Fatally-shot Sabahan had gone beserk before, says cousin By AIZAT SHARIF aizat@mmail.com.my

THE 42-year-old Sabahan, Darwis Dusa who turned amok and shot dead by a crime analyst on Tuesday night at the Valencia apartments in Section 25, Shah Alam, had previously gone amok too, says the Sabahan's cousin who was his flat-mate.

The cousin, an odd-job worker, who preferred to be known as Jumaidy and also in his early 40s, said: "Darwis was suffering from epilepsy since his early 20s back in Sabah. Five years ago, he ran amok at Padang Jawa in Shah Alam following an argument with his neighbour but police managed to calm him down." Jumaidy said Darwis, who

received medical attention, moved to Kuala Lumpur in 2001 finding work here in a factory. "But after his amok incident in 2006, his family advised him to return to their home at Kampung Merotai in Tawau. No further action was taken against Darwis after his family obtained a letter from hospital to confirm he suffered from

epilepsy," said Jumaidy. "Whenever Darwis had an epileptic fit, he would break into a rage or pass out. Last year, without first telling his family, he flew back to KL." Jumaidy said when Darwis was his normal self, he behaved accordingly. "He was hardworking, kindly and helpful to his factory colleagues," he said.

Crime analyst: I shot to save myself and others CRIME analyst Kamal Affendi Hashim (pic), who shot dead a Sabahan who went amok, said he did it in self-defence. "The amok man slashed my right knee and right hand fingers forcing me to save others and myself," Kamal, 43, told The M a l a y Mail. " Us i n g my left hand, I pulled out my pistol and fired

several times." Kamal, who is licensed to carry a German-made Heckler & Koch HK P30 pistol, said his office is quite near the Valencia apartments in Section 25, Shah Alam, where the incident took place on Tuesday night. "When I saw a chaotic situation on the second floor of the flat, I tried to help and advised residents at the scene to go back inside their apartments," he said. "Suddenly, I saw three policemen trying to restraint a fourth man who was berserk. He broke free and ran down the staircase when I was acci-

In the Tuesday incident, three policemen tried to restrain Darwis who broke free to attack and wound the crime analyst, Kamal Affendi Hashim who fired several shots, killing Darwis. Several shots richoted into a nearby apartment and grazed the right hand and right thigh of Indonesian housewife Rosita Mohamad Rafie, 24.

dentally knocked down. I lay on the floor when the parangwielding amok stood before me and he savagely attacked and injured me and that was when I had to shoot him." Kamal was then rushed to the KPJ Selangor Specialist Hospital in Section 20, Shah Alam. "I underwent two surgeries on my right knee and right hand, including attaching a piece of steel to the tendons on my hand," he said. "The doctor said it would take from two weeks to two months for my injuries to heal and I have to undergo rehabilitation treatment too."

POLICE are waiting for a forensics report from the Chemistry Department and a post-mortem report from the hospital concerning the fatal shooting of an amok Sabahan. Shah Alam district police chief, ACP Zahedi Ayob said these reports are necessary before the investigation into the case can be concluded. The hospital pathologist said he needed to make another examination of the Sabahan's body to determine the cause of death. "Meanwhile, we have statements from all parties involved, including the crime analyst who shot the Sabahan."

Playing fields needed to raise sportsmen of calibre By HARESH DEOL haresh@mmail.com.my

SPORTS officials have condemned the lack of playing space at the temporary KL Sports School (MSSKL) sports excellence centre in Jalan Maran near Titiwangsa here. The centre, which will serve as a temporary place for KL sportsmen, lack basic facilities, including the absence of a football field. Yesterday, The Malay Mail front-paged a report on the plight of KL's future sportsmen who are used to training at the country's largest state-level training facility at its former site at Jalan Cochrane here which, however, has to make

way for redevelopment. The city athletes will be based at the Jalan Maran centre for the next two years or until the new facility, also at Jalan Cochrane, dubbed "Plot C", is completed. "I have been keeping tabs on this since The Malay Mail wrote about this a few months ago. Since state players train at the Education Ministry turf and the KL Hockey Stadium at Jalan Pantai, it will not have much of an impact," said Malaysian Hockey Federation (MHF) general manager Maninderjit Singh. "But a field is important for a healthy body and mind. Kids

need space to run around... something we had when we were young." Maninderjit, a former hockey international, said facilities in schools need to complement the Youth and Sports Ministry's 1Student 1Sport campaign. KL football coach Razip Ismail said sportsmen need facilities to train daily. "If this carries on, we won't be going anywhere. We need to train everyday, so there should be a proper replacement of a place for children to train," said Razip, who played for the national team in the 1980s. Federal Territory Amateur

Athletic Association (FTAAA) secretary S. Vegiyathuman said he was under the impression that tracks will be provided for training. "We work closely with MSSKL. We were told athletes will get the running tracks. The current place at Jalan Cochrane is not conducive." The Malay Mail first reported on plans to redevelop the excellence centre at Jalan Cochrane in March. centre at Jalan Maran, depriving the city athletes for the next couple of years. The centre at Jalan Cochrane boasts two football fields and an array of other sporting facilities. The temporary centre in Jalan Maran has one sepak takraw court, one basketball court, one multi-purpose outdoor court and one indoor badminton court. MSSKL were promised a "better centre equipped with running tracks" at the new centre in Jalan Cochrane. Work at the new centre will take between 18 to 24 months to complete.

I received a text message saying my SIM card had won a 'lucky draw'. When I contacted the listed mobile number, a man answered and asked for the code number given in the SMS. Within seconds, the man congratulated me and told me I'm the contest's "11th winner". "You are very lucky, Miss, to be the 11th winner. The cash will be transferred to your bank account within two hours." The 'trick' came when he asked for the bank's ATM card number instead of an account number. I did not have an account with the particular bank, but I played along. When I asked him why the need for the ATM card number, he said he needed it to check with Bank Negara if it was genuine. At the start of the conversation, the man maintained no payment was needed to retrieve the prize money, but as the conversation developed, he said payment was needed for "Bank Negara taxes and administration fees". He did not reveal more, as he insisted I called him back with the said bank's ATM card number if I wanted my prize. He tried to convince me by saying once the card number was given and fees paid, the cash prize would be in my account in "less than an hour". During the conversation, I overheard noise from children in the background, as if the man was at home.

AS the city braces for the Bersih 2.0 rally tomorrow, taxi operators say they intend to operate as usual, despite the road closures and roadblocks. However, they will make a final assessment of the situation before starting their trips. Malaysian As s o c i at i o n o f L i mous i ne and Hired Car Drives a n d O p e r at o r s (Petekma) vicepresident Mohd S h a h r i l Ab d u l Aziz (pic) told The Malay Mail: "Our members have decided to operate and will not be choosy about their intended destinations. "However, we will reassess the situation tomorrow to see how serious the situation is. If there is a rally and it gets out of hand, we will radio our mem-

bers to avoid the city centre." Koperasi Pengangkutan Putrajaya dan Cyberjaya Berhad secretary Mohd Salleh Mat Zain said their members would carry on as usual if everything was under control. "However, if there are massive traffic jams, our members will advise the public to take other public transport such as the LRT," he said. KLCC taxi stand concessionaire Awana Sutera Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Sham Ismail Tom said cabbies plying KLCC and nearby Mandarin Oriental Hotel KL would continue to operate. "But if there's chaos in the area, we will only resume operations after everything has settled down."

