All of the families agree that without the support of their loved ones, they wouldn’t be able to do what they do, year after year. “It’s not the thing,” Gellor said. “But it is a critical part of how the whole thing comes together to get to the end product.” Both Bambi Lowell and Smith agree, “there has to be family involvement,” and a general tolerance of those family members not directly involved with the event as households are taken over with designing and planning, sometimes for weeks or months at a time. >> continued on Page 4

Holidays and family have always gone together. And since its inception, the annual Festival of Trees event has focused on bringing families together to celebrate the season. That concept not only applies to the various activities throughout the weekend, but also shows by the numerous families who work together to bring the festivities to life. Festival of Trees is truly a family affair. From sisters designing trees together to parents whose children follow in their footsteps to carry on the traditions, the family ties are the strings that bind the Festival of Trees together into a magical celebration, and the largest fundraising event of the year for the Olympic Medical Center Foundation. Olympic Medical Center Foundation has given close to $5 million toward improving health care at Olympic Medical Center and on the North Olympic Peninsula — close to $3 million of that since 2007. Much of that money has come through the annual fundraising efforts of the Festival of Trees. But it takes a “family” to bring this event to life. “Volunteers are the backbone of this event — we have over 250 of them for Festival of Trees,” said Olympic Medical Center Foundation Director Bruce Skinner. “No one has promoted the spirit of the event like the designers and others who have gotten involved as a family.” Many of the families have grown up with the Festival of Trees tradition. One of those families who have been a mainstay with the event is the Teitzels. Cindy Teitzel started her tenure the second year of the event. After attending the first year, she decided “I can do a tree.” And as time went on, Teitzel took on more and more responsibilities. And with that, drew upon the support of her family to help her in that endeavor. Starting at a ripe age of 8 years old, Cindy’s, son Jake Roorda, began decorating alongside his mother. Cindy’s sister, Laurie Stewart, has chosen a somewhat more hidden role as a sponsor through her workplace, Sound Bank. However, Stewart has helped on many trees, right along with her sisters. “We gear our lives toward this event every year,” Teitzel said. For 24 years, Festival of Trees would not have run as smoothly without the leadership and dedication of former cochair Bill Gellor. The second year of Festival of Trees, Gellor started working with facilities, along
with Jerry Hendricks. From there, Gellor teamed up with Hendricks to cochair the Festival of Trees event for many years before handing over the reins to current chair Mary Hebert. Gellor remains committed to the event, vowing to stay involved. And to help in that commitment, his daughter Molly Smith is cochair of the annual Teddy Bear Tea. Smith said, aside from growing up with the Festival of Trees, her involvement arose from being approached by Mary Irwin to take over the leadership for the Teddy Bear Tea. Smith said she and cochair Lindsay Fox walked away with a “how-to” manual and a dedication to carry on the tradition of the event. This will be Smith and Fox’s fifth Former Festival of Trees cochair Bill Gellor and his daughter, Molly Smith, are one of the local year at the helm. families who consider volunteering for the annual fundraising event a holiday tradition. “I had been to the Teddy Bear Tea,” Smith said. “And I was present in and around the festival for years. This is a fun way to get involved in a great community event.” Bambi Lowell enjoyed decorating theme trees at her house and in 1997 saw an advertisement in the paper for the Festival of Trees and she jumped at the opportunity. Lowell has designed trees ever since, and even served as the event’s design chair prior to current chair, Sherri Phillips. Lowell’s first tree was a raffle tree and she has designed trees every year since, even tackling three trees one year. “I love it,” Lowell said. When Lowell started in 1997, her son Tharen Lowell was five years old. The tree really comes alive.”

And because it takes place over the Thanksgiving weekend, it requires an additional level of family involvement. “Thanksgiving is devoted to Festival of Trees,” Teitzel said. “Being thankful for Festival of Trees, and it’s a cool thing that the holiday is surrounded by that community and family event.” Teitzel says this year is even more memorable because the event is honoring her mother Mary Lou Teitzel, a longtime supporter of the Festival of Trees, who passed away last year. “Mom was at the event as we decorated,” Teitzel said. “Usually criticizing what we did. Sometimes we would have to decorate on opposite sides of the gym from her.” Tharen Lowell remembers growing up in the event, “doing little things for mom until I could do it on my own.” “It’s more meaningful to me when I see cousins, aunts, uncles and even close friends get involved and you see everyone come together.” Smith agreed, “The big thing is seeing family members getting their interest piqued and a curiosity of finding ways to get involved.”
INTO THE FUTURE
Festival of Trees will continue to grow and flourish through family involvement, which encourages new additions to the event. “Family is the ‘breath and blood’ of Festival of Trees,” said Bambi Lowell. “It’s what’s most important and the only way the event will continue to go forward.” She said families help encourage new blood by bringing in friends and, in turn, their families. Gellor said there is always room for volunteers to join Festival of Trees. “We have a very eclectic group that participates, from young to old,” Gellor said. “And if you are looking for a big involvement or small, there is “something for everyone.” For details about participating in the festival, phone the Olympic Medical Center Foundation at 360-417-7144.
Festival, ‘The Nutcracker’ are both family traditions
Originally a flop, “The Nutcracker” has become an international Christmas family tradition, inviting young and old into its magical world. The fabled ballet was adapted by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky from E.T.A. Hoffmann’s story “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.” The first performance in the United States was Christmas Eve 1944, by the San Francisco Ballet. After the enormous success of this production, San Francisco Ballet has presented “The Nutcracker” every Christmas Eve and throughout the winter season. The New York City Ballet gave its inaugural performance in 1954. The tradition of performing the complete ballet at Christmas eventually spread to the rest of the United States beginning in the 1960s.

