PRESBYbulletin Penn Presbyterian Medical Center

Giving is Penn’s Way Penn’s Way is underway across our campuses! In partnership with our colleagues at the University, Penn Medicine is stepping up to support the greater Philadelphia area through donations to Penn Medicine, United Way and Center for Responsible Funding Agencies. As one of the largest umbrella campaigns in the regions, Penn has set a goal of $1.5 million. This year, PPMC funds will be designated towards their Discharge Pharmacy Assistance Program, which provides prescription medications upon discharge to the most vulnerable populations we serve. The Penn’s Way campaign is marked by raffles, fairs and events, honoring not only the donations that come in from thousands of employees, but also the culture of caring and spirit of giving at Penn Medicine. If you have not done so already, please visit Penn’s Way and pledge your support and immediately impact the communities we serve.

PATIENT EXPERIENCE WEEK A HUGE SUCCESS! Penn Presbyterian Medical Center celebrated yet another Patient Experience Week at the beginning of October, with a range of fun events to show just how much Presby cares both for our patients and appreciates the staff who go the extra mile for them each day. The week kicked off on Monday, Oct. 10 with a breakfast for all PPMC staff at the PAC concourse followed by an afternoon grand rounds where staff discussed what they do to make sure patients have the best possible experience here at Presby. On Tuesday, a sharply-dressed crowd packed the PHI-106 conference room for the second annual Patient Advocacy Awards. The celebratory air was contagious as colleagues smiled and congratulated each other on jobs well done throughout the year. “This is one of our favorite times of the year,” said Alyson Cole, associate executive director at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. “You change lives and we want to thank you for that.” And what better way for the week to wrap up than with an ice cream social in the lobby. A freezer was wheeled into the Cupp lobby as Presby staff doled out classic (continued on back)

strawberry shortcake and chocolate éclair ice cream bars to appreciative staff members. Dozens of the Presby family stopped by for a treat and all walked away with a smile.

Congratulations to Penn CAREs Grant Winners

“This is truly your week,” said Michelle Volpe, CEO of PPMC, at the Patient Advocacy Awards. “I hope you step back and enjoy your successes.”

A hearty congratulations to all of the Penn Medicine staff members who earned a CAREs grant this quarter! Each year, Penn Medicine offers dozens of grants to employees whose commitment to their community extends outside of our walls. At Penn Presbyterian, Janet McMaster, RN, coordinator for the Trauma Center, was awarded a grant to support her work with the West Philadelphia Alliance for Children (or WEPAC). Through WEPAC, McMaster helps maintain a library that’s no longer supported by the city at the Samuel Powel Elementary at 36th and Powelton so children still have a place to read and learn. McMaster received grant funding to purchase books to enhance students’ understanding of their heritage and health. Congrats to all of the winners across Penn! Catrena Drake (CCA)

National Respiratory Care Week 2016, Real Life Heroes At PPMC and across Penn Medicine, respiratory therapists are supporting our patients with every breath they take. The week of Oct. 23rd marked National Respiratory Care Week, an opportunity to celebrate these real-life heroes. A day in the life of our RCPs is filled with variety and unexpected situations, and might include responding to a trauma alert, a code or a rapid response call, or assisting at the bedside during a bronchoscopy procedure. Other RCPs work conducting tests with our patients in the Outpatient Pulmonary Function Lab. Whether PPMC’s RCPs are treating, testing or educating patients and families about their conditions and care, they are all dedicated to maximizing recovery and promoting lung health in our patients’ lives. Thanks to everyone for their support this week! No matter where you find them, please take a moment to recognize and thank our Respiratory Care and Pulmonary Function staff for their hard work and the great job that they do each day. They are real life heroes!
