welcome to arts in action Where can you find a juried arts and crafts show featuring nearly 50 artisans, live music and dancing, a world-class invitational sand sculpture contest, great food and drink, two classic car shows and live art demonstrations, all in a fun, street fair atmosphere in a beautiful waterfront setting? It’s all there for your enjoyment at the Port Angeles Rotary Nor’wester Arts in Action Festival, held July 23-25, 2010, at the Port Angeles City Pier. Artisans from throughout the Puget Sound region will display, demonstrate and sell their crafts and artistic creations. New to the festival this year is the Port Angeles Art Council, providing art demonstrations and interactive art projects at the Gateway Center. Festival sponsor Windermere Real Estate welcomes eight worldclass sand artists to the invitational sand sculpture competition. This year’s theme is “Legends of Science Fiction.” Come and see these artists create amazing and gravity-defying

sand sculptures, all while they compete for qualifying spots in the international sand sculpture final competition to be held in Federal Way, Wash., later this summer. What would summer be without the chance to view and admire classic cars? On Saturday, the festival features the “Dream Machines” and on Sunday we will have “Porches on the Pier.” A wide variety of live entertainment will be on stage throughout the festival. Food vendors and a beer and wine garden will fill your hunger and thirst. Festival hours are noon – 7 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. Saturday, and 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Sunday. We look forward to seeing you there. — Norm Schaaf Port Angeles Rotary Nor’wester President, 2010-2011

Familiar faces at competition + BY doc reiss | nor’wester rotary

The North American Masters Invitational is again presented by Windermere Real Estate and supported by area businesses this year. These wonderfully, civicminded people are the reason we are able to bring you some of the finest sand carvers you’ll ever see. It is because of their support that our contest has grown. Our event is not only one of the top five sand sculpting contests in North America, it is now also a qualifier contest for the World Championship of Sand Sculpting. Whoever wins here is automatically guaranteed a position at “The World’s” (www.wcsandsculpting.com). As you tour the gallery, make note of their sponsorship and afterward, perhaps say “Thank you” to one or two you know. This year’s contest brings eight master sculptors to Port Angeles, many who have been here before. The current World Solo Champion, Carl Jara, has come here for eight years. Another familiar face is Dan Belcher, the only three-time consecutive World Solo Champion, who has been here for seven years. This year, Dan returns as the Sand A.I.R. (Artist in Residence). That is a designation awarded to anyone who places first here two years in a row. Dan will return this year and next year on a stipend. He will not compete in the general competition, but can still win People’s Choice and Sculptor’s Choice awards. Through the years, some of the finest sand sculptors on earth have graced our event and this year is no exception. The talent is exceptional and given the theme, “Legends of Science Fiction,” anything is possible. Damon Farmer returns from Kentucky. You may remember his “Great Barrier Reef” from last year or his depiction of the future of sand with “The Castlematic 3000” sand sculpting machine from 2008.

Damon Langlois and Sue McGrew, who each did a tribute to motherhood last year, also return. Fred Dobbs has sculpted here occasionally. He is so busy that he does not compete as a rule. We are his exception. He was last here in 2006 during “Fun on the Farm” and created a cow and a bull in formal evening attire ballroom dancing. The piece was called “Moo-vin & Groovin.” Fred works in several media and once sculpted 1,500 pounds of chocolate. Jeff Strong sculpted here back in 2002 when we broke the world record for the tallest, hand built sculpture. Although that was a team effort, he has been competing regularly as a solo artist since then. We often discover talent because of a referral from a sculptor. Firat Uysal will be joining us for the first year, coming from Turkey. Several sculptors have recommended him and we agree. He is a younger sculptor who has already compiled an impressive portfolio. So bring the family to the sand sculpture gallery and watch art being created before your very eyes as the world’s finest carve for you. See you there!

Display sculptures kick off festival Master sculptor Charlie Beaulieu returns to Port Angeles in a non-competing capacity to build the display sculptures that kick off Arts in Action. About a week before the Arts in Action festivities begin, sand is trucked in to the North Olympic Peninsula. Charlie, who is among the top 10 sand sculptors in the world, will then spend days constructing two sculptures — one in front of the Port Angeles Windermere office and another at the Longhouse Market & Deli in Blyn. Both sculptures will remain on display throughout the Arts in Action weekend. Stop by and see the work in progress — and keep stopping by to see the pieces evolve from grains of sand into works of art.

eight artists, three days of sculpting

Damon Langlois is a sculptor and designer from Victoria, B.C. With more than a decade of experience sculpting sand with “The Sandboxers” sculpture team, he has won numerous awards and accolades, including Team First Place and People’s Choice at the World Championship competition. His cubist depiction of a mother and child called “Life” won him third place in the 2009 North American Masters Invitational, while his sculpture of a jazz trio received the Sculptor’s Choice award in 2008. Damon’s reputation as a highly skilled sculptor has taken him to events across the United States and all over the world, from Belgium to South Africa. When not in the sandbox, Damon plies his creativity and ingenuity designing control panels as the principle owner of Codetta Product Design.

Damon Farmer is a Kentuckian who paints, animates, designs and builds theatrical sets, creates public art projects and undertakes various other creative endeavors, but his favorite medium has been sand since a visit to a beach in 1975. In those decades of sandcarving, he has won the World Solo Championship, the North American Solo Championship, the American Championship and several other competitions. His works tend to be crowd favorites — he took home the People’s Choice award at both the 2008 and 2009 North American Masters Invitational, as well as placing third in 2008. Damon has been sculpting sand since January 1975 during what he calls “his first adult visit to a beach.” As an art student on a trip to Florida, he discovered the creative potential of shaping sand. He has sculpted in various materials, including wood, marble and clay, but notes that sand is his favorite. Creating sand sculptures is also the main focus of his company, Shadetree Studio. To see some of his work, visit shadetreestudio.com.

