the navaL FLank oF From imPeriaL the weStern Front SPLendour to internment Mark Karau NEW this new book tells the story of the creation, purpose, operations and career of the marinekorps Flandern. the Flanders harbours should have allowed the german navy to strike dangerous blows at vital British traffic in the Channel and southern north Sea but the marinekorps was unable to fulfill the great expectations of von tirpitz. the author not only explains how the german conducted operations, but also explains how the opportunites presented by the Flemish occupation were wasted away. a significant and insightful book on an important theatre of the war.

Fighting the great war at Sea
Nicolas Wolz
Marcus Faulkner
this important new work describes how the imperial german navy, which had expanded to become one of the great maritime forces in the world, second only to the royal navy, proved, with the exception of its submarines, to be largely ineffective throughout the years of conflict. this is a fascinating and perceptive analysis of a whole era, and it contributes substantially to our understanding of the war and its consequences – consequences, sadly, that helped pave the way for the third reich.
with more than 125 beautifully designed maps and charts, the atlas sets out to visualise the great sea battles as well as the smaller operations, convoys, skirmishes and sinkings. no other work has attempted such an ambitious coverage of the naval war in this period and it will become the definitive reference work for enthusiasts and historians as well as general readers fascinated by the naval war that extended across all the world’s oceans and had such a significant impact on the outcome of the war. a major new work.
this radical new book concentrates on the way in which each side tried to use or deny the sea to the other, and in so doing it describes rapid wartime changes not only in ship and weapon technology but also in the way naval warfare was envisaged and fought. Combat produced many surprises: some, like the impact of the mine and torpedo, are familiar, but this book also brings to light many previously unexplored subjects, like creative new tactical practices and improved command and control.

SeaForth worLd navaL review 2015

Edited by Conrad Waters
this book is one of a series that takes a selection of the best models to tell the story of specific ship types – in this case, the various classes of warship that fought in the First world war, from dreadnoughts to coastal motor boats. it reproduces a large number of model photos, all in full colour, and including many close-up and detail views. these are captioned in depth, but many are also annotated to focus attention on interesting or unusual features. although pictorial in emphasis, the book weaves the pictures into an authoritative text, producing an unusual and attractive form of technical history.
Launched in 2009, this annual has rapidly established a reputation as an authoritative but affordable summary of all that has happened in the naval world in the previous twelve months. it combines the standing features of regional surveys with one-off major articles on noteworthy new ships and other important developments. this year’s edition covers the French, Bangladesh and myanmar navies, and focusses on the Montford Point class mobile landing platforms and the Skjold class fast attach craft.

employing superb, clear draughtsmanship this book illustrates each and every detail of the rigging of typical period foreand-aft vessels.the rigging of period ship models is arguably the most complex task that any modeller has to accomplish; the intricacies can be daunting and visual references limited. the author’s first book, Rigging Period Ship Models, was a triumph of clarity for those needing to decipher the complexities of square rig; this does the same for fore-and-aft.

For more special offers visit www.pen-and-sword.co.uk The Launch of HMS Victory this year marks the 250th anniversary of the launch of hmS Victory at Chatham dockyard. after many delays, and a near wrecking at her launch, she finally floated out onto the medway on 7 may 1765. She had a long and illustrious career and is still a commissioned warship in the royal navy. Nelson’s Victory: 250 Years of War and Peace, by Brian Lavery, one of the country’s leading historians of the age of Sail, tells the complete story of her career and, in parallel, that of nelson’s life as well. Born in 1758, just three years before the Lords of the admiralty ordered Victory, nelson’s career would become closely bound to that of the great ship. Brian’s compelling new narrative, superbly illustrated in colour throughout, presents to readers a number of surprises; for one, it is said that wilhelm ii signed the mobilisation order in august 1914 sat at a desk made from the timbers of Victory. Some of you may have on your bookshelves Brian’s classic twovolume Ship of the Line. he has now written a new book on the subject, based on the superb collection of

ship models at the national maritime museum. these exquisite models tell better that words or paintings the developmental story of the great capital ships that were the epitome of British seapower during the eighteenth century. The Ship of the Line: A History in Ship Models contains the most beautiful close-up images of every aspect and detail of these ships, and is one title in Seaforth’s successful series utilising the museum collections. But who were the men who commanded these ships? the answer can be found in Nelson’s Band of Brothers; Lives and Memorials, which has been published in association with the 1805 Club and presents biographies of more than eighty officers who fought with nelson at the nile, Copenhagen and trafalgar. it delivers much new research and describes their social origins, their characters and their achievements, not just under his command, but in their lives and service beyond; and photos of their monuments and memorials, scattered across the globe, offer readers a unique opportunity to rediscover many forgotten heroes.

