Lavender has made quite a name for itself in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley. The fragrant purple plant draws tens of thousands of visitors each year to Sequim for the largest lavender event in North America. This year there is even more lavender and activities to go around. Lavender Weekend runs Friday, July 15 through Sunday, July 17. It includes the original Sequim Lavender Festival, now in its 15th year, and a new event — the Sequim Lavender Farm Faire. The Festival offers a free tour of six working farms and regional attractions (shown on Pages 4-5) and a vibrant street fair (Page 8). The new Farm Faire also has a farm tour (shown on Pages 6 and 7) that costs $15 ($10 if purchased in advance) and provides bus access to each of its farms. Five of the lavender farms on this new tour were on the original Festival’s tour last year. The Farm Faire’s main Sequim location, dubbed “Lavender in the Park,” will be at Carrie Blake Park. Turn to Page 12 to learn what’s happening there throughout the weekend. Buses for the Farm Faire tour will leave from this new location at Carrie Blake Park. In addition to the Sequim Lavender Festival and the Sequim Lavender Farm Faire, there are several community events planned to keep visitors busy — turn to Pages 14 and 15 to learn about some of those. The Sequim-Dungeness Valley is cradled in the “rain shadow” of the Olympic Mountains and has an ideal microclimate for growing lavender. With less than 20 inches of rain per year, the climate is similar to the Provence region of France, where lavender thrives. Because of Sequim’s unique conditions and two groups of dedicated farmers, the lavender of Sequim has received worldwide recognition for its superior quality and fragrance. Farmers from the Sequim Lavender Growers Association and the Sequim Lavender Farmers Association have more than 200 years of combined experience cultivating lavender, developing the best planting and growing practices and creating superb lavender products. Join them during Lavender Weekend to celebrate the beauty of the Sequim-Dungeness Valley and its favorite plant.

he original Sequim Lavender Festival celebrates its 15th year during the 2011 Lavender Weekend. Produced and managed by the member-growers of the Sequim Lavender Growers Association, the Lavender Festival has expanded its offerings this year to include activities and regional attractions that provide fun for the whole family. All of the festival’s seven farms on tour, as well as four regional attractions are shown on Page 5. With map in hand, leisurely drive at your own pace to visit the farms. Each farm on the festival’s tour provides convenient parking, and entrance is free. Speak with friendly lavender growers, visit their boutique shops where you can purchase fresh-cut bouquets and lavender products from the original creators. Or wander through the fields to pick your own lavender bundle. The Street Fair (highlighted on Page 8) will feature more growers who bring their farm to market.

There are more than 100 varieties of lavender growing in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley. The drought-tolerant plant likes a good-draining soil that keeps it from getting its feet wet (in other words, you should never over water it!). Because it has so many uses, lavender has been referred to as “the Swiss army knife” of herbs. Here are a few of the plant’s many uses: A heAling herb: Lavender has been used for centuries as a medicine to prevent infections in wounds, it soothes as a tea, and heals in creams and oils.

CulinAry mAgiC: For centuries great chefs have used lavender as an ingredient in cooking. The French use it in breads, desserts and marinades. It is also an integral ingredient of the classic French seasoning, Herbs de Provence, which is a blending of various Mediterranean herbs.

Lost Mountain Lavender

Cooking demonstrations are the featured program on Sunday at five of the farms on tour. Lavender is a fantastic herb for cooking, but getting it just right is important so local chefs show you how to use lavender in your cooking. New this year, Sunshine Lavender & Herb Farm will be running cooking demonstrations all weekend. Go to www.sequimlavenderfarms.org for specific details, times and locations for each of the cooking demonstrations plus more information about Lavender in the Park.

