Malaysia will press ahead for refugee exchange with Australia, says deputy minister

By T.K. LETCHUMY TAMBOO t.k.letchumy@mmail.com.my THE government is pressing ahead with the controversial “refugee swap” plan, which will see Malaysia taking 800 asylum-seekers in return for Australia accepting 4,000 refugees from Malaysia over a four-year period.

The Home Ministry yesterday reasoned this was because it would solve the refugee problems of both nations.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wira Abu Seman Yusop confirmed that Malaysia would still go ahead with the plan.

“Yes, we are still interested in the deal,” he told The Malay Mail when met in Parliament.

Describing the deal as a “win win” situation for both countries, he said the key aim was to prevent human trafficking.

Australian Parliament will vote tomorrow on legislation to bypass their High Court ban on sending asylum-seekers to Malaysia, with the fate of the Bill in the lower house likely to fall on West Australian National MP Tony Crook.

“So, at the moment, we are still looking into the matter because we

are also concerned about our security,” Abu Seman added.

Signed between both countries on July 25, the swap deal was for the exchange of 4,000 refugees and asylum-seekers in Malaysia for 800 in Australia over a period of four years.

The deal was aimed at checking human trafficking and other crossborder criminal activities in the long run.

Lawyers had argued that the deportations would be illegal because Malaysia does not meet the human rights standards stipulated in Australian law, as it is not a signatory to the UN Refugee Convention.

The government of Julia Gillard, the Australian Prime Minister, signed the Malaysian deal to deter human trafficking, and to fight perceptions that her government was soft on asylum seekers.

MTUC to hold picket on Nov 3 THE Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) plans to hold a nationwide picket on Nov 3 to protest against the proposed amendments to the Employment Act, passed by the Dewan Rakyat last week. Local and international human rights groups had condemned the proposed deal with the Australian government's as the "worst type of precedent".

Since the pact between both countries was signed on July 25, many have claimed it would undermine refugee protection, especially with Malaysia not being considered an ideal processing venue, and its treatment of asylum-seekers.

"If their employers refuse to pay their wages at the end of the month, who can they complain to?" he asked.

He also questioned: "What protection does a woman have from sexual abuse at the hands of her employer?"

EC rejects 500 new voter forms THE Election Commission of Malaysia (EC) has rejected almost 500 new voter registrations for not complying with a new requirement, which had been put into place without prior notice.

Several DAP MPs said they were shocked to be notified by an EC staff the registration forms had been rejected because they did not have photocopies of the applicants' identity cards.

It was also reported that UNHCR had said asylumseekers would receive better protection in Malaysia than they would if held in Australia in indefinite mandatory detention.

The Pro Bono News report, which cited The Age, stated that UNHCR regional representative Richard Towle said: "In the context of the Malaysian arrangements, the assurances of legal stay and community-based reception for all transferees can be seen as a more positive protection environment than protracted — and in some cases indefinite — detention that many face here in Australia, provided the assurances are carefully monitored".

However, the deal came under increasing criticism from international human rights groups after it was revealed that unaccompanied children who arrived by boat would not be exempt from transfer.

In August, the Australian High Court blocked their Federal Government's plan to send asylum-seekers to Malaysia as part of the refugeeswap deal, citing the proposal as "invalid".

But last week, it was reported that Gillard had called Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to reassure him that Australia remained committed to the refugee swap.

The same report by an Autralian media stated that Gillard's telephone call to Najib appeared to be part of an effort to pacify Malaysians, following a debate in Australia that drew into question Malaysia's suitability as a processing venue and its treatment of asylum-seekers.

The main purpose of the phone call was reportedly to update Najib on the implications of the court ruling and restate the government's commitment to the arrangement.

SEVERAL Pakatan Rakyat (PR) MPs do not want Parliament to sit on Oct 25, the eve of Deepavali, to allow Indian MPs to be home for their prayers.

Ipoh Barat MP M. Kula Segaran, who is the DAP national vice-chairman, said he was surprised the on-going Parliament meeting would be on until Oct 25, before adjourning the next day for Deepavali.

"Parliament sittings should not be held on the eve of Deepavali as it is a practice for Hindus to pray to their ancestors on Deepavali eve and have a once-a-year reunion with family members," he said at a Press conference at Parliament yesterday.

"To make matters worse, the traffic would be heavy and

thus it would be a hassle for those affected. Furthermore, we have to prepare Deepavali open houses on Oct 26."

'Lift moratorium first' Malaysia will consider dropping direct hiring of maids after that, says D-G

LABOUR Department director-general Datuk Sheikh Yahya Sheikh Mohamed has taken a tough stand over Malaysians directly hiring Indonesian maids despite concern being raised by the Indonesian government.

Sheikh Yahya said the Indonesian government must first lift its moratorium on sending maids to Malaysia.

“We have discussed this

Indonesia should first lift their moratorium on maids, then we will consider dropping direct hiring,” he told The Malay Mail yesterday.

Earlier yesterday, Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa told reporters his government has raised their concern with Malaysia over the direct hiring of Indonesian domestic workers.

DUMC maintains it did not break any laws THE Damansara Utama Methodist Church (DUMC) maintains it did not break any laws when hosting an appreciation dinner organised by nongovernmental organisation (NGO) Harapan Komuniti at the church's Dream Centre in Jalan 13/1 on Aug 3.

