Tun Sambanthan in Brickfields to be moved immediately to clear the way for the blind. Raja Nong Chik issued the intructions to the City Hall officers after visiting the area yesterday. "Move them off the tactile walkways," he said. The Malay Mail highlighted the matter last Friday that the row of stalls which lined one side of the tactile walkways posed a danger to the blind community. When approached and asked by The Paper That Cares when the move would take place, Raja Nong Chik replied: “Immediately.” The stalls along the busy road were opened in con-

junction with the upcoming Deepavali celebrations on Oct 26. B e s i d e s L itt l e In d i a , Brickfields is also home to the Malaysian Association for the Blind (MAB) which let it be known the stalls made moving along the walkway more dangerous for the visually-impaired. Members of the blind community said they had to step off the tactile walkway, often walking on the edge of the busy road, in order to get around the stalls. Meanwhile, The Malay Mail was also told yesterday that in the event the stalls could not be moved, City Hall would place officers alongside the stalls to safely direct blind pedestrians along the inner walkway. This back-up plan was meant to ensure the stall owners would be treated fairly without compromising public safety.

Dispute over Kajang service centre to end soon By FAIZAL NOR IZHAM faizal.nor@mmail.com.my

THE long-standing dispute over the lack of a Kajang Municipal Council service centre in Zone 4 will soon be over, says embattled councillor Lee Kee Hiong. She said her centre, currently located in the same area as the Zone 6 one in Bandar Mahkota Cheras, will move to Bandar Sungai Long by January, as the rental there is now cheaper. "Back in 2008, it was populated by Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) students, hence the pricier rental," she told The Malay Mail, adding that service centres can be set up only in commercial lots. "Since the UTAR campus moved, rental has lessened considerably." Her claim was backed by the municipal council's corporate planning and public affairs director Shariman Mohd Nor. "We provide RM1,750 for rental to our councillors but all other expenses have to be settled themselves," he said. This, however, was in stark contrast to allegations by sacked DAP members Tan Chew Wah, 53, Yap Kon Min, 63, and sacked PKR member Chow Loy Fook, 50, that the DAP senior member and ex-political secretary to Lim

es have been issued for stalls in Lorong Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Lebuh Ampang, Brickfields, Sentul, Jalan

Masjid India and Jalan Ipoh. Last year, 786 Deepavali stalls were opened, of which 418 were within six areas that included Brickfields and Sentul which are under the care of various associations. This year, an additional 223 stalls have been placed in those areas. Raja Nong Chik said the increase was to give locals, particularly those from lowincome families, the opportunity to earn extra money. He also said only locals were given licences to operate stalls but were prohibited from selling or renting them out. Anyone caught doing so would have their licences revoked and deposits forfeited. Raja Nong Chik also urged stall owners to maintain the stalls area as complaints regarding cleanliness and congestion had been made in the past.

HOT ISSUE: No action taken to clear about 60 abandoned cars in the vicinity of Taman Bukit Permai, Sungai Long

Kit Siang had pocketing her State funds and neglected her councillor duties. The trio were sacked by DAP following a hearing by their disciplinary committee on Aug 5, following complaints they had tarnished the party's name by openly criticising leaders via the media. The trio yesterday forwarded a letter to council president Datuk Hasan Nawawi Abdul Rahman to highlight the issue. "This has been going on since July 2008," said Tan. "We find her reasons unsatisfactory. She doesn't have written authorisation from the council to have her centre in another zone. 30 per cent of the shoplots in Bandar Sungai Long are available, whose

rental is only RM300 to RM500 monthly. This is contrary to her previous claim rental here fetched up to RM2,800 a month." He said because the Zone 4 service centre was located far away, various issues in the area had not been duly addressed. Tan said Zone 4 residents have been missing out on State government services such as the Mesra Usia Emas policy and Tabung Warisan Anak Selangor (TAWAS). The Mesra Usia Emas offers RM2,500 each to all Selangor senior citizens to assist with expenses, while TAWAS offers all Selangor youth to receive a RM1,500 allowance when they turn 18. Free mammogram check-ups to detect breast cancer

are also offered to women . "According to media reports in September, state exco Ronnie Liu announced those found misusing their allowances would not have their term renewed," Tan added. When asked about the 60 abandoned cars issue in Sungai Long several years ago where nothing was done, Lee explained the cars were within private property. "The area belonged to a housing developer that had gone bankrupt. I couldn't have them towed as I didn't have the authority," she said. She said she plans to sue her detractors next week. The issue had been highlighted by The Malay Mail Hotline on March 10.

MACC clears councillor of graft

ALLEGATIONS of misappropriation of funds by Kajang municipal councillor Lee Kee Hiong are baseless. So said Selangor executive councillor for local government, study and research Ronnie Liu, who told The Malay Mail investigations conducted by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) last week found no evidence of corruption by Lee. "Following complaints made by (former Balakong New Village DAP branch secretary) Tan Chew Wah, the MACC investigated and found no wrongdoing," said Liu. Tan had reported Lee to the MACC for allegedly using her council allowance and annual allocations for nonState related matters. Those included accusations Lee had used her monthly allowance of RM1,750 to maintain a DAP branch located in the same premises as her service centre. Tan also claimed Lee had used her annual allocation of RM15,000 designated for

community programmes on dinners with DAP members. The DAP disciplinary committee sacked Tan in August for repeated personal attacks against party leaders. Another member from the Serdang Baru branch, Yap Kon Min, who also made allegations against Lee, was also expelled for making defamatory and malicious accusations against party leaders. Asked why both former members made the allegations, Liu said it was a case of being bitter about missed opportunities. "They were bitter with the party because they thought they would be appointed councilors," said Liu, adding he agreed with the action of the DAP disciplinary committee to sack them. On claims Lee was neglecting her duties in her Kajang jurisdiction of Zone 4, Liu said he had not received any complaints from residents there.

