Taurus SHO-s its size and speed “Wow, that car is big.” Yeah, it’s big. And it’s fast, too. You can’t blame people for missing the not so obvious. All they see when they look at a Ford ROB BEINTEMA Taurus is a full-size Metroland family car, albeit a Media handsome and stylish Carguide Magazine one in latest generation livery, with modern lines and sleek styling. But this particular version was the Taurus SHO, and beneath its understated Clark Kent-like exterior beats the heart of a hot rod. There are two approaches to performance design. There’s the usual sports car way of doing things – big spoilers and wings, sharp angles, road-scraping skirts, flash and dash and plenty of design braggadocio to advertise the power and handling abilities of the car in question. But the SHO takes the stealthier route of the “sleeper” cars of the past, keeping to the shadows, innocuous and disguised in anonymity. In the bad ‘ol days drivers would even etch their car exteriors with battery acid, adding surface rust and dents to further lull opponents into a false sense of security. And most of those opponents would be left stunned at the start line with a surprised “Oh!” on their lips, peering through the tire
The Ford Taurus SHO, is a full-size sedan with a difference. Under that family car exterior beats the heart of a hotrod – a 3.5-litre twin turbocharged V6 making 365 hp. Add in top-ofthe-line perks and luxuries and you have the ultimate flagship of Ford’s full-size lineup.
smoke as a rapidly vanishing old heap left them far behind. We may frown on the street racing roots of this deceptive styling tradition but the SHO follows the same proven formula of dynamic power hidden within a discreet package. The 2011 Taurus SHO harnesses a Super High Output (SHO) 3.5litre twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 engine that makes a whopping 365 hp at 5,500 rpm and 350 lb/ft of torque peaking at 3,500 rpm. That’s more than a 100 hp jump up from the normally-aspirated 263 hp 3.5-litre
engine found in a regular Taurus, a difference that is palpable when you push the go-pedal and feel your eyeballs peel back. This power option has been made possible by Ford’s newfound love of an old favourite – turbocharging. Ford’s latest lineup of Ecoboost engines finds a replacement for displacement with turbocharging. In this particular case, The SHO utilizes twin turbochargers, instead of a larger single unit, reducing the “turbo lag” often associated with earliergeneration turbos, delivering a linear flow of power across a broad torque band from 1,500 to 5,500 rpm. Master Bombardier Bill Coles-Webb, from the 5th (BC) Field Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery at the Bay Street Armoury, drives a 6x6 army truck – or MSVS (Medium Support Vehicle System) – Canadian-made by Navista By Jennifer Blyth With a carrying capacity of 3 1/2 tons, Master Bombardier Bill Coles-Webb’s 6x6 army truck – or MSVS (Medium Support Vehicle System) – offers the practicality to allow Canada’s soldiers to tackle the task at hand, but with one or two added features to make that job a little easier. Canadian-made by Navistar, the “tough and no nonsense” truck shows its drivers are “on a mission and have the kit to get it done,” Coles-Webb says, recalling his favourite memory with the truck, “pulling our gun detachment’s 105mm Howitzer gun on exercise in firing ranges in Canada and the USA.” Favourite feature? “For any soldier, having a heater and cup holder are important and a rare luxury in most army trucks,” says the reserve artilleryman, who appreciated being able to be trained as a driver on the MSVS while keeping his civilian job. Learn more about the work of Canadian Reservists – and their assorted vehicles – at the Remembrance Week Open House at the Bay Street Armoury. To commemorate Veterans Week, the 5th (BC) Regiment Foundation and 2289 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps will welcome the public to a Remembrance Open House at the historic armoury on Sunday, Nov. 6 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visitors can explore the historic museums, enjoy military band music by cadets and professional military musicians and see cadet displays and demonstrations. Learn about army equipment and simulators and meet with serving soldiers of Victoria’s only reserve army artillery regiment. Military books (new and used) and pictures will also be on sale during the day. The 5th (BC) Artillery Regiment is the oldest continuously serving army unit in Western Canada, with a long record of service to Canada. As a coast artillery unit, it defended Greater Victoria during the late 1800s and during both the First and Second World Wars. Admission is free for the open house and children are welcome. The 5th (BC) Field Regiment will be participating in services in downtown Victoria, firing the salute to the fallen on Remembrance Day, November 11.

