PPMC Surgical Techs Climb the Ladder Congratulations are in order for PPMC’s first surgical technicians to climb the new Clinical Ladder program for Surgical Technicians, a model developed by Lori FowlerGagliardi, RN, MBA, CNOR, Clinical Director of Perioperative Services, in coordination with colleagues in Administration and Human Resources. The program is similar in nature to the Nursing Clinical Ladder program and aims to improve and reward professional development in the following core areas: • • • •
Clinical judgment and decision making Employee and client/family relationship, including community service Clinical leadership Clinical scholarship
The purpose of the Surgical Technician Clinical Ladder is to recognize employees for their contributions to quality care, as well as their clinical knowledge and professional achievements. It is designed to provide advancement opportunities for employees who choose to focus on clinical practice. The Clinical Ladder recognizes and rewards participation in departmental activities, program development, education, and clinical practice. The model is designed to provide technicians with opportunities to take on additional responsibilities and develop more advanced skills, while also attracting and retaining experienced staff and encouraging ongoing professional development. “PPMC has been working to create and implement this development opportunity for almost three years, so it was very special and emotional to honor our first group,” said Fowler-Gagliardi. “Giving our surgical technicians the opportunity to advance their careers, while giving leadership the opportunity to recognize their professional development and achievements is something we look forward to celebrating each year.” (continued on back)
John Gallagher, MSN, RN, CCNS, CCRN, RRT, Trauma Program Manager Bleeding Control Course Bleeding injuries can result from natural and manmade disasters as well as interpersonal violence. Providing bystanders with basic tools and information on the simple steps they can take in an emergency situation to stop life-threatening bleeding can save lives. Penn’s Trauma Program plans to aid in saving lives by offering Bleeding Control Course (B-Con) to groups in West Philadelphia. In alignment with the national Stop the Bleeding Campaign, Trauma staff will teach participants the basic life-saving medical interventions, including bleeding control with a tourniquet, gauze packs or hemostatic agents, and opening an airway. Katie Stonelake, BSN, RN, CCRN, MICU Deck Repair of Rudolphy-Douglass Home The Rudolphy/Mercy-Douglass Home is a residence program for lowincome individuals with blindness and other disabilities. The Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) staff at Penn Presbyterian have had a special relationship with the residents of Home for a number of years. In seeing the need for repairs for the Home’s outside porch area, MICU staff have reacted and secured grant funding and the promise of a contractor to make the necessary repairs so this space can once again be enjoyed by the residents. PPMC thanks all those who have recently volunteered to be Home Scott Egan, RN, BSN, MHA, NE-BC, CCRN, Nurse Manager in the MICU, helped his daughter’s girl Cook scout troop sponsor a dinner in March Heroes at the Gift of Life Family House. Home Cook Heroes is a community-focused program that provides a much needed service to families who often don’t have the time, resources, or energy to prepare a healthy, home-cooked meal. Volunteers from community organizations dedicate their time to preparing meals on a nightly basis for residents of the transplant house, including patients and their families. In the past few months, staff from PPMC’s MICU and ED, together with their families and community groups, have volunteered their time. In the coming months several more will offer support to the program by cooking, stocking the pantry or sponsoring a meal. Please visit the Presby Bulletin online for more information on how you can volunteer to be a Home Cook Hero.
