Ticket to ride Smooth road-rail travel for Klang Valley by 2013 when two major transport operators’ electronic pass systems merge

>> pg2

By SHAHRIM TAMRIN shahrimtamrin@mmail.com.my AFTER more than 13 years of a single ticketing system since the introduction of the Touch ‘n Go prepaid card, commuters can now look forward to seamless travel on rail networks and bus services across the Klang Valley come 2013. With the aim of gradually achieving the level of electronic ticketing of London’s Oyster smartcard or Hong Kong’s Octopus Card, among others, public transport efficiency here will reach new heights with the Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) system. After years of facing different ticketing systems, preparing small change for exact fare and queuing up at counters, Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad (Prasarana) — the operator of the Light Rail Transit (LRT), monorail and RapidKL bus services — and Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB), which runs the Komuter service, have confirmed a single ticketing system would materialise soon.

Prasarana group managing director Shahril Mokhtar and KTMB president Dr Aminuddin Adnan revealed to The Malay Mail a new AFC system would be adopted by both parties once it is in operation next year. Shahril said Prasarana would be launching its own AFC network early next year, paving the way for an integration with KTMB’s system at a later stage. “Once the AFC is up and running for our services early next year, we will be ready to integrate with KTMB as their AFC system will also be on the same platform and design.” Shahril said the all-in-one ticketing system would offer a hassle-free journey for Klang Valley’s public transport users. “Commuters will only need to use just one cashless card for our LRT, monorail and bus services. It will take off early next year when the station integration works in Hang Tuah,

Masjid Jamek and Titiwangsa are completed by the thirdquarter of this year.” Shahril said the AFC system would also be included for future MRT and LRT extension services. The station integration is considered to be the catalyst for Prasarana to launch the AFC system as it will ensure commuters a seamless journey without having to purchase different tickets or going through turnstiles to change rail routes. Aminuddin said KTMB’s AFC system for its Komuter service was being installed and the roll-out to all its 56 rail stations was expected to be completed in 12 months. “The contractor will complete the AFC system for the KTM Komuter service by June next year. We will then start to commission the new ticketing system to replace the obsolete system we have right now. • Continued on pg3

PSD scholars agree on scholarship payback if they fail to return home By AZREEN HANI azreenhani@mmail.com.my

IT is the government's right to ask students sponsored by the Public Service Department (PSD) to repay their scholarships when they refuse to come home after completing their studies. This was the opinion offered by PSD scholars yesterday. Hazli Emrie Rosly, 36, a lecturer in a public university, said those on scholarships must pay back as the country had spent a lot of money on their higher education. "The time and money spent on them could have been given to someone else who would not have minded serving the country after their studies," said the University of Colorado graduate.

He said stern punishment should be imposed on students who refuse to return home. "When working overseas, these graduates are usually highly paid and can afford to pay back their scholarships." The same sentiment was echoed by Afifi Abdul Latif, 25, an engineering student at Fachhochschule Hannover in Germany. He described the government's move as "bold" but that it made sense. "We do have a contract saying we are obliged to return home after completing our studies." A medicine student in Indonesia, who declined to be

named, said: "I think that such students should pay back the amount as it would give the government the opportunity to continue offering scholarships to those who need it and who are willing to serve the government." Another PSD scholar who graduated from the United Kingdom said it was the government's prerogative to take any action they thought was necessary. "Students who are sponsored by PSD should know that it is their responsibility to eventually serve the country, whether they like it or not," said the PSD scholar who preferred anonymity. "They are among the top

THE International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) is monitoring the three national sprinters who skipped their anti-doping tests two weeks ago. The trio — Noor Imran Ab Hadi, Nurul Sarah Abd Kadir and Norjannah Hafiszah — failed to give their samples and left for a trainingcum-competition stint in Bulgaria. In an email to The Malay Mail, IAAF general secretary Pierre Weiss said: “Many thanks for this report. Doping matters by definition are confidential matters. “But trust us, we will act in accordance with our rules.” The Malaysian Amateur Athletics Union (MAAU) has yet to disclose the exact location of the athletes to the Anti-Doping Agency of Malaysia (Adamas). Head of Adamas Nishel Kumar, however, said they were yet to be informed by the Malaysian Amateur Athletics Union (MAAU) of the whereabouts of these athletes. “We contacted our counterparts in UK and they are

willing to assist us once we get the exact location of the athletes. Since we have ties with the UK agency, it will be cheaper for them to take the samples there instead of us flying all the way to Bulgaria,” said Nishel. Adamas met last week and sent their recommendations to the National Sports Council (NSC) and MAAU for consideration. It is believed Adamas is looking at two possible violations embedded in the World Anti-Doping Code. Article 2.3 of the Code speaks about failure to submit samples while Article 2.4 is on the failure to file the required information on the whereabouts of the athletes. Three other sprinters — Siti Fatima Mohammed, Siti Zubaidah Abadi and Yee Yi Ling — had earlier failed to turn up for the tests but gave their sample the next day after they were coaxed to do so by NSC directorgeneral Datuk Zolkples Embong. The results of Siti Fatima, Siti Zubaidah and Yi Ling returned negative.

students sent abroad by the government so that they can come back and share their expertise. The moment they refuse, of course, the government has the right to ask for repayment." Yesterday, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz (pic) said scholars working abroad and traced by the PSD must repay the expenses incurred including interest. Nazri said each case would be studied based on the existing law before taking follow-up action, if the Cabinet agreed on the matter.

IT is said that behind every great man there is a great woman. And she is almost certainly responsible for dressing him. A man relies on his wife or girlfriend to buy more than half of his clothes, a study shows. While he is responsible for purchasing 30 per cent of the items in his wardrobes, the woman buys 51 per cent, the Herald Sun reports. The rest is made up of gifts from friends and family. Clothes store managers say the "fear factor" is alive and well, with some men unwilling to incur the wrath of the opposite sex over wardrobe selections.

Airline fares set to rise AIR fares are set to rise after airlines were yesterday forecast to make just a fifth of the profits they made last year. A combination of higher oil prices and customers with less disposable income have resulted in the dire warning by the airlines' industry body, the Daily Mail reports. The International Air Transport Association forecasts that airlines will make profits of £2.4 billion (RM11.8b) this year, a 78 per cent drop from the £11 billion in 2010. This represents a significant deterioration from its forecast in March when it thought profits would fall by almost a half to £5.2 billion.

A double murder probe was launched after the bodies of Shania and Christine Chambers, 38, were found at their home hours before a custody hearing to decide the toddler's future, the Daily Mail reports. It was also claimed that the girl's 10-year-old sister Chelsea had a gun stuck in her mouth but her mother told her to run for her life and she fled through a back door of the house in Braintree, Essex, in England. Christine is understood to have been in a bitter court battle with her younger daughter's dad David Oakes.

No slowing down with single cashless ticket for travel by road and rail By Shahrim Tamrin shahrimtamrin@mmail.com.my

HAVING a single electronic ticketing system is long overdue judging by the government's intention to implement this in public transport services for many years. Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) chief executive officer Mohd Nur Ismal Kamal said the government aims for single cashless ticketing across operations to improve public transport. “Ever since the introduction of the Touch 'n Go platform, it has been identified that a single cashless system be part of the mechanism to boost the quality of public transport. In future, the commission wants to see 90 per cent of commuters with cashless cards for seamless journeys and faster transaction,” he said. The Touch 'n Go smart card was introduced in 1997 with the objective of

a cashless society. It was first used at the then Jalan Pahang Toll Plaza in KL in March that year. The system was subsequently adopted by Klang Valley stage bus company Cityliner in 2000. Mohd Nur pointed out the Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) system applied by government-backed public transport operators must be

gradually extended to private companies. “With AFC, this could soon pave the way for discounted fares and a kilometre-based system for many journeys to encourage more people to take up public transport," he said. “We want to emulate the electronic ticketing success like that of London’s Oyster card and Hong Kong's Octopus card and thus gain public confidence in public transport ridership in Greater Kuala Lumpur.” London's Oyster card was introduced in 2003 by local government body Transport for London (TfL) with the objective of reducing queuing times and speeding up journey times. It offers vast discounts on many journeys and environmental benefits as less paper tickets are used. With Oyster, TFL is able to gather data on the most popular journey times and patterns.

Hong Kong's Octopus card was launched in 1997 by Octopus Cards Limited, a consortium of major transport operators for the territory’s mass transit system (metro, rail, bus and ferry) and widely recognised as one of the world’s leading automatic fare collection systems and contactless smart card payment system. About 20 million Octopus cards are in circulation, three times the population of the former British colony, and it's used by 95 per cent of the population aged from 16 to 65 years, and generating over 11 million daily transactions worth a total over HK$100 million (about RM38 million). Octopus can be used for more than 2,500 service providers across different businesses including transport, parking, retail, vending and kiosks, schools, leisure facilities and access control for residential and commercial buildings.

New system will benifit commuters ● From pg1 “When everything is in place, we will discuss with Prasarana to merge the two systems as our new ticketing system design, specification and platform are almost similar to Prasarana’s ticketing.” Both concurred the new AFC system for Prasarana and KTMB would bring greater benefits to commuters for faster and more reliable transactions at the gates. Stating the system would leverage on the present 'Touch n Go' platform, Aminuddin said: “The integration process between both parties would take a couple of months to complete. "It is most likely the ticketing integration between KTMB and Prasarana will take place in 2013.” He said a common ticketing system was identified as part of the National Key Results Areas in the urban public transport laboratory which had summarised seven big ideas in realising government's objective of achieving 25 per cent usage of public transportation modal share by 2012. At the Government Transformation Programme (GTP) Open Day in December 2009, urban transportation leaders had outlined seven big ideas which include station integration and integrated ticketing across the Klang Valley, Bus Express Transit, extra carriages for KTM and LRT, Integrated Transport Terminal, Bus Rapid Transit and enforcement initiatives.

One seamless, cashless trip JUST one cashless card for rail and bus services. The new cashless multimodal ticketing card is expected to provide convenience to Klang Valley commuters by 2013. For example, an office executive staying in Shah Alam and working in Pandan Indah can board the KTM Komuter train in the morning rush hour by simply tapping a cashless card before entering the platform. Upon arrival at KL Sentral, she will simply touch the card at the exit gate and then walk to the elevated LRT sta-

tion. She will then tap the same card at the LRT station to board the Kelana Jaya line train to the integrated Masjid Jamek station. At Masjid Jamek, she walks up to another platform by using a special lane — without having to go through the turnstiles at the Masjid Jamek exit — to board the Ampang line train. It is only at the Cempaka LRT station would the executive tap the card at the exit. When she boards the RapidKL feeder bus from the LRT station to her office in the Pandan Indah business centre, she taps the same card for

boarding and alighting from the bus. It is one seamless journey without multiple tickets to improve accessibility and providing hassle-free connections. Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad (Prasarana) group managing director Shahril Mokhtar said completion of integration stations at Hang Tuah, Masjid Jamek and Titiwangsa by third quarter of the year would hold the key to the activation of Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) system. “The sooner works on station integrations are com-

pleted, the better. If possible, I want the AFC system to start by December,” he said. For someone who regularly takes the LRT to work, Shahril has full empathy for the public call for one ticket for all. “People have been waiting for this kind of system for many years. We are done with the planning stage and next year will be the crucial time for us to deliver,” he said. He also said the cashless system initiative for bus services has already begun via Prasarana’s subsidiaries Rangkaian Pengangkutan Integrasi Deras (RapidKL).

