Beware the Lat n-na l ruse

FROM stealing luggages and personal belongings at hotels and airports, Latin American criminals are now preying on bank customers. The ploy is simple: a nail, such as this one, is placed under the tyre of a vehicle belonging to a bank customer who has just made a big withdrawal. When the victim drives off, the criminal would ‘alert’ him of his punctured tyre. On the pretext of helping, the criminals would grab the money left inside the car while the victim changes the tyre. CAUGHT ON CAMERA: These sequence shots show a woman and a man, believed to be Latin American, going into a coffee shop in a hotel before leaving with valuables, including a purse, which the victims left on their tables while they went to get food from the buffet counter. The ‘Latino’ criminals, who were smartly dressed, coolly walked out of the hotel minutes later. These pictures were published by The Malay Mail in 2009.

Cool bank robbers nabbed IN what was being described as a "slick" bank heist routine, KL police smashed a four-man robbery gang targeting cash deposit machines. Two of the members would first disable the banking devices, using coins, crushed pieces of paper or credit cards, by masquerading as customers. As technicians arrived to repair the faulty equipment, the duo covered their faces with a mask and a full-face helmet, respectively, and one of them would whip out a handgun. While the armed robber pointed his revolver at those present, including the security guards, his partner orders the hapless technicians to clean out the machines of cash. Once the 'transaction' was completed, both walked out to two accomplices waiting on motorbikes for a quick getaway. The quartet, aged 20 to 26, had so far robbed three banks this way in Kuala Kubu Baru and Tanjung Malim in Selangor, and Jalan Segambut in KL. In the latest case early last month, they got away with RM61,000. Their luck, however, ran out when City police traced the gang and, last Wednesday, detained three members at their Batu Caves home. City police CID chief Datuk Ku Chin Wah said in the Segambut holdup on Sept 10, the suspects, all locals and unemployed, also seized a bank guard's revolver.

Students stressed out Teachers to help them cope with academic pressures

STRESS levels among students nationwide is on a "high". A seven-month survey by the Health Ministry reveals. Minster Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai (pic) said from 6,540 students surveyed, 4.8 per cent of them experienced stress, 17.1 per cent extreme anxiety and 5.2 per cent suffered manic depression. "Based on our survey-cumstudy on students from six secondary schools nation wide, we found their stress levels were "quite high." "We are concerned about this. We will train teachers to help students cope with pressure."

By ANDREW SAGAYAM andrew@mmail.com.my

Liow said students with symptoms of stress, anxiety or depression will be given appropriate assistance including counseling and mental health coping skills. “There are factors, some common, which led children to experience stress such as pressure to do well in examinations, problems at home and pressure from schools to excel," Liow said. "The ministry wants to help students cope with stress. A total of 2,345 students underwent mental health intervention

and 279 teachers were trained to identify and handle their emotional, behavioural and mental problems." he said. Liow said this after chairing

Consumers not doing enough CONSUMERS in Malaysia are not complaining enough, it seems. From a daily average of 50 calls received by the National Consumer Complaints Centre (NCCC), more than half are not followed through by consumers themselves. The centre recorded 34,381 actionable complaints from consumers last year, but the figure could have been higher by at least 20 per cent. Because of consumers' nonaction, coupled with lax transparency by companies, NCCC's overall statistics are affected, said its dispute resolution and policy review senior manager M. Matheevani (pic). "Some called seeking advice but they don't take the next step as they feel their complaints are unimportant or they aren't aware of their rights," she told The Malay Mail at the 5th Complaintfest 2011 yesterday. "But complaints received by the centre are recorded, presented to the companies and used in our statistical reports." Matheevani said except for urgent cases, complaints are treated with the same level of priority. The centre also tries to help the poor and the disadvantaged, such as those who are illiterate. She said if the complaints received are less than 200 for a particular industry, the centre does not single out the industry in their report but instead lists

them under Quality of Products and Services. Six out of seven industries with the highest number of complaints, in ascending order, were Housing, Public Transport, Automobile, Financial Institutions, Hire Purchase and Quality of Products and Services industries, with more than 2,000 complaints each. However, 3,102 out of the 34,381 complaints received last year were against the Communications and Multi-media industry. These include telecommunication companies, broadband Internet service providers and subscription based television. Matheevani said this was due to rising complexity and packages offered by these companies, sometimes without infrastructure or systems in place to back them up. "The Communications and Multi-media Act is also too lenient," she said, but that overall, Malaysia has among the best consumer protection laws in Asia. When asked how the centre can do more for consumers, Matheevani said the centre is currently under-funded and under-staffed. "NC C C is ab out improving industry practices and law reforms by dealing with individual cases. Despite

our shortcomings, we are still able to resolve a substantial amount of complaints, with a majority of them in favour of consumers. "However, the centre needs more support and feedback from industries, the government and the public. Currently, our sole source of funds comes from Fomca," she said. From a financial angle, after examining over 138,000 consumer complaints covering 24 sectors since 2006, the centre estimates the collective losses last year amounted to RM244,301,900.

the Mental Health Promotion Advisory Council meeting at the ministry yesterday. Results of the survey from a pilot project, called Healthy Mind in Handling Stress Among Schoolchildren Programme, was conducted by the council from March to last month Schools involved in the seven month survey were SMK Datuk Haji Ahmad B ad aw i, S eb erang Prai, Penang, SMK Simpang Bekoh, Jasin, SM Sains Teluk Intan, SM St Michael, Penampang, Maktab Rendah Sains Mara, Gemenchih and SMJK Katholik, Petaling Jaya. The outcome of the study

showed 13.1 per cent of 6,540 students had coping skills, 48.3 per cent average, 37.7 per cent poor and 0.9 per cent bad. Liow said the pilot project will be introduced to all schools followed by the intervention programme. “The pilot study showed a need for us to conduct it throughout the nation. We will start this immediately while at the same time train counselors." Meanwhile, the ministry has also begun mental health screening in stages at health clinics since June to identify early mental health problems among the public.

Do you know your basic rights? UNDER trying times, a little knowledge of your consumer rights can save you a lot of money. Nat i o n a l C o n s u m e r Complaints Centre (NCCC) dispute resolution and policy review senior manager M. Matheevani said consumers are often unaware of the basic rights provided to them under Malaysian laws, such as: ● If you have paid one third of your vehicle loan, they'll need to obtain a court order to repossess it. " T he Hi re P u rchas e (Amendment) Act 2010 effective on June 15, 2010, as a result of NCCC complaints, states that in the event a consumer has paid over one-third of the vehicle's total cost, a court order must be obtained to repossess the car," said Matheevani. Other amendments state repossession can only take place after you missed payment for two consecutive months, followed by a 21-day notice issued by the loaner. Any person involved in repossession activities must also obtain a permit from a Controller of Consumer Affairs.

● You can probably still get a refund even if they have a 'No Refund' policy "Company policies are not above the law," said Matheevani. Companies that practice a 'No-Refund' policy are in direct violation of Section 46 of Consumer Protection Act 1999 regardless of whether they display 'Goods sold are not returnable' or 'No Refunds' around premises or on receipts. ● Your gym membership contract does not entitle them to charge you for a whole year "All ser vices with a schedule can be terminated verbally, though it is better to do so in writing," said Matheevani. Consumers who signed up for gym memberships and other services provided on a schedule, referred to as Future Services, should read up on Section 17 of the Consumer Protection Act. In the event of termination, suppliers can only charge five per cent of the contract price, the cost of goods the consumer is keeping and the portion of the full contract price, representing services received by the consumer.

'Restricted residents' freed Home Ministry will also cancel 200 warrants

THE remaining 125 detainees under the Restricted Residence Act 1933 will be released immediately. The Home Ministry will also cancel more than 200 warrants yet to be served. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak made these announcements during the second reading of the Restricted Residence (Repeal) Bill 2011 in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday. He told the House the government's decision to repeal the Restricted Residence Act was made based on current wants and needs as the law was outdated and no longer relevant. This was based on two main factors — the principles of democracy and justice, as well as the development of information and communication technology (ICT) and urbanisation. "Action against those who commit crimes must be based

on current laws, abiding by the principle that any punishment be meted out by the court after taking into account all evidence, according to universal principles," said Najib. He said the government believed the Royal Malaysian Police can gather evidence scientifically and systematically to enable prosecution. He also said the abolition of the Act would not affect orders issued and action or proceedings taken before its enforcement and would have no monetary implications. Earlier, Najib told the House the core of the National Political Transformation Programme, announced during his 48th Malaysia Day address last month and which included the proposed abolition of the three Emergency proclamations in operation — the

Internal Security Act 1960 (ISA), Restricted Residence Act and Banishment Act 1959 — was to achieve a modern, progressive nation with a functioning democracy. It was also to balance the needs of national security and individual freedom by taking into account the "complex nature of national diversity and the threat of global violence, following the Sept 11, 2001, terrorist attacks". Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein told reporters later the order for release had been signed yesterday. "The process is that it has to be served onto them first by the OCPDs, I believe, at the very latest, by tomorrow," he said. Meanwhile, InspectorGeneral of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Ismail Omar said police were ready and had put a framework in place to implement this.

