Celebrate Summer in

ARVADA SPLASH PAD AT RALSTON CENTRAL PARK Ralston Central Park is 20 acres that includes the large spray/splash pad, 2 playgrounds, walking paths, a sand volleyball pit, and a covered picnic pavilion that seats 100. You will also find benches, 3 walking bridges and a nice sized parking lot for easy accessibility. Follow the sounds of squealing children to the Splash Pad, where a giant flower shoots water at anyone close. If you are brave enough to stand under the filling water buckets you will definitely get cooled off. A great place for the kids, it will soon become a family favorite. Explore the neighboring playground, where you will find tree houses, slides and more. After some hard play time, cool off and recharge with snacks or a picnic lunch under the covered picnic pavilion. THE CUSSLER MUSEUM The Cussler Museum is a must-see stop while exploring Arvada on vacation. Whether a car fanatic or not, you will be delighted at the 70 exhibited custom cars, owned by Clive Cussler and displayed in rotation at the vintage style museum. The owner of more than a hundred cars, Clive rotates his automobiles; so be sure and schedule a re-visit to take in the complete collection! These cars are not just any antique cars; they have been acquired after many hours of extensive research. All of the restoration work is done at the museum by Keith Lowden, who has been performing extraordinary restoration for as long as Clive has been collecting. Keith and crew love giving back life to the cars that remind you of an era gone by. Cussler has been invited to show his cars at prestigious car shows all over the world. His more famous ones include a 1936 Duesenberg Limosine Landaulet J 577 and the 1928 Isotta Frashini Tipo 8AS Boattail Speedster, one of only two left in existence. The museum also owns and displays the 1951 Talbot Lago T.26 Grand Sport that was owned by King Farouk of Egypt. These and many other famous automobiles line the floor of the museum for you to enjoy. If you would rather read a book than look at the rare cars, Clive Cussler can deliver in that area also, as a well-known author of action and adventure books. Dirk Pitt is the fearless hero who manages escaping intense situations while driving away in a great looking one-of-a-kind antique car. Clive describes the cars he owns in his books, so by visiting the museum Cussler’s book fans can re-live Dirk Pitts’ adventures and automobiles! Cussler Museum is located in Arvada Colorado at 14949 W. 69th Ave. Their hours of operation are Mondays-Thursdays, 10:00a.m.-5:00p.m. They are open seasonally from May thru September. Admission : Adults -$10.00, Seniors (65+)-$8.00, and Children under 12-$5.00. The museum may be rented all year long and is perfect for corporate parties, wedding receptions, charity events, and birthdays parties. The PERFECT PICNIC BASKET Checklist When summer temperatures start to soar we all want to spend as much time outside as possible. What better way to enjoy the outdoors than with a picnic! Don’t unpack your basket to find you’ve forgotten some of the essentials. Do some planning ahead of time and use this checklist to ensure you’ve got it all. CASUAL FOODS, PREFERABLY SANDWICHES OR OTHER THINGS YOU CAN EAT WITHOUT UTENSILS Avoid foods with mayonnaise and try swapping typical bread sandwiches with tortilla wraps. Trade creamy salads with ones dressed in oil and vinegar. Pack everything in lightweight, resealable containers. ICE PACK OR BAGS OF ICE Food can spoil and harbor bacteria when not stored at the right temperature. Keep everything cold with refreezable ice packs, or fill a couple of resealable bags with ice cubes: They’ll chill food as it’s transported. Add ice cubes to drinks during the picnic. Empty out whatever remains before you go, for a lighter trip home. A good rule of thumb to remember when keeping leftovers: if the ice has melted around them it probably isn’t safe to keep. DRINKS Bring an assortment of kid-friendly and adult beverages, such as bottled water and juice. CONDIMENTS Some ketchups and mustards come in mini jars that are small enough to throw in your tote. (Keep the jars to refill at home for your next picnic.) SALT AND PEPPER Allow everyone to season food to their liking on the spot. CUPS AND PLATES Whether you choose eco-friendly paper, plastic, or bamboo, lightweight, stackable dishes make packing easy. UTENSILS, IF NEEDED Opt for reusable utensils. SERVING UTENSILS, IF NEEDED If you’re serving salads, you may need tongs or serving spoons. CUTTING KNIFE Look for one with a cover for safe transporting. Or wrap the blade in a kitchen towel. SMALL CUTTING BOARD It’s always handy to have a firm surface for slicing meat, cheese, and bread. CORKSCREW OR BOTTLE OPENER NAPKINS TRASH BAGS Don’t leave a mess behind. Dispose of everything you bring to the picnic site. MOIST TOWELETTES When you don’t have access to running water, these make it easy to wash up after eating. Also consider throwing a couple wet washcloths into a ziploc bag. PAPER TOWELS Keep a roll on hand for mopping up spills and wiping bowls, containers, plates, and utensils before you pack them back up. BLANKET It should be large enough to comfortably hold all your picnic-goers and food. A light one that folds small is a bonus. TOTE, BACKPACK, OR PICNIC BASKET Stow everything in a lightweight, roomy carrier. Packing drinks in a separate bag will lighten the load. SUNSCREEN WATER & FOOD FOR PETS FRISBEE OR OUTDOOR ACTIVITY

