PENNSYLVANIA HOSPITAL CENTER FOR BREAST IMAGING The Pennsylvania Hospital Center for Breast Imaging has a new home on 2 Cathcart! On Sept. 28, PAH staff and faculty gathered at the new center to celebrate its grand opening, explore the state-of-the-art facility, and learn about the different services that will be offered when the center officially opens its doors to patients in October—just in time for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“We were so excited to welcome team members from throughout the hospital to showcase the new space,” said Janell Byrd, manager of the Center for Breast Imaging. “So many PAH staff members interact with patients who need our services, and now they are able to see firsthand the quality services and care we will be able to offer in the new center.” The center is equipped with the latest breast imaging technology and is designed to deliver the highest quality of care available. Patients will have access to the most advanced imaging services with the least radiation dose possible for an accurate diagnosis. The newly expanded suite and state-of-the-art technology makes way for new clinical research opportunities and

innovative treatment options. Additional space, equipment, and staff also enhances our ability to streamline the patient experience — from registration, to imaging and if necessary, to biopsy. “This carefully designed facility within the heart of the hospital allows us to offer exceptional care with same-day results and biopsies to more patients,” said Brian S. Englander, MD, chair of the department of Radiology at Pennsylvania Hospital. “The center is truly state-of-the-art and I look forward to continued growth of our clinical program and meaningful clinical research." / / / Continued on page 2

COOKING OUT

FOR A GOOD CAUSE

Members of the nursing team from 5 Cathcart closed out the summer by hosting a cookout for guests staying at the Gift of Life family house. The team served up a range of delicious food including hot dogs, hamburgers, corn on the cob, and pulled pork for the 50 guests staying at the Gift of Life family house who are waiting for an organ transplant for themselves or a loved one. “Many families who stay in the Gift of Life family house have been there for weeks or even months,” said Ashley Stankiewicz, RN, of 5 Cathcart. “Being able to make them feel more comfortable by making a home-cooked meal is a great way to support the families

while also giving our team the opportunity to help others outside of our normal work environment.” Penn Medicine has been a long-time Gift of Life partner, helping to provide care and support for the more than 5,700 people in need of organs in the Philadelphia region. Throughout the summer, Pennsylvania Hospital joined the other Penn Medicine

entities to support the Gift of Life and the Hospital & Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP)’s 2016 Pennsylvania Donate Life Hospital Challenge by encouraging PAH staff to join the campaign by becoming an organ, tissue, and eye donor; educating our hospital community about the critical need for donation; and providing opportunities for other people to sign up as donors.

GI V E T H E G I F T O F L I F E As a longtime partner to Gift of Life, Pennsylvania Hospital encourages all members of our staff to join the Gift of Life Donor Program. STORIES FROM THE HEART:

A Q & A WITH FLORENCE VANEK, MSN, RN We sat down with Florence Vanek MSN, RN, a professional practice implementation consultant at PAH, to find out why she was inspired to join the 2016 Penn Medicine Heart Walk team and why she is committed to ending cardiovascular disease.

Join the

2016 Penn medicine heart walk team

To day !

What personal impact has cardiovascular disease had on your life or on your family? Cardiovascular disease has impacted my life since I was a little girl. When I was in second grade my previously hard-working and healthy father had a severe heart attack. I still remember peeking through my bedroom window as the ambulance brought him to the hospital. As it turned out, he had severely high cholesterol that had never been checked. He had several heart attacks after the first one and was in and out of the hospital for a good portion of my young life. Thankfully, because of the medical care that he received, my father is now in his 70s and enjoying his life as a grandfather. I know a lot of families don’t have the same happy ending that we did, which is why the Heart Walk is so very important to me.

The Philadelphia Heart Walk is part of a collaborative, nationwide event to raise awareness and funds to support the American Heart Association’s mission of building healthier lives free of cardiovascular disease and stroke. More than 15,000 people are expected to attend this year’s event on Saturday, Nov. 5 at Citizens Bank Park.

Why is ending cardiovascular disease important to you?

WHEN:

Ending cardiovascular disease is important to me because it unnecessarily and tragically impacts so many families. There are diseases that exist that we know so little about, but heart disease is not one of them. In both my professional life as a registered nurse and in my personal life, I have witnessed countless families who have been devastated by cardiovascular disease. There are proven interventions that we can take to lower risk — we just need to get that message out there so that this disease does not have the reach and consequence that it currently does.

Why did you want to join the Penn Medicine Heart Walk Team? I was inspired to join the team because I feel strongly about being part of the effort to raise awareness about heart disease. Every year 735,000 Americans have a heart attack. Heart disease contributes to one in four deaths in the United States and is the leading cause of death for both men and women — these are very concerning statistics! What is even more alarming to me is that people generally avoid talking about it, until they or someone that they are close with experience heart disease. There are so many (really simple!) things that you can do to lower your risk, so we need to encourage more education and conversation about heart disease.