Action against police personnel who fired tear gas into hospital THE Home Ministry has promised to take action against the police personnel who fired tear gas and water cannons into the compound of Tung Shin Hospital during the Bersih 2.0 illegal assembly on July 9. Its minister, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, said that since it involved a breach of the police's standard operating prosedure (SOP), the action would be meted out internally. At the same time, action would be taken against those who took part in the illegal assembly, he told reporters at the Parliament lobby. Hishammuddin said police were not the only party to be blamed. For the rest, the matter would be decided by the Attorney-General's Chambers for further action.

Yes, we were once colonised, says Muhyiddin HOPING to end conflicting theories put forth by historians and leaders on the colonisation issue, the Dewan Rakyat was told yesterday it was the government's stand that Malaysia was once colonised. Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin (pic) said this when responding to a supplementary question by Azmin Ali (PKR-Gombak), who had urged him to state the government's stand on the matter "once and for all" to end confusion among students who would be sitting for their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations soon. Muhyiddin, who is also the Education Minister, said

History lessons had taught that the British Resident Commissioners in Malaya had served as royal advisers. "In this context, the advice of the commissioner must be accepted. That means, there was no freedom but, instead, we had to do what we were told. In that context, we had to fight for our country," he said. Muhyuddin stressed that that was why the contributions of the first Prime Mi n iste r, Tu n ku Ab du l Rahman Putra Al-Haj, and those of other national leaders should not be dismissed. He told the House that Malaysians knew the country had been colonised, adding

"the yearly Merdeka celebrations cannot have been in vain". Muhyiddin said thes e were historical facts and the matter should no longer be debated.

PR pledges 'Prosperity for all' THE Pakatan Rakyat (PR) unvei le d its a lter nat ive Budget 2012 yesterday, two days before the government announces its Budget proposals. Themed "Prosperity for all", PR is emphasising empowerment and opportunities and dignity for Malaysians within a financially and environmentally sustainable framework. PA S c e nt r a l c om m it tee member Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad (pic) said the alternative Budget would create growth for all by providing policies aimed at uplifting 60 per cent of Malaysian households which earned less than RM3,000 monthly. "We will maintain expenditure at RM220 billion next year but will spend the people's money in a more responsible, accountable and

effective manner," he said. "The deficit will be lowered to 4.4 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) from six per cent in 2011." Dzulkefly said a major plan was to set a minimum wage for civil servants. "We will prioritise policy initiatives aimed at raising the income levels of households and skills of the workforce," he said. "While recognising wages can only grow sustainably with productivity gains, it is also a reality that the government's wage-setting mechanism has become dysfunctional." He said PR proposed a minimum wage of RM1,100 a month to be implemented

with holistic labour market reforms. The other key imperatives included immediately assisting Malaysians in times of economic uncertainty and ensuring sustainable financing of government coffers while reducing the deficit.

“ There is a spin that it lo oks as t houg h t he standard operating procedure of the police is at fault. This is just one incident,” he said. "The fact that they (the Opposition) are looking at one particular incident, to

me, is like making a mountain out of a molehill." Home Ministry secretarygeneral Tan Sri Mahmood Adam had reportedly said the policemen involved would be referred to the police disciplinary committee for action.

INDONESIAN immigrants, both legal and illegal, led the number of foreign workers registered under the first phase of the 6P legalisation programme. Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said Immigration Department records showed 1.05 million Indonesians had registered by the Aug 31 deadline, of which 405,321 were here legally. Bangladeshi immigrants comprised the second largest number at 400,700; Myanmar nationals at 257,583; Nepalese at 255,054; and Indians at 107,427.

Men outnumbered women, representing 75 per cent, or 977,140, of those registered. Hishammuddin also told the Dewan Rakyat that by the Aug 31 deadline, 2.32 million immigrants had registered through the biometric system and 56 per cent were here illegally. He said that through the exercise, the government was able to compile data on illegal immigrants, while the use of the biometric system allowed for better monitoring and enforcement of foreign workers and national security control.

"We can address the falsification of identity and travel documents through biometric registration as fingerprints cannot be falsified," he said. Hishammuddin said the pressing need for foreign workers in the economic sectors could also be speedily addressed, without the need to bring in new workers. To a supplementary question by Datuk Ismail Mohamed Said (BN-Kuala Krau), he said the names of 61 agents found to have tampered with biometrics machines during the registration exercise would be released later.

Latino crooks nailed Syndicate used Good Samaritan trick to dupe bank customers

By G. PRAKASH prakash@mmail.com.my

FROM luggage and jewellery thefts, and luxury house burglaries, Latin American crooks have turned their sights on robbing bank customers after withdrawing large amounts of money — just by using a nail. City police were probing an international racket believed to be involved in similar cases in Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea and Vietnam, said its CID chief, Datuk Ku Chin Wah. “We have so far arrested five male Latin Americans whom we believe are involved in this syndicate.” Police are also looking for two female accomplices and eight other Latin Americans, believed to be involved in at least five cases in the city, with a loot totalling RM600,000 in cash. The suspects are from Peru, Guatemala and Venezuela. Explaining their modus operandi, Ku said the suspects, working in a group of five, would scout banks. “One of them would be a woman, the only one who will enter the bank.” He said the female members would usually dressed in baju kurung and headscarf to allay any suspicion on their activity.

KAJANG

TRICKS OF THE TRADE: Ku (right) and other officers inspecting the handphones and laptops recovered from the Ampang house

“They would usually observe ATM machines and bank counters looking for customers taking out large amounts of money.” Her accomplices outside would also spot potential targets. “They would be looking for rich people entering the bank and also see where potential victims parked their cars. If a target entered the bank, one them would inform the woman inside,” said Ku.

When the victim was about to leave, she would notify her accomplices who would place a specially mounted nail under the car tyre of their target. Ku said as soon as the victim tried to drive off, the tyre would be punctured by the nail and one of the Latin Americans would inform the car owner about it. “On the pretext of helping, the suspects would wait for the right

moment to steal the money the victim had just cashed out from the bank. They usually took the money kept in the car when the victim was changing the tyre.” Ku said a six-men special task force that had been tracking the suspects for a month got a break when two male suspects were arrested near a bank in Jalan Ipoh on Sept 30. “We believed they were in the midst of targeting a victim.” Police subsequently raided a house in Ampang where three other male suspects were detained, and four laptops, a knife, eight handphones, three branded watches and a digital camera were seized. The male suspects, aged 40 to 56 years, are from Peru and Venezuela, while their female accomplice, who is still at large, is from Guatemala. Police are also still looking for eight Latin American men and two women from the same syndicate. Ku said: “We believe the syndicate works in three groups and the other groups are operating in Penang and Johor.” The five detained are also involved in a robbery case at a café in Ampang. “One of the suspects has an arrest warrant for not appearing in Ampang court, after he was released on police bail.”

Pyromaniac burglars arrested

WITH more than 30 house break-ins and robberies under their belt, the three men were no strangers to criminal activity. However, they had an unusual calling card — they would torch the furniture and other items of some of the houses they burgled. The men, in their 20s and 30s, have been terrorising Kajang, Cheras and Balakong area since April this year. Selangor deputy police chief SAC Datuk A.Thaiveegan said: “Acting on a tip-off, a

police team went to a medium-low cost apartment in Kajang and nabbed the trio.” The suspects were also equipped with house breakin tools, and armed with knives, machetes and a fake firearm. Investigations also found that the suspects had a weird ritual of setting ablaze some of the items at the homes they had broken into. "Just for the fun of it, they would torch the couch, dining table or even curtains," he said.

Beware the man bearing 'cute' gifts

CLUBBERS are all too familiar with flower girls and snacks sellers out to make a quick buck out of them. But for some, a man bearing cute gift boxes is a welcome sight. Last Sunday, the police discovered why. Acting on a tip-off, Selangor

deputy police chief SAC Datuk A.Thaiveegan said the 52-yearold suspect, a metal scrap dealer by day, was nabbed at one of his nocturnal 'haunts'. “We waited for him at a nightspot in Taman Muda, Ampang, and found him holding a small gift box.”

He said further checks revealed 1,000 tablets of Erimin 5 pills inside the box. “After being questioned, the suspect brought police to his car where 42 more Erimin 5 tablets were found stashed inside, especially in the glove compartment.”

The finds were not the last as police were brought to the suspect’s rented home in Taman Lembah Maju where and 9,600 more Erimin 5 pills were seized. The total haul of 10,642 pills are believed to be worth RM266,000.