PICNIC-APPROVED RECIPES PASTA SALAD WITH ASPARAGUS & LEMON

ROAST BEEF & CHEDDAR ROLL-UPS

8 oz. (1/2 box) penne 1 lb. asparagus, cut into 1-inch pieces 1/4 cup parmesan cheese 2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil 1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice 1 tsp lemon zest salt & pepper to taste

4 oz. cream cheese, softened 2 Tbsp horseradish 4 large flour tortillas 1 head romaine lettuce 8 oz. thinly sliced roast beef 4 oz. thinly sliced cheddar cheese

Cook pasta according to package directions, adding asparagus at last 3 1/2 minutes of cooking. Drain and rinse under cool water. Transfer to a large bowl and add the rest of the ingredients, toss to coat.

Combine cream cheese and horseradish, spread onto each tortilla. Layer tortillas with lettuce, roast beef and cheddar; roll up and enjoy!

Cheers To Summer Capture the tastes of warm weather and long lazy days with this splendid summer cocktail.

W

hen Memorial weekend rolls around at the end of May, all the graduations are done, the kids are out of school and the pace has slowed down a bit - the time has come to officially kick off summer. Welcome in the hot season with a cold, refreshing cocktail mixed up especially for the occassion.

CLASSIC SUMMER MOJITOS 1/2 cup fresh mint leaves, plus sprigs for garnish / 2 limes, cut into wedges, plus more for garnish / 2 cups crushed ice, plus more for serving / 1 cup Lime-Mint Syrup, recipe follows / 1 liter white rum / 1/2 cup fresh lime juice / Club soda Muddle the mint leaves and lime wedges with 2 cups crushed ice in the bottom of a large pitcher. Add Lime-Mint Syrup, rum, lime juice, and more ice. Top off with club soda, to taste. Pour into glasses over ice and serve. Garnish each glass with a lime wedge and mint sprigs, if desired. Lime-Mint Syrup: 2 cups sugar / 2 cups water / 2 limes, zested / 1/2 cup fresh mint leaves Bring the sugar and water to a boil in a medium saucepan and cook until the sugar is completely dissolved, about 1 minute. Remove from the heat, stir in the lime zest and mint, and let sit at room temperature for 30 minutes to infuse the syrup with the flavor of lime and mint. Strain out the mint and zest and refrigerate the syrup, covered, until cold.

Fill several balloons with water. The more water you put in the balloon, the easier they are to pop, but also the heavier they are! Tie and hang them from tree branches or jungle gyms with sturdy twine or string. The kids can hit them with a stick or plastic bat, or squeeze them to cool off in a fun way!