Explore hidden back roads and lush valleys as you discover some of the finest small, family-run wineries in Washington. Since most produce less than 2,000 cases of wine a year, many of the wines are in very limited production and are challenging to find outside of the communities where they are made. The Olympic Peninsula Wineries invite visitors to wind their way through beautiful fields of lavender en route to tasting some of the region’s handcrafted wines. Eight artisan wineries located in Port Townsend, Chimacum and Port Angeles will open their doors from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 15-17. While children are allowed in the tasting rooms, you must be 21 or over to participate in wine tasting. Go to www.olympicpeninsulawineries.org for more information.

artwork Classic painting chosen for the faire’s 2011 poster A painting by local artist Patricia Taynton serves as the official 2011 Sequim Lavender Farm Faire artwork. The art will be featured on the Faire’s posters, T-shirts, advertising and other promotional materials. “The classic painting is in the tradition of Sequim lavender farm art,” says Scott Nagel, executive director of the Sequim Lavender Farm Faire. “We are excited to present this vibrant new image to the thousands of worldwide tourists who will come to visit our beautiful and iconic farms this year.” Patricia is a “photorealist” who paints in water-

‘Boomer with an attitude’ graces 2011 festival poster Posters for the 15th Sequim Lavender Festival are graced with artwork by Chris Witkowski. The poster features a woman in a flamboyant headdress sitting in a chair in a lavender field reading a festival schedule. Her name, chosen by the festival’s president, Terry Stolz, is Mona. “She’s a boomer with an attitude” who is not based on any real person, says Paul Jendrucko, who is handling media relations for the Sequim Lavender Growers Association’s festival. “It’s the tourist who comes in and wants to enjoy the fields and fragrance of lavender, and she’s reading the guide about where to go next, what to do next,” he says. “She’s our poster child.” Festival Director Mary Jendrucko and Donna Green of lavender-growing Greenhill Farm will make headwear resembling the lavender-adorned headdress Mona wears. Not only do they plan to wear them during the festival, but they also will have a few for sale at the Sequm Lavender Festival’s food, music, lavender products and crafts fair on Fir Street between Sequim Avenue and Third Avenue. “We’re not going to make lots of them,” Mary Jendrucko says. “It’ll just be a fun thing.” The poster artist, Witkowski, is a longtime favorite in Port Townsend who now lives in northern California. She is known for vibrant paintings of people with a bounty of flowers and vegetables cascading from lavish headwear — such as “Flora,” the image adopted by the Port Townsend Farmers Market. Witkowski “has brought the importance of local agriculture to us through the viewers’ eyes in vivid brush strokes,” Paul Jendrucko says. “She is the perfect fit for what we are trying to say this year: Lavender has a place in farming and in our farming history and touches our personal lives for a relaxing and enjoyable experience,” he says. The $10 posters and $5 buttons for the festival organized by the growers’ association can be found at the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce, 1192 E. Washington St.; the lavender growers’ festival office in the back of 237 N. Sequim Ave.; or online at www.lavenderfestival.com. The poster — as well as posters from prior years — will also be available at the Festival’s Street Fair merchandise booth. “We expect our poster art to be the most popular ever and plan on selling out,” Paul Jendrucko says. “We will keep ‘Mona’ around. She holds an important place in our festival history and plans for the future.”

Two distinct bands will be the featured entertainers for the Sequim Lavender Farm Faire at Carrie Blake Park on Friday and Saturday evening. Creme Tangerine, a five-member band based out of Kirkland, returns to Sequim on Friday, July 15 to re-create Beatles’ classics in a concert filled with energy and humor. Over the years, Creme Tangerine has been a regular feature at events throughout the Pacific Northwest — including the 2010 Sequim Lavender Festival when more than 2,000 people packed the outdoor amphitheater at the James Center for the Performing Arts at Carrie Blake Park. On Jan. 30, 2009, the band made headlines with its re-enactment of the Beatles’ legendary London rooftop concert on its 40th anniversary at Seattle’s Pike Place Market. Fans packed the concert and were treated to a repertoire of the same songs the Beatles played at their rooftop concert. On Saturday, July 16, Blue Rooster will bring some foot-stomping country blues and ragtime to the stage. Cort Armstrong leads the band with his repertoire of borrowed and original tunes, reviving the songs that shook the floors of old mountain
