Guard shot dead PETALING JAYA
Robbers ambush SUV transporting cash at traffic lights junction HIS dream was to be a policeman or a soldier, so he could protect the peace. Mohd Burhanuddin Jamaluddin even went to the extent of signing up for the police force but failed his physical examination as he was pigeon-chested. His next best bet, he figured, was to be a security guard. However, that job cost the 23-yearold his life when he was gunned down by a robber outside University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) yesterday. It was only Mohd Burhanuddin’s third day on the job. At about 10.30am, three men on two motorcycles ambushed three security guards in a Toyota Hilux that was leaving the hospital but had stopped at a traffic lights junction to enter Jalan Universiti. The motorcycles pulled up on both sides of the sports utility vehicle (SUV) that was transporting cash and ordered

A moment later, the pillion rider on the motorcycle on the passenger side of the SUV opened fire through the window, hitting Mohd Burhanuddin, the front passenger, twice in his ribs. The other two guards were not injured. The robbers then grabbed a sack containing about RM170,000 and rode off, turning left at the traffic lights towards Jalan Gasing. His body was taken to Kuala Lumpur Hospital (KLH) about 4pm, where a sombre crowd of friends and neighbours had gathered to accompany his brothers and father to identify the body. Most, including the family, had rushed from Pahang. They said Mohd Burhanuddin came to the city three years ago from Felda
Purun in Triang, Pahang, and was staying in Gombak with some housemates. Over the years, he had worked various jobs, among them manning a RapidKL counter and as a security guard in Danau Kota, Setapak. A childhood soldier friend said Mohd Burhanuddin had always been interested in the army and police force. “When I visited him in Gombak, he would try my uniform on for size and take pictures to see how he looked,” said the friend, who only gave his name as Aziz. “But he could not pass the physical as he was pigeon-chested. “I even told him once that working as a guard didn’t pay much and was risky but I did not expect this to happen.” Mohd Burhanuddin was the youngest of five and left behind two brothers and two sisters. “Their mother died of diabetes some time ago,” said a neighbour.
His friends and family described him as a normal, quiet and hardworking man whom everyone liked. His eldest brother, Alias, 40, who works as a supervisor and lives in Pahang, said his brother had been a bilal (muezzin) at the surau in their village. As the family was walking into the morgue to identify the body, the second son, Muhammad, 32, led the way while Alias reached out and held his father’s hand. Friends who saw the body said two bullet holes, one above the other, could be seen on Mohd Burhanuddin’s left ribs but no exit wound was apparent. Muhammad said an SUV was not a suitable vehicle for transporting cash. “It’s not safe,” he cried out while shaking his head. “It should not have been used.” • See also pg2

'They looked so calm' PETALING JAYA
Witnesses say robbers seemed professional and took their time
By HAMZAH NAZARI hamzah@mmail.com.my
THEY thought someone was shooting crows at the hospital. But after taking a closer look, 48-year-old Balwant Singh and his colleague, who declined to be named, realised a robbery was taking place. At about 10.35am, the duo saw a man on a motorcycle shooting into a black sports utility vehicle (SUV) near University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC). "I was standing outside my workplace when I heard the first shot," said Balwant, of Petaling Jaya. He said his co-worker, who was standing facing him, alerted him to the commotion behind him about 20 to 30 metres away. "I looked up and saw a pillion rider holding a gun and pointing it into the side of the SUV," he said. Balwant said he then saw the shooter, a man in a red full-faced helmet, fire two more shots into the SUV seconds later. "Everything happened so fast. The robbers appeared to be professional. They were calm and daring as they didn't rush away from the scene," he

told The Malay Mail. He said he did not notice if they had removed anything from the vehicle. Balwant said it took more than 20 seconds for the people in the SUV to exit the vehicle. His co-worker said that a few moments later, she saw some people rush out of the hospital. They pulled a man from the SUV and attempted CPR on him before taking him inside. The victim was Mohd Burhanuddin Jamaluddin, a 23-year-old security guard who was on his third day of work. Met at the crime scene, Brickfields police chief ACP Wan Abdul Bari Wan Abdul Khalid said there were three security personnel inside the SUV — two in front and one at the back. He said the vehicle, a black Toyota Hilux, was carrying

cash and had stopped at a traffic lights junction as it was leaving the hospital. "Two motorcycles pulled up on either side of the SUV. The motorcycle on the driver's side had one rider, while the other motorcycle had two."
He said the robbers ordered the guards to open the doors and hand them the money as the pillion rider on the passenger side pulled out a gun. The pillion rider then opened fire, hitting Mohd Burhanuddin.
POLICE believe the money grabbed by the robbers outside the University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) yesterday was not from the hospital alone. Brickfields police chief ACP Wan Abdul Bari Wan Abdul Khalid said the money could have included collections from other companies using the services of the security company. "The guards could have made other collections elsewhere before they went to UMMC. We are working on getting details on other companies associated with the security company," he told The Malay Mail. Wan Abdul Bari said police were also looking into the possibility of the crime being an inside job. "We don't want to speculate as investigations are ongoing. However, we will be investigating if there were any inside people involved," he said.

Close call for five as corridor collapses
A CONSTRUCTION worker broke his leg but four others escaped serious injuries when the second-floor corridor of a seven-room house under renovation in Jalan Love Lane, Kampung Baru Sungai Buloh, collapsed yesterday morning. Two of the men were working on the second-floor corridor when it gave way at 9.20am, hurling them to the ground. The impact also caused the first-floor corridor to collapse. One of the men manage to crawl out from under the debris of cement and bricks but the other was stuck until firefighters arrived. A neighbour, who only

Parang men attack insurance agent By T.H. TEOH mmnews@mmail.com.my
WHEN insurance agent W.C. Chee opened his office door on Saturday morning to two men enquiring about his services, little did he know he would be a victim of a robbery which left him with three deep gashes on his face and skull. For Chee, 52, it was a typical working day when the door bell rang at his office in Subang Jaya and two men asked about his insurance packages. Without a second thought, he opened the door for the men to enter but when he turned his back, he was attacked with parangs. “The two men slashed me once on the head and pushed me to the back of the office before slashing me two more times," he said from his hospital bed following surgery. “I passed out but regained consciousness a little while later. I could hear my office being ransacked. “I managed to make my way downstairs and walked with blood oozing out of my wounds to a medical lab in SS15 just a few doors away from the office. “The staff there helped me stop the bleeding and called for an ambulance." Chee, who had 100 stitches on his scalp and face, said the assailants were in their 30s and did not wear any masks or helmets.

Shah Alam Fire and Rescue Department head Hissam Sidik said firefighters arrived within 10 minutes of receiving the distress call.

'PM must be true patriot'
Non-Malay needs to have support of majority, says Mukhriz MALAYSIA's next Prime Minister could be a nonMalay only if he is a "true patriot" and is able to obtain the support of the majority. Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir pointed out that although Barack Obama became the first African-American President of the United States, it would be difficult for a non-Malay to gain the support of the Malay majority. "According to the Constitution, the PM has to be someone who enjoys the support of the majority of MPs, and 63 per cent of the population is still bumiputra," he told a Press conference yesterday. “So, until you find a candidate from whatever ethnic

He was responding to Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz’s interview with The Edge Financial Daily published yesterday. Nazri said a non-Malay could become the Prime Minister if he was “the best person” for the job. Mukhriz, who is also an Umno supreme council member, said a non-Malay could only be Prime Minister if the person was accepted and seen as a true Malaysian. “But I must say in the US

Defence contracts need be transparent THE Opposition has never protested against the Defence Ministr y's procurement, Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua said yesterday. He was responding to a recent report quoting Defence Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as urging the Opposition not to question his ministry's need to spend on new assets during times of peace and the Auditor-General's (AG) report should "open their eyes" to reality. Ahmad Zahid had said the Royal Malaysian Air Force would buy new aviation ground support vehicles (AGSV) next year as the existing fleet had become too costly to maintain. He also said most of the AGSV were old and needed to be replaced, and the AG's report clearly showed the critical need for new assets. "We have never protested against the ministry from purchasing new equipment or vehicles. What we protested against is the lack of transparency in the manner these items were purchased.
despite his (Obama) rather strange un-American name, the US president went through the American system. He was schooled in an American way, no one thinks of him other than being an American leader," he said. "I don’t think he speaks Kenyan, so you don’t associate him with Africa. So you see Barack Obama as a true American. “Unless we get people who are true Malaysians and true patriots then perhaps that day will come." Nazri’s remark was not the first by an Umno leader that a non-Malay could become the Prime Minister. In 2008, former Prime