3/4 cup cold water 1 cup Elmer’s glue liquid food coloring 1/2 cup hot water 1 tsp. borax (found in laundry aisle)

Mix 1 cup of water with 1 cup of cornstarch. Pour the mixture into cups or a muffin tin and add different food colors to each one. Gel food coloring creates nice bright colors! Grab some paint brushes, sponge brushes or even small sponges and get to painting on your driveway or sidewalk!

In a small bowl, mix together cold water, glue and food coloring. In a separate bowl mix together the hot water and borax until completely dissolved. Slowly combine the two, mixing well and pouring off any excess water.

The late President Reagan declared July National Ice Cream month. Fitting, as it is the month when most ice cream is sold, with the average American eating about five and a half gallons each year. Chocolate, strawberry and vanilla are traditional favorites, but vanilla has grown to be three times as popular as its runner-up, chocolate. While traditional recipes are made with eggs, usually in the form of custards, Philadelphia style ice cream is made with just cream, sugar and a flavoring, usually fruit. No matter your personal favorite, we have several homemade versions to tickle your tastebuds and ensure sweet summer nights enjoying a cool, creamy treat.

OLD FASHIONED ICE CREAM

You don’t cook this mixture - there are endless flavor options so let your imagination go crazy! (For a 1/2 gallon freezer) 2 C. sugar 1 Tbsp flour 2 C. heavy cream 4 eggs 1 quart whole milk 2 tsp vanilla In a large bowl add sugar, flour and eggs; cream until light and lemon colored. Add the heavy cream and vanilla and stir until blended. Add to your chilled ice cream freezer container. Add the whole milk to the “fill” line. Add the paddle and freeze according to manufacturer’s directions.

MARSHMALLOW CREME VANILLA ICE CREAM 1 8 oz. container of marshmallow creme 4 eggs 1 C. sugar 2 C. heavy cream 1 quart whole milk 2 tsp vanilla In a large bowl cream the eggs, then add the marshmallow creme; blend until smooth, add sugar and mix. Add heavy cream and vanilla, stir until blended and pour into chilled ice cream freezer. Add whole milk to the “fill” line of the container. Add the paddle and freeze according to manufacturer’s directions.

CHERRY NUT ICE CREAM 1 8 oz. container of marshmallow creme 4 eggs 1 C. sugar 2 C. heavy cream 1 quart whole milk 2 tsp vanilla 1 C. maraschino cherries, drained & chopped 1/2 C. pecans, chopped In a large bowl cream the eggs, then add the marshmallow creme; blend until smooth, add sugar and mix. Add heavy cream and vanilla. At this time you can add the cherries and the nuts; pour into chilled ice cream freezer and add whole milk to the “fill” line. Add paddle and freeze according to the manufacturer’s directions.

STRAWBERRY ICE CREAM 1 quart strawberries, hulled 2 C. heavy cream 2 C. sugar 4 eggs 1 quart whole milk 2 tsp vanilla Place berries in a food processor and puree until smooth. Pour into a bowl and set aside. In a mixer bowl blend sugar and eggs together, add cream and mix until smooth. Add strawberries and vanilla. Pour into the ice cream freezer and add whole milk to the “fill” line. Freeze according to manufacturer’s directions. If you prefer a cooked, custard-style ice cream: Prepare strawberries as above. Heat 1 1/2 cups cream in a saucepan over medium heat until it begins to bubble at the sides of the pan. In a large bowl whisk together the eggs, sugar and remaining 1/2 cup cream. Gradually add the hot mixture into the egg mixture, whisking constantly. Return the mixture to the saucepan and heat until the mixture is thick enough to coat the back of a metal spoon; about 5 minutes. Do not let this mixture boil. Strain the custard into the berry puree. Pour through a sieve, mix and refrigerate until cool. Add the cooled mixture to the ice cream freezer container and add whole milk to the “fill” line. Freeze according to manufacturer’s directions.


