This Time Together So Glad We Had

After 3 7 y e a rs of extraordinary commitment and dedication to Pennsylvania Hospital, our Executive Director R. Michael Buckley, MD, is retiring this fall. As our executive director, Dr. Buckley has been responsible for the clinical, research, and education activities of PAH, overseeing over 1,000 physicians and 2,700 employees. “When I think about Dr. Buckley’s legacy, it has always been about one thing: taking care of people,” said Daniel M. Feinberg, MD, chief medical officer, PAH. “Pennsylvania Hospital may never have another person that will touch so many aspects of its history over such a long period of time. We are fortunate to have had him as our leader.”

“Dr. Buckley helped lead over 20 clinical, multi-center trials investigating agents to treat HIV and to prevent and treat infections in these patients.”

A long-running Philadelphia Magazine Top Doc, Dr. Buckley was at the forefront of AIDS treatment, beginning in 1982. At that time PAH had one of the two largest infectious disease practices in Philadelphia caring for patients with HIV. Dr. Buckley helped lead over 20 clinical, multi-center trials investigating agents to treat HIV and to prevent and treat infections in these patients. He is a member of the Mayor’s Advisory Council for HIV/AIDs and is a Lyme disease expert, testifying on behalf of the Infectious Disease Society at Pennsylvania State hearings on Lyme. Dr. Buckley was Chief of Infectious Disease at PAH from 1988 until 1997, when he became Associate Dean for Physician Network Development for UPHS. In this role he was primarily responsible for the integration of PAH into Penn’s Health System. In 1999, he was named Chairman of the Department of Medicine and was responsible for the recruitment and retention of physicians and for the department’s training and educational efforts. The Patient E x p e ri e n c e The following letter is from patient of William C. Welch, MD, FACS, FICS, chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at PAH, who wrote to express his gratitude and share his personal patient experience. Dear Dr. Welch, A few months ago I had the pleasure of meeting you, at that time you were my last hope for a future without pain. Prior to my appointment I began phone conversations with your nurse Diane (Nurse Practitioner, Diana Gardiner). She was extremely knowledgeable and compassionate each time I spoke with her. My meeting with you left me hopeful that this would be my final stop! Both you and I were in agreement that surgery was my best option. You were confident that spinal stenosis was my problem (I was never told this by any of the past 11 doctors I had seen over a four year period). During my appointment you discussed how surgery would be performed, you offered me different options of anesthesia, and basically you put all of my fears of “back surgery” to rest.

About a month later I was on the operating table, and surgery went smoothly! After post-op recovery I was sent to my room and about an hour later I was greeted by your PA, checking in to see how I was feeling and if I needed anything. The nurses that were with me that night were wonderful! They constantly checked on me. Early the next morning a great breakfast arrived, and then the nurse helped me get washed and dressed to go home. Mid-morning you stopped in to discharge me and to go over post-op instructions. My recovery was simple with only mild discomfort at the incision site. At two weeks I felt pretty much like my old self — pain free. At four weeks I went back to see you and my post-surgery restrictions were lifted! I was able to resume all activities as long as they were comfortable to me. Dr. Welch you are my ANGEL, HERO, FIRST CLASS SURGEON, A KIND AND COMPASSIONATE MAN. You gave me my LIFE BACK. Something I NEVER thought I would have. Your team of doctors and nurses are some of the finest people I had the pleasure of meeting. Penn Medicine “ROCKS!” I would not have gone anywhere else.

Life Sav i n g Ha n ds M a k e a D i f f e r e n c e Celebrate Emergency Nurses Week 2014 This year, PAH and the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) (http://www.ena.org/) are celebrating Emergency Nurses Week™ October 5-11. Emergency Nurses Day® is Wednesday, October 8. This year’s theme, “Life Saving Hands,” recognizes that emergency nurses play an integral role in emergency departments, providing critical care when it’s most needed. “Emergency Nurses Week is a time to recognize and celebrate emergency nurses for the hard work they do every day and for the passion and dedication they have for their profession. These nurses have a profound impact on the lives of their patients by not only providing

Employee Flu Campaign Starts Soon > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Over the past five years, greater than 98 percent of PAH and UPHS employees have been vaccinated for seasonal influenza. Getting the flu vaccine reduces the risk of illness for our staff and helps keep our patients, colleagues, and families healthy and safe. UPHS has been recognized by the State of Pennsylvania for this key patient safety initiative. The 2014 Penn Medicine Employee Flu Campaign is an opportunity to continue our achievements. It will begin at PAH in late September as usual with the distribution of vaccine to high-risk clinical units and practices. The Occupational Medicine Flu Vaccine Clinics will follow, at a wide variety of PAH/CPUP/CORP/HUP/PPMC locations, with the kick-off on Wednesday, October 8. All times and locations of the all Flu Vaccine Clinics are posted on the Intranet. (http://uphsxnet.uphs.upenn.edu/ occupationalmedicine). Seasonal influenza vaccine is provided free of charge to all Penn Medicine staff, clinical faculty and contractors. Annual vaccination is needed for maximal protection because each year’s influenza vaccine protects against the virus strains most likely to be circulating that year. Egg-free vaccines have been manufactured and FDA-approved; we hope to have these available to egg-allergic employees by mid-October. To ensure minimal waiting times and rapid documentation, bar-coded vaccine consent forms are available to employees and faculty. Details on how to access your bar-coded form are posted on the PAH Intranet page; look for the Flu Campaign 2014-2015 Button. If you choose to be vaccinated outside a UPHS Flu Vaccine Clinic, please send your documentation to Occupational Medicine with a copy of your bar-coded form to make sure you get timely credit.

lifesaving care, but also by taking the time to listen, hold a hand, and provide comfort in times of anxiety and uncertainty,” said Lisa M. Verseput, MSN, RN, CEN, nurse manager of the Emergency Department. A week’s worth of events are planned to honor our ED nurses this year. ED nurses will be treated to complimentary massages on October 6, 9 and 10; an ED Night Out will be held at Cavanaugh’s Headhouse in Old City on October 7; catered lunch and dinner will be provided to ED nurses on October 8, Emergency Nurses’ Day; and nurses will enjoy some sweet treats in the ED on Dessert Day, October 10.

Again this year, we offer to employees who receive their flu vaccination, a chance to be entered into a raffle. Employees who submit their completed flu bar-coded consent form by October 27, will be entered into the raffle and eligible to win one of several prizes. Prizes include a Touch-Screen Samsung Tablet, iPod Shuffle, and Fitbit! The UPHS Influenza Vaccine Policy is unchanged from last year. Contact your HR generalist for any questions about the policy or see the policy at the Flu Campaign Page.

“The Emergency Department nurses at Pennsylvania Hospital exemplify the principles of our professional practice model, Relationship Based Care. I am truly humbled to work with such an exceptional staff,” said Verseput.

“ These nurses have a profound impact on the lives of their patients by not only providing lifesaving care, but also by taking the time to listen, hold a hand, and provide comfort in times of anxiety and uncertainty,”

Since 1989, the Emergency Nurses Association had recognized the second Wednesday in October as Emergency Nurses Day, a day honoring emergency nurses for their commitment to patient care. Starting in 2001, ENA expanded the celebration to devote an entire week to honoring emergency nurses, because one day is simply not enough to recognize all contributions made by emergency nurses. There are approximately 180,000 emergency nurses in the U.S. who have expertise in caring for all emergency patients across the spectrum of a lifespan — from ushering life in at birth to allowing for a dignified death.