Its new bus cashless ticketing system ‘Rabbit Card’ was introduced in February with encouraging response from passengers. The RapidKL cashless system is considered to be as good as cash, with the aim to encourage rakyat to migrate to public transportation. "I understand students prefer cashless card to travel by public transport around Klang Valley. It's convenient and hopefully people from all walks of life would take public transport including office workers and corporate executives."

Volunteers contribute

WITH a keen interest to help the less-fortunate, volunteers have been contributing at Anjung Singgah. Siti Nur Intan Fazira (pic) from Selayang said she had learnt about the shelter through news reports and wanted to help out while waiting to further her tertiary education. Being involved in volunteer work for the first time, Siti said she was tasked with kitchen responsibilities such as serving food, washing plates and ensuring order in the kitchen. “I hope to continue volunteering here on weekends even after my study course commences” she said. Dang Wangi Rela member Marina Yaacob from Batu Caves, who has been working at the shelter since it opened, said the job has been meaningful. Marina, 41, said it has been her longtime intention to contribute to society by helping old folks and doing volunteer work. According to her, this is her first time after two years of service in Rela. Her responsibilities at Anjung Singgah include screening the homeless and conducting safety checks. “As a Rela member, we are trained on how to communicate with people from all levels. So far, working here has been satisfying but we have to be patient with the homeless as they have their moods,” she said.

Shelter helps the homeless get back into society By EE ANN NEE ean@mmail.com.my

HELP is at hand for the city’s homeless at the Anjung Singgah shelter in Jalan Hang Lekiu. A one-stop intervention centre set up by the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry to tackle vagrancy, it is managed by the National Welfare Foundation (YKN), the ministry's auxiliary corporate body on welfarerelated issues. Like its name ‘Singgah’ suggests, the centre, which opened its doors on April 9, is a temporary shelter for Malaysian vagrants and not a permanent refuge for them. Homeless folks who seek help at Anjung Singgah are given free meals and accommodation for two weeks in an effort to help them look for jobs and thus deter them from wandering the streets. “Anjung Singgah is focused on helping the homeless with employment. Our vision is to ensure that none of them are marginalised,” said YKN executive officer of the legal and advisory unit, Aida Abdul Jalil, who is also secretary to the working group that oversees the operations of the shelter. The homeless undergo grooming, counselling and

ON May 12, The Malay Mail's expose chronicled how 40 vagrants, many of whom are Malaysian, have made the pavement along Jalan Pudu their home. Their plight touched the hearts of readers, who expressed their dismay at the hopeless situation these vagrants faced. In the first of a two-part series, The Malay Mail goes behind the scenes at the country's first homeless shelter, Anjung Singgah, to find out what makes the volunteers do what they do and how one man's life has changed, thanks to a helping hand that gave him a second chance.

motivational talks during their stay and are encouraged to apply for jobs. The facilities in Anjung Singgah include a cafeteria that can accommodate 100 people, 38-bed male and 38bed female dormitories, two prayer rooms, bathrooms, a laundry area, as well as rooms for interviews, health checks and counselling. As of May 23, some 1,699 homeless people have walked into the centre. About 117 have registered with them and 48 have successfully attained employment. “We hope those who have been employed would be able to work for a long time, at jobs that make them happy and not merely getting themselves employed,” said Aida. She said that from May 24, Anjung Singgah had also be-

came a referral centre where non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the public could refer homeless people to. “Given time, we hope to get more employers to assist by offering jobs. When we have more jobs, our clients can benefit from a more extensive selection that may better suit their liking,” she said. For 36-year-old Aida, who has been with YKN since 2005, spending the extra time helping the homeless, is akin to being involved in volunteerism work, which gives her the chance to contribute to society and the opportunity to help get more people off the streets. “If I can help one out of 10 homeless people find their ‘dream job’, or at least something they enjoy doing, why

not? Working directly with such people in need has been satisfying and I see the results immediately, like the happiness on their faces. No one wants to live on the streets. Sometimes, they are just trapped in such situations. Most of the time, they are left with no choice.” According to Aida, the homeless are on the streets for various reasons, such as drug addiction and even family or health problems. “We get all types and it’s really not easy for them to get employment after spending years on the street. But if we can help them to get a job, particularly one they like, it’s really rewarding and satisfying for us — that’s when we know they once again, have a chance to lead a more productive life. "I have met homeless folks who are inspiring and amazing. They want to be better but some things were just not in their favour. They’re not homeless because they want that. Given the opportunity, they want a way out. Despite being homeless, they want to do something to have a better life,” she said, adding that with Anjung Singgah's assiatance, they can to get back into society.

From homeless man to butcher

LIFE took a better turn for former homeless man Hedytullah Sufian after receiving assistance from Anjung Singgah. “My life, then and now, is a vast difference,” said the 36year-old, fondly known as Hedy by his colleagues. Hedy is now a butcher at the Daging Segar Farm Fresh outlet at Taman Megan Sri Rampai, Setapak. He started working at the outlet three weeks ago through Anjung Singgah’s help and now receives accommodation, meals and a salary from a caring employer. “I leart how to carve beef and identify the types of meat parts as well as the valuable parts of the animal. This job is a stark contrast to my life previously,” he told The Malay Mail. Hedy, who for five years previously, made a living as an art-

ist at the KL Central Market, said he and his friends could not afford to pay the booth rent when the fees increase d. “We had no capital so my friends returned to their hometowns. I had no other options but to take to the streets and was homeless for a year,” he said. The bachelor, who now draws on a freelance basis, said he could not turn to his family as there were problems and they could not accept his presence. “Being homeless was a destitute life, living penniless and being devoid of the basic necessitates. Eating and drinking were uncertainties and I was plain hungry especially on rainy days. I looked at people eating and wanted food so badly,” he recalled. With no place to stay, Hedy slept at bus stops and five-foot

ways of buildings and survived through the free food distributed by non-governmental organisations. So when some of his homeless mates told him about Anjung Singgah, he went there immediately. “I really didn’t want to live like that. I wanted to change. That’s why I went to Anjung Singgah. When there’s a chance or opportunity, we should not pass it up,” said Hedy. Nurfid Farm Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Syed Salim Alqadri, who took in four homeless people from Anjung Singgah, including Hedy, is now requesting more manpower for his Daging Segar Farm Fresh outlets. “I have no complaints about them because they want to work. Life must have been hard for them

Abdul Azeez, who is also an Umno Supreme Council member and the Baling Umno division chief, joined 66 others who were bestowed the honour which carries the title ‘Datuk’. The Putera 1Malaysia Club is a youth-based non-governmental organisation and it has notably initiated several humanitarian missions, most recently during the earthquakes in Japan and New Zealand. National football coach K. Rajagobal was among those who also received the PJN from the King.

DATUK ASMAWI KASBI, who was sworn in yesterday as the new president of the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ), says cleanliness will be one of his priorities. "My target is to help the council become one of the best local councils and to achieve this, we are going back to the basics by cleaning up Subang Jaya," he said during his oath-taking ceremony at the council headquarters here. "This includes fixing damaged roads, keeping drains clear of de-

bris to prevent flooding, and improving lighting in dark areas. We will also take over waste management from Alam Flora." He added there was a need to inculcate good maintenance culture among residents. "Our society has yet to fully develop good societal ethics and on this aspect Malaysians in general can learn from the Japanese," he said. "Towards a cleaner and healthier community, enforcement of environmental laws will also be a priority." Asmawi, a civil servant for the past three decades, served 15 years with the Federal government and 15 years with the Selangor government. He graduated with a Bachelor of

"I will soon be meeting residents throughout the municipality to discuss various issues," said Asmawi, adding that the schedule of his meetings will be announced in due course. "The council currently has an annual revenue of RM197 million and 95 per cent of this will be used for the betterment of Subang Jaya residents."

French firm targeting RMAF deal By Marhalim Abas mabas@mmail.com.my

FRENCH aerospace company Dassault Aviation is set to open an office here soon, signalling its intention to win a lucrative fighter aircraft contract from the Malaysian government. The Malay Mail was informed by defence industry sources that the decision to open the office here “within the next one month or two” was a clear statement by Dassault that “it was serious” in offering its Rafale, which the company described as the only omni-role fighter, for the Royal Malaysian Air Force's (RMAF) multi-role combat aircraft (MRCA) programme. Sources told The Malay Mail that although the MRCA programme was comparatively small, Rafale’s image, which has yet to win an export order, would be boosted if Malaysia chooses it to fulfil this requirement. Dassault's Rafale is one of the four aircraft reportedly in the running for the MRCA contract. The other contenders are the United States' Boeing F/A18E/F Super Hornet, Eurofighter Typhoon and the Swedish JAS-Gripen. RMAF chief Tan Sri Rodzali Daud was quoted recently as saying that “the air force is looking at acquiring between 12 and 18 ultra-modern fighter jets per squadron, to replace the aging

MiG-29N Fulcrums by 2015. Ideally, we want to operate not more than two types of fighters for ease of logistics, maintenance and the like.” The air force also operates 18 Sukhoi Su-30MKM MRCA procured back in 1999. Apart from the Sukhois, RMAF has in service eight Boeing F/A-18D Strike Fighters in its inventory. The Hornet is the older variant of the Super Hor-

nets. Defence analysts pointed out that although the Super Hornet was rumoured to be RMAF's preferred candidate, Dassault’s entry into the local scene indicated the French believed that the tender would be done in a transparent and competitive manner. Last December, Dassault officials met with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in Putrajaya. No details of the meeting have come out but it was believed that as a result of the meeting, Dassault had decided to actively pursue the MRCA programme.

The tender for the programme is only expected to be announced at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace (Lima) show this December. All four fighters bidding for the MRCA contract are expected to take part in the show. Back in 1993, Dassault offered its then latest fighter aircraft, the Mirage 2000-5, to RMAF

in KL was closed shortly after it failed to be selected for the programme. The firm also took part in the Lima exhibition in 1993. The Rafale, which has been combat-tested in Afghanistan and Libya, is in service with the French Air Force and Navy. It is still being consid-

Boy, 15, faces murder sentence A 15-YEAR-OLD boy is set to become the youngest Victorian to be sentenced for murder over last year's fatal stabbing of Indian student Nitin Garg, The Age reports from Melbourne. Defence lawyer Marcus Dempsey told Justice Paul Coghlan yesterday that the boy, who cannot be named due to his age, was one of only a dozen youths to have faced murder charges in the Supreme Court, in what the judge described as a ''desperately sad case from everyone's point of view''. The boy has pleaded guilty to murder and will be sentenced at a date to be fixed.

Brickfields scrap hub Jalan Sultan Abdul Samad back lanes now haven for trash collectors

THE alley behind Jalan Sultan Abdul Samad is turning into a haven for scrap metal dealers and collectors. The Hotline Roving Team was despatched after receiving an alert from the Selangor & Federal Territory Association for The Mentally Handicapped, located in nearby Wisma Harapan, saying the area is being used by scrap dealers and collectors. Association president Datin Fauziah Idris says it has become a dumping ground for scrap iron, plastic and paper businesses located at the back lane of the Golden Photo Shop. Fauziah says several other problems have cropped as a result, including: • Dirty environment • Noise from breaking metal objects • Drug addicts and vagrants collecting rubbish • Drains being used as toilets • Thefts of metal items from the association's school and surrounding areas • An increase in rat population "In spite of several ap-

peals since October to City Hall about the illegal activities in the area, the problem still continues until today," Fauziah says. "We hope the authorities will put an end to the illegal activities in the area." During checks by the Roving Team yesterday, we noticed several individuals, including foreigners, sorting out scrap metal and other waste products in the back lane. An area about 50m away seemed to be where the scrap material, including tins, plastic containers and papers, were being stored.

