letter from the founders Do you identify yourself as a high-performer? Many would label themselves as such, but it is a rare few that have the drive, discipline and resources to execute every activity with excellence, day in and day out. In a decidedly competitive landscape like Toronto, how can an individual not only thrive but separate themselves from the pack. Staying hungry for opportunity and dressing like a fox (Performance Review, p32) will help you stay focused in a fast-paced workplace. Upgrade your performance and skills; take advice from the pros that know how to identify success (High Performing Men, p20). Support higher demands on your body with healthful eating (5 Superfoods, p6) and a champion’s mindset (Fighting Spirit, p26). Improved performance will get you the best of “la vie quotidienne.” ArchibaldMen. Lifestyle for the genuine and brave.

5 Superfoods that aren't in your fridge... but should be. Food is the fuel that powers your mind and body through a grueling workout or exhausting day at the office. Looking to operate optimally? Reach for these super foods next time you’re feeling under the weather, under stress or underperforming.

Garlic Antioxidant Cocktail

Garlic doesn’t just improve your pasta; it’s also notorious for strengthening your immune system. A natural antibiotic, garlic has been proven to rid the body of E.Coli, salmonella and staph before they become symptomatic. It also increases the rate at which your body creates natural killer cells, ensuring that your immune system is always ready to fight. Next time you have a cough, pop a clove.

Sardines Feel Good Food

From the boardroom to the bedroom snacking on sardines will help you improve your performance. Aside from their obvious Omega-3 heart health benefits, sardines are essential to a healthy sex life. With high levels of B12, these little swimmers give your little swimmers speed and agility. With hearty servings of Vitamin D, calcium and phosphorus, sardines also help with strengthening bone density and managing blood pressure, both key in sustaining your libido and erectile function. Now go get ‘er, slugger.

Avocado Stress Relief

Beets Athletic Enhancer

When all hell breaks loose at the office reach for an avocado to keep you calm.

When competition is fierce, beets are an instant endurance booster. It comes as no surprise that top athletes need to sustain energy during endurance activities. Luckily beets are not only a powerhouse when it comes to the carbohydrates, antioxidants and antiinflammatory nutrients; but a study from the Journal of Applied Physiology suggests that these root vegetables also helps to lower blood pressure a create a more efficient use of oxygen in the body.

B-Vitamins (or the lack thereof) are linked to feelings of anxiety, fatigue and depression. Avocados are not only rich in the stress-relieving B vitamin (friend of healthy nerves and brain cells), the versatile fruit is flush with monosaturated fat and potassium that help lower blood pressure.

Pumpkin seeds Seeds of Slumber

Tossing and turning? Pumpkin seed powder is the new pumpkin seeds to remedy a night of tossing and turning. Pumpkin seeds are incredibly high in tryptophan – the sleep-inducing amino acid made popular by Thanksgiving dinner. Tryptophan is a precursor for building the relaxing hormones serotonin and melatonin; two powerful neurotransmitters that help the brain regulate sleep. Snacking on pumpkin seeds will not only help you stay asleep but help you relax while you’re counting sheep.

No more sad songs: The blues are here in a much sexier way. Go Indigo

From Lanvin to Bottega Veneta blues were suddenly everywhere this season, highlighting the versatility and ease of this distinguished colour. With so many shades available, blue suits every man. A midnight blue suit is a great platform for playful accessorizing while lighter and brighter shades pair perfectly with a crisp white shirt. With the increasing popularity of the trend, feel free to split your suit into separates to get endless outfit options. No need to dive in the deep end, select a calm shade to add a contemporary twist to your closet without pushing your boundaries too far. Call it Cerulean or call it Indigo, call it whatever you want as long as you call your tailor.

Work Hard, Play Hard

Finally, work wear doesn’t have to feel like work. If you’re willing to take a chance on the hues or intensity, a blue suit with a classic construction will help you bridge the gap between work and play. Aced the fit? Take note of the finer details. Canvassed lapels, stand chest pocket, form-fitting darts, and convertible double-welt pockets will easily elevate your blue suit into a wardrobe cornerstone. The right silhouette can support sneakers and a tee just as well as oxfords and a button up.

