of the family’s other restaurant, Alma Nove. After that, he started working in kitchens and as a caterer, honing his craft and eventually opening the aforementioned Alma Nove, named after his mother and her nine (nove) children. It was shortly thereafter that he got into the gourmet burger biz, and thus Wahlburgers was born. The family matriarch, Alma, plays predominantly in the life of her children. (I mean, she really has to. Someone needs to control this rowdy bunch of brothers!) She’s seen it all, though, and nothing phases her — especially after nine children. Where she used to be a bank teller and a nurse’s aide, she now

works as a greeter and hostess at both Wahlburgers and Alma Nove, bringing with her a great sense of humor and exuberance. Of course, while Paul may have the official title of “head chef” at both restaurants, it’s quite clear who really runs the show. For season 2, two more Wahlberg brothers are thrown into the fray as well as a host of other special guests. With Donnie and Mark focusing more on other creative endeavors (but don’t worry, they’ll be around!), eldest brother Arthur and Bob, the seventh of the nine Wahlbergs, will be stopping by the restaurant to lend a hand to the mayhem that’s sure to ensue. Wahlberg nephew Brandon is also set to swing by, as will New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski. As the restaurant continues to grow and burgers fly out fast and furious, A&E’s “Wahlburgers” surges ahead, keeping viewers engaged in one of Boston’s most famous families. Catch the season 2 premiere of the hit Emmy-nominated reality series Wednesday, Aug. 13, on A&E. Donnie Wahlberg, his mother, Alma, and Johnny “Drama” Alves as seen in “Wahlburgers.”

stars on screen

hollywood q&a By Adam Thomlison TV Media Q: Which “Hee Haw” performer was killed during a robbery at his home? A: David Akeman, known better on “Hee Haw” and elsewhere as Stringbean, was one of the most popular stars of that show’s early years and of bluegrass country music, before being killed in a robbery in 1973. The cabin where he lived was isolated, and rumors had long circulated that he distrusted banks, preferring to keep his money in cash, stashed in his house and in his pockets. All this made him seem like an easy mark for cousins Doug and John Brown. Having ransacked Stringbean’s cabin near Ridgetop, Tenn., and not found his fabled stash, the Browns waited for Stringbean and his wife, Estelle, to return from an evening out before murdering them. In the end, the Browns got away with only Stringbean’s chainsaw and a few firearms. They were arrested not long after. A roll of molding bills totaling $20,000 was supposedly found in the cabin decades later, though that could be just another rumor (it’s the kind of story that encourages them). Stringbean had pretaped a number of episodes of “Hee Haw,” and though he died in November 1973, his final appearance was on March 23, 1974. His longtime musical partner and fellow banjo great Grandpa Jones remained with the show until its final season in 1992. As well as being a collaborator and friend, Jones was also Stringbean’s neighbor, and tragically was the one to discover his body. Music writer Peter Cooper said the murders of Stringbean and Estelle “marked the end of country music’s innocent era.” Q: I thought I heard Cedric the Entertainer say on a talk show that he is leaving as host of “Millionaire.” Is that true? And if so, who is going to be taking over as host? A: Cedric the Entertainer’s curiosity only lasted a season, and he no longer wants to know “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” Fortunately, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” star Terry Crews now wants to find out. Crews will take over from Cedric, who in turn took over the popular quiz show last year from long-standing host Meredith Vieira, who quit after 11 seasons. Cedric cited an increasingly busy schedule along with the show’s plan to start filming in Connecticut (it currently films in New York) as reasons for his departure. “With the many television and film projects that I have going on which shoot and promote in various parts of the country, a production base in Connecticut would make it quite difficult to maneuver the many moving parts on my plate,” he said in a notso-entertaining official statement. Hopefully, Crews’ run on “Millionaire” will last longer. “Variety” magazine reports that the show’s schedule will accommodate his commitments to “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” (so no worries there). “Variety” also cited unnamed sources saying that ABC got him to sign on to “Millionaire” by promising an even higher-profile hosting gig in the future. Apart from appearing as Sgt. Jeffords on “Brooklyn,” Crews also appears in the “Expendables” film franchise and previously starred on the hit sitcom “Everybody Hates Chris.”

still several months out from this exciting broadcast, one of Hollywood’s most respected actors has already signed on. Christopher Walken has come on board for the classic story of Peter Pan, the little boy who ran away to Neverland where he’ll never grow old. Walken, though, won’t be sprinkling fairy dust or making rooster calls — he’ll be playing the villainous pirate Captain Hook. Walken got his start as a child actor way back in the 1950s, and unlike far too many actors who get their start at such a young age, he translated his early success into a full-blown career. Following a stint as a circus lion tamer when he was a teenager (seriously!), he went on to star in a hugely diverse array of movies, including “A View to a Kill” (1985), “Batman Returns” (1992), “Pulp Fiction” (1994), “Sleepy Hollow” (1999), “Catch Me If You Can” (2002), “Click” (2006) and “Hairspray” (2007). He’s no stranger to theater, either, making him the prefect candidate to play Captain Hook. He’s performed on Broadway in “The Lion in Winter” (1966), “James Joyce’s The Dead” (2000), “A Beheading in Spokane” (2010) as well as countless other Shakespeare plays. Watch for more casting announcements as we get closer to “Peter Pan Live!” premiering Thursday, Dec. 4, on NBC.