He said one such example was when Ahmad Zahid refused to clarify his question in Parliament on the difference between the RM7.55 billion procurement of 257 armoured personnel carriers from Deftech Sdn Bhd and the price which the minister paid to acquire these vehicles from FNSS Defence Systems, a Turkish defence manufacturer for RM1.7 billion. "Zahid claimed ignorance over the RM5.9 billion difference despite the fact he witnessed the signing of agreement in Turkey earlier this year," Pua said. "What's more important is the fact that while Zahid was quick to state his intent to acquire new AGSVs, he failed to explain or take action against discrepancies and abuse cited in the AG's report.
Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said while it was possible to have a non-Malay Prime Minister, the country was not ready for a multiracial political party. However, recently, Dr Mahathir has backed Malay right-wing group Perkasa and warned that the Malays could lose power if Barisan Nasional did not win in the next general election. O n a s e p a r at e i s s u e , Mukhriz brushed aside calls by PKR for his father, Dr Mahathir, to be put on trial for allegedly abusing his powers and infringing on basic human rights. He said Malaysia prospered economically under Dr Mahathir’s 22-year rule and denied any transgression on human rights.

Er claimed there were promotional items to Israeli products in the ministry's library.
'Opposition politicising Kg Buah Pala issue' PADANG SERAI MP N. Gobalakrishnan yesterday accused the Opposition of politicising the Kampung Buah Pala issue instead of keeping to their promise of protecting the village. Gobalakrishnan, who was thrown out of the Dewan Rakyat for causing a ruckus after an argument over Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin's tweet about the village, said the Penang State government failed to protect the village,
the oldest enclave of ethnic Indians in the state. “I am not bothered with the tweet. No one is going to benefit from it. What is important though is the fact the Penang government did not keep their promise," he told a press conference at the Parliament lobby. "Kampung Buah Pala is the only village in Malaysia that practises jallikattu, a game of taming the bulls. All this must be preserved."
He was referring to Khairy’s tweet which stated: “Mungkin dia (Penang Chief Minister L i m Gu an E ng ) rob oh Kampung Buah Pala sebab nak ganti dengan Kampung Buah Dada” (Maybe he demolished Kampung Buah Pala to replace it with Kampung Buah Dada). The tweet generated anger among the Opposition, especially Lim, as it was directed towards Lim's teenage son, accusing him of outraging the
modesty of a female schoolmate. Earlier, Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar rejected a motion by Batu Gelugor MP Karpal Singh to punish Khairy for the remark. At a separate press conference, Karpal responded to Gobalakrishnan's claims and said the Opposition was unable to do anything on the matter as the Federal Court decided against the villagers.

'Students can support parties'
Court declares provision in universities Act unconstitutional UNIVERSITY students can now express support or oppose political parties of their choice. This came following a landmark decision by the Court of Appeal yesterday declaring Section 15(5)(a) of the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 (UUCA), which restricts students expressing support for, or opposing, any political party as unconstitutional. In a 2-1 majority decision, the appellate court ruled that Section 15 (5)(a) of the Act was unreasonable and violated freedom of speech. Datuk Mohd Hishamuddin Mohd Yunus and Datuk Linton Albert allowed the appeal brought about by four former political science undergraduates of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) — Muhammad Hilman Idham, Woon King Chai, Muhammad Ismail Aminuddin and Azlin Shafina Mohamad Adza — who faced disciplinary action for being present during the campaign for the Hulu Selangor parliamentary by-election on April 24 last year. The court overturned the High Court's dismissal on Sept 28 last year of their originating sum-

mons against the government, the Higher Education Minister and the university to challenge the university's action to take disciplinary action against them. The four claimed they received notice from UKM requiring them to appear before a disciplinary tribunal to answer charges of alleged breach of Section 15(5) (a) of the Act. They were, however, found not guilty by the board. All four students graduated last month. In his judgment, Hishamuddin said Section 15(5)(a) was irrational as it impeded healthy development of the critical mind
and original thoughts of students which higher learning institutions should strive to achieve. "Universities should be the breeding ground of reformers and thinkers and not institutions to produce students trained as robots," he said. Hishamuddin said freedom of expression was one of the most fundamental rights that individuals enjoy and that right was also recognised in numerous human rights documents such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
He said most university students were of a matured age where they could enter into contracts, sue and be sued, can marry and become parents and undertake parental responsibilities, and vote in general elections if they were 21 years of age. "Yet herein lies the irony that they were told that legally they cannot say anything that can be construed as supporting or opposing a political party," he said. Linton, in his 15-page judgment, said Section violated Article 10(1) (a) of the Federal Constitution which allowed freedom of speech and expression. Datuk Wira Low Hop Bing, who dissented, ruled the restriction was necessary to prevent infiltration of political ideologies among students who were "vulnerable, capable of being subjected to peer pressure and easily influenced". This would affect the universities' primary purpose in pursuit of education. Low said it was not for the court to say the law was harsh and unjust. Instead, it was a question of policy to be debated and decided by Parliament.

BN party leaders welcome ruling
THE Court of Appeal's ruling that Section 15(5) of the Universities and University Colleges Act (UUCA) 1971 was unconstitutional has received support from Barisan Nasional component party leaders. Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong welcomed the decision, saying the matter had also been MCA Youth's struggle for some time. Wee, who is also MCA Youth chief, said the court's decision proved the judicial system was
free from interference. "When they (students) reach the voting age, it is not proper to restrict them from attending ceramahs, political campaigns and so on," he told reporters at Parliament lobby yesterday. Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamid said the UUCA was among legislations to be reviewed under the political transformation plan of Datuk Seri Najib Razak. However, he was of the opinion the whole Act could not be
said to contravene the Federal Constitution. "There was unease in society due to the rise of student power in 1974, hence the introduction of the Act. I was at that time involved personally as a student leader," Ahmad Zahid said after meeting Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Deputy Prime Minister Dr Ng Eng Hen yesterday. Ahmad Zahidi, who is also Defence Minister, said the Act should be seen positively, includ-
ing the regulation requiring students to seek permission from the Student and Alumni Affairs Department to carry out activities. He said students should also wait until graduation before entering active politics as academic achievement was more important that getting involved in politics. Ahmad Zahidi said that while the court's decision should be respected, the Act would still be subject to amendments in Parliament.

Sterner action against varsities THE Higher Education Ministry is making amendments to the Private Institution of Higher Learning (IPTS) Act to allow for sterner action, including higher fines, on private universities for various offences. Its minister, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, said the amendments were expected to be presented in Parliament next year. He said appropriate action would be taken against institutions found administering examinations to foreign students who did not attend classes. "The university will also be prohibited from taking in foreign students for the subsequent intake," he said when wrapping up the debate on the Supply Bill 2012 relating to the ministry at the Dewan Rakyat yesterday. Mohamed Khaled said the Home Ministry had already retracted approvals for foreign students from six IPTS so far this year. "Among reasons for the retraction is failure to effectively manage international students," he said. He said private universities with foreign students were required to issue quarterly reports on their foreign students, which included attendance. This monitor ing wou ld be jointly conducted by the Immigration Department. In response to a question from Azan Ismail (PKR-Indera Mahkota) on National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loan repayment through salary deduction, Mohamed Khaled said the method was expected to be implemented by 2013. He said the rumour that the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) had begun deducting salaries of loan borrowers was not true. "No salary deductions have been made so far," he said. Mohamed Khaled said if the method was adopted it would only be compulsory for new borrowers, while others would continue paying through existing channels.

He said prior to the terminal’s closure, a total of 74 buses operating from there, making around 260 trips a day while serving about 5,000 passengers. Syed Hamid said bus operators affected by the closure were given notice to move to Pudu Sentral. The companies involved are: Cityliner (Kenderaan Klang Banting Bhd), Causeway Link (Handal Ceria Sdn Bhd), Seranas/ Wawasan Sutera and Rapid KL.