many books have been written about Victory but none like this, which tells the full story of the ship since she first took to the waters in may 1765. the book also tells the story of horatio nelson, who was born a few weeks before his most famous ship was ordered, and whose career paralleled hers in many ways. it does not ignore the battle of trafalgar, and indeed it offers new insights into the campaign which led up to it. it is simply a ‘must-have’ work for historians and enthusiasts, and a compelling new narrative for the general reader.

the ShiP oF the Line Brian Lavery The Ship of the Line is the second of a new series that takes selections of the best models to tell the story of specific ship types – in this case, the evolution of the ship of the line, the capital ship of its day, and the epitome of British seapower during its heyday from 1650–1850. this period too coincided with the golden age of ship modelling. the series is of particular interest to ship modellers, but all those with an enthusiasm for the ship design and development in the sailing era will attracted to the in-depth analysis of these beautifully presented books.
neLSon’S Band oF BrotherS Peter Hore while there is a perennial interest in the royal navy during the napoleonic wars and in nelson himself, there is no reference work that chronicles all the captains of his ships, their social origins, their characters and the achievements in their lives beyond their service under nelson. this new book, researched and written by distinguished historians, descendants of some of nelson’s officers, and members of the 1805 Club, presents concise biographies of those officers who fought with nelson in his three great battles, with superb colour illustration throughout.

Big gun BattLeS Robert C Stern

the outcome of much of the maritime warfare in the Second world war was decided by the torpedo or the aerial bomb, making relatively recent warship types, the submarine and aircraft carrier, the new arbiters of naval conflict. yet despite this, there was a surprising number of traditional ship-to-ship engagements involving the big guns of battleships and cruisers. this book recounts some of the most important, technically interesting, or obscure of these gunfire duels in a narrative that combines pacy storytelling with an in-depth understanding of the factors influencing victory or defeat.

the attack on the British frigate Amethyst on the yangtze river by Chinese Communists in 1949 made world headlines. there was even more publicity when the ship made a dramatic escape after being trapped for 101 days. the ‘yangtze incident’ was even made into a feature film, which depicted the ship and her crew as innocent victims of Communist aggression. the truth was more complex, and so sensitive that the government intended that some of the files should be closed until 2030. however, these have now been released and in making use of these documents this book is the first to tell the full story.

hmS Trincomalee NEW belonged to a class of 38gun Fifth rates which can claim to have been the royal navy’s standard frigate type for the whole of the napoleonic wars. Built in india of teak, she is now beautifully restored at hartlepool, and can justly claim to be the last of nelson’s frigates. as is the case for many historic ships, however, there is a surprising shortage of informative and well illustrated guides, for reference during a visit or for research by enthusiasts, ship modellers, naval buffs, historians or students. this new series redresses the gap.
NEW
this collection of thought-provoking essays by arguably the 20th century’s greatest naval historian was first published in 1974, but their continuing relevance fully justifies this reprint. it opens with a stimulating reappraisal of the naval attack on the dardanelles, the success of which would have made the disastrous gallipoli land campaign that followed completely unnecessary. marder identifies a number of relatively minor issues that made a failure of what was in reality a great strategic opportunity to shorten the war.

this volume covers the hugely important american carrier of the Second world war. the subject of this volume is the Japanese Kongo class, four ships built during the First world war as battlecruisers, but extensively modified and reconstructed between the wars as fast battleships, so that each ship presented a different appearance. they were the chosen escorts for the elite iJn carrier forces, and saw much action during the Pacific war.

