Salvaging scrap metal pays the bills, but creating sculpture from that junk is what makes John Scott happy. Most of John’s small sculptures are extremely detailed, whether it’s a Harley Davidson motocycle, hand gun or an oil pumper unit. With patience, imagination and an arc welder, he creates metal art from bits and pieces of scrap metal from the Russell County area. A ”drifter” was talking with him at a bar about making something from the junk John had collected. Scott worked with the drifter for about a month and then the man moved on. He was hooked on welding unrelated pieces of metal and prefers to sort through his junk to find just the right look rather than to manufacture a piece.

FOSTERING KANSAS FOLK ART
Local art lovers come together as the Lucas Arts and Humanities Council, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving Kansas art environments and folk art of the region. Lucas, Kansas is home to the Lucas Arts and Humanities Council, Inc., also known as the Grassroots Art Center. Their mission is to educate, exhibit, document and preserve the grassroots, self-taught, visionary art environments found in Kansas and the Midwest; and to exhibit and foster folk art of the region. MAKING A STATEMENT Sometimes grassroots artists work outside the academic structure of fine art and beyond the cultural traditions of folk art. Often driven by a vision, they work for many years creating an environment which is meant to be viewed as a whole. These environments are difficult to reserve and often deteriorate or are dismantled when the artist dies. Grassroots artists make a statement. No rules intimidate them, no one tells them how it should be done, they create in a particularly uninhibited way. As far as they are concerned, there is nothing special one needs to know before picking up a saw, welding torch, whittling knife or masonry tools. Working primarily to please

themselves, they may have little concern that their work will find an audience or that others value what they have made. T
he Volland Store today is not the general store it was in 1913 when it opened as Kratzer Brothers Mercantile. Filled with every kind of merchandise, the Store quickly became more than just a store. It became the social and cultural center of Volland and the surrounding community. The Volland Store was a centerpiece of the community until the early 1970s when it closed after the death of its storekeeper, Otto Kratzer. But the memories remain strong, and the building is still known as The Volland Store. The renovation has saved as much of the Kratzer brothers’ original structure as possible, and
present-day “storekeepers” hope that the Store can reclaim its role as a center of community life where news and ideas are exchanged, and a place where descendants of homesteaders and visitors from Anywhere, USA, can stage meetings, reunions, workshops and weddings, art exhibits, musical performances, equestrian events, and hoe-downs. Located at 24098 Volland Road, 8 miles southwest of Alma, or visit them at thevollandstore.com. Open 12-5, Saturday and Sunday, or by appointment. View a list of upcoming exhibits on page 22. >

The Volland Store
Justin Marable’s surreal rural landscapes are a true labor of love. The process of serigraphy, or silk screening, is a very labor and time intensive process. A typical piece takes around 3 weeks from start to finish.
SEPTEMBER 11 - OCTOBER 16, 2016 Susan White: Landscape/Skyscape Meditations In Thorn Works and Burn Drawings Working with thorns from the honey locust tree, Susan creates wall installations and discrete sculptures that she regards as three-dimensional drawings.
OCTOBER 22 - 30, 2016 Time Machines: A Vintage Motorcycle Exhibit NOVEMBER 5 - NOVEMBER 13 Otto Kratzer Returns to Volland / 2016 Photography and film of Otto Kratzer, original owner of The Volland Store, documenting daily life in a small rural Kansas town in the early years of the 20th century.
The first step in the process is acquiring the image. Either a photograph or drawing by Justin is printed onto a sheet of clear film, ending up with a large positive of the image. This positive image is then placed inside an exposure unit, which is used to transfer the image onto a silkscreen coated with a light sensitive photo emulsion. Paper stencils are created by hand cutting every
detail with an xacto knife. Then begins the physical process of printing. The skies are always printed first using a monoprint technique, using paintbrushes and spatulas to paint, dab, and scrape the vivid colors on the screen to be printed. Each sky varies, sometimes slightly and sometimes drastically. A squeegee tool is used to push the ink through the open areas of the stenciled screen. Each run requires a lot of prep and clean up work, including the use of a powerwasher to clean the screen. The final step is printing the photographic image over the stenciled sky and blocks of color.