They've struck before THE Malay Mail had highlighted Latin American syndicates targeting hotel guests and making off with their belongings in 2008. There were also break-ins of high-end homes, where female syndicate members would ring the doorbell to find out if they were occupied or not. In July 2009, the Latinos struck again after laying low for almost a year. This time, posing as hotel guests or tour agents to target five-star hotel guests. On July 15 that year, a group of three to two males and a female accomplice made off with a luggage belonging to a guest whom they followed as their act was caught on CCTV. The syndicate also struck at hotel coffee houses and conference rooms, making off with laptops, digital cameras, purses, handbags and luggage. Earlier in April that year, Korean national Kevin Kee Bung Rhee, 46, lost his laptop, PDA and camera to a Latin American man when he was at the check-in counter of Petaling Jaya Hilton. There were also reports of Latin Americans involved in jewelery thefts. On July 6 last year, a tray of diamonds worth more than RM500,000 went missing from a jewellery shop during a sale in Ampang. They were taken out from the display counter believed to be by a group of South Americans who earlier requested to have a closer look at them. Last November, police arrested four suspects, aged 25 to 44, for a burglary in Ukay Heights. The suspects also revealed involvement in three other burglaries reported since last year.

BANDAR SUNWAY

Fiery end to pub tiff TWO rival gangs met by chance at a pub on neutral ground — and their 'Happy Hours' outing ended with 10 cars damaged, two of them in flames, on Sept 29. The incident started when members of two gangs from Bandar Kinrara and Bandar Sunway, respectively, went out for drinks and bumped into each other at the wateringhole in Petaling Jaya. An argument ensued between the two groups. S ai d S e l angor d e put y police chief SAC Datuk A.Thaiveegan: “The war of words that was supposed to have ended at the pub took a turn for the worse when the Bandar Sunway gang, which was leaving the pub, was followed by their Bandar Kinrara rivals.” The chase ended at a residential area in Jalan PJS 7/5 when a fight broke out among them, resulting in two cars torched, and eight others suffered damages to the windscreens and doors.

By AIZAT SHARIF aizat@mmail.com.my

Police were alerted of the fracas but the suspects fled the scene. On Sept 30, based on a public tip-off, police traced and apprehended three suspects in several houses in Subang Jaya. “The suspects, aged 26 and 31, were detained and they were believed have linked with the incident,” said Thaiveegan. Early yesterday morning, police, also acting on a tip-off, went to various locations in Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya and Puchong, and nabbed five more suspects. They have been remanded at the Selangor police contingent headquarters for further investigation under Section 148 of the Penal Code for possessing weapons or missiles at riot and Section 435 for mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to cause damage.

The Empire 'strikes' back Complex reopens after last week's gas explosion

BUSINESS at the Empire Shopping Gallery, rocked by a gas leak explosion last week, is slowly returning to normal. Checks by The Malay Mail yesterday showed offices were beginning to reopen after the complex was closed a week following the explosion on Sept 28. However, the 10-storey Empire Hotel and the fivestorey shopping mall remained closed. O n M o n d a y, E m p i r e Holdings issued a statement confirming 513 tenants had returned—139 from the Soho units and 374 from the office units. The remaining tenants were expected to return later. The complex comprises the Empire Tower, Empire Soho, Empire Hotel and the shopping mall. The temporary closure of Empire Tower and Soho was was to ensure the building was safe for occupation again.

By IKRAM ISMAIL Ikram@mmail.com.my

Empress Secret director Nigel Low, 23, whose business is based in Soho, said he was at the seventh floor of the building on the day of the explosion. "I was sleeping in the office when the explosion occurred, but I did not suspect anything amiss and continued sleeping because the fire alarm did not go off," he said. "We're re-opening for the first time today after the explosion. I do not know when our clients will come here as usual because vehicles have been prohibited from parking inside Empire Gallery and this would make it difficult for them to come here." Low said he was forced to park his car at Subang Parade mall and had to walk at least 300 metres to reach his office. An administrative staff, who

wished to be known as Rosa, said it was business as usual for her as she works with the building's service management. "I have b een working everyday since the explosion occurred. I have nothing to fear as I was informed the situation is improving," she said. An executive at a development company which operates from the office tower, Khatijah Ahmad, 26, said although they had resumed business yesterday, clients were still afraid to come to their office. "Most of our clients requested meetings to be held outside the office," said Khatijah who was on her first day of work after the explosion." While business owners and workers from Empire Office Tower and Soho had been allowed to enter their offices, retail shops in the Empire Shopping Mall remained closed

Council cracks the whip on errant motorists IN a crackdown on errant motorists, the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) towed away 12 cars and eight motorcycles along Jalan SS16/1 during a five-hour operation there yesterday. This was in response to complaints by residents of nearby Saujana Residency condominium that during peak hours, up to a hundred vehicles would be illegally parked on both sides of the road. On Tuesday, residents living at the condominium claimed the congestion had become

worse as more vehicles had been illegally parked. Saujana Residency Joint Management Building (JMB) chairman Marcus Tan claimed many complaints had been lodged to the council on the traffic problem but no action had been taken, until yesterday. Yesterday, the council's acting enforcement director, Ainol Salnee Salim said the 12 cars and eight motorcycles were towed away by five enforcement officers between 8.30am and 2pm.

Breathing new life into anti-smoking campaign TO deter cigarette smoking, the Health Ministry conducted a Nafas Baru (New Breath) campaign during the recent Ramadan. In a statement, the Health Ministry said Nafas Baru was in line with their longstanding Tak Nak Merokok campaign and involved the distribution and dissemination of anti-smoking material to the public. The ministry also said that Malaysia, as a signatory since 2005 to the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) — a legal tool developed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) — is bound to its 38 provisions covering the provisions for tobacco supply and control measures. "In a committed effort to abide by the provisions of the FCTC since its ratification six years ago, almost all the provisions have been or are in the process of being carried out by the government," said the ministry. "A study conducted over

the last five years showed that Malaysia is believed to have spent over RM3 billion per year treating just three tobacco-related illnesses, namely, heart disease, lung cancer, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease." Among the actions taken were the implementation of Malaysia Control of Tobacco Product Regulations 2004 which makes advertisements, sponsorships or promotions by tobacco companies illegal. Under the regulations, designated no-smoking areas are increased from time to time, and minors are prohibited from selling, possessing or smoking tobacco products. Other provisions enforced are ensuring that health and public policies are free from the influence of the tobacco industry, raising the price of tobacco and tobacco-related products in order to decrease demand for such items, and making it compulsory for

tobacco manufacturers to carry warning labels featuring gruesome results of smoking. The ministry also continually carries out educational campaigns through the mass media. Infolines and services in local health clinics and hospitals aimed at helping those addicted to smoking were also provided.

Also, interventions throughout all levels of the community and programmes specifically targeting school children have been regularly held. According to WHO statistics, more than five million people in the world will die from tobacco smoking-related illnesses this year. exposure to tobacco smoke. In the 20th century, smoking claimed 100 million lives nationwide. In the 21st century, the number of such casualties is estimated to reach one billion. A National Health and Morbidity Survey conducted in 2006 showed that 21.5 per cent, or roughly three million adults, in Malaysia are smokers.

"Twenty-six compounds were also issued to motorists for indiscriminate parking along Jalan SS16/1," Ainol said. "We issued warnings using a 'loud hailer' for motorists to remove their vehicles and we then issued compounds when no one turned up to drive them away." He said if people did not turn up within 45 minutes to remove vehicles after the first warning was issued, enforcement officers would tow vehicles to the council's depot.

Smoking fines reap RM1m SMOKING in non-smoking areas made up more than half of the compounds issued nationwide by the Health Ministry from January to April this year relating to the Malaysia Control of Tobacco Product Regulations 2004. During the four months, the ministry issued 4,475 compounds with fines totalling RM999,125. Of this, 2,527 were for smoking in non-smoking areas such as government offices, public transportation vehicles and public transport facilities. Included in the other compounds were for minors caught smoking or possessing tobacco products (1,198), premise owners who failed to display antismoking signs (331), selling tobacco below the floor price (187) and selling individual cigarettes from open packets (201). And for not settling compounds, 1,635 have been brought to court. The ministry said 2,158 operations were carried out nationwide in the first four months of this year, and this covered 25,498 premises.

