A LETTER FROM THE FOUNDATION PRESIDENT First and foremost, thank you fans. From our loyal season ticket holders to our charitable corporate partners to our supporters around the world, we are able to have the best Foundation in professional sports thanks to YOU. As you browse the following pages, please know that your generosity is behind each of our initiatives bringing these pioneering programs to life. We thank you. Now, let’s look back. The Pittsburgh Penguins organization branded the 2017.18 season with the phrase “Driven for More.” These three simple words truly resonated with our team and front office as we focused on giving more, than ever before, both on the ice and in the community. On the ice, we were driven to further our winning legacy with heart-stopping hockey moments leading to a 12th straight Stanley Cup Playoff appearance on the heels of back-to-back Stanley Cup Championships. Off the ice, we were driven to imbed our legacy within the community through innovative programs and transcendent partnerships combining for a better tomorrow for our youth. Every season, the Penguins Foundation is truly driven for more as we strive to surpass the successes from the year prior. Without a doubt, the 2017.18 season proved to be one for the record books. From raising $2 million dollars in just two hours during Penguins Charity Night on AT&T SportsNet to raising $450,000 at our inaugural Night of Assists presented by Highmark, the Penguins Foundation was able to reach new heights and exceed goals never dreamed of before. In our 8th season, we once again donated over $1 million in Penguins Foundation Grants, funded by the 50/50 Raffle, to area organizations that further our belief that kids are the future. We also elevated the gameday experience by inviting live entertainment to our auction, which helped to raise
PITTSBURGH PENGUINS FOUNDATION /// COMMUNITY REPORT 2017-18
over $135,000 for the Foundation in just 47 games. We further committed to expanding the great game of hockey through the birth of our Learn to Play Dek Hockey and Try Hockey for Free programs, as well as the construction of our 13th Project Power Play rink… with more to come. We took on groundbreaking projects through Operation Restore, including the revitalization of the Cascades in South Park, in order to create and maintain a beautiful Pittsburgh for our youth. We devoted our efforts to combat the devastating opioid problem by supporting the FBI’s Heroin Outreach Prevention and Education (HOPE) program for students to learn prevention techniques and put an end to drug abuse. Further, we bolstered our C.O.O.L Zone program with four “igloos” now in existence, plus a fifth location underway, to assist with mental health issues in our youth. The list goes on… With your help, this was an exceptional season for our organization. As we move forward, we promise to further our drive to do more for what truly matters to the future of this great city… kids. We hope you enjoy the projects highlighted in this season’s 2017.18 Community Report. Without you, we would not have accomplished these successes.

ABOUT THE FOUNDATION
THE MISSION
OF THE PENGUINS FOUNDATION To actively promote physical well-being, encourage teamwork, stress the value of education, and provide essential life skills to young people in our community through youth hockey and other activities.
THE STORY
OF THE PENGUINS FOUNDATION The year 2010 proved to be a year of transition for the Pittsburgh Penguins organization. The team’s longtime home moved from the Civic Arena to a new state-of-the-art arena. That same year, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation was created, enveloping all of the organization’s charitable efforts under one umbrella. Ironically, the demolition of the Civic Arena created the funding needed to build a base for the Foundation and its programs. Ornaments forged from the Civic Arena’s roof raised $2.5 million to fund the Foundation’s first programs thanks to support from the best fans in hockey. Focused on our region’s youth, the Penguins Foundation has embraced a vast array of programs that emphasize education, physical fitness, and the well-being of our area’s children and their families. With strong leadership provided by Penguins ownership, the Foundation strives to continue its mission of serving the people of Pittsburgh through new and innovative programs - ultimately building the brightest future for our great city.

LENDING A HAND Helping Humboldt The hockey community joined together in April 2018 to support the Humboldt Broncos, a Canadian junior “A” team, following a tragic bus accident in Saskatchewan. The Penguins organization provided a $20,000 donation to families of the Humboldt team while also leaving “Sticks Out for Humboldt” at PPG Paints Arena. Individual players and Penguins alumni also shared their support to uplift spirits of the surviving Broncos, families and team personnel.
Vegas Strong On October 1, 2017, the nation mourned the victims of the mass shooting at the Route 91 Festival in Las Vegas, Nevada. In addition, the Foundation collected donations online from the Penguins fan base raising the total to nearly $27,000.