Hospital hold-up

By IKRAM ISMAIL and siti nursuraya ali

PJ medical centre says critical patients get attention first at emergency unit KENNADY SOOSAY of Taman Tasik Prima always dreads taking his children to Assunta Hospital in Petaling Jaya due to the long wait for treatment to come their way. "We have been going there since 1996. All my three kids were born there." On Aug 3, KENNADY brought his 18-monthold daughter to the hospital's emergency unit about 10.30pm as she was ill. After waiting for 45 minutes, he enquired at the counter and was told the medical officers (MOs) were busy. KENNADY was told there were only two MOs on shift

that night — one for emergency cases and the other for giving treatment at the ward. "All patients who go to hospitals at night obviously need immediate treatment. Otherwise, we would have gone to the nearest clinic! "I go there because all my children's health records are at the hospital." He says there were five other patients waiting for treatment that night and his daughter only received attention after he made a fuss at the counter personnel. KENNADY claims this is not the first time his family has to endure a lengthy wait at the hospital.

"In July, when I was away overseas, my wife took our daughter there. They were made to wait for two whole hours from 9.30am." He says his wife claimed the delay was due to the MOs being too busy attending to emergency cases. "My daughter is not even two years old but no priority has been given despite her being sick!" KENNADY recounts another ordeal was when he wanted to drop off his daughter at the emergency unit. "It was raining that night and my daughter's condition was bad. I wanted to rush her to the emergency unit before

paying the parking fees. "But suddenly, a car park attendant came running to me, demanding RM2. I told him my daughter was in an emergency and I would pay later, but he said his shift would end soon at 11pm and I had to pay him now. "Seriously? Is that what the hospital tells its staff to do when patients need emergency care?" KENNADY wants the hospital to explain. ● A SPOKESMAN for Assunta Hospital says the management apologises to KENNADY and his family for the inconveniences caused during his last visit.

"Our emergency department saw unforeseen circumstances that night. "Our record showed that on Aug 3, the complainant's daughter was registered at 10.30pm and was attended by our staff nurse at 10.52pm. "The nurse had done triage (a process to sort out critical from non-critical patients) and his daughter had been classified as a non-critical (Criteria Three) patient which does not require immediate attention at that time. "However, the patient would be continuously monitored by the nursing team. If the patient's condi-

tion deteriorates, our nurse will then inform the MO who will attend to the patient immediately." On the parking incident, the spokesman says the matter has been referred to the car park operator for further action. "Assunta Hospital will also endeavor to take steps to improve our services to meet customers' expectations." When contacted, KENNADY says he is not satisfied as the hospital has never contacted him to clarify the issues personally. "However, I really hope they make their service quality better."

'Cash-only' highway trip AMIR HAMZAH normally pays highway tolls in cash but decides to use the Touch ‘n Go during a Raya trip to Kuantan in Pahang due to the heavy traffic along the East Coast Expressway then. He says he planned to top up the prepaid toll card's amount at a petrol station, but claims none had a reload facility. AMIR says he had to exit

the Kuantan toll plaza and pay cash as he had insufficient balance in his Touch ‘n Go card. He admits he should have had sufficient amount on his card but there is no facility for him to do so. AMIR says Touch ‘n Go is supposed to provide a hassle-free means to travel. ● TOUCH ‘N GO SDN BHD customer division

head Azmi Jafar says there are customer service centres at selected toll plazas on every highway. He says reloads along the East Coast Expressway are available at Petronas stations at Lot 1092, Karak, and Lot 2858, Simpang Songsang; and BHP station at Karak apart from mobile sales teams deployed at several toll plazas.

TAKE NOTE 1. KTM Intercity services in the East Coast, disrupted after a Ekspres Senandung Timuran (TumpatWoodlands) coach derailed between Krambit-Jerantut early Monday, has been fully restored at 2.56pm yesterday. 2. National Registration Department office in Kota Damansara will be closed from tomorrow until Oct 21 for wiring works. 3. The authorities will immediately revoke the licences of any of the 924 Deepavali bazaar trading lots found to be sold or leased out to foreigners.

"In conjunction with the recent Hari Raya and Merdeka festive season, Touch ‘n Go Sdn Bhd had initiated a corporate social responsibility campaign, between Aug 22 and Sept 11, to reward customers.” Azmi says the campaign was aimed at ensuring customer convenience during festive seasons. When contacted, AMIR says he is not satisfied with

the response. He says when he drove to Kuantan again on Sept 23 and returned to KL on Sept

Online comments www.mmail.com.my Hole in home security (Oct 3) ● FROM what is shown, the alarm-CCTV system has at least two problems: 1) at least one of CCTV cameras is not working; and 2) a 'cable' is said to be faulty, presumably an Internet link to a central monitoring system or for viewing the CCTV remotely. For the first problem, if the land line and Streamyx are working, the problem is NOT with the phone cable. The system is just NOT 'talking'

to the Internet. For the second problem, the faulty CCTV camera has NOTHING to do with telephone cables. It is either a faulty camera or faulty wiring from the camera to the recorder, or faulty recorder. It is nonsense to ask for a third party to verify the wiring if the company did the wiring. This is a typical contractor's excuse, trying to lay the blame on other contractors who were doing work at the same time as he did. — Fairgo

'Unknown' phone bill fear (Sept 30) ● WHAT is there for the complainant to be 'pleased with the outcome' when it was his own problem for not making the monthly charges? I do say shame on him! — WTF Coupon confusion (Sept 29) ● I BELIEVE only F&B vouchers are value for money. All others, such as tour packages, electrical items and mobile

Worse, they will not entertain you on a weekend, requesting customers to come in off-peak hours. Malaysian retailers are not ready or not trustworthy enough for these

kind of deals. Plus, how much discount is genuinely being given? After awhile, consumers will experience burnouts just like the sites, as it is currently happening in the US, where it all started. It will be good if the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry monitors these sites as consumers are forking out money ahead of the service being provided. And Malaysian businesses, being what they are, will certainly look out for loopholes to make the most of it. — Anonymous

WHEN social media analyst Jeremiah Cohick suggested on his Facebook account CEO Mark Zuckerberg was too busy running the web giant to actually use it, saying: "In the same way drug dealers don't use the product they sell. I doubt Zuckerberg is on Facebook all day. Visionaries don't idle online," he got a swift reply. "No, I really do use Facebook all day long," Zuckerberg wrote yesterday. The exchange prompted a flurry of comment from others, with more than 1,700 people clicking "like" on Zuckerberg's response, TechCrunch reported.