In a statement to the Press yesterday, DUMC senior pastor Daniel Ho (pic) said: "We work within the boundaries of the law and public order, in accordance with the Scripture."

He also called for places of worship to be accorded their sanctity.

"We sincerely ask that all religious communities and places of worship be t r e at e d w i t h utmost respect and not be intruded upon," he said.

In welcoming the statements made by the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, Ho also said DUMC served the community regardless of creed, race or religion.

Sultan Sharafuddin had said on Monday the Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (Jais) had acted in accordance with the laws when it conducted the raid on the DUMC Dream Centre.

The raid was conducted without a warrant, based on allegations there were attempts to proselytise Muslim guests present at the event.

"We have expressed our concern on various occasions because direct hiring is like circumventing the memorandum of understanding (MoU) both countries had signed,” he said after the 11th Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation meeting between Indonesia and

Malaysia yesterday.

In June 2009, Indonesia imposed a freeze on the supply of maids to Malaysia following cases of abuse by employers and the lack of benefits, including a minimum monthly wage and a weekly rest day.

A MoU was signed between the two governments on

May 30 this year to allow reentry of Indonesian maids but Jakarta has yet to lift its moratorium against Malaysia.

Marty also confirmed Indonesia has yet to set the timeline on lifting the moratorium.

“We are approaching the matter with caution to ensure the MoU is implemented to the letter and the spirit of it.

That is why we will not rush

into lifting the moratorium without full confidence we have all the the requirements in place," he said.

“If there is a quick lifting, we could end up with a MoU that is not implementable or respected.”

Before Indonesia’s maids ban in 2009, it was reported about 3,000 Indonesian maids were coming into Malaysia each month.

Worker injured as platform collapses

PART of a building under construction opposite KL Sentral collapsed yesterday, injuring a worker.

Brickfields police chief ACP Wan Abdul Bari Wan Abdul Khalid said the 35-year-old man fell from about four metres while working on the Nu Sentral building.

"The victim was carrying out plastering works on the first floor of the 11-storey building before the four metre-high platform gave way around 10.30am. Fortunately, he wore a hard hat and he only passed out," Wan Abdul Bari told reporters at the scene.

He said the platform was believed to have just been plastered and had not fully dried when it collapsed.

Corporation Berhad (MRCB) corporate communications senior manager, Hasnol Abdul Hadi, said: "The first-floor platform collapsed as the newly applied cement base hadn't fully dried."

He added: "All safety procedures were adhered to as the workers were well equipped

with safety gear, as required by local safety standards."

Hasnol said MRCB had bought the land in 2009 to build a seven-floor shopping complex plus a four-floor parking area that would be completed next year.

An investigation is underway by the police and MRCB.

Papers on boy's electrocution handed to A-G

THE investigation papers into the death of 11-year-old Muhammad Naquiddin Mohd Marzuki, who was electrocuted by a faulty playground lamp post in Taman Batu Tiga, Shah Alam on March 19, have been handed to the AttorneyGeneral's chambers.

Energy Commission of Malaysia chief executive officer Ahmad Fauzi Hasan told The Malay Mail yesterday the commission submitted their findings to the A-G late last month.

On Sept 19, The Malay Mail reported the commission had completed their investigations, six months after the boy's death.

At the time, Ahmad Fauzi said the contractor responsible for the shoddy maintenance work at the playground had been suspended and that the probe team found evidence indicating the contractor, hired by the Subang Jaya Municipal Council, was at fault.

However, he declined to elaborate on the contractor or type of suspension, except to say a copy of the findings would be sent to the council soon.

In the March 19 incident, Muhammad Naquiddin was playing football with friends when he slipped, fell on the wet ground and touched the lamp post which electrocuted him.

The tragedy created a public uproar following the discovery the lamp post was defective due to shoddy maintenance work and the council's inability to find the contractor’s

details in their records.

The victim’s father, Mohd Marzuki Muda, 47, had relentlessly tried seeking answers from the commission, the council and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB).

On Aug 11, Mohd Marzuki, with the assistance of The Paper That Cares, visited the commission's headquarters and met with Ahmad Fauzi who had said their report would be released soon.

Mohd Marzuki has since accepted legal assistance from Umno Youth for possible legal action against the commission, the council and TNB.

THE suspected drug dealer who fell off the seventh floor of a four-star hotel in Jalan Istana here in a bid to escape a police raid on Sunday was on police radar for a month.

Police had conducted a stakeout on him over his suspected drug dealings, as well as his possible involvement in a robbery in Klang last year.

“From our investigations, the deceased served as head of the drug-running operation while three others arrested in the raid — two local men and an Indonesian woman — served as his runners,” South Klang district police chief ACP Muhamad Mat Yusop said.

He said Sunday’s raid yielded RM79,500 worth of illicit drugs, comprising 426 Ecstasy pills, 156.7grams of syabu, 251

grams of heroin and a packet of ganja.

The heroin was found under the front passenger seat of a Proton Saga Aeroback parked at the hotel.

Cash amounting to RM3,750 and four handphones belonging to the suspects were also seized.

“Prior to the raid, the syndicate members rented two rooms at the hotel for a week and extended their stay in both rooms for another three days,” he said.

