2014 Festival of Trees: ‘Believe’ “Believe” — it is the efforts and passion of many local volunteers that ensures the success of many community endeavors. And one of the main indicators of a strong community is the availability of quality health care and the commitment to providing care to the public. Olympic Medical Center Foundation has given more than $4.6 million to better health care at Olympic Medical Center and on the North Olympic Peninsula, with more than $2.4 million of that since 2007. Much of that money has come through the annual fundraising efforts at the Festival of Trees. “The Festival of Trees is the largest fundraising event of the year for the Olympic Medical Center Foundation,” said Olympic Medical Center Foundation President Karen Rogers. “We expect to net over $100,000 at the Festival this year.” The success of the event lies not only in the support from the community, but also with the tireless dedication of the host of people who come together to stage the weekend extravaganza. Last year marked a changing of the guard in leadership as longtime chairmen Jerry Hendricks and Bill Gellor handed over the reins to new chairwoman Mary Hebert. Hendricks and Gellor had been co-chairmen for Festival of Trees since 1998, and they were confident Hebert would continue the tradition of leading the event with the passion and dedication to community and providing quality health care on the Peninsula. “Mary has the capability of moving the event forward into the future,” Gellor said. Hendricks echoed that by saying, “I am very comfortable that she’s capable of providing the leadership it needs.” Olympic Medical Center Foundation Executive Director Bruce Skinner added, “We are very fortunate to have Mary as the chair of Festival of Trees. She is a great leader and very organized, which is very
important when you have to stage an event that has so many activities as a part of it.” Hebert has a long history with the Festival of Trees event, starting with working on the Teddy Bear Tea when it was held at Peninsula College. “It was a natural fit for me as an extension of my beliefs in the education and health of the children in this community,” Hebert said. Hebert, a longtime educator, said when her husband Harry became involved with the festival, it became a family commitment. “We are able to continue our commitment as a couple to this work in the community that is only possible through volunteer efforts,” she said. Hebert continued to be active with the Teddy Bear Tea, even including a stint at Mrs. Claus, but then started transitioning into bigger roles with the event. She moved from the Teddy Bear Tea into the Wreath Design committee, and then eventually took over emcee duties for the Friday Night Gala. “I wanted to volunteer my time to make a difference in this community,” said Hebert. “Olympic Medical Center provides services to everyone in this rural community and the Festival of Trees event is the vehicle where individuals, businesses and the community at large come together to support a public hospital which finds it necessary to supplement federal funds with community resources such as those provided through the Olympic Medical Center Foundation.” After a one year as co-chair role under Gellor and Hendricks, Hebert led the event last year. “A Dickens of a Christmas” was the largest fundraiser of the year, bringing in more than $100,000 through sponsorships and community support. The weekend not only ushered in a new event chair, but also a couple new elements and one redesigned event, a trend which Hebert hopes to continue this year as well. “We are trying to add new elements to the event each year,” Hebert said.
Harry and Mary Hebert. Mary is the new Festival of Trees chairwoman.
Last year, Hebert said Friday night’s Silent Auction was increased, with bidders not only able to vie for the 4-foot decorated trees and wonderful decorated wreaths, but also many other items donated by local businesses and individuals. Friday night’s Gala also included a new dessert auction, where individuals and/or tables could bid on delectable treats like cheesecake, pies and even cherries jubilee prepared table side. Saturday evening’s new event, the Port Angeles High School All Class Reunion and Basketball Tournament, brought in alumni from throughout the years to reconnect with friends both old and new. This year, Hebert is excited about new Event Designer Kathy Skinner, who developed the magical Polar Express theme. “This will be an exciting image for young people,” Hebert said.“But will also set a sophisticated backdrop for the evening gala.” >> continued on Page 3

DESIGNING THROUGH THE YEARS
It is the designers and volunteers who really bring the event to life, according to Hebert. “The passion of the designers comes through in their talents as expression in their design.” Skinner adds that “the tree designers are the backbone of Festival of Trees — the financial and visual success of the event totally depends on them. We have been very fortunate to have some of the best designers of any tree festival in the country.” For longtime designer, Marcia Logan, inspiration can come from just about anywhere. Logan has designed trees for 15 years with just a few breaks over the years. She credits her friend Terry McDonald who was already a designer for getting her involved. “I was overwhelmed by the creativity of people and piqued by the challenge of doing my own tree.” She says she now looks at the world through the eyes of a designer, often thinking of ideas two to three years ahead of time. “Many times you don’t know where it’s coming from,” Logan said.

