Notes to Teachers/Parents: The contents of this preschool phonics programme have been carefully written to ensure children experience success in learning to read and write. The contents of the four readers are as follows:
Reader 1: Reader 2:
the sounds of the 26 letters of the alphabet words ending with an, at, ap, am, ag, et, en, ed, eg, in, og, op, ot, ub, up and ug
Reader 3:
words with initial consonant blends cl, , pl, cr, dr, fr, pr, st; words with consonant blends st, ft, mp, sk, lt, nd, nt, lk; words with digraphs (combinations of two letters that represent one speech sound) ck, nk, ng, ch, th, sh; words with double consonants ll, ss
Reader 4:
words with long vowel sounds ee, ea, ai, ay, oa, silent e; words with the oo, or, all, ar sounds; words with diphthongs (vowel blends; two vowels, each of which contributes to the sound heard) oi, oy, ow, ou.
Children should learn and recognise the names and sounds of the 26 letters of the alphabet before they proceed to learn the sounds of the letter combinations in Readers 2 to 4. The varied and interesting activities in the activity and enrichment books provide ample opportunities for children to develop and strengthen their reading and writing skills. As a general guide in using the readers, children’s attention should be brought to the boxed letter or letter combinations (e.g. a , b , an , op , cl , fl , ee , ea , etc). Say the sound the letter or letter combination makes and get the children to repeat after you. Then point to the pictures and say out the words, emphasizing the letter sound to be learnt. Then encourage the children to talk about the pictures. For Readers 2 to 4, once the children have learnt the sound of each letter combination, get the children to repeat after you the phrases or sentences on the following page. A progress chart has been included on the inside back cover to enable the children’s progress to be monitored.

A Phonics Programme for Preschoolers Phonics provides a solid foundation for children in their quest to achieve reading proficiency. Phonics develops children’s skills in decoding words through sounding out letters and letter combinations. This preschool phonics programme is time-tested and proven to translate children’s learning endeavour into learning success! Consisting of four readers, four activity books and two sticker enrichment books, this Preschoolers’ Planet series of phonics books is guaranteed to give children the perfect head start. To enable children to learn the correct sounds of letters and letter combinations, the contents of the four readers, read by a native speaker, are available in the form of animations. Simply scan the QR code on the cover of each reader. The author, Mrs Sally Chin, who is the Director-cum-Principal of Little Steps Group of Kindergartens (Montessori Preschools) in Malaysia, has vast preschool teaching experience. Besides this phonics programme, she has penned several well-received books for preschoolers.
Simply scan the QR Code on the cover of each reader to watch the animations for learning the sounds of letters and letter combinations.