Marathon tips

Participants of Putrajaya night run receive expert advice WITH the event day looming on Oct 15, a forum was held to help participants prepare for the Putrajaya Night Marathon 2011, the only sanctioned night marathon in Malaysia. Held by organiser Twenty First Century Sports (TFCS) at Bank Simpanan Nasional, the event title sponsor, the forum fielded a panel of four sports experts. About 100 participants exchanged views and received professional advice. "Training is important to prepare for a marathon including diet, attire and footwear," said TFCS director V. Nithiaseelan, who is also the marathon's race director. "While each run is an achievement, it must also be enjoyable. Running a day marathon and one at night is very different. We want to help participants have an injury and mishap-free run. "The forum panelists are

experts and are the best people to answer queries on diet, hydration, injury, footwear and training," he said. The panelists were sports doctor Dr K. Aparajitha, National Sports Institute nutritionist Chai Wen Jin, national marathon coach P. Sidamparam and podiatrist Dr Mark Reyneker. All four advised participants to "listen to their body". Said Chai: "Everyone is unique. The only manner runners can know their body is through experimentation and training." To keep well-hydrated, Chai advised runners to drink small doses, frequently. "Prepare for a marathon at least a month before. Adjust your diet to incorporate high carbohydrate, low fat and a balanced protein intake. Do not overeat as you will carry more weight than you want to. Chai said night marathon

preparation is different. "Your eating schedule is affected differently. It's best to have a meal three to four hours before a marathon. Do not skip meals but 'adjust' them instead." On shoes, Dr Reyneker said choosing breathable shoes and socks would do wonders for one's running. "The only protection runners have are our shoes. The surface,

our bodies and the Malaysian heat affect the gear that we choose," he said adding, "Always purchase a solid running shoe, never badminton, futsal, or casual shoes." Summing it up, Sidamparam said: "Every runner is different and has their own pace. Go slow. Practise daily and don't try anything new at a marathon." Participants welcomed the tips and advice. Ng Kayson, a 24-year-old physiotherapist who signed up for the 21km category, said: "The forum was useful. I'm eager to get better at marathons and this helps with my knowledge on how to approach one. Charity dinner to fund stroke rehab programmes CONSIDER the facts: One in six people worldwide will suffer a stroke in their lifetime. Stroke is the fourth largest killer disease in Malaysia after cancer, heart disease and septicaemia Although the statistics are startling, the public should be aware that with early and controlled rehabilitation, stroke survivors have an even chance of leading near-normal lives, said National Stroke Association of Malaysia (Nasam) founding chairman, Janet Yeo. To raise much-needed funds, Nasam will host a charity dinner on Oct 16 at the Sunway Resort Hotel. The association is Southeast Asia's first non-profit organisation to offer a complete range of rehabilitation services. It operates eight centres nationwide and serves over 3,000 members. Yeo, a stroke survivor, set up Nasam in 1995 to offer daily group therapy sessions and counselling to stroke survivors and their caregivers, and train volunteers.

According to her, the association needs a minimum RM2 million to cover costs yearly. "We rely almost entirely on the goodwill of volunteers, fundraising efforts, and public generosity." Nasam centres currently treat approximately 600 stroke survivors. The treatment fee is RM200 monthly. "Even though we waive the fee for those who cannot afford it, there are stroke survivors who cannot get treatment because they don't have transportation," said Yeo. Eighty tables, each costing between RM5,000 and RM10,000, can be reserved for the dinner. Besides buying tables, individuals or companies can also make tax-exempted cash donations to benefit the association's stroke support programmes. Nasam's long-term goal is to open a stroke centre in every major town in Peninsular Malaysia. Call Nasam Petaling Jaya at 03-7956 4840 or email info@nasam.org for details.

Shattered safety Apartments' management vows security beef-up but calls for residents' cooperation in wake of car-thefts APARTMENT residents often park their vehicles within the compound, confident of their highrise building's security. That was not the case of Avenue Court, Taman Sri Sentosa, off Jalan Klang Lama, for three residents after losing their cars to thieves over two months. AJITPAL SINGH (pic) was one of them. On Sept 12, his mother realised his Proton Wira was not found at the designated parking lot. “When I went to work in the morning, the car was there, but at 5.30pm, my mother noticed the car missing." AJITPAL filed a report

on the theft with the nearby Petaling police station. “The car was parked quite close to the guardhouse.

How can this happen? The guards told me they couldn’t keep a watch on all the cars all the time.” On Sept 19, another resident found her Proton Iswara missing from the parking lot. The first victim was a Block D resident who wanted to be known only as CHIN. The Proton Wira owner discovered the theft on Aug 1. He also lodged a police report at the same station. Says AJITPAL: “I don’t want this to happen to anyone else. I have been staying here for years and the management is normally efficient, but this time, they are quite unresponsive.”

● A REPRESENTATIVE of Stratified Property Management Sdn Bhd, property management company for Avenue Court, says they will now enforce tighter security. “This happens in quite a lot of apartments. But in order to implement stricter measures, we need cooperation from residents as well,” says the company official who declined to be named. He says highrise residential buildings normally have house rules. “But when we implement such house rules, some of residents don’t like it. "The guards stop allow-

ing in non-sticker cars without a pass, but the residents don’t like if we are too strict. “How do we keep a check on everything if house rules are not adhered to?” When asked if the company has changed the security firms and guards, he says: “We have done it many times. "But first of all, the house rule needs to be observed. If residents chide

us for being too strict, how can we guard their properties? “We will definitely enforce stricter rules, we will do our part, but I hope residents do their part as well.” When contacted, AJITPAL acknowledges the importance of such cooperation and hopes the stricter measures will make his apartment a safe place again.

'Missing' bus hassle PETRINA TAN is peeved about being given the runaround and rude treatment over a delayed bus She was waiting for a 7am Transnasional bus trip to Malacca from Pudu Sentral and was supposed to board it at the Bandar Tasik Selatan terminal on Sept 24, arriving there at 6.35am. “I initially went to Platform 18 but the schedule board stated the bus would be coming to Platform 14.

“So I went to Platform 14 and waited until 7.10am when I decided to check the board again. This time, it stated the bus was delayed.” At 7.35am, TAN says a Transnasional bus travelling to Larkin, Johor, arrived at the platform instead, prompting her to ask a staff there whom she assumed to work for the bus company. She says the personnel rudely told her she should not have followed the bus

schedule on the board, asking her to return to Platform 18. “When I went to Platform 18, I waited for another 30 minutes before a Malaccabound bus arrived.” To TAN's shock, the driver told her the bus was scheduled for an 8am trip. “The platform staff whom I saw earlier then returned and scolded me for not being patient. She even told me I don’t have to use Transnasional if I

TAN eventually boarded the 8am bus as she had a 10am appointment. She is unhappy with the whole episode and wants an explanation. ● THE Konsortium Transnasional Berhad explains

there was a 7am trip scheduled for Sept 24 but the bus encountered mechanical problems. “The 8am bus that arrived at the terminal was supposed to pick up passengers for the 7am trip as well due to the delay of the previous bus," says its Corporate and Employee Communications officer, Aisah Mohd. "But that does not excuse the tone with which the staff answered TAN’s queries.

We would like to apologise for that.” Aisah also clarifies the platform staff with a walkietalkie is not their staff but a personnel of Maju Terminal Management. “We are not sure as to why she had to be so rude to TAN. We are truly sorry for all inconveniences caused to her. “We hope our explanation would help clarify the situation on that day.”

Duchess weds toyboy

Excitement in Spain as eccentric aristocrat marries man 25 years her junior SPAIN'S fabulously wealthy 85-year-old Duchess of Alba married a civil servant 25 years her junior yesterday in a story of love and family conflict that has gripped the nation. The twice-widowed aristocrat, renowned for her frizzy hair and colourful dress sense, tied the knot in the chapel of her 15th century Palacio de las Duenas in Seville where she lived with her two previous husbands. The newlyweds were greeted with cheers and applause when they stepped outside the gates to greet the dozens of wellwishers. The duchess then performed a flamenco dance, lifting her hands above her head as she stood on the red carpet. Only her six children and their families, and a handful of friends, were invited to the ceremony and wedding meal, which included gazpacho soup and rice with spicy lobster. Spanish media, particularly the lively gossip shows and Press, have been devouring every detail, and several TV stations broadcast live outside of the palace during the ceremony. But it is the story of the love match and the suspicions of the duchess's children that her beloved may be a gold digger that has really fascinated Spaniards. The duchess, who has more titles than any other noble on Earth according to Guinness World Records, said there had been opposition to the marriage from her children and friends "until they realised the calibre

Murder 'unsolved' after Knox acquittal

BRITISH student Meredith Kercher's killing in Italy in 2007 is now "unsolved" following the acquittal of Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito, the appeals judge who freed them said yesterday. The murder "will remain an unsolved truth," judge Claudio Pratillo Hellmann told reporters in the university town of Perugia where the gruesome killing and sexual assault and the ensuing high-profile investigation took place. "No one can say what really happened. The only person is Rudy Guede," he said, referring to a local drifter who is now the only person convicted for a murder that investigators said must have been carried out by more than one person. "For the moment, Amanda Knox is completely innocent," he added, ahead of an appeal against the acquittals by the prosecution expected to be launched next year after the publication of the appeal court's reasoning for its verdict.

of the man he was, he is". The duchess has said she had to work hard to overcome her offspring's objections to her plans to marry 60-year-old Alfonso Diez. Several months ago, she divided up much of her estate among her five sons and one daughter — palaces, mansions and treasures including masterpieces by artists from Goya to Velazquez, Murillo, Rembrandt and Rubens. But she has kept control until her death over the assets, reputedly worth between €600 mil-

lion and €3.5 billion (RM2.5 billion and RM14.8 billion). As a strict Roman Catholic, the duchess said in an interview on the eve of the wedding that she had no choice but to marry. "I am anti-divorce, anti-abortion, anti all those atrocities," she said in an interview with the Spanish news agency EFE. "I am a Catholic and I practise it. That is why I am marrying for a third time," said the duchess. "Unfortunately, my previous two husbands died." — AFP

APPLE Inc's newest iPhone left Wall Street and fans wishing for more than a souped-up version of last year's device, at a time when rival smartphone makers are nipping at its heels. At his first major product launch since being crowned CEO, Tim Cook ceded the critical iPhone presentation to another executive, and failed to generate the same level of excitement and buzz that predecessor Steve Jobs was famous for. The new iPhone 4S is identical in form to the previous model, disappointing fans who had hoped for a thinner, biggerscreened design.