CUSTARD ICE CREAMS PEANUT BUTTER CUP ICE CREAM

GERMAN CHOCOLATE ICE CREAM

1/2 C. sugar 4 eggs 2 C. whole milk 1 1/2 C. peanut butter 1 1/2 C. sweetened condensed milk 1 C. half & half 2 C. whole milk 1 Tbsp + 1 tsp vanilla extract 24 miniature peanut butter cups, chopped

1 1/2 C. sugar 1/2 C. flour 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp salt 4 C. whole milk 3 eggs 1 quart half & half

In a medium bowl beat the sugar and eggs with an electric mixer until thick, about 3 minutes; set aside. Pour milk into a small saucepan and bring to a simmer over low heat. Gradually drizzle hot milk into the eggs while whisking vigorously. Pour the whole mixture into the saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly until thick enough to coat the back of a metal spoon. Do not boil. Remove from heat and whisk in peanut butter. Allow to cool slightly then whisk in the sweetened condensed milk, half & half and vanilla. Cover and refrigerate until chilled. Pour the mixture into an ice cream freezer, add whole milk to the “fill” line and freeze according to manufacturer’s directions.

8 oz. german sweet chocolate, melted 1 C. flaked, sweetened coconut 1 C. chopped pecans In a large, heavy saucepan combine the sugar, flour, cinnamon and salt. Gradually whisk in milk and eggs; stir until smooth. Cook and stir over medium-low heat until the mixture is thick enough to coat the back of a metal spoon, about 15 minutes. Stir in the remaining ingredients and refrigerate several hours or overnight. Fill the ice cream freezer 2/3 full; freeze according to manufacturer’s directions. Refrigerate remaining mixture until ready to freeze. Remove ice cream from the freezer 10 minutes before serving.

Fold in peanut butter cups when the mixture is still soft. Transfer to a container and freeze until solid.

EGGLESS ROCKY ROAD ICE CREAM 1 14 oz. can sweetened condensed milk 1/2 C. unsweetened cocoa powder 2 C. heavy cream 1 C. half & half 1 Tbsp vanilla extract 1/2 C. pecans, chopped 1 C. miniature marshmallows In a medium saucepan over low heat cook and stir condensed milk and cocoa until smooth and slightly thickened, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly. Stir in heavy cream, half & half and vanilla. Refrigerate until cold. Pour mixture into the ice cream freezer and follow manufacturer’s directions. Stir in the nuts and marshmallows halfway through the freezing process.

PEACH ICE CREAM 2 1/2 lbs fresh ripe peaches, peeled & chopped 1 C. sugar 2 C. half & half 1 14 oz. can sweetened condensed milk 2 C. heavy cream 1 quart whole milk 1 tsp vanilla Puree the peaches and sugar in a food processor; add the half & half slowly while the processor is running. In a gallon ice cream freezer mix together the peach mixture, sweetened condensed milk, heavy cream and vanilla. Stir to combine and add whole milk to the “fill” line. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for freezing.

NO-CHURN NO-CHURN MINT CHIP 2 C. heavy cream 1 14 oz. can sweetened condensed milk 1/2 tsp peppermint extract 3 drops green food coloring (optional) 1 C. chopped chocolate bar, dark or milk In a large mixing bowl, whip cream until stiff peaks form; this may take up to 10 minutes. In a second bowl mix together sweetened condensed milk, food coloring and chocolate. Pour mixture into the whipped cream and gently fold until just combined. Pour into a 3 quart container and cover tightly. Place in freezer for 6 hours or overnight before serving.

EGGLESS STRAWBERRY ICE CREAM A smaller recipe, you can still freeze it in a gallon ice cream freezer. 2 C. whole milk 2 C. heavy cream 1 C. sugar 1/4 tsp salt 2 tsp vanilla 2 C. fresh strawberries, chopped and mashed In a large bowl, combine the milk, cream, sugar, salt, vanilla and strawberries. Pour the mixture into the ice cream freezer and follow the manufacturer’s directions.