The drug dealer, 39, in attempting to evade arrest, slipped and fell to his death when escaping from the bathroom window of his hotel room on the seventh floor.

His body was found on the roof of the second floor.

When a sleep too deep proved fatal EXHAUSTED after their shift at a factory, five Nepali men slept through a fire in their flat in Section 20 yesterday morning.

Their deep slumber took a heavy toll, with one dying of burns and the others seriously injured.

The 11am incident happened at D' Era flats in Jalan Tupai S20/14, when the five were asleep after their night shift at the Panasonic factory nearby.

A neighb our who just returned home noticed smoke coming out from the unit.

Zuraidah Hamid, 42, arrived home after visiting a family member's grave in Section 21 when she saw thick smoke curling out of the unit.

"I was surprised. I immediately alerted other neighbours to help the occupants inside the unit," she told The Malay Mail.

She knocked on the door in vain.

"Together with other neigh-

bours, we broke open the door with a sledgehammer and managed to wake the men inside. By that time, the unit was engulfed in flames and the men passed out due to smoke inhalation," she said.

The occupants suffered burns but neighbours managed carry them out of the unit. Unfortunately, one of the men succumbed to his injuries shortly after that.

Section 15 Fire Station commanding officer Mohd Hissam Sidik, said the Fire and Rescue Department received a distress call at 11.18am and reached the scene five minutes later.

Two firetrucks with 19 firefighters took 15 minutes to control the fire.

The deceased was identified as Chakra Bahadur Bholum, 21, while his injured countrymen are identified as Chandra Bahadur, Siva Bahadur, Khadka Bahadur Shasta and Tibendra Rana Maghr, all aged between 21 and 27.

Highway robbers Man 'charmed' out of RM1,000 by Middle-Eastern tricksters

A MALL super visor was 'charmed' by several sweettalking Middle-Eastern men to whom he lost RM1,000.

The victim, 49, claimed he was approached by the lightfingered tricksters near a furniture shop along the Seremban-KL highway near Sungai Besi at 7.40pm last Saturday.

"I was at the car park when several Middle-Eastern men in a black Proton Gen 2 car asked for directions to the nearest moneychanger," he said.

"They said they wanted to see what the Malaysian ringgit looked like and asked me to show them a RM10 note."

The victim said he obliged and while one of the men looked at the RM10 note, another man distracted him by asking him what a RM100 note looked like.

"Both men engaged me in conversation while the one closest to me made some quick hand gestures and murmured something while looking at my wallet," said the victim.

"When the RM10 was returned to me, the men left and I slipped the note back into my wallet and that was when I realised that RM1,000 I had in the wallet for paying my car instalment was missing."

The victim, who lodged a report the same evening at the Cheras police station, said he was sure the men did not touch his wallet.

Yesterday, the victim sought the assistance of MCA Public Complaints Bureau chairman Datuk Michael Chong (pic) at the bureau offices here.

"Such sleight-of-hand tactics by con men happen frequently.

The public should be cautious when approached by strangers," said Chong.

Sales exec shocked over 'blacklist' A SALES executive who takes pride in being careful about her personal information and documentation had a rude shock when she was told she was blacklisted by banks for a criminal record.

Tan Weng Yen, 22, found this out when she tried to open her first savings account with a Maybank branch in June.

"My application was turned down and the bank officer told me I had been blacklisted for being involved in a 'black

money' scam in November 2008," she said after seeking assistance at the MCA Public Complaints Bureau yesterday.

"I never misplaced my identity card or personal documentations before. I'm surprised my identity had been misused.

"I am unable to open an account with any bank until my name is taken off the blacklist."

Tan said she lodged a police report in June but the police

had not so far contacted her.

Bureau chairman Datuk Michael Chong said he would write a letter to the police urging them to act on Tan's case as soon as possible.

"So far this year, we received 21 cases of identity card misuse involving a total loss of RM2.5 million," said Chong.

"The ICs get misused in applying for bank loans and credit cards, purchasing of property and even opening savings accounts."

Only four out of 10 families aware of what children do online

ONLY four out of 10 parents know what their children are accessing on the Internet.

Parents are also being duped into thinking their children spend an average of 11 hours a week online, whereas many are actually online for 19 hours.

These were the startling figures disclosed by the Women, Family and C ommunity Development Ministry at the Child Online Protection Seminar at a hotel here yesterday.

Its minister, Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, said the figures were derived from the Norton Online Family Report (2010), which also showed nine out of 10 children had been, at some point, exposed to negative experiences while online.

"Nowadays, children as early as four years old have the ability to do a double-click and drag movement like experts

and parents should play an important role in preventing them from being exposed to dangerous elements in the cyberworld," she said.

"We will cooperate with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the private sector to identify the main online threats and on how to

protect children from them.

"From the outcome of today's seminar, a new policy and law will be drafted to protect children in the cyberworld while accessing the Internet."

Shahrizat, who also launched a Child Online Protection book to guide families on Internet-friendly experiences,

said the ministry planned to conduct programmes with parents and Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) to give them enough information to handle such situations.

"We know parents are eager to learn more about this menace and we are ready to guide them because they must have full awareness to understand their role in monitoring their children," she said.