2012 Ford Taurus Continued from Pg. B3
Another key feature of this EcoBoost V6 is a direct injection system that improves throttle response, reduces cold start emissions and even benefits fuel economy. Ford rightfully boasts of “V8 power without compromise to V6 fuel economy” but, of course, one hand giveth and one hand taketh away, in this case negating some of the fuel savings with a premium octane recommendation. Taurus SHO engine power is channeled smoothly through a six-speed SelectShift transmission that allows normal automatic operation or drivercontrolled manual shifts via the tuckedin steering wheel paddles. All-wheel drive is standard on the SHO, and this sophisticated torquesensing system automatically puts power to the wheels with the best traction, adding a sense of all-weather security to its high-performance traction abilities. The 2011 Taurus SHO has a few other performance tricks up its sleeve, including an Electric Power Assist Steering (EPAS) system. This electrically powered system was designed for responsive road feel but it also makes a minor contribution to fuel economy due to the lack of parasitic drag off the engine. A firm ride and confident handling come courtesy of a sport-tuned suspension featuring unique shock absorbers, springs, stabilizer bars and a multilink SR1 rear suspension design. With all that performance technology packed into the car, you’d expect a high level of standard equipment as well. And you’d be right. Pretty well everything included in
the top-of-the-line Limited AWD version makes it into the SHO along with the performance enhancements – things like a 390-watt home theatre-style SONY audio system, a rear view camera, blind spot sensors, a power rear sunshade, seven-colour ambient lighting and a whole lot more. Options include adaptive cruise control and collision warning with brake support and a voice-activated Navigation System with a right-inch touch screen and 10GB of digital hard drive storage to bolster the audio system. The Taurus SHO can be personalized further from the accessory list with dual DVD headrest screens and other assorted bells and whistles. And all of these features accent a roomy, full-size interior with leathertrimmed 10-way power adjustable seats with Miko suede inserts. And, lest you forget you’re in firstclass accommodations with a serious performance slant, the SHO accelerator and brake pedals are trimmed in aluminum, the console, instrument and door panels are marked with SHOspecific aluminum appliqués and SHO branding is inscribed on the floor mats and instrument panel. Now that you’re more familiar with the qualities of the Taurus SHO, you might spot a few hints of both the beauty and the beast within but, as Ford puts it, “the key element of the authentic SHO formula is the subtlety of it unique exterior design cues.” Like the standard 20-inch Michelin high-performance tires on premium painted wheels, discreet badging, a slightly different grille, a subtle spoiler on the decklid and twin chrome exhaust tips peaking out from under its skirts. My tester was wrapped in Kona Blue
Metallic, a new colour for 2011 and, some of the 2012 models now appearing at dealers will have other minor packaging changes for a new year. Ford has announced more significant changes for the upcoming 2013 Taurus lineup – a thrifty 2.0-litre Ecoboost fourcylinder version, more power for the regular model’s V6 and handling tweaks for an upgraded SHO. For now, 2011 SHO models, as tested here, seem to be the best deal, listing for about $4,000 less than the 2012 versions. The Taurus SHO does not come cheap but it does come complete, with all the roomy utility of a full-size sedan, with a long list of included luxuries and amenities, and with enough power and handling potential to satisfy even the most dedicated performance enthusiast. Yeah, this “sleeper” might surprise the car in the next lane. It will definitely surprise you.

Expect plenty of power from the SHO engine.
A leather-wrapped interior features Miko suede inserts on massaging 10-way powered seats along, a choice of seven ambient lighting colours, plenty of elbow room and a host of standard and optional luxuries.
