GREELEY

A YEAR IN REVIEW

The Creative Art District of Greeley, Colorado is a group of local businesses whose mission is to make their community aware of local artists and entertainment that is offered in the community. First Fridays in Greeley is one of the ways the art scene is gaining recognition. A collaborative effort by many of these creative businesses to establish a vital arts experience within the community, just under twenty businesses participate in the event. Enjoy an evening of art and socializing while taking a self guided tour through the visual displays, from 5-8 pm. For a field guide in discovering both new and established artists, great music and inspired local merchants, visit greeleydowntown.com. Cafe Panache is one of the businesses featuring local artwork; now you can enjoy a delicious crepe and a glass of wine while supporting local artists. Other businesses such as Doug’s Hang Up and Batter Up Cakes also take part in the First Friday’s art walk. Other groups working to support the local art movement in Greeley are ArtWerx Studio/Gallery and Art Space. Kim Snyder is a permanent artist at ArtWerx, displaying her paintings alongside custom painted furniture by Colleen Murphy and Jill Bailey of Flair of Art Photography. They also offer studio space for rent to interested artists looking to display their work, and welcome you to come in and look around. Art Space is a group recognized for

encouraging the expression of art. Roger and Margaret Brindisi, Joe Lee Parker, and Lisa Arata formed the first board members of Art Space. Their goal was to help Greeley become more aware of the art scene by providing artists with a space to create their work. They wanted to give the budding young artists inspiration and support, and help expand the impact of local arts and entertainment. The founding board members realize there is always room for fresh ideas and new energy, and welcomed in a new generation of board members for Art Space. Cary Poulin’s passion for the art world led her to volunteering at Art Space. She is now one of the new board members along with Corey DeVin Ramsey who is the events coordinator, Jason Ramsey and Mariah Foster. Carly, Corey and Jason were all anxious to show me around Art Space and share their aspirations for Art Space’s new chapter. It was refreshing to see their passion for their work and hear ideas for the future of a project that means so much to them. On any given day you will find one or all of the new board members working at Art Space; cleaning, painting, building or promoting. Like proud parents, they lovingly call it a “work in progress”. The group continues a tradition of passion for the arts and hope to empower, educate and inspire other artists in their community.

Santeramo’s has one of our favorite patios in Greeley for dinner. They are located on 10th Avenue and the seclusion of their outdoor seating makes you feel like you are on your own patio! The huge pine tree provides enough shade in the afternoon to keep you cool while you enjoy one of their many Italian delights!

ZOE’S 715 10th St. Zoe’s is a locally owned, nonprofit coffee house supporting local artists and musicians through their art and music venues. They have a great patio, filled with flowers and wrought iron tables that you see as you walk into their expansive coffee house. The patio is tucked back a little off the sidewalk and is shaded in the afternoon which makes it very comfortable to sit and relax. This is our patio pick for morning coffee or afternoon refreshments. Stop by and you will see why we like it!

Independence STAMPEDE Summer in Colorado brings on thoughts of hot weather, cold drinks, flip-flops, and summer festivals. But in Greeley summer brings one thought to everyone’s mind: Greeley Independence Stampede. From June 26th to July 6th people from all over the nation, and even some international spectators, head to Greeley for the unforgettable event that brings our western heritage into the spotlight once again.

Greeley Independence Stampede - June 26th-July 6th

I

n the late 1800’s neighbors gathered in Greeley to celebrate and honor the local potato farmers at a festival that later became known as the Greeley Spud Rodeo. In 1922, the newly named festival entertained around 2500 spectators with “bucking bronc riding, fancy roping, a pie eating contest, a horse race, motorcycle and bicycle races and a two-mile Model-T Ford free for all race.” This wild, western event was later named Go West with Greeley but in 1972 the community of Greeley finally found the perfect name befitting their popular rodeo festival. Still today the name has stuck and the internationally recognized event is known as

art show, old-fashioned carnival, free entertainment, longhorns, and lots of delicious food. The eleven-day event even has its own team of mascots, Bucky and Bertha the Stampede Longhorns. This year the concert series includes Three Days Grace along with country headliners like Jake Owen, Billy Currington, Martina McBride and Big & Rich with Cowboy Troy and Dallas Smith. The PRCA Pro Rodeo starts on Sunday, June 29th and continues every night through Friday, July 4th. The rodeo includes bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, team roping, steer wrestling, tiedown roping, barrel racing, mutton bustin’,

goat tying, and junior rough stock events. A yearly favorite is the July 4th parade, which has been named one of the largest Independence Day parades in the nation. Catch the parade route between 19th and 15th street along the historic 10th Avenue. Coming up on its 92nd year, the parade is sure to impress! In addition to the July 4th parade, there is a daily parade at 6:00 PM throughout the entire Greeley Stampede! The Demolition Derby on July 6th includes more than 100 drivers in a multi-heat derby. In a continued celebration of western heritage, the Greeley Stampede has hosted the Stampede Western Invitational Art Exhibit and Sale for the past 14 years. In

The Greeley Independence Stampede. The festival has grown to attract over 250,000 people each year with concerts, rodeos, a July 4th parade, demolition derby, western

and bull riding. The kids rodeo gives our littlest cowboys and cowgirls a chance to show their skills at stick pony races, mutton bustin’, barrel racing, pole bending,

that time the event has sold almost $1 million in art. Part of the proceeds help with scholarship funding for Weld County high school students.

AS WITH EVERY YEAR, THE GREELEY INDEPENDENCE STAMPEDE IS SURE TO IMPRESS THE FAITHFUL MASSES OF SPECATORS, PERFORMERS AND VOLUNTEERS. THE STAMPEDE’S MISSION EVERY YEAR IS ”TO CELEBRATE OUR NATION’S INDEPENDENCE AND PRESERVE OUR WESTERN HERITAGE.” AND TO THAT WE CAN ONLY SAY, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.
