Titanic Quarter Regeneration | Belfast, UK FINAL PROJECT

2016 SPRING POST INDUSTRIAL AREA REGENERATION 1:3000 on A0

FLOATING LANDSCAPE The site is located at Queen’s Island, the heart of Belfast Harbour, northeast to the Belfast city center. It used to belong to the Harland & Wolff Company which designed and built the most famous ship in the world --- Titanic in the beginning of last century. However, it is now occupied with large brown field. The site is artificially accumulated by multiple layers through 3 cut & fill channel constructions from the 18 th century. The filling materials, such as mud and sand, are quite flexible, thus, buildings at Titanic Quarter have to build the deep pile foundation which support them from the bedrock more than 20m below the ground. That is to say, comparing with these buildings, the landscape area without a stable supporter tends to be floating on the surface. My concept is based on this floating character and I am trying to create recreational public space for both tourists and people living and working here in the future through the process of cut and fill, and reveal this floating feeling at the same time.

The Floating Waterfront Promenade is seated at the edge of the park and industrial area. Apart from forming a new enjoyable circulation, it with the under canopy area beside it creates a space for people to relax.

The Floating Garden is beside the new Titanic gallery and is composed of several rised planters with bench at their sides. It is an area for quiet activity. The combination of hard material from the site and the mixed planting create new balance between industrial past and present.

The Floating Bridge is changed from the existing gate of the dry dock. It is propoed at the middle of the dry dock and divides it into two parts: water and tree planting. People walking on it could experience the floating feeling by seeing water on one side and the birch canopy on the other.

The Floating Boardwalk is an important link between the two sides of the eco basin which form the sustainable drainage system of the site.

Recreational Landscape & Memorial Park | Krakow, Poland 2015 AUTUMN

MEMORIAL LANDSCAPE DESIGN

CONCEPT & DESIGN LAYER The site is within the walking distance from Krakow city centre and has the potential to become an important recreational green space for both locals as well as the tourists.

Respecting to Memory

My most significant impression of the site is its rich history and memory, because it includes the area of former Plaszow Concentration Camp during WWII.

Reflecting Memory

My design is based on the concept of 3 attitude towards the memory, which are respecting to memory, reflecting memory and recreating new memory. I’m trying to create different spatial characters by using the topography and vegetation and guide people to explore the story of the land.

DESIGN CONCEPT X2

X1

PROTOTYPE: Infinite Möbius Strip

PROTOTYPE: Rain fall in the forest

The proposed plan consists of two parts: Mobius ring (German: Möbiusband), which is a topological structure, is often considered as a sign of infinity "∞". When standing on a giant Möbius strip surface, people would walk along the "road" all the way and never stop. Therefore, it could represent the role of landscape in hydrology ---- water recycling. Mobius strip itself has many wonderful properties. For example, cutting a Möbius strip along the center line with a pair of scissors yields one long strip with two full twists in it, rather than two separate strips. It is the prototype of the design. The zigzag shape is inspired by the natural landscape of the site when rain drops in the forest.

SOFT & HARD MATERIAL SELECTION The small square at the entrance is paved with dark pervious concrete paving, which can effectively reduce surface runoff and also nice watching.

Dark gray pervious concrete

Playgrounds is paved with light pervious concrete pavement. The bright color increases visual sense of space dimensions.

The edge of pool is fixed with stone cages and they can play a role in physical filtration.

The permeable light colored pebbles paving is used in the Rainwater Pool, which is easy for plants to grow.

Curved retaining wall imitates the site of the ancient city of Huizhou in Anhui province where white walls and gray tiles are used. Combined with changes in the terrains, it can act as the diversion channel between Rainwater Pool.
