The fifth annual Florence Nightingale Recognition Ceremony, “Crossroads: Changing Times in the Profession of Nursing” took a past, present, and future look at nursing at PPMC. “We are extremely proud of our cadre of nurses,” said Jim Ballinghoff, MSN, MBA, RN, NEA-BC, interim chief nursing officer. “We hold great admiration and appreciation for each of your unique talents, knowledge, compassion, and courage that you so generously share with your patients, colleagues and the community we serve.” Ballinghoff cited the selflessness of PPMC nurses while presenting a $1,000 check on their behalf to Penn School of Nursing’s Living Independently for Elders (LIFE UPenn) program. Dedicated to improving the lives of seniors in West Philadelphia, LIFE UPenn provides all necessary preventive, primary, acute, and long-term health care services to help keep qualified older residents living in their homes and contributing to their communities as long as possible. Laura Solano, MSN, RN, CCRN-CMC, CCNS, clinical nurse specialist at PPMC, discussed the current effort to embrace technology. “Most people know about the traditional skills,” Solano said, “but have no idea that nurses need to program and interpret complex medical equipment and waveforms, and utilize multiple software (continued on back)

Following last year’s successful participation in the annual Philadelphia Science Festival, volunteers from PPMC once again attended this year’s Science Day in Clark Park to lead hands-on CPR demonstrations and instruction. On Saturday, April 27, attendees gathered in West Philadelphia’s Clark Park to meet local scientists and science students and participate in activities that encourage the discovery of science in one’s own backyard. Science came to life with more than 20 interactive, hands-on activities, including PPMC’s CPR demonstration and instruction and the Center for Brain Injury and Repair’s exhibit on keeping your brain safe from concussions. Presby volunteers spent the afternoon teaching local families the mechanics of CPR to promote circulation and oxygenation in the event of cardiac arrest. Thank you to all our PPMC volunteers who dedicated their time and effort to helping educate our community. For more photos from the day, please see the e-Bulletin.