NO-CHURN CHOCOLATE 1 14 oz. can sweetened condensed milk 2/3 C. chocolate syrup 2 C. heavy cream Line a 9x5 loaf pan with foil. In a large bowl mix together sweetened condensed milk with chocolate syrup. In a separate bowl whip the cream until stiff peaks form. Fold the whipped cream into the chocolate mixture and pour all into the prepared pan. Cover tightly and freeze 6 hours or overnight.

PEANUT BUTTER BACON PUPCAKES 1 C. whole wheat flour 1 tsp baking soda 1/4 C. vegetable oil 1 C. shredded carrots 1 tsp vanilla 1/3 C. honey 1 egg cottage cheese 6 slices cooked bacon Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Whisk together flour and baking soda; add remaining ingredients except for cottage cheese and bacon. Fill muffin cups 3/4 full. Bake in preheated oven 18-20 minutes. Frost each pupcake with cottage cheese and top with crumbled bacon.

I NVEST I N A R EAL E STATE BROKER There has been much adoo in the Denver press about a real estate firm charging commissions that are a set, or flat, amount instead of charging commissions based on a percentage of the home’s selling price. To use an overused phrase…..this flap is much adoo about nothing. It is more important to carefully choose a broker based on individual circumstances than it is to minimize commissions.

BUYERS CHOOSE THEIR BROKER CAREFULLY Buyers must also be diligent in the selection of a broker. However, it is even more complicated for buyers to compare the value of their broker with the amount of commission expense because the buyers are not a part of the commission setting process. Sellers enter into an agreement

SELLERS CHOOSE THEIR BROKER CAREFULLY Hands down….the most important decision of a home seller is the selection of a broker. Sellers choosing the cheapest broker in town are likely to receive less professional service. Sellers choosing the most expensive broker in town are likely to receive more professional service.

HOMES ARE NOT COMMODITIES If all homes become uniformly valued and uniformly maintained in uniform neighborhoods, then home would become commodities without any requirement for professional real estate brokers. However, this has not, and (hopefully) will not, happen. It is for this reason that the services of brokers are required and it is for this reason that buyers and sellers should carefully analyze their investment in brokerage commissions.

Because most sellers are not experts in real estate, it makes sense for most to choose an experienced and knowledgeable broker willing to provide more professional advice and service. It follows that these types of brokers will likely charge more for their services. For the relatively few sellers with real estate expertise, it makes sense for them to choose a broker whose role is limited to coordinating the transaction. These types of broker are more like clerks and likely charge less for their services. Sellers’ individual circumstances should determine how much they pay their broker. A broker should provide more value to a seller than the amount of commission expense. In other words, broker commissions should be viewed as an investment. Before hiring a broker, sellers should thoroughly evaluate the broker prospect. This evaluation includes identifying the value provided by a broker prospect and analyzing to determine if the broker provides more value than the amount of commission paid to the broker. This is not an easy or precise analysis, but it is important to make the effort. In difficult or unusual circumstance, it could very well be that your broker is worth a 10% commission rate instead of the more common 6% commission.

SELLERS CHOOSING FLAT COMMISSIONS The most important analysis made by sellers is the comparison of brokers’ value to amount of commissions paid. The manner in which commissions are calculated is less important. However, flat commissions could be a factor in this analysis because, when more money is involved, then more broker attention is required. The sale of a $1,000,000 property demands more attention than the sale of a $100,000 property, but brokers are paid the same for each transaction if a flat brokerage commission is charged. This “attention” factor promotes a calculation of commissions based on a percentage of the purchase price.

Adding to the confusion is the fact that each property may have a different commission amount and commission split. Although some may argue that the amount of commissions paid to buyers’ brokers increase the price of a home, it is more likely that a carefully chosen buyers’ broker will bring more value to buyers than the amount of commissions.

