Saundersfoot Once a thriving industrial port, exporting coal from the rich anthracite veins of its hinterland, the village of Saundersfoot is now one of Pembrokeshire’s most popular holiday destinations. And visitors can be assured that they will be warmly welcomed throughout the year especially to Saundersfoot’s two lively food and craft festivals on the harbour side. The St Nicholas Christmas Market offers festive treats, while the event to celebrate St David’s Day features the famous Cawl Cooking Championships of the World…and Elsewhere, and sees hundreds of people sampling the tasty Welsh delicacy at local eating establishments. Saundersfoot celebrates New Year in style, with a huge firework display at midnight, followed hours later by the annual ’New Year’s Day charity swim. Over 1,000 fancy-dressed dippers and huge crowds of onlookers enjoy the event, and the party goes on in the village centre throughout the day. By contrast, treat yourself to some peaceful pampering in the five-star St Bride’s Spa Hotel overlooking Carmarthen Bay; take advantage of a low tide and stroll along the sands to Monkstone Point or follow the former miners’ railway route through the tunnels to Coppet Hall and Wisemans Bridge, with its beachside pub.

Tenby has a multi-faceted charm in its proud role as the jewel in the Pembrokeshire crown. The appeal of this former fort and port extends through every season, and its attractions welcome every age group. One of the historic town’s most famous sons, artist Augustus John, described Tenby as ‘so restful, so colourful and so unspoilt’. And if Augustus was alive today, he could well be adding ‘so crazy’ after viewing Tenby’s famous Boxing Day swim, with its hundreds of barmy bathers taking a chilly plunge off the North Beach! The charity event, ranked as one of Britain’s top festive highlights, is one reason why Tenby is a popular place for a Christmas break. Away from the resort’s busy summer days; spring and autumn breaks spell out time to pause and admire the special quality of light enhancing the colours of the harbour side houses and the chance to take a peaceful stroll through the historic Five Arches and the narrow streets, or up Castle Hill to the unique little museum and art gallery. Or maybe bring your four-legged friend along to enjoy the beaches - between October and May is doggy heaven on the sands, with no worries about restrictions (as long as you remember to pick up whatever he leaves behind…) Nearby Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo - voted Best Family Day Out in Wales - is open on winter weekends, while Anna Ryder Richardson’s Manor House Wildlife Park is open between Christmas and new year for a special winter treat.
Ossie Morgan’s restaurant overlooks Tenby’s historic fishing harbour & North Beach and offers unrivalled panoramic views over Carmarthen bay. We serve a fusion of Welsh and international cuisine, catering for all tastes. We offer a superb range of dishes all of which are homemade and locally sourced by our award-winning chefs. Ossie Morgan’s delivers a high level of customer service and is dedicated to fulfilling customer requirements no matter how big or small. Open to non-residents all year round serving both lunch and evening meals.

Pembroke, Pembroke Dock area Rich in history and warm in welcome at any time of the year, the towns of Pembroke and Pembroke Dock stand just a mile apart and offer their own special experiences to visitors. Pembroke boasts one of the finest Norman castles in the country - the birthplace of King Henry VII - and the town’s merchants built the fine Georgian houses that line the bustling Main Street. Just a few steps away is the wildlife haven of the Mill Pond, with its majestic flock of swans and busy waterbirds. Pembroke Dock, approaching the 200th birthday of its founding in 1814, is relatively young compared to its neighbour. Standing alongside the magnificent Milford Haven waterway, the town developed around the former Royal Naval Dockyard and there is plenty to interest followers of maritime history, including the Sunderland Flying Boat Centre and the magnificent Garrison Chapel - the only surviving classical Georgian building of its kind in Wales. The stunning coastal scenery of the Castlemartin peninsula is close by, and there can be no better way to round off an afternoon on the blustery cliffs with an traditional tea at Bosherston’s cosy olde worlde café. 14

As voted for by National Geographic Magazine travel experts, Pembrokeshire’s accolade as one of world’s top coastal locations means it’s a truly spectacular place at any time of year. It’s home to the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, which curls around the edges of the county as well as stretching along the Daugleddau estuary and the Gwaun Valley. If you’re looking to blow away the cobwebs this winter, wrap up warm and take a stroll on one of over 50 beautiful beaches or take in a stretch of the 186-mile long Coast Path National Trail, officially the county’s best day out! You can also choose from over 200 walks in the Park, including easy access walks, featured on the Park Authority’s website at www. pembrokeshirecoast.org.uk.
If you’re keen to travel back in time why not take a trip to Carew Castle or Castell Henllys Iron Age fort, both sites managed by the National Park Authority. There’s a host of autumn and winter activities for everyone to enjoy. Or discover your inner ‘culture vulture’ and visit Oriel y Parc Gallery and Visitor Centre in St Davids owned by the Park Authority and operated in partnership with National Museum Wales, showcasing world-class artwork all year round from the national collection. Pilgrims have been making tracks to St Davids since medieval times, and 21st century could do worse than to follow in their footsteps and marvel at the outstanding cathedral, not forgetting to cast your eyes heaven-wards to gaze at the magnificent ceilings. An atmospheric carol concert in the cathedral is the stuff of which memories are made, and also pretty unforgettable are some of the eating out experiences offered in the little city.