Wool Ain’t Nothing But a Number

Select a high performing Super wool (Super is a code used to identify pure wool fibre, the following number refers to its fineness). Supers in the 120s and 130s range are multipurpose: breathable, durable and work well in the warmer months. “Very high S-system number doesn't guarantee the best garments," says Andy Gilchrist, author of "The Encyclopedia of Men's Clothes." "Such wools wrinkle almost as much as linen. They are delicate and not as durable as less-fine wool.” Purchasing a suit fabricated of 150s or higher turns a staple suit into a once in a “blue moon” piece.

fast cars. The ultimate performance comes from a fusion of man and machine, the car inspired by the driver and the driver led by the car.

DTM is a European racing series between three of

the world’s most elite car brands: Mercedes, BMW and Audi. Each year, teams of the world’s best engineers, designers, mechanics and drivers fight to prove that their car is the best. The data collected by Mercedes’ unique telemetry and sensor technology matched with the fierce ambition and experienced opinion of Robert Wickens mean that both measured data and personal judgement are key to the evolution of Mercedes winning machine.

‘Each race is not just a test of the car or a test

of the driver,’ says Wickens. ‘It’s a test of teamwork. [Which company] has the best driver and the best car at the same time?’

But while it is teamwork off the track, Wickens

thrives on the solitary intensity of being alone in that car.

‘What I love about motor sports is that when I’m in

the car, it’s all on me,’ he grins with excitement. With lap times that are so close and competitive (we’re talking tenths of seconds between first and last place), every meter, every second and every turn is crucial to winning first place.

‘My Dad always told me to not sweat the stuff

I can’t control and I try to emulate that in both my driving and my life,’ says Wickens. ‘I know that I need to put my energy into areas that I can manage and forget about the rest.’ But what he can control, he will.

Wickens trains seven days a week to ensure

that he is prepared for the high velocity and crushing weights that come with every turn, break and ‘blind spot check’ of every race. He practices yoga daily to manage his breathing, flexibility and core strength. Every time Wickens turns the steering wheel, he pushes the equivalent of 50lbs with his shoulders, biceps, chest, back. Every brake equals 200lbs of force. He needs to be ready.

So what does success look like for Robert

Wickens? The answer is simple: Winning.

‘It’s starting to bug me a little bit, not winning

the championship,’ he admits. ‘But Mercedes and I are

getting closer and closer every year. I’m confident. I know that together, Mercedes and I will win the championship.’

Watch Robert Wickens and team Mercedes on

their road to DTM champions on TSN5.

Winning is not just on the track, it is also in

Wickens’ head. In such a highly competitive, unforgiving environment, racing is as much a mental sport as it is high speed and power.

‘Of course I have an ego,’ smiles Wickens as he

adjusts his perfectly tailored Boss suit jacket. ‘Every professional driver does. I have to feel that I am the best driver in the world. If you go into a race thinking that you won’t win then you’ve already lost.’

Despite his overt ‘on-track’ confidence, Robert

Wickens doesn’t come off as cocky. Perhaps it is his Guelph, Ontario roots that ground him…or maybe that he has lived alone and on the road since he was sixteen. Being an international professional race driver while the

FIGHTING SPIRIT The benefits of Mixed Martial Arts far outweigh the obvious gains such as weight loss, stress relief and self-defense. Modern warriors have long grappled with misconceptions associated with the highimpact practice. The liberal contact sport has elevated itself from pay-per-view spectacle to art form, balancing the raw physicality of the sport with strong philosophical motivations.

“I am an elite athlete with many disciplines at my disposal.”

Blending boxing and freestyle wrestling, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai, MMA fighters are trained in various martial arts systems. The complete athlete is a unique fusion of styles, creating a competitor that is not dedicated to any particular pattern, rather, an athlete able to successfully evolve with and against their opponent.

“My body is both temple and machine.”

Success in the Octagon is the result of training your heart as much as your body. Care, preparation and patience are the foundations on which full-intensity training is built. To accomplish their goals, fighters must overcome weaker impulses and push beyond physical limits.- Tough is how you train, heart is how you win.

“The biggest battle is won between the ears.”

This is true of both combat and life itself. Skill, strength, stamina and speed are all crucial for any athlete but the battle

with the mind is perhaps the most crucial. Visualization is a strong tool for the fight before the fight. Using imagery to mentally rehearse how to react against a defender's action keep MMA athletes sharp and confident. They focus on the feeling of victory in vivid detail: What does the roar of the crowd sound like?

“Being undefeated can be a burden.”