"It's been 16 months and all you've got is an A5 processor in the existing iPhone 4," BGC Partners' analyst Colin Gillis said of the new Apple phone. "It's a mild disappointment but they're still going to be selling millions of units." The iPhone 4S's voice commands, known as "Siri", caught the attention of several analysts who argued it could profoundly change the user experience. Whether such high-tech wizardry is enough to make the iPhone 4S a must-have in consumers' eyes and set it apart from the competition, remains to be seen. — Reuters

12 lifestyle Sheh wins her fans' hearts DESPITE being an hour late to her meet-the-fan session at the main concourse of Sungei Wang Plaza, Kuala Lumpur, Skinz Infinite Ambassador Charmaine Sheh really knew how to keep her fans happy. The event, which was supposed to start at 5.30pm, was delayed for an hour. And fans, who had come as early as 1pm last weekend, stood and fidgetted in their lines. Appearing in a black dress, Sheh, a popular Hong Kong TVB, flashed her smiles and switched on her charm the moment she arrived. "I can always count on

you (fans) for your warm support. Malaysian fans especially are the best and you guys do not dissapoint," the actress said. "Thank you all for your continuous support all the time and I hope that you will continue to pour in your support," she added. And with that, all was forgiven. The 36-year-old who was also the second runner-up in the 1997 Miss Hong Kong Pageant, is currently busy filming The Founding of the Yuan Empire in Mongolia. The actress is obviously doing well. She has been reported to pocket double the fees in Mainland China

than in Hong Kong. Playing Empress Chabi in the new series, Sheh recently received great comments from her fans after she posted a photo of herself in an elaborate princess costumes in her Weibo account. At the meet-and-greet session, Sheh had a huge turn-out and 15 lucky fans had the opportunity for a one-on-one photograph session with their idol. Apart from Kuala Lumpur, the actress will also make her appearances at Gurney Plaza in Penang before ending her trip at Metro Prima in Kepong. —Story and pic by LOONG WAI TING

GREAT PR: Despite keeping her fans waiting for hours, Sheh was instantly forgiven IF you are a true blue fan of horror movies, you are not going to enjoy this film. Dream House, directed by Jim Sheridan, the man behind great films like My Left Foot and The Boxer (as well as average films like Brothers and Get Rich or Die Trying), was shakily built. However, audiences might still give the film the benefit of the doubt because of the movie's crowd pullers such as the latest 'Bond guy' Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz (The Mummy and The Mummy Returns) and Naomi Watts (King Kong).

The story revolves around a family who had just moved into their so-called "dream house" in a peaceful New England town. The husband Will (Craig) is an editor-at-large at a respectable New York publishing company who decides to quit and pay more attention to his wife, Libby (Rachel) and their two daughters. As the family begins redecorating their new place, things start to get creepy. Things go bump in the night on the first night itself as they begin to hear noises and footsteps outside

FAMILY TERROR: Weisz (left) and Craig holding their two 'movie' children

HONG KONG director Tony Ching Siu-Tung's The Sorcerer and the White Snake is an overdone movie. It relies too much on computer-generated-images (CGI) that at times, looks too "artificial" to be taken seriously. The director seems to have tried too hard to cram as much as possible into his extravagant storyline. It could have been better if he had cut down the amount of effects used. Less is more, as people say. With martial arts superstar Jet Li on board, the action sequences are as restless as he shows off

FIGHT SEQUENCES: Li (left) clashing with Huang his skill while, err..capturing demons along the way. You might enjoy it though, if you're a Jet Li fan. Despite the grouses, it is interesting to note how Ching pieced together all of his cast, with each delivering spectacular performances. No matter how big or small their roles were, they "helped" keep the movie afloat. At a certain point, the movie did bear a striking resemblance to Tsui Hark's The Legend of Zu and the more recent A Chinese Ghost Story. The Sorcerer and the White

the home. The daughters also get the shock of their lives when they see a man peeking into their wndow. Will tries to console his wife who can't seem to stop ranting about the safety of their daughters. He starts looking for answers and his interest becomes an obsession when he stumbles upon a bunch of goth teens chanting in front of a "shrine" in the basement. Things start to unravel as Will gets many unpleasant

answers about the house and along the way, about himself too. Will's quiet neighbour Ann (Watts) seems to know something but always appears to be avoiding him. She, however, decides to offer her help and reveals the secrets of the house. All this sets a nice premise to a classic haunting story but the problem is, the script is mediocre and loose. Craig's character too seems underdeveloped. The only thing that might please his audience is the

fact that he remains shirtless in many scenes. But hats off to Weisz as she was good as the terrified Libby. There is a clever twist in the end though. However, since most of us might have seen too many other similar-type movies, the "surprise" may be a little discounted. Yes, it was brilliant, but not original enough. Still, if you are a fan of the hunky Craig and the lovely Weisz and Watts, you might get your moments at the movie. —By CHE'AZ

who chances upon the snakes to a final battle between good and evil. Still, Li's presence in the movie shines throughout, though his character does feel a little under-developed. However, his genuine action and on-screen charisma as a powerful sorcerer and monk is passable. What came as a surprise is Eva Huang's character as the White Snake. Huang breaks into the entertainment scene, and received rave reviews for her performance as Fong, the mute girl from Stephen Chow's Kung Fu Hustle. In White Snake, she plays a sometimes happy-go-lucky girl but turns into something vicious during the final battle with Fa Hai. Despite the amount of distraction by the untimely CGIs, the film is quite a good ride, especially with its surprise ending. All in all, Ching manages to maintain a good grip in his storytelling by incorporating comedy, action, drama and even romance.

f lost youth and puppy love having fun with his friends and falling for the girl of his dreams. Based on the novel of the same name, the story centres on Ko and his five buddies and their adventures as he strives to win over the heart of fellow A-student, Shen Chia Yi, which is wonderfully played by Michelle Chen. Each of the characters and all the incidents are successfully depicted and they comfortably find their way into the

audience's hearts. While most people would normally associate a teenage rom-com with sex and gore, You Are the Apple of My Eye cleverly illustrates raging hormones in a very subtle yet funny way, without once forcing the issue. The formula is almost similar to the directing style of another Taiwanese box office hit, Monga. The rhythm is nice and the pace is well-calculated. While the transition from one scene to another utilises the

GROWING UP: The main characters and the teenage Ko (third left) in the movie

slow motion technique, the entire movie is quite fastpaced and well-timed. The movie's major turning point was when the characters take their time to announce their exit from their high school life and which gave the audience a hint of the development that was coming. You Are the Apple of My Eye topped the box office in its home country Taiwan, surpassing Monga and Cape No 7 on its opening day and during the weekend showing. An alternative to the conventional teenage love story, the movie was also sweetened by the innocence of teenhood that was so well-contained by the script and visuals. Brilliant, fresh and funny — the movie is a reminder of lost youth and the comedy of puppy love. —By LOONG WAI TING

ALL-AMERICAN WEDDING: Norman and Memey (centre) flanked by an all-star cast of bridesmaids and best men —Pix: SAMSUL SAID

Memey in a ‘New York state of mind’

IMAGINE a girl from Kota Tinggi (you can look up the map if you're not Malaysian enough) who said, when she grows up she wants a "New York kind of wedding". Why would someone think of that? Ask actress Suhaiza Suhaimi who grew up in a Felda settlement, and she might give you all the reasons why she had always dreamt of a "classy New York-ish white wedding”. At any rate, her reasons might not be too important now because she married actor Norman Hakim and this led to the "New York-themed wedding" that she had always wanted. What’s more, the young starlet, who is better known among the TV fraternity as Memey, did not just get her "New York wedding reception", she also got tongues wagging when the event was reported to have cost some RM12 million! For real? Well, it was made possible with the help of quite a number of generous sponsors and helpful friends. For instance, Memey wore a Rafflesia Pearl Gown embedded with Rafflesia pearls (which certainly cost a bomb). Her bridesmaids? They were also among the most expensive television faces including Miera Liyana, Fathia, Julia Ziegler and Eina who were also dressed by Rafflesia. To top it all, Memey's gown was completed by a pair of custom-made shoes designed by none other than Datuk Jimmy Choo. Not to be outdone was husband Norman who was in a white tailcoat suit supplied by Lords Tailor. The suit was accessorised with cufflinks and buttons of Rafflesia pearls and his best men were Afiq Muiz, Fizz Fairuz and two Indonesian actors, Samuel Rizal and Didi Riyadi. They too were dressed by Lords Tailor. The second part of the night saw Memey wearing a champagne dress from Vera Wang. It is said the dress, which was rather Bohemian-styled and embedded with gold pearls, while embellished and completed by a veil by