Bus passengers lamented the changes would affect senior citizens and the disabled. Most preferred the bus terminal, claiming Pudu Sentral as too far from the nearest LRT station. Traders feared the closure of the terminal affected their livelihood while claiming they had no other place to go.

Transport masterplan to roll out next year
THE National Land Public Transport Masterplan (NLPTM) will go on as schedule regardless of whether there are changes or delays in the MRT project, Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar said yesterday. He said the process for the masterplan would continue as
scheduled and was expected to be released next year, with a 20-year lifeline. “Currently, we are at the drafting stage with regular interaction with our consultant," Syed Hamid said when asked whether changes or delays in the MRT project would affect the rollout of the masterplan.
"Once ready, we intend to post it online and hope for feedback from the public, hopefully by next year." An online news portal reported on Sunday the masterplan had been ready since September and SPAD was awaiting inputs from other key stakeholders, including City Hall, the Finance Ministry,

The case was set for decision yesterday. In her decision, Yong Zarida ordered Nadia, whose real name is Siti Naziyah Sheikh Mustafa, 35, to pay the sum at an interest of four per cent from today until full settlement, and costs. In the suit filed on April 21 last year, Lisdawati claimed Nadia had maliciously given an interview which contained defamatory words to the magazine's journalist Hanif Abdul Ghani. Lisdawati claimed the interview was held in January 2005
and an article on the interview was published in the Jan 8-14, 2005, edition of the magazine. She claimed the words in the article were meant to mean she borrowed money from Nadia and failed to pay the debt. Nadia, in her defence statement on May 18, claimed the article was not defamatory. She said it was intended to get the debtor to pay the debts.

36 million tourists targeted by 2020
MALAYSIA is expected to welcome a total of 36 million foreign tourists by 2020 with an estimated revenue of RM168 billion, said Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen. She said the target was achievable with implementation of the 12 strategic initiatives under the National Key Result Areas for tourism such as "Luxury Malaysia" and "Agrotourism." "Malaysia had 24.6 million tourists from all over the world last year with tourism revenue totalling RM56.4 billion. This showed an income of more than RM1 billion a week. Here, we see tourism as an agent for economic prosperity for the rakyat," she said after winding up debate on the Supply Bill 2012 for the ministry at the Dewan Rakyat yesterday. Dr Ng said Malaysians should emphasise cleanliness to attract
tourists. She said since the 9th Malaysia Plan (9MP), the ministry received proposals for tourism projects from state governments but only had allocations to implement between 30 and 40 per cent of the projects. "The ministry must give priority to viable projects, facilities and deliveries in line with the tourism plans of state governments such as the Malacca tourism heritage and Sabah agro tourism." Dr Ng said through the first "rolling-plan" of the 10th Malaysia Plan, Malacca allocated RM118 million to develop 17 high-impact tourism projects. She said under the 10MP, the government also allocated RM27 million to upgrade tourism infrastructure on such islands as Pulau Pangkor, Pulau Sibu and Pulau Duyong.

Next-door foreigners fuss Section 15, Shah Alam, folks fed up of neighbours' alien way of life, apathetic developers
RESIDENTS of Dataran Otomobil in Section 15, Shah Alam, are experiencing a 'culture shock' of sorts due to a big foreign presence in their midst. They complain the nonMalaysian residents are not neighbourly enough while the building management is indifferent to their grouses on facilities and security. Says one of them, AZLAN, who lives in one of the area's many shop-houses: "Foreigners make up most of residents here, as many work here." "They tend to blast the radio day and night, loiter in big groups in the open and even play football on the main road. "They also spit out chewed tobacco on staircases and walls beside leaving piles of garbage across the flats in front of doors. This results in a stench that encourage maggots to thrive." The Hotline Roving Team, which checked the place, even spotted opened durian fruits dumped along a staircase and an airwell being turned into a dumping ground for garbage and household items like mattresses. AZLAN claims they also damage private properties. "My bike was damaged the other day, in which both sidemirrors were broken. I also lost two pairs of shoes." He says other problems include thefts and burglaries, as
well as social problems, such as scantily-dressed women behaving inappropriately with their countrymen in the open, beside the many nightspots n the area. AZLAN claims the building management seems to take residents' complaints for granted. "For example, the lamp on the stairs at my block is often damaged. This occurs almost three times a month. "When I made a complaint, the management always responds too slowly, so I have to call repeatedly." The management told him the electricity supply box was two years old. He had suggested they lodge a report with Tenaga Nasional Berhad, but claims they not only ignored it but hinted he do it himself. "We are very worried about security here, especially parents, who are afraid to let their children out without supervision. Crime will also occur if this is allowed to persist." ● SHAH ALAM Municipal Council public relations officer Shahrin Ahmad says all internal rubbish and general hygiene issues will be forwarded to the Section 15 developers. "We will issue a notice for them to do so if they do not comply. They have already taken care of garbage issues in the streets on a weekly basis." He says security and social issues, such as theft, property

damage, loitering and inappropriate behaviour, will be forwarded to the police. "We will request their cooperation in doing their rounds more frequently here. We also hope residents will point out the more problematic areas for us to focus on."
GET A LOAD OF THIS! Garbage-filled airwell reveals total disregard for cleanliness
On the electricity issue, Shahrin says it is the developers' duty to carry out this responsibility and it should be dealt with whenever the need arises. He says the same also applies to any damages to the building that needs to be attended to.
When contacted, Section 15 developer Magna Prima Berhad says they are now looking into the matter. Says its executive director, Lawrence Lee: "We will investigate each issue first before coming up with ways to resolve them.
"We have also spoken to property owners and urged them to be conscientious in choosing their tenants, as well as requested for them to act more responsibly." He says the management will continue to engage residents for the betterment of the community. On the other hand, Shah Alam police OCPD ACP Tuan Zahedi Ayob says they can only deal with social problems faced if anyone is found to have broken the law. "We do have regular patrols, but these issues can be dealt with via social programmes organised by the local authorities. Any reports of actual crime should be forwarded directly to the police rather than the media." Meanwhile, Immigration Department director-general Datuk Alias Ahmad says the issue of renting out homes to immigrants is not under their jurisdiction but that of local authorities. "However, we can take action to the premises owner if there are illegal immigrants found smuggling or trafficking goods." When contacted, AZLAN says residents will lodge police reports if they see any serious crime in the area. "I am also satisfied the authorities are striving to ensure Section 15 is properly maintained."

The website, http://undasonline. com/, is aimed mainly at the millions of overseas Filipinos who cannot visit the graves of their departed relatives today, a widespread tradition in this largely-Catholic nation. Up until the Nov 8, the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines said it will offer masses for those who request such prayers through the website. — AFP

Unesco accepts Palestine Symbolic victory does not sit well with US and Israel
Palestinians won entry to Unesco yesterday, scoring a symbolic victory in their battle for full membership of the United Nations in a move that Israel and the US said harmed hopes for peace. "The general conference decides to admit Palestine as a member of Unesco," said the resolution that was adopted to loud applause by 107 countries, with 14 voting against and 52 abstaining. "Accepting Palestine into Unesco is a victory for (our) rights, for justice and for freedom," Mahmud Abbas' spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeina quoted the Palestinian president as saying. Palestinian foreign minister Riyad al-Malki, who was at the UN cultural body's Paris headquarters for the vote, hailed "a historic moment that gives Palestine back some of its rights," while Israel said it distanced peace. agreement," the Israeli foreign ministry said in a statement. White House spokesman Jay Carney said the move was "premature and undermines the international community's shared goal of a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the Middle East." But Malki insisted there
was no connection between the Unesco move and the possible resumption of peace negotiations, stalled by Israel's ongoing construction of settlements in occupied Palestinian territory. "I don't think that our status at Unesco will have a negative impact on relaunch-
ing peace talks," Malki said. "There is no link between the two issues." France, which had voiced serious doubts about the motion, in the end approved it along with almost all Arab, African, Latin American and Asian nations, including China and India. Israel, the United States, C an a d a , Au s t r a l i a an d Germany voted against, while Japan and Britain abstained. The United States and Israel are set now to withdraw their funding from the UN cultural body, while other UN agencies may have to debate the thorny issue. Head of famed London cathedral quits Th e head of St Paul's Cathedral resigned on yesterday due to criticism he faced over moves to evict protesters inspired by the Occupy Wall Street movement from outside the London landmark. Graeme Knowles (pic), the dean of the cathedral in London's financial district, said his position had become "untenable" amid a row over the hundreds of demonstrators who forced the closure of the church last week. "The past fortnight has been a testing time for the chapter and for me personally," Knowles said in a statement read out by a church official to the media. "It has become increasingly clear to me that, as criticism of the cathedral has mounted in the Press, media and in public opinion, my position as dean of St Paul's was becoming untenable," he added. Knowles is the third churchman to resign over the row at the historic cathedral, which announced last week that it was taking legal action to remove more than 200 tents which sprung up in the churchyard two weeks ago. — AFP