'Newspapers to disappear by 2040' NEWSPAPERS will disappear and be replaced by digital versions by 2040, the UN intellectual property agency's chief said in an interview published yesterday. Francis Gurry, who heads the World Intellectual Property Organisation told the daily La Tribune de Geneve that "in a few years, there will no longer be printed newspapers as we know it today". "It's an evolution. There's no good or bad about it. There are studies showing that they will disappear by 2040. In the United States, it will end in 2017," he said. Gurry noted in the US, there are already more digital copies sold than paper copies of newspapers. A key problem is the revenue system. "How can editors find revenues to pay those who write these articles?" — AFP

HE'S cool in the face of terrorism and financial turmoil. But put the world's biggest pop star in a huge pair of heels and Mr President's suddenly lost his poker face. Lady Gaga and Barack Obama only crossed paths for a matter of minutes but it was enough to intimidate the most powerful man in the western world, ABC News reports. “She was wearing 16-inch heels. She was eight feet tall. It was a little intimidating,” he said. Obama then told a legion of Gaga's gay and lesbian followers: "I held some productive bilateral talks with your leader". The pair were in Washington DC for the Human Rights Campaign gala where Lady Gaga had been keen to get in the US President's ear about bullying following the suicide of 14-year-old fan.

GONE TOO SOON: Steinman died of the disease he was researching

STOCKHOLM

Nobel prize comes too late for scientist A SCIENTIST who won the Nobel prize for medicine yesterday for work on fighting cancer died of the disease himself just three days before he could be told of his award and after using his own discoveries to extend his life. Canadian-born R a l p h St e i n m a n , 68, had been treating himself with a groundbreaking therapy based on his own research into the body's immune system but died on Friday after a fouryear battle with pancreatic cancer. His colleagues at Rockefeller University in New York called it a "bittersweet" honour. The Nobel Committee at Sweden's Karolinska Institute, which does not make posthumous awards, said it was aware of Steinman's death but it appeared it had not known before making its announcement. It is likely Steinman died without being aware he had won

science's ultimate accolade, along with American Bruce Beutler and Jules Hoffmann of France. Swedish officials on the Nobel Committee rushed to tr y to clarify what secretary-general Goran Hansson called a "unique situation, because he died hours before the decision was made". Hansson said the panel would review what to do with the prize money, due to rules against posthumous awards. "The Nobel Foundation has recognised R alph Steinman for his seminal discoveries concerning the body's immune responses," said Rockerfeller University president Marc TessierLavigne. "But the news is bittersweet, as we also learned this morning from Ralph's family that he passed a few days ago after a long battle with cancer," he added. The institution said in a statement: "Steinman passed away on Sept 30. He was 68. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer four years ago and his life was extended using a dendriticcell based immunotherapy of his own design." — Reuters

RESCUE helicopters and boats distributed food, water and medicine to thousands of Filipinos marooned in flooded towns north of the capital yesterday and authorities said water levels were starting to recede. Wide areas of rice-producing Bulacan and Pampanga provinces have been submerged since late last week after the Philippines was hit by two typhoons. A third storm may develop this week. Typhoons Nesat and Nalgae killed nearly 60 people, with 36 still missing, and damaged about 9 billion pesos worth of crops and infrastructure on the main island of Luzon, the national disaster agency said yesterday. Josefina Timoteo, head of

the civil defence office in the central Luzon region, said water levels has started to recede in some areas in Bulacan, allowing delivery of relief goods to isolated coastal areas. STUDENT Amanda Knox pleaded for mercy yesterday ahead of an imminent verdict in her appeal on murder and sexual assault as victim Meredith Kercher's family said their loved one had been forgotten. "I did not kill, I did not rape, I did not steal. I wasn't there," the tearful 24-year-old told jurors in the university town of Perugia in a court packed with dozens of photographers, cameramen and Knox supporters. "I am paying with my life for a crime I did not commit," an ashen-faced Knox said, speaking in almost flawless Italian, just before the jury retired for

the verdict. "I want to go home. I want to return to my life," she said as she struggled to contain her emotions. Knox also told the court her faith in Italian police had been "betrayed" and she had been "manipulated" during her fouryear legal saga. "I lost a friend in the most brutal and inexplicable way possible," she said of her housemate Kercher, a 21-year-old British student. It’s the voice, not the looks LOOKS and a charming smile may open some doors, but at the end of the day, when superficial attributes are not supported by real talent, survival in a fickle entertainment industry becomes real "iffy". Now, if you choose talent first before anything else, Vokal Bukan Sekadar Rupa, a new singing competition being promoted by TV3, is definitely for you. The good news is, if you feel that you are in that “all voice but no looks” bracket, this may be your chance to prove you have what it takes. The first round of auditions was two weeks ago, and a total of 600 hopefuls came and tried out within two days. Among of the judges were singer and composer Ajai, the programme executive producer Muhamad Sufian Che Isa and producer Ahmad Shaifullizam Arshad. “Out of 600 who tried out,

only 14 got through and that clearly shows we are only looking for quality in this competition,” Ajai said. While looks are really not the main criteria, the judges still had to determine if the chosen participants had presence and charisma. “We are definitely looking for that golden voice. However, they also need to have the right aura and that elusive X-factor. We are looking for characters that could grab people’s attention by just being on stage. It is hard to find but we have faith that they are hidden somewhere waiting to be discovered,” Ajai said. Once chosen, the participants will be exposed to a variety of tasks and challenges. They will also have to attend vocal and motivation classes as well as other related workshops. Here’s the mechanism of the competition. Each week, 10 contestants will be put to