“
On April 6, 2018, a community of 6,000 people was rocked. The Humboldt Broncos hockey team, in my home province of Saskatchewan, an hour from my home town of Saskatoon, was involved in an awful bus crash that claimed the lives of 16 people. This tragedy really hit home for a lot of people worldwide and rocked the hockey community. The Penguins and Penguins Foundation stepped up and made a $20,000 donation to the team’s GoFundMe page. I am extremely touched and proud of the Penguins and the Foundation for the love they have shown beyond that generous donation. I love the heart that the Penguins and the Foundation continually show in times of need. It was felt 1,756 miles away in my home province of Saskatchewan. Thank you to the Penguins and the Penguins Foundation. We’re all Broncos!” Colby Armstrong Penguins Alumni Association

“
Having the Penguins partner with us for our Stuff-A-Bus toy drive has made the entire campaign more accessible to a wider variety of people, which has increased donations and helped out more children in the region. We couldn’t imagine doing Stuff-A-Bus without the Penguins now, that’s how much of an impact they have made to the campaign. OPERATION SHOEBOX Operation Shoebox To brighten the holidays for senior citizens, Operation Shoebox was created to send joy to those residing at assisted living facilities prior to Christmas. On December 22, 2017, members of the Penguins staff delivered 41 shoebox gifts, which were donated by the front office, to the residents of the Wexford Healthcare Center.
The Shoebox Project The Penguins Foundation and the Penguins Wives Association partnered to support The Shoebox Project, a new initiative for the 2017.18 season. Using a monetary donation, as well as donated items from the Citrone Thirty-Three Foundation, the Penguins ladies stuffed shoeboxes with items that would help any woman feel special. The shoeboxes were then gifted to women’s shelters in the Pittsburgh region.
“
This year, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Wives Association enabled us to brighten the holidays for 277 local women in need. We gathered in early December to prepare the shoeboxes and kick off the holiday season. Thanks to the generous donation we received, The Shoebox Project was able to service every woman at 5 homeless shelters and 2 domestic abuse shelters throughout the city. The women we serve are women who likely will not receive anything else for Christmas. To be able to send them a gift and a message saying that they are being thought of was a wonderful way to spread cheer right before the holidays.” Melissa Armstrong Board of Directors Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation

I FIGHT FOR… Hockey Fights Cancer Held each autumn, the league-wide Hockey Fights Cancer initiative aims to raise awareness and funds for cancer research. On November 7, 2017, the Penguins hosted HFC and also welcomed a special guest to PPG Paints Arena for this incredible cause. Darran Dunlap, the 6-year old daughter of Colin Dunlap, a media personality in Pittsburgh, took the ice for the National Anthem, while also meeting the Penguins players. To further draw attention to the cause, the Penguins coaching staff and broadcasters donned purple ties, while the players warmed-up in purple jerseys.

Special Visits
In December 2017, the ladies of the Penguins Wives Association created baskets filled with items unique to their significant other for this truly one-of-a-kind auction. Over the past eleven years, the team’s wives and girlfriends have donated over $130,000 to local charities through the Holiday Baskets Auction. This season’s selected charity, Blessings in a Backpack, received nearly $15,000 thanks to this initiative.
On January 25, 2018, members of the Penguins Wives Association distributed co-branded Love Your Melon Penguins knit hats to children at the UPMC Children’s Hospital Oncology Unit and at Ronald McDonald House, both in Pittsburgh, PA.

Whether it be the annual toy drive, food collection or any other worthwhile cause, you will always find the ladies of the Penguins Wives Association lending a helping hand to the Foundation.

Always Assisting
In 1998, the Penguins Alumni Association created its signature event, the Alumni Charity Golf Classic presented by Verizon, to assist local children’s charities. Over 30 former players and coaches gathered at Valley Brook Country Club on August 22, 2017 for a beautiful day on the links raising over $56,000 for the Mario Lemieux Foundation, Lending Hearts and the Penguins Foundation. Over the past 20 years, the event has raised over $705,000.
During the 2017.18 season, the Penguins Alumni Association continually supported and partnered with the Penguins Foundation. From scholarship presentations to signing sessions to fundraising, the Penguins Alumni make amazing assists to the Foundation and Pittsburgh community.
The True North Each year, Penguins Alumni visit the Yukon Territory in Northwest Canada. Visiting 10 to 20 communities on the annual trip, Penguins Alumni hold youth hockey clinics, attend assemblies at local schools, and play in charity games. This season, Jamie Leach, Aaron Asham, J.S. Aubin, and John Chabot made the northern trek.

The Blood Science Foundation’s new partnership with the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation allows us to better support the Central Blood Bank. The $5,000 grant we received provided funding to local high schools for scholarships. Last year, Central Blood Bank awarded over $200,000 to high schools which hosted blood drives for this program. The program highlights some of the Blood Science Foundation’s top priorities: increasing blood collected from local donors, increasing the public’s awareness as to the importance of routine blood donation, and giving back to our local Pittsburgh community.” Mark Giaquinto President & Chief Financial Officer Blood Science Foundation
“
Support from the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation has a tremendous impact on our work to amplify voices of youth. Funding allows us to annually welcome 500+ students to our radio studios to share original music, writing and conversation. The Foundation also makes it possible for us to bring recording kits and staff to 50+ locations so that we can capture authentic voices of youth in under-resourced schools and community centers that would otherwise not be represented. When youth recognize that their voices are valued, they also recognize that they, themselves, are valued. When adults are exposed to their ideas, they develop stronger empathy toward youth, ultimately demonstrating that Pittsburgh is a region that cares deeply about children and youth. We’re grateful to partner with the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation as we pursue this shared passion.” Larry Berger Founder and Executive Director SLB Radio Productions, Inc.