Different kind of Friday night for outlets ENTERTAINMENT outlets and night spot operators in the city's Golden Triangle are worried about poor business if patrons don't turn up tonight. A spokesman for an entertainment outlet in Jalan Sultan Ismail said the outlet could stand to lose a lot of money as Friday nights are peak profitmaking times. "Our club makes money on Fridays and we can touch tens of thousands of ringgit in profit on a good night. We are worried foreigners and tourists will not turn up. Not only are we going to lose money, they may not come back to our country again because of such rallies." The spokesman said because the outlet opened after 5pm, he

"I am afraid certain people will take advantage of the tense situation and cause problems at the outlet." A spokesman for Yassen Nasi Kandar restaurant in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman said the 24-hour restaurant would close at 6am tomorrow. "We will have to close our shop. We don't want to take any chance. Even before the previous 'Reformasi' gathering, we closed our outlets."

POLICE have obtained a restriction order preventing 91 individuals from three main groups — The Coalition for Free and Fair Elections (Bersih), Malay rights group Perkasa and Himpunan Patriot formed by Umno Youth and the Putra 1Malaysia Club — from entering the city centre tomorrow. Those who disregard the order can be charged under Section 188 of the Penal Code with disobeying a lawful order of the court which carries a maximum six months imprisonment or a fine or both upon conviction. Among prominent figures who are barred from entering the city include Bersih chief Datuk S. Ambiga, Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin and Perkasa president Datuk Ibrahim Ali. The order was obtained by the police under Section 98 of the CPC. SECTION 98 of the Criminals Procedure Code (CPC) states that in cases where in the opinion of a Magistrate, immediate prevention or speedy remedy is desirable that Magistrate may, by a written order stating the material facts of the case and served in the manner provided in Section 90, direct any person to abstain from a certain act or to take certain order with certain property in his possession or under his management if the Magistrate considers the direction is likely to prevent or tends to prevent obstruction, annoyance or injury to any persons lawfully employed, or danger to human life, health or safety, or a riot or any affray.

Deepika only choice for 'Rana', says director THE movie Rana doesn’t stop making news. Even as the film's mega star Rajinikanth recuperates in Singapore, reports have emerged that Sonakshi Sinha — and not Deepika Padukone — was the first choice for K.S. Ravikumar’s big-budget directorial venture, the Hindustan Times reports. Ravikumar is not amused with such talk. “Where do they come from? We didn’t even think of Sonakshi or chat with her about Rana,” he said. Sources close to Deepika too are surprised with the emergence of such reports. Ravikumar adds that Rajinikanth was keen on Deepika joining him in the film.

KUALA LUMPUR: 22-HOUR LOCKDOWN

Midnight start

EWE: May not go to work

Major security operations to run till 10pm

WHEN the clock strikes midnight tonight, the city centre will be transformed into a "fortress" to steel itself against the expected onslaught of the public rally by Bersih 2.0. From midnight to 10pm tomorrow, the public may have to think twice about entering the city. Although the decision on whether the rally will be held at the Malawati stadium in Shah Alam or Merdeka Stadium has yet to be made, police are taking no chances and are beefing up security measures. Express b u s e s headed for the city will be diverted to terminals outside the city,

while bus routes have been limited towards the city limits. Yesterday, police announced it had obtained a court order to prevent 91 individuals related to the three rallies from entering the city. The 91, which included Bersih 2.0 chairperson Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan, Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin and Perkasa president Datuk Ibrahim Ali, are barred from being at several main locations in the city centre such as areas surrounding Istana Negara, the National Mosque, Dataran Merdeka, Masjid Jamek Jalan Raja Laut, and Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, or face arrest. (For full list of restricted areas, see page 4) Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Amar Singh also warned the public to stay away from the city centre “if they did not have any business to attend to”.

Three bus terminals in the city — Puduraya, Putra and Pekeliling — will be closed from midnight to 10pm. Buses headed to Hentian Putra will be diverted to the Integrated Transport Terminal-Bandar Tasik Selatan (ITT-BTS), while those headed to Puduraya (except for the KL-Seremban route) and Pekeliling terminal will be diverted to Hentian Duta — the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) announced yesterday. LRT services into the city will operate as usual. However, a Prasarana spokesman cautioned operations will also depend on instructions from the authorities. Skybus, a shuttle bus service from Low-Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) to KL Sentral and vice versa, will operate normally tomorrow. “The same goes with the One Utama-LCCT route,” said Skybus chief executive officer Chris Thiagarajah.

FINAL BUS STOPS FOR stage buses headed into the city, the final stops for the bus routes are as follows: • Titiwangsa LRT and KL Monorail station – for buses coming from Jalan Semarak, Jalan Setapak/ Genting Klang, Jalan Ipoh, Jalan Kuching and Jalan Duta • Datuk Keramat LRT station – for buses coming from Jalan Ampang • Maluri LRT – for buses coming from Jalan Kg Pandan and Jalan Cheras • KL Sentral Monorail station – for buses coming from Federal Highway via Jalan BangsarJalan Travers-Jalan Tun Sambanthan and Jalan Damansara

INCONVENIENT: Many may still be unaware of the changes

Shock over bus terminal closure PUTRA and Puduraya bus terminal operators are howling in protest over the inconvenience they will face tomorrow. Due to the terminals' closure, buses heading to Puduraya and Putra stations will be diverted to Hentian Duta Bus Terminal in Jalan Duta. At Puduraya, operators say they were only informed of the terminal's closure yesterday afternoon.

A Transnasional bus driver, who only wished to be identified as Johari, told The Malay Mail the management alerted them about 2.30pm. "I understand this is a safety measure. If Puduraya were to operate as usual, bad things could happen." Plusliner ticketing officer Mohd Halim Hassan, 17, said the shift would cause them to lose a lot of business.

"Revenue is one thing but I'm also concerned for my customers as many are still unaware of the shift." However, Konsortium Bus Express Semenanjung ticketing officer Rafee Rahman, 49, remained optimistic. "With the rally mess going on, diverting traffic to Hentian Duta is good. We may not make as much money there but there is still profit to be made."

NURZURA: Will have to skip class

Public wary of movement tomorrow THE public are still unsure of how to go about their business in the city tomorrow. Housewife S. Devi, 50, said she would not be leaving her house in Klang. "I'm not worried for myself but for the safety of others. My children still need to go to work. My son takes the LRT and I fear for him," she told The Malay Mail when met at Klang Bus Stand yesterday. "If the rally happens, it is going to trouble a lot of people." Restaurant waiter Ewe Cheong Fook, 44, said he may not go to work. "I don't want to skip work but I don't want to be involved or risk my life. I usually drive but seeing that I can't do that on Saturday, I may need to take public transport." Student Nurzura Sakinah, 20, said she may have to skip classes as her college is near Petaling Street. "I usually take the bus to college but that will be a problem if there's going to be roadblocks everywhere. I believe taking the LRT won't be much better either, seeing as so many people are going to be in the city."

BUS FACTS THERE are three express route services, 15 city shuttle services, 19 trunk route services and 140 local shuttle routes in total. As of September 2006, 849 buses operate on these routes. In 2008, 650 buses operated along 167 routes covering 980 residential areas, with a ridership of about 400,000 per day.