The points will be divided into two segments — 50 per cent will be from the resident jury while the remaining will be

Each week, they will also be joined by a guest jury. The second audition was done last weekend at the Theaterette, Sri Pentas Bandar Utama from 10am to 5pm. Abracadabra…Magicians cast their spells SOMETHING unexpected happened at the first show of Superstars of Magic at the Genting International Showroom in Genting Highlands. When Spain’s award-winning illusionist Adrian Soler took centrestage, his final routine with the double-dress change showed up the trick. His assistant’s black dress was caught underneath and it exposed the pink dress she wore previously. But like the true professional that he was, Soler pulled out the dress and continued on as if the “blunder” was part of the show. While such “mistakes” were hard to ignore, Soler did a really great job covering his tracks, while mending and piecing together a wonderful show that still left the audience awestruck. He was not the only act that caught the audience’s attention. Comedian-magician Michael Finney, who was also the night’s host, kept the crowd entertained with his wit and funny tricks. He clearly had fun pulling members of the audience onstage to take part in his impromptu magic acts. He was so good that many thought Finney

MULTI TASKER: James' segment was a series of non-stop action from juggling to sleight-of-hand while keeping his audience in stitches should get a slot for himself and show others what else he had up his sleeves. The Superstars of Magic featured five other world-class magicians including Kevin James (USA), Victor Voitko (Ukraine), Timo Marc (Germany) and the only female magician performing with the troupe — China’s Juliana Chen, who resides in Los Angeles. James kept the audience’s eyes transfixed on stage when he juggled between tricks while cracking jokes and keeping everyone amused. His show was divided into two parts. The first

LEVITATION: Voitko gets his assistant to float up in midair

part included the classic sawinto-half trick, where his assistant, who dressed as a nurse, was “sawed” into half and left for “dead” on the table. The second part of the show was as just as intriguing. “For the following magic, there is a story behind it,” James said, while relating a story on how a little girl wished to see what snow really looked like. Inviting the audience to watch closely, he turned a ball of wet paper into falling snow — literally. And to that, the audience responded with a thunderous round of applause that echoed through the hall. Chen did not disappoint either with her mesmerising card tricks. Known to have “quick fingers,” Chen got the audience to concentrate, then “plucked” her deck of cards from thin air, which she then flicked at them. She also brought with her a century-old illusion known to the Chinese as the “face-changing” trick, where the performer changes masks in synchrony with their body movement. While most magicians “transform” up to 10 faces each time,

BEDAZZLING: Soler's quick change routine Chen limited hers to just four. The show was directed by a young and talented David Lai, who himself, is a well-known magician in Malaysia. He said that Superstars of Magic was a fast-paced show. “One can expect everything to be fast-paced within one hour and 20 minutes. As you can see there were no rests in between. You ccould probably say that this is a full-fledged magic show,” said Lai. The other great illusionist was Marc who displayed his skills by combining visual art, animation and shadow play. And then there was Voitko from Ukraine, who showed off his levitation skills in a dreamlike setting. — Pix and story by

TV host and zoologist talks ab

By KARINA FOO karina@mmail.com.my IS it the weather? Or did it suddenly get really Hot in Herre...? Temperatures soared when Dave Salmoni entered the room filled with female-only journalists (no need to wonder why), at a recent Press conference. The women were awestruck upon seeing this real-life Adonis who oozed sex appeal and charm, but Greek God qualities aside, Salmoni is humble, down-to-earth and a very passionate animal trainer, zoologist and television host. Of course, being in a room of hot-blooded females (two or four-legged), didn’t faze him as he’s spent a great deal of his life living with lions, grappling and playing with hippos and tigers — lucky animals! SALMONI was in Kuala Lumpur recently to present his new show, World’s Deadliest Towns that will be aired on Discovery Channel where he visits remote villages in India and Africa that live under the fear and threat of killer animals. We capture him — live! — as he shares his experience and journey so far. Salmoni: “By living with animals, I understand them very well and see their side of the story. In World’s Deadliest Towns, it was an opportunity and a mission to uncover both the human and animal sides of the story. It’s a real problem when you experience for yourself how the villages live in fear of death, such as when a tiger barges into their village and mauls everyone. But the animals are equally under the same threat as their own natural habitat is being destroyed because of urbanisation. ”Even elephants known as gentle creatures have attacked the village in West Bengal of India. Elephants are herbivores but something had caused them to trample on and tear the limbs out of people and

A villager told me that a one-minute stampede can wipe out one year of food supply for the entire village. ”I’ve seen other unexplainable things like black magic at Zambia’s Zambezi River where it is believed that black magic was responsible for driving a hippo to annihilate a cursed family. I took part in the villager’s hippo exorcism where a hippo idol was found in a small hole of a house and it was breathing, like it was real! The villagers believed that it was created by a witch to possess a real hippo in the river to slaughter the family. Being a scientist and typically skeptical of the supernatural, I’m starting to re-think things.” But the REAL magic was still at the Press conference room where reporters were awe-struck at the presence of the 6ft-3in-Herculean sight for sore eyes. You were a lion trainer and were attacked by one of your lions about 13 years ago. But now lions and tigers are your best friends and it has helped you face your fears. Are you afraid that something like that may happen again?

And with such unpredictability with animals, would you rather live with animals or humans?

