DENVER CITY HISTORY Denver City was founded in November 1858 as a mining town during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush in western Kansas Territory. That summer, a group of gold prospectors from Lawrence, Kansas, arrived and established Montana City on the banks of the South Platte River. This was the first settlement in what was later to become the city of Denver. The site faded quickly, however, and by the summer of 1859 it was abandoned in favor of Auraria (named after the gold mining town of Auraria, Georgia), and St. Charles City. On November 22, 1858, General William Larimer, a land speculator from eastern Kansas, placed cottonwood logs to stake a claim on the bluff overlooking the confluence of the South Platte River and Cherry Creek, across the creek from the existing mining settlement of Auraria, and on the site of the existing townsite of St. Charles. Larimer named the townsite Denver City to curry favor with Kansas Territorial Governor James W. Denver. Larimer hoped that the town’s name would help make it the county seat of Arapahoe County, but unknown to him Governor Denver had already resigned from office. The location was accessible to existing trails and was across the South Platte River from the site of seasonal encampments of the Cheyenne and Arapahoe. The site of these first towns is now the site of Confluence Park in downtown Denver. Larimer, along with associates in the St. Charles City Land Company, sold parcels in the town to merchants and miners, with the intention of creating a major city that would cater to new emigrants. Denver City was a frontier town, with an economy based on servicing local miners with gambling, saloons, livestock and goods trading. In May 1859, Denver City residents donated 53 lots to the Leavenworth & Pike’s Peak Express in order to secure the region’s first overland wagon route. Offering daily service for “passengers, mail, freight, and gold,” the Express reached Denver on a trail that trimmed westward travel time from twelve days to six. In 1863, Western Union furthered Denver’s dominance of the region by choosing the city for its regional terminus. The Colorado Territory was created on February 28, 1861, Arapahoe County was formed on November 1, 1861, and Denver City was incorporated on November 7, 1861. Denver City served as the Arapahoe County Seat from 1861 until consolidation in 1902. In 1867, Denver City became the Territorial Capital. With its new-found importance, Denver City shortened its name to just Denver. On August 1, 1876, Colorado was admitted to the Union. In 1901, the Colorado General Assembly voted to split Arapahoe County into three parts: a new consolidated City and County of Denver, a new Adams County, and the remainder of the Arapahoe County to be renamed South Arapahoe County. A ruling by the Colorado Supreme Court, subsequent legislation, and a referendum delayed the creation of the City and County of Denver until November 15, 1902. Denver has hosted the Democratic National Convention twice, during the years of 1908, and again in 2008, taking the opportunity to promote the city’s status on the national, political, and socioeconomic stage In 2010, Denver adopted a comprehensive update of its zoning code. The new zoning was developed to guide development as envisioned in adopted plans such as Blueprint Denver, Transit Oriented Development Strategic Plan, Greenprint Denver, and the Strategic Transportation Plan. Denver has also been known historically as the Queen City of the Plains and the Queen City of the West, because of its important role in the agricultural industry of the high-plains region in eastern Colorado and along the foothills of the Colorado Front Range.

Convincing your elderly parents to move to a new city is difficult. You want them to move with you so you can continue to be close and help care for them, but moving to a new city seems daunting to them. Below are a few things you can share with your parents about Denver

27 Relocating with Elderly Parents

RELOCATING WITH ELDERLY PARENTS that may help convince them to give a new city a try. In 2011 Denver was ranked the #5 city in the nation for Seniors according to research conducted by Bankers Life and Casualty Company. The categories that were examined in the study are key to seniors’ quality of life. They include healthcare, economy, health and longevity, social life, environment, spiritual life, housing, transportation and crime. The categories that push Denver into the top ten in the nation are environment, health and longevity, healthcare and social life. Environment is a key component to the happiness of seniors in Denver. The 300 days of annual sunshine, mild summers and winters and beautiful mountain views are some of the main reasons seniors prefer Denver. Access to the great Colorado outdoors no doubt help Denver’s citizens, young and old alike, maintain their health. Denver’s older residents enjoy lower rates of disease and depression and a higher ranking for life expectancy according to the study. On top of that, Denver is the home to Denver Health, the hospital with the lowest mortality rate of any academic medical center in the country.

