PPMC... And All That Jazz Thank you to all PPMC faculty and staff who dedicated time toward helping to coordinate last month’s seventh annual Lancaster Avenue Jazz and Arts Festival. The event was a huge success, with nearly 1,000 guests visiting Saunders Park throughout the day for food, music and fun. “I have to say what a fantastic event this was. The weather, entertainment line-up, vendor area, children’s activities and informational tables where all simply incredible,” Gary Ginsberg, assistant executive director of Facilities at PPMC, said in an email to staff. “I had a great time. Save Lives Save Lives Save Lives Recently, Penn Medicine joined The Hospital & Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP) Donate Life Hospital Campaign. Sponsored by HAP, the campaign brings together state partners, local and regional organ procurement organizations, and hospitals statewide to increase the number of registered organ, eye and tissue donors. This campaign goes until August 31, 2013. In the weeks ahead, you’ll be hearing more about Penn Medicine’s participation in this important campaign, so please stay tuned. The Benefits of Saving a Life Eligible employees may request a Bone Marrow/Organ Donation leave of absence when the employee intends to donate bone marrow, stem cells or a major organ to another person. Eligible employees will be paid regular time. No vacation, personal or sick time will be utilized. Time off will not be counted towards the employee’s leave entitlement. The amount of time off granted will be determined on a case by case basis, depending on the type of donation to be made. Interested employees may contact the Disability Management Office at 215.615.2630 for additional information.

I can’t wait for next year.” An article from the Philadelphia Inquirer noted that Philadelphia has seen a recent resurgence in its jazz scene, with events such as the Lancaster Avenue Jazz and Arts Festival and, in May, the second annual Center City Jazz Festival. Noting that Philadelphia was home to jazz legend John Coltrane, the article suggested that “honoring the legacy of Coltrane could be a giant step forward in reviving the city’s rich jazz heritage and boosting its historic and cultural attractions.”

MS Bike: Registration is Still Open! Team UPHS/Penn 2012
Don’t forget, it’s not too late to register for the Bike MS: City to Shore 2013! This year marks the 18th anniversary of Team UPHS/Penn riding in the Bike MS City to Shore Ride striving again, with your help, to be the largest team with the highest fund raising! We’re counting on new and veteran cyclists to keep the momentum going strong and join the team this September 28 & 29 for an even more successful year. As always, there is truly an option for everyone - you can choose to participate as a cyclist, a virtual cyclist (if you can’t ride, but want to fundraise), or a volunteer at the team’s Finish Line tent. All employees, students, family and friends of UPHS/Penn are welcome! Each person who raises the minimum $300 receives a free customized team jersey to wear during the ride and access to the finish line tent with plenty of food & giveaways.
