Buddhism originated in India. The founder of Buddhism is the Buddha. He was a prince named Siddhartha Gautama which means a person who has

accomplished a goal. He was born in the district of Lumbini. He began to question about his sheltered and luxurious life in the palace. One day, he asked for permission to go out of the palace and saw four sights which

were a sick man, an old man, a dead man and a monk. These things caused him to decide to leave the palace, and he spent many years on seeking a way to end suffering. He was given the title of Buddha, which means Enlightened One.

Scripture The Tipitaka (พระไตรปิิฎก) is the Buddhist scripture which gathers the sermons and teachings of the Buddha.

Each religion is aimed at teaching people to be good persons and live by

moral principles. Buddhist doctrines also teach people to avoid all evil, do all good and purify their mind.

Buddhists usually go to a temple to listen to Buddhist doctrines or

Dhamma delivered by monks on Buddhist days which are the important

days when certain major events occurred in the Buddhist history. Other than listening to the doctrines, they make merit and offer food to monks.

Important Doctrines The Three Admonitions One of the most important doctrines given by the Buddha is the Three Admonitions (โอวาท 3) which include: 1. Not to do any evil. The doctrine relating to the first Admonition is the Five Precepts. The Five Precepts (เบญจศีีล) are the major part of the Buddhist practices that teach

people to be more self-disciplined and avoid bad actions and speaking. The Five Precepts consist of:

1. To abstain from killing. 2. To abstain from stealing. 3. To abstain from sexual misconduct. 4. To abstain from false speech. 5. To abstain from alcohols, drugs or harmful substances.

8

CHAPTER 11

2. To cultivate good. The doctrine relating to the second Admonition is the Five Ennobling Virtues.

The Five Ennobling Virtues (เบญจธรรม) are the Buddhist practices that

teach people to become good and moral persons who are physically, verbally and mentally virtuous. The Five Ennobling Virtues consist of: 1. Loving-kindness and compassion 2. Right means of livelihood 3. Sexual restraint 4. Truthfulness or sincerity 5. Mindfulness and awareness

3. To purify the mind. The ways to purify our mind include practising meditation and chanting. All Buddhists should have faith and always observe the doctrines in order to live happily.