But this book also tells of her life before that cataclysmic event. it tells of the ground-breaking advances in maritime engineering that she represented, as well as a hitherto unheard of degree of opulence.

the SS Lusitania entered service with Cunard in 1907. She restored the British supremacy of the key north atlantic route which the germans had seized. all this ended on 7 may 1915 when she was torpedoed by a german u-boat and sank 18 minutes later with the loss of 1,198 passengers and crew. the author concentrates not just on the disaster but its aftermath including the political recriminations and the inquiry.

the unrestricted u-Boat war threatened the very survival of Britain, whose reliance on imported food and war materials was her achilles’ heel. this is the full story of the dramatic and daring raid.
this book is the fruit of the chance discovery of a series of photographic plates belonging to alfred Carpenter, who commanded the lead ship, hmS vindictive, during the raid. these pictures provide us with a unique insight into this daring naval operation, which was to result in the most victoria crosses ever being awarded for a single action.

the men of Britain’s merchant navy, although unarmed civilians going about their lawful business were the first to be involved with the enemy in the Second world war. Less than nine hours after the declaration of war on 3 September 1939, the donaldson liner athenia was sunk without warning by a german uboat off the west coast of ireland. From that moment onwards, British merchant seamen were constantly in the front-line in all quarters of the globe.
winston Churchill enjoyed two stints as First Lord of the admiralty, at the start of the First world war and at the start of the Second. he retained close interest in naval matters, especially as the defeat of the u-boat menace was so vital in both wars to maintain the vital supplies so necessary for Britain’s war efforts. indeed, Churchill later said that this was the only thing that had threatened the ultimate allied victory.

on the third day of the war with Japan, two royal navy capital ships were sunk off malaya by air torpedo attack. they had not requested the air support that could have saved them and 840 men died in the battleship hmS Prince of wales and the battle cruiser hmS repulse. the authors re-create for the reader not only what happened, but also what it was like for the men involved.
the book begins by setting the scene in the Far east and the decisions that led Japan into war, and also by looking at the situation faced by the royal navy elsewhere, with its initial heavy losses of major ships, and especially aircraft carriers. yet, within a couple of years, the royal navy was able to send the strongest and most balanced fleet in its history to the Far east and played a major role in preventing reinforcements being flown from Japan to iwo Jima and okinawa.

this is the first book to be written about the navy’s role in the success of the arab revolt in the creation of the legendary figure of Lawrence of arabia. Following extensive and detailed research into the activities of the ships of the red Sea Patrol by the author, has become evident that, without the work of those ships, the arab revolt would have failed. Lawrence was aware of the importance and relevance of the royal navy’s operations in the red Sea and commented on it on many occasions. By doing this so comprehensively, this book gives a fresh dimension to the Lawrence of arabia legend.

this biography draws heavily on the personal diaries of the subject, robert hichens (or ‘hitch’ as he was universally known). after a brief description of his early life, the book focuses on his exceptional wartime experiences. hitch was the most highly decorated rnvr officer of the war with two dSos, three dSCs and three mentions in despatches. he was recommended for a posthumous vC. we read of his early days in vulnerable minesweepers and the dunkirk ‘dynamo’ operation, (his first dSC). the book contains detailed and graphic accounts of running battles against the more heavily armed e-boats.

david James was captured in February 1943 after abandoning ship after a fierce engagement with three german armed trawlers in the north Sea. while his first tunnel was discovered before completion, he succeeded in escaping in december 1943 and was on the run for almost a week disguised as an officer of the royal Bulgarian navy, only to be captured while boarding a ship at Lubeck. in February 1944 he escaped again, this time dressed as a Swedish sailor and, after many adventures, eventually reached Stockholm. this superb escape memoir is full of suspense and excitement.
daily life on these small ships is vividly described. the flotilla had a busy time showing the flag in the Levant and on combined operations in the aegean with the greek Sacred regiment of Commandos. the culmination of their efforts was when tony’s boat, mL838, took the surrender of the island of kos in 1945. written from the perspective of one of the “other ranks”, war of the motor gun Boats fills an important gap in the literature of the Second world war.