● CITY HALL director-

general Datuk Mohd Salleh Yusop says they will work with police on this. "We will send our team down there soon and take action. "If we have to catch them, we will not hesitate to do so as long as they stop their activities. "Our priority is to ensure the city is safe. Therefore, we want the public to lodge reports with the authorities if something is not right rather than keep quiet about it."

Waiting for buses a daily headache FORCED to wait for more than an hour for your bus to arrive is a major irritation for commuters. For V. MALATHI, this is what she is forced to put up with every day. MALATHI from Kajang says she is frustrated with the U40 bus service in the area, which has become worse in the past few months. She says the frequent delays makes life difficult for her and believes the number of buses plying the area are not able to accommodate the number of travellers from Hentian Kajang to Pasar Seni. MALATHI says many leave their homes as early as 5.30am to catch the first bus out of Kajang. "There are times in the

morning where I wait until 6.30am for the bus. There have been times where I have waited from 6am to 6.50am." She says there have been times when no bus arrives and many are forced to walk to town to board the express buses instead. "Most of us use the RapidKL monthly bus pass and have made advance payment for these passes. It is unfair for us who have paid fares to be kept waiting for hours for a bus to arrive." She says the service affects those who need to be at work between 8am to 8.30am. The problem crops up again in the evenings, where she has to wait a long time at the Jusco Ta-

man Maluri bus stop. "Sometimes, it's too packed and many cannot get in." She says there are instances where, after a long delay, buses will arrive all at one time. "I've sent complaints via email to RapidKL and received replies assuring the problems will be looked into. I was informed an additional 18 to 20 buses would be added for Kajang commuters but so far, nothing has been done."

● SYARIKAT Prasarana Negara Bhd Group Director, Bus Division, Datuk Mohamed Hazlan Mohamed Hussain says: "The route U40 buses, which ply Jalan Reko Terminal to Jalan Sultan

Mohamad, makes 57km round trips daily." He says the buses are scheduled at an interval of 20 minutes during peak hours and on weekends. "With recent heavy traffic coupled with the increase of vehicles plying the route, the delay is unavoidable, especially during peak hours. "We are trying to rectify the matter to improve our services. This includes our plan to increase the number of buses along the route next month." RapidKL customers are welcome to give send feedback to their helpline at 03-78852585, 7am to 8.30pm (Mon-Fri) and 8.30am to 5.30pm (Sat-Sun).

Bills keep coming DISSATISFIED with the broadband coverage in her area, HAYATI MD ZIN decided to terminate her Maxis Broadband service at her home in Bukit Serdang. However, she discovered she could not as she was bonded by a one-year contract with the service provider. After the year was over, she assumed the service would automatically be terminated. However, two months later, she received a statement from Maxis informing her of her backdated payments. "I never used the broadband service after I assumed it was terminated. I wrote a complaint to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and was informed the matter was forwarded to Maxis." HAYATI says Maxis agreed to remove all other charges as

there was no usage and told her to return the complete broadband set and clear her backdated amount of RM80, which she did. However, she received another bill in April stating she had to pay another RM40. "I sent another complaint to MCMC and Maxis but no one has responded. I was told there would not be anymore payments and now I get this bill."

● A MAXIS Communica-

tions Sdn Bhd spokesman says: "We have contacted HAYATI and informed her the waiver on her broadband charges would be reflected in the May bill. This was also indicated in our written communication to her. HAYATI has accepted our explanation and we are pleased to have amicably resolved this matter with her."

Maniac pizza delivery boy almost runs down driver ON May 26, ANDREW WONG from Setapak was driving out of his condominium at 8.25pm when his car was almost hit by a Domino's Pizza delivery rider on a motorcycle. ANDREW says a collision was only averted as he was driving slowly. The problem, however, did not end there. He says 15 minutes later at a small bumpy road in Danau Kota, he had another run-in with the same pizza delivery boy.

"I couldn't recognise the number plate of his motorcycle but it had distinctive white rims. He was riding fast, cutting in and out of traffic in a small narrow road, without a helmet, only a cap." ANDREW says he tried calling the Domino's Pizza helpline but the staff on the other end was rude and seemed annoyed he was trying to lodge a complaint. "After some checks, I found out the Domino's outlet that delivers in my area is the

branch in Crystalville, Setapak. "I went there and while trying to explain the matter to the manager, the delivery rider appeared and threatened me. "He warned me not to mess with him in front of the manager."

● A DOMMAL FOOD Services Sdn Bhd spokesman says: "Domino’s Pizza would like to clarify we are committed to our '30-min-

ute delivery guarantee’ and this is achieved through the efficiency of our business processes and thorough training of our staff that has been developed over the last 50 years. "This, along with a clear mapping of our stores’ delivery area, ensures Domino’s Pizza riders have sufficient time to deliver our products to our customers within that time frame. However, in the event it is not achieved, a free regular pizza voucher

is given to customers. Our riders are not penalised. In all Domino’s Pizza stores worldwide, we emphasise 'hustle on the feet and not on the street'. "At Domino’s Pizza, safety is our top priority and we are dedicated to ensuring our delivery team strictly adheres to traffic regulations while being courteous to other drivers. "All riders are aware dangerous driving and rude behaviour is not tolerated. We

are taking this complaint seriously and are currently investigating the matter. If found guilty of violating the two company ground rules of fighting and breaking traffic rules, the rider will be subjected to severe disciplinary action, including possible dismissal of service." ANDREW says the problem still persists and hopes they "train their riders on road safety as well as manners".

PERIL AVERTED: The gate to the substation was wide open (left) but is now locked (right) with a padlock (centre) — Pix: SAMSUL SAID

IT is supposed to be a danger zone cordoned off from the public. Yet, this Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) substation in Jalan SS2/18, Petaling Jaya, is free for all to enter, no thanks to its unlocked gate. A concerned resident, WONG YEE MAN, says the gate at the power house had been left open for more than six months and despite

alerting the Petaling Jaya City Council, no action was been taken. WONG says there is a big playground next to the power house and he is afraid children playing there will one day enter into the dangerous grounds. "I am concerned for the safety of children playing in this neighbourhood. They are young and do not know

about the dangers of trespassing into the area. "With the entrance of the power house left open, anyone is able to get in. "Children often play at the playground after school in the afternoon and I see them there till 7pm. I cannot imagine if one of them were to venture into the substation and play with the equipment in there. They

could get electrocuted."

● A TNB spokesman says the substation gate has now been locked and routine checks will be carried out in the area from time to time. When contacted, WONG confirms the substation gate is locked and he looks forward to TNB's checks in the area.

Runaround over dead phone line RAHIMAH HUSIN from Taman Ampang Indah, Ampang, was about to make an important phone call to her son in Johor with her fixed line at home on May 13 when she realised her line was disconnected without prior notice. "I haven't faced any problems with the telephone line and I've been paying my bills on time."

When RAHIMAH called by Telekom Malaysia's (TM) customer service on May 16, she was promised a staff would update her on the status and rectify the issue within three days. "I did not receive any calls from TM on May 19, so I made a second report and again, they informed me the case was still under investigation.

"On May 25, I called TM again and they informed me the issue was being handled at a higher level without providing me with any additional information. "I feel TM is not taking my complaint seriously and I hope they will fix this."

● A TM spokesman apolo-

gised for the inconvenience caused to RAHIMAH and

her family. "After an investigation, TM’s technical team discovered the situation faced by RAHIMAH stemmed from a faulty cable outside her house. "Our technicians replaced the wiring on May 27. We have contacted the customer and she confirmed she can now use her telephone."

PETALING JAYA Classless club (June 6)

A mockery of marriage ARE we serious about endorsing an Obedient Wives Club in Malaysia? While we strive to work towards being a developed country with a First World mentality, wouldn't such a club demonstrate we still belong in the Dark Ages? Being a developed country is not only about having the infrastructure but a shift in mentality as well. With such a club, do we really expect the world to take us seriously?

T h e e x i s t e n c e of a n Obedient Wives Club in Ma l ay s i a d e m ons t r at e s the shallow thinking of Malaysians and understanding of the role of sex and what constitutes a happy marriage. No right thinking woman would take responsibility for her husband's infidelity and the social problems in the world. The husband needs to be accountable for his actions. Taking a second wife,

although acceptable in Islam, is demeaning and an insult to the woman he promised to love, cherish and protect when committing to marriage. Whether explicit or implicit, these are the expectations of a woman when she leaves the security of her parents' home and entrusts her life to a stranger. This should be honoured and not betrayed. If sex is a factor to being unfaithful, it is a flimsy excuse. There are

many solid marriages devoid of sex. That is the test of true love and the bond that unites two people together. That is what commitment is all about. Otherwise, it is a mockery of marriage. The irony is that its vice-president, Dr Rohaya Mohamad, who professes to be the authority in this area of expertise, is one of four wives in her own marriage. It seems she is not practising what she preaches. That undermines the credibility of

PJ Buck up transport systems (Feb 17)

Improvements needed I AM a big fan of the KTM Komuter service. I commute often from Batang Kali to Kepong Sentral since moving from Pasir Mas, Kelantan, last May and so far, I can say I am satisfied with it. If a few areas are improved upon, this service would get an "A" grade. Peak hour rushes must be improved. I don't know how or what it takes to add more coaches during these times but it's something that must be done soon.

It is not only the standing part that commuters have to bear but the squeezing. During other times though, the ride can be quite pleasant. I feel privileged to have access to it. Then there's this matter about changing trains and the wait, at least for those living beyond Rawang (Serendah, Batang Kali, Tg Malim). Yes, I realise it is not economical for the Seremban train to continue after Rawang.

So, passengers heading to these stations have to wait sometimes up to an hour for the connecting train. H o p e f u l l y, KTM Komuter can make it every 30 minutes for the Rawang-Tg Malim route. Mat Cendana

Fortunately, there were avenues to voice our concern and I am pleased at the outcome. Too often we have seen projects going ahead without

regard for the communities and the environment but this time, I felt it was different.

No fear

Crowding and not adhering to the timetable are the worse culprits. I can see the staff are trying their best to help but the senior managers don't seem to care (maybe because they are driving Perdanas instead of taking the train themselves). I suggest the prime minister, ministers or VIPs try taking the Komuter or LRT during peak hours, unannounced and without bodyguards, to understand the kind of life ordinary people experience.

IF we are to be jailed for defending ourselves from an attack, what should we do instead of self-defence? Either you die or the person who attacks you dies. Are you ready to be raped or should you kill your intruder? Are you prepared to let an intruder hack your child to death or should you beat him with a spanner? Would you allow a robber to stab you in the neck or allow his accomplice to fire a shot at you? I cannot speak for others but I feel the law should be changed so that we are allowed to defend ourselves, within reasonable means, without fear of prosecution.

An ordinary life I AGREE the government should look into improving the existing system. I am a frequent commuter who takes the train from Serdang to KL Sentral and onwards to Ipoh at least twice a week. I love trains as I had lived in Europe for more than 10 years. First, our Komuter train should have six cars instead of three during peak hours. It should also have a clear timetable, good connectivity and interchangeability of tickets.

An avenue for discussion and people to listen AS a concerned citizen and a resident, I was relieved feedback from those like me who attended the Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit project

this organisation. I would advocate instead for a club that builds the self-esteem and confidence of women. A club that supports women to see the sky as the limit in fulfilling her contribution to family and society. A club that advocates and allows her to develop to her full potential and live her best life. Only then can we stake a claim to being developed.