Denver’s high safety rankings add to its

attractiveness for seniors. Social life is boosted by the numerous outstanding senior living centers in the metro area. Each community offers something different, so take your time and do your research when considering which community is right for you and your family. Here are a few things to consider when making your decision: MOVINGTODENVER.CO 25

1. Location, location, location.

Does the location of the community or care center make sense for the

needs of the resident to be? Is it close to health care providers? Is it close to family? Is there a place of worship, grocery shopping, and/or outdoor walking paths nearby? Everyone has different needs, so putting together a list of things that must be nearby is a great way to start narrowing your search.

2. How much care is needed?

There is a broad array of housing options available to seniors, from staying in

their own home to specialized facilities that provide round-the-clock nursing care. The names of the different types of housing options can sometimes be confusing, as the terminology can vary. The main difference will be in the amount of care provided for activities of daily living and for medical care. When researching a housing option, make sure it covers your required level of care and that you understand exactly the facilities offered and the costs involved.

3. Safety.

Research the community and the surrounding areas for crime statistics, number of police officers per capita, etc.

Also drive around the area at different times of day and see for yourself what the neighborhood is like.

4. Availability of Transportation.

Are there non-driving transportation options nearby? Denver’s

public transportation system is one of the best in the country, so see if there are nearby light rail stations or bus stops. Access vans are available to seniors in some communities as well.

MOVING TO DENVER, Issue 1, spring2012

5. Cost – Many senior living options can be very expensive.

Be sure to eva-

luate your budget and the cost of care for each potential community.

6. Most importantly, the person who is going to be living there has to like it. Make sure that the resident to be is comfortable with their new home. If children are the primary decision makers

share with your parents all of the reasons you chose that particular community.

The following pages contain a list of retirement communities in Denver. We have listed over 55, and there are obviously many more, but this is a good starting point for your research.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE BEAUTIFUL WEATHER WITH OUTDOOR CONCERTS, SPORTS ACTIVITIES AND NEIGHBORHOOD FESTIVALS THIS SUMMER

1. Rocky Mountain National Park

Let’s face it. If you are in Colorado in the summertime you are going to be up for an outdoor adventure at some point. Can’t decide what your next outdoor escapade should be? Look no further than Rocky Mountain National Park. The park’s 415 square miles offers everything you could want for your summer escape from the concrete jungle. Hiking and walking trails, back country camping, spectacular views, wildlife, horseback rides, fishing, the list goes on and on. So pack up the car with your camping gear, turn up the radio, roll down the windows, take a deep breath, and go start enjoying the beauty of Colorado.

2. Go to a Rockies Game

No matter where the Rockies are in the baseball standings, you will always find a crowd at 20th and Blake. Enjoy the festive atmosphere from inside beautiful Coors Field or join the crowds on the rooftops of restaurants and bars surrounding the stadium. Whether you are a diehard baseball fan or are just looking for some fun in the sun, a Rockies game never disappoints. A beer, a bratwurst and a ball game can turn even the worst day into a good day.

3. Climb a 14er

Colorado has 53 mountain peaks that exceed 14,000 feet. These mountain peaks are better known as 14ers. Climbing a 14er may be one of the most strenuous yet rewarding activities for outdoor enthusiasts in Colorado. Being a good physical shape is highly recommended for anyone looking to hike a 14er, but the physical toll is rewarded by the sense of accomplishment and breathtaking views from the summit of your climb. If you are a beginner and would like to learn more about climbing a 14er there are guides available. REI stores also offer a class (highly recommended) for beginners that gives tips for preparing and climbing your first 14er.

4. Take in Pearl Street in Boulder

If “people watching” ranks as one of your favorite activities, then a trip to Boulder should be in your summer plans. Specifically a trip to Pearl Street in Boulder. With street performers abound, dozens of the top restaurants in Colorado (and the country), specialty stores, bars and much more Boulder is a favorite weekend retreat for Coloradans everywhere. If you are looking for a place to stay while visiting Boulder, check out the historic Boulderado Hotel, which is located just off of Pearl Street. The Boulderado will transport you back to the turn of the 19th century with its décor and with a classiness that is difficult to find in modern times.