“There is an underlying fear of the ultimate price paid for living with wild animals. Although I’ve put myself in the most death-defying situations out there, it has to be done to show viewers the reality of the animal world so that they’ll understand them. Lions are as curious about us as much as we’re curious about them but after years of working with these animals and living in the wild with lions for six months, I can read their behaviour and anticipate their next move. But having said that, I’m very careful with what I do to avoid becoming

Animals! I especially love lions and tigers. They are very gregarious and once you earn their trust, they’ll accept you as part of the pack. There’s no betrayal or backstabbing like in the human world because you are genuinely part of their team. What animal(s) would you like to study or showcase next? I’d like to get to know more about sharks. They are very mysterious because they are underwater but also misunderstood, since they’re known to be predators that attack people at sea. But, they could become an endangered species too. It’ll be interesting to see how they live and behave when they’re not threatened and it’ll be great if I could work with some people who study shark behaviour.” t World’s Deadliest Towns will premiere every Tuesday beginning Oct 11 at 9pm on Discovery Channel (Astro channel 551) with encores every Wednesday at midnight, 8am and 2pm.

We hope to continue this initiative to focus on youth development which is in line with our brand,” Seri Pacific Hotel Kuala Lumpur director of operations Peter Padman said. The event will be judged by three prominent personalities from the industry. They are Karyawan president Datuk Freddie Fernandez, evergreen singer Datuk David Arumugam and the award-winning songstress Francissca Peter. “To enter the competition, contestants must be above 18. We are not going to narrow down the competition into genres. We accept every type of music as long as it is original. Those who audition will be given eight minutes to wrap their performance,” said Fernandez. The most important rule in the competition is that contestants must be either Malaysian citizens or are permanent residents. Only a group comprising three to eight will be accepted in the competition. Anything less or more than the given numbers will not be considered. To enter the competition, interested bands will have to bring their own hand instruments and keyboards as the organisers will only be providing basic equipment such as drums, bass, lead and keyboard amplifiers. “I will be looking for a band that

can deliver tight and polished performances. I am not going to be soft on the contestants. They will have to earn their title if they are really passionate about music and serious about it,” Francissca said. Each week, two best bands will be selected to go to the grand finale which will be on Jan 22, 2012. The champion will walk away with a cash prize of

RM3,000, while the first runnerup will take home RM2,000. The third prize winner will win RM1,000. The top groups might also get the opportunity to record an original single. The winner will be entitled to a contract to perform at Seri Pacific Hotel. For more info, call Rudy at 03-40425555 or 03-40494350 and email at asha@ seripacific.com — By CHE'AZ

14 lifestyle One liners for quick fixes By che'az cheaz@mmail.com.my Title: Mark McKeon's Life Tips Author: Mark McKeon Publisher: Advantage Quest Publication Rating: 7/10 A LOT of times, when people advise and motivate others, they believe they are offering help, but in reality, they are not really doing anyone any favours at all. This is because people with predicaments in life don’t really want to listen to sermons or lectures no matter how well intentioned they may be. The true desire to solving a problem comes from the inside. That impetus is called self motivation. Only self motivation would compel a person to want to change their perspective from unsure or negative to positive. Of course, there are lots of motivational books out there that can give solutions to life's crises but getting through those hundreds and hundreds of pages would be a problem in itself.

The Malay Mail Tuesday 4 october, 2011

Non-fiction

1. A Doctor in the House: The Memoirs of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad 2. The Power of X: Enter the 10 Gods by Joey Yap 3. I Moved Your Cheese: For Those Who Refuse to Live as Mice in Someone Else's Maze by Deepak Malhotra

Fiction

McKeon believes the key lies in getting those resolutions across in as quick and short a manner as possible, which makes 's Life Tips the perfect solution since it offers invaluable pearls of wisdom in bite-size and easyto-digest format. Laid out as a compilation of 100 tips in short sentences, it can zip up one’s enthusiasm to bring about that much-needed change in life in a jiffy. What’s unusual about McKeon's style of motivation is that it emphasises ways to become a better person, all through the use of one liners

sorted into chapters that talk about everyday things like handling stress or getting irritated or making decisions. Best of all, the phrases are infused with humour — no boring plodding on and on — and every insight offered can be put into practice straightaway. It's a thoroughly emjoyable read and all in all, this book would be a wise choice for readers who want a different point of view or quick fix to life’s dilemmas but do not have time to delve deep or hunt far and wide for solutions.

losing ranking points because of his struggles on and off the course. Since his private life unravelled in sensational fashion at the end of 2009 and he tried to repair his crumbling marriage, Woods has been a shadow of

the dominant player he once was. It has been just over three years since Woods clinched the last of his 14 major titles and he has not competed on the PGA Tour since missing the cut at the PGA Championship

Wozniacki feels Li Na's pain

CAROLINE WOZNIACKI (pic) may not have won a Grand Slam but the top seed at the China Open says she knows what Roland Garros winner Li Na is going through after a humiliating first round exit in Beijing. Home idol Li was bundled out in straight sets at the weekend by qualifier Monica Niculescu of Romania, earning the wrath of China's tennis fans. With constant carping at her lack of a major title despite holding WTA No 1 honours for last year, Dane Wozniacki can understand what her Chinese rival must be facing. "It's not pressure, it's just tough," Wozniacki, 21, said yesterday after advancing in a 3-6, 6-0, 7-5 win over Czech Lucie Hradecka. "There are so many girls out there playing great tennis at the moment. "They always want to play their best tennis against you

because they know they have to beat you." Li's breakthrough earlier this year at the French Open — where she became the first Chinese to win a singles Grand Slam — has made the 29-year-old "huge" at home, Wozniacki said. But Li's form has dipped spectacularly since Paris, and it hit a new low on Sunday in Beijing, to the horror of the vocal home support and hundreds of millions of Netizens, who gave her a rough time on Internet message boards. "I'm sure when she looks back on the season she's very proud and very happy. I don't think she's looking at the Internet too much and reading about herself — at least I don't," said Wozniacki. "The added sponsorship, it's just a plus. It's nice for her to know that once she stops playing tennis she's set, she can do what she wants." — AFP