Philippines, Bangladesh and Cambodia declare historic births
THE world welcomed its symbolic "seven billionth" baby yesterday but celebrations were tempered by worries over the strain that humanity's population explosion is putting on a fragile planet. The United Nations said by its best estimates, the seven billionth baby would be born on Oct 31, and countries around the world have been marking the demographic milestone in a variety of ways. Russian authorities showered gifts on newborns, while Papua New Guinea handed out special "goody bags" for new mothers. The Philippines was the first country to declare a seven billionth baby, a little girl named Danica May Camacho. Weighing 2.5 kilos, Danica was delivered just before midnight on Sunday under a blitz of media camera flashes at Manila's Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital. "She looks so lovely," her mother, Camille Dalura, whispered as she cradled her baby girl. "I can't believe she is the world's seven billionth."
UN rights chief Navi Pillay said in a statement marking the seven billion milestone: "From the moment the child was born, he or she — like every other child born today or any other day — should be guaranteed freedom from fear and want, protection from discrimination and abuse, and equal access to security, justice and respect as a member of the human family." In Bangladesh, authorities named another baby girl the world's seven billionth child. Weighing 2.75 kilos and named Oishee, she arrived a minute after midnight at a hospital in the capital Dhaka. In Cambodia, the honour fell to a baby girl who has yet to be named. Weighing three kilos, she was born in the southern province of Preah Sihanouk, her parents' fifth child. However, Indian Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said the birth of the seven billionth child was "not a matter of joy but a great worry". "We shouldn't be celebrating," he told The Times of India. "For us a matter of joy will be when the population stabilises." — AFP

MICROSOFT founder Bill Gates coolly parried some harsh criticism from late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, in an interview with ABC television yesterday, saying their professional rivalry was positive. Gates, who maintained a long rivalry with the Apple innovator, was asked about an authorised biography of Jobs by Walter Isaacson which portrayed Gates as comparatively uninspired as a creative spirit. The Microsoft founder was told by ABC that Jobs "basically said that you were 'unimaginative, had never invented anything and shamelessly ripped off other people's ideas.' That's pretty tough stuff. What's your reaction to that?" "Well, Steve and I worked together, you know, ... creating the Mac. We had more people on it, did the key software for it," Gates explained.

By KARINA FOO karina@mmail.com.my RAISE one hand up if you love authentic Chinese dim sum? Raise the other if you wish you could just grab them on the go? Now that you’ve dropped the newspaper, you’d agree that while many flock to fine-dining Chinese restaurants serving this popular delicacy, some of us may just like to skip all that and enjoy the same good quality and delicious“heart-touching”snacks without the fuss and waiting. That’s when you can come to New Shanghai at The Pavilion KL where an abundant and delectable array of dim sum is laid out buffet style for you to either dine in or take-away. If you choose to dine in, select your favourites, bring them to the counter and be seated while the staff prepare your choices and serve them to you. Meanwhile, take a few moments to travel back in time to the old cobbled streets of Shanghai with the restaurant’s timeless ornaments and decorations. For take-away, your choices are carefully packed up in a bag with pictures of old Shanghai memories — it’s like a bakery with added value of better quality and service. Prices start at RM2.80 per piece and there are over 80 choices of steamed and deep fried dim sum as well as desserts. “Although many items are popular, the ones that are most sought after by customers are the chicken feet, glutinous rice, pumpkin dumpling, caviar dumpling and
the BBQ chicken buns from the steamed selections. For the fried dishes, the Shanghai dumpling, sweet potato biscuit, mango prawn spring-roll and fried yam are the first ones to go,” said Kenneth Ang, founder and co-owner of New Shanghai. While there’s only so much dim sum that a few people at the table can have, we were undoubtedly impressed with some of these popular choices. The deep fried morsels are nicely seasoned but not overly greasy. Even the flakes and pastries are tasty and not doughy or dry. So, although anything deep-fried wouldn’t be the healthiest choice, it was too good to resist especially when dipped into chili sauce. The steamed choices too had the freshest meat and seafood that were pre-marinated with sauces that turned out delicious after cooking. Ancient stories with a twist to tradition Ang, and his business partners wanted New Shanghai to be more than just your one-stop dim sum restaurant. While the delicacies are already made with generous amounts of the right ingredients, Ang added other “special occasion” selections to the menu for special occasions and celebrations in remembrance of long-forgotten

Even if there are no special celebrations, these irresistible buns are desirable with their immaculately smooth, rotund surfaces that you just have to sink your teeth into. The giant buns are stuffed with the smaller buns, while the latter surrounds the giant bun — think, baby buns with their mummy! STAYING healthy means eating right and exercising regularly. But eating right doesn't necessarily mean stuffing yourself with raw salads and power shots that taste like medicine. But what if, there was something for you to get healthy with, that it is delicious, nutritious and easily available? That's right. For the health-conscious individual, be prepared to be spoilt for choice at the Show "U" Cafe Bar in Sunway Pyramid. Taking the business plunge WHEN you hear about people operating a food and beverage (F&B) business in an up-market shopping centre and when there is plenty of stiff competition, these entrepreneurs are definitely taking a risk to step out of their boundaries when most of us are secured in our own jobs. Call it being intrepid or even taking a gamble, as doing business involves hard labour and insurmountable levels of stress. But the enterprising Ang isn’t a stranger to hard work as this is what he does to ensure his customers are satisfied. This comes from his
solid 20 years experience in the F&B industry. While he brings this much industry knowledge to the table, he admits that he is relentless in his pursuit of perfection so that his restaurant will stand out among the rest. “It al boils down to planning. You’ll only reach your goals if you plan properly and are always on the ball. I am a perfectionist and if it’s not going to be good and up to my standards, then I might as well not do it at all” said Ang. Also, operating any type of business involves a good team who works well with everybody in order to see it thrive. Ang
said that he spent three to four months looking for such people and now that he’s found them, he has time to relax and workout at the gym, six days a week. “My mind’s constantly creating new ideas and business strategies and although that’s already a mental workout, I need to tire myself physically. So to sleep well, I need to expend my energy by exercising otherwise I’ll feel restless and edgy.” That’s what you call a “healthy body, healthy mind”. “When we first opened six months ago, we expected business to be slow as it was a new place and people needed to

Take your pick from the season-inspired beverage names like Spring-a-licious, Summer Rio, Autumnation, Blue Mondays, Greendays and Funtime. know about us. But it has picked up and I’m happy to see its progress and we will continue to grow and improve it,” said Ang. So yes, while having a business may look easy, any entrepreneur will tell you that it really is hard to call the shots. But according to Ang, when you’re passionate about what you’re doing, it isn’t work, it’s play. — By KARINA FOO MOVER AND SHAKER: The Signature Crush designed to detox the system

Tang and Ma air views on acting WHETHER you're a popular actor or you’re simply yearning to be one, it’s the audience who decides your fate — literally. "I think audiences today are very smart. They know what they're looking for," said Hong Kong TVB actor, Kenneth Ma. The tall and lanky actor, who flew in from Singapore was in town for the Television Networks Screenings 2012 Media Prima Nite Live earlier today at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. With him was another successful actress, Joyce Tang. Recently seen handling more bad-guy roles than playing Mr Nice like he used to, Ma said he did not mind which role he played — good or bad. "Actually, it is fun playing a ‘bad guy’ especially from an actor's point of view. "I actually want to take on a more dramatic role as an actor. But I, especially, would love to try out theatre or film."
Story and pix by Loong Wai Ting waiting@mmail.com.my Joyce Tang, on the other hand, shared that all she wanted was to film more dramas in Hong Kong. She had just completed a sitcom which began airing in Hong Kong yesterday. "I want to try out playing a mute person, without the VO (voice-over) to back my whole acting. I want to challenge myself to rely
solely on my emotion and facial expression to express my feeling," she said. At the same time, Ma, who had just finished filming a medical drama, On-Call 36 Hours has been busy jetsetting around the world, all in the name of work. "I was in Malaysia a couple of weeks ago for a promo, then I was off to New Zealand and Singapore for a TV sales presentation," he said. "After that, I will be back to shoot a new drama." When asked if they would be tying the knot with their other halves, both actors remained open-minded about the matter. "Well, to me, love is a funny thing, when it comes, it comes...," was all Tang had to say. And the same thing applied to Ma as well. He said: "I'm okay about it, too... But that depends on your fate. When you're ready, why not?"