The seminar yesterday comprised 13 sessions with speakers from the government, NGOs and private sector, including Interpol Malaysia's National Central Bureau assistant director Supt Gan Tack Guan, CyberSecurity Malaysia chief executive officer Lt Col (Rtd) Prof Datuk Husin Jazri and Childline Malaysia representative, Au Yong Wai Leem.

The topics discussed included international cooperation to combat crimes against children, how children use technology, and managing Internet-savvy children.

Threats kids face on the net ● Cyber-bullying: When children are threatened, harassed, or targeted by other children using the Internet, mobile phone or other digital technology. ● Cyber-grooming: A process employed by child abusers to prepare a potential target for abuse by befriending and gaining the trust of a child. ● Identity theft: When someone uses your personal information accidentally disclosed or deliberately stolen, such as phone number or birth date, without your knowledge. ● Pornography: Children can be easily persuaded to pose in sexual positions with the right incentive and unknowingly become victims of child pornography.

130 per cent increase in Internet crimes

IN the first nine months of this year, 11,930 cases of cyber crimes have been reported to CyberSecurity Malaysia, marking a whopping 130 per cent increase from the same period last year.

"The sharp rise in the number of reports on cyber crimes is due to the increasing number of Internet users here and greater

public awareness of our hotline," said CyberSecurity Malaysia chief executive officer Lt Col (Rtd) Prof Datuk Husin Jazri, one of the speakers at the Child Online Protection Seminar held yesterday.

"The top cyber crimes here are fraud, spam, intrusion, malicious code, cyber harassment, vulnerabilities report, denial-

of-service attacks and contentrelated attacks."

Husin said according to the latest data up to the first quarter of this year, 61.18 per cent of Malaysia's population of 28.6 million are Internet users.

"Nowadays, out of four emails received by an Internet user on a daily average, one email is likely to be fraudulent," he said.

"Of the 11,930 cases up to September this year, fraud makes up the biggest number at 4,175 cases."

Next two highest are spam (3,452 cases) and intrusion (2,345 cases).

"Last year, there were 354 cases involving cyber harassment, and happily none were perpetuated by children," said Husin.

"Still, we are glad to be working together with the Women, Fa m i l y a n d C o m mu n i t y Development Ministry to educate parents and children to stop children being victimised by cyber criminals while surfing the Internet."

Husin urged those victimised by cyber crimes to email cyber999@cybersecurity.

Engineers to tee-off for disaster relief training

THERE is nothing like a round of golf to help out a good cause.

On Oct 22, RedR Malaysia is organising a golf tournament at the Tasik Puteri Golf and Country Club in Rawang, Selangor, to raise funds to train Malaysian volunteers for disaster-relief work overseas.

The tee-off will be at 8am and the aim is to raise over RM50,000.

"Through this event, RedR hopes to generate public interest in our activities, and network with interested organisations," said RedR treasurer

Established in January 2008, RedR's main purpose is to recruit engineers for relief services in disaster situations all over the world.

"We plan to send two to four volunteers to Australia next year, where RedR Australia will train them on two basic courses, namely, essentials of humanitarian practice (EHP) and personal security and communications (PSC)," said Nurul Fadillah.

"Eventually, we hope to gain enough skills and experience to set up our own local training programmes."

RedR Malaysia currently has 52 registered members and organised seminars in 2007 and this year to introduce their causes to the public.

Led by current president Datuk Ir Ahmad Husaini Sulaiman, they have also participated at international RedR programmes, conducted by RedR members in Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka and the United

Kingdom, since 2007.

"We are now also working to implement Training of Trainers programmes to train and register our own members for disaster-relief deployments," said Nurul Fadillah.

RedR founder Peter Guthrie came up with the idea for t h i s n o n - g ov e r n m e nt a l organisation (NGO) when he was assigned to help in the Vietnamese boat people crisis at Pulau Bidong, Malaysia, in 1980.

He realised there was a pressing need for various

engineering inputs in disaster situations, such as sanitation, water supply and infrastructure, and the necessity to start a register of engineers.

The resulting organisation, known as the Registered Engineers for Disaster Relief (RedR), can be called upon at short notice to work with frontline relief agencies.

VETERAN singer Datuk Mohd Jais Ahmad (pic), popularly known as Ahmad Jais, died at the Darul Ehsan Medical Centre in Kuala Lumpur about 9.20am yesterday, following what was believed to be lung complications. He was 75. He was buried at the Section 21 Muslim cemetery in Shah Alam. Ahmad Jais, who was popular with such songs as Selamat Hari Raya and Budi Setahun Segunung Intan — a duet with Kartina Dahari — had been admitted to the hospital two weeks ago after complaining of breathing difficulties. He is survived by five children. His wife, Mas Halilah Mas Nayeem, died on June 22, 2009.

Police hunt man who shot driver POLICE are hunting a suspect who shot a doctor's personal driver before snatching a slingbag near a clinic in Wangsa Maju, Kuala Lumpur, on Monday.