THE move to hold the Bahrain Grand Prix next April, after its cancellation following antigovernment protests in March this year, is the Formula 1 of arrogance. Bahrain is out of place in an event that brings the world together. The world disapproves of Bahrain's jailing last week of 20 doctors who dared to treat protesters injured in those prodemocracy riots. Thirteen doctors were jailed for 15 years for crimes against the State while seven other medical professionals received sentences of between five and 10 years. A special tribunal, set up during the emergency rule that followed the protests, imprisoned the medics and it sparked worldwide condemnation. Their crime: treating the victims of the vicious attacks by the Saudi and Al Khalifa forces in March; and "forcibly" occupying a hospital.

Comment by FRANKIE D’CRUZ frankie@mmail.com.my

Formula 1 relies on the brilliance of medics across the world and race teams should stand shoulder-to-shoulder with these professionals and snub Bahrain. One should be mortified of joining the motoring circus in a State that shows appalling contempt for the medical profession. Sadly, there are no howls of anger among Formula 1 drivers and teams over the imprisonment of the medics. Regrettably, there are no impassioned debates over the grotesque failures of an influential sport to boycott a vicious regime. Rather, the main talking point in the sport now is the worry that Formula 1 teams have to pay tax when they go to India for the first time next year. Truth is, countries need

Formula 1 more than Formula 1 needs them and cancelling the event would be a huge blow to the Bahraini authorities. The Grand Prix matters to this Gulf State as the nation attempts to establish its importance and voice on the international stage. It's part of foreign policy as well. Promoter Bernie Ecclestone (pic) is skilful at persuading people to dance at the click of a finger. Disappointingly, he appears unmoved. But that's to be expected from a man who has been quick to exploit the desire for nations such as Bahrain to use sport to promote their international credentials. This year's season-opener on March 13 in Bahrain was cancelled because the streets were bursting with thousands of pro-democracy protesters,

30 dead bodies, hundreds of wounded and 1,000 troops from Saudi Arabia drafted in to crush the rebellion. For Ecclestone, that was an easy decision to make. Now's the real test. Personally, I feel Formula 1 should not go to Bahrain. The teams need to be audacious, show some courage — and say NO.

Klang meet gets global nod

THE Asia Pacific Merdeka Singles, Mixed Pairs and Triples Indoor Bowls Championship has been elevated to a World Invitational tournament. This announcement was made by Malaysia Lawn Bowls Federation (MLBF) president Tun Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid at the opening ceremony of the 6th Asia Pacific championship at the Bayuemas Indoor Bowls Stadium, in Klang yesterday. Ahmad Sarji said it was high time the championship elevated its status. "The support from Asia Pacific has been tremendous

since the inauguration of the championship since 2006 where we have had no less than ten countries competing," said Ahmad Sarji. "But the time has come for the championship to give better competition to countries in this region and becoming a World Championship will elevate the standard of competition." There are 44 member countries affiliated to the World Lawn Bowls Federation (WLBF) but Ahmad Sarji hopes to see at least 32 countries compete next year. Invitations will be sent to get participation

from countries from Asia, Asia Pacific, Europe, Africa and the United States. "We will be writing to the WLBF to seek their sanction and include it into their calendar." Ahmad Sarji said the prize money offered could well be increased but the championship could just be limited to Men and Women Singles and Mixed Pairs. Currently the Asia Pacific Championship also has the Triples. The tournament offers a total of US$50,000 (RM160,450) in prize money — the highest offered in a championship.

The countries competing are Australia, Brunei, Canada, China, Fiji, Hong Kong, India, Macau, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia. Canada, however, pulled out at the eleventh hour due to "unforeseen circumstances". Among the notable bowlers include local stars Safuan Said and Muhammad Hizlee Abdul Rais (Malaysia), Aron Sheriff and Nathan Rice (Australia) and Shanon Mcllroy (New Zealand). The quarterfinal and semifinal stages will be on Friday and the final on Saturday.

Fullback Byrne believes they can be champions WALES fullback Lee Byrne says they are in great shape ahead of the knockout stages and believes that Warren Gatland's side are capable of going on to lift the trophy. The Welsh opened their campaign with a narrow defeat by champions South Africa but ultimately cruised into the last eight after subsequent victories over Samoa, Namibia and Fiji. Next up is Ireland this weekend for a place in the semifinals and while Byrne is in no doubt about the threat posed by a side who have already beaten Australia, he believes Wales can come out on top. On whether Wales can go all the way, Byrne said: "I would probably say so. We know Ireland played very well to beat Australia, and we will give them respect, but we will give it our best to try to go as far or further than any Welsh team have done in the World Cup. "The hard work has been

The boys are really enjoying being at the tournament and we have got high ambitions. We are confident about our prospects against Ireland. It's just a case of seeing what happens on the day." Wales seem to be improving with each passing game,

with youngsters such as Leigh Halfpenny and George North really coming into their own. Indeed, Byrne believes the latter could end up as one of the stars of the tournament. "George has now scored nine tries in 11 internationals, which says it all," he said. "He has got something special. He's big, physical and is also exceptionally quick. His passing and skills are good as well, so he's got it all. George has played more games for

REAL MADRID striker Gonzalo Higuain (pic) admitted his impressive hattrick in the 4-0 away win over Espanyol on Sunday was just what he needed to boost his confidence. The other goal for Real was scored by Jose Callejon. Higuain, who recently returned from a long spell on the sidelines through injury, started the game in place of Frenchman Karim Benzema who is now struggling with a groin problem, and was delighted with how the game went. "I played a full match and I'm happy about that as it will help me reach optimum form," Higuain told Gol TV. "I suffered a lot coming back from injury. I recovered and I needed a game like that. I was looking forward to playing this well and scoring again. The victory was Real's third

