PPMC DEPARTMENT OF MEDICINE
LEADERSHIP TRANSITIONS We are pleased to announce that last month Gregory Tino, MD, was appointed as the next Chief of Medicine at PPMC. Dr. Tino officially assumed his new role on November 1, 2013. As we welcome Dr. Tino to his new role, we also congratulate our former Chief of Medicine, Jack Ende, MD, on his new roles as Assistant Vice President for the University of Pennsylvania Health System and Assistant Dean for Advanced Medical Practice in the Perelman School of Medicine. Over the last 25 years that Dr. Tino has been with the Health System, he has held be various clinical and administrative positions ri in the Pulmonary, Allergy & Critical Care Division at HUP. He served as the Director of the Pulmonary Outpatient Practice for many years, and HUP’s Chief of Pulmonary Clinical Services since 2007. In 1997, Dr. Tino became an attending physician at Penn Presbyterian. A nationally recognized expert in pulmonary diseases and critical care medicine – particularly in interstitial lung disease and bronchiectasis – Dr. Tino has won a number of awards, including being named to Philadelphia Magazine’s annual list of Top Docs. In addition to his new roles with the Health System and Perelman School of Medicine, Dr. Ende is also serving as Executive Medical Director for Patient Signature Programs, and maintains his existing faculty appointment and endowed chair within the Department of Medicine. For 16 years, Dr. Ende served with great distinction as Penn Presbyterian Medical Center’s Chief of Medicine, overseeing that Department’s expansion (continued on back)

and transition to a CPUP department known for outstanding inpatient and outpatient care, and excellence in education. His contributions in establishing the department’s subspecialty programs, primary care programs (including the Primary Care Residency Program), numerous other clinical programs, and outstanding opportunities for Penn students, residents and fellows to learn, and for faculty to grow and develop are among his legacies.
PPMC Nursing Celebrates CNIV Day Reaching clinical level IV of nursing at PPMC is a unique milestone requiring three to five years of dedication to the same area of nursing. Combining a flexible, highly proficient skill set allows these professionals to be a tremendous asset to other members of their care teams, and more importantly, the patients they treat every day. PPMC nursing leadership recently hosted a CNIV day honoring those who reached this achievement and empowering them with new ideas to continue their career growth. James Ballinghoff, RN, MSN, MBA, Chief Nursing Officer, opened up the conference by delivering a presentation outlining ambitious construction plans, including the Advanced Care Pavilion opening November 2014, and Penn Medicine’s Level-I Regional Resource Trauma Center moving to PPMC in early 2015. “The trauma program will integrate into our great organization,” said Ballinghoff. “With your help, we will be better able to serve the community with more resources and service lines.” Later in the program, Allen L. Fasnacht, BSN, MSN, Director of Emergency and Medical Nursing, challenged the Clinical Nurse IV professionals in attendance to advance in their own abilities while supporting the clinical level I, II, and III nurses in their teams as they grow under the leadership of their peers.
We are thrilled that Dr. Ende is continuing to practice and teach at PPMC. Please join us in congratulating both Dr. Tino and Dr. Ende on their new roles.