TVB dramas give rise to popular stars "Luck is very important in this industry", so said hot Hong Kong TVB actor, Michael Tse at the Press conference and official launch of My Astro On Demand (AOD) 2011 online voting campaign in Kuala Lumpur recently. Tse gained popularity for his role as “Laughing Sir” in the TVB drama series Lives of Omission which had its run on AOD recently. In the drama, Tse was seen reprising his role as a police informant. However, the actor, who had recently become a regular face on the entertainment page would not hesitate to recommend local delicacies such as his favourite seafood curry to his accompanying work colleagues, Ruco Chan and Kenneth Ma. What was hot on the topic, though, was whether Tse felt "threatened" by colleague, Chan, who recently enjoyed a rise in popularity after appearing in another successful TVB drama series, The Other Truth where Chan played a lawyer. "Threatened? Definitely not,” said Tse. “A lot of veteran actors in this industry should be afraid of me now. But I’m certainly not
HOT FAVOURITES: Chan (left) with ‘Laughing Sir,’ Tse threatened. After all, everyone has equal opportunity and their moment-of-glory. It's something every actor wants. "Grab every opportunity there is and put in 100 per cent effort. To me, that's more important. There are a lot of
things that are beyond our thoughts and plans, so when the time comes, hold on tight to the opportunity," he said. For Chan, however, he never for a moment thought of being a picky actor, instead he grabbed every role that
was offered to him. "I never choose the role that I feel like playing. Previously, audiences recognised me through the countless bad guy roles that I played. I want to be able to try out different roles before finally taking on something
much more bigger," he said. Like Tse, Chan has been a regular face to the country. He said: "I usually come to Malaysia on a personal holiday. I always come for golf and diving, and of course the local food." While both the actors
admitted that there were many strong contenders at the AOD Favourite 2011 list, Tse said this has been a very good year. "There were a lot of interesting productions that were released and I was quite lucky to have three dramas under my belt. But if I had to choose the most favourite female actress off the list, that would be my co-star from Lives of Omission which is Madam Jo, played by Fala Chen," Tse related. "But I'll leave that to the audience." The Astro On Demand Favourite 2011 voting campaign started from Oct 21 and will go on until Nov 15 and is open to all Astro subscribers. The campaign allows its customers to vote for their favourite artistes and drama series under the 10 categories, including My Favourite Actor in a Leading Role, My Favourite Actress in a Leading Role, My Favourite on Screen Couple and My Favourite Drama Theme Song. Results of the campaign will be announced through MYFM and Astro On Demand official website. For more information, visit www.astro.com.my/myaod —By LOONG WAI TING

A spiritual journey First-person narrative about rediscovering life By Siti NurSuraya Ali suraya@mmail.com.my TITLE: The Aleph of Faith. Author: Paulo Coelho PUBLISHER: Alfred A. Knopf Publications Rating: 8/10 After a three-year hiatus, Brazillian author Paulo Coelho is back with another book, called The Aleph. Though he predominantly writes in Portuguese, Coelho’s works have been translated to over 60 languages globally, with the most prominent one remaining his 1988 work The Alchemist, which sold 300 million copies. The Aleph, which in Hebrew refers to “Number One”, or “the focal starting point of all lives”, is true to Coelho’s forte where he gets spiritualas well as personal. The novel narrates Coelho’s own story from a first-person point-of view, documenting his transformation from someone who was questioning
his own faith to a person who rediscovers the beauty of life, belief and everything associated with it. Paulo is known for writing “meaningful” books, which is why his writings are anything but frivolous entertainment. But unlike Robin Sharma and other authors who write textbooks bordering on preaching about spirituality, Paulo persuades and draws in his readers by merely telling a story. The Aleph’s success lies in its relativity. Being inspired by a true story, the novel is very personal, but also at the same time tries to touch a level of spirituality hitherto unexplored in the literature world. You need not subscribe to Paulo’s religion or his spiritual
pilgrimage (which many people would categorise as witchcraft), the underlining issues this book addresses can appeal to any human if they could detach from the religious aspect of the author’s descriptions. It also takes lots of guts to write something this personal, something that doesn’t preach about his own success like what most successful men do, but instead admitting to his vulnerability. If you have read Paulo’s works before and are a readymade fan of his, then this is the book for you. If you are feeling down spiritually, then this book will be worth picking up and spending a couple of hours a day to pore over.

Aim for quality not medals, says Sea Games chef-de-mission By Haresh Deol haresh@mmail.com.my
THERE should not be a fixation over the number of gold medals the national contingent is expected to win at the upcoming Sea Games in Indonesia. Chef-de-mission Datuk Naim Mohammad said the Games should be an avenue for the athletes to prove their worth and beat their personal records instead. "The target of 60 gold medals is based on the recommendations by the respective sports associations. It is not my personal target," said Naim. "It is not impossible but I believe the team managers of the respective sports should know better. "When I look at the recommendations, some sports have underrated their capabilities while some sports seem to be overly ambitious." Naim singled out cycling as
CONFIDENT: Naim says the cycling tem can do better than two gold medals
being overly cautious with their projection of only two gold medals. "I'm in cycling (as the Malaysian National Cycling Federation deputy president) and I know our cycling team can do better than two gold medals. But there are
some sports who believe they can clinch six gold medals when four would be a more realistic projection," said Naim, not wanting to mention the sports that are being bullish of their projection. The national football team will face an uphill battle defending
their title as they have been drawn in the "group of death" together with host Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore and Cambodia. Meanwhile, Naim added the organisers have agreed to listen to his plea of allowing the national athletes and team officials to stay together at the Games Village. Initially, the organisers had planned to house athletes at the Games Village while the officials will stay in hotels. "We go as a team and it is only right for all of us to stay at the same place together. It will be easier for the officials to manage and interact with the athletes and vice versa," added Naim. A total of 43 sports offering 542 events will be held during the Games scheduled from Nov 11-22 in Jakarta and Palembang. Malaysia managed an overall haul of 68 gold medals at the 2007 Korat Sea Games and 40 gold medals at the following edition in Laos.

Who let the dogs out?

THE dissatisfaction of umpires have reached proper avenues but several parties are apparently more interested to know who leaked the matter to The Malay Mail. In another email to Mailsport yesterday, it was revealed that the Umpires Committee have been in ''panic mode'' and have called all umpires for a dialogue session on Nov 6. "No doubt coming forward has helped our plight but several people are more interested in find-
ing out who leaked the letter to the Press," said a senior umpire. The umpires saga started when Mailsport reported the matter last Thursday, pursuant to an anonymous letter regarding the disappointment of the handling of disciplinary matters by the Umpires Committee and Technical Committee. The letter also listed four cases in which there was either a delay in the disciplinary proceedings or that players walked away with light sentences. It was learnt that another letter was sent by the umpires to Tengku Abdullah, citing the Board's disregard to
umpires' technical advancement initiative. According to a source, the dialogue session was only held because the Umpires Committee will have to explain the whole episode to Malaysian Hockey Federation (MHF) president Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah during the MHF council meeting scheduled on the final day of the Sultan of Johor Cup. The email yesterday questioned the urgency for such a session as Nov 6 is a public holiday in conjunction with Hari Raya Haji. There are four Muslim
umpires in MHF. "They probably want to brush the matter off when they meet Tengku Abdullah. They can say they have met the umpires and all disciplinary issues will be dealt with accordingly in the future," said the source. "Religious festivals, big or small, are sensitive privileges for the multiracial community in this country. The question then again arises, could meetings of such nature be held during Chinese New Year or Deepavali, Hari Raya Puasa or Christmas? Is this an excepted norm in this country?"