MOVING TO DENVER, Issue 1, spring2012

PLANNING YOUR MOVE TO DENVER

Moving to a new home is an exciting adventure for any family. Whether you are moving across country or just across town there are a lot of plans and decisions that need to be made in order to make your move as easy and stress free as possible. One the most important things you can do when planning your move is to get started early. Make a master list of to-dos for your move several weeks in advance of your move date. This list should be added to and subtracted from as you go. Include timelines and targeted completion dates on your list. This will help ensure everything gets done and that you won’t feel overwhelmed when moving day comes. Some of the items your list may include are: getting rid of junk you don’t want to move, notifying your subscriptions of your change of address, notifying your utility companies and television service providers of the change of address, finding boxes and packing supplies for your move, finding a reputable moving company, and lining up friends to help pack and move.

Getting rid of your junk

Everyone accumulates things during the duration of their stay at their current homes, much of which has gotten little or no use. Identifying these items that you do not use or likely will not use can be very helpful. These items can be donated to places like the Goodwill or Salvation Army, or you can hold a garage sale to help clear out some of these items. The more things that you can get rid of, the less you will have to move and find places for in your new home. This project is best started several weeks or even months before you move so you know exactly what you will actually be moving.

Budget your Move

Moving expenses can add up quickly, so be sure to do your research on moving costs and set a budget based on your moving needs. It is very easy to get carried away with spending during a move, so a carefully planned budget can help keep things under control.

Identifying your packing needs

advertising

Once you have gotten rid of, or identified what you will be getting rid of before your move, you can start calculating what you will need in the way of boxes and packing supplies. Whatever amount of boxes you decide will be needed for your move, increase that amount by 20%. You will always need more boxes than you think. You can purchase boxes and supplies from moving companies or order them online from specialty moving stores, but you can also save some money by asking your local grocery stores, hardware and appliance stores, or liquor stores if you can have some boxes from them. They receive shipments throughout the week and typically just breakdown boxes and recycle them, so they usually don’t have a problem with you taking some boxes off their hands.

Changing your address

If you have magazine or other mail subscriptions you will need to notify the publisher of your change of address. You will want to do this as much as a month before your move to avoid an interruption in delivery. It often takes magazines several weeks to process your change of address form. You will also want to notify your television service provider of your move and move date. If they provide services in the area you are moving to they will often transfer your services free of charge to your new address. You will also need to fill out a change of address form with the post office so that your mail will be forwarded to your new address. This is a simple process that can be done online or at your local post office, so you shouldn’t have to do this until a few days before your move.

Inventory your home

Do a room by room inventory of your current home and list out everything that you will be taking with you. This is helpful on a couple of levels. First, it will be helpful for insurance purposes if anything should happen to your belongings during your move. Second it will help you when you are unpacking to ensure that all of your possessions are accounted for. Taking pictures of each room in your current home will also help with the inventory process and help you to remember how things were set up and decorated in case you need a refresher when arranging your new home.

Plan your physical move

advertising

One of the toughest choices for anyone moving is deciding whether to take on the task of moving their things from one home to another themselves or to hire professional movers. There are many factors to consider when making this decision including cost, distance, how much you are moving, how much help you will have, and whether you are comfortable driving a moving truck. If it is within your budget to do so, hiring a professional moving company can make the process much less stressful and less physically taxing. Depending on the distance you are moving and how much you are moving, a professional mover may actually be more cost effective than doing everything yourself.

MOVING TO DENVER, Issue 1, spring2012

Hiring Professional Movers

If it is your decision to hire professional movers then it is important to do your research on potential companies. Be sure to get quotes from several dierent companies and do not be shy about the fact that you are shopping around because it may help get you a lower quote. Also do your research on the candidates before choosing. Look for online reviews or check with the BBB to ensure you are getting the best mover for you and your family. Take the process of hiring a mover seriously, after all you are entrusting them with your possessions during the move.

Getting friends onboard to help with the move

If you decide that a professional moving company is not necessary it may still be important to get the help of friends or family on your moving day. If you do enlist the help of friends be sure to have a task for them when they arrive. They want the move to go as quickly as possible and being organized upon their arrival will definitely help expedite the process. You may also want to thank your friends that helped you move with a meal or party at your new place after the move. Taking care of your help is always a good idea, after all you never know when you will need their help again. These are just a few things to think about when planning your move. There will obviously many more things that may come

Remember, the more organized you are when planning your move, the easier it will be and the sooner you can relax and begin enjoying your new home.

up and will need to be planned for, but hopefully the above will get you started.
