GARDEN OF EDEN

World famous outsider art environment Garden of Eden has been an attraction since 1907, built by Civil War Veteran S.P. Dinsmoor. Samuel Perry Dinsmoor started building the Garden of Eden and Cabin Home in 1905, at the age of 64. His sculptures are as interesting as his biography, with each and every element having a story to tell. Some of his 150 concrete sculptures tower three stories high and shows the pioneering spirit of this town that embraces art by everyday people. The Garden of Eden is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and also consists of a stone log cabin home and a mausoleum where Mr. Dinsmoor and his first wife are buried. 305 East 2nd Street, 785-525-6395; garden-of-eden-lucas-kansas.com

The Grassroots Art Center opened in 1995 after three abandoned 1897 downtown native limestone buildings were renovated to exhibit fascinating grassroots, self-taught, visionary art environments. Permanent exhibits include Kansas artist’s Inez Marshall’s brightly painted limestone sculptures and Ed Root’s concrete, colored glass and rock embedded sculptures. You’ll see Herman Divers’ life-sized motorcycle and car made so sturdily from pull-tabs that you could sit on it! In addition the art center represents over 22 Kansas and Midwest selftaught artists in an endless flow of tickle-yourfancy recycled mediums such as barbed wire, bones, and chewing gum to share with the public. Outside, the Post Rock Courtyard displays elements of distinctive North Central Kansas post-rock architecture and its artistry. 213 South Main, 785-525-6118; grassrootsart.net