Fun on the line KUALA LUMPUR

Liyana sings the blues about too much tweeting By Che Az cheaz@mmail.com.my

THE moral of the story is simple: If you're a celebrity, do not try to kid around when you are talking through microblogging platforms or social network sites. That's the lesson learnt by young actress/singer Liyana Jasmay (pic) who was recently "under fire", when her "personal" tweets to actor Fizz Fairuz (real name Mohd Fairuz Zainal Abidin) became a hot topic among industry followers. The 23-year-old had apparently ruffled feathers with her "lovey dovey" message to Fizz, which also sparked rumours that they were an item. The gossip turned hotter when it was revealed that Fizz was already in a relationship with 25-year-old Almy Nadia, another young actress. "It would be better for me

to keep quiet and not respond to this issue anymore. I never thought it would get this far or this huge. As the rumours evolved, everything started to sound very weird. "All I can say is, it was just a status we updated on Twitter and it meant nothing more than that. At first I didn't see anything wrong by putting up the status since Fizz and I are like brother and sister. What started as fun is no longer funny anymore," Liyana said. She is now regretting every bit of it, and has decided to be extra careful with her "jokes". "I honestly do not see anything wrong with what I did, but now I have learned my lesson. I will try not to update anything which may mislead the public. I will re-

frain from having too much fun on the Internet and reserve my inner feelings to myself. It's better to lie low for now. No more Facebook, Twitter or what so ever. So yes, having less fun is better for me."

In fact, I’ve just finished shooting a commercial over three days. Right after this, I will be busy preparing for my concert in Guangzhou in August. Immediately after my concert, I will be going straight into a shoot for a movie and at the same time, I will also be recording my Mandarin album,” she

said at the launch. However, Yung did not reveal the amount of fees she got as the spokesperson for the product. She only revealed that it was a matter of "trust and confidence between her and the company". “I don’t know about the fees, but all I know is that I get a lot of free samples to try!” she joked. “I am quite satisfied with the product.” On good friend Nicholas Tse’s rocky marriage to wife Cecilia Cheung, Yung said: “Well, as a 'sister' I refuse to comment on their relationship, but no matter what happens, I will support him (Tse).” Yung was delighted to be back in Malaysia again. “I’ve been here a lot of times. In fact, I was here last year. There is always a reason for me to be back. I am happy to see my fans here too!”

Antywan Ross also was sentenced yesterday to pay more than US$325,000 in restitution. Ross, who now lives in Berkeley, California, headed RDA Group. He claimed the Atlanta-based firm ROME

David Thorne said yesterday he is very proud to have an Italian-American artiste of her stature come to the Italian capital. He quoted US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as saying "human rights are gay rights and gay rights are human rights." Not quite invited to birthday bash IN Berlin, a teenage girl who forgot to mark her birthday invitation as private on Facebook fled her own party when more than 1,500 guests showed up and around 100 police officers, some on horses, were needed to keep the crowd under control, The Huffington Post reported. Eleven people were temporarily detained, one police officer was injured, dozens of girls wearing flip-flops cut their feet on broken glass and firefighters had to extinguish two small fires at the 16th birthday party in Hamburg.

Consensual! Former IMF chief's lawyers to argue against use of force in sexual assault case F OR M E R Inte r nat i ona l Monet ar y Fund le ader Dominique Strauss-Kahn (pic) formally asserted his innocence yesterday to charges he tried to rape a hotel maid, but the drama unfolded outside the Manhattan courtroom as protesters jeered him and lawyers for the housekeeper said she was eager to testify despite a "smear campaign" against her. Strauss-Kahn's attorneys offered a rival account of the May 14 encounter at his US$3,000 (RM9,000) a night Manhattan hotel suite, hinting again the French diplomat might argue the encounter was consensual. By the end of the case, "it will be clear there was no element of forcible compulsion in this case whatsoever," defence lawyer Ben Brafman said. "Any suggestion to the contrary is simply not credible."

Sarah Ferguson bares all SARAH FERGUSON has revealed in an interview how she suffered emotional abuse at the hands of her mother. The Duchess of York bares her soul in a new six-part reality show Finding Sarah, made for the Oprah Winfrey Network, reports Mail Online.

Strauss-Kahn, looking resolute, declared "not guilty" in a strong voice in a routine legal proceeding that lasted less than 10 minutes as wife, journalist Anne Sinclair, watched. He said nothing else, save for "yes" when acknowledging he received a standard warning he could be tried in absentia if he failed to appear. As Strauss-Kahn left the courthouse, a throng of angry hotel workers, many in their uniforms, chanted "shame on you" as he left in a black sport utility vehicle. "The protesters wanted to send the message that New York is the wrong place to mess with a hotel worker," said Aissata Bocum, a Ramada Inn housekeeper. The 50 or so workers, mostly maids, were bused in by their union. Brafman said the attorneys would not try the case publicly, but referred to Strauss-Kahn's not-guilty plea as "a very eloquent, powerful statement that he made that he denies the charges." The 62-year-old Strauss-Kahn was scheduled to check out of the Sofitel hotel, near Times Square,

Killer bacteria source remains elusive

THE source of a killer bacteria remained elusive yesterday after Germany announced initial tests on suspected organic sprouts had proved negative, while the outbreak's death toll grew to 23. The probes were carried out on a farm in the northern state of Lower Saxony after regiona l ag r ic u lture minister G erd Lindermann said a link had been found to the main areas hit by the E. coli outbreak. Results available from 23 of the 40 samples of seeds, water, ventilation and work surfaces tested indicated they were free of the bacteria responsible for 23 deaths and more than 2,000 p eople falling i ll, t he st ate's agriculture ministry said. "Investigations are continuing," the ministry said, adding that it did not expect "any shortterm conclusions." Federal Agriculture Minister Ilse Aigner said Germany would maintain warnings against eating sprouts, tomatoes, lettuce an d c u c u mb e r s , p ar t i c u l ar ly in the nor th of the countr y, until the origin had been pin-

pointed. But Andreas Hensel, head of the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment, said that "it is possible we shall never be able to identify the source" of the contamination. Aigner said investigations were continuing with checks on vegetable supply chains and producers up and down the country. She was to travel to Luxembourg today to attend an emergency m e e t i ng of Eu rop e an Un i on agriculture ministers which is to discuss aid for farmers who are unable to sell their vegetables because of growing consumer fears. the day of the encounter. The maid told police he chased her down a hallway in his Sofitel hotel suite May 14, tried to pull down her pantyhose and forced her to perform oral sex. The maid's attorney, Kenneth Thompson, said his client would testify at trial and tell the truth despite the "smear campaign that is being committed against her." He was referring to media reports alleging a conspiracy against Strauss-Kahn and suggesting her story was invented. The defence has also alluded to having damning information against the maid but has not released it. "The victim wants you to know that all of Dominique StraussKahn's power, money and influence throughout the world will not keep the truth about what he did to her in that hotel room from coming out," Thompson said. Al-Qaeda behind Ramadi explosions Al-QAEDA'S front group in Iraq has claimed a spate of explosions in the western city of Ramadi that killed 10 people last week, a US-based monitoring service said yesterday. The explosions on June 2 also wounded 15 other people near provincial government offices in Ramadi, capital of the mostly Sunni province of Anbar and a former insurgent bastion. The SITE monitoring service said the Islamic State of Iraq claimed the bombings in a communique posted in an Islamist forum on Saturday. "They targeted the criminals of the various security agencies in the government complex in the city of al-Ramadi, which consists of the headquarters of alAnbar province, the provincial council and the police command building," the ISI statement said, according to a translation provided by SITE. Insurgents had initially set off a roadside bomb, followed by a suicide blast and then a vehicle packed with explosives was detonated. A fourth explosion, a car bomb driven by a suicide attacker, later targeted Ramadi's main hospital. Ramadi has frequently been attacked over past months. — AFP

Capturing 'the' moment with Nikon

By Loong Wai Ting waiting@mmail.com.my IMAGINE going for your honeymoon and the photos you took of your loved one didn't turn out the way you wanted them to — all because of a camera that isn’t up to the standard, or worse, shouldn’t have been made in the first place. Yes, we've all been "victims" at one point or another to lousy picture quality and a camera that is not user-friendly at all. No doubt that consumers are being spoilt for choice when it comes to the latest models of cameras, and it

might seem a little hard to pick the right one. The truth is, finding one that suits your needs and style isn’t that complicated. Cameras don’t come cheap these days, especially when it seems that almost everyone is now a shutter bug (even phones have cameras anyway). Again, a professional DSLR (digital single-lens reflects) might not be for just about everyone. There is more than just clicking the shutter button (and the complicated manual that comes with it). Now, what if you’re into photography but don’t know where to start. Which camera suits you best? If you’re looking for a good entry level camera, it is advisable to do some research beforehand. If you don't, you might fall blindly for a DSLR, and regret your decision later. For first timers, a good entry level camera like the Nikon Coolpix S9100 is worth checking out. One of the

A DEPENDABLE GADGET: Nikon Coolpix S9100 is solid and sturdy and it's built to last

coolest options that come with the S9100 is the panoramic mode. It is easy to use. Just swipe the camera from left to right and it will automatically combine your multiple shots into one single shot. It’s quite amazing, though, that the picture quality itself is nicer, even when the light is low. The camera’s excellent image sensor offers one of the best low-light performances so far. If you love playing with shadows and natural lighting, without having to use the flash; just put up the ISO sensitivity slightly

higher to absorb more light from your surroundings. But the S9100 can go up to ISO 3200 before your photos become visibly grainy (noisy). What this reviewer loves about the S9100 is the automatic shooting options, without having to go through getting all the different ISOs right and complicated settings to capture “the” moment. Just changing the shooting modes, which is easily done by flicking the switches on the top right hand side corner. However, if you prefer your photos to turn out crisp looking, the S9100 might not be for you. If you’re like this reviewer, who is particularly picky about the picture quality and sharp colours, it is best to reconsider your choice.

On the other hand, if you don’t mind much about the quality, the camera is one highly recommended gadget either for travelling or business use. The camera’s body is one solid build. It does look sturdy. Unlike some point-and-shoot cameras in the market, this one is built to last. The body is compact and strong, and feels "safe" to hold. If you always have the urge to double wrap your fragile stuff when you travel, you might not worry much about this camera. It also fits into any bag with small compartments and even pockets. The bottom line is, Nikon has another solid point-and-shoot range added to its resume especially with the Coolpix

S9100. It offers consumers a compact camera performance which takes nice photos at an affordable price. The Coolpix S9100 comes with a fast shutter speed as well, so that you will be able to capture fast-moving subjects without getting all the blur shots. With 18x optical zoom, that’s equivalent to carrying a 25 — 450mm lens — only lighter. Not only that, the S9100 is also equipped with a highdefinition video recording capability with its 1080p movie capture mode. The video quality is on par with that HD camcorder. The slight problem is that, you’d also capture all the noise when you zoom in and out of the lens when you’re recording your video. You can play your videos easily on your HDTV by connecting the HDMI cable to the built-in HDMI port on the camera. The videos come in .MOV files, which can be uploaded directly onto your Facebook or YouTube, without going through files conversion before that. The Nikon Coolpix S9100 is all about its lens. There are plenty of things to experiment around with the camera and if you’re really looking for a good camera to try out as a beginner, the S9100 might just be the option you can get at an affordable price.