Sentul district deputy police chief Supt Othman Abu Bakar said they are trying to identify the male suspect and his accomplice, also a male. "Three witnesses have given their statements to police but the information can't help to track down the suspect. "The suspect wore a long sleeve shirt and a fully covered face crash helmet making it difficult to identify," he told Bernama. Othman said that a bullet was successfully removed from the neck of the doctor's personal driver, who is in stable condition at Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

Ex-Umno division chief cleared FORMER Kubang Kerian Umno division chief Mat Zin Awang walked out a free man yesterday after he was acquitted and discharged by the Court of Appeal in Putrajaya on a charge of cheating a company general manager of RM10,000, 11 years ago. In a majority 2-1 decision, a three-man panel led by Datuk Abdul Malik Ishak allowed Mat Zin's appeal to set aside the Gua Musang Sessions Court's 2004 decision to convict and jail him for two years for the offence.

Airline willing to compensate, but passenger plans to sue A BUSINESSMAN from China is upset with the delay in getting compensation for his damaged luggage.

LEON ZHANG, 36, claims Malaysia Airlines has mishandled his brand-new baggage while in transit.

"On the night of Aug 5, I took a flight from India to Malaysia and then another from Malaysia to Shanghai Pudong International Airport."

While in Malaysia, he says the airline company did not transfer the bag his to the Shanghai-bound aircraft.

"I eventually got my luggage on Aug 7, however, I found it to be in a poor condition."

He says the luggage has been broken open, resulting in the combination lock being completely damaged.

"There were also damages on the edges, as the rubber is broken, and also on the exter-

nal surface."

He claims he bought the luggage just before the trip.

LEON subsequently requested Malaysia Airlines to deal with the matter, but says the airline company has yet to resolve it.

ous queries for so long."

LEON says money is not a priority. "I want them to realise they have no right to waste passengers’ time.

"It is their fault my luggage is damaged, but they refused to compensate for it at first. They then told me

they would compensate me RMB100 after a few days and would then compensate another RMB300 a few days afterwards."

He says he does not hope to resolve the issue amicably and is preparing to sue the airline.

RUSSIA said yesterday it saw an "obvious anti-Russian subtext" to Ukraine's conviction and sentencing of former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko (pic) for abuse of office in relation to a 2009 gas deal she brokered with Russia.

"The gas agreements in question were drawn up in strict compliance with the laws of Russia and Ukraine and the applicable norms of

international law," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on its website.

"In relation to that, we cannot help but notice an obvious anti-Russian subtext to the entire saga."

Tymoshenko's three-month trial ended yesterday as a Ukrainian judge handed her a seven-year sentence — the maximum sought by State prosecutors — in a case widely regarded in the West as

politically orchestrated.

Moscow's reading of the case contradicted its traditional loyalties in Ukraine.

Tymoshenko was a leader of the 2004 Orange Revolution that brought pro-Western leader Viktor Yushchenko to the presidency.

Russia has struck a much softer tone towards Kiev since last year and the beginning of the term of current President Viktor Yanukovich, who is

seen as closer to Moscow.

100 crocs escape farm during Thailand floods AROUND 100 crocodiles have escaped from a farm in central Thailand, sparking new fears as the country struggles to overcome crippling floods that have left more than 250 people dead.

The crocodiles escaped when Crocodile Farm Uthai Thani was inundated with floodwater over the weekend, The Bangkok Post reported yesterday.

Thailand's Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department is now seeking to calm fears, with Thirapat Prayoonsit, the department's deputy chief, saying most of the escaped

crocodiles were young and less than one-metre-long.

"Please, do not panic," Thirapat said. "The crocodiles are not fierce like those living in the wild. On the contrary, they are rather scared of people."

Still, officials told The Post the department was recruiting specialist crocodile hunters to help catch the reptile escapees.

Government officials in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam say more than 500 people have died across the three countries during unusually heavy monsoon rains over

the past two weeks.

More than 250 of the deaths were recorded in Thailand, while more than 200, including 83 children, have died in Cambodia.

Develop people skills with WOU Having a heart for social work and wanting to “give back to society” motivated a senior tax management official to take up psychology at Wawasan Open University (WOU).

Lee Chin Chu, 52, enrolled at WOU in July 2009 and is presently in her fifth semester of her Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Psychology programme offered by the School of Foundation and Liberal Studies (SFLS).

She has been working in the tax and audit field for over 25 years, currently holding the position of associate director-cum-senior manager in an established tax consultancy firm in Ampang, Selangor. A chartered tax consultant and an associate member of the Chartered Tax Institute of Malaysia, she enjoys meeting people, doing presentations and honing her interpersonal skills.

She took up psychology to explore and delve into the human behaviour, especially since she often meets people from all walks of life in her line of work.

“I am beginning to appreciate why people behave in a certain way, and learning not to be too judgemental. I am now able to better manage my staff and relate to others,” she said.

Lee volunteers at a special children’s home in Ampang, and is hoping to be more involved in such activities in the near future, adding, “With a degree in psychology from WOU, I shall be prepared to take on bigger challenges at work and in other areas.”

Not content with just a Bachelor’s, she aspires to eventually obtain a Doctor of Psychology degree. “I believe my niche in life is to undertake social-oriented work and contribute to society. I feel a great sense of accomplishment if I am able to impact other people’s life in a positive way, to make a difference.”