As the clock strikes midnight strange things begin to happen. Clara begins shrinking as her beautiful Christmas tree grows high above her. The toys around the tree come to life while the room fills with an army of mice, led by the fierce Mouse King. As the Nutcracker awakens, he leads his army of toy soldiers into battle with the mice. The Mouse King corners the Nutcracker and battles him one-on-one. The Nutcracker seems to be no match for the Mouse King. The Nutcracker and his army can go on no longer and are captured by the mice and their King. Clara makes a final daring charge throwing her slipper at the Mouse King, hitting him square on the head. The Mouse King drops to the floor and the mice run away, carrying off their leader’s lifeless body.

THE FIGHT SCENE
It is Christmas Eve at the Stahlbaum house — a large and grand house with the most beautiful tree imaginable. The Stahlbaums are hosting their annual Christmas party, welcoming the arrival of their family and friends. The children, Clara and Fritz, are dancing and playing as they welcome their friends too. The party grows festive with music and dance as godfather Drosselmeyer arrives, drawing attention as he presents two life-sized dolls. They are the delight of the party, each taking a turn to dance. The children begin to open gifts when Drosselmeyer presents his to Clara and Fritz. Although his gift to Fritz is quite nice, he gives Clara a beautiful nutcracker that becomes the hit of the party. Fritz becomes jealous and, having a bit more spunk than a boy should have, grabs The Nutcracker from Clara and promptly breaks it. Clara is heartbroken looking on as Drosselmeyer quickly repairs The Nutcracker with a handkerchief he magically draws from the air. As the evening grows late, the guests depart and the Stahlbaum family retires for the evening. Clara, worried about her beloved Nutcracker, sneaks back to the tree to

The annual Festival of Trees is a three-day celebration for the Olympic Medical Center Foundation and the Port Angeles Exchange Club. All events are held at the Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St. in Port Angeles. There is a little something for everyone during this year’s Festival of Trees weekend: Friday, Nov. 27— Teddy Bear Tea, sponsored by Swain’s Family Foundation, for parents and children, 10 a.m. and noon. $10 per person. Friday, Nov. 27 — Festival of Trees Gala, sponsored by Sequim Health and Rehabilitation, 5:30 p.m. Buffet dinner, tree auction, silent auction and dancing with music. Tickets cost $100 per person. Saturday, Nov. 28 — Family Days Breakfast, 8:30 a.m. Includes sit-down breakfast. $10 per adult, $6 per child. Limited tickets will be available at the door. Saturday, Nov. 28 and Sunday, Nov. 29 — Family Days, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. The candle tree is to honor those with cancer and their families. Iris’ daughter, Vonnie, died of brain cancer, she lost a cousin to brain cancer and her husband, Kenneth, has leukemia and prostate cancer. Unfortunately, Iris passed away this past month.
It seems appropriate we should say God bless you to all the families that are affected. On top of the tree is a LED lantern candle, on the tree itself LED lights, the main colors are red green white and gold. Lori Seelyeand Jan McGee volunteered to do Iris’ tree in her memory.

During this era, children’s presents were not wrapped, rather hung on the tree for ornaments. Candles were used for lights, and only lit during the Christmas celebration. Not everyone had a Christmas tree, so most were either in the school or the town hall. A much simpler era portrayed by this vintage tree.

Port Angeles Exchange Club produces Family Days Breakfast story by MARY RUPPRECHT “All in the Family” — the Festival of Trees event truly connects family with community in which we live. And that connection is especially important during the holiday season. The Port Angeles Exchange Club nurtures that sense of community through its mission to promote the values of freedom and citizenship throughout the year, not just during the holidays. The funds raised during the Family Days events directly assist the Exchange Club in its endeavors. Family Days runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday Nov. 28, and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday Nov. 29. The Port Angeles Exchange Club partners with the Olympic Medical Center Foundation to sponsor the annual public access to the holiday event. “The ideals of Americanism and citizenship come together in the sense of community which is promoted through the Festival of Trees and Family Days events,” said Cookie Kalfur of the Exchange Club of Port Angeles. Last year brought family involvement to a new level as the traditional Senior Breakfast opened its doors to a broader audience and is now the Family Days Breakfast on Saturday morning. Kalfur said that with the Thanksgiving holiday geared toward bringing families together, it only made sense to encourage a multigenerational attendance. Now grandparents can sit next to children and grandchildren for breakfast, all while enjoying the magical setting created by the Festival of Trees event. The whole family can sit at the same table, said Kalfur, and enjoy a great breakfast, and then take in the amazing decorating feats put together by the team of tree designers. All of this while enjoying festive holiday music and entertainment. Tickets for the breakfast are available on pre-sale at the Olympic Medical Center Foundation office, 1015 Georgiana St. in Port Angeles. Tickets cost $13 per adult and $6 for children ages five
to 12, and free for children five years old and younger. There may be limited tickets available at the door. Family Days features a variety of live entertainment both Saturday and Sunday, in addition to the viewing of the trees. The holiday extravaganza features dancers from the Lower Elwha Klallam tribe, the Community Singers and many other local talents. The Port Angeles Exchange Club is a branch of one of the oldest service clubs in America. The Exchange Club dedicates itself to supporting social programs, which aid in preventing child abuse.

The Exchange Club also participates in patriotic exercises, including placing American flags in public places during holidays and also awarding scholarships.