Police offer Stadium Malawati but Bersih prefers Stadium Merdeka By ANDREW SAGAYAM andrew@mmail.com.my

THE police have offered the Coalition for Free and Fair Elections to hold their Bersih 2.0 rally this Saturday at Stadium Malawati in Shah Alam instead of Stadium Merdeka in KL to ensure a peaceful gathering. Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar (pic), who had an impromptu Press conference at Bukit Aman yesterday afternoon, told the media police had met with the Bersih 2.0 steering committee earlier yesterday. "In view of public order and security, we made the proposal to use Stadium Malawati in Shah Alam. The group will still have to apply for a permit through the Shah Alam police chief ACP Zahedi Ayob. As the OCPD, Zahedi will make a

decision on whether the group would be issued a permit or not." However, he said the Bersih 2.0 committee, led by Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan, preferred holding the rally in Stadium Merdeka. Ismail said police were against the rally being held in Stadium Merdeka as it would cause traffic congestion. The stadium is also undergoing renovations. When asked if roadblocks and police checks throughout Klang Valley would inconvenienced the public, Ismail said police were not going to restrict movement but regulate it. "We will guide motorists in and out of the city. We will be monitoring the roads and

places of interest on that day. Our job is to maintain peace and order and we will do whatever necessary to make sure of that." Bersih 2.0 committee member Wong Chin Huat, a political scientist, told The Malay Mail there was no reason why the rally could not be held in Stadium Merdeka as Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had allowed them to have the rally in a stadium. "We are doing exactly what the Prime Minister has told us to do and we chose Stadium Merdeka as it is the most convenient and everyone knows its location. Also, there is enough public transport to ferry Bersih supporters without them having to use their vehicles and causing more traffic jams."

Cops check if rifles have Bersih links By AIZAT SHARIF aizat@mmail.com.my

A LARGE yellow plastic bag at the staircase of a threestorey shoplot at Jalan PJS 3/36, Taman Sri Manja, Jalan Klang Lama, caught the eyes of a gymnasium owner at the same building. When he opened it, he saw four homemade weapons resembling hunting rifles. He lodged a police report. Petaling Jaya distric t police chief ACP Arjunaidi Mohamad said the guns were found at 4.30pm yesterday when the gymnasium owner went to his premises on the third floor of the building. “He first spotted the yellow plastic bag at the staircase as he was going up but only became suspicious when the same plastic bag was still at the staircase as he came down later.” A team from the police's

Forensic Department found the four weapons were modified rifles. "The weapons are malfuctioned and cannot be u s e d any m ore, " s ai d Arjunaidi. “We did not find bullets or notes but we are still investigating if the weapons are linked to the upcoming illegal Bersih rally on Saturday." Two factors causing bottleneck below LRT station

BANGSAR LRT FACTS • OPENED on Sept 1, 1998, Bangsar LRT station is the Kelana Jaya line stop for Bangsar. The station is the RapidKL bus hub for local shuttle bus route number T634 which serves the Bangsar Park and Pusat Bandar Damansara areas. It is also accessible via other RapidKL buses.

congested: Slow-moving traffic under the Bangsar LRT station a daily occurrence

AFTER observing the constant traffic jam below the Bangsar LRT station heading towards the New Pantai Expressway, IZRAN KASSIM attributes the bottleneck to two factors: First, the pedestrian crossing near the Shell station, which interrupts traffic flow when the traffic light is red, and Second, the haphazard pick-up of passengers by private cars and taxis at the

bus stop. IZRAN feels Kuala Lumpur City Hall should segregate the lanes for stopand-go traffic for the bus stop and maintain smooth flowing traffic on Jalan Bangsar. The road is wide enough to accommodate five lanes, which could easily be divided into two lanes for stop-and-go traffic, and three lanes for smooth flowing traffic, he says.

"Perhaps construction of lane dividers will ensure buses do not stop in the middle of the road for pick-ups, which slows down traffic coming from the newly-constructed flyover," says IZRAN. "The divider should be shoulder-high and long enough to discourage pedestrians crossing over them, thus discouraging buses that stop on the fastmoving lanes for pick-ups.

Tough time for loyal customer

DESPITE being a customer for the last five years, PHILIP KOH is upset DiGi is still giving him a tough time. He says he signed up with the telecommunications company under a special promotion five years ago and renewed his contract for another three years in 2008. That year, however, he had a dispute with DiGi after the company claimed he did not settle his bill for a different mobile number. "I thought the bill had been settled as I didn't receive any further notice or bills all this while," says PHILIP.

When he applied to change to another service provider, he was informed by that company he had been blacklisted by DiGi and needed to get a release letter from them first. He then went to a DiGi centre to pay the outstanding amount and clear his name from the blacklist. But

Anwar says the traffic congestion below the Bangsar LRT station is not because of the road designs but the irresponsible attitude of taxi drivers and private car owners who park and wait for pas-

sengers in the bus lane. To address this, enforcement will be increased. He also says IZRAN's suggestion for a road divider will be seriously considered. When contacted, IZRAN says the only way City Hall can increase enforcement in the area is to place an officer there at all times. He is happy City Hall is taking his complaint seriously.

NIDHISH says after scoring 10 A1s and an A2 in her Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia in 2007, she applied for a PSD scholarship to study medicine but failed to secure it. However, the department has advised her that if she gets a place in a premier university overseas, she will be awarded a scholarship under the Ivy League and Equivalent Universities Programme. Upon completing her National Service training, the Batu Caves resident enrolled in a private col-

lege in July 2008 to do her A-Levels and scored well in her exams. In March 2010, NIDHISH managed to secure a conditional offer to study medicine at University College London (UCL). But PSD said since it was only a conditional offer and that it is only for 2011, they can't review my application and can only do so this year. Although my offer was for 2011, I still had to provide financial guarantee to UCL by Aug 1, 2010," she says.

She says after PSD informed her of the 2011 review, she appealed to UCL for a deadline extension and got a new date — May 31, 2011. She says scoring straight As for her A-Levels has made the UCL offer "unconditional". "All I need now is the financial backing — the scholarship," says NIDHISH. NIDHISH inquired the status again in May but was informed the programme is still being reviewed. Worried because of the deadline, she appealed to UCL again and was granted an extension till Aug 1. "I really hope PSD can give me a reply soon, before it's too late." Equivalent Universities Programme will be published on the PSD website at www.jpa.gov. my in the first week of July.

