LIVE WELL. LIVE 101. WELLNESS TIP Healthy sleep habits can make a big difference in your quality of life. Improve your ‘good sleep hygiene’ by implementing these practices below on a consistent basis.

Stick to a sleep schedule for bedtime and wake-up time, even on the weekends. This helps regulate your body’s clock and could help you fall asleep and stay asleep throughout the night. Exercise daily. Vigorous exercise is best, but even light exercise is better than no activity. Exercise at any time of day, but not at the expense of your sleep. Avoid caffeine, alcohol, cigarettes, and heavy meals in the evening as they can disrupt sleep. Eating large or spicy meals within two to three hours of bedtime can cause discomfort and indigestion, which can make it hard to sleep. Sleep on comfortable, supportive mattress and pillows. Remember, the life expectancy for most good, quality mattresses is about 9 to 10 years. Evaluate your room. Design your sleep environment to establish the optimum sleep conditions: dark and cool – between 60 and 67 degrees. Consider using blackout curtains, eye shades, ear plugs, “white noise” machines, humidifiers, or fans. Wind down with a relaxing bedtime ritual - your body needs time to shift into sleep mode. Dim lighting is ideal, as the light emitted by some electronic devices can activate the brain, making it hard to fall asleep. A relaxing routine for the last hour before bed helps separate sleep from activities which interfere with restful sleep. If you can’t sleep, try a relaxing activity in another room until you feel tired. To strengthen the association between bed and sleep, use your bed only for sleep and eliminate work materials, computers and televisions from your sleeping environment. If you still experience trouble sleeping, speak with your doctor or a sleep professional. You may also benefit from recording your sleep in a Sleep Diary to help you better evaluate common patterns or issues.

MORE FUN AROUND TOWN HEALTH TIP Join us in welcoming our new yoga instructor, Tracey! This month she’s demonstrating the correct and incorrect format for a plank. Follow her form below to get the most out of this pose.
