Cities and Eyes 4: Phyllis CITY 226: Introduction to Architectural Design Fall 2014 Bryn Mawr College
The objective of this assignment is to concretize the cit y Phyllis, described in Cities and Eyes 4 in Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities. Phyllis distracts the young traveler with mesmerizing beaut y and bewilders them with intricate routes within its own structure. However, one does not remember the generic and ambitious presentation Phyllis manufactures, but the ever ydayness and the event fulness which enable one to personalize the cit y. The road begins to disappear under one’s feet. One notices the nuanced change affecting one’s senses and memories about a cit y. In this collage, I used basswood sticks, PV boards, and arcr ylic boards to represent one’s subsequent impression of the cit y; as one spends more time in Phyllis, the architectural elements gradually become less discernible. Each pin represents a memorable event or place one encounters in Phyllis. The threads signifies routes one has taken; one might find out a shor tcut or a deadend. Eventually, the journey in Phyllis ends.

The assignment requested the students to design a gallery for Bryn Mawr College. The proposed site sits in between Louis Kahn’s Erdman Hall and collegiate Gothic Pembroke Hall. The site has potential views to Erdman Hall and suggests an axial padestrian movement though Pembroke Arch and furthur to one of Bryn Mawr’s cherished site of tradition, Senior Row.

Architecture is more than just an edifice from the past but also an opportunity to engage contemporary social, cultural, and economic influences to anticipate our needs.

The objective is to enhance current conditions through design, and eventually, to challenge and change the paradigm.
Floor plans of Level 1 to Level 4. Pencil on Velum paper.
Daylight study photoshoped on original drawing.
South elevation view of model showing openings on facade. Chipboard, acrylic board and basswood.
Balconies help recoup natural lighting on the north side. Chipboard, acrylic board and basswood.
Natural light will be able to penetrate the house through the skylight.
The assembly consists of 5 units in all. Positions of the balconies does not forfeit privacy of the residents.

In this collection of photographs, I intend to inspect and investigate at various scales how objects respond to the space surrounding.