Online Hotline comments www.mmail.com.my Still waiting for concert refund (July 7) BE more careful next time and act immediately! RM600 is not an amount to be scoffed at. Whatever busy schedule you may have, it is still worth adjusting to get that hardearned money back. Nobody can stop you from doing that. — Anonymous Should I surrender MyKad? (July 7) WE have been reminded again and again not to surrender our Identity cards to security guards or others who are not authorised. Never, I repeat, never ever surrender your documents. They must have other ways to control and monitor visitors. They have CCTV, mobile guards, record books, registers, patrol teams, motion scanners and all sorts of systems and it is not our problem should none of those work. So leave the car in front of the guard house. — Nawawi TO anyone reading this article, please forward or post it to your respective residents associations and joint management boards. Many of them seem to be unaware of this law. — Anonymous WHO should be responsible for educating the 'house rules' people pertaining to this Act? It is rather obvious that a vast majority of people are unaware of this Act. Even my building manager is still adamant that the guards should at least hold a visitor's driving licence while, at the same time, acknowledging that only MyKad and passports should not be surrendered. — Anonymous Parking nightmare (July 7) THE YMCA car park used to be open to the public but recently, they decided to close it and open it only for members. This has significantly added to the parking woes at Brickfields. City Hall should talk to the management of YMCA to urge them to re-open the car park to the public until the multi-storey car park is opened. — Anonymous SO we just have to be patient, suffer getting summonses day in and day out as a result of the lack of public transport and parking woes while City Hall laughs all the way to the bank. — Anonymous It’s not a car-stop (July 7) AS LONG as the government refuses to designate the city zone as a restricted zone, like what's done in Singapore, which requires payment upon entry into the city, there will always be traffic congestion. MOTORISTS along Changkat Raja Chulan in the city centre may have been too busy keeping their eyes on the road but a concerned reader spotted a Tenaga Nasional Berhad electric pole on the verge of collapsing. S.A. FERNANDEZ immediately alerted Hotline

on the leaning electric pole located opposite Menara Aik Hua and MCB Plaza. "The tilting pole looks like it may fall anytime. It's surprising that nobody noticed it, it's on a busy road," says FERNANDEZ, who had stopped there on July 4 to drop off a friend. "The pole is dangerous and should be fixed immediately." FERNANDEZ also says part of the pole is hidden by creepers.

Now, it is back to its normal position

A sticky situation (July 5) THE menace of stickers advertising Ah Longs, satellite dish contractors, lorry rentals, male enhancement product sellers, gas delivery services, massage service, work from home scams and some other illegal businesses, being stuck everywhere must be stopped. They have vandalised our lifts, doors, walls, trees, signages and bus stops long enough. Stopping these means stopping rogues, gangsters and conmen from conducting business in our neighbourhood. Once in a while I remove these illegal ads myself. But I fear for my safety while cleaning up their mess. The local council and MCMC should create a portal or MMS facility that allows us to take pictures of the illegal ads and report the vandalism. MCMC could then immediately take these numbers offline. I think we shouldn't just ignore the ads. We should ignore the content of the ads but take action to preserve the cleanliness of our country and keep our neighbourhoods safe. RakanCop, Rela, Rukun Tetangga could all join forces to curb this menace. — Rafiq

Governed by greed

ALBERT EINSTEIN was right when he said three great forces rule the world: stupidity, fear and greed. It is really baffling that despite so many warnings issued by the police, banks and the government, there are still people gullible enough to fall for tricks like these telephony and SMS competition scams. What actually was running through the minds of these 'victims' when they answered that call, or SMS, from an unknown source? I guess when it comes to money, logic does not exist anymore and is taken over by these three great forces. Many of us may still

Unfortunately, we cannot share his enthusiasm. The fundamental problems of the public transport industry relate back to policy and there has been no clear direction from SPAD about changing and improving our public transport policy. SPAD has yet to figure out a vision for public transport that includes MRT, LRT and buses. What is worse is they have not asked for feedback from public transport users on this either. There is a lot of room for improvement in the public transport industry that would be found through better policy, clearer regulations and stricter enforcement.

New BMW limited By SHAMSUL YUNOS lifestyle@mmail.com.my

ON Monday, BMW Group Malaysia introduced the New BMW 1 Series Coupe and 1 Series Convertible on the heels of the launch of the Audi A1. Like the A1, the 1-series will compete in the premium compact car segment. Geoffrey Briscoe, Managing Director of BMW Group Malaysia, because premium compact cars have a niche following in Malaysia, BMW Group Malaysia has only brought

All Proton cars to include CVT CONTINUOUSLY Variable Transmission or CVT is a great way to improve a car’s fuel economy and soon Proton will introduce this type of transmission on their cars. CVT transmissions allow the engine to remain at the optimum operating speed while the gearing is constantly adjusted to suit speed and driving conditions. “We have been conducting comprehensive development and integration tests of the CVT with our CamPro engines and we are happy to be able to provide this option to future buyers soon,” said Datuk Seri Syed Zainal Abidin Mohamed Tahir, Group Managing Director of Proton Holdings Berhad. “In the near future, CVT

will be mated to our CamPro engines as an option to our range of cars along with the conventional four-speed automatic gear transmission that is currently being used,” Syed Zainal said. “This feature will not only provide more than just a smoother drive but it will also contribute towards fuel efficiency and sav-

ings to the user,” he added. Tests conducted by Proton showed that the CVT transmission can reduce fuel consumption by up to 4 per cent in urban driving and almost up to 10 per cent for highway driving. Due to their simpler nature, CVT transmission can be 20 per cent lighter than conventional gearboxes and newer designs have eliminated most of the load limitations faced by early models. “In view of fuel price pressure on consumers, we know that the introduction of CVT will contribute significantly to im-

Japan gets sleeker-looking Demio THE Mazda 2, which is also known as the Demio in Japan, was given a facelift and went on sale earlier this week with a sales target of 6,000 units per month. Fitted with the new 1.3-litre Skyactiv engine, the fresh Demio can now travel up to 30km on a single litre of fuel, making it one of the class leaders. Mazda also increased body rigidity by using localised reinforcements and retuned the suspension to give it better handling, improved high-speed stability and heighten ride comfort. The Demio also enjoys lower wind noise thanks to soundinsulating glass, and more controlled airflow across the top and bottom surfaces of the body. Externally, the car gets the revised Mazda family face while inside the cabin gets new seat materials chosen to improve

quality perception. Mazda says the Skyactiv engine also helps to reduce noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) levels. The new drivetrain comes with a new technology called intelligent-Drive Master (i-DM) that supports economic and enjoyable driving. Its extensive list of standard features also include i-stop, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Traction Control System (TCS) and exclusive 14-inch alloy wheels. The impressive fuel economy of the Skyactiv engine family relies on the very high compression ratio of 14:1 and the use of recirculated exhaust gas to suppress knocking. The new Demio also comes with enhanced safety equip-

ment which include passive safety features such as Mazda’s Advanced Impact-energy Distribution and Absorption System, that provides high-level protection in the event of a collision. The centre rear seat now gets three-point seatbelt and head rest.

proving their lives as it not only provides them with a smoother drive but also helps reduce fuel consumption. “Lower fuel consumption also impacts the environment significantly by reducing CO2 emissions,” he said, adding that the efficiency of the CVT technology integrated into Proton engines has resulted in a 5 per cent emissions improvement.

in the cars in limited numbers to ensure its exclusivity. “We only delivered over 30 units of the previous edition of the BMW 135i Coupe and BMW 120i Convertible here in Malaysia and our strategy for these cars would remain the same to ensure its distinctiveness in the premium segment,” said Briscoe. At a glance, the new BMW 135i Coupe and BMW 120i Convertible sport strong defining lines with larger air inlets, muscular definition, new headlights and taillights as well as the

aerodynamic innovation at the redesigned air dam. Additionally, two new exterior colours of Vermilion Red and Marrakesh Brown are also added to the colour range of the new compact BMW cars. The new BMW 1 Series Coupé is without peer in the premium compact segment with its unique, powerful design that radiates sporting ability.

