Swain’s Store Began in …

...when logging truck operator & PA Salmon Club manager Cliff Swain and his wife Bee decided to start a retail business. They opened the 7,000 square foot “Cliff Swain Sales” store in Port Angeles, Washington, featuring military surplus, hardware, and fishing gear, with the slogan “tents, trinkets, tools, tackle and trousers”.

1957

Over the last 58 years, Swain’s General Store has gone through quite an evolution: when opened in 1957 military surplus, hardware, and fishing gear were the primary merchandise offered. Now, after two expansions in the mid-1960’s (growing to 28,000 sq.ft. of retail space), adding a 12,500 sq.ft. warehouse in 1979, the acquisition of more property for parking in 1993, the building of a 6,000 sq.ft. addition to the store front in 2000, and the latest expansion in the fall of 2014, which added 4,300 sq.ft., for a grand total of 38,300 sq.ft. of retail space on two floors.

ain Cliff andoBueendSw Our F ers

Our goal at Swain’s General Store is to have what our customers want, when they want it, and at a fair price. Customer service from a friendly and knowledgeable staff of 47 employees is a top priority for Swain’s. Half of our employees have been with us for 10-47 years. We often have loyal customers from all over the world comment how much they love our store. Locals will bring visitors to our store and tell us “they said we had to take them to Swain’s. ‘Because Swain’s Has Everything’”.

SecondBGecky Swain eneration Owner

Another focus of Swain’s General Store is our sense of community and the giving back through donations and sponsorships. Swain’s General Store and the Swain’s Family Foundation (established by Cliff Swain) has given back over $600,000 in the past 58 years to community/charities, groups, events, and youth activities on the North Olympic Peninsula. Our founder, Cliff Swain passed away in 1995 and his wife Bee in 1997. Swain’s family ownership and tradition continued with their daughter, Rebecca until her untimely passing in 2011. Her three children, Aaron, Ryan, and Kasey now own Swain’s General Store and they proudly carry on the tradition of the Swain’s family into the third generation.

Still going strong in Our recent expansion began in the spring of 2014 with the acquisition of Pacific Refrigeration, when Dave Hassel decided to retire, leaving this space available. Acquiring the Pacific Refrigeration space, gave us the opportunity to add 4,300 sq. feet of retail space.

2015

Swain’s family would like to congratulate and wish Dave and Deb the best in their retirement. With this additional space we have been able to grow our retail footprint to 38,300 square feet! We have expanded and remerchandised every department within our store Hardware, Sporting Goods, Men’s and Women’s Apparel, Footwear, and Sundries. New lines have also been added and many categories have been expanded, to better your shopping experience and serve your needs. In many categories we offer the largest selection on the peninsula: fishing gear, camping equipment, footwear for the entire family, work wear, socks, work gloves and canning supplies, just to name a few. We have relocated and expanded our hardware service counter where we offer computer custom color matching and paint mixing, key cutting and many other services, along with expert advice. We have relocated and expanded our sporting goods service center where we can put line on your reel and help you get set up with the right gear for your next adventure. If archery or bow hunting is your passion, we have expanded our archery department and built a service department in our backroom with two factory trained technicians on staff to set up and repair your equipment. For your convenience, new bathrooms have been constructed at far end of the first floor by our paint department. We also remodeled our upstairs bathrooms in our women’s department. We are very proud of our staff for all of their hard work and commitment throughout our expansion project this past year, for this we say THANK YOU. We would also like to recognize all of our retirees and previous employees from the past 58 years – thank you for the years you contributed to help Swain’s General Store become what it is today. ALSO A BIG THANK YOU to our community and customers! Thank you for your loyalty and support for the past 58 years. Without you there is no way we would have become what we are today. So stop in and say hi - we are here to serve you as we have the last 58 years. Thank you to our local contractor, Hoch Construction, and to all the subcontractor’s involved in our remodel. Also a thank you for the exterior paint job on the building done by D & K Painting!

Mick Dodge

Born in the Olympic Mountains and raised between two cultures (Hoh Rain Forest and Okinawa), Mick Dodge was mentored by Loggers, Marines and Martial Artists. After four decades of life, Mick Dodge took his teachings on a walk and became known as the Barefoot Sensei. His walked weaved through lands both wild and tame - trying to make sense of our modern cultural story. The Earthgym training practice that evolved attracted National Geographic who produced a TV show highlighting his deep love of the forest and desire to show off the wonder and beauty of these Olympic Mountains. Mick Dodge shares a Bare Sole Practice of how to shift and shape your personal and community story by following your feet to the source of all story - the Olympic Mountains.