ALL BROKERS ARE NOT THE SAME If all brokers had the same experience and the same qualifications with knowledge of the same neighborhoods, then selection of brokers would be easy and determining the value of brokers would be simple. Obviously, the idea that all brokers could be the same is absurd and reinforces the need for home sellers and buyers to compensate their broker based on the value of their professional services. Let Common Sense Prevail Some very specialized or very capable attorneys charge $1,000 per hour and other attorneys charge $100 per hour. Legal clients must evaluate to determine what level of services their legal circumstances require. Selection of real estate brokers is no different. A commission payment to a carefully selected broker is a good investment!

Look for signs of economic vitality: a mixture of young families and older couples, low unemployment and good incomes. Pay special attention to districts with good schools, even if you don’t have school-age children. When it comes time to sell, a strong school system is a major advantage in helping your home retain or gain value. Also try to get an idea about the real estate market in the area. If homes are selling close to or even above the asking price, that shows the area is desirable.

Your real estate agent should supply you with a description of each house and the lot it sets on, the property tax assessment and the asking price. Your camera and notebook are there to record other details, ranging from the cost of heating to the view out the master bedroom window.

BE FLEXIBLE If you’re able, consider doing your house hunt in the offseason; generally in the colder months of the year. You’ll have less competition and sellers may be more willing to negotiate. Be wary of choosing search criteria that is too restrictive. Perhaps you select a price range 10% above and 10% below your true range. Add a 10-mile cushion to the location you specify. If you’re a first-time buyer, pay special attention to condominiums and cooperatives, or co-ops. Condos generally sell for 15-20% less than the cost of comparable detached homes in the same neighborhood, giving you more space for your money. Don’t automatically reject a house just because it doesn’t measure up to your desires, either in features or price. You can always add a deck or update the kitchen. Since the asking price is just a starting point for negotiation, you will be making offers and counteroffers as both parties seek an acceptable price.

BASIC PRINCIPLE 1: PROTECT YOUR BACK Both people and animals prefer to sit with their backs to a wall in order to have a view of the rest of the room. When your back is protected, you feel safe enough to relax and enjoy yourself because your basic survival needs for safety and protection are being met. Feng shui translates human survival mechanisms into basic design principles that can help create an environment that’s relaxing and comfortable. Select chairs, sofas and headboards with sturdy backs that are high enough to provide a feeling of safety but not so high that they feel oppressive. Chairs and sofas with arms offer a greater feeling of protection than seating with open sides. Arrange furniture to provide a clean view of the main door to a room. This is especially important with desks and task oriented seating. When you’re seated with your back to a wall and with a clear view of the door as well as the rest of the room, this is known as the ”command position” in feng shui. This position eliminates the element of surprise. Such an arrangment allows you to feel more empowered, more relaxed, and more in control of your surroundings.

In order to have an optimal life, you must have optimal surroundings. All living things practice feng shui. Plants, animals, and people have specific requirements for their respective environments in order to thrive. An unfavorable setting may bring disease and illness, causing living things to degenerate and possibly even die. Just like plants and animals, your releationship to your surroundings is fundamental to your health and wellbeing Feng shui is often credited with creating miraculous changes in people’s lives. Many people attribute improvements in relationshiops, finances, health, and well-being to applying feng shui principles to their homes and offices. The benefits that are achieved with feng shui are not the result of magic, belief, or luck. They occur because feng shui helps people adjust factors in their environment in order to accentuate the positive and minimize the negative. When you’re happier in your surroundings, you experience greater happiness and satisfaction in your life.

BASIC PRINCIPLE 2: MINIMIZE SHARP EDGES, POINTS AND CORNERS Right angles and straight lines don’t exist in nature. Sharp points, corners and angles in our surroundings can be interpreted as threatening, and our bodies respond to the threat with tension. When sharp corners protrude into a room, the space may not feel very relaxing because our survival instrincts are on high alert to keep us safe. Soften or minimize sharp angles and pointed objects in your space by doing the following: •

Avoid plants with spiked leaves and thorns, both inside and outside your home.

Place round objects, such as sculptures, planst with soft leaves, circular tables and lamps in the corners of a room.