Tan Chong to assemble Subaru compact SUV KUDOS to Edaran Tan Chong for getting a major brand to make Malaysia one of their production centres, with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI), the parent company of Subaru. There is no word which model they mean exactly, so we are hazarding a guess that it would be the Impreza XV or the Forester. Our money is on the XV as the Forester moved out of the compact category with the current model. It's a relatively small number — 5,000 units a year — but the good thing is that the majority will likely be exported as Subaru sales in Malaysia is a fraction of that and most of them are of the Impreza. It's a small step forward against our regional competitors like Thailand and Indonesia, but still a nice move. According to a Subaru Press release, production will begin in October 2012 at Tan Chong’s assembly facility in Serendah, near Rawang.

The compact SUVs will be locally-produced and marketed in Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia through the Subaru sales and distribution network of Tan Chong Group. FHI has established a strong partnership with Edaran Tan Chong since 1987, when it was appointed the Subaru distributor in Singapore. The Tan Chong Group has been expanding the sales and distribution network of Subaru vehicles across ASEAN countries that now include Cambodia, Southern China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. Since its foundation in 1974, Tan Chong Motor Assemblers has engaged in the local assembly of Japanese and European automobiles.

Family drivers in for a treat THE Ford S-Max is a popular compact Multi-Purpose Vehicle that has been popular in Europe and its launch has been anticipated much. Sime Darby Auto Connexion recently gave the Press an exclusive preview of the S-Max and facelifted Mondeo with the carmaker’s new 2.0-litre EcoBoost turbocharged petrol engines. In the Mondeo, the two-litre turbo engine would replace the 2.3 litre engine that was offered with the model in Malaysia. Engine and drivetrain specifications for

both models are identical with the motor cranking out 203PS at 6,000 rpm and 300Nm between 1,750 and 4,500rpm. The EcoBoost engine features high-pressure direct injection, low-inertia turbocharging and twin independent variable camshaft timing. The engine is matched with a six-speed Powershift dual-clutch transmission. Key new features include push-button ignition, Bluetooth with voice command, rear air-condition vents, auto dimming rearview mirror, and Alcantara mix/ Ebony leather interior. It

also comes with the Ford Convers+Human Machine interface, which is basically an interactive touch screen panel that allows drivers to customsie their cars and check on its health status. Safety-wise, there’s ESP, TC, ABS with EBD, EBA and hill launch assist, along with seven airbags in the inventory. For entertainment, there’s a MP3 CD player audio system with eight speakers as well as an aux port. Five colours will be available for the car, being Parkside, Ice White, Midnight Sky, Moondust Silver and Panther Black. Pricing for the Ford

Mondeo 2.0L with EcoBoost is estimated to be between RM180,000 and RM185,000 (on the road with insurance). Key feature of the S-Max is a Fold Flat Seating system that gives the vehicle the level of versatility that is expected among MPVs. With all seats used, the SMax has room for 285 cubic litres of luggage but if only five seats are in use, the load carrying capacity increases to 1,171 cubic litres. Meanwhile, the S-MAX 2.0L with EcoBoost is estimated to be between RM185,000 and RM188,000, on the road with insurance.

CONTINENTAL Sime Tyre is presenting the HSU 1 steering axle tyre specificallydesigned for city driving for heavy vehicles. With excellent handling characteristics, it makes for enhanced braking and steering safety, giving drivers peace of mind in heavy downpours and passengers a smooth ride. Driving in cities is totally different from long distance driving as vehicles constantly change speed, so direction and braking is more sudden and forceful. These conditions call for the special design of the HSU 1’s tread. This special tread pattern provides a wider margin of steering and braking safety than a regional tyre tread would. This comfortable and quiet rolling is achieved by using high tech design, coupled with special compounds. Inner city driving means a

strong emphasis on handling. Continental’s HSU 1 does this effortlessly, thanks to the tyre contour with an optimum layout, special tread composition with high tread depth and additionally reinforced sidewalls. Thanks to the wear- resistant rubber compounds in the reinforced sidewalls, the HSU 1 is also resistant to kerbing. The HSU 1 is available in size 11R22.5 and 275/70R22.5. The Continental Truck Tyres roadshow is in its final leg this weekend in Klang. For those who are interested to attend the roadshow, go to www.continentaltruck-tyres.com/my for more information.

Extra speed, less fuel

EASY ON THE GAS: If you really apply yourself and keep a light foot, the Forte will return less than 10 litres per 100km quite easily

Kia Forte 2.0 six-speed gets fuel economy boost Test Drive By SHAMSUL YUNOS lifestyle@mmail.com.my THE Kia Forte has been turning heads and emptying pockets since it was launched at the end of 2009, and now with a six-speed transmission, it has become an even stronger money magnet. The addition of the six-speed automatic transmission and paddle shifter has not only made the Forte even more attractive to keen drivers but also a more logical purchase for those looking to maximise fuel economy. With the four-

speed variant, the Forte stayed firmly in the middle of the pack with their fuel economy, returning on average between 10 and 11 litres per 100km under normal driving conditions but the new model will see your average fuel consumption easily reduced by half a litre for every 100km. If you really apply yourself and keep a light foot, the Forte will return less than 10 litres per 100km quite easily. On our weekend session, which included some heavy acceleration and keen cornering and slow cruise through the city, the Forte returned 11 litres per 100km, but when the trip computer was reset for the lightfooted driving session, it burned 9.6 litres per 100km. Apart from the sixspeed transmission, the reverse camera with display embedded into the rear-view mirror was also a much appreciated addition to the car. Other cars offer rearview cameras but they display the image in the centre console, not a natural place to look at when reversing. Most people look at the rear-view camera when going backwards so the position of the Forte’s display screen is perfect.

We continue to be impressed by the quality of materials and assembly. The Forte 2.0 six-speed is one of the few models under RM100,000 that come fitted with a traction and vehicle stability control (VSC).

When we tested the system with a 65 km/h mid corner lift-off and Scandinavian flick, the system allowed for limited rear-end slide. In fact, it felt as if the system would let you hold a controlled drift into a high-speed corner. When we turned off the VSC, it stayed off, unlike in some cars where the system can never be fully deactivated. Some drivers will like this feature while others may prefer the system to automatically kick in when the brakes start locking or the car starts to slide uncontrollably. Keen drivers will appreciate the clean and crisp handling which makes the Forte a joy to drive on twisty roads. The keen handling characteristics is a major leap forward for the Korean carmaker. Kia tuned the chassis to have a bit of understeer , which is a sensible approach for a family car that would have a wide spectrum of drivers, the majority of whom may not be sporty and keen motorists. While the steering is accurate, it could use a bit more feedback. When you push the car near the limit, the warning signs come late and this saps a bit of the driver's confidence. The Forte will continue to command strong sale figures and this will help the brand grow significantly this year. If you are in the market for a family car, this is definitely one that is worth considering since the company has made multiple pledges to improve their after-sales support.