HP and DreamWorks high-kick 'Kung Fu Panda 2' onto the big screen HP and DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. have united once again to create the studio’s action-packed 3-D film Kung Fu Panda 2, which is currently showing in cinemas. For ultimate performance, production artists at DreamWorks Animation relied on powerful HP Z800 Workstations to achieve industry firsts while designing everything from whirling water and lush

green lands to battle scenes filled with thousands of kung fu characters. For more than a decade, HP and DreamWorks Animation have worked side by side to create revolutionary technology that has helped craft eye-popping, heartracing and awe-inspiring animation features like the Shrek series, How to Train Your Dragon, Megamind, Kung Fu Panda and now Kung Fu Panda 2. In Kung Fu

Panda 2, Po is now living his dream as The Dragon Warrior, protecting the Valley of Peace alongside his friends and fellow kung fu masters, The Furious Five. Po’s new life of awesomeness is threatened by the emergence of a formidable villain, who plans to use a secret, unstoppable weapon to conquer China and destroy kung fu. Po must look to his past and uncover the secrets of his mysterious origins; only then will he be able to unlock the strength he needs to succeed. HP’s high-performance workstations have been finetuned to meet the detailed and demanding creative needs of DreamWorks Animation. The HP Z800 Workstations are radically faster — as much as 50 per cent for some applications — than their predecessors and are the workstation of choice for several studios around the world. The additional high-speed Intel processing cores, memory and option

drives enabled artists to effectively work on multiple shots concurrently and far more interactively than before. “The creative ambition for Kung Fu Panda 2 again pushed DreamWorks Animation to the cutting edge of technology. The film’s lead characters are some of the most intricate ever created and the environments are among the richest and most vibrant in CG filmmaking,” said Ed Leonard, chief technology officer, DreamWorks Animation. “HP

technology continues to help us cross these new boundaries, develop new standards for the filmmaking industry and ultimately create enjoyable films for audiences around the world.” The original Kung Fu Panda film, released in 2008, used more than 50 terabytes of data and required nearly 25 million render hours. With the switch to stereoscopic 3-D and the ever-escalating creative aspirations of the filmmakers, Kung Fu Panda

2 used 100 terabytes of data and required more than 55 million render hours. “HP is committed to bringing innovations to market that help customers like DreamWorks Animation unleash their creative genius,” said Jeff Wood, director, Worldwide Marketing, Workstations Global Business Unit, HP. “Working closely with industry leaders in film and animation inspires us to deliver top-performing technology that take their creations to the next level.”

Journey of self-discovery

By CHE'AZ cheaz@mmail.com.my WHILE Malaysia is fast becoming the location for many international film makers and television producers, particularly India and Hong Kong, Malaysian producers are looking elsewhere to spice up their projects. Global Station Sdn Bhd, for instance, recently flew its cast and crew to Cordoba and Madrid in Spain to shoot its latest project, Suria Di Cordoba. Using the breathtaking views of Cordoba, which is rich in history when was once under

Muslim governance, the 26-episode drama series is expected to meet viewers of Astro Prima (Astro 105) from today. It will then be on the channel every Tuesday at 9pm. Why Cordoba and Madrid? Well, apart from the title itself, the setting is weaved into the spiritual journey of a young woman in her quest to "find herself", and in turn gets closer to God. The Islamic, spiritual and historical side of the story might be done subtly, but the conflicts that involve certain individuals who are in need of guidance might take the focal point of the series. It is also an "awakening" of sort for some of the characters. Sari Yanti plays the lead character as Suria Khadijah Parker, who travels to Spain to not only track her European roots but also as part of her humanitarian and charity project. It is also her effort to escape the material world. In her battle and effort to

Sari Yanti said she decided to take on the challenge not solely because it was shot in Spain and all the wonderful background. "I also have faith and confidence in this drama series for its story and plot. Honestly, I was at the early stage of carrying

my second baby during the shoot and I still wanted to do it because of the script. It was well written and for me, personally, I can feel the emotional grip even when I'm off the set," she said. Fahrin Ahmad, whose schedule is packed until the end of the year, had to turn down other projects so that he could complete his task as one of the main cast of Suria Di Cordoba. "It's my commitment. I did not hesitate to do it after reading the script and I knew I could not let this role escape me. The emotions are quite heavy and because all of us need to be in Spain for more than 10 days, I think it helped us become the characters. Everybody was there to help each other," Fahrin said. As for director Mohamed Feroz, he said the series does not only tell the story of a beautiful charitable person, it also discusses and touches the real definition of human love and most importantly one's love for God.

"I personally think the series would help spread positive vibes to the viewers. It will also show all the hiccups and imperfection of any family and how everything can be resolved," Feroz said. Sari Yanti, Fahrin Ahmad and Ady Putra are joined by Lisdawati, Alif Satar and many other strong actors. Suria Di Cordoba will also feature a special appearance by the '70s popular actor/singer Rahimah Rahim.

Finding models with the 'X' factor By JEREMY TAN lifestyle@mmail.com.my READY, set, pose! Gearing up to show the world the best modelling Malaysian

women the nation has to offer, the official launch of X Top Model Search 2011 marked the start of something unprecedented in local modelling history.

For one, it is the first of its kind to be supported by the Ministry of Tourism Malaysia and the Hong Kong Tourism board. XTMS 2011 also boasts being the first local model search that will be featured internationally on Fashion TV. Funnily enough, it also takes pride in being the first model search that will portray behind the scenes footage… in 3D. That amusing factoid aside, it’s refreshing to see Malaysia taking a leap on becoming more prominent on the international modelling scene with this international-scaled endeavour. XTMS 2011 organising chairperson Victoria Vikki

Tjong said the search started from a passion to promote Malaysia. To do this, XTMS 2011 is set to find women that epitomise the unique qualities of Malaysian ladies, or rather, the “X-factor”. To find that perfect composition of beauty, charisma, and talent, the search poses challenges to determine whether these aspiring models have what it takes to grace the modelling world internationally. “We have 10 challenges; some of them are X-Character, X-Look, and X-Walk,” Victoria said. She couldn’t divulge the details of every challenge, one could easily tell what some of them entail.

“All in all, we’re looking for the X-Factor. I’m satisfied with the quality of entries for the search so far,” Victoria said. About 300 women had tried out for the search. The headcount will thin to a third of that, and then finally the 10 finalists will be handpicked to go overseas to train with international top modelling agency, Elite HK Model Management Ltd. “Malaysian women have a very exotic look, regardless of their ethnic background. When you look at models from China, for instance, they all look the same! You can’t tell the difference. But here, you can see the difference, the warmth, boldness, and car-

By JEREMY TAN lifestyle @mmail.com.my THE crews are thinning weekly, leaving the best and most popular vying to topple one another with the slickest moves at Showdown 2011. Eight crews remained as Showdown 2011 resumed another week with the dancers battling it out to renowned boy band sounds. With a theme such as this, working together as a unit counts as topmost priority, as embodying such a concept relies on perfecting synchronised movements. Guest judging in this most recent show was Damian Mikhail of VE fame, sandwiched in the judging panel between regulars Maple Loo and Joe Flizzow. Due to last week’s fiasco during the face-off between Force 136 and Blazing Squad that almost culminated in a full-out brawl, the judges were probably more alert in eyeing for any foul play that could earn the perpetrators a disqualification. Thankfully the night proceeded smoothly and without problems, though the sentiment couldn’t be extended to Stepholic’s performance that started off the show. Stepholic’s dance to Step by Step by NKOTB was a boring affair of rudimentary choreography, blatantly simplistic yet still managing to be messy. Though somehow it was still enough to impress Maple, who said they were “like dragons rising up”. It was contrasted by Joe’s rational comment that it could have been a lot better. HMC Phlow salvaged the dignity of the event by bringing the house down with Get Down by Backstreet Boys (BSB). Oozing boy band vibes with organised smooth moves, they nailed the theme and greatly entertained, with the judges sharing a consensus that it was a “great show”. The former worst of the night, Rokusteps did a 180 and stepped back into the game with NKOTBSB’s Don’t Turn Out The Lights, a flashy and entertaining showcase of their talents, albeit slightly desynchronised. Maple mentioned their imperfect synchronisation while commending the nice composition and moves while the other two said it was one of

del Search 2011 hopes to find models with international quality

debut amongst the global fashion elite. “Instead of America’s Next Top Model’s elimination process, the winner will be chosen based on accumulation of points,” Victoria said. Now that's a slightly differ-

ent game than what we’re accustomed to this time around. In any case, this exciting new platform for models may just spark a new breed of international quality from our shores.

'Showdown 2011' is now down to seven their better performances. Being true standouts last week, Bounce Stepperz looked larger than life while dancing to, well, BSB’s Larger Than Life. Wearing alien-like uniforms and glittering like a Twilight vampire, their robotic style and marvellous execution truly accentuated their unique identity and ensured their stay for another week. The judges were all thumbs up, with Joe saying that they were on the way to being a very good crew. All-girl crew Panic disappointed this time around, reverting back to their typical formula of relying on their sexiness and stripper-like dance with NKOTB’s Hangin Tough. Full of attitude and girl-power, but ultimately boring, Maple and Damian were nonetheless totally into their act, though Joe said it wasn’t their best and that the use of ropes was something they could have done without. Blazing Squad’s emphasis seemed to be on flashiness with heavy use of fiery power moves to the song The Call by BSB. It was messy and besides the power moves; everything else was average, though the judges generally liked their act. As Joe said, they took more risks, and it paid off. Painfully disappointing, Force

(From left) Maple, Damian and Joe Flizzow — Pics: SHARUL HAFIZ ZAM

136 became the worst of the night, starting and ending well, but everything in between was a beach-ball disaster, dancing to NKOTB’s Summertime. Although Joe said they embodied the theme, Maple shot them down, saying the act was a total depletion of life force. Then Elecoldxhot hit the stage with BSB’s Everybody, and when they started dancing, their quintessential boy band vibe, staggering performance and surging energy received the loudest of cheers and thus cementing themselves as the best of the night. Overwhelmed by the rest, Stepholic ended up facing Blazing squad while Force 136 challenged Rokusteps

to crawl to safety from the night’s bottom four. Blazing Squad defeated Stepholic fairly easily, but it was the match between the latter crews that drew much debate between the judges. Both rocked the stage so hard it took much deliberation before the judges finally gave the win to Force 136. In the end, it was the end of the road for Stepholic. With seven crews left, preparing to rock hard to this week’s Rock theme, how will they fare? Catch the show this Wednesday at 9.30pm on 8tv and see for yourself! A sweet addiction partition where the staff manufacture the candy while on the other side you will find a variety of candies in cute little jars.

By anu venugopal anu@mmail.com.my WHEN it comes to candy, if it is not sticky it just isn’t right. Staying true to its name, Sticky’s hard candy is certainly sticky and sweet. With sweet inspirations coming all the way from Australia, Sticky is as an interesting an outlet as it is by name. The first thing one notices when you enter a ‘Sticky’ outlet is the

If you are the type who is curious about how food is made then you will find ‘Sticky’ an interesting spot to visit. Every day the sweet loving staff at ‘Sticky’, headed by manager and Wan Haizul Hazli make 80 kilogrammes worth of rock candy (also known as lollies). With a variety of

sugar flavours available, from Lime, Mango and Coffee Mint, the trained staff often roll out the candy seven times a day to cater to the sweet toothed Pavilion visitors. The process of making the candy differs from one flavour to another but one thing is for sure it does require time and skills. For every time they make the candy, there are three staff dedicated to making the sweet treat. During this writer’s visit to the store, lime was the flavour of choice. The whole process was a little complicated, as the staff poured hot sticky candy on the workstation, spread it out thin, cut them into sheets and then pulled the flexible sweet

many times over. After the candy is rolled into bars, it is then cut into little bites and given to visitors (or audience) to try. Colourful and physical, the customers at ‘Sticky’ who managed to witness the making of candy from raw sugar to a sweet snack seemed transfixed with the whole process. Featuring a unique blend of theatre and retail, ‘Sticky’ gives something a little extra to its customers. The unique production process itself reveals the candy in new light. Knowing that the sweet Watermelon candy was done through the handy work of the staff and not the machine,

makes it a special sweet. All staff who are responsible for the making of the candy are trained before getting their hands sticky with candy. “It is not difficult to make but it is rather hot. You also have to be quick so that it won’t go hard,” said Wan. The 30-year-old revealed that one of the most popular flavours among customers is the Passion fruit, followed by a mix. ‘Sticky’s’ candies are not just for individuals wanting to add a little sweetness in their lives, but also is an ideal gift for corporate events, special events like birthdays and weddings. The talented people at Sticky can also customise your favourite flavours like Apple, Blackcurrant and Kiwi and add in words like ‘I Love You’ and ‘Happy Birthday’ when purchasing six kilogrammes worth. Sold at a reasonable price (a 120gram jar is RM16.90 and 190gram is RM19.90) these sweets will last for a long time. With over 15 flavours to choose from, ‘Sticky’ candies make life a little sweeter. Visit them at 1Utama and Pavilion and find out for yourself.

