“I know you sell and install garage doors big and small. But what if my garage door needs fixing, or the windows on my garage need to be replaced or resealed?

Do you do that?” I asked.

“Oh, for sure!” John said, “And we can fix, seal, or replace all household windows too.”

“Even if you didn’t install them?” I asked.

John said, “You bet! And if you’ve purchased your own doors or windows and want them installed, we’ll do that for you too.”

John and Gredel Enns bought Winkler Overhead Doors at the end of 2014 from Bill Hildebrand who had started the company in 1977. John explains, “somebody whispered in my ear that Bill was looking to sell. He’d been winding things down.”

It was on the foundation of the Winkler Overhead Doors name that John built the business back up to what it is today. Winkler Overhead Doors now has customers across Manitoba, into eastern Saskatchewan and western Ontario.

After being on his own for the first years, he now runs the operation with two full-time employees. John says, “I plan on hiring another service technician with the new products we’re offering.”

John is excited to become a dealer

for residential All Weather Windows/ Doors, a Canadian company. Winkler Overhead Doors is only one of a few retailers carrying these products in Southern Manitoba. “This way,” John says, “we can get more into the residential side of things. Right now, 50% of our customers are small businesses, farms, and individuals, and the other 50% are contractors.”

Manitoba. John says, “I’ve seen how they’re made. No one makes as good quality as them. Quality products is one of the things I knew I wanted to provide in my business.”

One of John’s business mentors told him early on that “there are three things that make a business: quality, pricing, and service. But the catch is that you can’t provide all three. You can only choose two.” For John, it was a “no brainer.” He knew that offering good quality products that would last the test of time was worth

more than having the lowest prices around, that, and customer service.

“Another thing I value is a satisfied customer. Keeping customers happy is the most important goal,” John says. He enjoys getting to know all his customers and handles the customer service himself.

“What is also important to me is honesty,” he said. “Early on, I got a job to repair a local business’s overhead door. After trying to install a spring, I discovered that it was the wrong one. The owner was just then

but to keep a good conscious, I couldn’t do that. I told the owner that the mistake had been my own, not the parts company. I believe that because I was honest, that owner continued to hire me for more jobs.”

Honesty arises from a deeply rooted faith that he carried with him from Mexico. “My wife, Gredel, and I had been tossing it back and forth if we should move to Canada. At that time, I was farming, just renting my dad’s land. One day, while combining, I heard God’s voice, clear as day, tell me that we should move.” This decision was confirmed when his dad’s well dried up. John said, “When they couldn’t find another well, my dad sold the land to the neighbour who had a working well.” That was in

He stayed on with Berdick while he built up Winkler Overhead Doors. “First, I was located at our place in Reinfeld. By 2016, I was in business full-time and bought a shop on Roblin Blvd.,” John says. Continued growth led him to sell that property in 2020 to move to their newly built shop at their current location, 835 Monticello Way.

John said that he couldn’t have accomplished all this on his own. “I really appreciate those men I go to for advice. The ones with the grey hairs,” he smiles. “They’re a couple of local retired businessmen and my dad back in Mexico. What I appreciate is