By SHAMSUL YUNOS lifestyle@mmail.com.my THE Race of Portugal which marked the end of the first half of the 2011 WTCC season gave Chevrolet another double win, courtesy of British drivers, Alain Menu in the first race and Robert Huff in the second race. In Race 1, Alain Menu made perfect use of the pole position and pulled away to take a flagto-flag win while Yvan Muller and Rob Huff put on a show with their fight for second. Race 2 was definitely more lively, with Muller and Huff battling for victory. Contact could not be avoided when the Briton overtook the Frenchman at mid distance of the race, but the stewards saw no reason to launch any investigation on what could be seen as a normal racing incident. Menu finished sixth in the second race. “A good weekend for Chevrolet and for myself and a result that is the best reward for my crew, which did an exceptional job,” said Huff. “I enjoyed fighting with Yvan

The Picanto, which was sponsored by Naza Kia Malaysia Sdn Bhd, completed 378 laps to win the GP-4 class, which is for cars with automatic transmissions, at the endurance race. In addition to winning its class, the Picanto also made history for being part of the first Malaysian team with disabled drivers to participate in the K4GP Sepang 24Hours Endurance Race and as the first ever Korean car to enter the race. Adi Haslam said the team intends to enter the Picanto into the K4GP Malaysia 4-Hours Challenge in Sepang in December as well as two other races next year. The Picanto will compete in the GP-4 category. These races will serve as a prelude to the K4GP Sepang 24-Hours Endurance Race in 2013. He said the team is looking to field a team comprising of only disabled drivers for the K4GP Malaysia 4-Hours Challenge in December. The Picanto driven by the team, features hand-operated throttle and brakes for the drivers.

Shell Eco Marathon Asia competition is being held for the second time in Malaysia, from Wednesday to Sunday at Sepang International Circuit. Naza World-Taylor’s Eco Team is one of 121 teams from different universities taking place in this challenge which has two categories — Urban1 and Prototype. The winning vehicle is the one that achieves the farthest distance using the least amount of energy. “Our team opted to go for the prototype category as we wanted to test new design concepts,” said Wong Zhou Hong, the team’s chief designer. “We are confident that our car is going to perform well as we ensured that our computerbased design was verified using experimental techniques and tests.” Built out of mild steel and fibreglass, the solar car design was inspired by the dolphin’s shape. The car uses a rear wheel drive and steering system.

Each day, the concert held will solely benefit one of the

respective organisations. Being an invitation-only event, those interested will have to contact the relevant people depending on which show they are attending. For shows at 8.30pm on July 22 and 23 as well as the 3pm one on July 24 — call Kok Wing at 012-2139333. For the show on July 21 at 8.30pm benefiting AWAM, give Bernie a ring at 03-78774221. For the show on July 23, at 3pm benefiting the SIC–PIHD Children Learning Centre (For the Poor), call Peter at 0198554888. Last but not least, for the show on July 24 at 8.30pm benefiting Hospis Malaysia, call 03-91333936 and ask for Carol or Li Ping.

Sheen to star in new show THE 45-year-old actor (pic) — who was axed from hit show Two and a Half Men earlier this year due to his erratic behaviour and turbulent personal life — is in talks to appear in a new show based on the 2003 movie Anger Management. Producer Joe Roth wants Sheen to portray an athleteturned-counsellor — originally

played by Jack Nicholson in the movie — who enrages his patients more than calming them down and has his own problems with rage, the Hollywood Reporter states. Though the planned programme has not yet received a finance or distribution deal, the hope is for a pilot episode to be ready for autumn 2012. — Bang Showbiz

Muse want to sing in space THE Knights of Cydonia hitmakers are keen to travel on Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic commercial intergalactic flight when the scheme takes off, and would use the experience to add a new dimension to their career. Muse frontman Matt Bellamy said: “We're trying to bag a free trip on it (Virgin Galactic). I'm going to try to convince Branson to let us make a music video or record a song up there.“

Matt has previously spoken of his fascination with the moon, saying: "The crowd in Moscow were probably the most intense we've ever had. They were going mental and they bought me a big telescope. "I set it up when I got home and looked at the moon. Have you ever looked at the moon through a telescope? It's all mountains and stuff, it's unbelievable." — Bang Showbiz

However, he does not even know his best timing for the event. The 22 year-old is not to be blamed though. Despite being an internationally competed category, the 800m freestyle is frequently left out of Opens across the globe. Even the Malaysia Open a few

months back did not feature the category. In fact, the 800m freestyle is not Kevin's pet event. He usually swims in the 1500m freestyle. His timing of 15:52.84s at the Malaysia Open was split and the 800m mark time was taken. Kevin had broken the Malaysia Open meet record with that timing. Kevin missed out on the last World Championship but did represent Malaysia in

Melbourne in 2007. "I was only 18 then. The exposure I got was great. I learned a lot from just seeing how some of the world's best swim," said the Perak lad. He admitted to changing his techniques in hope he could swim faster. Kevin is excited participate at the highest stage again and said he has not felt the nerves yet. KL Ho ckey Asso ciation (KLHA) will be holding its Under-14, Under-16 and Under-18 competition for a month, starting next week. However, it is seen as a farce as only four teams will be competing. "There is nothing much we can do. We have sent a circular to schools via the ministry, inviting them to participate. But there wasn't much response," said KLHA secretary V. Rajamanickam (pic). The four participating teams are SMK Maxwell, SMK Setapak and two teams from SMK Kepong Baru, Kepong Baru Red and Kepong Baru Green. KLHA has decided to exclude the project schools in the city as they do not want to disrupt their training. They reasoned that the purpose of the league is to unearth new talent. However, one may wonder if the inclusion of such schools can only improve the competitive level of the league. "A bulk of the finest players in KL are already with the project schools and are already active in hockey on a daily basis. "This league is meant to find new talent. It's surprising that some schools, who have been active in hockey,

have declined to participate," he added. The schools Rajamanickam were referring to was Victoria Institution and St. John's Institution. He hopes they will take initiative to improve their hockey. Rajamanickam is certain their students would want to play in the tournament. "The teachers should give them the chance." Rajamanickam admitted perhaps transport was an issue for the schools. KLHA could not offer any subsidy for travelling due to limited budgets. The league is scheduled to begin on July 12 and will end on July 28 but it was learnt KLHA are considering having a second round of matches to provide more games for the players.

"IT will be an improved league next year," said KL Hockey Association (KLHA) secretary V. Rajamanickam. He insists the lack of participation this year will not deter them from organising it next year. "This is the first time we are having it after four years. We'll have to rethink many aspects for next year's league," he said. Amongst the things that KLHA will consider is the timing of the league, as well as funds and ways to attract more teams to compete. T h e l a s t t i m e K L HA organised the Under-14, Under-16 and Under-18

league, there were an average of 10-12 teams in each division. "If we have proper funding, we can give subsidies to the teams as well. We will look for donations and sponsorships next year." KLHA might also bring forward the next edition as some schools opted not to participate this year due to its timing. Some schools rather their students focus on studies this time of year. However, KLHA will also have to take into consideration the schools' meet, which is usually held from March till June.