ENTERTAINMENT: The hap py nuptials featured a sho wtime segment

Rafflesia, was specially purchased from an agent in Hong Kong. Apparently, the wedding planner of the night who made the couple's dream come true, was Nas from Nas Of Great Ideas who really pushed the envelope. Every detail was thought out and it was reported that the cost to

cover the entire ballroom with fresh flowers and other luxurious decorations, was RM330,000. The glamourous evening was also made even more eventful with the entertainment provided by more (expensive stars) backed by an orchestra and the RTeez. De.Chorale choir. Other celebrity friends who attended the reception that night joined in the merriment and took turns at the microphone to perform for the happy couple and their guests. Among them were Fauziah Latiff, Azhar Osman (Bintang Idola Berita Harian), Amanda Amani, Nubhan and Deja Moss. So have you done your maths? Do you think everything really cost RM12 million? Maybe. Not too shabby for a girl from Kota Tinggi... —By CHE'AZ

Button feels emotions flowing ahead of Suzuka

MCLAREN'S Jenson Button b elieves this weekend's Japanese Grand Prix will be an emotional experience. With Japanese model girlfriend Jessica Michibata, and with Japan now his second home, Button is aware of how the country continues to cope with the natural disaster which struck last March. It was almost eight months ago a tsunami caused by an 8.9-magnitude earthquake devastated north-east Japan, killing more than 15,000. With that part of the world still looking to rebuild, in particular given the meltdown at the Fukushima nuclear power plant, the title-deciding race on Sunday will prove to be a

special event. "Japan is a place close to my heart," said Button. "Obviously, it's going to be an emotional experience for me to be racing in Japan for the first time since the events of last March. "I'm proud the Formula 1 world championship will put Japan on the world's sporting stage this weekend. "While the country is collectively rebuilding itself, I'm deeply aware sport can play a significant role in helping to restore hope and normality to communities that were torn apart by the earthquake and tsunami. "For everyone who follows Formula 1, I hope we can put on a great race to bring

further strength to the people of Japan. And to everyone in Japan, I say: Ganbatte (do your best)." Like Button, McLaren teammate Lewis Hamilton would also like to think the race will

Ramadan happy at UniKL

MUHAMAD RAMADAN ROSLI (pic) is UniKL's hottest property. Courted by big guns Sapura and KL Hockey Club (KLHC), Ramadan opted to stay with the university side as he wants to become a mainstay of the team and not just a squad player. "I felt proud when I was approached by them (Sapura and KLHC). But I don't want to just warm the bench," said Ramadan. "There is no point joining a bigger club and not playing. I rather stay here and help develop UniKL." Sapura and KLHC called up Ramadan for trials at the beginning of the ongoing Malaysia Hockey League (MHL) campaign but the 20-year-old wasn't even interested in attending trials. It is rumoured that even Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) are monitoring the young lad's progress. Should Ramadan opt to leave UniKL, he would have the chance to train regularly with national players. This could improve his game but the midfield/forward refuted that suggestion. "I do have experience training and playing with some national players during the Razak Cup. "Here, at UniKL, I know all the players. We've come through the ranks together," he added. Ramadan won the Malaysia

have a positive effect. "We all travel to Japan extremely mindful of the consequences of the earthquake and tsunami that ravaged the country earlier this year," said Hamilton.

"I hope the Japanese GP can successfully show the world the country is strengthening and rebuilding itself after the terrible events of last March." As for the GP itself, Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel requires just a point to retain his title and become the sport's youngest back-to-back and double world champion. As Vettel has won the last two Grands Prix at Suzuka, it is hard to imagine the 24-yearold will not make it three in a row and win the title in style. Button, who has enjoyed a win, two seconds and a third in the last four races, feels McLaren should not be ruled out in their bid to deny Vettel the race win at least.

"In the last few races we've shown we have extremely good pace and that we've been the team most able to take the fight to Red Bull," said Button. "It's a circuit that will suit the Red Bulls, particularly in the high-speed sweeps that make up the first sector. But I certainly don't think people should underestimate our package. "We showed at Spa we have a car that's very effective in high-speed corners. "We've also improved our straight-line speed and we have a more efficient rearwing for qualifying, so I think we're feeling positive about the weekend."

Cricket's 'Tiger' toured Malaysia in the 60s

FORMER Indian cricket captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, also known as the Nawab of Pataudi, who passed away in New Delhi on Sept 22 of a lung disease at 70, made one or two guest appearances at the Selangor Club. He was among a cream of world class players who toured Kuala Lumpur for matches against Malaysian Selections in the 1960s. Well framed pictures of him in cream coloured flannels and playing gear still hang prominently in the long bar of the Selangor Club, alongside former England captain Geoff Boycott and West Indies captain and allrounder Sir Garfield Sobers. Best remembered for his close in-fielding, Pataudi captained India in 40 Tests, and won only nine of them, but it seemed he had won many more. He once revealed his regret of never pl ay i ng w it h a great batsman of the likes of Sunil G a v a s k a r, w h o arrived as his captaincy ended. His nickname,

"Tiger", dated from childhood, seemed to fit his style of play. His fierce competitiveness at bat, hooking and driving the ball; or his elegant fielding in the covers, racing with easy grace to scoop and return; or his eager crouch in the gully, waiting to destroy all alluded to the moniker. His skills were honed on India’s hard, dry grounds and helped him achieve India’s first Test series victory abroad, against New Zealand in 1967-68. Yet, his true heroism sprang from a handicap — he only had one eye. The right had been lost in a car accident in England in 1960, apparently eclipsing at the outset of his cricket career. But his ambition was undamaged. Within weeks he was in the nets again, practising, and within months was playing Test cricket

against the West Indies, and some of the fastest bowlers in the world. He was picked as captain when Nari Contractor was concussed by a ball. He was only 21, but said his experience at Winchester and Oxford meant that "one was not naive". He went on to score 2,793 Test runs over his career, including six centuries. No one knew how. He explained that he in fact saw two balls, and hit the inside one. Who knows what he could have achieved with two good eyes. For better or worse, he i nt r o d u c e d B o l l y w o o d glamour to cricket by marr ying Sharmila Tagore, a glittering film star. He lamented how Indian captains were made idols and then "thrown in the gutter" by the public. The habit took off with him. But his import a n c e went well beyond cricket.

Pumas under video scrutiny

Les Bleus focused on sending England home, says Yachvili FRANCE scrumhalf Dimitri Yachvili insisted they have moved on from their debacle against Tonga and are intent on perfecting the basics in order to beat England in Saturday's quarterfinal in Auckland. Les Bleus lost 19-14 to Tonga last weekend and there has been talk of a mutiny within the camp. However, Yachvili was adamant head coach Marc Lievremont has the full support of the squad with the collective goal of advancing to the last four at the expense of the team who eliminated them from the 2003 and 2007 tournaments. "We have changed a lot and talked a lot together this week," said Yachvili. "We didn't train for three months to stop at the quarterfinal. "We may never play again in the quarterfinal of the World Cup. That's the motivation. We know that if we play the same way we played last week we can't win against England. It's going to be hard, but it will be another team than last Saturday." France have concentrated

on ironing out their flaws since the defeat to Tonga which saw them advance to the last eight in unconvincing manner. "During the quarterfinal, semifinal and final, the most important thing is the basics and the English are the best, maybe in the world, at the basics. That's why we trained a lot on the basics this week. We have to put a lot of pressure on them and, as usual, be better in the forwards,"

said Yachvili. He highlighted England flyhalf Jonny Wilkinson and centre Manu Tuilagi — particularly his ability to cross the gain line as key dangers — while recognising the challenge presented to break through their defence. "We respect this team because they've conceded just one try since the beginning of the tournament," said Yachvili. However, avenging the

losses in the last two World Cups is not on the agenda, according to Yachvili. "There is no revenge. We just know that the English are better in the World Cup," he said. "We will expect a lot from this team. This is one of the best teams in the world. We train this week to be as good as them. If we are efficient and if our forwards can be better than theirs, I think we can win against England."

Underdogs Pumas won't give All Blacks easy path

ARGENTINA wing Horacio Agulla believes concentration and patience will be key for the Pumas in Sunday's daunting quarterfinal clash with New Zealand. Few are giving the Pumas much hope of upsetting the hosts in Auckland, particularly on the back of a rather uninspiring victory over Georgia last weekend. Agulla admits they face an unenviable task but he feels if they can maintain their focus for the entire 80 minutes, they can pull off what would be the biggest shock in the tournament's history. "It's a big challenge for us playing against the best team in the world," he said. "It's going to be a massive game and a dream to play in New Zealand at the

World Cup against New Zealand. "You can't give them 10 minutes, otherwise they can score five tries over you. We have to be smart and play with passion. We

have to be 100 per cent focused. We have to trust in ourselves and each other. "We have to respect our system and play our best in attack and be in control of our defence. Being patient

is the trick. We have to play the 80 minutes and see what happens." Argentina's cause has, on the face of it, been aided by the All Blacks' loss of Dan Carter to a tournamentending groin injury but Agulla is of the opinion that the absence of the game's finest playmaker has not made their task any easier, such is New Zealand's strength in depth. "Dan is the best flyhalf in the world, but New Zealand are always going to find players with plenty of talent," said the Leicester Tigers ace. Agulla said the game will be decided up front. "They have great forwards — flanker Jerome Kaino is very strong — and we have to try and control them."

