A NOT-SO-TYPICAL DAY AT PPMC How do you know when someone is having a stroke? What are the different parts of my eye called? And how do you make a cast? Answers to these questions –- and hundreds more –- were part of the annual Take Your Child to Work Day at PPMC, when more than 175 kids came to the hospital eager to see and learn from teams of volunteers what it’s like to work in our hospitals and care for our patients. Keeping patients safe is a priority at PPMC and the demonstration in the Emergency Department showed kids how our staff does that, in part by using decontamination showers and hazmat suits when potentially dangerous chemicals or other hazardous materials are present. Thanks to the FAST acronym and staff from our stroke program, every child who participated also now knows the signs of a stroke and when to get help. to the FAST acronym and staff “ Thanks from our stroke program, every child who

visitors -- covered with gowns, gloves, and masks -– to learn the proper way to intubate a patient and make sure their airway is clear. They also learned about the anatomy of our eyes, common eye diseases and how to keep your eyes healthy. Members of the trauma team taught participants about the dangers of alcohol consumption and intoxication, and took our young visitors up to see the new PennSTAR helipad – which, along with learning about (and eating!) healthy snacks with our nutritionists, is always a favorite! Thanks to Kim Elam of Human Resources, who once again led the Take Your Child to Work Day planning, and all of our faculty and staff volunteers.