SOUTH AFRICA head coach Peter de Villiers believes the absence of Frans Steyn or the "Rocket Launcher" will change Australia's approach to the breakdown in their quarterfinal clash on Sunday. Losing Steyn to a shoulder injury means the Springboks will no longer have a specialist long-range goal kicker in their side. De Villiers said it could prompt the opposition to push the limits of the law when competing for the ball at the tackle area. "Steyn is a big blow to us, but then again if the breakdown is there (in range where Steyn used to convert penalties) they will definitely target it more, but we will just have to see that we play a territory game," he said. De Villiers also reckons losing Steyn to injury was a far more detrimental blow to South Africa's World Cup ambitions than the loss of Dan Carter may be to New Zealand. "I think it (the injury to Steyn) is much bigger," said De Villiers. "He was one of those stars

to us. And coming to the World Cup, he came as a fullback and we were forced to use him at centre and then he just he showed us what his value is as a player and a team man." Steyn was far more physical in midfield than any of his predecessors and De Villiers hoped he could fulfil that role for the duration of the tournament — as he did at the 2007 World Cup in France. "We are going to miss him, definitely," said De Villiers. He said the battle at the breakdown between the Springboks' Heinrich Brussow and Wallaby fetcher David Pocock will have a big impact on the final result. "Australia are good at breakdown time and that is where they play from when they get turnovers, so we will have to look after our ball carefully and try to secure and put phases together and make it difficult for them. "We have two of the best players that play to the ball in world rugby on the field this weekend so it is going to be a great contest," he said.

GIORGIO CHIELLINI praised Juventus manager Antonio Conte's role in their 2-0 win over champions and bitter rivals AC Milan at Juventus Arena on Sunday. Conte decided to use Chiellini at leftback with Leonardo Bonucci starting alongside Andrea Barzagli in the heart of defence, and the former Livorno star feels the defensive reshuffle paid off. "Conte wanted us to be more physical in defence. We worked on Saturday afternoon and I realised I was going to play there (leftback)," Chiellini told Juventus Channel. "Paolo De Ceglie was not well and couldn't play, but Bonucci was good and could help us in defence. There was a desire to spend a magical evening. We ended up exhausted, but going stronger than our Milanese opponents." The win puts Juventus on top of the table with 11 points from five games — six points ahead of Milan. Midfielder Claudio Marchisio believes Juventus deserved to beat Milan. It was the Italian's late showing, in which he scored a double, that won all three points for Juventus, who had dominated the match from start to finish.

"We believed in winning until the end and this showed in our first goal," Marchisio told Sky Sport Italia. "What matters is winning and we never lacked motivation. We started well, but it was not easy to win. "However, let's take this win now, we deserved it, the stadium deserved it. We never gave up and I am delighted. "We are always working to reach the top so we can challenge teams like Udinese, Roma, Milan, Napoli, Inter Milan and Lazio." Juventus will play Chievo away from home after the international break. Attacker Mirko Vucinic, meanwhile, played down expectations at the club after the win over Milan. He is not getting carried away and stressed that it is still too soon to talk about lifting the title. "Wining the Scudetto? I'm keeping my feet on the ground. We are aware of our strength and we're top of the table now. However, it won't be easy to stay up there," he told Tuttosport. Vucinic is pleased with his performance against Milan and underlined the significance of the win. "I felt very well out there, especially after the final whistle. We will celebrate this important victory."

LIVERPO OL'S Stewart Downing admitted the Reds are delighted Andy Carroll is finally off the mark this season, and hopes his teammate will now go from strength to strength. "Andy's off the mark now and we're all delighted for him," Downing said. "Even without scoring, he's been doing really well for us. "But getting a goal is a real bonus and for it to happen in the derby is extra special for him. He deserved it for his all round play and it was a great finish." Downing continued his praise of Carroll saying, "Andy is a quality striker and I'm sure he'll build on this. It was such an important goal as this was a big win for us." But while he is happy with his first goal of the season, Carroll insists he is concentrating on maintaining his level of performance in the tough games ahead. "We have been doing well,” he added. "Obviously there was a blip against Tottenham but the lads have been keeping together and we showed that spirit in the derby. "Scoring against Everton and beating them at their

Ancelotti wants EPL return "The goal is for everyone really, Kenny (Dalglish), the other lads and the fans. Everyone who has stood by me," he told the club’s official website. Carroll netted the crucial opening goal for Dalglish's men with just under 20 minutes remaining to cap a powerful display at Goodison Park. After a disapp ointing start to the Reds' season, the former Magpie was keen to thank all those who supported him in difficult times. "I had been speaking with Jose (Enrique) and I told him that I fancied getting my first of the season here. Before the game, I thought 'this is the day'," said Carroll. "This is by far the highlight of my time here, easily. It was a good result and it was nice to get on the score sheet. It felt great. The lads played well and deserved it." He added, "I just remember Bellers (Craig Bellamy) running down the wing, Jose on the overlap and putting a great ball in. Dirk (Kuyt) let it run and I was lucky enough to finish it." — Agencies

COVERCIANO

CESARE PRANDELLI warned there would be no let up for Italy in the Euro 2012 qualifiers against Serbia and Northern Ireland despite his side having already qualified for the finals. Italy have booked their spot for the tournament in Poland and Ukraine next year as Group C winners but both their opponents are still in contention for second place and a

not know if he would call up a replacement. France lead Group D by a point from Bosnia with just the two home qualifiers left. Regulars Philippe Mexes, Yoann Gourcuff, Abou Diaby and Guillaume Hoarau were not included in the squad announced last week because of long-standing injuries. On Sunday, Bacary Sagna pulled out after breaking his leg playing for Arsenal.