THE New Zealand camp are spending this week glued to the television screen watching videos of Argentina ahead of their quarterfinal clash at Eden Park on Sunday. The All Blacks are having to rely on tapes because the teams have not met since June 2006. "It's a shame you don't play more often but that's the reality," said second row Ali Williams. The 30-year-old played in that last encounter — a 25-19 victory for his side in Buenos Aires — and retains memories of a powerful Argentina pack. "Their lineout contested everything and the scrum was their strength and what they pride themselves on. We would have been in all sorts of trouble if we didn't muscle up there," said Williams. "The other reality is they've got some pretty good backs that can sting you from all over. They are a dangerous side and in that game, we almost got caught out." Williams is expecting another battle up front on Sunday as the All Blacks forwards face their biggest challenge yet in the tournament. "They're very forwardorientated. They love that physical confrontation," he said. William's fellow second row, Brad Thorn, may have been playing rugby league in Australia when New Zealand last met Argentina but he knows all about their style of play. "We have massive respect for Argentina's scrum, lineout, forward play in general. It's a great thing to come up against really good opponents and test yourself." The odds are against the Pumas, though. In

13 matches against the All Blacks, a draw is the closest they have come to victory. Argentina will get a chance to improve that record when they join New Zealand, Australia and South Africa in the new Four Nations competition next year. The Pumas finished a credible third in the World Cup in France in 2007 but critics who question their ability four years on see a Pool B defeat by England and a one-point victory over Scotland as evidence of decline. But Williams was adamant there was no room for complacency among the All Blacks. "I think Argentina are a very strong outfit. Their game suits knockout competition. If you take them lightly then it will be a quiet old Monday for us." Meanwhile, All Blacks winger Zac Guildford could be out of contention for the clash after suffering a suspected hamstring injury. Guildford, who scored four tries in his first World Cup outing against Canada last weekend, pulled up during training yesterday. However, skipper Richie McCaw returned to training after recovering from a foot injury.

DISAPPOINTING: Ibrahimovic found interests in other things — AFP photo

Ibrahimovic admits he's fed up with football AC MILAN striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has admitted he no longer enjoys football as much as he used to and that he doesn't want to continue playing if he can't cope at the top level anymore. Ibra, as he is popularly known in Italy, says he is getting older and that football doesn't come to him as easily as it once did. "It's normal with time you have to take more care of yourself," he said. "When I was younger even if I was in pain or had problems I could still train and straight away I could kick a ball 40 metres. "Now it doesn't work that way, I have to warm up and everything before

kicking a ball. "I'm getting old," said the forward, who turned 30 on Tuesday. "I'm not joking, it's disappointing talking about this so often but I don't have the same grit that I had before. "I enjoyed it more a few years ago, now it's more of a routine, even though I still enjoy it. "But I can't see myself playing with grey hair until I'm physically knackered. "I want to stop when I'm still at the top, I don't know if I'll manage that but I hope so. "When I was younger I filled every second with football, I didn't think about anything but the ball and sometimes I didn't even go to school so I

could play football. "Now my daily life is different, I'm also interested in other things. "I try to force myself to play with my children and naturally every so often I go out in the garden to kick a ball around with them. "But I find even that difficult and sometimes it's up to the babysitter to play with them." Meanwhile, Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho will be banned for two matches for jabbing his finger into the eye of Barcelona's assistant coach, the Spanish football federation said. Barcelona assistant coach Tito Vilanova was banned for one match for respond-

ing to Mourinho by slapping him during a mass brawl in the final moments of Real Madrid's Super Cup loss to Barcelona on Aug 17, the federation said. The bad feeling between the two clubs boiled over at the end of their match in the Nou Camp, which Barcelona won 3-2, giving them a 5-4 aggregate victory and the Super Cup trophy. As players scrapped on the field, television pictures showed Mourinho walking over to Pep Guardiola's assistant Vilanova and poking him in the eye. Third seed Vera Zvonareva crumbled to a 6-1, 6-2 defeat against Serbia's Ana Ivanovic in the third round and there was more disappointment for home fans as wildcard Zheng Jie was bundled out by Agnieszka Radwanska. "I would love people to be a bit more respectful and turn off their cell phones and just come and watch tennis and respect that players are doing their job," world No 4 Azarenka said. LONDON: FOOTBALL/ PREMIER LEAGUE

'Criticism of Wenger is a joke' ARSENAL midfielder Jack Wilshere (pic) has backed Arsene Wenger to get the Gunners back on track after insisting criticism of the French coach is a joke. Wenger has come under fire after six years without a trophy and his team's dismal start to the season has only added to the pressure. He has been criticised for promoting young players rather than spending bigmoney on star signings and Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis felt compelled to issue a vote of confidence in Wenger in the aftermath of the humiliating 8-2 defeat at Manchester United. Arsenal's struggles have continued in recent weeks and the north London club are languishing in 15th place in the Premier League — only two points off the relegation zone — after Sunday's 2-1 defeat at local rivals Tottenham. Yet England international Wilshere sees no reason to blame Wenger for the slump and he believes the boss will get it right given time. "He has been there for 15 years and been great for Arsenal. The criticism Arsene gets is just a joke," Wilshere told the Evening Standard. "We do get a harder time from the critics than most teams but we haven't won anything for six years and that's not good enough for Arsenal. It is harsh, though, especially on the boss. "We started a bit slowly but we still feel we can finish in the top four." Wilshere, currently out

of action for five months after ankle surgery, offered another boost for Wenger as he insisted there is no chance he will follow Samir Nasri and Gael Clichy out of the Emirates Stadium. France stars Nasri and Clichy joined Manchester City in the close-season and Wilshere, in a clear swipe at his former teammates, insists that kind of move is only motivated by money. "No disrespect to Manchester City but Arsenal is the perfect home for me right now," he said. "Some players have got their price but, to be honest, that's not the way I look at the game. "All I think about is playing at the highest level and in the top competitions so I can measure myself against the best in the world. "I really am happy at Arsenal at the minute. Obviously, I want to win things and I want to do it with Arsenal." — AFP

Barton: Accountability is the name of the game QUEENS PARK RANGERS captain Joey Barton (pic) believes crowd abuse will always be a part of football unless offenders are made accountable for their actions. Crowd abuse has come under the spotlight again after last weekend's north London derby between Tottenham and Arsenal was marred by offensive chanting from both sets of supporters at White Hart Lane. Sections of home supporters taunted under-fire Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, while some away fans chanted offensive songs towards Spurs striker Emmanuel Adebayor, who used to be a Gunner. The controversial Barton, who himself has been the

target of opposition fans, admits crowd abuse is likely to continue in football unless the culprits are punished. "It's just sort of been the norm for me (crowd abuse) through my own stupidity and just football in general," Barton told Sky Sports. "It is a strange society we live in where a lot of things are not allowed to be said in normal atmospheres but it's like anything goes in football. "There's no point complaining about it because none of us can stop the 20, 30, 40,000 people singing or chanting. "It is one of the disappointing aspects of the game and it will continue until there's accountability."