Irfan to leave Turtles, Mat Zan tipped to take over TERENGGANU coach Irfan Bakti Abu Salim announced that he would leave the Malaysia Cup runners-up when his contract expires on Nov 31. The Kelantan-born coach, 60, told reporters that he would not extend his contract although he feels his tenure with Terengganu was his best experience. "The de cision was made after discussing the matter with the Terengganu Football Association (TFA). It was a mutual decision but I will not forget the good times with the team," he told reporters after a
TFA meeting yesterday. "I really feel sad to leave Terengganu but I had to make
the decision for the future of the team and myself." Under his tutelage for two seasons, Terengganu won the FA Cup, finished as runners-up in the Super League and Malaysia Cup. Since taking over two seasons ago, Irfan had transformed Terengganu into a team that has since gained a reputation as one of the top teams in the country. Meanwhile, TFA president Datuk Che Mat Jusoh said former Kuala Lumpur player-turnedcoach, Mat Zan Mat Aris (pic), would be Irfan's replacement.
Che Mat said the decision to appoint Mat Zan, who coached Pos Malaysia this season, was made after Irfan had informed Terengganu that he would not extend his contract when it expires on Nov 31. "We contacted Mat Zan and he agreed although it has not been formalised. Based on his previous record we believe Mat Zan can continue the good work of Irfan," he said. Mat Zan is no stranger to Terengganu as he had led the team to a memorable Malaysia Cup victory in 2009. — Bernama

Red Bull boss knows Vettel won't jeopardise himself
RED BULL have faith that Sebastian Vettel (pic) is not taking too many risks in his pursuit of fastest laps — even though the team admit they do not like the world champion pushing so hard for the accolade. Vettel set the fastest lap of the Indian Grand Prix on Sunday at the very end of the race — just a fortnight after telling his bosses that he would not push for such a feat again. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said the team were not in favour of the pursuit of fastest laps, but reckoned that Vettel was intelligent enough not to throw away a race result to chase them.
When asked if Vettel had asked for permission to set the fastest lap at the end of the GP, Horner told Autosport: "Of course not because he knows we don't like it. We had done our best to manage it, we had turned all the engine modes down, KERS off, and short of putting a cow on the circuit there was not a lot else we could do. "We have complete trust in him. I am sure he still had the margin in there, and the main aim for him is to win the race. He knows there are no points for fastest laps, but he likes those little statistics to complete a perfect weekend." Horner mentioned the
fastest lap over the radio to Vettel after the chequered flag, having had talks about the matter in South Korea.
"We spoke about it after the last race and he apologised and said, 'Sorry, it won't happen again.' And two weeks later, here we are. "But he is a sensible boy, he knows. I am sure that he builds in a pretty big margin but I think he wanted to demonstrate what speed he was capable of here," he said. Meanwhile, Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone hailed the inaugural Indian Grand Prix a success. With improvements to the infrastructure already in the pipeline for next year after a wide range of teething problems were experienced over last weekend, Ecclestone
sees only a positive future for the event. "I am very, very happy with it and I think everyone else is as well, there is nothing to complain about," he said. "They only need to work on bits and pieces. But this is a prototype, as soon as they get down and have a good look they will find things to improve and I am sure they will improve them." Ecclestone confessed to feeling anxious in the buildup to the event about the track not being ready in time, but says organisers put in a huge effort to get things in place. "I was only nervous, a little bit, before because I
thought it wasn't going to get completed. I kept seeing photographs every day and they kept improving everything. "Normally you get people complaining if there is something to complain about, but I haven't heard any complaints — nothing." Ecclestone also believes the large turnout for the first race, with 95,000 spectators attending on race day, bodes well. "It is super. If you had said to these people three years ago, Formula 1, they would not know what you are talking about. I thought it was great. A great crowd, a great atmosphere."

Wozniacki must back up statistics with Majors STATISTICALLY, Caroline Wozniacki (pic) remains the best female tennis player in the world but the controversy over her No 1 status showed no signs of abating after her season ended in disappointment at the WTA Championships. True, the 21-year-old Dane won six titles, amassed more victories (63) than any of her rivals and topped the end of year rankings for a second consecutive year. However, when asked who was the standout player of 2011, none of the seven other women who qualified for the season-ending finale in Istanbul named Wozniacki. Former world No 1 Maria Sharapova, who battled back to the top four from injury, was mentioned, as was the player of the moment Petra Kvitova, who capped a remarkable season by winning the Championships undefeated yesterday. Czech Kvitova has emerged as the new force in women's tennis and there is an air of inevitability about her rise to the top of the tree after she beat another challenger to Wozniacki, Victoria Azarenka, to win the prestigious title on her debut. The 21-year-old is not there yet — she still lags 100 or so points behind Wozniacki — but with a Grand Slam title to her name already and a destructive game that, when working,
is almost unstoppable, the Wimbledon champion appears to be the No 1 in waiting. But what of Wozniacki? Despite spending all but a week as No 1 since last October, she failed to reach a single Grand Slam final this year and her lack of a Major among her 18 career titles is beginning to weigh heavily on her shoulders. While the WTA Tour points to the fact that the rankings system rewards consistency, the fact that Wozniacki has so far failed to shine on the big stage
gives plenty of ammunition to those who say she is there by default. Wozniacki, the theory goes, has benefited from injuries to the likes of Serena Williams and Kim Clijsters and from the fact that some of her peers are still developing their games. Williams, and before her the likes of Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf and Monica Seles, used to provide the ultimate benchmark for women's tennis in various spells of domination but Wozniacki, despite racking up victories, points and dollars, lacks that authority. She may still be just 21, but both Serena and Venus Williams, Seles, Graf, Martina Hingis and Sharapova all had a clutch of Grand Slam titles in the bag at the same age. All of those, with the exception of Hingis whose brain was possibly her greatest strength, could also dominate opponents in a way that Wozniacki's solid percentage game cannot. When it gets down to the later stages of a Major, the chances are Wozniacki will run into a player with the weapons to break down her barricades. "She's certainly not the best player in the world at her best, but at her worst she's probably the best player in the world compared to the others," former men's world No 1 Mats Wilander said this week. — Reuters

MOSCOW: FOOTBALL
Anzhi snubs rumours of Eto'o PSG loan move ANZHI MAKHACHKALA have scotched rumours that star Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o could be loaned out to French side Paris St Germain during the Russian Premier League's winter break. It appeared Eto'o may be in favour of such a move. The www.insidefootball. com website reported Eto'o as telling French television channel Canal Plus: "If the opportunity arises, we will see." However Anzhi Press spokesman Alexander Udaltsov said Eto'o has since categorically denied telling French media he would consider the opportunity to turn out for PSG. "When we contacted him Eto'o said these rumours are completely false," Udaltsov said. "He didn't say anything about this move. He will confirm it later on the Anzhi official site." It is not the first time Eto'o, who joined Anzhi on a multi-million euro move in August, has been linked with a loan move away from the club — which is based in Dagestan, one of Russia's most impoverished and violent regions. Earlier this month, La Gazzetta dello Sport claimed Eto'o had approached former club Inter Milan about a possible loan move back to the Nerazzurri during the Russian winter break, which lasts from November to March. On that occasion, Eto'o was back in Milan for a visit during the international break and went shopping in Milan's chic commercial area with his wife. The newspaper claimed he could sign a loan deal similar to the one that brought David Beckham to AC Milan during the Major League S occer (MLS) off-season in the United States. It said Eto'o could play for two months in January and February once the transfer window opens again on Jan 2 before returning to his club for the start of the new Russian season on Mar 3. However, no reply was issued to these rumours either by the Russian club or by Eto'o himself. — AFP

