PAH — home of the first hospital pharmacy in the original 13 US colonies, established in 1752 — has been granted a three-year accreditation for its Postgraduate Year One (PGY1) Pharmacy residency program by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). The ASHP is a national professional organization of nearly 40,000 members, including pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and students who provide patient care services in hospitals, health systems, and ambulatory clinics. The ASHP has been at the
forefront of efforts to improve medication use and enhance patient safety for the past 70 years. “This is very exciting, well-deserved news for our Pharmacy team and residents,” said Suzanne Y. Brown, MS, RPh, director of Pharmacy Services. “Achieving this new milestone reaffirms our commitment to our interdisciplinary approach of providing optimal, safe, and effective medication management for our patients at all times.”

Giving Extra Care During the Holidays All across Penn Medicine, employees volunteer their time, money, and resources to support their communities. During this past holiday season, many PAH employees gave of themselves to bring joy to patients and their families, and community members in need. Here is how PAH contributed to Penn Medicine’s efforts to help brighten the holidays for those in need:
the homeless throughout the hospital’s neighborhood on early Christmas morning by Magnes and her family.
Baking for Bucks
On December 10th, Women’s Health staff PAH held a bake sale to benefit Cookies for Kid’s Cancer, which is run by Penn Friends and Family Alliance. The Joan Karnell Supportive Care Services Program Team hosted their fourth annual Together We Can Bake Sale on December 11 and 12 — all proceeds from which directly benefit cancer patients and their families at PAH.
Stamping Out Hunger During the Holidays Helping to Spread Holiday Cheer to the Homeless
As she has each year for the past decade, PAH Skilled Care Center (SCC) Administrator Kathy Magnes, BSN, RN, NHA, collected items donated from generous PAH employees for the homeless. Donations, which include much-needed toiletries, non-perishable snack foods and clothing, are divvied up and wrapped by the staff of the Hospital’s Skilled Care Center. The festive gift bags are then distributed to
PAH Auxiliary A wa r d s
Food & Nutrition Services at Pennsylvania Hospital sponsored two food drives this holiday season. The first was a collection of nonperishable food items for Philabundance in support of WMMR, FM 93.3’s Preston & Steve’s Campout for Hunger campaign which ended December 6. The team continued to collect non-perishable food items for the PAH Hall-Mercer Community Behavioral Health Center from December 5-20, with collection bins set up throughout the hospital campus.
A n n ua l A l l o c at i o n s
For over half a century, each New Year, the PAH Auxiliary awards allocations to fund departments and programs throughout the Hospital and Hall-Mercer Community Behavioral Health Center. This year 35 separate allocations totaling over $125,000 are being distributed. Each fall, there is an open call for funding requests. The funds are raised via various events, including bazaars, golf tournaments, and sales from The Bargain Shop, the PAH thrift store which provides quality, gently-used clothing and home goods at modest prices. Contributions are used solely for the purchase of equipment for the Hospital and to fund Hospital programs and services that directly benefit patients. Auxiliary members would like to thank all who help them carry out the mission of the hospital’s historical motto of The Good Samaritan: “Take Care of Him and I Will Repay Thee.” Each contribution — no matter the size — has a positive impact on our patients who need it most. New Procedure
for Lost & Found
In the continuing effort to best serve our patients, there is a new procedure for lost and found items at any PAH facility. Employees are urged to keep a diligent eye out for any unattended personal belongings. Any discovered money, jewelry, or electronics — such as cell phones, tablets, and laptops — should promptly be brought the Security Department in the Preston Basement so they can be documented and investigated to help return them to their rightful owner.
For Your Convenience – One-Stop-Drop-off During Lost & Found Week To help facilitate this new process there will be a “one stop drop” period for employees to turn in all lost personal items currently secured in any hospital department or patient unit.