The Martial Arts have a strong tradition of philosophy. With nothing to hide behind, a loss in the ring teaches fighters to lose honestly. MMA is ethical training in humility and courage

“I am the accumulation of the company I keep.”

“The sport is very much individual, but there is an army behind me, getting me ready.” Coaches, training partners, friends, and family all play a part in an athlete’s success. The type of people in ones close circle speaks to their values, ethics and fighting spirit.

gility, speed and power are no longer terms reserved strictly for the playing field. Today’s workplace commands you bring your "better, faster, stronger" self to your day-to-day job. As a pillar in your company, you need to be emphatic, show leadership and take clear yet calculated risks. This level of assertiveness leads to positive relationships for both you and your company, encouraging good standing and ultimately, a better job title — and that well deserved salary bump. Not sure how to bring that edge to your work game? Here is what you’re missing:

Dress Like a Fox Are jeans taking precedence in your weekly cycle? Is the lack of a well fitted suit, polished shoes and a sharp tie keeping you back from that well-deserved promotion? Recent studies show that wearing a suit to work not only positively changes the way your employer perceives you, it enhances your personal performance. "When I wear a suit and tie, I know I look good,’ says Cisco salesman Jeff Martin. ‘When I show up to a meeting well put together, it shows the client that I’m meticulous and confident in my appearance and ensures them that I will give their business the same care and attention." Peacocking aside, this attitude gives ambitious professionals the confidence to rise up the ranks faster than their tie-less colleagues. Formal clothing doesn’t just look good, it makes a man perceive the world differently. “Putting on formal clothes makes us feel powerful, and that changes the basic way we see the world,” says Abraham Rutchick, an author of the study and a professor of psychology at California State University, Northridge. His study of the psychology behind clothing highlights the longstanding symbolism associated with the power suit. According to the magazine The Atlantic, "wearing clothing more formal than usual makes people think more broadly and holistically, rather than narrowly and about fine-grained details. In psychological parlance, wearing a suit encourages people to use abstract processing more readily than concrete processing." Essentially, this makes men more aware of strategic alternatives, the utilization of resources all geared toward company growth and productivity. The moral of this story? Show up in a suit tomorrow and watch the rewards roll in.

Stay Hungry Resist the desire to ‘grab a Snickers’ when your stomach rumbles, hold off until after you’ve finalized that big project. Apparently, staying hungry is key to improving strategic decision making. Through admittedly very funny Betty White and Mr. T ad campaigns and the increase of the term ‘hangry’ (hungry + angry), it is assumed that hunger makes people act irrationally and on impulse without regard for long-term results. Further research proves that Betty is wrong. A recent study in the US National Library of Medicine asked subjects to fast for one night before taking part in their experiment. When they arrived at the lab the next day, researchers gave half of the subjects breakfast before asking the entire group to complete the ‘Iowa’s Gamblers Task,’ a psychological test based on gambling that is meant to simulate real life decision making (You can do the test yourself via an iTunes app). The results showed that those who were hungry made more advantageous decisions and resisted choices that were rewarding in the short term and disadvantageous in the long term. Hunger seemed to enhance instinct, sharpen perceptions and judgement processes. Avoid your next afternoon snack, your career will thank you for it.

Keep Playing Video Games Feel free to ignore the guilt trips: those hours spent gaming on Xbox are not wasted at all. You can play Call of Duty tonight and know that it is not only improving your learning abilities; it is also improving your capacity to make quick and meaningful decisions, key for excelling in executive functioning. According to Psychology Today, ‘Executive functioning refers to a person’s ability to allot his or her mental resources (such as perception,

34

attention, memory) in ways that allow for rapid, efficient problem solving or decision-making.’ Executive functioning is a set of skills exhibited in successful C-Suite executives, sought after in employees wishing to progress in their company and displayed in gamers. Studies show that those who play video games for at least one hour a day have superior multitasking and perceptual reaction times to their non-gaming counterparts. It is assumed that decreased reaction times means reduced accuracy (ie: your quick draw may be lightning fast but your chances of hitting the target are slim or vice versa). Not true for gamers who seem to have mastered the art of on-target fast responses through hours

of intense, visually compelling on-screen action. This of course means that you finally have an excuse to buy that gaming chair you’ve been eyeing. Cue the Modern Work Environment Lab’s Emperor 200. With it’s sleek and sexy scorpion-like BMW interior look, LED screens and air filtration systems, this premium gaming chair will also give you a full days dose of Vitamin D for a cool $44,750. But think of it as an investment in your future. In today’s fast paced work environment, assertion and confidence are essentials. 007like reactions are key…in Tom Ford’s latest wouldn’t be a bad idea either. Shine your shoes, ditch your khakis and skip lunch to elicit your sense of power.

