35TH ANNUAL ZUBROW LECTURE

KATRINA A. ARMSTRONG, MD

The Molly & Sidney Zubrow Lecture and Award Program is a long standing Pennsylvania Hospital tradition that celebrates leaders in the health care field who carry on Sidney Zubrow, MD’s legacy of always working to improve patient care and broaden the horizons for everyone and anyone who works in health care. “While Sidney and Molly Zubrow are no longer with us, their legacy of compassion, humanism, and dedication to providing the best care possible remains with us today,” said CEO Theresa Larivee. “Dr. Zubrow believed in always maintaining respectful and compassionate relationships among physicians, students, and every single member of the health care team, as well as the patients.”

This year’s 35th annual Zubrow lecture honored former Penn Medicine faculty member, Katrina A. Armstrong, MD for her efforts to improve trust and communication in health care.

strong through this period. However, critical steps are needed to strengthen trust in the physician-patient relationship and restore trust in American health care.”

Armstrong is an internationally recognized investigator in medical decision-making, quality of care, and cancer prevention and outcomes as well as an award-winning teacher. Her work focuses on the interface of genomics, cancer, and social policy.

During her time at Penn, Armstrong served as the chief of the Division of General Medicine and as a professor of Medicine in the Perelman School of Medicine until 2013 when she moved to Boston. She now serves as the Jackson Professor of Clinical Medicine at Harvard Medical School, chair of the Department of Medicine, and Physician-in-Chief of Massachusetts General Hospital.

During the Zubrow lecture, Armstrong shared her insights for restoring trust in health care. “Trust is central to the function of many key parts of society, especially in health care,” Armstrong said. “Although trust is health care has seen some decline, the trust between a patient and physician has remained remarkably

“Dr. Armstrong is a tremendous honoree who truly represents everything that the Zubrows stood for and held dear in the practice of medicine,” Larivee said.

W PAH Heart Walk Team Raises MORE THAN $30,000 Congratulations to everyone at PAH who helped make the 2016 Philadelphia Heart Walk a record-breaking success on Nov. 5! This year, our team captains led the charge for PAH to exceed its goals by raising more than $30,000 and registering 340 walkers. The 2016 Heart Walk boasts the highest PAH fundraising and walker participation to date. As a health system, Penn Medicine raised more than $261,000, surpassing this year’s system-wide goal and breaking the record for the highest amount fundraised by a health system for the Philadelphia Heart Walk. The top individual fundraiser was our very own Chief Executive Officer, Theresa Larivee, who also served as Penn Medicine's Executive Champion for the 2016 Heart Walk. “It was amazing to hear Theresa’s name and Penn Medicine announced as the top fundraisers,” said Danielle Heffner, director of Program Development and Service Line Integration for PAH Heart and Vascular Services. “This was a true team effort to help eradicate heart disease and stroke.”

According to the American Heart Association (AHA), heart disease is the leading cause of death around the world. Every day, more than 2,200 Americans die from heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases — that’s one person every 40 seconds. The Philadelphia Heart Walk is part of a collaborative, nationwide event to raise awareness and funds to support AHA's mission of building healthier lives free of cardiovascular disease and stroke. “Congratulations, and more importantly, thank you, to everyone who helped make this year’s walk our most successful Heart Walk to date,” Larivee said. “The enthusiasm and leadership during this campaign was truly astounding.”