Position furniture with sharp edges, such as tables, desks and cabinets, diagonally in corners to make a room feel more inviting.

Frame windows with drapes to soften the edges.

Choose floral or non-geometric patterns for rugs and upholstery.

BASIC PRINCIPLE 3: ADD IMAGES & MATERIALS FROM NATURE Scientific studies have proven time and time again that plants, images, and materials from nature reduce stress, promote healing, increase productivity and provide a greater sense of well-being in humans. We are hard-wired to respond to all aspects of the natural environment: its shapes, materials, smells and colors. ”ART WASHES AWAY FROM THE SOUL THE DUST OF EVERYDAY LIFE.” -PABLO PICASSO Historically, people have been overwhelmed and terrified by the idea of buying art for a variety of reasons; they fear filling a living space with art as intimidating and unattainable. People associate the word ‘art’ with what’s in museums and have pigeonholed the whole notion as too ‘highbrow.’ Many people assume that adding fantastic, eye-catching art to their walls is a decorating splurge - not to mention that in the past ten to fifteen years, the auction houses have publicly reported astronomical figures every time they close a contemporary art auction, so a lot of people think that those are the average prices. Finally, there is the misconception that galleries are impenetrable by the average layperson or by those who aren’t wealthy. These are all myths that are simply untrue. Decorating with art does not have to be a daunting proposition; first you must figure out what you like. Take your time and look at a lot of art; go to museums, walk through galleries, visit art fairs or open houses at local universities. Note what you like when you see it: on television, in a friend’s house, on the pages of a magazine or on a website. Have a conversation with yourself about what you like and why, and what you don’t like and why. It’s all about finding artwork that challenges you, moves you or reflects your sensibilities. Buying artwork shouldn’t be about filling a certain space on a wall or about the price. When you find the right piece, it should provoke a guttural response.

TIP: HANGING YOUR ARTWORK: Most make the mistake of hanging artwork too high. Art is supposed to be at eye-level, but it shouldn’t be eye level to a guy who is 6-foot-3. When you hang artwork lower, you bring it into the room and make it much more part of the space. Living in Southern California during the 1940’s and building a hot rod out of a 1936 Ford Sedan, I fancifully developed a love of old classic cars. I bought a black 1925 Auburn limousine for $18.00 that my buddies and I drove to football games, dressing like gangsters and carrying beer and wine past the security guards hidden in a violin case. I recall finding a magnificent old 1915 Renault taxi cab in the back of a garage and begging my Dad to loan me the $80.00 for the owner who wanted to sell it. My Dad thought I was crazy and refused to loan me the money. In another instance, I tried to buy a beautiful Pierce Arrow Limousine, but the owner wanted more than I could afford and took it out to his ranch where he cut off the rear end and used the magnificent old car as a pickup truck, an occurrence that was quite common in the old days. Years later, when driving through the Colorado countryside, my wife, Barbara, said, “Look! There’s a 1946 Ford club coupe like I had in high school.” The car was sitting in the front of a farm with a For Sale sign on it. I paid $400.00 for it and drove it home, where my son and I restored it in the street. This was the first car of my collection. It still sits among the more exceptional additions that came through the years. After the Dirk Pitt books became bestsellers, I could afford to buy the more exotic examples of classic autos. I purchased a 1955 Rolls Royce that my wife liked because it was new the year we were married. Then came a 1926 Hispano Suiza cabriolet that I bought at my first classic car auction after I had three martinis. As more cars were added I had to buy a warehouse. One side holds the classics while the other displays fifties convertibles. When I was saddened by not being able to buy the beautiful Pierce Arrow and saving it from mutilation, I never dreamed that one day I would own over 100 exotic cars just like it, and saved fifty by having them restored to the condition they were in when sitting on the dealership floor. Someday they’ll be looked upon as mechanical masterworks of art and receive the admiration that is given to the Van Goghs and Rembrandts. Cheers,