WELKOM TO

While tourists were busy gawking in the red-light district and chowing down on Bitterballen, the Dutch capital’s easy-going urbanites were busy turning the city into a vibrant, top class metropolis. Amsterdam is transforming historical buildings into sleek hotels, revamping the relaxed restaurant scene and dressing to kill. Fear not. Just because Amsterdam is cleaning up its act doesn’t mean there isn’t a delightful amount of debauchery to be discovered.

DRINK Door 74

Reguliersdwarsstraat 74I If you’re looking for easy drinking that’s hard to find, this speakeasy is literally a hidden gem. Behave like a gentleman and order an innovative cocktail served in antique barware, or (since you’re behind closed doors) let the dice fall where they may with a board game that doubles as a menu.

44

Regular and Jack

Reguliersdwarsstraat 37 For those seeking something a little more casual, Regular and Jack is about as unpretentious as a bar can get. The lighting is dim and the Bloody Marys are served straight from a slushy machine.

VISIT Ketel One Distillery

Hoofdstraat 14, Schiedam If a windmill fully stocked with premium vodka isn’t your thing, you’re in the wrong country. Located on the outskirts of Schiedam, the Nolet Distillery is an impressive blend of heritage and innovation (the windmill actually produces 20% of the distillery’s energy while the first and oldest copper pot still “Distilleer Ketel 1” – is still hand stoked.) The Nolet family spirit is instilled in every bottle, a member of the family (with the best job ever) always sampling the product before its release. Call ahead to book a tour.

STAY Hotel De Hallen

Bellamyplein 47 Drop your bags amongst the contemporary art collection and sleek Scandinavian furniture of the former tram depot turned boutique hotel. Wash away your jet lag in bathrooms equipped with whirlpool tubs. Luxurious linens are so inviting that there is no shame in taking an afternoon nap before heading out for a night on the town.

EAT Morgan & Mees

Tweede Hugo de Grootstraat 2 When the chic crowd gets hungry, they head to culinary hotspot Morgan & Mees. Taking up residence in a rather unusual location (a refurbished 1880s girls' orphanage), the restaurant fuses quality fare with lush garden views. Feast on a plate of oysters or for something slightly more filling, order spaghetti cockles with sundried tomatoes, prosecco, chili, garlic and coriander.

WORTH THE HANGOVER King’s Day

Every year on King WillemAlexander’s birthday (April 27) the Dutch forgo the pomp and pretension of a typical royal party and paint the town orange— literally. To truly celebrate King's Day like a King, opt for a boat ride along the picturesque canals with a private DJ. Easily the best Dam party you'll ever attend. It’s an experience you won’t soon forget, or completely remember.

GETTING THERE

Air Canada’s continued international expansion now includes direct flights from Toronto to Amsterdam. From their signature Maple Leaf lounge and right into Schipol airport, enjoy your flight with a pre-Dam cocktail or two in the comfort of Air Canada’s business class recliners.

Prinsengracht 531 This high-end retailer stocks the kind of indigo that makes discerning denim lovers quiver with excitement. As a must see host of hot European fashion, this concept store is in good company, nestled amongst the cobblestone streets of P.C. Hoofstraat (Amsterdam’s equivalent to Rodeo Drive). Slipping into the store for coffee made by a charming, denim clad barista is the easiest way to get your caffeine fix while shopping their cool new collections.

BEGINNERS GUIDE TO

Vodka

The Bloody Mary: ALL GROWN UP

Real Men Drink FruitNaturally While liquor stores are flooded with a new wave of flavoured vodka, the trend is anything but revolutionary. Vodka dates back to the end of the 9th century and early production was crude. To mask impurities distillers flavoured their spirits with herbs, fruits and spices (marshmallow fluff seems to be glaringly absent from the list). If you’re looking to impress, a vodka infused with natural essential oils will exhibit complexity over sickly sweetness. Try Ketel One Citroen, the result of extracts from six citrus fruits that are refined and blended by experts in Grasse.