Only subtle clues give away the Taurus SHO’s secret identity – standard 20inch Michelin high-performance tires on premium painted wheels, discreet badging, a slightly different grille, a subtle spoiler on the rear decklid and twin chrome exhaust tips peaking out from under its skirts.
Custom car show creates Bieber’s Caddy Inside West Coast Customs, where audiences get a front row seat to outrageous car builds, will feature pop music sensation Justin Bieber and his extreme car request in the episode called “Bieber’s Caddy.” Showing this Sunday, Nov. 6, on Velocity, Inside West Coast Customs works with Bieber and GM to create the sleekest CTS-V on earth. in with so much positivity, creativeness, talent and direction, I knew this would be a great build. Together, we created something that Justin didn’t have... the sickest CTS-V on earth, that even exceeded Justin’s expectations,” says West Coast Customs’ Ryan Friedlinghaus. The crew starts out with a brand new red Cadillac CTS-V, courtesy of GM, then quickly tears the car down to its bare bones. Bob Grant works on converting the doors to “suicide doors,” using custom hinges built by Bobby at Sadistic Iron Werks. Follow the car as it moves onto the body shop where the
matte black paint will be laid down. This car will have custom JB badges, where the centre star of the logo will be pressed to open the doors. The interior continues the stealth look, with black leather and suede. The seats will be stitched with Bieber’s signature purple. Nothing on the car seems untouched – the headlights are replaced with LED Oracle lighting headlights, Asanti wheels are blackedout to match the car and then wrapped in Continental tires, and a custom subbox and amp-rack with Diamond Audio speakers offer studio-like sound and feel.

A battery check today can keep the tow truck away, says the Car Care Council, advising vehicle owners to have their battery tested and replaced if necessary this fall to avoid being stranded this winter. Sooner or later all batteries have to be replaced, and excessive heat and overcharging are the two main reasons for shortened battery life. Heat causes battery fluid to evaporate, thus damaging the internal structure of the battery. A malfunctioning component in the charging system, usually the voltage regulator, allows too high of a charging rate, leading to slow death for a battery. Colder temperatures increase the thickness of the engine oil, making the engine harder to turn over and the battery work harder, leading to harder starting. To get the most life out of a battery, the Car Care Council suggests the following:
• Be sure the electrical system is charging at the correct rate; overcharging can damage a battery as quickly as undercharging. • If your battery is the type that needs to be topped off, check it regularly, especially in hot weather. Add distilled water when necessary. • Always replace a battery with one that’s rated at least as high as the one originally specified. • Keep the top of the battery clean. Dirt becomes a conductor, which drains battery power. Further, as corrosion accumulates on battery terminals it becomes an insulator, inhibiting current flow. The Car Care Council is a national non-profit organization providing information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign that promotes the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair. IT’S BIG AND IT’S BACK. RECYCLE YOUR RIDE IS ALL ACROSS CANADA.
ONLY FOR A LIMITED TIME. ONLY AT YOUR FORD STORE.
Ford’s Recycle Your Ride program is a great incentive for consumers looking to save on their next vehicle while responsibly recycling their old one. Since the program was first offered in 2009, Ford’s Recycle Your Ride program has retired more than 50,000 old vehicles. And now, in an effort to recycle even more, the program has been expanded to include 2005-model-year-or-older vehicles. So even more people can receive between $500 and $3000* in incentives towards purchasing or leasing our smartest, safest, and fuel-efficient Ford vehicles. Like the Focus, Fusion, and F-150. Even the award-winning Fiesta and Edge. Our goal is to replace as many older vehicles still on the road today with more fuel-efficient, lower-emission Ford cars, CUVs, SUVs, and trucks. And you can help. If it’s time to recycle your ride, just visit any Ford Store across the country. But hurry, because Recycle Your Ride is only back for a limited time.