Italian mystery
Milan ease fears over Cassano illness AC MILAN striker Antonio Cassano is said to be on the mend after a mystery illness confined him to hospital for the last two nights. Cassano was taken ill on Milan's return from Rome in the early hours of Sunday morning, following a 3-2 win over Roma, and the 29-year-old was admitted to the Policlino Hospital in Milan. He was suffering from difficulties in his speech and movement. In hospital, Cassano was transferred to specialist departments where he was to undergo tests on his heart and brain. Speaking yesterday before the rest of the squad left for B elarus, where they will play BATE B orisov in a Champions League
match tomorrow, coach Massimiliano Allegri moved to ease fears. "Antonio is doing very well (on the pitch) and also on Saturday in Rome he had a great 20 minutes (after coming on as a substitute)," said Allegri. "But the important thing right now is that he returns and is healed of the most dangerous thing. "We hope to have him back as soon as possible, maybe even after the international break (which begins next week). "I spoke with him yesterday and from his messages he seemed calm and recovering. "The whole team is in shock and very disappointed with what has happened." Cassano is the second
Milan player to come down with an unexpected problem following Gennaro Gattuso, who has developed an eye problem and been left with an accentuated squint. Milan refused to discuss what exactly Cassano's problem is but chief executive Adriano Galliani expects him to be back soon. "We hope everything will be fine but he's in good spirits and seemed calm to me," said Galliani. "It's something completely unexpected, it's a bit similar to Gattuso's, it's never happened in life. "But Cassano is strong, just as is Rino (Gattuso), everything will be fine." — AFP
INTER MILAN and Juventus have been fined by Italian sports justice authorities for the behaviour of their fans during the pair's Serie A clash on Saturday. Inter have been hit with a €20,000 fine after their supporters unfurled a ban-
ner evoking memories of the 1985 Heysel stadium tragedy. The banner read: "Low quality steel, nostalgia for Heysel." Thirty nine Juventus fans died and around 600 were injured when a wall col-
lapsed at the Heysel stadium ahead of the 1985 European Cup final between the Italians and Liverpool. The fans were trying to escape a group of Liverpool fans who had breached a fence separating them from their Italian rivals.

It is not the first time Juve have been fined for such chants by their fans. When Italy and Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli, who is of Ghanaian origin, was at Inter he was regularly targeted by the Turin club's fans. — AFP
Loew spoilt for choice
GERMANY coach Joachim Loew (pic) has admitted he will struggle to leave behind several players when he names his final 23-man squad for what he hopes will be a triumphant Euro 2012 campaign.
Loew's side eased into next summer's showpiece in Poland and Ukraine by winning all 10 of their qualifiers, but the 51-year-old handler said leaving behind some quality players could be more difficult. "We have a good thirty or so players who tick all the boxes and meet our expectations," Loew told the German football federation's website. "So I will have a few difficult choices to make, and some bad news to announce." Germany, third place finishers at the 2010 World Cup, are one of the form teams in Europe and Loew wants
to finish the year on a high in their two remaining preChristmas friendlies — against Ukraine on November 7 and the Netherlands four days later. "We want to finish the year on a high. These kinds of matches... are not just friendlies," he added. "But I'll be giving chances to a few younger players." Germany haven't won a major title since Euro 96, but key player Mesut Oezil believes that could all change. "I look at things positively because we have a very young team that is hungry for suc-
cess," said the Real Madrid midfielder. "We've won our ten matches (qualifiers) — our aim now is to win the trophy, and I'm sure that's something we can achieve." A lt houg h happy wit h Germany's qualifying campaign, Loew stressed: "Records fade, but titles remain. "Our dream is to triumph at the Euro 2012 but we can't afford to just focus on Spain and Holland (2010 World Cup finalists). "We have to pay close attention to class teams like England, France and Italy." — AFP

Harry's Spurs in double Devils raid HARRY REDKNAPP is hoping to boost his Champions League ambitions by making a double raid on Manchester United for Rio Ferdinand and Michael Owen. Ferdinand was dropped for the game with Everton after his performance against Manchester City in the 6-1 mauling at Old Trafford and is now no longer certain of a place in the starting XI under Sir Alex Ferguson. The White Hart Lane boss could offer him temporary way out to ensure he gets enough game time ahead of next summer’s European Championships. Redknapp would also be interested in taking Owen on loan until the end of the season, as the former Liverpool and Real Madrid forward would bring much valued experience and threat to the team.

United seeking a touch of Klaas MANCHESTER UNITED are reportedly eyeing Schalke striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar as a possible replacement for Dimitar Berbatov. The Dutch hitman has rediscovered his form following unsuccessful spells at Real Madrid and AC Milan, and United are now monitoring his situation with Berbatov seemingly on his way out of Old Trafford. Huntelaar has hit an impressive 16 goals in 18 appearances this season, but with his contract due to expire in 2013, Schalke may be forced to cash in on the striker in January rather than risk losing him on the cheap in the summer. Berbatov, meanwhile, is out of contract in July, and United will surely be keen to recoup some of the money spent on him, meaning a swap deal for Huntelaar could well be on the cards.

Agent claims Blues want Giovinco CHELSEA are keen on Parma's 24year-old Italian forward Sebastian Giovinco, although he is joint owned and Juventus. Giovinco has revealed he would consider a return to the Serie A giants where he spent his youth career, but only if Juventus confirm he will replace Alessandro Del Piero, who is expected to leave at the end of the season. But his agent, Andrea D'Amico, was eager to talk about a possible move to Chelsea in the future. "It's no mystery that Roman Abramovich likes Giovinco. Also, Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas loves the player's technical qualities, and this means he is someone who understands (football)," D'Amico told Sportal.it.

Machine Gunners Form gives Arsenal belief for Marseille game
ROBIN VAN PERSIE'S electric form and Arsenal's return to winning ways have given the English side belief they can beat any team in Europe before hosting Olympique Marseille in a Group F Champions League match tomorrow. Despite some lapses at the back, Arsenal played some outstanding football in their 5-3 win at Chelsea on Saturday, with van Persie sparking the victory with a hattrick to take his goal tally to 28 in his last 27 Premier League games. After a stuttering start to the season, confidence has improved thanks to a run of five successive wins in all competitions, which they are
confident of extending at the Emirates Stadium against their French visitors. Since losing to arch rivals Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 on Oct 2, Arsenal have managed Premier League wins over Sunderland, Stoke City and Chelsea as well as beating Bolton Wanderers in the League Cup and Marseille in the Champions League. Marseille come to England after beating Dijon 3-2 in Ligue 1 on Saturday, but although they, like Arsenal, have begun to improve domestically, it will be a major shock if they get the better of the Londoners who won 1-0 in Marseille two weeks ago when Aaron Ramsey scored a stoppage-time winner.
Arsenal also have a great record at home in the group stage of the competition, having won 20 of their last 24 group games and drawn the other four since losing to Inter Milan at their old Highbury ground in September 2003. It now seems hard to believe that Arsenal won only one of their opening four league matches and suffered an 8-2 defeat by Manchester United and a 4-3 loss at Blackburn Rovers in successive away league matches at the start of

Forward Olic wants to leave Bayern Munich Meanwhile, Olic's teammate Franck Ribery wants to see out his playing career at Bayern Munich. "It's perfect for me here," he said in an interview with daily Bild. "If my body allows it, I want to be playing at Bayern when I'm 35," added the 28-year-old, who joined Bayern in 2007 on a four-year deal which he extended last year until 2015. Ribery scored his fifth goal of the season on Saturday in Bayern's 4-0 win against Nuremberg. "This is my best period at Bayern. It's super, I'm taking great pleasure in contrast to my first two seasons," he told another paper, Munchner TZ, underlining his good relationship with manager Jupp Heynckes — in contrast to the fractious rapport he had with former coach van Gaal. Ribery has high hopes for this season, saying: "We should win the national championship and also the German Cup. As for the Champions League, I hope we can achieve that dream too." STRIKER Ivica Olic is ready to leave Bayern Munich at the end of the season after being restricted to a substitute role following his return from a long injury break. "I want to play more, I want to have fun for another two years," the 32-year-old told Munich's Tz newspaper when asked whether he would stay on. "I am not the type of player who comes on towards the end of the game. That is not enough for me." Olic, whose contract runs out next year, joined Bayern in 2009 from Hamburg SV and played a crucial role as they claimed the domestic double and reached the Champions League final the following year under then coach Louis van Gaal. He only recently returned from a two-month injury break after partially tearing a hip tendon in August in only his second game back following a nine-months injury layoff. Bundesliga top scorer Mario Gomez has been coach Jupp Heynckes' first choice in attack this season with the Croat forced to shift to his less favoured position of winger when coming on. Spurring Tottenham Bale, Parker warn London club can be even better
WINGER Gareth Bale and midf ielder S cott Parker believe Tottenham can go from strength to strength this season after beating determined Queens Park Rangers 3-1 at White Hart Lane on Sunday. Bale scored a goal in each half and Rafael van der Vaart also found the target to equal the club record of scoring in five successive Premier League games. Jay Bothroyd pulled one back for QPR in the second-half but Spurs were in commanding form and move up to fifth in the table with 19 points from nine matches. Spurs could have won by a bigger margin if not for the outstanding performance of QPR goalkeeper Paddy Kenny. Bale, 22, believes Spurs' confidence is growing. "It's just good to get goals and the three points that lifts us into the top six. It was a great team performance against QPR," he told Sky Sports. The Wales international scored his second goal, a superb strike from the edge of the box, to steady the home fans' nerves in the 72nd minute. "They were just starting to come on top and putting a bit of pressure on us and it was an important goal. The