d e a n k u b e I view the work I create
as collaborative self-reflection. By channeling and capturing the experiential humanness of the people and places that have impacted my life – those honest, raw, uncertain, and intimately vulnerable moments – I discover more about myself and am able to connect with others on emotional level that I could never convey with words alone. While it is not always clear in my mind as to what I am doing and feeling in the moment, it is the process of working through the unknown that keeps me excited about what each painting will ultimately become. I am not trying to be overly intellectual or prescriptive in what I want someone to feel when they see the work, rather, my aim is to invite people to bring their own life experiences, histories, and unique stories into the narrative. The real beauty in what I do comes from each individual interpretation that develops within the minds of those experiencing what I create. I am inspired by the uncertainty of life. The mistakes. The bumps. The blemishes. I paint with acrylic on birch, purposely working with tools that feel unfamiliar – from traditional paintbrushes to printmaking rollers to spray bottles to miscellaneous card stock shapes – which allow for mishaps and missteps to naturally occur, taking my original ideas to places I never would have envisioned. It is in this experimentation that I find the work truly begins to reveal itself. I feel that it is my responsibility to embrace the struggle that working with paint presents – the process often representing the struggles people face everyday – in a way that engages the viewer with immediacy, energy, and an understanding that they will read their own meaning into each painting. Regardless of what I am painting or why I was inspired to create a particular piece, I remain driven by the infinitely colorful interpretations of my work that are articulated to me by those who are willing enough to tell me how a piece speaks to them. This, in turn, allows me to view my own work from a completely different perspective – sparking entirely new thoughts and ideas, and igniting my creative process all over again. I transfer the immediacy of thought and composition from my sketchbook drawings to canvas and make modifications as I move from a private scale to an accessible format and slower medium. The accumulated marks, shapes, and colors form an autobiographical iconography referencing nature, passage of time, and gesture of the hand. My paintings and drawings, both representational and abstract, express an inner tension. Through them I relay personal conversations about common experiences such as loss, growth, grief, and hope. The titles I choose, poetic or descriptive, reflect part of the process in that dialogue and hint at the underlying story. j o s h u a holland As one born and raised in New York City,
I have and always will love that great city. My journey though life however took me to the Midwest, a region I was not familiar with when I moved to Minneapolis in 1989. A year or so after moving I took a road trip through South Dakota, and for the first time, witnessed a wide open, completely treeless landscape. It blew my mind. Most of the locals, although they could appreciate their surroundings, did not understand why I was so amazed. But coming from the claustrophobically dense environment of NYC, it felt like the first time I could really decompress, and truly breath. Since then I have travelled across most Midwestern states via car and motorcycle. After moving to Kansas in 2007, I began exploring the state, and found yet more interesting landscapes and scenes, from the rolling prairie of the Flint Hills and Western Kansas, to the farms and small town structures and people sprinkled throughout. Although you won’t see the dramatic peaks of the Rocky Mountains or the sweeping seaside cliffs of the Pacific Northwest, there is a stark and unique beauty to Kansas that you will not witness elsewhere. It was around this time that my interest in photography was rekindled, and I found no shortage of subject matter not only in the state of Kansas, but within the local vicinity of Lawrence, which is where I now call home.