But what happened to Mr Universe? | Apparently, exhibiting a chiselled body with sinewy muscles isn’t enough to score points as the new-age male vies to be seen as someone with substance, personality and talent — some qualities of a gentleman. With this, NTV 7’s The Perfect Gentleman was THE perfect opportunity for men to strut their stuff and show what

they were made of. Although it was more than a guy's beauty contest, the contestants were indeed beautiful and impeccably groomed, so much so, they oozed metrosexuality.

The winner was 31-year-old Joel Sih who won over the judges and audience as he beat five other strong contenders in the live grand finale shown on NTV 7 last Saturday.

Despite some of the judges’ harsh comments, this construction project manager from Klang took the critique as constructive feedback.

“All the contestants received honest criticisms from our mentors and judges and if you aren’t strong, it would break you. But we listened to what was said and took it as an opportunity to improve ourselves. I would like the ability to speak more eloquently,” said Sih. The first runnerup was John Lee and winner of the Most Photogenic Award, followed by

Even when they had to exude confidence, some of them looked like they were quivering at the sight of the rather intimidating judging panel comprising popular actors Debbie Goh, Mark Lee, Jiang Pei Pei, award winning fashion extraordinaire Gillian Hung and author and editor, Jane Wong.

Sih didn’t always stand tall as he became disheartened and almost gave up in the previous rounds.

“I failed to complete several challenges and that made me lose hope. There came a point when I didn’t want to continue anymore but my mentors told me to buck up and get a grip because they said that winners never give up. So I re-focused myself and picked up from there. Also, just hours before the show, we had to

At the beginning of the finale, it looked like some of the finalists were nearing a nervous breakdown as they seemed to have been thrown out in the cold to give a brief introduction about themselves to several audience members. But Sih said it was his best round.

“I’ve done self introductions many times and could feel the great energy from the crowd.

It gave my confidence a boost and that made it a great start for me to continue with the finale.”

The second round was when contestants were given 30 seconds to give their best answers to questions about the hardknocks of life followed by the third round where they had to showcase their talents. The

biggest audience reaction was given to You, as he impressed everyone with his feisty Hip Hop performance.

Sih got physical with his Kung-Fu demonstration but admitted that he wasn’t really a martial arts exponent; he learned the performance choreography in only three weeks.

In a way, it was easy for him because this fast learner was already very fit.

“I love being active with outdoor and recreational activities. I also go to the gym to do weights around three to four times a week and I look after my diet with less sugar, carbs and salt,” said the very disciplined winner.

An all-male show wouldn’t contain half the cat fights normally seen on female competitive shows, so while Sih knew who his competition was, he had a different and proactive way of dealing with it.

“I thought William and John were probably the hardest to beat. William is a very mature

guy while John appeared to be very gung-ho and competitive. I saw these qualities as their strengths and tried to adopt some of them to help me get to the top,” said Sih who’s winning strategy saw him take home cash and prizes worth up to RM80,000.

The Perfect Gentleman is a reality show and the ultimate test of personality, talent, and style as guys from all over the country sweat it out to win the coveted title of the finest man in Malaysia.

WHILE many throng gym studios for their cardio classes, running still remains one of the most popular exercises.

This no-frills, cheap and most convenient form of exercise is something that most people can do, with regard to one's age and level of fitness of course.

Running is one of the world’s most participated activity as it unites people from all walks of life for one common interest.

RUNNING IS GOOD FOR THE BODY AND SOUL When we say running, we also mean jogging. You’ll work all the major muscle groups in your body such as your gluteus maximus (the butt), quadriceps (thighs), abductors (outer thighs) and adductors (inner thighs), hamstrings (back of the thighs) and calves.

While it’s great for the lower body and gives your tush a tight squeezable look, you’ll also have to do some strength training for your upper body to balance the load.

Running is also an excellent cardiovascular workout that’ll help you shed fat and lose weight as well as burn a lot of calories (up to 800 calories an hour – that’s equivalent to one regular-sized plate of Char Kuay Teow. You often hear about “Runner’s High” and that refers to how good people feel when they run or exercise.

When the body is being exercised, it is put under some stress and that stimulates the release of the feel good hormone, endorphins that gives you a sense of elation and calm. The harder you push yourself during exercise, the more endorphins are released

to reduce stress, help alleviate depression, and clear the head for a more positive outlook. This readies you for the daily grind ahead.

POSE, AND THOU SHALT RUN FAR Aside from being reasonable fit, the secret to running far and for long distances without tiring yourself out is how you run.

The reason why the super-fit Tarahumara people from Mexico (see side bar), can out-run any wild animal is because they run with their bare feet which makes them naturally land on the front of their soles first with each step, also known as forefoot strike, or in more advanced and scientific terms: The Pose Method, developed by scientist and two time Russian Olympic coach, Dr Nicholas S. Romanov in 1997).

It’s quite simple — when we run with shoes, we naturally land on our heels first because we automatically rely on the cushioning and shock absorption of the shoes. But heel-first landing places four times your body weight on your joints and puts a lot of unnecessary strain on the knees, ankles ad shins.

You also expend more energy and tire easily.

The Pose method, however, is believed to use less energy and enables you to run faster and longer. It’s when you run with your upper body slightly tilted at a forward angle which makes you land on the front balls of your feet first (fore-foot).

So instead of using all of your own energy, you use gravity to propel your feet off the ground for the next step. This technique of running can reduce the impact on your knees by 50 per cent, says a study published in the Journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise.