LONDON: FOOTBALL/ EURO 2012 QUALIFIERS

The end is nigh Capello won't stay on after Euros, says FA chairman

ENGLISH FA chair man David Bernstein insisted there is no chance of Fabio Capello (pic) remaining as England coach beyond Euro 2012. Bernstein also claimed that the FA had not started the search for the 65-year-old Italian's successor, saying: "You can't be half-pregnant on these things." Responding to speculation that some within the FA are keen for Capello to extend his contract, Bernstein told the Leaders in Football conference in London: "One day he's going to go. The next day, he's going to stay for 20 years." Bernstein also insisted the FA were determined to learn the lessons from England's 2010 World Cup failure and would not keep the team isolated in their hotel during Euro 2012. He suggested the squad would follow the example of World Cup runners-up Holland, who visited Robben Island — where Nelson

League win over Olympiakos. Capello is keen to have a closer look at the winger and is prepared to call him for friendlies before Euro 2012. "I have been impressed with him," Capello told FATV. "He is a really interesting player. He is a good player, who has a lot quality and is playing at a of high level. "He will be a really interesting player for the next friendly games before the Euros, which hopefully will happen for us." Capello also expressed his

provide an enjoyable environment and experience at tournaments. "We are determined our teams will fully embrace being involved at World Cups and European Championships, be good tourists engaging with fans, staying more centrally and not being isolated." Meanwhile, former England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson has tipped Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger as a possible successor to Capello as England coach. Capello is set to leave the role after the end of Euro 2012, should England qualify, and speculation will be rife over the coming months about the man to replace him. The likes of Harr y Redknapp and Roy Hodgson have been mentioned as possible candidates amid the clamour for an Englishman to be appointed into the role. Most of the mainstream media seems to believe that

Redknapp's appointment is a mere formality, but Eriksson believes Wenger could be an alternative. "Whatever the nationality of the coach, he has a difficult time if you don't reach the semifinal," Eriksson told The Times. "Quarterfinals were not good enough! I don't know what (the FA) are going to do, who they will take. Reporters talk about Redknapp as the people's choice and I'm quite sure if they could get Wenger, they would take him. "Wenger can adapt to everything. I mean, he lives for football and his family. If you consider him foreign (after his 15 years in England), I don't know. "When I was there, that was a big issue, all the time more or less, because I was the first foreigner. But that's gone, I think. Then they went back to an English coach and that didn't work out, so they appointed a foreign coach."

delight at seeing OxladeChamberlain and Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck score in the Champions League recently. "For players to score goals in this competition is really important, both to improve and find the confidence in their quality," he said. "It is the same when you play with the national team. When you play in the Premier League, you can score but the whole thing is normal." Meanwhile, Liverpool man-

ager Kenny Dalglish believes midfielder Steven Gerrard will benefit from his omission from the England squad. The influential Reds captain is still striving for full fitness after a six-month lay-off with a groin injury. The 31-year-old was back in England contention after making three substitute appearances but Dalglish feels Capello was right to overlook him for tomorrow's Euro 2012 qualifier in Montenegro. "I think it's beneficial for

everybody that Stevie hasn't been called up by England," Dalglish told Liverpool Echo. "He's got back to where he is right now because of the people that have been working with him. He's said himself that he has great faith in those people. "I don't think it would have been helpful for Stevie — or us or England — if he had gone away for the game against Montenegro. I think it's a sensible decision for all concerned."

Capello to give Chamberlain a chance COACH Fabio Capello hinted he is prepared to hand Arsenal youngster Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain a chance to establish himself in the England squad. Oxlade-Chamberlain impressed Capello after arriving at Arsenal from Southampton in the summer. The 18-year-old scored on his first senior start for the Gunners in their League Cup win over Shrewsbury and he followed that up with a strike in last week's Champions

GERMANY striker Miroslav Klose has set his sights on his nation's all-time goalscoring record currently held by legend Gerd Muller. Klose, now with Lazio, has scored 62 goals for Germany and needs six more goals to equal Muller's record. With the upcoming Euro 2012 qualifiers against Turkey tomorrow and Belgium on Tuesday, Klose has an opportunity to bridge the gap. "I want to break the record with the national team now," Klose told Bild. The 33-year-old then went on to make it clear he is not

"We want to win all 10 qualifying matches, and then I will speak with the coach about my future. "I am a spontaneous person and I make my decision about when I retire from my gut feeling. But as long as I am enjoying myself and am free of injury, then I want to keep playing. "I never have fear for competition. It is all down to me anyway — when I am fit, I

will play. And I am feeling really good." Klose has been in impressive form since leaving Bayern for Lazio in the summer transfer window, having already scored five goals in seven matches. Meanwhile, Germany midfielder Sami Khedira slammed reports suggesting his international career is hanging in the balance. The Real Madrid man made the last of his 20 appearances for Germany in the Euro 2012 qualifier against Austria in June. He was left out of the squad for a series of friendly matches in August while injury

prevented him from being called up for last month's round of Group A qualifiers. Khedira, 24, returned to the fold for the matches against Turkey and Belgium, but in his absence the likes of Bastian Schweinsteiger, Mario Gotze, Toni Kroos and Andre Schurrle have shone. This led to suggestions that Khedira is no longer a first choice under coach Joachim Loew. But Khedira branded those suggestions "disrespectful", saying: "I have found this whole discussion very interesting. "People have started to talk

Germans doped up in '66 final ENGLISH football's greatest triumph has taken a bizarre twist after it emerged that German players were using drugs in the 1966 World Cup final, in which England famously beat West Germany 4-2. A newly released letter obtained from historians at Berlin's Humboldt University revealed that three unnamed players tested positive for a banned stimulant. The letter is dated Nov 29, 1966 and was written by the Yugoslav chairman of Fifa's medical committee, Mihailo Andrejevic. In it, he informed fellow doctor Max Danz — president of the West German Athletics Federation — that doping tests at the World Cup had uncovered the illegal use of ephedrine.

Despite the gloomy forecasts about his international future, Khedira is in line to return to Loew's line-up tomorrow with Kroos ruled out by injury.

Rio to become Chicago's Becks CHICAGO FIRE want to make Rio Ferdinand the new David Beckham of Major League Soccer. The American team are desperate for a high profile English player to enable them to compete with Beckham’s Los Angeles Galaxy, and have identified Ferdinand as their main target. Ferdinand will be 33 next month and is out of contract at Manchester United at the end of next season. Chicago want the England defender to join them next summer and believe they can persuade him to turn his back on the Barclays Premier League to finish his career in the States.

MANCHESTER CITY striker Carlos Tevez did not refuse to come on as a substitute during his side’s Champions League defeat at Bayern Munich, according to his advisor Kia Joorabchian. Tevez is currently serving a two-week suspension while City chiefs carry out an investigation into manager Roberto Mancini’s allegation that the Argentine star ignored his instruction to go on during last week’s 2-0 loss in Germany. During a post-match television interview in Munich, Tevez appeared to admit his guilt when he said: “I did not feel right to play, so I did not.” But his advisor Joorabchian, speaking at the Leaders in Football conference in London yesterday, claimed the translation of the questions put to Tevez were not accurate. “You can’t criticise him for his commitment on the pitch,” Joorabchian said. “One of the biggest problems is that in a situation right after a game questions are asked and things are taken out of context. “If you don’t have a professional interpreter, you have a problem. The interpretation was incorrect. Both

questions and answers from Carlos were interpreted incorrectly.” Joorabchian appeared to blame Mancini for the situation as he claimed the Italian had struggled to deal with Tevez, who has been keen to leave for several months now citing family reasons. “This is a personal relationship between two people. We have seen this happen all through summer,” Joorabchian said. “We have seen (Cesc) Fabregas, (Samir) Nasri and (Luka) Modric — the list goes on — but they are high-profile names who have handed in transfer requests, refused to travel, refused to play. “They refused to play in a different way and those managers and clubs handled them differently.” Joorabchian also insisted TV pictures that showed Tevez seemingly unhappy with Mancini’s request to go on in Munich were confused by the City manager’s row with Bosnian striker Edin Dzeko, who was angry at having been substituted. He said: “What happened on the bench in Munich was one of a lot of confusion as shown on the TV footage. The events of Munich have been judged prior to the real

outcome. “We see Nigel de Jong going on and Carlos still warming up and a God-awful row between Roberto Mancini and Edin Dzeko. You see this row carrying on and Carlos sits down. Carlos then stands up, there’s more shouting and he sits back down. The next thing we hear is what Roberto says. “I have known Carlos since he was an 18-yearold and you cannot criticise his commitment in terms of wanting to play. “He has played at Manchester City having taken injections, with swollen ankles. He played at Corinthians where doctors have told him not to play.” Tevez appears certain to leave City when the transfer window re-opens in January but Joorabchian refused to speculate on his future. “I cannot predict what Carlos wants to do. He has been clearly judged and condemned before the case has been fully looked into.” — AFP

LONDON: football/ euro 2012

For crown and country, says Parker MIDFIELDER Scott Parker (pic) says it will be an honour to help England qualify for a major tournament and is determined to help them reach Euro 2012. England need to take only a point from their trip to Montenegro tomorrow to book their place at next summer’s European Championship. Qualification would present Parker with the opportunity to turn out at his first international showpiece. Scott has become a first-team regular under coach Fabio Capello, eight years after making his England bow. He is now setting his sights on retaining his place in the squad and

earning himself a seat on the plane to Ukraine and Poland. “It is a great honour for me to represent my country and I probably speak for everyone in the squad when I say it would be a proud moment if we do manage to qualify. “I have always said how many good midfield players we have. It is the manager’s decision and I am sure he will put a side out there he feels is best equipped to win on Friday,” he told Sky Sports. Parker, 31, will be hoping to make Capello’s cut in Podgorica and he could be joined in the starting XI by Spurs colleague Kyle Walker.

The rightback has taken giant strides over the last two seasons, with a loan spell at Aston Villa having aided his development, and Parker believes the 21-year-old would not let anyone down if he is handed his England bow. “Since I have been at Spurs, Kyle has really stood out,” he said. “He is a fantastic player. He is young. He has bundles of energy and is quick. “He scored a good goal at the weekend (against Arsenal) but his performance before that was really good. I am sure if he is called upon on Friday he will be more than ready to go.”