Sip. Eat. Repeat. A good vodka doesn’t need to be spiked with vermouth to be enjoyed (or however you shot it back in college). A high-quality vodka should be appreciated the Russian way. Fill a tall shot glass halfway and sip alongside zakuski, Russia’s answer to tapas. Replace your standard potato chips with something as simple as salted herring, or as lush as caviar to celebrate the prestige of your spirit.

The Most Expensive Vodka May Not Be Worth It How can the folks at Billionaire Vodka sleep at night while selling their wheat-based spirit for an extremely accessible $3.75 million (that’s several zeros shy of a billion)? Sure, it might be filtered through crushed diamonds to remove any impurities, but at this price point it also filtered out any chance we can get drunk. Buy this only for the story.

46

Your average tomato vodka cocktail this is not. When you don’t want to drink a meal the morning after, this deconstructed Bloody Mary is guaranteed to breathe new life into your aching body. Although the Tomatini is not a classic yet, this incredibly light and elegant cocktail is sure to complement every “adult” brunch. Ingredients: 1 fresh tomato 50 ml Ketel One Vodka 15 ml white balsamic vinegar 15 ml freshly squeezed lemon juice 10 ml sugar syrup 1 pinch salt 1 pinch black pepper How to make: Cut the tomato into 8-10 chunks and muddle in a cocktail shaker. Add the balance of ingredients with lots of ice. Shake vigorously and strain into a martini glass. Garnish with black pepper.

Our 3 Favourite Vodka Bars Montecito Oozes elegance and a SoCal vibe. Grab a seat and martini in the bistro and watch the "who's who" in TO cruise by. 299 Adelaide St. West, Toronto. Avant Garde Hard to tell whether the warmth radiating from the bar has something to do with décor or all the alcoholic revelry. Sipping vodka is often accompanied by Cheetos to soak up the spirits. 135 ½ Besserer Street, Ottawa. Bearfoot Bistro Even though we spend most of the year trying to avoid the cold, there is something inviting about wrapping yourself up in a Canada Goose jacket and sampling vodka in the Ketel One Ice Room. Make it an educational excursion, grab a flight and give yourself an excuse to go for the good stuff. 4121 Village Green, Whistler.

Enjoy a Rocky Relationship

Vodka Does Not Always Favour the Freezer

Ice can be nice if you chill out on the low-quality cubes. A bigger ice cube has a lower surface area to volume ratio. Translation: it melts slower and dilutes the vodka less. If you’re making ice at home, make sure you’re using filtered water: filtered water can lessen the chance of funky impurities which could ruin your delicious vodka.

So maybe you enjoy your vodka chilled to viscous temps, after all you can forget it in the freezer, and it won’t freeze. Be careful. Chilling vodka does give you a richer mouthfeel but get your bottle too icy, and you start suppressing the flavours and aromas that make this spirit unique. Find the sweet spot or enjoy Ketel One Vodka at room temperature to taste crisp, sweet licorice and lively pepper tingle.

Walk the Vodka Talk A solid vocabulary will convince bartenders you’re a cocktail expert, not someone who just turned of age. Confidence without the knowledge to back it up will result in a bad drink and a miserable bartender. Know the difference between a martini, shaken or stirred. Remember that a cocktail poured over ice is “on the rocks, and “neat” refers to a single liquor poured directly from the bottle (bypassing ice or any mixer) and into your glass.

Do not under any circumstance try to order a Screwdriver served “neat”—unless you never want to return to said bar.

Shape Up Your Stemware Don’t let chipped glassware come between you and an elevated vodka adventure. Glassware is the primer for the experience you’re about to have so retire your coffee mug and anything that is plastic. If you’re hosting a tasting, choose a tulip shaped glass that will contain and accentuate the aromas.

A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME – WITH RIMOWA The 1920s marked the beginning of modern air travel and the golden age of Hollywood. In 1919, Hugo Junkers presented the world’s first all-metal commercial aircraft. It was made using the aircraft aluminum alloy discovered by Alfred Wilm in 1906. In 1950, RIMOWA presented its suitcase with the unmistakable grooved design made of the same material – at the time, it was the lightest suitcase in the world. RIMOWA was a real pioneer in the sector, starting the trend for lightweight luggage back then. RIMOWA STORE TORONTO: 101 BLOOR ST W SUITE # 101 (ENTRANCE ON ST THOMAS ST.) PHONE: (416) 922-2644