A host of players in the squad are carrying injuries and may be doubtful for one, or both, of the Stade de France encounters which will decide France's fate. Talismanic winger Franck Ribery and midfielder Blaise Matuidi have knocks along with defenders Eric Abidal and Laurent Koscielny. "It is part of the job of the national coach," Blanc added.

"Players are subjected to a tough regime with (club) matches every three or four days and muscle injuries can multiply." But Blanc tried to remain optimistic. "We hope to have Franck back, possibly as early as Friday. Eric is very important to us. I really hope he will be fit to play." A decision on a possible replacement call up for

Benzema depends on whether Blanc sticks to his usual plan of having one up front or switches to a 4-4-2 given Albania are likely to play defensively on Friday, the coach added. France may try to attack more than normal as they need to beat Albania to guarantee they stay in front of Bosnia ahead of the final showdown with the Balkan side. — Reuters

No let up for Italy, warns Prandelli spot in the playoffs. "These are not friendlies but official matches. We have to play our best and respect fair play," Prandelli said at the team's training base on the outskirts of Florence yesterday. Prandelli has opted not to switch around his squad apart from 2006 World Cup-winning Juventus centreback Andrea Barzagli making his return after

three years, along with Atalanta midfielder Luca Cigarini, who was last called up in October last year but did not play. "To change the balance wouldn't suit, it's better to maintain a certain continuity," explained Prandelli. "In Belgrade (on Friday) against Serbia it will be a beautiful match. We're going to try and play our game. As it won't

be 'necessary' to get points to qualify, we don't have to calculate." He added that Napoli defenders Paolo Cannavaro and Hugo Campagnaro would not necessarily be part of his future plans despite shining for the Serie A side. "It's a question of good sense," said Prandelli. "I don't have much time to

work. We have to get used to playing with a four-man defence to give us a sense of security. "Unfortunately, that doesn't work in favour of Cannavaro and Campagnaro, who have played for the past two or three years as a three." Italy host Northern Ireland in Pescara next Wednesday. — AFP

CARLO ANCELOTTI (pic) has made it clear he would love to return to the Premier League, but only to coach a "top club". The former AC Milan boss has been out of work since being sacked by Chelsea but after recharging his batteries, Ancelotti is keen to give it another go in the English top flight. The 52-year-old Italian said: "I have a strong will to remain in England. For a coach, this is the ideal country. "But I would only consider coaching top clubs, including Tottenham and Liverpool."

London alliance Arsenal, Spurs unite following ugly chants

ARSENAL and Tottenham Hotspur put their intense onfield rivalry to one side yesterday by taking the unusual step of issuing a joint statement condemning the chants of some of their supporters at Sunday’s north London derby at White Hart Lane. Arsenal fans were offensive towards their former striker Emmanuel Adebayor who now plays for Spurs, mocking the gun attack on his Togo team bus during last year’s African Nations Cup tournament in Angola which left three members of the Togo party dead. The Arsenal fans chanted: “It should have been you, it should have been you, killed in Angola, it should have been you.” Spurs fans targeted Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger with their own offensive insult as they have done for much of the last decade. Spurs manager Harry Redknapp was scathing of the Arsenal fans afterwards, describing the chants at Adebayor as “disgusting” and Spurs confirmed yesterday that several fans from the home and away sections of the crowd were ejected during the game. “How do you chant something like that. You can’t be right mentally. There were

kids up there,” Redknapp said. Wenger said he had heard the chants and added: “We respect everybody and want to be respected too.” The statement, issued on their websites read: “Both clubs were extremely disappointed to hear the chants from supporters at yesterday’s game. “Neither club tolerates foul language, racist chanting, homophobic chanting or any anti-social behaviour from their supporters. “We shall be working closely with each other to identify the individuals involved.” A Tottenham spokesman said Spurs, in line with club policy, would ban for life any fan found guilty of offensive chanting during the match which they won 2-1. Despite yesterday’s united front, it was not all harmonious between the clubs immediately after Spurs’ victory. Tottenham’s assistant coach Clive Allen described Wenger as “two-bob” — a derogatory put down — for refusing to shake his hand after the final whistle. Wenger replied: “Nothing happened. I shook hands with Harry and (assistant) Kevin Bond. How many hands do I have to shake?” — Reuters

WINNERS TAKE ALL: Blake (left) with Bolt celebrating after winning the 4x100m event at Daegu last month

JAMAICAN sprint kings Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake have both been shortlisted for the 2011 World Athlete-of-the-Year award, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) announced yesterday. Blake won the world championships 100m title in Daegu last month when his world record-holding compatriot was disqualified for a false start. And the duo sprinted to landmark times at the Diamond League last month, Bolt running the fastest 100m this year and Blake the second fastest 200m in history. Britain’s Mo Farah has also made

the cut after the 28-year-old won world gold in the 5,000m in South Korea and claimed silver in a closely fought 10,000m. Also included are Kenya’s marathon world record holder Patrick Makau, middle-distance runner David Rudisha, German discus thrower Robert Harting, Japanese hammer thrower Koji Murofushi and Grenadian sprinter Kirani James. American triple-jumper Christian Taylor and compatriot Jesse Williams, who competes in the high jump, also made the shortlist. The women’s list includes three Russians — world heptathlete champion Tatyana Chernova, high

jumper Anna Chicherova and javelin thrower Maria Abakumova — American duo Lashinda Demus and Carmelita Jeter, New Zealand shotputter Valerie Adams and Jamaican sprinter Veronica Campbell-Brown. Kenyan long distance runner Vivian Cheruiyot, Botswanan 400m runner Amantle Montsho, who won her country’s first gold medal at the world Championships, and Australian sprint hurdler Sally Pearson complete the shortlist. The 10 male and 10 female candidates have been selected by an IAAF panel of eight experts with the winners to be announced on Nov 12. — AFP