Agassi set for Hall of Fame induction EIGHT-TIME Grand Slam singles champion Andre Agassi (pic) will be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame on Sunday. Agassi, among only seven men to achieve a career singles Grand Slam, spent 101 weeks ranked No. 1 in the world during a 20-year career that also included a 1996 Atlanta Olympic singles title. The 41-year-old American is the husband of another Hall of Famer, 2004 inductee Steffi Graf. "I'm truly honoured to be recognised alongside the greatest players of tennis," Agassi said. "Tennis has given me everything in my life. It has given me my wife. My tennis career afforded me the opportunity to make a difference in other people's lives." The induction will come in a ceremony during the semifinals of the ATP Hall of Fame Championships grasscourt event. "We are looking forward to a great weekend at the International Tennis Hall of Fame as we celebrate the induction of one of the most exciting athletes of our sport," Hall of Fame chief executive Mark Stenning said. Agassi won 60 career titles, including the 1995, 2000, 2002 and 2003 Australian Opens, the 1994 and 1999 US Opens, the 1992 Wimbledon and 1999 French Open crowns. Agassi's 1999 French Open triumph made him the first man to have won a career Grand Slam on three different surfaces — grass, clay and hardcourt. Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Don Budge, Roy Emerson, Rod Laver and Fred Perry are the other men to complete the career Grand Slam. Agassi, who played for Davis Cup-winning US teams in 1990 and 1992, turned professional at age 16 in 1986, won his first ATP crown the following year and retired in 2006 after a third-round loss at the US Open. — AFP

Drama expected as flying Vettel guns for seventh win SILVERSTONE is truly a quick circuit, with lots of long sweeping corners. Aeroefficiency is the key here and when I say efficient, I mean you need a car that generates a lot of down-force without creating too much drag. Another circuit like that is Barcelona and we all know how quick the Red Bull cars were there. What will hinder the teams will be the banning of the exhaust blown diffuser which is in place this weekend.

Pretty much all the teams use it, and not being allowed to use the exhaust gasses to make their diffuser work better, and therefore create more down-force, will hurt all the teams. Some have estimated

it to be up to 1.5 seconds a lap around a high down-force track like Silverstone. But will it change the order of the cars? I'm not so sure, even though Red Bull have said it will hurt them as they

Schumacher prays for rain

MICHAEL SCHUMACHER believes he can finish this weekend's British Grand Prix on the podium... if it rains. The 42-year-old Mercedes driver has yet to finish higher than fourth place since his return to Formula 1 and conceded that in spite of upgrades to his car, it would be very difficult to challenge rival teams in dry conditions. However, the seven-time world champion said he would relish the opportunity of competing on a wet Silverstone track and believes he could secure a top

Whereas in dry conditions, although we may have an improvement in the car, I guess a podium would be out of reach. have designed this year’s car around the exhaust blown diffuser, and they seem to have such an efficient car. What will make a difference will be the upgrades brought to the race as all of the teams will be expected to do. For some of the smaller teams like Team Lotus and Virgin, this will be the last round of updates before fully concentrating on next year's car. Fo r t h e b i g g e r t e a m s like Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren, the updates will be significant as they push on for the championship. We are now almost halfway through the season and it is really crunch time for the teams. If Red Bull continue to dominate like they did in Barcelona, then it is really all over and I don't think anyone will touch Sebastian Vettel for the championship this year. But if Ferrari or McLaren make a big enough step to overhaul Red Bull, then with 10 races left there might still be a fight for the championship. If not the drivers’ then at least the constructors championship. As for Silverstone, this year we see the pits being moved to the back part of the circuit and pretty much everyone involved has praised the new facilities. But for the drivers, once you are on the track, it is pretty much the same as last year. Look out for the Maggots-

Becketts complex, because there is no other sequence of corners like those ones. These four corners switch quickly left to right and back with up to 4.8 Gs and speeds of up to 240km/h. Historically, Silverstone has not been an easy circuit to overtake on, but with the new rules for this year, including DRS and the Pirelli tyres, it certainly should be pretty exciting to watch. And with the pressure building amongst the top teams, expect drama this weekend.

or take a break altogether, and still be leading the standings at the end of August. Formula 1's youngest ever champion is about as likely to do that as ask anyone the score, however. "To be honest, I don't really think about the gap," he said. "I don't want you to tell me now, after my answer," he added firmly. "I don't even know the gap. I think Jenson is second behind. "There is no importance leading the championship now. The most important time is

after the last race. I think we learned that last year." Vettel has won six out of eight races and finished second in the other two. Even a poor student of mathematics should not take long to figure out the tally given that he has dropped just 14 points from a maximum of 200. Last season was a different story, with four drivers taking the title battle down to the wire with Vettel leading the standings for the first time only after the finale in Abu Dhabi. — Reuters

Messi Argentina Illustrious 'Albiceleste' must stop torturing fans and start performing

HOLA! What's wrong with Argentina? They have been a real pain to watch so far in the Copa America, which they are hosting. Argentina produced another mediocre performance in the 0-0 draw against Colombia at Brigadier Gral Estanislao Lopez in Santa Fe yesterday. The Argentines were held to a 1-1 draw by Bolivia in their opening match after a drab show as well last weekend. The determined Colombians were performing much, much better and could have easily won if not for them missing two golden opportunities. Argentina must also thank goalkeeper Sergio Romero, who made a couple of crucial saves which saw him named Man-of-the-Match. The L ionel Messi-le d Argentina were booed by their disappointed, disgusted and angry fans off the pitch after the match. These fans, already freezing because of the cold weather, were fed up as a much better performance was expected after the Bolivia misery. Argentina fans all over the globe must be cursing as well, including in Malaysia, where an upset fan broke a cup while watching the match-cumbreakfast at a mamak. Coach Sergio Batista understood the fans' action. Again, what else could he say? It was not the Argentina we used to know, really. Instead, it was a team lacking in cohesion and ideas on how to get the better of the Colombians. The Albiceleste must now

win over minnows Costa Rica in their final match to avoid an unthinkable elimination from the group stages. Can't imagine how the fans will react if Argentina fail to make the last eight. It would be a massive humiliation. And what will legend and former coach Diego Maradona say? "The fans come to watch us win. We don't like that sort of thing (the boos and abuses) but it is understandable," said Batista, who insisted on starting with Messi, Carlos Tevez and Ezequiel Lavezzi again upfront. This combination fell flat against Bolivia, remember? For the second game in a row, Messi failed to inspire his side, showing only glimpses of his true form as he was marshalled by Carlos Sanchez in midfield. The Barca superstar only managed to create one great chance but Lavezzi squandered it. Batista chose to praise the Colombian defence for making life difficult for Messi. "They closed down Leo very well. Things did not go his way today, but that is a compliment to our opposition," he said. Agreed, the Colombians were compact defensively. But Argentina are not all about Messi. There are others who must play their roles well

to get the team moving in their bid for results. And yes... Tevez was disappointed his team could not break down an excellent Colombia but affirmed Argentina still have time to turn around a disappointing tournament. "They didn't let us play, and they knew exactly how to stop us," he said. But Tevez and company must be more creative to split open a solid defence — especially with t he k i nd of quality players they have. They need to think deeper as not to be so predictable. There must be that element of surprise to catch the opponents. Enough of whether the fans are going to cry or not for Argentina. But still deep down, they must be wishing the team will bounce back strongly, begin-

Sanchez will be deadlier, says Isla

VERSATILE Chile star Mauricio Isla (pic) praised Udinese and international teammate Alexis Sanchez, saying the interest from Barcelona has only made the 22-year-old attacker a better player. Both players started in Chile's 2-1 win over Mexico last Monday evening, a result

which put them at the top of Group C. Sanchez could not find the score sheet, but impressed in San Juan and demonstrated flashes of the ability which have led to strong interest from Barca to secure his signature. Most recent reports suggest the Catalans are on the verge

of sealing a €40m (RM173m) deal for the Tocopilla native, although Udinese still appear reluctant to release their most precious gem. Isla is delighted with how Alexis is dealing with the pressure of being linked with the European champions. "Sanchez is relaxed and

out the 90 minutes in this scoreless thriller. "Organisation is vital for us when we play, we have experience despite the fact that we are young. We demonstrated great organisation and were able to get the result," he said. Coach Hernan Gomez also praised his men. "It was a very tight game, dynamic and exciting. Colombia kept their order well and from there, always tried to attack on the break," he said, before singling out Carlos Sanchez, entrusted to mark Lionel Messi, for special attention. "Sanchez did a fine job, he was loyal. Messi couldn't complain or protest. Sanchez was a star." Colombia stay on top of the group with four points, and will confirm their passage into the quarterfinals as leaders if they beat Bolivia in their final group game.