H. Firat Uysal H. Firat Uysal comes to Port Angeles all the way from Turkey. The sculptor was born in 1982 in Antalya, Turkey, and graduated from Anadolu University’s Faculty of Fine Arts Sculpture Department in 2005. He has been creating sand sculptures since 2006 and has completed works in many countries, including Portugal, Turkey and the U.S. He also works with clay, terracota, iron, stone and wood, and he uses painting and ready-made objects in some of his projects. Just this year, Uysal earned his master’s degree from the Sculpture Program at Marmara University in Istanbul, Turkey, where he completed a dissertation titled “Contemporary Art and Ecosystems.” He currently works as a lecturer at Trakya University in the Department of Sculpture in Edirne, Turkey. courtesy of H. Since his first professional sand sculpture project in 1990, Dan Belcher has created numerous projects across the United States and throughout the world. Having placed first at the North American Masters Invitational competition in both in 2008 and 2009, he is this year’s Artist in Residence — and only the second to have that title in the history of the Arts in Action contest (the first being Carl Jara). If a sculptor places first two years in a row, then that person returns the following year on a stipend and does not participate in the general judging. The artist is still eligible for the People’s Choice and Sculptor’s Choice awards. Dan has 13 World Championships to his credit, including a record three Solo World Championships in a row, the 2006 Doubles Championship and nine Team Championships. He is the only sculptor to have won all three contests, the only sculptor to win two championships in the same year, and the only sculptor to win two Sculptors’ Choice awards at the Tournament of Champions. Dan has a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture from Kansas State University. He continues to also work in the architecture/ engineering field as an urban designer in his hometown of St. Louis, Mo.

Carl Jara returns from Cleveland, Ohio, for another year of competition. A participant since the first North American Masters Invitational competition, he placed second at the 2009 contest. He is the reigning Solo Champion for the World Championship of Sand Sculpting. He was the Arts in Action competition’s first Artist in Residence — a title bestowed on those sculptors who win first place two years in a row. Carl began sculpting sand in 1991, learning under the instruction of sand sculpting veteran Tom Morrison of Akron, Ohio. After graduating from the Meyers School of Art at the University of Akron, he set out to carve a name for himself in the sand sculpting world, teaming up with some of the biggest names in the industry. His first competition came in 1998 at the World Championship in Harrison Hot Springs, B.C., where he won a bronze medal in the solo category. Carl holds nine World Championship medals, more than three dozen medals from other contests and has been twice featured on Sand Blasters on the Travel Channel. In addition to sculpting, he is the exhibits artisan/technician at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. His work can be seen at www.artcleveland.com.

The North American Masters Invitational sand sculpture competition in Port Angeles is one of the top-rated contests in North America. It is also now a qualifier contest for the World Championship of Sand Sculpting (www.wcsandsculpting.com) in Federal Way, Wash. Whoever wins here is automatically guaranteed a spot. Sand sculptors will have three days (Thursday-Saturday) to construct a sculpture reflecting this year’s theme of “Legends of Science Fiction.” All the action takes place at Hollywood Beach, near the Red Lion Hotel and Port Angeles City Pier. The sculptures can be seen from the pier at no charge. Admission to the sand sculpture “gallery” to see the art up close is $1 for adults and free for children 12 and younger (accompanied by an adult). People can cast votes for their favorite sculptures for 25¢ a vote. The artist whose sculpture receives the most votes will receive the People’s Choice award. A panel of judges will select the top three winners for awards. In addition, the sand artists will also vote on a sculpture for the Sculptor’s Choice award. The top three winners plus the Sculptor’s Choice and People’s Choice winners are invited back to compete the following year. This year’s lineup of artists includes:

She has since carved multiple times in Europe, competed in the U.S. and Canada, and been on Travel Channel’s SandBlasters 2008, all while managing to graduate in 2008 from the University of Southern California. Among her awards are second place at the Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition in Parksville, B.C., in 2008, and first place at the North American Sand Sculpting Championship in Virginia Beach, Va., in 2008. This is her second time at Arts in Action.

Jeff Strong Sand sculpting is a hobby for Jeff Strong, who works as a computer programmer for the University of Puget Sound. He began sand sculpting nine years ago when he was introduced to master sculptor Michael Velling, who invited him to join the team “Hard Sand Cafe.” He refined his skill at many beach contests on the Washington and Oregon coasts, and was part of the “World’s Tallest” project in Port Angeles in 2002. In April 2010, he partnered with sculptor Katie Corning to win Second Place Duo at the Texas SandFest for “Dream Journey,” featuring a child dreaming of flying through space in his toy wagon.

Ian Morris, a sidewalk artist from Victoria, B.C., returns to Arts in Action for a third year with his “anamorphic chalk art” skills. When viewed through a camera from a certain angle, the chalk illustration appears amazingly realistic and 3D. Viewed from a different angle, the image becomes distorted. Last year, Morris created the image of an orca whale leaping from the water. This year, he plans to create artwork going the other direction — something “looking into the ground.” The design will again be created in front of the Conrad Dyar Memorial Fountain at First and Laurel streets.

Seven years ago, after competing in a dragon boat race for the local maritime festival, Sue McGrew of Tacoma found herself in a sand pile next to a demo sculpture playing with much younger children. The display sculptor, Bert Adams, noticed her enthusiasm and invited her to come back the next day and learn how to compact the sand like a pro. A year later, the summer after her high school graduation, Sue landed her first commercial job in Zeebrugge, Belgium.