Divine pairings for the discerning palate

GASTRONOMIC FLAVOURS: The array of food went well with Guinness — Pic: KHAIRULL AZRY BIDIN

YOU could call it “the real man’s drink”. Encapsulating power, goodness, and communion (as an advert phrases it) into a delightful black brew, Guinness has long since been enjoyed by testosterone-laden individuals partaking in merriment and camaraderie the world over. However, did you know

that the taste of the beverage varies with the food you enjoy alongside it? If you ever savoured a serving of the said brew and wondered why it tastes astonishingly sweet as opposed to a previous experience that induced a lingering bitterness, you now have your answer. So with this undoubtedly

being a revelation to even some Guinness lovers, a question arises: just what dish can evoke the best lip-smacking taste ever savoured by Guinness drinkers? Throwing a feast at Hakka Restaurant in Jalan Raja Chulan in an experiment to find the perfect edible companions for the acclaimed stout, Guin-

ness Malaysia had prepared an incredibly delectable course. It was a fitting gourmet that provided various culinary offerings for the discerning palate to pair with the Guinness stout. The first dish in this “journey of discovery”, as Guinness called it, was a wondrous serving of fresh oysters. Globally acknowledged to be a divine pair, oysters thrown in a glass and drowned with the black brew then taken in one go are simply sublime. The spectrum of flavours the palate enjoys the moment you but into the oyster is such a magical experience. Codfish also proved to be a lovely partner with the brew. The steamed offering served with soy sauce provided a nice chewy texture to be enjoyed with the stout while enhancing its taste. Slightly out of the ordinary were the Guinness-infused prawns. Instead of the dish complimenting the brew,

the stout itself was seeped into the prawns, making for a strong-flavoured, saucy munch. Another delectable pairing was the crispy pork knuckles with the Guinness stout. The crunchy outer layer, the skin, as well as the tender juicy meat of the knuckles augmented the taste of the black brew, giving it a stronger, heavier flavour. An unlikely joy to the taste buds was the stir-fried bitter gourd with bean sprout pairing. Gulping down a bout of Guinness stout after partaking of the bitterness evokes a contrasting, lovable sweetness. It was easily one of the most enjoyable flavours savoured from the black brew. For those who desire something hearty, the chilli crabs would definitely fulfill that. Combine the spicy infused crustacean with the titular beverage yields a powerful tingly play on the palate, a strong taste that hearty people would

undoubtedly love. Ending the culinary journey with much satisfaction were the servings of fried Hokkien mee. The black soy sauce the soft noodles proved another magical companion with the stout. The dish enhances the sweetness of the brew while seemingly refining its smoothness. Simply put, it was an enjoyable marriage between food and beverage. By majority, turns out the most popular pairings were the pork knuckles, the Guinness infused prawns, and the steamed cod fish. Whatever the case, all the dishes were a joy to the taste buds. With this experiment concluded, Guinness hopes to take this test more public, and hopefully the rest of us can experiment and find our own well loved pairing. It goes without saying, with the black brew, eating has proven to be a stomach filling, lip-smacking experiment. — By Jeremy Tan

Tale of revenge

By anu venugopal anu@mmail.com.my

Title: Dendam Author: Affifudin Omar Publisher: Buku Fixi Rating: 8/10 DENDAM certainly has the makings of a good contemporary movie. With the looming presence of cardinal sins including lust, greed, pride, vanity and anger, it is an interesting tale of a man on his quest for revenge and his rollercoaster journey through life. Protagonist Khalil Gibran is a successful businessman who has gone through a lot in order to get to where he is in life. The ex-cop turned businessman tortured prisoners held at the

police station, actively involved himself with illegal schemes and spent money to keep his

wife happy while having affairs with women everywhere. After years of hanging around with the wrong guys and doing the wrong things, he slowly has a change of heart and decides to turn over a new leaf, albeit with resistance from the people he once betrayed. For most parts, Dendam is an easy read with themes of kidnapping, money laundering and affairs being central in the storyline. Written in urban Bahasa Malaysia lingo, the depth lies in the many sins the protagonist has committed which is rampant and happening in today’s modern Malaysian society.

Tease your brain Title: The World’s 200 Hardest Brain Teasers Author: Dr Gary R. Gruber Publisher: Advantage Quest Publications Rating: 5/10 THEY say brain teasers are meant to improve critical-thinking methods and sharpen the mind. While this book may not have the world’s hardest brain teasers, it sure does give readers a lot to think about. From logic puzzles, riddles,

math problems and mental games, The World’s 200 Hardest Brain Teasers provides readers and problem solvers a chance to strategise their thinking and figure out the answers. The beauty of this exercise is that there is no time limit for most of them and there may be more than one way to come up with an answer to a question. Luckily for those who are stumped with the right answers, there are the solutions to refer to. — By anu venugopal

For the blood hungry readers Title: The Vampire Diaries: Stefan's Diaries Vol. 3: The Craving Author: L. J. Smith, Kevin Williamson & Julie Plec Publisher: Harper Teen Ratings: 4/10 TO those who have no clue about the series, this book is the final chapter of the trilogy series, Origin and Bloodlust. The story follows the young vampire Stefan Salvatore who flees New Orleans to Manhattan, where he vows never to harm another human again. But just when he thinks he’s left his past behind, Stefan discovers he can never escape his brother Damon who swears to make Stefan’s life miserable for all eternity. Damon poses as an Italian count to marry into one of the New York socialite families. To save the family from Damon, Stefan marries the younger sister. His action, however, causes the entire family massacred by an unknown villain who seeks revenge for the death of Katherine. This book however, pales in comparison to the previous two. The story drags a bit and is too convenient with a sudden end. But if you read Origin and Bloodlust, you might as well finish the series with this book. — By

Michael has more planned for his badminton centre

BADMINTON runs through his veins. Michael Lee started off as a contractor in the 70s but eventually ventured into badminton, which is the love of his life. In 2001, Michael started the Michael Badminton Academy (MBA) at Taman Megah, Petaling Jaya, to give the children in the neighbourhood a place to play and promote the sport. Five years later, he set up another centre in Bandar Puteri, Puchong. "My friends thought I was crazy to start something in Puchong," said Michael in jest. "I put all the negativity aside and concentrated on my goal. It paid off as the courts in Puchong are fully utilised daily." Boasting 32 courts under one roof, the Bandar Puteri centre was inked in the Malaysia Book of Records as the largest badminton hall in the country in 2004. However, Michael has

been renting the land in both PJ and Puchong. He recently acquired two acres of land in Kota Warisan, Sepang to build his own centre. "There are another two acres of land available to the plot I just bought. With the help of my partners, we may buy it too. "With four acres, we can have more than just badminton. There would be futsal, table tennis and wushu. We can turn it into a mini stadium in the area," added Michael. Michael hopes the Sepang centre will be fully operational by the time he turns 59 on Oct 12 next year. "That’s my birthday gift to myself. I have slightly over a

KC hopes for change

THE son of Michael Badminton Academy owner Michael Lee, Kok Choong (pic) — or better known as KC — is bullish the "Hope for Change" badminton charity campaign initiated by his father will unearth talent. In fact, Kok Choong is no stranger to changes after having left life as a quantity surveyor to help his dad manage the centres. "I started working with my dad since Febuary. I don't have any regret as nothing beats working for your dad. Also, it's all about badminton...something I also love," said Kok Choong, 29. "The Hope for Change project started in March and runs till December. We train and motivate underprivileged children and hope they will benefit from our trainings." The programme has 53 participants from various orphanages around Puchong and PJ. However, Kok Choong hopes to see more children joining in the fun. Among the media partners for the campaign are Redberry and The Malay Mail. "It isn't only about badmin-

ton. Through badminton the children learn about discipline and character-building. It's also our way of saying that a career can be made in badminton, either as coach or administrator." MBA also organises training-cum-motivational camps and tournaments including the 2nd Youth Team Championships on June 8-11 at the Puchong centre. "It's all about promoting the sport and the industry while doing our bit for society," Kok Choong added.

Strengthening the brotherhood THE Michael Badminton Academy (MBA) is not all about badminton. It's about friendship as seen in the lads from SMK Buyong Adil, Tapah. The group, who left school in 1997, are among the many regular players at MBA Bandar Puteri in Puchong on weekends. "We've known each other for more than 20 years. We were all schoolmates in Tapah and yet we stayed in touch till today," said G. Kalai Arasu. "It's a good place for us to train as we stay nearby. There are many facilities here too." A project engineer with Nestle, Arasu admitted it was the similar interest that strengthened the bond between him and his friends. "We enjoy our sessions very much. It's always fun meeting up and sweating it out on the courts."

Datuk K. Rajagobal will not let the excitement of playing against English Premier League teams distract him from the more important task of qualifying for the World Cup. Malaysia will host Taiwan in the first-leg of the World Cup Asian Zone qualifiers on June 29 in Kuala Lumpur. The away game is on July 3. They will meet Singapore next should they beat Taiwan. "These are not just English giants but European stalwarts. The prospect is exciting of course but qualifying for the World Cup is of national interest," said Rajagobal, who was present at the Liverpool Summer Game Tour Press conference yesterday. "Our training and preparation are geared towards the Taiwan matches. When it is

time to play the three English teams, we will do whatever is necessary." The three EPL teams set to play Rajagobal's boys next month are Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea. The Malaysian team are bracing themselves for a hectic schedule with the World Cup and Olympic qualifiers. "We also have to play Lebanon, home and away. There is also the Asian Under-19 championship, in which some of my players are involved," added Rajagobal. The game against Lebanon is the second round of the Olympic qualifiers. This team is handled by Ong Kim Swee. Some players are in both the World Cup and Olympic squads. However, Rajagobal relishes the mouth-watering prospect,

and he knows for certain that his players will benefit from playing against some of the biggest names in world soccer.

Taxmen make Sentul pay

The opening day of the Kuala Lumpur League saw Income Tax whip Sentul 5-2 in a Div 4 clash at Pantai Stadium yesterday. Income Tax led 2-1 in the first-half with a brace from Mohd Syamie Shamsuddin with Inderjit Singh replying for Sentul. The second-half saw the taxmen more dominant with Mohd Mohsin Hanim, Zarizi Abadisalam and Joe Hanza Zakaria get-

ting three more. Upinderjit Singh pulled one back for his team. In Div 4, the 18 teams have been split into two groups, with two matches on most weekdays. Meanwhile, Sunday 2030 and Taylor's University College drew 1-1 in an earlier Div 3 fixture. The goalscorers were Jagjit Singh and Davinder Singh respectively.