Born to run GOOD EXERCISE: Running unites people If you still don’t get it, try running with your regular trainers and you’ll notice that your heels will strike the ground first. Take the shoes off, and the front balls of your feet will land first.

You’ll also feel like you can run further and longer because you’re less tired and your knees aren’t going “Ouch.. ouch” with every step. This isn’t to say that you should chuck your shoes and run barefoot because you’ll soon find you won’t have any feet left. But do choose to wear shoes that can almost mimic barefoot running.

Some parties believe the club considered the knock-out draw ahead of their match against UiTM. This was to avoid finishing fifth, which would mean they could meet league winners KL Hockey Club in the semifinals should both teams progress to that stage.

"It is just nonsensical. We have to treat every team equally in these rounds. We cannot think of the semifinals before getting past the quarters," said Rajan.

"Why would we want to think of the later rounds and pl ay a toug h te am

Rubber stamp office Sports Commissioner should be treated with more respect

DID the organisers of the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia 2011 sought the Sports Commissioner's (SC) approval to host the world class tournament?

They only thought about it late yesterday.

The tournament, featuring the likes of ace golfers Cristie Kerr, Paula Creamer and Natalie Gulbis, is set to commence tomorrow.

A quick check with the SC's Office yesterday revealed they have yet to receive any formal letter from the organisers.

Nevertheless, the paperwork was sorted out later in the evening.

"I presume there was a slipup. We have just received their letter and gave our endorsement. After all, the government has pledged their support to the tournament," was the diplomatic reply of Sports Commissioner Datuk Yassin Salleh.

Those who know Yassin since his days as the Sports Ministry secretary general will agree he is a polite but no-nonsense man.

But playing Sports Commissioner has somehow tied his tongue. The role and function of the SC's Office under the Sports Development Act 1997 is somewhat vague.

Article 36 of the Act states: "A company shall not involve itself in any sporting activity or activity related to sports…. unless it is licensed to do so by the Commissioner."

Any person guilty of such an offence can be fined up to RM5,000 or jailed for a term

not exceeding six months, as per Article 39.

Sadly, the Act is silent as to the time frame of the approval.

Companies can apply a year before the tournament or submit an hour before their event starts — as long as they receive the approval from the SC. That wasn't the case in the Energizer Night Run in April. The organisers of the marathon did not seek the approval of the SC's office as they claimed it was a "fun run".

Yet, the organisers were left off the hook with a slap on the wrist by the SC's Office.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Paralympic Council (MPC)

held their annual general meeting last Sunday. This was their first meeting after five years. Apparently, the media

was not invited. Despite waiting for two hours, I was unable to speak to anyone as I was told by three officials that "it was an internal meeting".

But during the tea break, several officials confessed no one had objected over MPC's RM4 million "investment" into an events management company Paralimpik Ventures Sdn Bhd. For the record, MPC president Datuk Zainal Abu Zarin is listed as one of the directors for Paralimpik Ventures.

T h e Ma l ay s i an A nt i Corruption Commission (MACC) and the SC's Office are well aware of the supposed investment but there has not been any updates from either bodies.

And once again the hands of the SC seem to be tied.

In all fairness, mega sports events receive the support from the government as they generate income — either

in monetary or branding of the nation. All sporting associations, meanwhile, are laden with internal bickering and politics.

But the issue here is getting associations and companies to adhere to the laws of the country for the benefit of Malaysian sports.

It is high time the powersthat-be revamp the Sports Development Act 1997 to clearly define the roles and functions of the SC's Office.

Genia compared the style of Cruden to that of injured star Dan Carter, but also suggested the late New Zealand call-up will receive plenty of traffic during the encounter.

Jenson to use current form as springboard for next season MCLAREN'S Jenson Button (pic) is eager to continue his scintillating form and use it as a springboard for next season.

His emotional victory in the Japanese Grand Prix last Sunday means he has now been on the podium in the last five races — two wins, two seconds and a third.

To underline how impressive Button has been, he has scored 101 points in that run, just seven less than two-time world champion Sebastian Vettel, who has won the other three Grand Prix.

Button, however, knows it will all be for nothing if he is unable to continue to string together the results over the last four races in Korea on Sunday, India, Abu Dhabi and Brazil.

On whether that was his belief, Button said: "Definitely, and that is why I moved to this team.

"I know you guys (the media) will say McLaren have only won a few world championships in the last 20 years, but they've been fighting for them and gone close so many times.

"Winning five races personally in the last two years is not enough, but it's pretty good.

"We just have to hope we can get it all together. As a team — me, Lewis Hamilton and the mechanics — we have really developed.

"So for me it's all moving in the right direction. But we're not going to get ahead of ourselves. When we're back at the factory we can think about next year," said the 31-year-old.

Dragon Williams aims to frustrate Frenchman Clerc

WALES' Shane Williams (pic) is not the only wing looking ahead to Saturday's semifinal against France at Eden Park knowing it may be his last chance to reach a Rugby World Cup final.

The seemingly everyouthful Williams is again expected to line up opposite wily French veteran Vincent Clerc, who has already scored six tries during Les Bleus' march to the last four.