Inter offer United Sneijder

MANCHESTER UNITED were last night given the green light to make a £35m (RM168.2m) bid for Wesley Sneijder, after Inter Milan admitted they are considering selling the Dutch midfielder. Sir Alex Ferguson's quest for Sneijder appeared to have gone cold when the former Real Madrid schemer suggested he planned to stay at the San Siro. But new Inter coach Gian Piero Gasperini is now ready to sell the 27-year-old after completing the £10.8m capture of Arsenal target Ricky Alvarez from Argentine champions Velez Sarsfield. That opens the door for Fergie to make his move and land Sneijder as the final piece of his summer transfer jigsaw.

Meanwhile, French international striker Djibril Cisse is poised to join Lazio from Greek giants Panathinaikos, the Roman club's coach Edy Reja said. "(Cisse) has always been our top target, but first we need one of our strikers to find another team," said Reja. "Usually I only talk about players who have officially been transferred, but if he does come, we'll have a player capable of making a difference." Lazio are reportedly looking to sell their Argentine forward Mauro Zarate.

According to the Italian news agency Ansa, 29-year-old Cisse will arrive for a fee of €6 million and will signing a four-year contract worth €2.1 million per season. The 31-year-old rejected the initial terms for a move to Anfield but appears to have accepted an improved offer. "We should close the deal by the end of the day," his agent Ovidio Colucci said. "Of course anything could happen before the signatures are added to the contracts but I can confirm that there is only Liverpool for Doni. "The only concrete offer has come from Liverpool and we hope to wrap everything up by this evening."

Wenger's double swoop

ARSENAL are hoping to pull off an audacious double swoop this week for Gervinho and Ezequiel Lavezzi. Ivory Coast striker Gervinho is already in London for a medical as he wraps up an £11m (RM52.8m) move from Lille. And boss Arsene Wenger is also chasing £25m-rated Napoli striker Lavezzi, who has been on Manchester City’s radar for months. Arsenal are now favourites to land him because while City have been tracking him for months, they feel he is overpriced. Lavezzi is playing at the Copa America but sources in Italy claim his future could be decided within 24 hours.

RETURNING for pre-season training, John Terry has spoken once more of his excitement at Chelsea's pre-season tour of Asia, which begins in under two weeks. The team fly to Malaysia on July 17, and Terry is already looking forward to seeing some new faces, both in the camp and out. "They're always great trips," he said, when asked about life on tour. "There are often new signings who come on board and they're great for those guys. We are away for two weeks and from a football perspective it's a great chance for everyone to get to know each other. "Then on a different level we go to a lot of events, and you get to meet some great people who are sometimes in a similar environment, but in different professions. It's great to talk to people like that, and they are always really down to earth and like to show their support for the football club. "We've met some great people over the years, Will Ferrell, Tony Blair, Snoop Dogg, the Williams tennis sisters. "We talk about nice places to go to eat or something like that, you make general chit-

chat, and sometimes it's just nice to talk about something other than football!" But then, of course, it is the football that is the main reason for the trip, to promote the club to the hundreds of thousands of fans that turn out to see the team in action, and with four games to come inside a 10-day period, Terry is well aware of the levels of support that await. "It always surprises me with the fans, I've seen myself how much bigger the club have got commercially. It's nice to see us grow and the players know how important these tours are and embrace it as much as possible," he said. "Fans in Asia show a real passion and I know they have to sit up at three or four in the morning to watch games in England, and I just love that commitment so it will be great to get out there and reward them for that." Surprise factor

Qatar denies split games

ONG KIM SWEE reckons Malaysia could be the surprise package of Group C in Round 3 of the Olympic qualifying tournament

ORGANISERS of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar have denied any discussions on splitting games into three 30-minute periods if temperatures in the stadiums become dangerously high for the players. “Splitting the games held during the Fifa World Cup 2022 in Qatar has not been discussed at any time,” the organising committee said in a statement this morning. “All 64 games in 2022 will be played in carbon neutral cooled stadiums in two halves of forty-five minutes as per regulations.” Qatar says all matches will be played in air-conditioned stadiums in which the temperature will be maintained at around 24° degrees Celsius. Michael Beavon, a director of Arup Associates who helped to develop the zerocarbon solar technology that will cool the 12 stadiums, said in London yesterday that matches could be split into three periods if, for some reason, the temperature reached 32 Celsius. Fifa denied yesterday the possibility had been discussed and Qatar said the comments were “without any foundation.” Qatar was controversially awarded the finals last December, beating off bids from Australia, Japan, South Korea and the United States. The decision came despite Fifa’s own technical report saying that summer heat in the country could be a potential health risk for officials, players and spectators and required special precautions to be taken. Devils see Light LIVERPOOL: FOOTBALL/ PREMIER LEAGUE

Brown, O’Shea leave Manchester United for Sunderland

SUNDERLAND this morning completed a double swoop of Manchester United defenders, bringing Wes Brown and John O’Shea to the Stadium of Light on four-year contracts. Brown, 31, and 30year-old O’Shea joined for undisclosed fees, after United last month accepted an offer of around £12 million (RM57.7m) for the pair and midfielder Darron Gibson, O’Shea’s Ireland international teammate. Brown, who can play at centreback or rightback, made his United debut in the club’s 1998-99 treble-winning season and went on to make 361 appearances. “We are delighted to welcome a player of Wes’ ability, experience and character to the club,” said Sunderland coach Steve Bruce, himself a former United centreback. “He has been a fantastic professional for Manchester United through the years and not only will he strengthen our defensive options, he will also bring with him a winning mentality and level of maturity which can only be positive for the players around him.” Brown won two Champions League titles, five

Premier League winners’ medals, two FA Cups and two League Cups with United and has been capped 23 times by England. “Last season, I was fine, I just didn’t get into the team, so it was a little bit frustrating. But that’s football and you move on,” said Brown, who has endured an injury-riddled career. “I am just delighted to be here now to help Sunderland push forward. “Personally, it would be good to be playing every week, trying to help the team win and playing well.” O’Shea accumulated one Champions League title, five league successes, one FA Cup winners’ medal and three League Cups during a 12-year Old Trafford tenure that saw him make almost 400 appearances. “Once I’d heard reports about the club and the people here, the ambitions and what the manager was all about, it was the only place I was going to come to,” said O’Shea, who can also play as a holding midfielder. Bruce said: “John has been a solid, consistent part of Manchester United’s squad for well over a decade, which goes to

show the fantastic pedigree of player we have signed. “He is a wonderful professional both on and off the field and his wealth of experience and versatility will be great attributes for us. “I’m delighted with the players we have been able to secure ahead of the new s e a son.” The pair follow in the footsteps of Connor Wickham, Craig Gardner, Ji Dongwon and free signings Keiren Westwood and Sebastian Larsson, who have all signed for Sunderland since the end of last season. — AFP