The faces of the Liverpool players are expected to be as red as their shirts when they play a Malaysian Selection at Bukit Jalil on July 16. This is because the match will be played under very hostile weather, for the Reds at least. The clash is slotted for 5.45pm when temperatures hover around 36-39 °C. Will Liverpool be able to handle the hot and humid conditions? "Why not?" replied Ian Ayre, Liverpool's managing director. "The team have played in Singapore and Bangkok before. They know what it would be like." Ayre may have forgotten, though, that those matches were played at night when

temperatures drop to about 25 °C. Ayre was not on unfamiliar territory when he flew down yesterday morning to attend yesterday's Press conference. He used to live and work in Malaysia. "I even have a home in Malaysia and my girlfriend is Malaysian. I'm also used to watching matches at mamak stalls here," he pointed out. Ayre added that just before he left London for Malaysia, he spoke with Reds captain Steven Gerrard about the matches in Asia. Gerrard told him he was looking forward to his first trip to Malaysia. The five-time European champions have always given Malaysia a pass when planning

their Far East tours. However, this time they found it impossible to ignore the estimated two million Reds fans. "At Liverpool, we take these games very seriously. The game in Malaysia will be an important part of our preparations for the 2012 campaign and it's a chance for all our fans to get up close and personal with their football heroes," said Ayre. Tickets are priced at RM388, RM108, RM68 and RM58 and are available online at www.ticketpro.com.my or at Ticketpro outlets. Early birds will receive a complimentary training pass with their tickets. Ticket sales will begin on Friday.

One down, one to go By G. PRAKASH prakash@mmail.com.my

The Selangor cycling team are now halfway towards achieving their two-gold target when team spirit led them to their first gold medal in Sukma yesterday. The team came out tops in the team sprint category at Velodrome Rakyat in Cheras. Hamdan Hamidun, Malek Marcus Macrone and Mohd Elmi Jumari were the proud cyclists. "All our training and hard work have paid off. We won because of the support we gave each other," said Hamdan. Hamdan said one of their advantages was they had been training together for the last five years and were familiar with each other. "Elmi and I had known each other since we joined SMK Section 11, a sports school in Shah Alam, in Form One. He knows my strengths and weaknesses and I know his." Hamdan was on cloud nine as his family members and friends witnessed him receiving the gold medal. "Winning the gold medal is

SPEED RACERS: Team effort paid off for Elmi (left) and Hamdan — Pic: RAZAK GHAZALI

a huge motivation for me and I hope this will drive me to achieve more at higher levels," added Hamdan. Elmi echoed Hamdan's sentiments, pointing out they pushed each other to the limit in training. He felt this was the first step for him and his teammates to move into the national team setup. "That's our dream. We know there is plenty of competition to get into the national team but hard work will pay off, just like it did today," said Elmi. For Malek, the past few weeks spent on endurance and speed were critical. "The coach put us through

the correct training at the correct times," Malek pointed out.

Win fails to please Zamar

By HARESH DEOL haresh@mmail.com.my

MALACCA coach Boycie Zamar rubbished talks his cagers are a force to be reckoned with in the Sukma basketball competition at Maba Stadium. "I'm flattered but I've only been with the team for a while. The other coaches have been with their players for a longer time. I'm sure they are better prepared than us," said Zamar. "We are now in the second round and we will see what we can do. It's a good challenge and I treat every team with respect. "I'm friends with all coaches but on the court, we are opponents." The Filipino watched his lads edge Sarawak 59-52 in a gritty match yesterday. However, Zamar was not too pleased with the conversion rate of his team. "We missed too many shots. There are many things we need to work on. But you know, it is always the responsibility of the coach if the team fail." Defending champions Johor will also see action in the second round after defeating Perak 72-57. Johor coach Yong Kian Ann is hoping his side will not face Malacca in the second round fixture. "Malacca are the best team in the tournament at the moment. I pray we will not meet them in the second round when the re-draw is done," said Kian Ann. "I've been with these players since they were young. I've seen them grow and they are all Johoreans. We don't believe in pinching players from other States." Just like Zamar, Kian Ann was not too pleased with the performance of his lads yesterday. "We've played better matches. These things should not happen as we can't afford to miss a single point in the second round. This is only the beginning and it's going to be a battle from Thursday onwards." Johor are set to beef up their side with Khaw Yeong Wooi. The centre is studying in Singapore and was unable to take leave earlier. "He couldn't take a long break but we still registered him. We hope to use him from the semifinals onwards. He will be a great asset to us," Kian Ann added.

Briton Murray set to play despite injury

ANDY MURRAY is on course to play the Wimbledon warm-up at Queen's Club after the world No. 4 practised for over two hours at the west London event this morning. Murray has been debating whether to withdraw from the grasscourt tournament, which started yesterday, after suffering a partial tear to a ligament in his right ankle during his run to the French Open semifinals. The British No. 1, who was beaten by eventual champion Rafael Nadal in the last four at Roland Garros, was unable to shake off the injury he sustained in a third round victory over Michael Berrer. Murray admitted he had to take pain-killers to get through the rest of his matches at the clay-court Grand Slam. And, after losing to Nadal, Murray said he would take a couple of days to see how the injury progressed before deciding if he should play at Queen's. However, he is keen to get as much time on grass as pos-

sible before Wimbledon and, speaking before his lengthy practice session at Queen's, he said: "It's definitely better than it was originally. It's feeling better. "It was a bit sore obviously when it happened and playing matches on it didn't necessarily help too much but's definitely better than it was and should be okay. "I haven't hit on the grass yet, so it will be two days of practice and then you are straight into the tournament. "It takes time (to adapt to grass). That's the only negative about doing well at the French is less time to prepare for the grass but I'd rather be in this position." — AFP RESULTS First Round Feliciano Lopez (ESP) bt Dmitr y Tursunov (RUS) 7-6 (7-4), 6-3; James Ward (GBR) bt Daniel Cox (GBR) 6-3, 6-1; Marsel Ilhan (TUR) bt Jan Hajek (CZE) 6-4, 6-4; Michael Berrer (GER) bt Ryan Harrison (USA) 7-6 (9-7), 2-6, 7-5; Arnaud

Lucic moving back into her game

FORMER Wimbledon semifinalist Mirjana Lucic of Croatia advanced to the second round of the Aegon Classic grasscourt tournament this morning, beating American qualifier Alexandra Stevenson 6-3, 7-6 (9-7). The 29-year-old Lucic made the semis at Wimbledon in 1999 as a promising 17-yearold, but was absent from the WTA tour for much of the last decade for personal reasons. After spending several years on the lower-tier ITF circuit, she is now back in the top 100 for the first time since 2000. Lucic has already earned a direct entry to Wimbledon this year, and is hoping to spring a surprise at the grass-

court Grand Slam tournament once again. "I feel I am playing really well again," Lucic said. "It feels great to have made it back into the top 100 after three years playing smaller tournaments to get my ranking up. I feel it just needs one little push, or one extra little bit of luck with the draw, to do something special." Lucic saved two set points in the second set against Stevenson, who also reached the Wimbledon semis in 1999 as a teenager, and who is similarly trying to battle her way back. "I played well when it mattered and I was really pleased about that," said Lucic,

who next plays fifth-seeded Roberta Vinci of Italy. Meanwhile, Briton Heather Watson passed her first test as a Top 100 player with flying colors this morning, coolly dispatching No. 15 seed Chanelle Scheepers in the first round. -- Agencies

LONDON: MOTORSPORT

Mixed response on Bahrain THE controversial decision to reinstate the Bahrain Formula 1 Grand Prix taken by the sport's governing body FIA was made after receiving a report saying that the political unrest in the country had stabilised, FIA president Jean Todt told the BBC this morning. Todt, the former mastermind behind Ferrari's success, said that FIA vice-president Carlos Gracia had been to Bahrain and decided after apparently indepth talks that everything was fine to return there on Oct 30. Todt's remarks came on the same day as a total of 24 doctors and 23 nurses went on trial in Bahrain for their apparent roles in the unrest in January and February which left 24 people dead according to the authorities — some of the medics claimed that they had been tortured into confessing. Todt was adamant FIA felt it was safe to return there, after originally calling off the March 13 race, though he did admit they would be constantly assessing the situation. "Our special envoy had many meetings in Bahrain, even with the human rights people responsible," said Todt. "He found a stable situation, a quiet one, and we unanimously agreed. "Carlos's report was discussed by the World Council and the decision was taken to accept to re-programme the Bahrain Grand Prix in 2011." However Avaaz, an international campaigning organisation, issued a statement in which they contradicted the FIA's findings. "Claims that calm has been restored and life is back to normal in Bahrain are completely untrue," said campaign director Alex Wilks. Australian star Mark Webber has been one of the few to publicly express his disagreement with the decision. "My opinion is unchanged since I was first asked about this in late February. Even though a decision has been made, I'll be highly surprised if the Bahrain Grand Prix goes ahead this year," Webber said on his website on Saturday. -— AFP

Xavi claims exciting Catalans are best in past two decades

BARCELONA'S ace midfielder Xavi claimed the European champions are the best team of the last 20 years and hailed Lionel Messi as the best player of all time. The Catalans swept all before them once again in the just-ended season and Xavi insists they come top of the charts from the past two decades. Barca completed a remarkable season at Wembley when they added the Champions League trophy to yet another Spanish league crown. The Spain international is well aware of some of the great teams in recent memory and he is of the firm belief that Barca's current crop of stars finish top of the pile. "There have been some great teams in history, Pele's Brazil, Johan Cruyff 's Ajax, Arrigo Sacchi's AC Milan but in the past 20 years this Barca are the best," he told

Bild. Messi? "He is the best player of all time — better than Diego

Maradona, Pele or Cruyff. We have to protect him as he is crucial. Without him we would not be what we

are," said Xavi. The only black mark on a fine season for Barca was the defeat to bitter rivals

Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey. However, Xavi was critical of the approach adopted by Jose Mourinho's men throughout the season. "Real were the hardest opponents but not because they played football but because they wanted to destroy the game. I like Manche ste r Un ite d ' s approach a thousand times better. It would be interesting to see what would happen if Real did play." Speculation prior to the Wembley showpiece suggested manager Josep 'Pep" Guardiola was on the verge of standing down but Xavi hopes the former Barca midfielder "stays forever". "Guardiola is very intelligent, very enthusiastic and very 'Barcelona-ish'. "He is a great manager and I hope he stays forever, if not as manager then as sporting director or president."

Germany set to earn a place in Finals

GERMANY can all but assure themselves of a place in Euro 2012 with victory over Azerbaijan in a Group A match at Tofik Bakhramov in Baku tomorrow (1am). After escaping from Vienna with a last-minute 2-1 victory over Austria last Friday, Germany can now go 11 points clear of Turkey — who will have four games left to play — with another win. "We have to be focused once more, and get the win," midfielder Toni Kroos told Kicker. "It can be our last major step towards the finals." The Germans were close to suffering a major disappointment against rivals Austria,

who would have been well worth a point in an impressive display before Mario Gomez snatched the winner in stoppage time. But Kroos does not believe it was a poor performance in Vienna. "In the first-half we had the game under control. Overall, we adapted well when we lost the ball in attack, and we were able to counter well," he said. Kroos will have another chance to nail down a place in the side with Sami Khedira one of two withdrawals since Vienna, with Simon Rolfes also out of the game. Khedira had been struggling with a calf muscle prior

to the Austria game, and while he did not aggravate the injury, it was decided not to push him into further action so soon again. "He has in the past two to three weeks made every effort to be ready for the crucial game against Austria," said coach Joachim Loew. "There were no major problems, the injured muscle is fine, but we do not want a risk, and so we have decided in consultation with him and the doctors that he will not play. " Rolfes suffered a pulled muscle before the Austria match. Loew called in Lewis Holtby and Sebastian Rudy from the Under-21 squad

to take their places. Arne Friedrich suffered a slight foot problem which has hampered him in training but he is expected to be fit. Azerbaijan have suffered an odd build-up to the game, overshadowed by a physical attack directed at coach Berti Vogts at a press conference. And the German legend hinted such incidents could eventually lead him to quit the job. "If I were not so good friends with our association president, I would have left long ago," he said. "I've seen a lot, but this is not something I expected. I do not understand this at all. I have no words."