confidence is growing. We've been playing well and concentrating on our own football. Scoring goals is part of our
game and we've been doing that," said Bale. Man-of-the-Match Parker, 31, is backing Spurs to do well this season as they continue to string good performances together. "I think they came out in the second-half and put us under a bit of pressure but overall we fully deserved the win. We played some good football," said Parker. "I'm enjoying it immensely and playing alongside players like Bale and winning games is nice as well. We can go places this year if we believe in ourselves and I'm looking
forward to the rest of the season." Spurs manager Har r y Redknapp believes he can build a team around Parker after the midfielder contributed to the win over QPR. "Parker was just amazing, I haven't seen many displays like that," he said. "You hate to mention anyone in the same breath as Dave Mackay, who was one of finest players at this club, but it was right up there with the best. "Mackay would have been proud of that performance. He won every tackle, he broke things up, his all round play
was top class. He's made a big difference." Former Spurs midfielder Mackay, 76, was a talismanic presence at the club for nine years, and part of the team that won the league and FA Cup double in 1961. Parker joined Spurs from West Ham in pre-season for about £5 million (RM25m) and made his debut against Wolves on Sept 10. He was voted Football Writers' Association Playerof-the-Year for 2010-2011, despite being relegated to the Championship with the Hammers.

Hazard wants to play out of France
LILLE'S star midfielder Eden Hazard is ready to leave the French champions for a bigger club but not to Ligue 1 rivals Paris St Germain. The 20-year-old has been linked with Chelsea, Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Inter Milan, but Lille academy director JeanMichel Vandamme said the Stamford Bridge side appear to be his most likely destination at present. Hazard signed a contract extension until the summer of 2015 earlier this year, but the Belgium international is now prepared to leave France. "I am ready to move on and make the next step in my career at a bigger club," Hazard told L'Equipe. "I wanted to stay with Lille this term because I still

had things to prove here. I now feel ready to move to a bigger club though. I am ready to make an impact at a foreign club." Recent repor ts from France suggested that Paris St Germain are ready to offer €50 million (RM215m) for Hazard, but the attacking midfielder has made it clear he will not sign for another Ligue 1 side. "Paris is magical and I'm definitely attracted to the city. It's not for now though. I don't want to join another French team and strengthen one of Lille's rivals. That would be the wrong thing to do," he said. Hazard has scored four goals and provided four assists in 12 Ligue 1 appearances this season.
United still favourites for crown, says City's Dzeko MANCHESTER CITY striker Edin Dzeko (pic) insists rivals Manchester United remain favourites in the Premier League title race. City have been made bookmakers' favourites for the title after opening up a five-point lead over the Red Devils at the top of the table. City proved their title credentials with their stunning 6-1 win at United recently, but Dzeko insists their neighbours remain the team to beat. "My dream is to win the Premier League title," said Dzeko. "After we won the FA Cup last season, this is our target. But there are still a lot of games to play. "We've played 10 games and we have five more points than United. They are still favourites for the title. We're growing up every game, but
United are United. "Nine points ahead of Chelsea after 10 games is fantastic. Nobody expected that but nothing is finished. It's not just between us and United." The Bosnian striker has so far scored nine goals in the league. Dzeko, meanwhile, claims his bust-up with manager Roberto Mancini during the Champions League defeat by Bayern Munich has been forgotten. Dzeko was unhappy at being substituted at Allianz Arena and made an apology for his angry reaction. He insists the incident is in the past and that he has no problem with Mancini. "That's behind us. I apologised afterwards and everything is finished," he said.

LIVERPOOL: FOOTBALL/ PREMIER LEAGUE
Tough enough Liverpool can cope with missing stars, says Carroll
LIVERPOOL are well equipped to cope with the loss to injury of the likes of Steven Gerrard and Jamie Callagher, striker Andy Carroll believes. The influential duo were missing on Saturday when Liverpool beat West Brom 2-0 away with Carragher (calf muscle) expected back soon while doubts surround Gerrard who is suffering from an infected ankle. Carroll, a £35 million (RM172.6m) January signing from Newcastle, is confident the squad, assembled by manager Kenny Dalglish after some significant summer spending, is well equipped to cope with such issues. “It was tough not having Stevie or Carra in the squad,” said the 22-year-old England international. “They are great players and we need them in the team once they’ve got over their niggles. “But we have fantastic players that can come in. The game (at West Brom) showed we’ve got lads who can step in when needed and do a job. “We showed what we can do. We passed it around well and deserved
the three points.” Carroll has been encouraged after scoring his second goal in three league matches at The Hawthorns, courtesy of Uruguay international Luis Suarez’s pass. “Luis is a great player who works so hard for the team and it’s nice to have him up with me,” he told the Liverpool Echo. “Luis drops off, gets the ball into his feet, can dribble with it and slip people in. “I couldn’t name a better player in the Premier League than Luis. He’s fantastic to have in the squad. He makes chances and scores goals himself so he’s a great allround player and he showed that again. “We just try to stretch defenders and try to make the pitch as big as possible. “Luis makes it easy playing alongside him. I think we played well together and hopefully that will carry on.” Carroll’s start to his Liverpool career has not been as straightforward as the club’s record signing would have liked, as fitness affected his early progress and he has yet to secure a regular place in
“We have a big squad, players come and go every week. It was a different XI at West Brom compared to the previous week and the week before that. “Everyone is fighting hard in training for a place. I’ve
been working hard every day to get my fitness up and to try to get a place in the team and I think I earned it. “We will have to see what happens next weekend. I want to get my name in the starting XI every week.” — AFP

the starting line-up this season. “I’ve been disappointed to be on the bench,” he added. “But when you are left out it just makes you work harder the next day in training to get your place back.

BIGGER AND BETTER: Van der Vaart warning for Arsenal
RAFAEL VAN DER VAART claimed that despite Arsenal’s stunning 5-3 weekend win at Chelsea, it is Tottenham rather than the Gunners who hold the balance of power in north London. Arsenal’s win at Stamford Bridge was their eighth in nine matches and it lifted them up to within three points of the top four. But van der Vaart, who helped Spurs extend their unbeaten run to seven in Sunday’s 3-1 win over QPR, said: “We are better than Arsenal. “In our last seven games, we won six and drew once. It’s a long season, but I think
we have a bigger and better squad.” Chelsea and Arsenal have dominated the London scene for the last two decades, but under Harry Redknapp, Tottenham reached the Champions League quarterfinals last term, and look set to challenge for qualification to Europe’s top club competition again this term. Sunday’s win, which came courtesy of a van der Vaart goal and a double from Gareth Bale, moved Spurs level on points with Chelsea, who are stuck in third after losing their last two games. Van der Vaart is so confi-
dent about Spurs’ strength in depth that he thinks the club could challenge the likes of Chelsea and even Manchester United for second and third place come the end of the season behind Manchester City. “Are we the best team in London? Maybe, but it’s still early,” the Holland midfielder said. “We’re in a good way. We are much better than we were last season. “Man City is the best team in the league and below them you have a lot of good teams and we are one of them.” — AFP