michael strickland was born in the Great Plains of Western Kansas,
where the wide open landscape inspired him to pick up the camera late in his teens. Art always played a large part of Michael’s life. He graduated high school from Interlochen Arts Academy and studied jazz in New York City before settling down and getting his degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Kansas. Being a mechanical engineer by trade, the technical aspect of digital photography came second nature to Michael and soon he desired more. A few years into his career as a landscape photographer, he fully immersed himself into the analog world. He now exclusively works with an 8x10 large format camera, a medium format 6x7 and 6x17 panoramic camera. Michael’s colorful, limited edition landscape photographs have been collected by individuals worldwide and has work hanging in the offices of some of the nation’s most prestigious art collectors. He prides himself on controlling the outcome of his work from concept to delivery. His work on 8x10 film has allowed him to create finely detailed images that resolve finer than any digital system to this day. The meticulous process of large format produces a well-planned, carefully crafted image that can take years to perfect. Michael now resides in his home state of Kansas, where he has the incredible opportunity to photograph the beautiful prairie of the Great Plains on a daily basis. He enjoys photographing and exploring areas close to his home to study the light carefully and understand the landscape on more of an intimate level. Though he enjoys travelling to exotic locations with camera in tow, Michael is always finding his way home to explore the places he knows and loves. Whether he’s on the cliffs of Big Sur, in the backcountry of Yosemite, or on the plains of western Kansas, Michael will always love the landscape he calls his home. Michael works with a Linhof Technorama 617 SIII, a Mamiya 7II, and an Arca Swiss F-Line 8x10 and exclusively works with Fujifilm and Kodak color films and Ilford black and white films. j u s t i n m a r a b l e I was raised in Robinson
, a northeastern Kansas farm town. Throughout my life, I have learned and wandered within the boundaries of my Midwestern homeland, observing the social and physical landscape of the surrounding region. It’s here where connections have converged to create a clear perspective of beauty in the familiar and contentment in the surroundings of place. In this middle ground, I find inspiration in geography and history of the Midwest. Social and environmental issues drive much of my work as well as influences from family, nature, and everyday life. Over time, I’ve discovered my work resonates with a diverse audience and seems to connect with many on some basic level. The imagery within my work comes from a very honest place. I was born and raised in the Midwest, a place where I’ve continuously deepened my roots and reflected on rural memories. My hope is to provide an ongoing stream of original art that flows from roots of urban and rural Kansas to the surrounding local and global community. I currently reside in Lawrence with my wife and daughters. I create from my East Lawrence studio and work at my home as a husband and father. In Kansas I’ve settled, grown my roots, and created a life grounded in art, family, and community. HOMEMADE DONUTS The best part of making these homemade Spudnuts is eating them while they are still hot. Light and flaky, with a sweet glaze, the effort and care that go into making these pillows of dough-heaven is well worth that first bite... and 100th bite. 2 Cups instant mashed potatoes 2 packages yeast 1/2 Cup hot water 1 1/2 Cups warm milk (112 degrees) 1/2 Cup vegetable oil 1/2 Cup sugar 2 eggs 1 teaspoon salt 7 1/2 Cups flour oil (for frying) recommended: butter flavored shortening 1/3 Cup water 4 Cups powdered sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla Prepare instant mashed potatoes as instructed for 2 Cups and set aside. In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in 1/2 cup hot water, let mixture sit for 10 minutes. To the yeast, add mashed potatoes, milk,
oil, sugar, eggs and salt. Knead in just enough flour to create a very soft, wet dough. Set the dough aside to rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size. Punch down, let rise again until doubled, about 25 minutes. Take part of the dough and roll out on a heavily floured surface, to 1/2 inch thick. Cut with a floured cutter, (we use a wide mouth mason jar) and set aside on a heavily floured surface. Remove the center hole with a cap (try the vanilla extract cap.) Save the donut holes for frying or knead them back into the remaining dough. Continue cutting donuts with the remainder of the dough. Cover the donuts with a clean towel and allow to rise an additional 25 minutes. Once donuts have risen, heat the oil or shortening to 375 degrees in an electric skillet. Fry the donuts a few at a time, for
2-3 minutes each, or until golden brown. Transfer to a cooling rack. From here, submerge donuts in the warm saucepan of glaze; remove and arrange on an additional cooling rack to allow excess glaze to drip onto parchment paper. (This excess may be collected and re-heated.) Eat and enjoy immediately or freeze them in small batches. Tips: If you are freezing the majority of your donuts, consider storing the donuts without glazing. Reheat frozen donuts in a 350 degree oven for 5-7 minutes. Make a glaze and dip the heated donuts; allow to drip. Recruit friends and family - it works best with one to hand dough to the fryer, one to fry and one to glaze.