It is the latest episode in a rivalry between these two wings, who have menaced international defences for the past decade.

"I have been impressed with Clerc from the start," s a i d t h e 3 4 - y e a r- o l d Williams. "He is a hard

worker and he scores a lot of his tries late on in games.

"That shows he works hard throughout and he is a player who goes looking for work. He comes off shoulders and is never far from the ball and that is why he scores so many tries."

Williams' two tries in this tournament have taken his tally for Wales to 56, while Clerc now has 30 for France.

Both players were on the scoresheet in the quarterfinals, Williams diving over in the corner for the first of three Wales tries in the 22-10 win over Ireland, while Clerc grabbed France's opening try in their 19-12 victory over England

last Saturday.

"Clerc took his try very well against England, but then again, he's had a good tournament," said Williams.

"He comes off his wing and goes looking for work. He's the sort of player I enjoy watching, if not playing against too much."

While 30-year-old Clerc may be the principal poacher for France, Williams knows the entire French backline is more than capable of punishing any errors.

Fullback Maxime Medard is seen as Clerc's natural heir and he crossed for France's second try at Eden Park last Saturday after linking with wing Alexis Palisson.

"I keep an eye on these players. They are ver y good players. Medard is a very good footballer, with a good footballing brain," said Williams.

"Throughout the backs, from nine to 15 and on the bench, they epitomise French flair. I have played against Aurelien Rougerie enough times, as well.

"These players are class players and that makes this match on Saturday all the more difficult."

Saturday's clash is the first time Wales have been in the last four of a World Cup since the inaugural tournament in 1987.

The Dragons lost to New Zealand in Brisbane on that occasion.

Grimandi also criticised the fans' failure to understand Arsenal's monetary issues in matching their demands to bring star quality to the Emirates.

"Our means are limited by comparison and our pay structure prevents us going crazy when we sign players.

Meanwhile, Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp believes the Gunners need a definitive goalscorer to ease their woes.

The Dutch master believes striker Robin van Persie needs some support and

also backed Wenger.

"When I look at van Persie, he is the front player, but he is better in my old role. They are missing an out-and-out goalscorer. Now they play with an extra midfielder instead," said Bergkamp.

"The midfielders are all the same sort of players. You need one who wants to get behind van Persie. I know he's (Wenger) the one who will be struggling the most. But with his experience, it'll be okay."

Bergkamp, 42, insists the team could do with the inspiration of another former Gunner in Patrick Vieira, an individual who almost returned to north London before deciding on taking a football development executive role at Manchester City.

"There was talk of Vieira going to Arsenal during the summer. I would've done everything possible to get him there," said Bergkamp.

"Just to get him in and around the dressing room. It would have brought so much to the team."

Bergkamp is now on the coaching staff at his old side Ajax and admits he would love to come back to England to do the same, but insists management is not for him.

Fit Gerrard to boost Liverpool against United

LIVERPOOL'S Fabio Aurelio admits the return to fitness of captain Steven Gerrard has given the squad a timely boost.

Gerrard is set for his first start since March 6 against c h a mp i o n s Ma n c h e s t e r United at Anfield on Saturday.

Incidentally, the Red Devils were also the team he last faced when he was in the starting line-up.

He made three substitute appearances totalling just under an hour this season

after a delayed comeback from a groin operation. But Aurelio believes this has given him more time to get ready for the clash with their bitter rivals.

"We are all delighted that Gerrard is back. He is the captain and a great player, and it is a massive help to the team to have him playing again," Aurelio told LFC Weekly.

"His availability is an added ingredient into what should be an exciting but difficult game for both teams."

Aurelio, who has yet to feature this season, is also fit again and is relishing United's visit. The Brazilian played in the 3-1 win at Anfield last March and while he is unlikely to be considered on Saturday he is looking forward to the encounter.

"After winning the derby we will go into it with a lot of confidence. It is always exciting. It's a pity that it comes just after an international break because it means you don't have as much time to

prepare because players are away with their countries but that is the same for both clubs.

"It seems like United have a new team with new players coming in during the summer. Like us, they all seem to have settled in well. They are in good form so it will be difficult but we are confident."

Manager Kenny Dalglish also welcomed the return to fitness of Gerrard as he prepares to start the midfielder against United.

Dalglish has been careful not to push Gerrard too hard during the early part of his comeback, but the midfielder has spent the international break working hard on his fitness.

"A fit Gerrard strengthens this football club, no question.

If you have him in your squad, it's going to raise the profile and standard," said Dalglish.

"We want to have a really strong squad — and him being in it makes it that much stronger."

MANCHESTER UNITED defender Patrice Evra called for defensive solidarity in creating an impenetrable backline ahead of consecutive clashes with Liverpool and Manchester City.

Despite scoring 24 goals already this season, the Red Devils have struggled to consistently maintain a clean sheet with goalkeeper David de Gea initially held accountable.

A major scare at Old Trafford saw United gift three goals to Swiss club Basel in the Champions League before Ashley Young secured a 3-3 draw, making it just one clean sheet in five games.

Evra demanded strength as United travel to Anfield this weekend, voicing disappointment over their recent Chelsea victory.

“I want us to go back to the way we were playing before the Chelsea game. We have to defend together, be very compact and not give our opponents too many chances,” he said.
