L ANDSCAPES Peninsula Open Space Trust 2016 Annual Report
OUR MISSION
POST protects and cares for open space, farms and parkland in and around Silicon Valley.
OUR VISION
POST is shaping a vibrant ecosystem for Silicon Valley— a network of protected lands that provide scenic beauty, clean air and water, locally grown food, and a place for people and wildlife to thrive. These lands will be preserved forever so that present and future generations can live in harmony with nature, in a careful balance of urban and rural landscapes that make our region extraordinary. cover

2016 YEAR IN REVIEW When my father joined the POST Board in the 1980s, it was a novel idea to buy and protect land and transfer it to public agencies for public access. Back then land protection required significant political maneuvering. As a private organization, POST was nimble and responsive enough to work through it all and get the job done. POST’s vision has always been bold, and I have been honored to be a second-generation board member and Board Chair. During my tenure, POST has expanded our work beyond the hills of San Mateo County to include Santa Clara and Santa Cruz Counties, secured a future for vast redwood forests and initiated efforts to save our coastal farmlands. I am particularly proud of launching our Farmland Futures Initiative (FFI) last February and to report that three farms on the San Mateo coast have already been protected through the program.
From my family’s ranch in Saratoga, I saw what happens when good farmland is paved over, it disappears forever. As a result, I have spent most of my life working to keep local farming viable while protecting our open spaces, and that is exactly what FFI does. POST’s innovative approach to farmland protection guarantees that what happened to the Valley of Heart’s Delight does not happen on the San Mateo coast. As you can tell, the mission of POST is near and dear to both my family and to me. It is comforting to leave POST in the capable hands of the staff and my successor, Dennis. It has been an honor to serve as your Board Chair and to have the opportunity to work with you, our donors, to create an ongoing and evolving legacy of thriving open spaces in this area for generations to come. With fond regards,
Jan F. Garrod, Outgoing POST Board Chair 4
A LOOK AHEAD
PO
As I reflect on our past, looking ahead also energizes me. As times change, POST continues to evolve. The work ahead of us is more important than it has ever been and I look forward to working with you, our donors, to make exciting things happen.

PO
More than ever, we value POST’s work and I want to thank Jan for all that he has done to further our mission. From FFI and Taste of the Coast, to the many projects, investments and accomplishments detailed in this report, his leadership leaves very large shoes to fill. As I take over as Board Chair in January, I can’t wait to keep Jan’s momentum going.
WELCOMES
As we celebrate POST’s 40th Anniversary in 2017, I invite all of you to celebrate the myriad ways that our local open spaces add to our daily lives.
legacy forward. Take our two most recent campaigns: Heart of the Redwoods and the Farmland Futures Initiative. Both are excellent examples of how our work has evolved to protect multiple conservation values at once. Scenic vistas, critical watersheds, rare and protected wildlife habitat, productive farmlands and forests and increasingly connected recreational access have all been protected in these campaigns. This is called multi-benefit conservation and it relies on data and on the ground science to more accurately target where we work, how we work and the results we want to see from our work.
ST
My wife, Nancy, and I have lived with views of Windy Hill for years. Our family has benefitted from POST’s work and is so grateful to our founders for their vision and tenacity so long ago.
It’s a perfect time to celebrate the new things we are doing in land conservation that propel our Dennis DeBroeck, Incoming POST Board Chair 5
2016 ACCOMPLISHMENTS
PROTECTED LAND FOR US ALL Launched Farmland Futures Initiative Launched the Farmland Futures Initiative (FFI), a 10-year, $25 million campaign to ensure local farmlands are forever protected for the multitude of benefits they provide. The initiative will triple the number of protected farms and number of protected farmland acres on the San Mateo County coast.
Introduced an Innovative New Tool Introduced a new land protection tool — the affirmative agricultural easement, to achieve FFI goals. While offering natural resource protection and limitations on development, this new easement also requires some or all of the property remain in active agricultural production.
Protected Pie Ranch Upgraded a conservation easement on Pie Ranch, an organic educational farm on Highway 1, to an affirmative agricultural easement. Once part of a historic dairy operation covering AĂąo Nuevo Point, the property is now used to teach both farmers and inner city students about food, farming and sustainable agriculture.
Protected Potrero Nuevo Farm Purchased an affirmative agricultural easement on the 300-acre Potrero Nuevo Farm in San Gregorio. Situated along Tunitas Creek Road, this picturesque and visible farm grows over 40 organic crops, provides 250 acres of grazing land for LeftCoast GrassFed cattle and includes 19 acres of prime wildlife habitat along Tunitas Creek. Sustainably Rebuilt a Barn
Integrated Science and Data
Improved Water Efficiency
Rebuilt a decaying barn on Cloverdale Coastal Ranches to improve the long-term operation of Root Down Farm, a pasture raised livestock operation on the property, and future farms. The new barn was built by Santa Cruz Timberframes to last 300 years and uses both recycled wood from the old barn as well as locally grown redwood. Watch the three part video series on this project at openspacetrust.org/blog/ root-down-barn.
Hired Director of Conservation Science, Dr. Nicole Heller, to ensure that POST is integrating the best available science and data into our work improving and caring for protected lands. For example, her work to inform the many benefits of fire for managing forest health. Learn more about our recent controlled burn at openspacetrust.org/blog/ fire-back-to-the-land.
Drilled wells on three farms and ranches in order to minimize use of stream water during peak usage seasons and provide the farmers and ranchers with improved, more efficient water infrastructure.
Improved Forest Management
Finalized a Long Term Relationship
Planned for Trails
Completed our first sustainable timber harvest on 84-acres of San Vicente Redwoods. This selective thinning helps to ensure long-term ecological benefits and a healthy forest. For more information on the harvest visit openspacetrust.org/
Completed a long-term lease with an option to purchase with Ryan Casey of Blue House Farm on a scenic and resource rich 74-acre San Gregorio farm. The lease keeps prime soil in production, while providing a popular organic farm with long-term stability and a place to connect with the community through seasonal programs.
Supported Midpen’s creation of a conceptual design and feasibility study to provide safe passage for wildlife and improve regional trail connections across Highway 17.