Palermo's the best striking partner for Tevez MANCHESTER CIT Y'S Argentine star Carlos Tevez has named Martin Palermo as his favourite strike partner in his entire career — placing the Boca Juniors legend above former Manchester United teammates Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Malay Mail Tuesday 7 June, 2011

I made the right choice leaving AC Milan for Juventus — classy midfielder Andrea Pirlo

Tevez and Palermo played together at the start of the Argentine international's career at Boca, and lifted the Copa Sudamericana in December 2004 before Tevez moved on to Brazilian club Corinthians. The pair only shared the pitch for six months, but the

27-year-old Tevez still places Palermo or El Titan at the top of a list of illustrious strikers he has played with over his career so far. "I can say about Martin that I have never felt so secure with any other player. It didn't happen with Rooney or Ronaldo,"

Tevez told Ole as he celebrated the inauguration of his new charity in Buenos Aires yesterday. "He gave me a confidence that nobody else has given me, this gives you great trust and means a lot... he is a phenomenon, he has his own God

watching out for just him. That is why the fans love him so." Tevez is now training in Argentina with the rest of the national squad, who are preparing for the Copa America which they begin on July 1 with an opening match against Bolivia.

SEPP BLATTER announced that Spanish opera singer Placido Domingo is his somewhat bizarre choice to advise Fifa on their problems. Domingo will join 88-yearold former US secretary of state Henry Kissinger and Dutch legend Johan Cruyff as Fifa's advisers. Blatter told CNN: "These gentlemen are more or less advisers, they are not the experts but advisers. They should be a kind of 'council of wisdom', which my executive committee would not like because they think they are the council of wisdom! "I have also contacted the Spanish singer... Placido Domingo — he is happy, he is proud that he is part, and Kissinger also. People say he is an old man, but he is a wise man."

Crouch's no quitter PETER CROUCH says he will not quit international football despite his latest snub by Fabio Capello. The Spurs striker, 30, was angry at failing to even be a substitute against Switzerland and started just five of 37 England games under the Italian. Crouch was thinking of following Ben Foster, Paul Robinson and Wes Brown by making himself unavailable for his country. But after weighing up his options, he has decided to continue and hopes to be given a run-out in the friendly against Holland in August.

Expensive Pastore PALERMO have slapped a whopping £44 million (RM216.3m) price tag on Argentine sensation Javier Pastore, after snubbing a bid from Chelsea for him. Pastore, 21, has established himself as one of the hottest young properties around with his stunning form for the Serie A side in the just-concluded season. And that has made him a top summer target for Barcelona, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, AC Milan and Manchester City as well as the managerless Stamford Bridge outfit.

'Dirty dog' Giggs HE was already facing shame and humiliation after his secret fling with Big Brother star Imogen Thomas became public knowledge. But yesterday love-rat Ryan Giggs stood accused of the ultimate act of betrayal — following sensational new claims that he had an eight-year affair with his brother Rhodri’s wife, Natasha. Relatives were stunned by the latest seedy allegations surrounding the Manchester United legend — once regarded as one of the most clean-cut characters in football. Gigg’s disgusted aunt Joanna Wilson stormed: "He's just a dirty dog." "He has no morals. It was one thing having an affair with Imogen, but this is said to be with his brother’s wife, for God’s sake." "I could almost understand if it was someone else, another footballer’s wife, then so what? But not with his own sister-in-law. And it went on for such a long time." Joanna said she also felt sorry for dad-of-two Giggs’ unsuspecting wife Stacey saying: "She should kick his a*** and take him for every single penny he’s got." It was also revealed that some family members are now asking whether Ryan, 37, could be the father of his own nephew — Rory and Natasha’s son conceived in the middle of her affair with the multi-millionaire player.

Barca set to get Sanchez

BARCELONA are set to steal Manchester City target Alexis Sanchez from under their noses. The winger, 22, joined Italian side Udinese in 2006 and has been linked with Europe’s top clubs this summer. City bid for the highly-rated Chile international, while Inter Milan and Juventus have also been in talks to sign the player. But Sanchez rejected a move to City and his agents are negotiating terms on a five-year deal with Barca, who are ready to offer a fee of around £22 million plus midfielder Jeffren Suarez, 23.

Kalou looking forward to thrill fans on playing tour

LIKE many of his teammates striker Salomon Kalou (pic) was in Asia just three years ago, but for a longer period as he represented his country at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The Ivory Coast international was a key player for his side as they reached the quarter-finals then, scoring in games against both Serbia and Australia before eventually losing out to runners-up Nigeria. It was an extraordinary experience for the now 25year-old, and he is looking forward to returning to Asia, where he also played one game for Chelsea that summer before linking up with his international teammates. "Playing in China in the Olympics, I really enjoyed it, it was a good feeling representing my country in such a big event," he recalled. "Even

though we weren’t close to the Olympic village where the other athletes were it was still a special event, we were in Shanghai but would have gone to Beijing if we had reached the semifinals.’ An outgoing and friendly character, Kalou also enjoys the novelty of playing in and meeting fans from new countries. "It is really good to go and promote the image of the club abroad in other countries and cultures," said the former Feyenoord man. "People are really happy to see the club come to their home countries to play games, and it is great to go there and sell out big stadiums. "I enjoy meeting the fans — these are the people that keep the club alive all over the world. With no fans there is no club and they’re all part of

the big team the club is. We are all working for the same team and it’s a good mutual feeling to meet each other and share in the good moments." Having been a Chelsea player since 2006, Kalou has experienced three tours to America in addition to his short stay with the rest of the group in China in 2008. "It is cool to go away with your friends also, in a good atmosphere because you have had a holiday beforehand," he explained, "and you work hard but you have a good time and look forward to the new season. "It’s an exciting time. I like going out and getting ready before the competitions like the Premier League start. You know it is not so serious yet but you can prepare well against good teams, who sometimes play in a different way."

Red Devils out for No. 20

ALEX FERGUSON insisted Manchester United will not be relenting in their pursuit of retaining their Premier League crown next season — having overhauled arch rivals Liverpool with their 19th title to become the country's most successful side ever. Instead, Ferguson is looking for his side to be victorious once more next season and to add a 20th league title. "There's a responsibility as the manager of Manchester United. It doesn't go away," he told Inside United. "I'm not going to take it easy because we won the title. Hopefully we'll be better next season. The only thing you can do at this club is win — that's all that matters. "We have to carry on, there's

nothing else you can do. We have a responsibility and expectation to live up to and that carries on next season. "As I've always said, United should accept a challenge. We're good at that and, next season, we'll accept anything that comes our way." United's 19th title, in the end won at a canter some nine points ahead of secondplaced Chelsea, was particularly special to Ferguson and the United supporters, as it finally gave them more league titles than the Reds from Anfield, and Ferguson believes the latest title has dismissed the dissenting voices that suggest the current United crop are not a great side. "It's a great feat winning this league, It was Liverpool's time

in the 80s, it's our time now" said Ferguson. "This was a particularly special one because it means we've won the title more than anyone in the country. It's history and it's great for the tra-

dition of this club. "The players have been great, I think they deserved it because there were a lot of great performances. I'm dismissing all that nonsense that it's not a great United team."

Villa in no rush to name new boss

ASTON VILLA will not be rushed into making a decision over who will replace Gerard Houllier as manager. Club owner Randy Lerner (pic) is an admirer of former Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti but the Italian's announcement that he plans to take a year's sabbatical from the game has scuppered any hope of him taking charge at Villa Park. Mark Hughes was the oddson favourite with the bookmakers after quitting Fulham but

Villa insisted the timing of his departure and their own vacancy becoming available was pure coincidence. Former England coach Steve McClaren, one-time Tottenham manager Martin Jol and Bolton manager Owen Coyle are believed to be among the candidates under consideration, but sources close to the club have indicated there is nothing imminent on the horizon. It could be the end of this week or even into next week

before there are any developments. Villa striker Darren Bent admits the players have no idea who will replace Houllier after he stood down for health reasons, but the England international believes the fans will give the new man time to stamp his mark on the club. "Every day I am checking on television and speaking to people to see who it's going to be but you just don't know," he said.

"Hughes was supposed to be in the running but he has gone out now and I couldn't tell you who it's going to be. I couldn't even tell you who is in the frame now because it's so up in the air. "But I'm sure, whoever the new manager, the fans will give him time. "It's a big, big job to take and I'm sure the fans will be behind him whoever he is. It's been a difficult season, but we still finished ninth and we need to build on that," he said.

Dilemma for young athletes as two competitions clash By VIJHAY VICK vijhayvick@mmail.com.my

FIVE sports are being held simultaneously at the national schools (MSSM) and Sukma level, and this is rocking the boat at certain venues. The sports are basketball, tennis, rugby, handball and netball. At some venues, there are disgruntled team officials who questioned the wisdom of holding both events at the same time. However, there are several schools of thought. The first school reckons the clash of dates is a blessing in disguise as it opens the door to more athletes to showcase their talent. Otherwise, said Sukma deputy organising

chairman Datuk Abdul Jalil Abdullah, one might see the same athletes dominating both stages. Jalil pointed out the matter was discussed and agreed upon, and his view was shared by a senior official in the Education Ministry’s sports unit. There are some others who think there should be due process — meaning the athletes should be allowed to climb up the rung instead of being catapulted onto the national stage. “The development of athletes can sometimes be stunted if they are fast-forwarded. They should be allowed to

develop, taking one step at a time. What’s the rush, anyway? A baby who has just started crawling should not be pushed to run,” said one official. He went on to suggest that Sukma be restricted to the 18-23 age-group. However, all parties agreed the school holidays were the best time for both events for various reasons, such as availability of athletes and accommodation. MSSM uses school hostels to billet athletes. It is also estimated 45-55 per cent of Sukma participants are school kids.

“Even the universities are having their break now. So it allows them to take part as well,” said Jalil. Jalil refuted suggestions that this caused a drop in standards in the national schools tournaments. “Each State has their development programme. Not all of them are selected for Sukma and as such, the others can take part in the schools meet,” he added. Another Education Ministry officer insisted there would always be enough athletes to compete in national schools events. “We don’t want to compete

with Sukma, but rather complement it,” she said. “But I’m also glad to note some athletes opted to compete against their peers instead of at a higher level. That’s a good way to progress,” she said. Penang tennis coach Francis Su argued athletes may not know better. The decision should be left to the coaches to decide which athletes can survive the stiffer competition. “Sukma is tougher. Athletes get better exposure,” he said. He lamented though the influence of parents in the decision-making process.

Martin strikes twice for France

MARVIN MARTIN (right) celebrated his international debut by scoring twice this morning to help France rout Ukraine 4-1 in a friendly. An experimental French side, which featured only one starter from last Friday’s 1-1 European Championship qualifying draw against Belarus, scored three goals in the last four minutes to give the visitors a flattering, though much-needed victory. Anatoliy Tymoshchuk opened the scoring for the hosts in the 54th minute, but Kevin Gameiro scored his first goal for France to equalize four minutes later. Martin then scored with a low drive in the 87th before taking the corner that set up defender Younes Kaboul for the third goal. Martin completed the scoring in injury time. — AP