“Sometimes it may be one single item that I design an entire tree around. You never know which design will grab someone’s attention.” Tree Designer Committee Chair Sherry Phillips echoes Logan’s comment. “The mind goes crazy with ideas,” Phillips said. “But designers also have to remember the tree is going into someone’s home, so there has to be some kind of Christmas tie-in, regardless of the theme.” This vision doesn’t just apply to veteran designers. In just her second year as a tree designer, Cindy Schlaffman, who credits her longtime friend Phillips for getting her started as a designer, is already on the lookout for future tree ideas. And she adds that her inspiration can come from the smallest thing such as an antique Silver Tea Set for last year’s “Silver and Lace” tree to a day at Lake Crescent which leads to her current tree design. “I never pictured myself as creative,” Schlaffman said. “But I get to turn a tree into fantasy.’ Once a designer is hooked, what brings them back year after year is the sense of family and welcoming atmosphere surrounding the festive event. >> continued on Page 4

“Everybody is helpful and really gets along,” Schlaffman said. Phillips adds that designers often will look out for items for other designer’s trees. “We work well together in a collaborative effort.” And when scheduling and the frenetic pace kicks up during setup, the designers really pull together to make everything beautiful. “The first hour, you can feel the energy in the air as designers greet each other and get all of their decorations stationed in the Vern Burton Center,” Logan said. “It is an emotional and physical energy in the room.” The designers agree that they enjoy the camaraderie that they all share, but they also recognize the dedication of all of the volunteers with the Festival of Trees events. Hebert emphasizes that Festival of Trees would not be possible without the tireless work from the numerous volunteers. “Transitioning a gym into an elegant festival takes a lot of effort and support,” Hebert extends special thanks to the Hurricane Ridge Ski Team, the Port Angeles High School Wrestling Team, the Olympic Peninsula Rowing Club and the Dry Creek PTO for their assistance during the weekend events. “Many of the designers throughout the years have a personal commitment to the Festival of Trees and the Olympic Medical Center Foundation because of the support services it has provided to their families; from pediatrics to geriatrics, and to cancer which has no age.” Logan adds, “Because the money raised stays here, someone you know may be benefitting from the event. “It validates all of the effort and the emotions in a unique way to support the community.” Hebert adds that there are always places for new faces. “My goal was to increase volunteers,” said Hebert. “Longtime participants are important for the sustainability of the event, but I would encourage those who have attended past events to give back by volunteering.”
PENINSULA DAILY NEWS
Phillips agrees, saying the volunteers are dedicated to the event and what it means to the community. “We welcome anyone with open arms and encouragement,” said Phillips. “There are always lots of jobs.”
The story behind the Festival of Trees theme: Polar Express

He opens the box and discovers that it is the bell, delivered by Santa who found it on the seat of his sleigh. When the boy rings the bell, both he and his sister marvel at the beautiful sound. His parents, however, are unable to hear the bell and remark that it must be broken “At one time, most of my friends could hear the bell, but as years passed, it fell silent for all of them. Though I’ve grown old, the bell still rings for me, as it does for all who truly believe.”

Port Angeles High School All Class Reunion and Tournament scheduled Following on the heels of last year’s successful inaugural Port Angeles High School All Class High School Reunion and Basketball Tournament, 2014 pays tribute to two different standout teams from Port Angeles High School history and welcomes back alumni from all eras to mix and mingle in the midst of a festive weekend. The All Class Reunion and Basketball Tournament are open to alumni from all classes through the years, and is a great opportunity to see friends from all over who are home for the holidays in an informal gathering. The basketball tournament tips off at the Port Angeles High School at around 9 a.m. with games throughout the day. Any class or combination of classes can put together a team to participate. The only qualification for playing is that you are a PAHS graduate. You don’t even need to have been a member of a PAHS team to play. Tournament Chair Joe Gladfelter called the event a great way to “build a sense of community among the alumni.”
Gladfelter adds that last year’s event was neat to see all ages of participants, whether still living in the community or just home for the holidays, coming together for a fun event. After the tournament concludes, participants and alumni can reconnect at the All Class Reunion and Dance at the Vern Burton Community Center starting at 7:30 p.m. The event features dancing to the well-known Jimmy Hoffman Band. There also will be a no-host bar and light snacks. This year, special recognition will be paid to two PAHS basketball teams for their achievements. Special tribute goes to the 1989 girls basketball team that finished fifth in the state tournament, and the 1966 boys basketball team that finished second in the state. For more information on participating in the tournament, or about tickets for the reunion, which are available for $20, contact Olympic Medical Center Foundation at 360-417-7144.

Port Angeles Exchange Club produces Family Days Breakfast Festival of Trees has always been about helping the community we live in. And family and community go together during the holidays. The Port Angeles Exchange Club fosters that sense of community through its mission to promote the values of freedom and citizenship not only during the holidays, but throughout the year. The funds raised during Family Days directly assists the Port Angeles Exchange Club in its mission. Family Days run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30. The Exchange Club partners with the Olympic Medical Center Foundation to produce the annual public viewing at the holiday event. “The ideals of Americanism and citizenship come together in the sense of community which is promoted through the Festival of Trees and Family Days events,” said Cookie Kalfur of the Exchange Club of Port Angeles. Last year saw a new nod toward the family as the Festival of Trees weekend turned attention to family and featured a Family Days Breakfast which was previously known as the Senior Breakfast on Saturday morning. The event is now called Family Days Breakfast and welcomes family members of all ages. Kalfur says that the Thanksgiving holiday weekend typically brings families together, and the new Family Days Breakfast welcomes everyone from children to grandparents to dine in the Festival of Trees splendor.