trading with the enemy

Nicholas Tracy
in trading with the enemy: the Covert economy during the american Civil war, new york times disunion contributor Philip Leigh recounts the little-known story of clandestine commerce between the north and South. a fascinating study, trading with the enemy adds another layer to our understanding of the Civil war.
in the miracle of the kent: a tale of Courage, Faith, and Fire, historian nicholas tracy reconstructs this extraordinary tale through records left by the participants, revealing how those aboard the kent faced their deaths, and their reactions to being offered a second chance. the story of the kent is both an edge-ofthe-seat adventure and an inspirational homage to the capacity of human will.
in By wind and iron: naval Campaigns in the Champlain valley, 1665–1815, michael g. Laramie details the maritime history of this region from the first French fortifications along the richelieu river in the late seventeenth century through the tremendous american victory over the British at the Battle of Plattsburgh on Lake Champlain in 1814. using period letters, journals, and other primary source materials, the author examines the north-eastern waterways and their tributaries within the framework of the soldiers and sailors who faced the perils of the campaigns, while at the same time clarifying the key role played by this region in the greater struggle for north america and american independence.

the wrecking of the rmS tayleur made headlines nearly 60 years before the titanic. Both were run by the white Star Line, both were heralded as the most splendid ships of their time – and both sank in tragic circumstances on their maiden voyages. Lost in the irish Sea, a storm swept the tayleur and the 650 people aboard towards a cliff, studded with rocks ‘black as death’. what happened next shocked the world.

this is the narrative of a harpooner in the whale-ship Charles w morgan, whose four-year voyage in 1849–1853 took him from new Bedford, massachusetts, to the South Pacific and on around the world. whaling was, in effect, the first oil industry, a high-risk business where huge fortunes were to be made. haley’s is the authentic voice of those that chose its dangers.
Chamier was a royal navy officer, who like his exact contemporary Captain marryat is best remembered for a series of naval novels. the Life of a Sailor was his first publication and is usually catalogued as fiction, which may be a tribute to Chamier’s story-telling skills but it is wrong – the book is an exact account of his naval career, with every personality, ship and event he describes corroborated by his service records.
in 1803 robert hay ran away to join the royal navy, and for the next eight years experienced the trials and tribulations of a sailor’s life. the taxing conditions of life onboard he found detestable and eventually he took the opportunity to desert. his descriptions of his experiences in the east indies are full of the flavour of the region, while the sailor’s natural inclination to drink and debauchery is told with verve.
this is a rare and authentic account of the african slave trade, told by one who captained slave ships in the mid eighteenth century, and it presents a remarkably truthful picture of the human cruelty and barbarity that characterised the trade. now best remembered as the author of the hymn amazing grace, newton experienced a spiritual conversion that eventually led to his embracing of cause of abolition. this superbly researched book is now recognised as the definitive account and makes for a thoroughly engrossing story, and one worthy of the greatest battle of the age of sail.

the SeCret CaPture CoCkLeSheLL Commando Captain S W Roskill as the official historian of the naval war, roskill had followed the party line when writing his authorised account, but provoked by exaggerated claims concerning a uS navy capture of a u-boat in 1944, roskill decided to set the record straight. his narrative is prefaced by brief coverage of previous submarine captures by the royal navy – three italian and one german – before covering the u 110 operation in great detail, underlining the skill and bravery of those involved.

But it is the author’s commentary that makes this work truly unique, thanks to his aerial photo interpretation experience, ability to provide intelligence analysis, and academic background.

Bernard Edwards
Based on his grandfather, Captain robert Brundles, accounts and diaries the author has created a vivid timeline of SS harmatris and the arctic Convoy Pq8.
the kaiser’s determination to starve Britain into surrender and the development of his navy and the uboats in particular meant that Britain’s merchant navy was in the front line throughout the great war. this book charts the progress of the war at sea which began with the sinking of the oil tanker San wilfrido off Cuxhaven only eight hours after the official declaration of war. the merchantman glitra was the first victim of a german u-boat (u-17) on 20 october 1914 – she was to be joined by many, many more. war under the red ensign contains many inspiring and shocking accounts of war at sea and is a gripping read.
