PRESBYbulletin Penn Presbyterian Medical Center

Penn Medicine Wins the 2014 Pennsylvania Donate Life Hospital Challenge Earlier this year, representatives from all four Penn Medicine hospitals banded together for the 2014 Pennsylvania Donate Life Hospital Challenge. Organized by the Hospital & Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP), in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Health, the Center for Organ Recovery and Education (CORE), and the Gift of Life Donor Program, the campaign ran from February 28 until May 14. During that time, participants organized activities and events aimed at inspiring and increasing donor awareness and designations within their hospital families. Teams captured those activities on a scorecard in an effort to achieve platinum, gold, silver, and bronze level point totals. In July, HAP recognized Penn Medicine as the health system with the Highest Total Points Achieved! The involvement and support of our faculty and staff were critical to the overall success of this campaign. HAP Campaign leaders asked the entire Penn Medicine community to help save lives by educating staff members, patients and their families, visitors, and the extended community outside our doors on the critical need for organ donation and providing opportunities for people to sign up as organ, eye, and tissue donors. Throughout the campaign, Penn Medicine teams worked together to host registration events, post flyers and advertisements raising awareness about the campaign, organize lunch and learns for staff, and arrange donor awareness celebrations. “The HAP campaign is a true testament to what we can accomplish when we work together, and to be awarded for raising awareness around such an important, life-saving issue, is a true honor,” said Diane Jones, BSN, (continued on back)

Summer Spotlight on Skincare Throughout the summer, the Presby Bulletin will be giving you the lowdown on what’s fact and what’s fiction when it comes to protecting your skin from the sun’s rays.

Fact or Fiction: One sunburn won’t raise your risk of skin cancer. FICTION: Sunburns damage DNA which can lead to the formation of cancer cells, but it’s a slow process. In fact, sunburns in childhood and young adulthood can lead to significant damage later on.

RN, CCRN, clinical nurse III in the SPU, and chair of the Organ Donation Steering Committee. “I want to congratulate everyone who participated in Presby’s own Donor Challenge competition, especially our first place winners from the MICU, and our second place winners from the SPU. I am extremely proud of all the work our teams put in to help promote organ donation.” Many thanks and congratulations to all those who helped raise awareness around this life-saving issue in the hospital and throughout the community!

2013 Bach Fund Winners Each year, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center is fortunate to bestow upon select faculty members grants from the Bach Fund, a trust created through the Estate of Jeanette Bach Tashjian. Grants, available for use by members of PPMC staff, are allocated to support as many worthwhile projects as possible, up to $40,000 annually. In 2013, the Bach Fund awarded six grants, and last month, five of the awardees gathered in the rotunda to present posters on their projects that were supported by those grants. Congratulations to all of the recipients! Projects represented at the presentation were: Judith O’Donnell, MD, and Russell Huffman, MD, MPH: “Pilot Study to Evaluate the Bacterial Diversity of the Shoulder Joint During Revision Arthoscopy: Microbial Genomies vs. Standard Care Cultures” Laura Kosseim, MD, and Eric Hume, MD: “Pre-Operative Screening for Sleep Apnea in Patients Undergoing Hip or Knee Arthroplasty” Andrea Apter, MD, MSC, and Rodalyn Gonzalez, BA: “Determining Patients’ Ease in Using the Patient Portal for Communication with Providers and Accessing Health Care”
